A Fox and Pony Show OOC Thread

Postby Frenequesta » Sat Mar 24, 2012 10:10 pm

NOTE: "CoPS and RoUS preferred" only means that this RP concerns these groups most. However anyone is really welcome to play a part in the hearings.

IC thread here.

This is the OOC thread to my "legislative hearing" RP "A Fox and Pony Show", where the nation of Frenequesta debates whether or not to join the Coalition of Ponyist States.

In the IC thread I have four main witnesses, along with several minor ones that will give their responses to Foreign Affairs Committee members, but others are welcome to have their own witnesses come and either argue for or against joining the alliance, which I will question with the Foreign Affairs Committee. If you want a character of yours to be a witness in these proceedings, apply here:
Code: Select all
Name of Witness:
Occupation/Credentials:
Nation Affiliated:
For or Against Joining?:
Briefly sum up your arguments so the Committee knows what to expect:

If accepted, you'll be scheduled in the next available space on the "Schedule" list in the original list on the first post in the IC thread. When you are ready for the Committee to give your statement (the time on the schedule will not, of course, correspond to RL time), I will inform you by telegram.
If you'd like to RP a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, you may apply here:
Code: Select all
Name*:
State of Frenequesta represented**:
Political Party***:
Leaning Position (for, against, other):
Explain:

*Keep the name "typically Frenequestan"-- that is, it should either be of American, German, or Chinese (Mandarin) origin, or a combination of these
**Available states are Southern Frenequesta, Coppland, New Herbia, The Zappora Spas, Walmark, East Jorgen, Oskhammer, Trumpor, Kittgenstein, West Jorgen, Plestoria, or La Vitabreve.
***You may either be Socialist Republican, Prosperity, Novelty, Frenequesta Pride, or independent.  If your member intends to be in the Frenequesta Pride Party, they have to be against joining the Coalition, mostly for protectionist reasons.  The Socialist Republican party also has concerns about ties with Hippostania in light of their "police state" descent.

There may be as many witnesses as are welcome, but only 12 slots for Committee members (I control the 13th, who is also the Chair)

Examples:
Name of Witness: Cedar Dance
Occupation/Credentials: Judge, Second Original District, State of Coppland
Nation Affiliated: Frenequesta/GPH
For or Against Joining?: Neutral
Briefly sum up your arguments so the Committee knows what to expect: Contrary to some legality concerns, there is nothing in Freneq law that would prohibit the nation from joining the Coalition.

Name*: Casey Heilmann
State of Frenequesta represented**: East Jorgen
Political Party***: Prosperity
Leaning Position (for, against, other): Other
Explain: The free trade between Frenequesta and the members of the Coalition are a good idea, the defense pact not so much.

Note: You need not apply to be a witness or a Committee member to participate in this RP, however your role if you do not is most likely that of a third-party observer, such as a foreign government and their representatives in Frenequesta or a reporter. Additionally, you can post in the IC thread as the witness in the IC thread at this time so long as the post does not divulge too much information on the speech the witness is to make before the Committee.

First Day of Hearings
8:00 AM: Introduction of Vishton Smalls, Secretary of Foreign Affairs and the Economy

Name of Witness: Dao V'kar It'zil, of the House of Dao
Occupation/Credentials: Senior Ambassador, Amerikan Inter-Species Cooperation Bureau, Sadevko City Department; (Potential) Ambassador to Frequenestra, on behalf of the Holy Technocracy; Honorary Doktor, Ilusioneering; Veiled One, House of Dao
Nation Affiliated: New Amerik; Frequenestra
For or Against Joining?: Against
Briefly sum up your arguments so the Committee knows what to expect: The concept of Ponyism is itself intrinsically speciest and religiously discriminatory, focusing on a solitary species as well as a solitary religion as the agenda and basis for an entire state. We are prepared to argue on behalf of equal rights for all species, not special emphasis towards one.

OOC: If I've mucked this all about whatnot, just let me know and I'll get a fixie in where needed.

He's in. Expect a grilling from some members regarding your assumption of the Coalition's intentions.

OOC: You aren't the only one who did legislative hearings about ponies.

