Rehan sighed, brushing her hair as she looked over at her roommate's empty bed. She hoped to the spirits that it wouldn't be one of those Starlet girls. She didn't know if she could handle that much pretension. These rooms were too small for her and their ego. Maybe the girl from math? Mimiru, that was the name. Quiet, focused, not someone Rehan would mind in her space.

She sorted through her things, folding clothes and tucking them away in her drawers. There wasn't much in the way of personal effects: photographs that she slipped into the frame of her mirror, some small trinkets to remind her of home, and a wrapped care package from her squadmates. Even her DI had left her a present--a tin of boot polish and a soft cloth. It was nice to be missed. The girl punched her pillow once to soften it up and sighed, sitting down on the bed. She knew she should go talk to someone, but for a moment she felt the need to be homesick.

There were various groups within Fielding Preparatory Academy. Besides the Starlets, you had the "brains" - the geeky nerds of both sexes loathed by the popular students as undesirable elements - and the jocks who dominated the athletic scene at the academy. Most students did not seem to have any affiliation, though, or formed their own groups, most of which were merely groups of friends united by some common denominator such as a love of soccer or computers. As Starlets walked down the halls in their uniforms, smelling like the finest perfumes, they were noticing that the foreigners were taking notice of them. Lulu and Miri were quite happy to show themselves off to the foreigners, especially with Lulu winking flirtatiously at them, as if trying to seduce them. That was one of her special abilities. She could make any guy melt. It was fun to watch them. Like earthworms squirming in a little girl's hand. She passed by Vivian and Irikah, the two Ganosian princesses, but she does not speak to them, and they merely nod as she passes them. The Starlets know that attacks on the princesses would get them into shit with the Royal Family, especially when Vivian was a sister of the Queen herself - the inspiration of all Starlets lay in the words of the Queen, whose face appeared in fashion magazines all over Ganosia. Not even the highest ranking Starlet could attain such heights.

You could also see the Saradians. The Saradians were well known throughout their native Ganosia, where they were seen as exotic imports. Saradian fashion models graced magazines while Saradian nurses became the sultry banes of horny human teenagers who relied on their images to relieve stress during exams. Saradian girls looked quite lovely in their uniforms, it was said, and the boys could be seen hanging out with the human boys anytime. Then there were other forms of non-humans around. Irikah, herself, was half-reptilian. She headed over to the Fielding pool for the next period - she was the star swimmer on the swim team, after all. She, Vivian, Sarah, and other girls - including Rehan, who was apprehended by a zealous coach - all got sent to the changing rooms. The changing rooms were steamy and moist and filled with the shouting of girls. Lulu was mocking Kandajha, whose poverty-stricken origins were discovered, while Rehan was being chatted up by Sarah Turell, who had noticed her seemingly carefree singing of an army song and thought it struck a chord in her heart. The boys, meanwhile, but not all, were sent to the gymnasium for physical education. Xerxes and Sho were told to get immediately to class by stern teachers.

-----

"So," Sarah told Yuuki, "my name's Sarah Turell. You must be one of the foreign girls, right? Well, I'm your new roommate - I got told that when I asked some hotshot about where I was supposed to go and all. Hope you don't mind little old me bunking wit ya, eh?"

Sarah looked at herself in her swimsuit and smiled, happy to see that she hadn't gained any visible weight. She smacked Yuuki playfully upon the back and told her that she'd show her around the school. "Hey, it's what we gotta do around here for newbies like you." Then she went off to the pool area, being followed behind by some Saradian girls who were giggling amongst themselves. There was a commotion, though, when Lulu clapped as she walked from the bathroom area, having giving swirlies to Kandajha while insulting her poor origins. Miranda merely nodded, not bothering to speak on the matter at hand. The two Starlets soon left for the pool area themselves. Irikah and Vivian were already out in the pool area. Irikah was busy swimming madly around in the pool. Yuuki's roommate, Clarissa, introduced herself while Millie was told by the coach, who had the roster in her clipboard, that her roommate was Kandajha. "All of you need to get partnered with your roommates. Today's exercises require teamwork, understand? You must give your all to help your friends. Think of it as a simulation. You may need to help someone one day in a crisis situation....now. Our first drill shall be swimming laps. I want all of you to swim up and down the pool about ten times. Ready? Set? Go!"

