Actually larger regions can survive if they close their borders, have every active nation go for the 'cure' option, and have a reasonable proportion of their nations active with cure missiles: Take a look at International Democratic Union, Forest, or Texas, for three examples...

Our borders are password-protected. We had a large number of nations researching. I spammed cure missiles every 20 seconds for 2 hours right before I went to bed last night, and woke up to find my whole region had turned.

I'd have participated, but I was playing Civ5 when the apocalypse began and only found out this afternoon.
Oh well. When's it over, tomorrow at noon?
Hopefully I can participate next year.

Agreed on the infection rates, as well as the fact that one horde nation attacking you renders you incapable of retaliation. Whatever, sleep is preferable regardless.

It's a once a year, day long thing that does absolutely nothing to any of your stats and doesn't get in the way of your "regular" NS options in any way, so I genuinely don't get why some people are griping about it being a thing.
