Moderator: Hello and Good Evening, citizens of both the United Estates and of the Western Isles to Veaux University’s Nicholas Favre School of Political Science and the First Presidential Debate, sponsored in part by Arendai International “Reporting what matters to all the Western Isles”. I am your host, Lucas James. For the next three hours, we will have all the Presidential candidates debate the following topics: The future of the Dormill-Stiuraian Economy, Gael Four and the Cooperative Union, and foreign policy of the United Estates in the East.
Without further ado, please join me in welcoming the Presidential Candidates, Mrs. Bertille Bellerose of the Liberal Party, Diplomatic Manager for the Argus Region and Most Honorable Ambassador to the United People of Xrevaro, Mr. Hal Theunissen of the Communist and Socialist Party, Mr. Windsor Leblanc of the Environmentalist Front, the Most Honorable Mr. Philippine Lémieux of the Liberal Party, Minister of the Treasury, Mr. Luus Fay of the Conservative Party, Mr. Justin Abraham of the Center-National Party, and finally Mr. Cedar Dyson of Dormill and Stiura Forwards. It is my great pleasure to welcome all of you to the Nicholas Favre School of Political Science and on behalf of the great citizens of the United Estates, we hope to hear the very best from you all tonight. We will start with a general question to warm you up, Mr. Lémieux, what is your personal view of the future of the Dormill-Stiuraian Economy under your leadership, either as President of Minister of Treasury?
Philippine Lémieux: Thank you, Mr. James. As a whole, I see great progress and growth for the economy under my continued leadership. Though we are in a deficit as of now, the aim is to enhance our position as a creditor among our neighbors and increase investment into our economy. As President, I plan to also bring more freedoms for our companies and allow them to become more competitive in a new and fast growing market. The United Estates has bountiful potential just waiting to be put to use for the betterment of all.
Hal Theunissen: I would say that reining in the fat cats who drain the wealth from our people is more necessary for out growth than allowing them to operate with even more freedoms. More wealth for our citizens will allow them to then reinvest in sectors where they best think the money goes, not investors in New Avillon.
Windsor Leblanc: And here I thought I’d never hear a more backwards policy for economic growth in my life. You both are clearly disregarding the environmental impact of such hasty action. There’s still global climate change to worry about and the impacts our industries have on it and we have two people already disregarding that for their own personal gain!
Bertille Bellerose: We could also try to compromise on this, gentlemen. We clearly need to become more competitive in order to deal with our new deficit but we shouldn’t do that at either the expense of the average citizen or our fragile environment. As President I would work to balance all three to benefit everyone.
Luus Fay: It’s evident that this new deficit caused by the Most Honorable Minister of the Treasury is going to start sucking our economy dry if we don’t do something about it. We need to get control of our budget back and that can only be done by cutting unnecessary spending, even if many social programs that we tout over our neighbors have to suffer for it. Crucially, our nation must be properly defended from any kind of attack, including economic, which demands that we accumulate wealth through a vast surplus before our enemies abroad or at home starts to target our still growing industries.
Justin Abraham: I have to agree with Mr. Fay on most of his points, the defense of our nation is crucial if we are to become more competitive in the modern marketplace. Even if many programs have to suffer for it, the Dormill-Stiuraian Defense Forces, according to a study conducted back in 2014, quote, “[Requires] a budget increase of at least another 10% relative to the total budget of the United Estates Government in order to accomplish all missions necessary for our future defense.”, end quote.
Cedar Dyson: Though I don’t support it entirely, I have to agree with the Most Honorable Minister of the Treasury that what Dormill and Stiura needs is greater investment from beyond our borders. Yet at the same time, many of our social programs have become bloated with budgets far beyond what is necessary or proper for the tasks they perform. If we were to streamline these organizations and operated them like actual competing businesses, we will start to see that we can actually redirect a lot of money from them back to the citizens who need it the most.Moderator: Thank you all for your insightful comments. The next question is, “What are your views on potential membership of the United Estates to with the Gael Four or the Cooperative Union?”, we’ll start again with Mr. Lemieux.
Philippine Lémieux: Cooperation between our neighbors in both Gael and further abroad is very necessary for the future survival of the United Estates, the Civil War has very much proven that. But I wouldn’t be too hasty in joining vast interregional organizations that have the power to govern over the entire nation. That being said, working better with these two in the realm of economy and security is in our best interests and I would focus on that as President.