Xerxes: "You are correct about my mother. There are many things I enjoy about Ganosia. But the main thing I like: the people. So diverse, so friendly... Of course, the Civil War is a bit different. But aside from that, you will learn much from the Ganosians. With a strong mind and an iron will, anyone can fly to the top. Even my father was once a peasant, until he put his mind to the test and united the tribes of Old Imperius."

Xerxes rushed to his physical education class, readied for his practices. Clad in his soccer jumpsuit, Xerxes readied himself for the trials of the teacher. Earlier in his life, Xerxes had learned he exhibited a good handle on his strength, and he inherited his father's speed and agility.

"Yes," Rehan said with a smile, shaking Mimiru's hand. "Now hurry, we need to be down at the pool."

It was a short dash anyway.

Rehan raised an eyebrow slightly at everyone's chattering, but followed along after she was dressed. She was uncomfortable in a swimsuit, though it had nothing to do with her shape--Rehan was built willowy, and she didn't have an ounce of fat on her body. She was all iron muscle and lean sinew. Still, it would be a hell of a lot better than trying to swim in full gear and boots. The poor treatment of Kandajha pissed her off, though, and she frowned deeply when she saw the one called Lulu. Someday, somewhere, you'll have your own, she promised silently. They were all in this together, weren't they?

She clapped Mimiru on the shoulder with a casual smile at the sound of the word "teamwork. "This will be fun," she said with a grin. "Don't worry, I have your back."

"Oh yeah swim class almost forgot." she grabbed her suit after digging through her case and dashed with her new mate down the hall to swim. She changed into her suit and got ready by stretching and warming up. "Thanks! Think we'll have a good year together as classmates."

Rehan hit the water like an otter, racing off. She was really starting to feel good now, after her run and now swimming. This place was great! Now if only they would give her more of a workout. The only thing that was missing was a DI screaming at her and a clock running out of time. "What's the matter, Nazarian? Can't take a goddamn river? Cry me a new one, Daddy's girl! Go! Go! Go!" She grinned as she gasped for a breath and finished her laps.

As soon as she hit the wall, she grabbed the edge and hauled herself up. It was like a pull up with a buddy hanging off her legs. She positively beamed at their instructor. "May I please have another, sir?" Rehan asked cheerfully, throwing a salute for the hell of it.

Yuuki was sitting at her desk daydreaming and doodling when Sarah came to her and started talking. She looked up and stood up quickly "Yes yes I am. So you will be my roomate? That sounds great I'm sure we'll get along fine." Yuuki stretched and got ready to dive in to take her laps. On the whistle blow she dove in and swam up and down the pool.

The - female! - instructor smirked as she watched Rehan. She seemed to be the most energetic student she had ever known. She was the first she'd seen on the same level as Irikah, who was the only one who managed to be on Rehan's pace throughout the swimming of the laps. Ten laps in total and both girls aced it without any trouble at all. In fact, Irikah even complimented Rehan, all the while the instructor told Rehan that she could swim again if she wanted while the other girls did the rest of the drills. Irikah even offered to swim with Rehan. While the instructor went to coach the other girls, whistling to stop Lulu from splashing Kandajha mercilessly, Rehan and Irikah went to their own section of the pool to swim and talk. Irikah introduced herself as the captain of the swim team and that she was a cousin of the Ganosian queen herself - Irikah pointed across the pool to Vivian, saying that Vivian was one of the Queen's sisters and that she was her best friend. "Vivian's been a good friend for me," Irikah said. "She's never been afraid of my appearances. I'd understand if you're creeped out. If you didn't know, I'm only half-human. Father is reptilian. Yeah. Mother's the human one."

Irikah laid on her back upon the water and chuckled. "You're the only girl I've ever seen who can swim like I can. I like that. You and I should spend time swimming together - we'd be able to compete in one of those competitions and win it, I'm sure. Your name is Rehan, right? Where do you come from, anyways?"

