The Nation Celebrates the Birthday of Etifedd Tywysoges Gwynyth

Almost two weeks after the capital was gripped by fear as SUSa forces attacked the Kavoene embassy the whole nation now rejoices as it celebrates the birthday of its beloved Crown Princess, Gwynyth, who today turns fifteen, just one year short of her majority. Despite the recent troubles in the capital celebration plans which were laid months in advance have gone ahead as scheduled with the small addition of extra policing. A series of parades through the ancient heart of the city by the Swiftriver Regiment and various civic institutions, which is the Princess' own army unit. The day has been declared a public holiday and school children were encouraged to join in with the various street parties and carnival attractions which could be found throughout the city. Meanwhile a live performance by some of the country's most celebrated musicians was held in the Royal Arena, to which the Princess herself attended; tickets for the performance were granted by lottery and as a result the audience included people of all ages and from all walks of life.

Later in the day the Princess appeared in the Tai Senedd to give her first official speech before the assembled dignitaries and politicians of the nation. The theme of the speech was upbeat and optimistic, and spoke volumes for Her Royal Highness' personality; speaking about the need to address inequality within society, and the need to continue offering financial and material aid to those less fortunate. She also touched on the subject of the process of reform to a Constitutional Monarchy stating that as the future Teyrna she looked forward to a better future in which her people could all have their say. Elsewhere in tir Lhaeraidd musical performances, carnivals, and traditional fayres were held to celebrate the occasion with every town and village enjoying some form of festivity.

Finally as the day's celebrations came to an end the Princess attended a formal ceremony at the Royal Arena where she was met by a huge crowd of children and young people who had been chosen from the poorer sections of the country; each was given a gift, while one Rowan O'Finlay, a patient at St. Bridget's Children's Hospital who has terminal cancer was brought up to meet the Princess in person and receive a gift from her in person. The gift in question was a brand new laptop computer which Rowan had been asking his parents for so that he could continue his charitable work for organisations supporting other children with terminal illnesses. However arguably the greatest gift the Princess gave to the young man came at the end of the presentation when she gave him a hug and announced that his charitable foundation would be receiving a donation of 12 million Aurarians taken out of the Royal Allowance.

Former President Erik Vestergaard passed away in his sleep Thursday, 12 January 2017, at around 11 o'clock PM, after three years of battling liver cancer. Former President Vestergaard will be remembered for his devotion to the country and as a public servant to which all should aspire to measure up to. Beginning his career in service to the Republic at age 21, in 1945, when Vestergaard joined the Glanish Navy as an Ensign. By the time he was only 37, Vestergaard had become Vice Admiral Vestergaard and was instrumental in 1961 to refine naval training practices for sailors and was an especially effective advocate for the expansion of the Glanish navy throughout the first half of the 1960s. By 1967, he had become Admiral Vestergaard and was chosen to serve as Chief of Defense in 1970. Retiring at the age of 50 after four years as the Chief of Defense of Glanodel's armed forces, Admiral Vestergaard entered the field of politics. From 1976 until 1980, Admiral Vestergaard served as Representative Vestergaard in the Folketing and later served a single term as a minister in the Landsting from 1980 to 86.

Vestergaard's presidential campaign began in the summer of 1986 and that fall, he was elected to office by a two to three majority popular vote. From 1986 until 1992, Vestergaard served as the President of Glanodel and is, today, ultimately attributed with creating the modern Glanish military as it is today. Not only did the President help to increase the country's defense budget and ensure that mobilization capacity was improved upon, President Vestergaard also helped to strengthen legal services for armed service members, signed Executive Order 2503.8B which ensured the fair treatment of all service members and officially allowed transgender service members in 1990, and led the campaign for greater awareness of sexual harassment and assault in the armed forces.

Admiral, C.O.D., Representative, Minister, and President Erik Vestergaard will be remember most for his devotion and loyalty, for his unrelenting dedication to public service, and for his deeply rooted and forever unwavering love of this country.

With the passing of Former President Vestergaard last week the armed forces celebrated his memory and years of service with the commissioning of the Navy's newest aircraft carrier, FRS Vestergaard. Now the largest aircraft carrier in the fleet and one of the most technologically sophisticated naval vessel in the world, to-date, President Svendsen announced at the commissioning ceremony that the carrier's construction was only the first in what will be a strong period of naval expansion for the country. Rumors still surround the President's feelings toward the recent shifts in Newreyan social and foreign policy and rumors continue regarding the erosion of Newreyan-Glanish relations and where Landsmeet officials stand on the issue. While there have been no official statements from Herregård, recent efforts to strengthen the national own national defenses still raise questions.

Secretary of Health and Social Welfare Malene Svendsen announced plans earlier this week for the launch of the United Medical System, or UMS for short. After nearly a decade of research, electronic integration within the public healthcare system, and technological improvements in internet accessibility, the Health and Social Welfare Department has finally acknowledged that it will create a system through which healthcare providers can access a large, nationwide database which houses the medical records of all Glanish patients. While the team responsible for designing the network, the EMR Projects, claims that the project is on track and that initial, pre-launch tests are moving along as planned, the team has also made its concerns over issues they claim are unavoidable.

While the EMR Project claims that creating centralized databases containing the sheer amount of raw personal information that this network will contain presents a number of cyber-security vulnerabilities, the program itself is expected to encounter issues immediately upon launch when medical providers across the country access the network for the first time. Still, despite the concerned raised by all parties involved, EMR has been quick to urge the country to trust that this development will help to improve medical care throughout the country and that developments which arise from the network's creation will inevitably lead to further innovations in electronics and networking technology.

Planned Invasion of the Moon Cancelled

A long standing tactical brief used by the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces General Staff as a tactical experiment and test for new staff officers in which it is proposed that Sagitean soldiers invade the Moon, has been retired. The plan which gained widespread notoriety in 2008 when it was leaked, involved such highly improbably strategies as giant harpoons so as to prevent the Moon from moving, and giant catapults to launch soldiers onto the celestial body, sparked controversy which continues to this day in the form of jokes and conspiracy theories. This Moon invasion brief has been read and altered by generations of young Sagitean staff officers and is now being dropped in favour of a more modern and 'realistic' scenario; "Defence Against Fish People".

The announcement still leaves in doubt the status and relevance of the Moon Mining paper used by the Department of Natural Resources, and the Moonscaping brief used by the Department for Infrastructure.

Coup d'Etat in Port Arthur

After months of poor leadership and failure under President Marcus van der Veld the government has today returned to some semblance of efficacy and ability, after units from the 5th Voortrekkers, supported by elements from the 7th Armoured and the air force's Alpha Squadron, seized control of the government from the President. The Military Officer's Committee for National Security, a group of disgruntled military officers who organised and led the coup, have now placed Lt.-Col. Richard Dawkins in command of the beleaguered government and ArKav forces. Dawkins, who has now been given the brevet rank of Field Marshal by the Committee, has been a vocal critic of van der Veld's handling of the war, and of his efforts to contain the spiralling economic crisis in the face of foreign embargoes.

