So I just reading through this thread and thought this looked pretty interesting. But seriously? Superpowers? No; but maybe something similar, but combining many of the ideas you all introduced, to some level. Perhaps just genetically enhanced humans; you know, extremely fast reaction times, thought processes (increased intelligence and decision-making skills, extremely advanced learning ability and perfect memory recall, etc.), extreme strength and swiftness (i.e. speed and agility), etc. Then maybe throw on top of that advanced modern tech; i.e. nano-suits or some form of cybernetic augmentation suit or whatnot - just however it works, but further enhances the wearer's abilities, but would otherwise kill a normal person (the suit's main function would be its armor protection and weapons, and most of all its sensors and communcations to increase the awareness of the soldier of their surroundings and allies - free-flow tactical network). Steampunk seems quite... unrealistic given we're talking about some form of fatal or mutating virus.

Also, the virus? Is it fatal, mutating, or both? Does it depend on the victim's biology, or does it affect everyone similarly?

Honestly, I think an idea with merit is a virus that mutates people into... things. Not necessarily like the Flood from Halo, but perhaps more akin to the creatures from a series like prototype. However it works, it creates things that cannot be fought effectively by normal soldiers and weapons. So, in response, something like a super-soldier program is initiated - genetically enhanced humans equipped with augmentative cybernetic suits working in small teams commanded by, say, government shadow agents to keep everything hush-hush.

Hush-hush; as a gov't, you wouldn't want your citizens all panicking and rioting, causing further chaos when confronted with a threat their own gov't can't protect them from effectively. So the gov't maybe keeps a close leash on any form of press or media news and only leaks successful operations to push back the 'things' (whatever they are). Yes they'd be lying through their teeth to their populace and only the really higher-ups would know the truth, that they're steadily losing ground, but it's better than allowing the citizens to riot, rebel, and destroy the only thing that can protect them to some degree - the gov't. Then, those same shadow agents also are responsible for putting down any rebellions or unauthorized information leaks, and corrupt or opposing politicians. I don't know what kind of gov't or world exactly, maybe the whole 'we live united or die divided' thing is how the gov't looks at it; pretty effective in such a dark world, yet?

Anyway, that's what I though of when some of you spoke of wanting a 'darker' world, but one that was realistic without superheroes and all.

I'd like this RP.

Assuming you're talking 'bout my idea, Stattr, thanks! I thought it might work best, as then all the players would technically be on the same side, or working for the same side, and therefore it might narrow down chances of god-modding or flame-wars. Plus, then we might actually have some interesting and realistic scenes and play with kill-teams of players tracking and hunting down the greater monsters, using stealth and skill and whatnot while regular soldiers hold the line against the lesser and average monster-thingies, since they'd get slaughtered even worse otherwise, but have the numbers to take them on more easily than a small kill-team who'd be wasted on lesser, more numerous targets.

Also, would the virus be transferred by fluid contact? And would there be a vaccine? And would the vaccine only work within, say, 24 hours of initial exposure, before the infected person transform or mutates past any point of return? Just a few questions to think about... Not to mention whatever the hell, should this idea work, the infected things look like once fully mutated, and if there appearances and sizes vary, and what abilities they may gain or lose, not including losing their humanity.

Edit: fluid contact: blood, saliva, etc. Monsters be biting you!

On a further note, in a darker world the last remnants of humanity have likely banded together in one area under one gov't as they're hemmed in on all sides by forces too numerous to defeat effectively, and too powerful to destroy with normal troops - hence the whole super-soldier idea. I don't know where this gov't would be located, but I'd say probably in the UK, an island not easily invaded by foes that likely can't cross water due to buoyancy problems, or in North America. I'd hope something along the lines of a massive city-state, a few tens of millions of people living in hundreds of stories tall skyscrapers linked together by hundreds of sky-ways and sky-roads within a giant fortress of many concentric curtain walls of concrete and steel, bristling with defenses - some form of mega-complex, the whole thing encased in a transparent sphere to create an artificial environment. A possible explanation of the past, was after the accidental or whatnot release of the virus and the failure to contain those affected, humanity and civilization broke down, many nations resorting to nuclear weapons to destroy affected areas and keep the infected hordes at bay. So, the world suffers beneath a nuclear winter, most nations are destroyed and most regions uninhabitable and so the few survivors, a few tens of millions, band together and create whatever the city-state is called, it being one of, if not the last bastion of humanity.

That good for a dark RP?

Haha, well, thanks anyways. It'd be nice if some other people got involved or the others on this thread posted something... Wouldn't mind if we could actually narrow down the ideas and OOC so an IC could be set up soon

3010!? Erm, I actually find that a bit unrealistic. Perhaps something more recent: 2300s at the farthest, and 2030s at the closest. Personally, we can do many of the things now that I mentioned, though not to the same degree. So the closer to the current times the better, I think. I wouldn't go past 2120 though, to be honest.

I would argue that point, but I realized you already passed the boundary into insanity ;)

Still, I submit 2030, being a bit more realistic - 4269 and we'd be all dead or in space in any time past 2120.
