Chrinthania wrote:Holy new applications, Batman!

Hi there, all. I'm Chrinthania. I play the Western Roman Empire and the Democratic Republic of Icarie (NC, SC, VA). First of all, I want to thank you all for your interest in A Modern World. It's really nice to see people who are interested in our little group and who feel they have something to contribute.

Here's what I have to say about the new applications:

Cologne, I like what I see. It is rather bare-bones, but I'd rather have a decent bare-bones application that has tons of potential than a feature-length novel application without any sustenance whatsoever. We can hammer out details between us as the process moves along. That being said, I'm really interested in seeing a bit more information. Probably best to give some details about how the government works and a very rough historical outline (don't worry about getting our history wrong, we'll point out the differences quickly enough).

Again, Cologne, I like what I see and hope to see you as a thriving member of our community!

GBR.....

In the Opening Post of this thread, there is a link to an example application that we feel is representative of the likes of which we'd want to see. The idea of having something "Like the US Government, but different" doesn't really work unless we have more information to digest and understand.

I have no idea what that all means. It's too vague, too limited in scope, and not really descriptive enough. We want to be introduced to your nation, not given a Cliff's Notes version of what it is. I suggest you take a look at other applications in this thread which have been approved. Also, do some research on the CIA World Factbook and read how the CIA describes nations.

Erm, now, as for the application itself. Well, you're assuming there's a Spain and a Portugal in the RL life sense. That didn't happen IRL. The Western Roman Empire never fell and lives on today containing Italy, Portugal, and most of Spain, plus several smaller territories nearby and around the world. Also, I don't want to sound stand-off-ish or rude, but, I really don't care about hot babes and beautiful beaches. There's tons of places in AMW that have that already. When I read a history, I want to know important historical events. When did the Romans (read Spanish, Portuguese) arrive? How did they colonize and conquer the land? When was the republic formed? When did Santos come to power? How did that happen? What was going on in the nation around that time? Why was there an uprising? Bananas only? Isn't there more to your economy than that?

GBR... really, I can't lend support to your application because it really isn't what we're looking for. Feel free to apply again, but, at this time, I have to vote no.

Image

I'll try to fix it and make a better one, but I can't do it at the moment. Tomorrow, I leave for a vacation, and I won't be back till June 29th, and I will have zero internet access. However, while I'm there, I will be thinking about this, creating a better history for this nation, and when I get back, I'll submit an improved application.

I can't help but feel the need to give a comment on this, but a select few things Chrinthania wrote appeared as if he had misread some of it.
From what I can read;
Reason for uprising: Emergence of a dictatorship led by Santos and the uprising that followed to counter the dictatorship led by a man named Bruno Ribeiro.
Bananas Only?: Not sure.. He only wrote, and I quote, "The most common crop grown was, you guessed it, bananas".

Either way, for what it counts I'll say that it's quite nice to read (Not counting the punch-to-the-face name Banana Republic.. Which does sound a bit silly, no offense. The population would in the media then be referred to as Bananas.. Oh my.
It's, however, for what my opinion counts, a bit lacking on details, but if I had a right to say anything I'd give it a "Needs some work, then yes.".

Being the newest addition, however, I don't think I have the right to vote and thus this merely serves as.. Something~

One thing about Kutch:

Since the primary language spoken in the FIS is modern Pashto (and Kutch, by extension, since there is a large Pashtun minority), I do think there would be an official name in it.

Nation: Kingdom of Huang

History

Ancient history

Since time immemorial groups of humans have been living alongside the Yellow River. The land being exceptionally fertile, it provided the optimal conditions that nurtured the nucleus of what became the Huang civilization. As the groups of people living in the region became more proficient at agriculture, and produced abundant surpluses, the productive energies of the people moved from being focused purely on subsistence. Whereas before all of the population was involved in farming, only taking up arms to defend themselves against external forces when the situation demanded it, there was now fragmentation in the labour force. With the development of a specialised class of warriors, violence became more organised, more frequent, and more devastating than ever before. There was also greater incentive to be violent – the development of a class of artisans and merchants had been concurrent with the warrior class and with it the creation of unprecedented material wealth – wealth that was worth fighting for. The new epidemic of violence served as a powerful catalyst in the formation of much more cohesive communities as groups of people pledged allegiance to military strongmen in order to gain protection. For hundreds of years a consistent attritional, struggle prevailed amongst rival military factions. However eventually one particular military faction gained the upper hand, crushing opposing military factions and becoming the foremost power in the region. In order to consolidate the territorial gains new apparatuses of power were created. Firstly the development of a new magistrate class, reporting directly to the nascent 'government' and responsible for imposing its will away from the centre of power. Secondly the development of a religious class, pivotal in promulgating an ideology that bound disparate peoples together in obeisance to the new regime by stressing the divine right of the conqueror to rule. Thus, Cheng Xu, the military strongman who presided over the victory of his clique over the last remaining regional rival, is remembered as the progenitor of the Huang nation, and the first emperor.