The coup itself started in the early hours of the morning was over over by 18:00 this evening, when the Vice President announced the dissolution of van der Veld's government and the surrender of loyalists to the President. Tanks moved into key intersections in the capital while soldiers disembarked from armoured vehicles to enter and occupy government buildings. Local police remained loyal to the President and attempted to resist the Committee's forces, leading to several running battles around key police buildings; this violence petered out however after the National Police Commissioner ordered the police in Port Arthur to stand down at 15:20 local time. The only other violence erupted around the Presidential Compound, where the Presidential Guard and Special Security Detachment fought to protect the President and his family.

At this time it is not known where the former President and his family are, however it is believed that the SSD used the Presidential Guard and fighting at the compound as a smokescreen to smuggle them safely out of the city. A helicopter attempting to leave the compound was shot down by Committee forces, however the bodies recovered were those of senior Presidential aides and advisors, not the President or his family. As of right now the situation in Port Arthur is peaceful, the Committee forces are patrolling the streets carrying out police duties, as the local police have been disarmed and detained. However elsewhere the situation is more tense with military commanders and local governors in Shincliffe and Langley refusing to recognise the Committee or Dawkins as the legitimate leadership of the nation, and it is suspected the the President may attempt to flee to the southern islands to rally support for his toppled regime.

Meanwhile in Port Arthur Field Marshal Dawkins made a public announcement issuing a state of emergency and suspending the constitution, effectively placing the nation under martial law. This, he insists, is a precautionary measure in a time of war which should have been taken by President van der Veld, had he been a competent ruler. In addition the Field Marshal formally called upon the Araabyner militia leaders to report in to Port Arthur so that they could be properly armed and supported, and be integrated into the wider war effort. The announcement was also made to issue the news that conscription was being put into effect so as to combat the dire manpower shortages now faced by ArKav forces.

The People's Democratic Republic of Sheera is Born!

A message from our glorious leader, Chairman of the Socialist Union and now President of Sheera, Dr Truman Kumbukani:
"Today the racist vipers have ripped their own 'democratically' elected leader from his ivory tower and cast him out of their 'golden city' Port Arthur. Today they have ceased to hold any shred of legitimacy that they may once have had. Under van der Veld Kavo at least had the legitimate claim to represent the white minority in this land, but now, with this Mr Dawkins in command they are nothing but another military dictatorship with a rump government run by a corrupt and short sighted junta. Today I proclaim the end of Kavo and their Commonwealth, in its place rises the People's Democratic Republic of Sheera; let us abandon our Asuranised names and adopt the name for the land which our ancestors gave it. This earth belongs to the white man alone no longer, that regime is done, Kavo is done. The sun sets tonight on Kavo, tomorrow it rises over Sheera, a free and democratic nation."

"I give this ultimatum to Mr Dawkins and his 'government' here and now. Surrender, cease this fighting and negotiate a peace so that the white man may take his place in our democratic future. The alternative, refusal to do this, will result in war and blood and we will not stop until we have bent the knees of every white man in this land! I do not want to fight, the earth has been watered enough with the blood of young men, from both sides. I weep for the loss of these soldiers, even those who fall fighting for your bigoted cause, for they fight for a poisonous ideal which has entered their minds and rotted their brains. But now I give you the choice; cease the fighting and negotiate. Your refusal shows only one thing, that this cancer has taken over and that the only cure is to remove it by force."

"For now I shall wait, and look to the future of my nation. My government is establishing itself in the city the white man calls Lanchester, but which we call Umbwezi; there is much that must be done, our country must be rebuilt, our wounded must be treated. Dawkins, you have 48 hours to consider my words and respond; if after that time no reply has been received you shall face the full might of the Army of the Sheeran Democratic Republic without reprieve until you surrender unconditionally or are trampled into dust. This process will start with Haag; think on the horrors that this city has faced under siege, and think on how much worse they will be when I rain fire upon it from the sky. I am not a man who looks for war, but I shall fall upon my foe with the Lord's own fury when roused."

Statement from Marcus van der Veld

A message from ousted President of Kavo and President of the Provisional Republic of the Araabyne, Marcus van der Veld:
"Today I have been removed from power by a man I considered a loyal and dutiful member of the senior staff of the armed forces of Kavo, Mr Richard Dawkins. I accept the fact that I no longer hold the post of President of Kavo, for that post ceased to exist the moment that the Commonwealth ceased to exist, and that occurred and 18:00 this evening when Richard Dawkins suspended the constitution. Make no mistake, it remains my fondest wish to see Kavo united and peaceful, however I must face and accept the facts as they are, and the facts make abundantly clear that Kavo, for the time being, no longer exists. I listened to the broadcast by Dr Kumbukani over the radio as I was spirited away to Shincliffe and while I am concerned by some of his rhetoric I feel that he and I are now fighting for the same thing. A unified Kavo, or Sheera, for the name of the land does not matter so long as it is whole and peaceful."

"I have been urged by the local governor here in Shincliffe, Mr Oliver van Sloot, and his military staff, including the head of the former Kavoene Navy, Admiral Amos Slate, to form the Provisional Republic of the Araabyne, so as to resist the corrupt rule of Dawkins and ArKav. I have also been advised to use the Provisional Republic as a vehicle for peace, a means by which an equitable peace may be achieved even if Mr Dawkins should refuse Dr Kumbukani's ultimatum. I know that this may seem odd, given my commitment to maintain white minority rule in Kavo up until now, however I am not a blind nor foolish man; I must accept the facts as they appear and the situation as it unfolds. It is now clear in both cases that the continuation of white minority rule in Kavo is no longer possible in a practical sense, and since I did not advocate its continuance on the grounds of racial prejudice, but on personal conviction in the rightness of the status quo, I now see no reason to seek its continuance."

"My supporters here agree with this assessment and sentiment, and together we have also agreed that the highest priority must be the protection of our country's unity and the maintenance of a peaceful society. Therefore I now address Dr Kumbukani directly; I accept your ultimatum, and such forces as remain loyal to me and who proclaim loyalty to the Provisional Republic will cease all offensive military operations against your forces. I am prepared to negotiate a settlement with you for the peaceful transition of Kavo, or Sheera, from white minority rule to majority rule. I am prepared to work with you to end this war, even if it means that I must send soldiers to fight against my fellow Araabyne people."

Ballot Initiative suggested by Director Saria De Quintus to end relations with Kavo passes

On Monday 2nd the Honorable, the Director of Justice, Police and Transport, Saria De Quintus, proposed a Ballot Initiative to the nation proposing the withdrawal of Crylante's recognition of the Commonwealth of Kavo, and stopping all Crylantian exports to the nation until it ends the segregationist policies that the nation has pursued in recent times, and to condemn the actions of the current government.

The referenda was scheduled for Tuesday 19th, with the polls closing at 8pm local time, which made it the first referenda in 2017. The referenda was passed, with 78.9% of the Crylantian Federation voting for the measure, and 21.1% of the Federation voting against the measure, with 83.1% turnout. In response, the Honorable, the Director for Foreign Affairs, Silvanus Le Grande, has taken a measure to close the Crylantian embassy in St. Arthur.

