Out-of-Character Thread for This Thread.

Meant to clean up OOC Comments and keep the thread moving finely. Thank you.
A complete mess of a nation known in-character as the 'North Lands'; populated by pious priestesses, wandering mercenaries, violent bandits, and various internal power struggles. Be careful of who you deal with.

Basically, a decentralized feudalistic society ranging anywhere between medieval and interwar.

TS successfully "split the atom" in 2008 and don't seem to be able to go anywhere beyond the opening tests of the Manhattan Project. It'd be a miracle for them to meet the power of the Hiroshima bomb, ever. As for all the other technology and defense/law enforcement tech, put us in whenever you think it's proper.

I am... confused. You stated that Turtleshroomian nuclear technology does go past the Manhattan Project and that obtaining the Hiroshima Bomb would be quite the feat.

Refferrence to Nuclear Bomb yield:

Hiroshima - 15kt
Nagasaki - 21kt
Trinity - 17mt
Tsar Bomba - 50mt (Largest IRL)

So yeah, tis confusing to my brain.

Anyway, in law enforcement and defense, I'd assume you're on a similar plane to Comrade Commisar, but somewhat lesser? I'm not sure.

I've researched atomic weaponry and have done many presentations at my school. Don't question me. :)

Anyway, I can probably see our police force falling behind. Of course, when you replace police cruisers and policemen with tanks and soldiers, I highly doubt any criminal would attempt anything.

I just... whatever.

Tsar Bomba, bomb was supposed to be 100MT but was reduced to 50MT to reduce Nuclear Fallout. Surprisingly, it had the 'cleanest' fallout to yield ratio of all atomic bombs.

yes which is not surprising when it was detonated about 600 meters above ground and the fallout cloud is still circling in the atmosphere

Well, the biggest ones were detonated in the Atlantic Ocean...

While we evaluated them to be our "cleanest" nuclear weapons, so far. :D

But ours are 20% cooler.

Anyway...

Greater Evil Imperial Japanese Dystopia wrote:
Prince Matsujima stepped forward with his HOWA Type 41 8.1mm sniper rifle, to demonstrate the might of the Imperial army's marksmen to all.

"Comrades, witness the power of extreme marksmenship!" he yelled, then aimed his rifle at a bull's eye. He open fired, shooting countless rounds in a perfect elegant manner, every single bullet reaching the bull's eye without missing a single hit. The other Japanese delegates applauded their excellence.

"This is an assault rifle mixed with a sniper rifle. It also has several adjustments. When shooting from this, the gun shoots bullets in a straight line, to constantly bombard the exact same point where you intended to shoot. For example, I shoot at one man, then the next 80 or so rounds land on the exact same spot I shot him at. Moreover, this gun can shoot 560 rounds per minute, without missing a single shot. It also works excellently with 8.1mm rounds, as I have just demonstrated, while the recoil is practically gone, using the same measures we tested on the metal storms pods." he added.

-snip-

I'm not sure if the Type 41 rifle, or at least the way you described it, is necessarily feasible, at least in a PMT setting.

For one, what was meant by shooting bullets in a straight line? Isn't that how firearms already work (and have done so since the invention of the musket)? If you mean that it has absolutely perfect accuracy, and don't provide an explanation as to why, then it's technically god-modding. All firearms have a deviance from the ideal aim. This can be minimized, sure, but complete elimination would require the use of materials and mechanisms that are completely flawless on the molecular level, which is physically impossible unless you construct and arrange the molecules manually. As that would require FFT-level technology to pull off, it would be safe to say that there would be at least a slight deviance in bullet placement due to imperfections in the bullet and barrel which tweak the velocity.

Second, like what I've mentioned to you about the recoil-less metal storms pods previously, the most effective way of reducing recoil to near-zero would be to have an active reactionary force against that of the recoil to counteract it. Though this is perfectly feasible for a naval vessel, which already has a nuclear reactor on board and thus could power such a mechanism, having a similar method, would be bulky on a rifle. Recoil suppression systems are possible, such as that on the AR-15, as would be a moving barrel, but neither are nearly 100% effective.

Of course, if you can detail the specific methods taken to reduce recoil and vector deviance to as near of a zero as you indicate in the IC post, I would be more convinced.

I won't comment much on the metal storm-like pistol. It's actually feasible. Relatively speaking.

Whoa whoa, GEIJD, a rifle with nuclear power? I mean, nuclear reactor miniaturization is certainly possible in a PMT setting, but even in an FT setting, we're talking scaling down to fit in a tank at the smallest. Unless you plan on plugging the gun into an external reactor, nuclear power is out of the question.

Supercapacitors, on the other hand, are a different question. I don't know how far PMT your nation is, but if somewhere in the mid- to far-PMT area (like YellowApple), creating supercapacitors from graphene sheets would result in rather high-capacity electrical storage. It may even be possible to include the capacitor as part of the magazine, so that when the mag is spent, a new one with a fresh and fully-charged capacitor could resume powering of the active recoil reduction system.

Like said, those are experimental weapons for now.

Right now, we are an early PMT nation, using late MT to mid PMT teachnology. However, We are coming close to late PMT with our experiments.

As for what you just said, I will go with what you suggested.

Alright then. Graphene-based capacitors specifically might be out of reach for early PMT (though it's possible with current technology, the problem lies in manufacturing a suitable quantity of graphene), but a NiMH cell would do the trick quite nicely if you go with the interchangeable-battery-pack-in-magazine idea. The mags would be heavy and bulky, but at least they would be feasible :)

In YellowApple's timeline, it would still be part of the United States (specifically, California) at the latest point of that storyline (and would continue to be until 2051), so I'd have to pass for sanity reasons.

Oh trust me, YellowApple's won't be very powerful; YellowApple doesn't use nuclear warheads, preferring orbital and aerial bombardments. They'll be pretty and spectacular, but certainly not as outrageously powerful.

Most YellowApplan warheads are fusion-based, as uranium and plutonium are both expensive as hell for YellowApplans and are needed more for fission power until fusion is sufficiently adopted. They also aren't very big and powerful, as they're designed for precise bombardments instead of mass destruction.