Hal Theunissen: I call it complete hogwash to try and work with either organization. Both are only in to benefit the top of society and will do nothing for the workingman when they need it the most. I would argue that cooperation with fellow socialists in the East would best suit the needs of our nation than working with G4 or the CU.
Windsor Leblanc: The two organizations are have plenty of potential for our future growth but I would not focus on participation too much as they both have arguably overreaching branches that would stomp on policies back home if they are off from the goal of the majority. If anything, closer ties with our neighbors in Gael takes precedent rather than entangling ourselves in the web of shadows that is the CU.
Bertille Bellerose: I would most definitely continue Madame President Richelieu’s current plan of joining both organizations and taking real action within them to provide much needed leadership and direction that would benefit both. The United Estates under my Presidency would additionally focus on forging new relationships in the East and broadening our cooperation to nations we rarely interacted with before.
Luus Fay: I believe that membership in either or both organizations would be invaluable to Dormill and Stiura if we are to return to a position of leadership in the affairs of the Western Isles. That being said, it would be best to start locally with the G4 and prove ourselves as capable international leaders there before we broaden our scope to the CU, whose membership does include questionable governments and leaders.
Justin Abraham: Participation in either organization is going to be costly against us in terms of influence on the international stage. We must be wary of who we start associating ourselves with before we make a huge mistake and start working with those who’d rather see the United Estates become dependent on some other nation.
Cedar Dyson: Both organizations present amazing opportunities for the United Estates to advance in the regional stage and prove to all of our detractors that we have fully recovered from the horrible civil war of only a generation ago. It should be a priority for the next administration to focus on gaining membership in either or both organizations and work closely with our allies in the region already. Ultimately, I am very confident in seeing Dormill and Stiura as a member of the CU and the G4, hopefully we can change it to the G5.Moderator: And finally, starting with Mr. Dyson, is there a future for Dormill and Stiura in the East?
Cedar Dyson: At the moment, I can see that there is potential for a lot of development with eastern nations, though with the existence of the EUSR, that potential is at risk of being soured. While it’s hard to say if the United Estates should turn its interests to the East, it may become necessary before other powers in the area realize the amount of untapped potential in the area, the San Javier Conflict being only the start of a much greater conflict for dominance in the region.
Justin Abraham: There is a very certain future for the United Estates in the East, and it should start, however, with our border in the north being secured. The former Republic of Avran has been overrun by the dictatorial regime in Noronica that has caused more harm than good not only for the small Republic, but for the bordering region between it and the Estate of New Friesland. Until this issue has been resolved and Noronica has been removed from the mainland of Gael, then we can’t hope to even consider a future in the East.
Luus Fay: I agree with Mr. Abraham, our northern frontier must be secured before we can start talking about the East and our future in it.
Bertille Bellerose: Our concern shouldn’t lie with the activities of the eastern Isles, but the western ones, where conflicts spring up like wildfire, and where we must focus on. The EUSR is a concern, don’t get me wrong, but considering most of our partners in the west agree that it should not exist, then it would be better for the United Estates to stand in solidarity with the west rather than try to face the east alone.
Windsor Leblanc: I’m going to make things short and frank, just like the East is, we shouldn’t go there. It’s pointless, a waste of our time and resources, and will only further result in more environmental catastrophes than we would want. I say we don’t have a future at all if we go East.
Hal Theunissen: I have to adamantly disagree with both the Honorable Ms. Bellerose and Mr. Dyson in that the EUSR may actually be a source of great wealth for our people. With most of the west refusing to associate themselves with the new state, if we could then the people of our nation can reap the benefits of grand trade agreements with the EUSR that nearly no other nation out here will have.
Philippine Lémieux: I don’t really see why we should be concerning ourselves with the East at all. At this point it looks like a lost cause to me with nothing but violence and uncertainty reigning over the entire area. Our efforts shouldn’t be vested in there any more if it is already and instead we should look to the west for future growth.
Moderator: Thank you all for attending tonight’s debate and I hope that you all have a successful race this year. With that, viewers, we would also like to bid you a good night.