The referenda result was consistently strongly for across the entire Federation, being one of the few referenda not to show a distinct divide between the West and East. The lowest result was 68.7% for in Dybøll, presumably due to a concern of the population of the state, which drives the chocolate industry of the nation, that their economic success would be damaged by the passage of the referenda. The highest result was 90.1% for in Lentini, due to the strongly anti-racist stance of the progressive community surrounding the island city's university and science research facility, which are known for exceedingly high vote percentages for the green-progressive Green Party and the social-liberal People's Party.

The Council had released an advisory vote last week, in which the 225-seat Assembly of the People and the 51-seat Assembly of the States both voting unanimously for the result, not counting 19 abstentions. Liana Vescovi, the current Chief Director of the National Council and Director of Finance, of the Reform Party, has called the result 'a step in the right direction' and 'a step towards our nation's key values of freedom, equality and quality of opportunity, tolerance and a strong democratic tradition' in a speech given just minutes after the result.

Recent Influx Of Foreign Talents Into The CPSN Welcome
21 January 2017
It appears that with the new year comes new suprises, as immigration statistics showed an influx of non-slavic permanent-resident immigrants to the CPSN since the start of January. Although such situations are frowned upon in some countries, most in the CPSN are happy to see this, and not without reason: The country's economy has been experiencing a boom in recent years due to foreign investment and increased globalisation.
"This new batch of immigrants will help to fill in the increased job availability and ensure that our recent growth will not slow down anytime soon", Head of State Yunishinka, Plynishka Reyjak, commented yesterday. The data shows that more than 68% of the 38,000 new permanent residents are aged 30 and below. Many of the reasons given when applying for citizenship were related to job opportunities and work. "Many say that these new immigrants might deprive our younger generation of jobs. I'm not saying they are incorrect, rather, I believe that competition helps to create diversity in our market. Our school-leavers are going to have to learn new skills and specialise in them to beat these foreigners if such a situation arises. This is not a setback at all, this is a blessing", Mrs Reyjak replied reporters at a press conference yesterday.
The 47-year-old Head of State is a strong supporter of diversification and immigrant rights, and is responsible for Yunishinka's economical growth in recent years. Arguably one of the most openly-spoken of the 15 Heads of State, Mrs Reyjak is a highly respected figure in the government.
The influx of permanent residents will likely continue beyond 2017, according to the Ministry of Immigration, along with increased return rate of overseas West-Slavs to the CPSN. Financial Advisor Nikita Kruminschi predicts an increase in iron and steel output, as well as more social and civil workers in the near future. The permanent immigration scene in the CPSN will most likely remain a contended topic, but most seem to favour the current situation, as polls conducted by various government organisations have shown, with over 70% of the population welcoming the immigrants with open arms.
Various radical groups have expressed discontent with immigrants, especially violently radical Erisism followers, who claim that "The immigrants are taking our culture, our land, our jobs and defiling our religion". However, with increased cultural and social awareness, it is believed that these immigrants may help to bring the CPSN's diverse culture back with them if they do choose to leave.
Mrs Reyjak ended her speech powerfully: "These immigrants will help contribute to our society, diversify our culture, increase racial awareness and tolerance, and show the world that the CPSN will not be a ethnically stagnant country!"

SUSa Ultimatum Rejected

Field Marshal Richard Dawkins has issued an official statement formally rejecting the ultimatum issued by Truman Kumbukani of SUSa. Dawkins stated in no uncertain terms that ArKav does not recognise the legitimacy of Kumbukani's government, and will not negotiate with a subversive terrorist faction. The response is not unexpected, since ArKav still controls central Kavo, and their position according to reports issued from Port Arthur is strong. The Field Marshal reassured his supporters and the people of Kavo that there was no need to consider negotiation, arguing that the defeats suffered thus far have been a result of mismanagement by the van der Veld regime.

Military Shakeup Carried Out

Field Marshal Dawkins today oversaw a top down review of the military, with several political appointees and van der Veld supporters being removed from positions of authority, to be replaced by trusted, capable officers. The shakeup sees the replacement of around 60% if ArKav's command staff and logistical support officers, with many already absent from the capital thanks to their allegiance to the ousted President. Special Forces under the control of the Committee and Field Marshal Dawkins have been seen around Port Arthur and other key urban centres entering government buildings and rounding up political appointees and van der Veld supporters. So far some 2,240 people have been arrested on charges of treason or sabotage with many more arrests expected in the coming days.

Kumbukani Optimistic Regarding PRA

The President today made a diplomatic statement expressing his optimism regarding the situation in southern Sheera with the Provisional Republic of the Araabyne. After van der Veld's u-turn decision to seek reconciliation with the black populace the President seems to have lightened his rhetoric and has made plain that in spite of ArKav's refusal to talk the People's Democratic Republic would be prepared to cooperate with and negotiate a settlement on the future with the Provisional Republic provided they concede that the territory they presently hold becomes part of Sheera upon peace. He has also stated that reprisals against van der Veld's forces would not be taken should they agree to support SUSa in defeating ArKav.

Erisism Extremist Bombs Skyva Airport, 11 Wounded
22 January 2017
A bomb went of at Skyva Airport earlier today, injuring 11 people nearby. The man who planted the small bomb in a toilet, identified as a 37-year-old Ereknestokian, was arrested after witnesses saw him fleeing the scene. Placed under one of the sinks in the men's bathroom, the device exploded at around 6:20 a.m. this morning. Airport security was alerted by a man who had heard the bomb go off as he was drinking from the water fountain outside. "There was this loud bang and a few screams, the floor shook a little" he told press. "I went to check what happened then I saw the mess, I instantly knew something had gone very wrong so I went to call for help".
The culprit was sitting on a bench opposite the bathroom, behind a small indoor tree. A few people who were also resting on the bench at the time of the explosion saw the man get up and start walking away briskly after hearing a small rumble. The court trial is ongoing currently and airport security in all areas of the CPSN are cracking down with compulsory bag checks for now as a precautionary measure. Many speculate that the bombing is related to the present immigration situation in the CPSN, which radical Erisim groups have openly expressed their discontent with.

Haag Falls! Dawkins Outraged

News filtered through into the media in Port Arthur this morning that the city of Haag, ArKav's last stronghold in the north of Kavo, has fallen to rebel forces after a 76 day siege. According to the scarce information being made available by ArKav command the city fell after a prolonged artillery bombardment which included the use of white phosphorus; much of the city was subsequently levelled before rebel forces entered the city and took what was left. Beyond this little is known since Field Marshal Dawkin's regime is remaining tight lipped on the subject and has refused to share any more information than this.

Dawkins for his part has expressed outrage at the fall of Haag, stating that had the previous regime shown a speck of initiative they would have relieved the forces there long ago. The fall of Haag is a severe blow to Dawkins and his regime, as the last stronghold of ArKav power in the north it was a symbol of strength, defiance, and resistance in the face of increasing aggression by SUSa forces. Despite the fact that it held little strategic value in the wider context of the conflict its loss is significant and has had a major negative effect on morale.

