What if we can communicate with them, but we haven't figured out how? We shouldn't kill them because we don't know enough. I believe they are sentient, feeling living beings. They deserve rights equal to any human.

If they have free will, yes.

I read a book where there are two kinds of Zombies: the Reasoning Dead and the Lost. The Lost have lost their minds to the disease and thus seek only to feed their hunger and the Reasoning Dead have control of their mind and survive on livestock. They keep the Lost in check so that they don't spill over into the free world. The term Lost might be incorrect but its something like that and I think its GENIUS.

So free will and a healthy, nonviolent way to satisfy your hunger are prerequisites in my eyes.

I mean, if they don't bite you, then yes, they deserve all basic rights. If they can still bite, they don't deserve a lot of rights, but they should at least have the right to have a life.
