How about a huge Asteroid on collision path with earth?
Nations could either contribute to an international project to blow up the asteroid or they could build underground cities to protect their people... or, maybe they could just throw a huge party because there is no tomorrow...

Wouldn't an asteroid affect the underground city? The impact. Overall, that'll be pretty good.

Well... it wouldn't be that big... It would be big enough to kill everyone on the surface but it would lave underground cities intact...

I think there should be a constant thing about economic, disease, and other things which would effect politics. Imagine a long term zombie thing in which, instead of zombies, there are graphs on regional economics and what not.