Medieval History

The creation of the Xu dynasty marked the beginning of a new epoch. It lasted hundreds of years. There was the development of greater material prosperity during this time, alongside greater inequality. The period also saw technological innovation – horse shoes, windmills, watermills. By the middle of the 14th century this golden age came to an end. Expensive wars with neighbouring powers and government ineptitude, compounded by the economic and demographic disaster engendered by The Black Death (1348) caused a civil war (1350-7) which the government lost. This marked the end of the absolute rule of the Xu dynasty. The rebels were of a staunchly conservative nature, keen to uphold the traditional order of society but weary of autocrats who constantly expropriated their wealth and wasted it, without their consent. Therefore the Emperor was not deposed – he was a vital pillar of traditional society – but instead limited in his power. He could no longer raise taxes without the consent of an assembly of all the most powerful landowners. This marked the beginnings of the parliamentary system, and also the end of the medieval period, as future rulers were bound by parliament to not simply consider their selfish, dynastic, interests – but also consider the welfare of the territorial entity which they ruled. The beginnings of the concept of a 'nation' was thus another consequence of the civil war.

Early Modern/Modern

This period saw the shift from a dynasty presiding over a mass of disparate people, to a government presiding over a nation. By the end of the modern period the territorial entity was no longer simply the demesne of the 'Xu Dynasty'. It was now the Huang Empire, its inhabitants known as 'Huangren' (Huang person) , the name deriving from the name of the Yellow River that had nurtured the civilization in its earliest stages. Factors that spurred this development on include the aforementioned parliamentary system, but also wars that increasingly demanded the commitment of the entire population. In order to mobilise the population, it had to be co-opted. It had to feel part of a great national undertaking – in the same way that previously the greatest landowners demanded greater involvement in government after the civil war. The logical result of this was the enlargement of the franchise. Political reform came slowly, over the course of hundreds of years, until the present day where every adult has the vote, regardless of race, sex, class.

It was during the modern period (18th/19th centuries) that Huang became enmeshed in a global network of trade. Huang had (has) abundant natural resources and a highly productive and specialised workforce. This made (and continues to make it to this day) very competitive in the global economy. Therefore unlike other countries Huang did not have much incentive to conquer swathes of territory as it could get everything it needed either from its abundant resource base or from trade. The only territorial gains that were made in this period were small entrepots set up at trade hubs across the world which the government of Huang eventually nationalised. Huang's involvement in an international network of exchange (of ideas, technology, materials) caused rapid development and modernization during the 19th century and created an industrialised nation.

The 20th century saw the development of a mass consumer society as ordinary people had more disposal income than ever before. Politics became less elitist, with the development of mass political movements and the increasing power of trade unions.

The late 20th century and early 21st century saw Huang move into a post-industrial society, as an economy dominated by manufacturing transformed into one constituted by a myriad of service industries.

Politics

Huang has a royal family which serve purely as figure heads and have no involvement whatsoever in governance beyond a purely ceremonial role.

Huang has a parliamentary system which consists of a single assembly of elected representatives. The political party that wins the most seats in the election goes on to form the government, with the leader of the winning party becoming Protector, and other prominent members of the party going onto occupy ministerial posts of various government departments – Justice, Education, National Defense etc...

Legislation can be passed if the majority votes for it (this means that an elected government faces no real obstacles in passing legislation as long as all of their Elected representatives back it).

The two major parties are the Conservatives and the Progressives.

Huang is a fully fledged democratic country, with free media (as free as one can be when owned by capitalists), citizens with full political rights (free speech, free assembly, anonymous voting) and elections every 5 years.

Economy

Manufacturing is of high quality, technologically cutting edge products but the sector constitutes a tiny proportion of GDP. Most GDP comes from the service sector, with Huang exporting world renowned engineering, pharmaceutical and telecommunications services.

Military

Historically Huang has always relied on well equipped mass conscripted armies and in peace time has almost no standing army to speak of.
Because of its reliance on trade with other countries Huang has developed a strong naval tradition and maintains a world class navy to this day.
The air force exists purely in a defensive function – interceptors and fighters to defend the fleet when out on operations, and the homeland if it comes under attack.

