So how do trials work exactly?

You can accuse or be accused.

When accused, you either plead or demur.

If you demur, you and your plaintiff join at issue of law.

If you plead, you say you're either guilty or not guilty.

If you plead not guilty, you and your plaintiff join at issue of fact.

Unless you're summoned and sworn as witness to fact alleged, you can't.

Now I have declared, as the defence counsel for the prisoners-of-war, that the crown's indictment is insufficient.

It's called a demurrer.

As the crown counsel, you now have to file a joinder in demurrer.

If you overrule the demurrer, then the defendants will have to enter a plea.