Sagite Requests International Taskforce Over Kavo

Prime Minister Ulrics has today called for the formation of an international taskforce to intervene in the Fourth Brush War in Kavo. As violence in the developing nation worsens and atrocities become apparent on both sides the government has decided that a position of non-involvement is no longer justifiable. The principles of sovereignty in this case must be outweighed by the ideals of human morality, or so the Prime Minister has said. The humanitarian situation within Kavo, in particular within the central and southern mainland regions where the fighting is fiercest, is rapidly deteriorating; according to the government international aid convoys are no longer able to reach many of the worst affected areas due to attacks by guerrilla fighters and insurgents on road convoys and rail lines. Furthermore the collapse of the Kavoene state and rise of a military junta, which is opposed on one side by Pro-Black Nationalists, and on the other by an ineffectual Pro-Democracy White movement, has further complicated matters and an almost total breakdown of law and order seems to have occurred.

The Prime Minister has officially extended an invitation to the governments of Midrasia, Oserland, Ternca, Den Helder, Newrey, Aquidneck, and the CPSN to meet with him in the capital, Târgoviște, to discuss joint military operations in Kavo so as to bring an end to the violence and force a peace settlement. What Mr Ulrics has thus far proposed is a simple peace keeping force which will move to enforce a ceasefire between the three major factions within Kavo. This force will seek to work with the People's Democratic Republic of Sheera and the Provisional Republic of the Araabyne to bring a halt to offensive military operations; once this is achieved the goal of the force will then be to prevent further violence and force the ArKav leadership to negotiate a peace settlement.

TRADE RESTRICTIONS PARTLY TERMINATED ON ARAABYNE

Nieuwekerke, Den Helder — The Confederate States-General this morning passed a special vote granting the President dispensation to develop a working relationship and expand on trade terms with the Provisional Republic of the Araabyne separately from the country of Kavo. While the passed bill refrained from issuing formal diplomatic recognition for the state, it comes an encouraging step towards the Provisional Republic, who President Vals has gone on the record as calling an "important partner for peace." President Vals later today signed a number of executive orders specially clarifying trade restrictions, originally applied to the Commonwealth of Kavo, to no longer apply to the Provisional Republic. In addition, the President has authorised up to 350$ million in an initial aid package to the Provisional Republic, with details to be negotiated with the government of the Araabyne in the near future.

Many expected the Helderian government to retain their customary silence on the matter of the Commonwealth. Although Council Pensionary Claude-Jonker's government has been openly supportive of the doctrine of liberal interventionism in the past, and signed into law a number of documents restricting trade with the Commonwealth as a result of its subpar human rights record and in relation to the ongoing conflict with SUSA forces (now the Republic of Sheera,) co-operation with any of the factions involved was not on the cards, and seems to have come as a surprise to anyone except insiders, with the opposition scrambling to respond.

PRESIDENT VALS TO VISIT SAGITE ON TALKS

Târgoviște, Sagite — President Johan Vals has announced his intent to travel to Sagite's capital of Târgoviște for a series of talks with world leaders to discuss the deployment of a multinational peacekeeping force to the troubled nation of Kavo. The announcement follows an invitation by the Prime Minister of the Principality of Sagite extended to the governments of several nations to engage in talks with the goal of considering the possibility of a peacekeeping deployment to Kavo, likely consisting of a joint multi-national force. With the termination of trade restrictions to the Provisional Republic of the Araabyne, the government of Den Helder has been quietly ratcheting up support for intervention domestically; a number of statements made by the Council Pensionary, Annemarie Claude-Jonkers, have been perceived as moving towards an States-General vote towards intervention in the state.

Domestically, support for an intervention in Kavo is generally low. Although polling has indicated an upswing in support for intervention after news reports accusing both sides of war crimes in the battle for the city of Haag, over 50% of respondents stated that they "strongly opposed" the idea of unilateral intervention, with only 30% in support. Working with a broad international coalition on the matter may be a manner for the Pensionary to preserve domestic legitimacy and conserve political capital by reducing the relative size of Helderian commitment; President Vals might be expected to negotiate to this end. The opposition has hardened against the matter, with opposition leaders once again calling for an end to Den Helder's policies of liberal interventionism.

War Proceeding 'As Expected' According to Shincliffe Government

The new government in Shincliffe has been tight lipped about its ideology and about its conduct of the war, however today in an interview the President, Marcus van der Veld, stated that he believed that the war was proceeding "...as expected." This seems to confirm that the government held out significant hope of cooperation diplomatically with Sheera, but little hope in direct military terms, as PRA forces continue to retreat southwards on the mainland. During the interview questions were asked over the strategic conduct of the war, however the President refused to give specifics, elaborating only to say that because the majority of the forces which had joined the PRA after the coup were support based there was little that could be done at present to slow ArKav's southward march into PRA held mainland Kavo. He did make clear however that the safety of the islands which make up the Provisional Republic's official territory were safe from attack since ArKav's naval capabilities were "Insignificant, at the very best."

According to the fragmented reports which are filtering into the civilian press in Shincliffe the military situation on the mainland is dire with PRA forces steadily retreating along the entire front. The majority of the forces controlled by the Provisional Republic are either ground based support teams or air force squadrons; however with no frontline fighting force to speak of these units are forced to withdraw whenever a sizeable ArKav force approaches. If the war is going 'as expected' as the President has stated then surely it is expected also that this retreat from the mainland will continue. Meanwhile there has been absolutely no word from the north of the country where Sheera, which has given a verbal promise of support, is fighting ArKav forces within artillery range of Port Arthur.

Slackening of Trade Restrictions Eases Supply Situation

With the easing of economic sanctions by Den Helder against the Provisional Republic the supply situation in Shincliffe has significantly improved with rationing restrictions by the government also easing somewhat in response. The reappearance of trade vessels and supply ships in the Araabyne harbours has bolstered morale among the civilian population and no doubt among the government and military too. While food rationing is easing off the rationing of fuel has not however and key supplies of petroleum and diesel remain punishingly short; in response the government has urged citizens to avail themselves of the limited public transport facilities or more efficient means of travel.

PRA Forces Poised to Retake Gilesgate

The Provisional Republic of the Araabyne "stand poised to recapture Gilesgate" after weeks of intense fighting in Elvet to the south, says a source within the PRA military. Getting confirmed reports from within the isolated and wartorn south of what was once Kavo has been a difficult undertaking for the international media, however recent efforts by Sagitean newspaper Vox! have proved successful with several key PRA commanders agreeing to have their forces joined by embedded journalists.

The resulting reports paint for the first time the shocking picture of the situation in the Former Commonwealth of Kavo with brutal clarity. According to Alan Hindmarch, who is embedded with the forces of 'Commander' Koos van Beyer, the nature of the fighting has been terrible to behold with the predominantly white Araabyner PRA forces backed by local black activists and militias ruthlessly fighting back against ArKav forces in the area. Until last week the PRA and its allies had been on the back foot, retreating south as ArKav forces advanced on them, however now that the local white and black militias have been drawn into service and incorporated into the PRA command structure they have seen a sudden and stunning reversal of fortune.

ArKav forces had pushed as far south as Serburn and Fort Garren with stunning rapidity and brutality; however a determined defence of the PRA's last major sea port on the mainland at Serburn proved to be the turning point. As has been previously reported Mr Dawkins' coup against incumbent president, Marcus van der Veld, caused a huge rift within ArKav and resulted in the Navy and two thirds of the Air Force breaking away from ArKav to help establish the PRA. The result of this split has been that ArKav, while strong on the ground, lacks the key support elements it needs to prosecute a modern war of movement effectively; the knock on effect being that when ArKav forces attempted to take Serburn the PRA was able to hold them back through the extensive use of naval and air support against which ArKav had no answer.