Culture

Huangren always see themselves first and foremost as part of a social group larger than the individual. Therefore collectivism has a strong appeal to the average Huangren and rampant individualism is frowned upon. While entrepreneurial capitalism is encouraged and high earners are not punished by high tax rates, there is an underlying assumption (often accepted by rich people) that they will make a contribution back to society through philanthropic activity. Favourite activities of Huangren include table tennis, tea drinking and eating fine food. Alcohol consumption is considered to be filthy and the mark of an uncultured person.

Geography

Shandong province, China

Population: 100 million, mostly homogeneous.

An interesting claim, and an excellent application (one that I have surprisingly no qualms about)! Although you'll have a lot of competition with the WRE, Walmington and Niebulunc in terms of trade, Huangren will certainly be the dominant trade power in East and Southeast Asia (Sorry Colognia, you can only export so much Uranium!).

So I finally sat down and wrote out a proper application… Jewishness meets filibusterism!

In the beginning was the Book and it was a book that proceeded all books: the Revelations preceding all revelations. Zion is the nation of the Book, because the mystery and commandment of it is not only a universal library but something even vaster. It is more enigmatic because it replaces the universe. The nation returned and returned--they came back to it again and again. Every time it seemed that its secrets were exhausted they discovered another, for today's world, and it filled them with optimism. Optimism that fuelled more determination to uncover more secrets. Such is the Talmud.

Revelation and the Book are totally contemporaneous terms. Revelations begins with the Book. The Book is Revelation. To enter the Book in the way one enters History that is in the process of being written is to hear Speech as it is being revealed--right here and now. To hear Speech is to be reminded that, as citizens, they may consider themselves Walmingtonians, Icarians, Hibernordians, or from even farther afield, yet as believers of the Book "we are all, in all places, strangers and pilgrims." For, simply put, they shall celebrate in Jerusalem--next year. While in the world of the Gentiles there is no other alternative. While in this world a cup will be left for Elijah, a door will remain cracked open and the Seder plate will always be missing a crucial meat.

Until then, however, they shall be Zion of Isaiah 59: 19 that spoke of a glory that rose from "the sunne." It would be more beautiful than Tirzah, Holier than the Temple Mount, grander than the Mountain Sinai and more comely than Jerusalem. In everything, through adhering to Revelation, they hope to conquer time. If modern civilization is a conqueror9 of space, then they are the conquerors of time. The other half of the world so unjustly sidelined in the quest for technical superiority, often at the expense of spiritual equilibrium.

William Stoughten IV declared that he would build this early paradise and with the Talmud he would construct a monument with the stones they threw at the Book. He was, in part, right. A Janus-like prophet, facing secular and sacred history alike, he--along with a select band of ‘Immortals’--sailed from Icaria in the late 18th and 19th centuries. Their target was a selection of territories that were ruled by ethnic Slavs. Their victories were signs from the almighty YHWH that he, along with his fellow filibusters, were answering a call greater than their own. The defeats were only punishments of love--a father dismayed at his wayward children. The punishments confirmed the promise of a new Zion.

The nation of 19,000,000 is generally urban, generally suspicious but united in their hope for progress. Spiritually, materially and politically they will evolve gradually and steadily. The halakha, coaxed from the cherished covers the Talmud, gives them the avenue. It is up to them to use this Revelation to achieve God's plan. Once perfected Armageddon will come and the unrighteous will realize how far they had fallen behind the zenith of human perfectability. But, sadly, not a moment sooner. God's chosen people are, by their very definition, a small class of people. View it as chiliasm, but with a bit of Whig historiography thrown in.

There was, is and will be nothing that can stop them. Every apocalyptic tremor is another reminder of their own importance, often in contrast to their ‘objective’ value on the world’s geopolitical stage.

The country is a lament. On one hand identifying the growing discrepancy between the fact of modern life and the ideal. It is not a historical position, but a mode of explanation. Their example is a strategy for prodding the world community forward, in the belief that the world’s Jews would be made to correspond. By bridging the false gap produced by Augustine, and his two cities, the world would be made whole. “Everyman comes at the common results with most conviction in his own way. But he only uses a different vocabulary from your’s; it comes to the thing” and so the nation was a halfway point. Its aim was to encourage the self-realization inherent in everyone’s mind.

