The reason communism doesn't work is because it provides no bonus for working hard.
The original colonies (plymouth for example) lived in what would today be called a "Socialist Utopia" where they all worked and put their food into a pile and everyone shared it equally. The problem with this system is clear. Because there was no incentive for working hard, no one worked. "Why should I work if I get food regardless?" They said, and they did. Hundreds starved and many died, until they realized they where doing it wrong. Someone (Whom i forgot the name to) decided it would be best to instead give the colonists land rights so they can make their own farms and work for themselves, and because of this they had an abundance of food to the point that the richest and most wealthy settlers would start giving out extra food to the poorer and more needy settlers.

An event in Jamestown happened almost exactly like this, too. They all shared a food stockpile and worked to feed everyone else, and no one worked and everyone starved. Until John Smith came around and changed that. He gave land to some people and they worked and had an abundance of food which they gave to everyone who didn't. They did all these things out of free will.
