I had fun, a lot of it, but so so many people had no fun at all because there was so few zombies out there to infect and horde. Avakael, was listed as a Pro ZOmbie person, yet had not one single attack from anyone. How boring to him. And his experience was not alone. Thousands of people had no change what so ever, no challenge, and most importantly, no fun.
Next year, lets dare to step outside the box for a couple days and make it an apocalypse to remember.

Yup, it is boring, and I want to opt out of the Halloween zombie thing.
But you have a point about making it interesting.
Here's how.
1. Let people that don't want to play opt out.
2. Make the casualties real.
That way, I can not be involved with cure missiles and stuff - and people who do want to take time and go zombie or fight zombie have some real risk and reward.
If a region decides that it's going to annihilate (decimates is reducing it to just ten percent if you pay attention to latin) their population - good for them! If someone in a large region decides to not exclude themselves and fight - then it's up to them to stop the annihilation.

Or interregional zombie bleed. Regions bleed zombies into regions nearest to them in the update or something.

I just logged in around 10 minutes into Z day and began researching Cure Missiles while most of my puppets were set on military mode.
Then I used four browsers and fired the Cure Missiles away (a Trinity of my main nation Infected Mushroom, -Tyrion Lannister-, -Littlefinger-, and -Lord Varys-/-Margaery Tyrell-).
Within a few hours the zombie crisis in my region was defused. The Westerosi Lords prevailed over the White Walkers.
I don't know... I had lots of fun, it was over really fast but I had fun.

what's the reward though?
if you're going to lose population for real, there should be something lasting to gain too?

This would be a terrible idea since it would inevitably be exploited in the r/d game after the event.