Location: Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras
Population: 19,000,000
GDP per Capita: 20,000
GDP: 380 000 000 000
Capital: Zion (San Juan de Nicaragua)
Head of State: Rabbi Abraham Heschel
Government: Republic
Languages: Hebrew, Yiddish, Slav
Population origin: 34% Jewish, 16% American non-Jewish, 42% Slav, 8% European non-Jewish

There are two main historical events that anchor the historical Zion. The first is the conquest, started by William Stoughten IV and continued onwards by his children between the years of 1880-1920. Oftentimes, quite literally, his children. He was fond of Slavic women. These men, dubbed filibusters by the Icarian press, were in large part Jewish but were--perhaps more accurately--simply acting as ‘freebooters,’ or pirates. There was land, there were weak governments and in a short amount of time through a rather convenient set of circumstances these small states fell one by one until they were eventually swallowed up. As the state developed a stronger sense of self-identity, and it became apparent that not too many people were particularly keen on dying from yellow fever, the place was advertised--quite literally--as a Jewish haven.

The second main event was the toppling of the teetering, nearly theocratic government in the 60s by hardline communists. The kibbutzim system, which had found fertile participants and land apiece in Central America, had grown into a political movement. With its self-assurance and self-righteousness the obstacles, as the then political-religious system of balancing interests was dubbed, became evermore tiresome. The wings that favored kinetic action finally triumphed and the Glorious May Revolution was at hand--briefly. A multinational coalition, spearheaded by Icarie, quickly toppled the government and replaced it with a less popular, if more democratic, system. More secular, however, than its prior non-communist forefather.

By my calculations Colognea would still be the #2 in Gold aswell.. And other mining things. But yeah, dominant in trade considering Colognea is maybe slightly closed off from the rest of the world.

Note to application: Lovely read, yes from me. (If I can vote, that is.)

Placeholderr,

Interesting NS Nation name. The application is good. I'll reserve a more lengthy reply for a later time after I've had ample sleep. However, it's got a general thumbs-up from me.

Max,

Well, the only thing I can say is yes.

Cologne,

Any active member of AMW is allowed to voice their opinions on applications. You don't have to fret, we're not going to stop you from lending/denying your approval to applications.

There, that's that sorted for the moment.

All looks promising. Except for Max, obviously :P

Close to 100 million people and a formidable economy is a lot for a new player in the group, but I suppose realistically we have to accept that almost any claim in China is going to be large if we ever want to rebuild that part of the community... East Asia is kinda the birthplace of AMW, after all, and it'd be nice to get things moving again over there.

I'm okay with giving Huang a chance, at least.

Nation Name: The Great Western Empire of St Saratoga

Population: 15,676,718 (2012
state populations combined)

Languages: Ojibwa, French, English

Ideal location: MidWest United States, preferably Minnesota, Iowa, North-South Dakota, Nebraska, Colarado, and Wyoming
Government: (not like my NS nation) Democracy (US system of Government)

History: When St Saratoga was colonised by refugees from previous wars in the Mediterranean Sea area. They came over on boats and through The Great Lakes and arrived on the arrow tip of Minnesota. The colonist colonised the Midwest region over the span of 150 years. Created an government which was choice by the people.

Culture: Saratoga's culture is a mix of the counties in Europe as well as the native amerique inhabitants. (I'm not very good at filling out culture)

Economy: The Sararogan economy is very strong. The Midwest had tons of natural resources from granite to clay to coal to lumber. The MidWest has it all. Saratoga also has a very large population of big and small game animals. Most of Saratoga is plains and farmfield (which has very ferile soil) with the industry located in the Minnesota-Iowa area. But one of the downfalls is Saratoga lack infrastructure because of the massive plains which is also an defensive advance.

Military: The Saratoga military is mainly based on speed and mobility than it is over firepower. The Militay mainly focas on Air and Army over Navy. The pride of the Saratogan military is in it's Air Force because of the massive plains the Air Force would be much more of an effective fighting force than a tank for infantry squad would have.
Appearances:
  • World Baseball Classic 41, 47
  • World Cup of Hockey 34, 38, 39, 40, 47
  • World Lacrosse Championship 21, 28, 31, 33, 34
  • Independent Cup: 17
Best Results:
  • World Baseball Classic: Group Stage

From reading this a couple times, I'm afraid I can't say that, as it stands, I'm not confident in this application. Even if I'm generous and I disregard the slightly difficult-to-read English, it's a bit lacking in explanation.