The situation in Merrit can best be summed up as this. According to the Montevideo Accords of 1933, whose standards a potential state is measured against, defines as a state if it meets all three of it's main categories. The first category is a specific territory to control. That role is filled by the Isle of Merrit itself. The second is a population to control. That is met by the Merritians on said Isle. The third is a political authority that retains at least partial control of said territory or population. This third category is controversial at best, and the good diplomats in Atnaia would have us believe that this is not so. While the Atnaian police appear to be letting Merrit slip like sand through their fingers, said sand is not exactly falling into the MLF's hands.
I'd like to take a moment to clarify: We are not endorsing or recognizing Merrit or Merritia as a state. We are waiting for either the MLF to gain full political control of the island and people on it, or for the Atnaian government to remove the uprising altogether. We find that if a group is moving for recognition, the worst path it could take would be to stoop low to the levels of organized criminals.
I would also like to take a moment for the countries who recognized the MLF as a government to reconsider their recognition- it does nothing to move it forwards or backwards in most of the international community. As the Accords of 1933 state, a state does not need international recognition to exist, and international recognition does not simply create a state. All they are doing is worsening their relations with a weakened but still powerful nation in the Southwest Mesder region.

The first round proved to be a massive blow to the conservative establishment in Javana, and President Sangwoo's team knew that the last 10 days of the race had to be fully revamped if the polls were to be proven wrong on the 8th. During the final day, Ms. Simon (LabDem) took a more safe approach to campaigning, which is often done by those who lead in the polls as to not tarnish their chances with a some sort of public gaffe. Mr. Sangwoo on the other hand, knowing he had to fight an uphill battle,
doubled down on his public appearances and engagement with the voters. In the ten days leading up to the vote, Mr. Sangwoo toured 12 municipalities and 31 provinces, a record high number compared to Ms. Simon -- who in the inter-election period made conservative appearances in only 4 municipalities and 13 provinces, mostly labour strongholds such as Orebro and Croton City. Another important set was the sudden surge in pro-federalist rhetoric by Mr. Sangwoo, a move which gained him support of the leadership of the third biggest party -- the Federal Liberals. The neutrality of populist left MCJ of the Popular Republican Movement also led for a higher rate of abstention for the left-wing vote, ultimately leading to the defeat of the left-wing candidate Ms. Simon. As expected, the Nationalist Party, Independence Party and Democratic Movement all backed Mr. Sangwoo -- while the Socialists and some voices in the PRM backed Ms. Simon for President. Ultimately, these dynamics culminated in a very close race for president.
Although Mr. Sangwoo and conservatives can sigh a breath of relief at their phyrric victory, everyone's eyes are set on the legislative elections to come, where the odds are even less clear than those for the presidency.

The New Shanowinn Telegraph
The Better TelegraphMeet the Two Parties That Will Decide the Future of Shanowinn
Although just a few days ago (September 7th) Shanowinn's civil war officially ended, the nation must engage in another kind of conflict. This conflict will not be pursued through military and paramilitary action, but through political dialogue.
Currently, Karolíne Catrín Fáolain is acting as the provisional leader of Shanowinn. Fáolain is also the leader of the New Shanowinn Republican Party, the socio-political arm of the New Owinn Front which fought against the Ahern. The NSRP wishes to rebuild Shanowinn as a Republic rather than maintain the Ahernry.
By contrast the Traditional Ahernry Party hopes to preserve the Ahernry. Despite denouncing Chulainn NaAchill, some view their wishes to maintain the Ahernry as controversial and imprudent considering the actions of the previous Ahern. The TAP has fired back that the NSRP will destroy the Owinn identity, something many already struggle with in the wake of the war and Chulainn NaAchill.
According to preliminary polls, most Owinns support the New Shanowinn Republican Party, but the TAP cannot be ignored. Polls suggest that NSRP support may be as high as 55-60%, and TAP support could reach 30-35%, with 5-10% split between other parties or indecision. These same polls indicate the presence of at least two small minority parties, namely the New Shanowinn Worker's Party and the Island Liberation Party. Both are believed to have around 2-3% of the population supporting them, while undecided Owinns may number as high as 6%.
All of the parties, especially the two major ones, will certainly direct their efforts towards the 6% of undecided Owinns, in order to gain as much support as possible. Even though Karolíne Fáolain is the provisional leader of the country, and most support her party, she claimed that she does not intend to exercise much authority or tackle many issues until she has been officially chosen through an election. The emergency election will likely occur on October 1st, 2017.

