I thought you said late Byvzantine, which would be 13th-15th century....first mass use of arquebus's is mid-15th century.
Ofc, these are arquebus's. Low velocity and rate of fire. Plate armor should be able to stop most shots.
Byzantine fell in 1453...My bad.
What about artillery? I'm worried about my phalanxes now. Though I might get lucky; most cannon of that time is really not very good.

I (or if another nation will volunteer) will host an international high school where countries can volunteer a student. The student from your country could gradually reveal things about your nation as the ponies from around thw Pony Lands learn about the importance of harmony and friendship.

And, of course, the sailors and marines either being unable to return to their homeland and die off or do return but are deemed mad by their tales and thus shunned by the society they return to. Otherwise, there'd be no way for me to be able to participate in this.

After a reign of two thousand years, Discord's empire was beginning to fracture. Not so much because of a divided house but rather of rebellion. The ponies were just another race subject to Discord's Hobbesian rule, but the alicorns were seen as mystical, but very hostile, people, in much the same way the Romans saw Druids. The alicorns rebelling leading a ponyist caused a massive collective scare among the Peers, the full citizens and free people under Discord. The ponies, they were not terribly afraid of; dragonequii were typically the most feared warriors on the battlefield, and the discipline instilled in human and gryphon soldiers certainly helped Discordian warriors.
When the ponies really started rebelling was when a small legion of gryphon were put to death, attempting to instill martial law on a pony-aligned rebelling city. Discord took note of the alicorns and decided to lead a group of eight hundred dragonequii to restore order, and ended up losing a pitched battle where many of his better soldiers were killed or captured.
The rebellion really started to kick off because of two things: The ponies' prodigious reproductive rates both allows them to replace losses far more quickly than dragonequii, and teaching people things from birth will obviously lead them to hold that belief very strongly. Secondly, as soon as ponies started rebelling, because ponies were not looked upon kindly by most, many leapt on the chance to take part in quelling the rebellion with extreme prejudice: in other words, all ponies, rebelling or not, were punished - i.e. killed or tortured. This only swelled the ranks of the ponies.
After a long, protracted campaign to quell the ponyists, plus the emergence of Celestia and Luna as decisive rulers, the empire started to fracture. Discord's capital, a castle called Doris, was seized by ponyists after a ten-year siege and renamed Canterlot, and Discord and his leadership, now a government-in-exile relying on hastily arranged contingency plans and the remains of a battered army, are getting desperate. This is where YellowApple historians go to and, thus, this is where we kick off.
