Altakstan wrote: Adan nodded, unsure, "So, were you fighting for, or on alongside the Vjernaists?". He had heard something about Nalaya taking part in a fight over camps, but he wasn't sure where, exactly, they had stood.

"Against Premislyd. For the people of Severnaya and similar undesirables. A sad story, but not an unfamiliar one," Mina said with a shrug. "In conjunction with New Edom's forces as well. The day we liberated those camps was the proudest in my life. It meant something real."

Qyryqstan wrote:Nursultan felt very out of place in this area with so many military people. He was a musician, and he had no idea how to talk to these people. Because of it, he just stood of to the side after giving the Sergeant his measurements. He felt that once he was wearing Nalayan BDU's, he'd fit in better.

Mina offered Nursultan a small smile and touched his arm in a friendly way. "Don't worry, everyone feels out of place at first. Your classes will make it easier to adjust. Speaking of which..."

The Serzhant cleared her throat. "It is time for everyone to get to class. You will be issued uniforms after that. Alright? Another five minutes, and you will all be late."

Nursultan smiled back at the Sergeant, and prepared to rush off to the first class. He stopped though. "Excuse me, but where is first class?" He was quite embarassed that he had to ask.

Jolee looked at Adan and giggled, "So you are interested in battles? I can tell you some stories."

Adan laughed, "I have a few stories of my own about it, but I wouldn't mind hearing yours on the way to the next class". He turned back to the Serzhant, "That would have been awkward if Nalaya had been on the other side. Pardon my ignorance of foreign affairs, but we'd been pretty secluded. I had actually fought them about a year and a half before you did in the liberation of my country. I can say from personal experience, you did the world a favor by taking another people from beneath their iron hand. Anyway, go ahead and lead the way to the next class. I believe we are all ready".

"Everyone, this way," Mina said. It was a little bit like herding cats, but she at least got them (eventually) to the History of the Western World class.

The class rooms were all set up the same, with amphitheater-style seating for only about thirty students. Nalayans preferred small classes, if only so that the professors knew who skipped and could hound them mercilessly. Their professor was at the white board, flipping a marker in his hand. He did not wear his black dress uniform's jacket, but had both the pants and the jack boots to go with his white shirt. Leytenant Hramatar Vahrej Kasparian was the epitome of military fitness, whipcord lean with iron muscle. His face was disfigured by burns that had completely destroyed his right eye, but beyond that he was in perfect health. He didn't smile, but he wasn't frowning either. A granite statue had more clarity of expression.

"The sooner you all take your seats, the sooner we can begin," he said gruffly, voice deep and resonant. It carried well through the room without him having to raise his voice. The acoustics were excellent. "This class does not run all day."

Adan gave a quick and lazy salute, "Yes sir". He went ahead and sat down at the nearest seat, figuring that where wasn't really important, especially if no one else was seated yet.

Lori followed her teacher dutifully - Dad wouldn't have had her do it any other way - and when she reached the intended destination, she sat right next to Sam. She didn't bother responding to the Linistean, but it was merely out of a desire to listen to the school authority rather than waste time dwelling on cultural semantics. All she knew was that she wanted to enjoy her time with Sam, because they hadn't been together for the past few weeks or so.

Moira had finally arrived at the academy, her flight from Lamoni to Ianua had been forced to take a long detour due to bad weather, and she'd had a forced 24 hour layover in some nation that she didn't even remember. Either way, she'd missed the connector flight to Sevan, and had arrived pretty much at the assigned time, instead of earlier, like she had planned.

Looking around at the student population, Moira was already seeing several boys that she would dearly love to flirt with. Moira had other things to do first however, and followed the signs directing her to where the registration and other essential services were located. Her fist planned stop after that were to be her assigned living quarters, so that she could drop off her luggage. If their hosts were generous enough to allow them to explore the city of Sevan, then maybe she'd be able to find some Nalayan things with which to improve her dorm room. Until such time, Moira would do what she had to do, and maybe meet some nice boys.

After getting his fitting and picking a place to bunk down, Ishmael went straight to the classroom, picking a seat in the front row to sit on after paying his respects to the teacher, a Nalayan officer who apparently had seen painful things in combat. As an attempt at humility, he didn't make his major's oak leaves obvious as he sat down and took notes--in fact, he had hidden the rank insignia in the inner side of his coat for that very reason.

As of the moment, he was intent on listening to the professor's lecture, taking down notes and creating depictions of various events.

Sam sat down and moved his hand under the desks onto Lori's. He liked this. He used his free hand, and began writing down notes of what the professor was saying. He was lucky he was ambidextrous.

