If you select your bytecoins there's an option to buy a miner. Apart from that I don't think you're doing anything "wrong."

I bought a miner but it didn't make me mine any faster. And the price of a miner has doubled.

That's weird. Everyone's byte coins seem to be disappearing. What are they spending it on?