Irikah swam circles around Rehan momentarily before wading around idly. "Wanna race? You could actually give me a challenge."

Kadjha's first day was off to a pretty nasty her head was being dunked in and out of a the swimming pool. She didn't understand why she was being hazed she wasn't sure if this was some strange and frightening ritual. She helped the young children often at her home island in school and the little ones respected her. she also got along with her classmates very well and had friends. Here she was a stranger a young scared stranger. When she was aloud to breath freely without getting a mouthful of water "Please stop. I can't stand this." she coughed up water and crawled around a bit on the floor. This was as bad as being caught in a rip current almost only more degrading and not as dangerous.

"Nalaya, and yes, I'm Rehan," Rehan said with a smile. "And no, your appearance doesn't bother me. Trust me, I'd rather see you than my DI any day. Damn that bastard had an ugly mug--I love him to death, though. I'd never actually given much of a thought to swimming. This is just so much easier than being kicked off a bridge in full gear. Boots suck--I almost drowned the first time."

She stretched lazily and splashed some water up onto her face. Damn she felt good. Come to think of it, she really could go for a race now. She just wanted to do more. Maybe some push ups and pull ups? Yeah! "A race? Sounds great. You'll probably win, but I don't want to just sit down and wait for the others. How many laps?"

Then Rehan paused. "Hang on, I'll be right back."

She swam lazily up to Lulu and pulled Kadjha out of the water, pushing the poor girl behind her. "Want to pick on someone your own size, princess?" she said casually, flexing her fingers before making them into a fist. "Because you push this girl under the water one more time, and I'll kick your ass so hard you'll kiss your daddy on the cheek for going easy."

Irikah snickered while listening to the story that Rehan told. It reminded her of the years she spent in various camps and other functions, having to swim multitudes of laps and do even more multitudes of stretches and other exercises. She told Rehan all about such stories, but tried hard not to get embarassed when she heard Rehan reassure her that she did not have any ill will towards her based on her appearances. Meekly, Irikah muttered something about how she felt self-conscious too much for her own good despite Ganosia's tolerant spirit. But Irikah followed Rehan when Rehan went to save Kandajha from Lulu, who, having been pushed, wasn't exactly gonna just ditch without the final word. She looked over Rehan momentarily before scoffing at her with her tilted head. "You kick my ass and I can have your ass kicked out of Fielding. What's the matter? You in love with this runt or something? She's just gotta know her place in this academy."

Lulu merely flexed her arms and laughed while Miranda waited stoically behind her friend. "Rehan, right? Stay out of my business or you'll regret it. You'll find that the Starlets aren't to be messed with."

Lulu then swam away while Miranda followed close behind. While Irikah told Rehan that the Starlet leader wasn't joking about what she said, Miranda listened to Lulu rant about how Rehan had the audacity to challenge her authority. "Put her on the watch list. She does this shit again and we'll show her who's boss."

After coughing up some more water Kandaja got to her feet and spoke to Rehan. "Thanks for helping me. Those girls were really mean." she shook out her long hair and opened her eyes once the chemical sting wore off. She wasn't used to treated water like this, only salt or fresh water.

Rehan let out a hiss of angry breath, then looked over at Kadjha. "If she gives you any more shit, just tell me. I've got your back," she said. She gave the poor girl a reassuring pat on the shoulder. In all likelihood, Lulu wouldn't come back and hassle the girl more for the class period.

Consequences rarely factored into Rehan's decisions when someone else was at risk. She'd been forced to stand by and see terrible things helplessly. Now that she had the power to do something, she didn't ever stand by. Being expelled would be no big deal--the General would be proud. Help the helpless. Defend the weak. Behave with honor. I am going to punch that girl in the face if this happens again...

She sighed and looked back to Irikah. "Sorry. I don't honestly care whose strings she pulls. That shit is not going to fly. You might want to stand back when it comes to that--I don't want to get you in trouble too," Rehan said apologetically before relaxing her shoulders a little, since there wasn't going to be a fight right now. "We're all in this together, right? I wouldn't let someone do something like that to one of my family in the Army back home. I'm not letting it happen here."