Kasparian paced up and down the room as he talked, frequently scaring certain students when he went quiet and then suddenly spoke right behind hem. "Do not get too enamored with your notebooks, ladies and gentlemen. Though for some of you this may be a new and frightening concept, independent thought is required for a solid understanding of history. And why? Because historians are liars. Every text book you have read has an agenda. Facts are uncovered and covered to support theses and stroke the egos of the powerful, and no country is immune to this. Some of you wish to pursue a degree in history. You will do this too, probably without even realizing it."

Kasparian orbited back to the front of the room. "We will spend most of this class examining primary and secondary sources. Even these are written by the victor. The theme of this class will not be 'oh look at how quaint the past used to be'. Instead, it will be 'might makes right'. True or not, it is the view mankind has labored under since it's infancy." To his credit, Kasparian's tittering professorial voice as he criticized the view he disliked was amusing. "You will be graded on your arguments and your insight, both in class and in your papers. If you cheat in my class, you will be fortunate if the administration catches you first. And I will find you out."

He pulled down a map of the world. "Now, we begin in ancient times with the Sumerians, Assyrians, Babylonians, and Egyptians..."

The first class of a section was always mostly lecture, but the classes of his that followed became more like debates. He gave them an overarching view on these civilizations, highlighting important trends and historical events.

Nursultan listened and wrote down notes intensely. He loved the class, and was very interested in it's material. He saw the teacher as being very much like a Qyryq hero, Osul-bataar, who fought off one thousand demons with his hands.

Jolee asked her caregiver ever so nicely and kindly to take notes for her as she listened astutely. She was really excited about this first class and sighed. Her left hip really hurt but she didn't want to make it obvious so she cried quietly.

Alexander scratched notes down furiously. He wasn't much of a note-taker, he had a good memory, but he felt that he should get into the habit of doing so. He set his pen down for a moment and whispered to Nursultan;

"You don't seem like a militay type to me. I'm not either, heh. Where are you from?"

Kasparian finished up his lecture a little bit early, surveying his students. So far, he approved of what he saw. Green and foreign, but there was potential there and a lot of it. General made a good call, he reflected approvingly.

"Alright, we'll end class here. I expect uniforms next time I see the lot of you. Next class, we'll discuss how these empires shaped the ancient world and the beginning of humanity in the West. Your paper will be assigned at the end of the week, and if there are ever any questions or concerns, you can find me in my office." He snapped his gradebook and notes closed. "Dismissed."

Sam let go of Lori's hand and stood up with his books, taking hers for her as well. He enjoyed this class, mostly because of the way the professor taught it. It was different, and Sam liked that. He waited for Lori to get ready before he began walking with her to their next class.

Adah had enjoyed the class, had enjoyed class participation and the sense that the prof was hard but fair, a good combination. She was curious about her classmates, and frankly interested in some of them. Adah had to be discreet about her pleasures. She was no hippy, and didn't want to flaunt her desires in front of everyone, but she loved women. They made her heart melt, made her heart soar, they were so beautiful. She caught Lori's eye at one point, giving her a frank and warm smile of appreciation. Such a beautiful girl. A fantasy overtook her midway through class, of inspecting Lori like a new horse, running hands up and down naked flanks, a slap testing the firmness of a neatly quivering buttock, that bosom in her hands. She had to force herself to pay attention at one point. As Lori was gathering her books she walked up to her and said, "My name is Cornet Adah Weber--and you are Lori Cummings. It's nice to meet you!"

I can't paint or sculpt or play an instrument, but I admire those who can. I sketch a little too..." he paused. "Hey, what's the next class?" he asked aloud.

There was a two hour break between classes now, so the halls were abuzz with activity. Students male and female, most from 16-20 years old, formed little knots of people in the spacious halls. At least a dozen languages were being spoken, not counting foreign tongues. One did sound remarkably close to Nursultan's language, easily understood.

There were Arusai like Mina mingling with students of dark skin and hair with strange scar patterns on their hands and face: the Vatani. Complimenting them were tall and clannish Nava'ai, broken apart by a majority of students of Nalayan descent. And strongly contrasting everyone else were the delicate, lithe students of Snefaldian descent that spoke in soft Quenyan, angular features alight with the energy of youth.

In a courtyard, an animated game of football had broken out, people randomly jumping in on whichever team needed someone. one side wore their green, long-sleeved over-shirts, while the others had removed theirs so their white undershirts were clearly visible. There was a great deal of shouting and good-natured cursing in various languages.

Mina managed to find her foreign students and announced in fine NCO shouting form, "Your uniforms are in the rooms with your last name on them. Get 'em on when you have time! Enjoy the break until Poli Sci!" She was in a beaming good mood after seeing the object of her affection score a beautiful goal.