The stalemate at Serburn gave the PRA the time it needed to gather its strength and to find an army. Some international observers have criticised van der Veld and the PRA for recruiting the local militias into their Army, with accusations of legitimising the militia mentality and concerns over what this means in terms of ideology and precedent for the PRA and any new government which forms in the wake of this war. However it cannot be denied that the strategy has proven effective; the already well organised militias were allowed to maintain their own command structures provided they agreed to answer to the higher authority of PRA command and in return gained the resources and political backing needed to prosecute a war effectively.

Developments on the front line and in the PRA's structure notwithstanding the war is still far from over; ArKav remains firmly in control in the centre of the country and the battle for the north which is being fought by SUSa and the PDRS seems to have ground to a halt, reaching a point of grinding attrition. But now at least there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel as PRA forces broke the advanced vanguards of the ArKav southward thrust and have hammered them back north into Gilesgate, which was one of the first cities to fall to ArKav after the PRA's ignominious formation, and are poised to retake the city, according to the commander of the offensive, Koos van Beyer, of the Sier Araabyne Volunteer Militia.

Van Beyer's men fight alongside another white militia, 5th Vrystaat Vrywilligers who were part of the Vrystaat Vrywilligers association of militia groups prior to the war; and the recently formed black militia, Swartbroederskap van Araabyne, who support van der Veld's reconciliation efforts. The ground forces are advancing with the support and oversight of the Navy, which continues offensive operations against Gilesgate and other ArKav targets along the coast. The city has already suffered heavy bombardment from air and naval forces in the days leading up to the attack and according an adjutant in van Beyer's command circle the actual advance into the city proper will begin at some point this afternoon.

National News Summary

Battle for Gilesgate Continues

The brutal fighting in the city of Gilesgate continues into its twelfth day today, with PRA forces now assaulting the Alwadi Financial District in the west of the city proper. Progress in Gilesgate has been slow as ArKav forces staunchly defend their positions forcing the PRA to fight street by street and building by building in a situation not helped by the fact that much of Gilesgate consists of multi-storey structures. However for the first time since the assault began reporters from both national and international news media organisations have been able to enter parts of the city to report on PRA progress.

ArKav forces in Gilesgate are well equipped and well trained, according to PRA spokesmen they are mostly members of the 2nd Battalion, Port Arthur Infantry Division, supported by militias formed from local Araabyner hardliners and police officers, something becoming increasingly common as ArKav's situation continues to deteriorate. According to Major Lewis Ngomo, a black militia leader supporting the PRA, ArKav are throwing everything they have into the defence of Gilesgate at great cost to themselves and the PRA forces. The Major agreed to accompany me throughout the day and provide an overview of the situation within the city and talked extensively about the overall situation.

"At this point the bulk of the resistance we are facing is coming from irregular forces, mostly Araabyner hardliners from the rural areas west of the city, and police officers seconded from Nettlesworth and Potters Bank. There can be no doubt though that ArKav are directly involved. Our initial attack on the city approached from the South into the Hesselig District, it is a dense residential area and one of the oldest parts of the city, and for the first few days our advance was stuck in this district fighting running battles with these militias. However when we finally cracked their strongpoints we found ArKav communications equipment and support staff inside; these irregulars are clearly being advised at the very least by ArKav officers, if not led by them in some cases. Hesselig was tough, with so many houses and winding residential streets it was impossible to know which buildings were occupied by soldiers, which by civilians, and which were abandoned; some of the commanders demanded artillery and naval bombardments at key points but the President had forbade it."

Driving through Hesselig it is easy to understand exactly what Major Ngomo meant; at every crossroads and intersection lie the torn up remnants of ArKav defensive positions; scattered sandbags, rubble piles, jersey-barriers, and tank traps. Bullet casings are everywhere and on some of the wider streets the burnt out wreckage of emplaced anti-air guns can be seen, their barrels levelled for use against ground targets. From a large hole in the wall above one shopfront hung a burnt and torn green and white banner, the flag of Kavo, though the building itself appeared empty; Ngomo told me that it was a major command centre for the irregulars in the district until they captured it on the 9th. When I asked why the flag still hung there and had not been torn down he explained that there was a great deal of respect for the fighting skill and bravery of the men who held that position; most were rural men and women who felt that they were defending their country from invasion and insurrection. It seemed somehow cruel to tear down that flag after so many of their neighbours and countrymen had bled and died over it.

Mercifully though Hesselig now lies firmly under PRA control and the civilian population is being relocated into a purpose built temporary housing camp outside the city. I asked the Major what he thought of the process, but he declined to comment, "The camps are comfortable enough, they are the same as the ones that we soldiers are expected to live in" he explained, but refused to say anything more about it, stating that providing too many details could make the camps targets for ArKav artillery and terror attacks. "Hesselig is under our control, it is our foothold in the city, and we hope, the hardest part of the city to capture." I could tell that Ngomo had mixed feelings about the prospect of continued fighting, and could sympathise, after all on the one hand there was the desire to retake the city for his cause, and on the other the prospect of yet more death.

According to the reports being made available to reporters by the PRA commanders in and around Gilesgate some 4000 ArKav troops remain in Gilesgate with anywhere between one and two thousand irregulars. With Hesselig captured the push has moved on into Alwadi, the principle financial district in the city which was home to several corporate and banking offices prior to the war; the civilian populace of this area is relatively small and the use of air and artillery strike has been authorised. The biggest change in the coming wave of attacks though will be the presence of prominent PDRS General, Arna Nguela, who has been sent by Kumbukane to help the PRA forces in their capture of the city. Nguela has publicly begun to question Kumbukane's methods and voiced support for van der Veld's proposed process of reconciliation.

Nguela 'Defects' to PRA

Yesterday, just twelve hours after arriving in Gilesgate to assume an advisory role over the PRA forces fighting for the city, Arna Nguela, a leading member of SUSa and key military leader within the PDRS, 'defected' to the PRA in a stunning and highly unusual move. Nguela, who had previously made clear her increasing concern over Truman Kumbukane's methods and leadership of the PDRS, and he deep regret over carrying out his orders to annihilate Haag, was supposed to be representing PDRS interests in the PRA. This defection is made all the stranger by the fact that the PDRS and PRA have an informal alliance to defeat ArKav. According to sources within the PRA military command at Gilesgate Nguela walked into a PRA officer's barracks at around 5 o'clock and formally defected; she is now apparently being held for her own safety somewhere south of the city pending transfer to Shincliffe where she will speak with President van der Veld.

Nguela came to prominence on a national level when she led a significant force of SUSa soldiers south into Lanchester, but did not gain international attention until the Siege of Haag when, on orders from SUSa leader Truman Kumbukane, she used white phosphorous and indiscriminate artillery barrages to essentially level the entire city and its remaining defenders. What caused her to rise to fame in a true sense however was how, only hours after carrying out Kumbukane's orders, she publicly decried the order and her decision to carry it out; from that point on she became a key counterweight to Kumbukane's control in SUSa and the PDRS and became increasingly vocal in her concerns regarding his ideology and methods.