Here's some tips;
-A history of 150+ years shouldn't be two lines long. Perhaps you can write some things about the people who made it all possible. Why did the refugees leave? (i.e., What was their reason for leaving the warzones? Political oppression? Religious intolerance? - Were they of a specific religion that was not accepted in the areas they emigrated from?) I just googled the population of your ideal location, and 17.7 million people, how did they interact with those native Amerique inhabitans? Did those European immigrants steal their land, or did they come to a mutual, peaceful agreement as to share the lands with them?
-Filling out Culture shouldn't be too hard. Now, I can understand that you don't know what countries govern Mediterranean Europe, that you could be unconfident with making assumptions as having people from warring nations emigrate from those places, but those respective countries (In particular, their RP'ing masters) are better at helping you out than I would be. I'm Colognea, the nation that emcompasses Australia, minus Tasmania, a nation that has a mix of Slavs and Germanic people. If you want, and if you're willing to write another application, I'll absolutely agree if you wish to write about how some of the Germanic/European people of Colognea went on to find their fortunes in the Midwest of America, but it's your story, you should write it out to your hearts content and adapt if there are people who do not wish to include some refugee-story in their history, that sparked the creation of yours.
-Economy; Like my nation, you'd be governing a people who aren't packed up like the European people. How do the long distances between population centres affect your economy? Again, if you decide to write out another application, throw some more effort into the history; Did your nation seek open relations with other nations, as to increase the technology over the years, or did your nation end up having to do a lot of the technological advancements (Think about television, radio, sattelite service, postal service, yadayada) themselves?
-Military: I'm not a military-minded person, so I can give no advice on this, but if you decide to take some of my points into your next application I wish you the best of luck!

So, unfortunately, a 'No' from me for now.

(PS: Try to read over what you wrote after you wrote it, once or twice, and try to remove the typos. A few typos are never bad, but as soon as it becomes more than a few, it kills some of the immersion in the roleplay.)

Hope this helps!

St Saratoga,

As the application stands, I have to voice my own opposition to it. However, there's a kernel in there that could be an interesting claim, so rather than attempt to just flat out say 'no', I'd like to offer you the option of reading the Opening Post of this thread, and, in particular, the link to an example application which is in line with what we're wanting from an application and give it another go.

Slavs in South America? Doesn't that sound weird? :p

Since Hibernordics (a Celto-Nordic people) are probably not involved in it, they'd probably just put the Jewish filibusterists on ignore, apart from the occasional massing of troops on the short border with Eidland (Panama) and the intermittent blockades of the Pacific and Brasilian (Caribbean) coasts in order to 'persuade' the little republic on its border to agree on it in certain matters (including abandoning its dream of a trans-isthmic canal, if it has a dream of it). There'd be trade, but I presume Jews would be treated with much suspicion in highly conservative and Catholic Hibernordia... but I don't think somebody has already made the AMW version of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion to brainwash and fool the world into anti-Semitism.

And I spot the word communism there. Comrade! Though I envision a communist Hibernordia between the 1930s-1970s. If your communism comes within that time frame, we'll be your great supporter. if not, we'll be your great destabilizer. ;)

Your test scores indicate that you are an open-minded progressive; this is the political profile one might associate with a journalist. It appears that you are skeptical towards religion, and have a generally optimistic attitude towards humanity in general.
Your attitudes towards economics appear communist, and combined with your social attitudes this creates the picture of someone who would generally be described as a humanist.
To round out the picture you appear to be, political preference aside, a sensible realistic egalitarian with several strong convictions.

I love it, Ayrshire. One thing though, Ireland is actually claimed, it is part of Hibernordia. But the other places are available, as is North England. Un Bourbon, who plays the Kingdom of France in Southern England and Wales (yes, you read that right! France in England!) will be able to hash it out better with you, but there is much of England left to make up for you not having Ireland.

Additionally, there might be some things in your history you'll need to hash out with people, but that's specific, nitty-gritty stuff you can talk about later.

Also, I'd add that AMW isn't a "new initiative." We've been trucking along for 10 years! But we've been getting a bit more aggressive about recruitment, which is perhaps why you thought we were new. :D

AMW doesn't have a hard and fast rule about applications. Basically, if a handful of people say yes, then you're good. Consider me your first YES.

The application system here is a bit more open-ended than filling out a form. A good application just needs to cover a nation's basic history, society, economy and world standing (though we'll fit you in amongst the pecking order anyways when you join). I can point out some successful applications for you to draw inspiration from, however.

Alright, thanks. I'm thinking of making either a nation either on the Ivory Coast or where Afghanistan is.

In terms of the other Applicants, Ayshire while I like where you are going with that app, might I suggest you flesh it out a bit more, mainly in terms of Governemnt and Economy, while you have the facts straight perhaps more info on how the state works and it's economy runs would be helpful

I love the Idea of the Central American state Max, all good

That was generally my plan for the moment, though the lore for my nation fits better as a central Asian nation.

Regarding technology, are we only allowed to use things that really exist right now? So, for starters, iphones or F-16s and the like? And if so, do nations that control the lands where those things are from get to decide who uses them/get exclusive rights to them?