Having stayed silent for so long, Irikah merely smiled. "Sure," she said, "let's do it. We'll swim up and down. Just like before. Good enough? Okay, let's go."

Soon enough, Irikah zoomed away into the water with her heart set on - even if this was a friendly race - victory.

Rehan shot after her, doing her best to swim after her newfound friend. Irikah was probably faster--she was on the swim team, after all--but Rehan loved a challenge. Her main selling point for the team was being able to keep up this kind of speed for hours and then going for a six mile run to cool down. She was the Energizer Bunny of physical exercise, mainly because it helped manage her condition. It gave her a situation where her adrenaline rushes made sense, and she could work out her anger through exertion. Plus, the endorphins helped her sleep at night.

By the time their laps ended, Rehan finally felt warmed up. She poked her head up above the water and laughed. "Great! Now what's everyone else doing? I'm feeling good." Winning or losing didn't matter. But she was impressed. Irikah was fast and much more graceful in the water. An inherited trait, or an earned one? She didn't think it would be polite to ask.

Sho complied immediately, and even though he was rather clumsy by nature, his sheer determination was enough for him to do the track and field exercises. He hoped there would be a pick-up soccer game in the end, though - and teaming up with Xerxes would also be nice if he had the chance.

Xerxes proved his strength as he did the exercises he was required to do, such as push-ups and the like. Feeling pumped after doing so, Xerxes wanted to run. The energy flowed throughout his body, allowing for him to run as fast as he could for a couple of minutes. Running the length of the gymnasium enough times to equal a mile, Xerxes finished his run in 5:49, his 3rd best time. Now ready to comply with any sport, exercise, or trial that anyone had placed upon his broad shoulders.

<Raquel Perinski sighed softly as she unpacked her belongings. Already she was uncomfortable. She had packed her finest suits and dresses, intending to, right from the very beginning, showcase her privileged Rumbrian upbringing. Instead these... Barbarians had forced her into some hideous 'uniform'. Allegedly, this was one of the best schools in this hellhole - A thought that Perinski found bemusing at first and downright terrifying after some thought - Such stifling of creativity! A headmaster who stood so proud and used so many empty words as if he thoroughly read and enjoyed The Prince, without understanding that it was a parody.>

<Regardless, as she hung up her collection of exquisite dresses and expensive suits she reflected on the fact that there were other foreigners present: At least one of them may show some semblance of civility and class. With great care Raquel withdrew from her suitcase an ornate black briefcase. Within this rested one of the finest bottles of Rumbrian wine with two clear crystal glasses. She had resolved to, on the plane journey to her new home, invite whoever was sharing a room with her to toast the prospective success of the coming year, regardless of how likely or unlikely such an outcome seemed.>

<Her work done, the room suitably personalised, Perinski brushed her golden hair out of her eyes and left for her first class. Physical education. Fucking wonderful.>

<Aaaand it was exactly as she had imagined. Testosterone fuelled bullshit. Races and push ups and generally showing off. Having changed into her (only) gym outfit, Perinski yawned and stretched and awaited some kind of order. This was one class that she would not be showing any initiative in.>
So goddamned leet: Rumbria is ranked 6th in the region and 1,337th in the world for Most Godforsaken.

Hengji was lying down on her bed in her modest dormitory, exhausted from unpacking and cleaning up. Ganosia was extremely different from Rastynhaven after all. The moment she stepped onto the academy grounds, Hengji was mesmerized by its beauty. Yet, there was a strange feeling about it. Perhaps it was the emptiness of magic in the air, the snooty attitudes of the other students, or perhaps even the mandatory uniforms that made her regret her decision to leave Rastynhaven.
"What's done is done", Hengji thought sadly, as she wondered who her roommate was and what she was like.
"No magic for several years, it's like living in the Dark Ages!", said Hengji out loud, already sad that she left her family, her friends, and that Ngeq boy who asked her out a week before her departure.
"If only I could remember his name, eh it'll pop into my head sooner or later."

Hengji then proceeded to do nothing but wait for her roommate to come in.