This defection is a major symbolic blow to the PDRS, with Nguela a popular figure within the faction to whom her soldiers apparently remain loyal. Not only that but it is a significant military and strategic blow as Nguela was widely considered to be the PDRS' best military commander and strategist as well as its highest ranking military officer under Kumbukane. Already there have been calls from Lanchester, which the PDRS call Umbwezi, for Nguela's immediate extradition pending charges of treason, however President van der Veld has so far refused to respond. This situation could open a rift between the PDRS and PRA and break their shaky alliance, further muddying the waters in an already chaotic situation.

Alwadi District Captured in Latest PRA Advance

After fourteen days of fighting for the city itself, and two in the Alwadi District the PRA have announced that the district is secure; this leaves the industrial and commercial districts surrounding Giles' Port, and the northern residential district. The PRA ground forces as of the 14th held only the southern Hesselig district, having spent just under two weeks fighting an intense campaign against the irregular and guerrilla forces being used there by ArKav. However with the Hesselig District firmly under their control PRA forces have been able to successfully and rapidly move into the Alwadi District which was comparatively only lightly defended. With most of the buildings in Alwadi being high rise offices and banking centres the fighting was complex and fierce, but thanks to the PRA's significant air capability, which ArKav lacks, they have been able to make swift progress.

The fighting for Alwadi started on the evening of the 14th with convoys of PRA troops entering the area in hastily armoured vehicles, with the support of two units of tanks. Once the infantry had mobilised and engaged the ArKav forces on the ground a massive aerial advance was made with helicopters landing troops onto rooftops at key locations. The top to bottom pincer approach seems to have worked exceptionally well with each building falling one after the other as PRA forces press them from two sides at once; apparently ArKav had not been prepared for the possibility of troops being landed so successfully over their heads, which is an uncharacteristic oversight on the part of a usually highly competent and professional military force.

According to Major Ngomo, who has become to strike force's unofficial spokesman, large numbers of ArKav soldiers and irregulars have been taken prisoner after they were forced to surrender. "Our strategy has been incredibly successful and the ArKav troops have found it very difficult indeed to defend from troops advancing from the ground floor and the roof simultaneously. The result is that they are forced back onto a single floor, sandwiched between our soldiers; with nowhere to go there is little they could do but surrender after we threatened to drop grenades on them through the ceilings."

A major highlight of the activity in Alwadi has been the destruction of the Weatherby Savings and Loan headquarters building, and large high rise office building which managed to hold of the aerial landings thanks to three anti-aircraft guns deployed on its roof. After three hours of trying to break into the building from the ground PRA forces called in an air strike by a trio of fighter jets which launched missiles into the structure causing it to collapse entirely with massive casualties for the defenders. The building's destruction became a deafening centrepiece for the conflict as a whole in this district.

National News Summary

PDRS-PRA Alliance Breaks Down

The tenuous alliance between the People's Democratic Republic of Sheera in the north, and the Provisional Republic of the Araabyne in the south seems to have completely broken down today after a series of vitriolic speeches given by PDRS President, Dr Truman Kumbukane, condemned the PRA's actions in harbouring the former second in command of SUSa, Arna Nguela. In a speech broadcast live over the radio throughout the PDRS held north Kumbukane proclaimed Nguela a traitor, and that those who protected her were traitors by association and went on to officially declare war on the PRA. Meanwhile PRA government officials in Shincliffe have decried Kumbukane's speechmaking as 'Deeply unprofessional, and profoundly concerning.' One, who prefers to remain anonymous told our reporters: "The first we heard of this declaration of war came over the radio when Kumbukane gave his speech. No effort to reach a diplomatic solution was attempted... his action seem entirely unilateral and without consideration."

This declaration of war signals the end of the tenuous relationship between the PDRS and PRA and divides the two key factions fighting to end apartheid in Kavo. However PRA officials seem more relieved than concerned at the end of this alliance, largely because of the dubious nature of the PDRS leadership whose methods of war in the north are becoming increasingly brutal. It is now evident that the PRA wants to distance itself further from the PDRS who have been waging a 'barbaric' war of chemicals and toxins, with a particular emphasis on the use of incendiaries such as white phosphorous. What's more the PRA have responded to the PDRS declaration with comparative restraint, publishing intelligence reports and documents, some of which came from Nguela herself, which seem to provide proof of SUSa and PDRS atrocities against both civilian and military targets in the north and in Aramatheria.

Publicly the President and Nguela seem to be resolute, and if this breakdown in relations has shaken their confidence they have not shown it. In a joint press conference held shortly after Kumbukane's radio broadcast PRA President, Marcus van der Veld set out his reasoning for sacrificing the PRA alliance with the PDRS for the sake of Nguela; "Over the past few months, since the fall of Haag, it has been clear that SUSa and the PDRS are no longer following their original mission of creating a legitimate and free majority ruled state in Kavo. After the coup in Port Arthur which saw the collapse of the Commonwealth it was hoped by myself and by those advising me that they would temper their aggression with compassion and common sense, and in keeping with this hope we formed our alliance. However the succeeding months of this conflict have proven them to be increasingly brutal and wayward in their methods, and indeed unstatesmanlike in their conduct; in order to preserve the PRA's moral authority, and its ability to achieve the goal of reconciliation between the races it became necessary to terminate our relationship with the PDRS. This matter with Nguela is simply the catalyst for that."

For her part Arna Nguela seemed intent on explaining her decision and her position; "When I joined SUSa it was with the belief that it stood for the acquisition of equal rights; I understood of course that the use of military force would be necessary in achieving this end and I made my peace with that fact, however the use of military force is one thing, the wanton use of barbaric tools of war quite another. I was not able to sway Kumbukane and his supporters from their path, nor temper their desire to cause slaughter at every turn; achieving the dream of equal rights at the expense of our morality, of our souls, that is not a fair trade. I knew that I could not live in a society, no matter how free, that had been paid for with the wilful suffering of so many people."

"As the conflict escalated I came to find out more and more about President van der Veld, and having spent the weekend in deep conversation with him I fully believe that his realisation that apartheid must end is genuine. He has spoken only of his desire for peace between the people and races of Kavo, and an end to the bloodshed which divides our country and our peoples. I cannot say that I agree entirely with his views, but I can say that his morality is entirely compatible with my own. This is why I have chosen to join the PRA and flee the north, to preserve the dream of an equal and moral society. I only regret that this comes at the cost of an escalation in the war and an end to prospect of a peaceful resolution between the PDRS and PRA."

With the division of the PDRS and PRA the war seems larger than it was, initial concerns that the black militias and troops working with the PRA would abandon them in favour of the PDRS have, thankfully for Shincliffe, proven to have been unfounded. Only a few small isolated pockets of trouble have arisen, where PDRS and SUSa soldiers refused to accept orders; however according to the PRA military these forces have now been pushed north into ArKav held territory. On the ground the change seems to have made little difference; the PDRS lacks the air and naval capabilities required to strike directly at PRA territory, and with the conflict between the PDRS and ArKav ongoing it seems unlikely that PDRS forces will be brought to bear against the PRA until ArKav are vanquished. By contrast the PRA seems fully equipped to prosecute a long distance, long term war; with the announcement today that Sagite and tir Lhaeraidd have signed a mutual agreement to provide the PRA with arms and munitions on the strict proviso that majority elections be held within one year of reunification.