Name of Witness:
Occupation/Credentials:
Nation Affiliated:
For or Against Joining?:
    AGAINST
Briefly sum up your arguments so the Committee knows what to expect:
Frenequesta risks alienating itself from mainstream nations, hindering trade, as well as becoming morally responsible for the human rights' violations of its new allies.

Name of Witness:
Occupation/Credentials:
  • Ambassador to Crystal Spires
  • Observer at the International Union of Equality and Freedom
  • Non-human Affairs Spokesperson.
Nation Affiliated:
For or Against Joining?:
    AGAINST
Briefly sum up your arguments so the Committee knows what to expect:
Frenequesta would become the useful idiot of a group of nations that cares nothing for its well-being. Its soldiers would die pointlessly in aggressive wars against the opponents of ponyism, when it could just as well stay out.

Name of Witness: Rubber Stamp
Occupation/Credentials: Minister of Foreign Affairs of the G.P.H.
Nation Affiliated: The Greater Pony Herd
For or Against Joining?: For
Briefly sum up your arguments so the Committee knows what to expect: Frenequesta shall benefit economically and diplomatically from joining the Coalition. Also, the Coalition's mutual defence pact is more of a "gentlepony's agreement" and is not binding.

Commie ponies with guns and such. One of the OG MLP nations, funnily enough I don't care for EaW pretty much at all.

This nation represents the voices in my head.

OOC: I wasn't aware of your nation's talks, admittedly...

Both are in. The first one may especially appeal to those of the Socialist Republican Party who are wary of allowing free trade with Hippostania.

Precisely. Your first witness will be right after New Amerik's representative, whenever the Committee is finished with him.

Postby Hobbiest Republic » Mon Mar 26, 2012 8:29 pm

Name of Witness: Mint Julep
Occupation/Credentials: Bar owner/Tender
Nation Affiliated: Hobbiest Republic
For or Against Joining?: For
Briefly sum up your arguments so the Committee knows what to expect: When the Shadow Cult threatened to overrun our only Space port, the Coalition was there for us. It was by their presence that my country still exists as a progressive power. And that I'm still able to operate my establishment free of regulation.

Name of Witness: Anthony Bickers
Occupation/Credentials: HRAF Soldier from Catherine's Battalion
Nation Affiliated: Hobbiest Republic
For or Against Joining?: Against, Cautionary
Briefly sum up your arguments so the Committee knows what to expect: The Coalition joined in the Civil War for their own personal reasons. While I can get behind a good slaver hunt, one would think that securing the country from other more imminent threats would come before cleansing it of slavers.

As long as you can connect the statement about business free of regulation with some specific provision of the Coalition's bylaws, the first one is in, however the second one is a bit confusing-- is it to suggest that the Coalition will join in wars for the most tenuous of reasons? If so please format it to make the point clearer.

Edited: Sum up args for Committee

Name of Witness: Anthony Bickers
Occupation/Credentials: HRAF Soldier from Catherine's Battalion
Nation Affiliated: Hobbiest Republic
For or Against Joining?: Against, Cautionary
Briefly sum up your arguments so the Committee knows what to expect: I appreciate that the Coalition assisted us in fighting off the Shadow Cult. However, I was under the impression that the assistance at least from one of the participating nations was completely coincidental. That their assistance came only because our government sanctioned a hunt for slavers which 'happened' to bring them at odds with the Cultists. I may just be a low ranking grunt in the Army, but I don't trust them. Any Coalition staffed by countries that need to be baited into helping us can't be trusted.'

Additionally(for the first): It is/was believed that under the rule of the Shadow Emperor free enterprise would've been abolished, as well as civil rights (Basically a Psychotic Dictatorship), which is why Mint Julep is pro-Coalition, because the Coalition is against rulers who abuse their people.

Bumped to inform all participants that the RP is still very much alive, as Judge Cedar Dance has just finished her arguments and Ambassador Dao is ready to go.

By the way, everyone is welcome to make a short entry post describing their witness' entry into the Popular Legislative Building, to develop their character before their questioning.

I've also moved Hobbiest's first witness, Mint Julep, to the First Day of Hearings, so I can spread out the distribution of my witnesses.

Good god, that took far too long...responses should be fun though. I don't even know if the CoPS have anything on non-Pony rights, but if they do they're not in the main IC threads far as I can tell.