The New Shanowinn Telegraph
The Better TelegraphHighland Republic President Okays Controversial Medal Ceremony
One week has passed since President Tadhg Dúney of the Highland Republic and provisional leader Karolíne Fáolain of Shanowinn negotiated the end of the civil war. Owinns have been enthusiastic about repairing the nation, but the latest news from the Highland Republic casts doubt upon the rebuilding process.
Highland sources exposed the Highland Republic's plan to hold a public medal ceremony honoring Highland volunteers who fought for the New Owinn Front (NOF) in the Lowlands. President Dúney banned the Highland Republican Army (HRA) from pursuing Ahernric forces down into the Lowlands, but that didn't stop some former HRA soldiers from joining the NOF as unofficial volunteers.
According to President Tadhg Dúney, the ceremony will still be held this weekend. Controversy surrounds the planned event. Some Lowland Owinn critics have described the planned event as "inflammatory," and "illegal" since those the HRA planned to honor were not officially representing the Highland Republican Army.
In his statement, President Dúney confirmed that the event will still occur, but he also assured that the ceremony's original plans have been altered accommodate Lowland criticisms. "Originally," he said, "the [Highland] Army was going to award the recipients with their respective honors. Now, the Army will host the event, but it is I who will bestow honors, as the premier civil representative of the Highland Republic."
The provisional leader of Shanowinn, Karolíne Catrín Fáolain, has not invested herself in the matter beyond issuing a brief statement. In her statement she thanked President Dúney for changing the plans so that the President, as a civil representative, will reward the volunteers. She further claimed that the alteration has been noted as a gesture of good faith, and hopes that the two of them can work together in the future if she is officially elected the leader of Shanowinn. Thus far Karolíne Fáolain has expressed her fear of becoming involved in state affairs prematurely before seeing the results of the emergency election, which could elect her as leader.

Sovereign Passes Away at 96
For the past three days Kurylhusi Palace has remained silent, flying the national standard at half mast indicating that a member of the Chief Family has passed away. Today, Palace Representative Husu Awakni announced the tragic news in an emergency international press conference that the Great Sun of Onikarha has passed away, due to natural causes from old age. “Our Great Sun, representative and revered speaker of our people, country, first child of the sun, has passed away this morning.” Awakni stated, assuring that, “Our sovereign did not cross over alone, he was in the company of immediate family and died with benevolent words to the nation.”
A national day of leave have been declared for non-essential work, for a period of mourning.
Jyokno Sarul as he was known before he became ‘Great Sun’ as his ancestors before him, is renown for continuing the reforms of his father’s short lived reign as ruler of the nation, after the end of its lengthy warring period and political dissent. As the Chief of the nation, Great Sun, was not traditionally hereditary, there was a great deal of speculation regarding the legitimacy of his reign. Sarul continued to enforce national reforms to create a patriotic identity in the country with the newer generations, while healing the old.
Slowly, Sarul transferred power from the Chiefdoms and his seat to a more modern government, and squashed foreign backed attempts to inject a westernized socialist administration. Many saw his rule as brutal but necessary, today because of the passed Great Sun’s efforts, the country is prosperous and united, with a central identity.
“His legacy will never be forgotten and we will seek to name him the 16th Sentinel of Onikarha.” Lord Monk Weschana has stated, from Cloud Jade Temple.
High Governor, Qulan Peri, addressed the nation shortly after the announcement, commemorating Great Sun as a, “Man of high moral and social status, who did what he could to unite the nation.”
It is unsure who will become Great Sun now, though many speculate on a few candidates. The High Priesthood says they will announce when the time is right, which is likely after the Burning Ritual(funeral) of the former Great Sun.
Many worry however that this may spark long boiling uprisings, particularly in the more rural and past clinging parts of the countries, communities who claim they were oppressed by the Great Sun, mostly minorities with little factual evidence for their claims that Sarul was somehow a ‘Tyrant’ and a ‘False Sun’. There are some extreme political elements that tout ‘Equalist’ ideology, however officials affirm that their threat is mute.
Despite these threats, Onikarha will prosper and accept the new Great Sun which the High Priesthood will bestow on the nation. Meanwhile, the High Governor has ordered a postponement in upcoming elections until after the funeral.