Sagite and tir Lhaeraidd Sign Agreement with PRA

A summit meeting was concluded amidst the furore of the PDRS-PRA split today which secured a steady supply of arms, munitions, and humanitarian goods for the PRA government in the south of Kavo. This comes only days after the talks with the PDRS on a similar topic in Lanchester broke down after SUSa and the PDRS leadership refused to meet the terms deemed necessary by the two Asuran powers. The treaty which was signed independently of the Targoviste Summit, which seems to have ground to a halt, brings and end to the embargo on trade between Sagite and the PRA and promises the extension of supply lines of Lhaeraidh manufactured weapons to the PRA. The treaty is significant not only in that it shows a clear position by the Sagitean and Lhaeraidh governments, but also in the fact that it imposes very strict terms governing the outcome should the PRA win the war.

The most important term of the treaty is that the PRA will hold national government elections within one year of reunification, which must feature an open democratic franchise allowing all persons over the age of eighteen to run for office and vote, regardless of race. In addition a constitutional convention must begin within that first year which sets out a clear and democratic system of government, which protects the basic human rights of the future country's citizens. While these were the two key terms of the agreement there were a number of others which also sparked comment, namely that the PRA is forbidden from the use of incendiary weapons except for defoliation, and they are forbidden from the use of nuclear, chemical, and biological arms. The PRA leadership maintains that it possesses no such weapons with the exception of Napalm, however despite this claim has agreed to sign the treaty and has accepted this point. Another critical point is that the PRA have now officially agreed not to use persons under the age of sixteen for any military or law enforcement purposes; again PRA officials deny that they have knowingly employed children in a military context, but have agreed to the term regardless.

This treaty is the clearest sign yet that the PRA are winning the battle of international diplomacy and politics; this treaty clearly shows that both Sagite and tir Lhaeraidd recognise the PRA as a legitimate force within Kavo, something the PDRS lacks. Indeed only the PRA of the three major factions active in Kavo, seems to have any formal international recognition at all, though the PDRS does boast some international support, particularly from Den Helder. Needless to say the media within the PRA and the pro-PRA media elsewhere in Kavo have made much of these developments, and material benefits aside the treaty has provided an enormous boost in morale and confidence, particularly on the front lines where the advance continues to be held up by the battle for Gilesgate. Once the shipments of arms and humanitarian aid start to filter into the country the PRA will have what it needs in order to extend the war beyond the conflict in the south; a large part of the PRA's logistical structure is engaged in providing aid and supplies for refugees and civilians, a fact which is significantly impacting on their military efficacy - the fresh flow of Sagitean and Lhaeraidh aid workers and agencies into the PRA held territories should relieve some of the pressure.

Conflict in Gilesgate Escalates
Southern Docklands Captured

The fighting in Gilesgate has escalated today as PRA commanders continue their assault with renewed vigour. The breaking of the alliance between the PDRS and PRA has if anything only spurred the PRA effort on, so that the fighting can be concluded and military assets diverted elsewhere. This fresh spirit of renewal seems to have extended down into the ranks as well, evidenced by the bold and decisive advance of PRA troops into the Southern Docklands District, under the covering fire of the naval gunboats deployed offshore. Their advance, which began on the 17th continued throughout the weekend and came to an end in the early hours of this morning when the final ArKav stronghold in the district was stormed and captured, prompting the remaining ArKav forces in the district to retreat.

The Southern Docklands are a key strategic area within Gilesgate, providing much needed access to the sea both for military and merchant vessels. Most of the large warehouses which dominate the district lie in tangle ruins thanks to the naval bombardments which defined the PRA advance into the district, and battered cargo containers lay in disarray, flung about by the concussive force of the large calibre naval guns. With the Docklands now under PRA control their naval forces are able to transport additional troops into the city directly; not only this but they now have the additional material they need to fortify already held areas in the form of heavy industrial vehicles and cargo containers which the PRA are beginning to use to form barricades and temporary command and observation posts.

National News Summary

PRA Begins Process of Nation Building

In a joint press conference President van der Veld and black community leader Arna Nguela announced that the Provisional Government was formally beginning the process of building a new nation. During the press conference both the President and Nguela spoke at length regarding the process and explained how it would take place and why the decision had been made. This signifies the Provisional Government’s first effort in trying to establish the future of their country beyond the context of the Fourth Brush War, and sends a clear message that the PRA intends to play a leading role in the formation of the new state.

The early stages of the announcement dealt with the basic tasks which needed to be undertaken such as a constitutional convention and a decision on where the government would be based. Three key political factions are to be recognised within the convention, the White Araabyne community, Black Araabyne community, and the Provisional Government. The white and black communities will each share an equal number of delegates while the Provisional Government were chair the convention and hold four delegates, half of which must be black. The structure of the convention alone represents a major step forward in PRA racial integration policy and lends credence to their claims that they hope to reconcile the white and black communities.

Delegates have yet to be chosen for the new constitutional convention, however the process by which they will be selected is already underway. The citizens of the Araabyne shall be divided into 120 groups by lot (60 black and 60 white) the members of these groups shall then be allowed to announce their candidacy for the delegacy and elections will be held. Each group will elect its own delegate from among the candidates who have stepped forward in a process which will conclude at the beginning of May.

The second part of the announcement detailed why the decision had been made and van der Veld provided an excellent summary of the reasons; ”Our nation now bleeds from three wounds; we have three factions fighting for control with their only thought seeming to be the destruction of one another. The PRA has existed thus far only to offer an alternative to the bloody violence of the other two factions, however this is insufficient in the long term for when we defeat the other factions then we will be nothing but the alternative to something which is dead and buried. We must forge our own identity and our own future; we must have a clear goal and mandate which extends beyond the vague missions statements of reconciliation and peace.”
Nguela concluded by saying; ”It is all well and good to talk of fighting for peace, reconciliation, and just, but to do so with no thought of how these things are to be achieved is almost as bad as fighting against them. If we are to retain a moral high ground and a sense of purpose we must know exactly what we are fighting to accomplish, and if we have a constitution, a government, and laws in place already when our victory comes then we will have already won half of the second battle which comes after the bloodshed. This is a process of preparedness, and a statement to the world that we are true to our stated intent.”

MIDRASIA SEE OFF RIVALS FRESTOVENIA IN FRIENDLY

Image
David Hevré celebrates after scoring the opening goal of the game.

Lotrič, Midrasia - The Midrasian national football team saw off the Frestovenian team in their friendly match in preparation for the upcoming Copa d'Aeia. The Midrasian team beat their rivals by 2 goals to 1, with David Hevré and Mattieu Subroux both scoring. Manager Klaes Van Emerick chose to field a team of mostly youngsters against the Frestovenian side, not exactly renowned for their footballing pedigree. Despite their limited international appearances, the Frestovenian side still performed well, managing to slot one into the Midrasian net within the 57th minute to make it 1-1.

The match began with Midrasian pressure on the Frestovenians from the outset. Hevré had two chances within the first 20 minutes, both of which went wide. It wasn't until the 32nd minute that striker Hevré was through on goal, beating the Frestovenian offside trap to make it 1-0 to the home team. For the remainder of the first half, the Midrasian's held most of the possession, before half time was called at 1-0. The Frestovenian side came out strong in the second half, winning a free kick in the 56th minute, with their number 9 managing to score from a poor clearance by Nicolas Olivier. Despite this setback, the Midrasians kept up the pressure, with Subroux managing to head the ball in from a corner in the 66th minute. Possession from the remainder of the second half went back-and-forth with neither side managing to break through before the referee blew the whistle for full time.

Manager Van Emerick praised the team for a strong performance, especially considering the lack of international experience by many of the players on the field. Despite this, the match saw some returning figures, like Captain Henri Sabon, who was subbed on in the 70th minute. Sabon, who has suggested that this years' Copa will be his last hopes that this year could be Midrasia's year. Speaking to the Royal Standard before the match, Sabon had this to say: "Our performance last year was strong, but we must do more. We have one of the strongest teams on the international stage, some great upcoming talent and a long footballing history. Anything is possible." Victory against the side from Frestovenia only emboldened Sabon, who suggested that the up and coming talent showed that the Midrasian team have a "bright future ahead of them." Midrasia will next play Tyronova in their next friendly. The team from Rennekka recently saw off opponents the CPSN by 2 goals to 0. Manager Van Emerick suggest the team should not underestimate Tyronova, suggesting he will be playing a team with a mixture of new talent and members of the first XI. Stay tune to the Royal Standard Sport section for updates on the Midrasian team's progress.

National News Summary

Sagitean Team Draws Against Wustenland, Beats Cheonsam

Sagitean football fans had a rough few days after the national squad failed to see off opponents Wustenland last week; however have had cause to celebrate after a friendly match with Cheonsam ended in victory placing Sagite second in their group. The nation's sports fans celebrated wildly after the victory, which is Sagite's first international win since the team was established in 2014. Football has never been a major sport in our small island country, with the lack of space for football pitches being a probable reason for this, however it seems likely that the SFA will see a boost both in revenues and interest after this result and if the team can secure the top spot, or at least move on from the group stages then additional government funding may be allocated.

Sports facilities in Sagite are generally compact, focusing on track and field events rather than team sports such as football or baseball. With so much of Sagite covered in the modern urban sprawl of the Targoviste Metropolitan Area and the rest given over to intensive agriculture there is little room for the large stadia needed to host multiple teams, the result being that Sagite has only three professional football stadia which also double as stadia for other field events. One of these Stadia is in fact shared by three teams, including the national team. That our small island can produce a team capable of facing of teams from much larger countries with superior facilities is indeed a point of pride, with many now claiming that the Sagitean affinity for achieving more with less can be extended to the realm of sport.

PRA Advance in Gilesgate Stalls

The PRA advance in Gilesgate has stalled over the course of the weekend as ArKav has managed to pour another two thousand soldiers into the city in an episode being described as one of the biggest lapses in military intelligence of the war so far. The PRA commander in Gilesgate, General van Beyer, has come under fire both from the Provisional Government and from the local media for allowing the reinforcement of the remaining districts of Gilesgate to occur without any resistance. Though the increase in numbers has not yet resulted in ArKav forces turning the tide against the PRA advance it has placed a major roadblock in the way of the planned assault on the remaining ArKav held districts in the city which has now been halted in its tracks.

According to reports coming from within Gilesgate, and from our journalists who have managed to cross the front lines to the west of the city, a huge convoy of largely unarmoured vehicles managed to successfully transport the ArKav reinforcements into Gilesgate's northern districts throughout the day on Sunday, this in spite of the PRA's almost total control of the skies in the area. A source inside the reconnaissance force which has been monitoring the area alleges that thanks to limited air reconnaissance they were unable to cover the approach by which the convoy entered the city. This gap in the PRA's reconnaissance net was first created on Friday night when ArKav mechanised infantry spotted and attacked a forward reconnaissance team consisting of three squads in Lhaeraidh made Met Fabrikan Syrfelwyr LMVs forcing them to abort their reconnaissance sweep and retreat.

The anonymous source also stated that a simple airstrike on the convoy could have "...completely wiped it out; it presented a target rich environment and those targets would have gone up like a light." Analysis of surveillance satellite photographs provided by the Lhaeraidh news agency, Llais which obtained them from the Lhaeraidh Geographic Survey Commission, shows that this statement is, if anything an understatement. The convoy shows up clearly, taking up every lane of the main motorway for several miles back and military air power expert, retired Sagitean air force officer Flight Commander Victor Osprey, said the following when shown the pictures:

"Judging from the images alone this looks to me like a classic example of area saturation; the straight nature of this road makes this situation akin to the aerial equivalent of shooting fish in a barrel. A flight of attack helicopters could have wreaked untold havoc here with little risk to themselves and a flyover with jets would likely have even more success. Had the PRA known about this in advance, which by rights any force which has air superiority as they do should, they would have been able to neutralise these reinforcements before ever they reached the city, and disabled the motorway too."

Van der Veld Approves Airstrikes on Gilesgate

After an media uproar over Provisional Armed Forces' failure to prevent the reinforcement of Gilesgate by some two thousand ArKav soldiers over the weekend the President has bowed to mounting pressure both from the media, and from politicians within the Provisional Government, and has officially lifted the restrictions on airstrikes over the city. This move officially ends the policy by which much of the city has been spared mass devastation, a policy which limited but did not altogether disallow the use of airstrikes on the city. Up to now the Provisional Armed Forces have had to receive the authorisation of a senior officer with a rank of Colonel or higher in order to call in even minor airstrikes, and then only if the situation met a series of strict criteria; now however the criteria have been dropped and replace with an 'at your discretion' caveat while any office ranked Captain or above can approve the use of an airstrike.

The controversial policy was put in place by the President in view of significant concerns for the safety and wellbeing of those civilians still remaining within the city, and was first enacted during the earliest stages of the battle when PRA forces were still struggling their way into the densely populated southern residential district; now that this district has fallen and much of the fighting is centred around industrial and commerce centres where the civilian population is far sparser opponents of the policy claim that it is redundant. General van Beyer has successfully used air power at numerous points throughout the ongoing battle for Gilesgate, however this has largely being restricted to precision strikes by helicopter gunships in close coordination with ground forces, with troop insertion by helicopter also being unrestricted. With the restriction on the use of airstrikes lifted it would seem likely that van Beyer will now make use of the new boon at his disposal.

However not everyone has openly encouraged the increase in the use of devastating ordnance; Arna Nguela, who has been appointed to head the PRA's integration efforts, and who advises the armed forces on guerrilla and unconventional warfare strategy, has publicly urged officers in Gilesgate to exercise restraint; "Though this restriction is lifted, which undoubtedly releases a great deal of pressure on the ground forces engaged in the city, it is vital that we not now overuse what is at our disposal. Air power is a valuable tool and a deadly asset, but one must also consider the drawbacks. When using missiles and bombs it is impossible to control who does and does not get hurt; these weapons are deadly and civilians are hiding everywhere they can find shelter. By all means the military should be allowed to use all means at its disposal, but likewise it must decide whether their use is a necessity lest they become butchers. No city is worth the slaughter of its populace."
