Curfew Enforced as Military Arrives
Paul Robjohns
Political Editor

GIROUX, Stretta
Following the outbreak of a mysterious illness in the capital city (among other areas of the nation), the origins of which are currently unknown, the Strettan Army has been deployed to city areas in order to contain the spread of the disease.

A strict curfew has been enacted in the capital following the outbreak, with food aid being distributed to those most in need. Citizens have been advised to display a red flag or similar in their window if they require military assistance, and to remain inside their homes at all times. Following the outbreak earlier this year of a similar disease, the military has prepared new strategies, although the effectiveness of these following the military-wide restructuring plan is being questioned.

A large number of lorries have been commandeered to transport shipping containers from docks to inner-city areas in an attempt to capture those infected. ADC Justin Keller states "this is only a precaution, and is what we feel to be the most effective and non-aggressive manner of dealing with the current situation".

The disease, which is unidentified at time of writing, has parallels to the disease discovered earlier this year - which at the time was coined 'Cannibal Syndrome'. The cause of this earlier outbreak still isn't known, yet a cure was eventually found. Scientists have been unsuccessful in their application of this previous cure to this new case, and are now working on an alternative.

The office of First Minister Maxwell Goodstone has released a statement, and Goodstone is expected to address the nation tomorrow morning. The statement released urges the Strettan people to remain calm. It also briefly addresses the news slowly filtering in from other nations that similar traits have been found in their people.

We will endeavour to keep you up to date on the situation as it develops.

Prior to confirmation of the crisis: viewtopic.php?p=17170529#p17170529

Now:

Princess Martina Smertolinsky leaned back in her chair, her arms behind her head, reviewing the several computer screens in front of her. She wore black BDUs over a white hooded sweatshirt, her short blond hair and eyepatch standing out among the personnel in the underground room. She was at the desk designated for her in her Situation Command Center, deep below the New Serene Palace, below the first level of catacombs.

Around her, advisers and technicians sat before multiple computer screens, in communication with the various military units, intelligence and communication centers, and government offices, all on lockdown and barricaded. Various personnel were clad in black civil service office uniforms, black or olive fatigues, or Smertolina's green-on-green tiger-stripe infantry combat uniforms.

"Confirmation!" Somebody said. "Confirmation of z-virus infection!"

Martina leaned forward.

"Confirmation of zombies at East checkpoint 3, Ma'am!" Another controller announced. "Definitely z-virus, border guards under attack."

"Okay," Martina said, "Authorize fire at will, but hold positions. Get the readied teams to subdue and transportthe some infected for study to the Ministry of Health at Smertolina City."

"Kriegrenadiers at Hrad Krevniy say they're already on it, 2 Hinds with subjects for study en route."

The other techs continued announcing areas with infected outbreaks, seemingly everywhere with terrifying swiftness.

Martina used her mouse to activate the connection to public announcement capability, adjusted her headset, and looked over at another tech, who confirmed it was live.

"People of Smertolina," her voice rang out from the public PA speakers placed throughout the nation's population centers, and over all radio and television channels, "This is Princess Martina. We have confirmation of a z-virus outbreak, and groups of infected attacking people. We have the situation under control. Remain in your homes. Do not let anyone in, even loved ones, for they may be infected. Those of you who are armed, defend your posts but do not venture out into unsecured areas. Keep light and noise to a minimum. The Ministry of Health is already working on treatment for the plague, and we are in communication and cooperation with allied nations. Be strong. You are Smertolinan, and we can overcome anything, if we remain resolute. May God be with us all."

Martina ended the connection. "How are other nations doing?" She asked.

"According to radio and internet chatter, a coalition of medical groups who have isolated the virus are calling it 'Atlas-112'" said Baroness Eva Krevnivdova, the Minister of Information and Security. A girl with a black ponytail and reading glasses, she wore the black shirt, necktie, jacket and skirt of the civil service, with no insignias. "A lot of our neighbors spiked fast, but are responding. Medical ministries are already comparing notes with ours."

"All right," Martina said. "Let's keep an eye on things."
Smertolina is a landlocked, mountainous, forested, Slavic-Germanic nation in Astyria. It is ruled by a mostly-benevolent fascist monarch (my old "City of Villains" supervillain) and does not represent my real-world views.
Feia represents my real-world views and how I would run a nation, modified by issue results and interaction with other nations.
Austrog and Novella Romagna are puppets created to fill gaps in Astyria's history and geography.
Erufaelor is a FanT/FT elven nation.

Charden Healgakee hadn't been too serious with his ex-girlfriend, but that didn't mean the breakup didn't come as a disappointment. "Look," she'd said, blushing, the previous week, "this isn't going anywhere."

"I don't mind taking it slowly," he protested. "Unless you'd rather not, of course."

"No, I mean, we're not--"

We're not togther. We're not equals. Even years after the monarchy had been dissolved, people still loved his name more than they ever loved him. No, it wasn't even his name, his father's surname certainly wasn't royal. Not even his mother had been born with a noble family name. And yet, nevertheless, there he was. Heir to a long-dead throne. Honored by fringe crazies and, unceremoniously, broken up with by his girlfriend. Some honor that was.

Unfortunately for Charden, his problems were put into an unfortunate perspective the next week, when the virus began to spread. Suddenly, people were stumbling around, sneezing, biting, and generally making a scene. Eanbyre was under the weather, Munnerput and Bloyben even worse, and Attereg...well, Attereg could probably batten down the hatches and avoid anything that happened in the rest of the country. That was Attereg for you.

Some people blamed the rest of the region; a few feared it was another experiment at Nithgard TU gone horribly wrong. While nobody human could be reached in Nithgard for commentary, Charden was inclined to believe it was just one of those things that happened. Hadn't Easter been a bit...too much with the resurrection? It would pass.

"But what if it doesn't?" asked Tenta, Charden's younger brother.

"Then we run."

"Where? The rest of the world's just as bad."

"Find one of those cure missles, then, follow it."

"Earent with a military? You've lost it."

Charden shrugged. "Yeah, okay, what's the traditional Earadal approach? Be lazy and wait it out. It'll pass."

"And if not?"

"Wait for the great Pernt Trumebeld of old to rise up and save us."

"I'm not sure anyone's actually getting resurrected."

Charden sighed. "Okay. I think I know what the Earadal tradition is."

"Yeah?"

"We wait for the government to collapse. Mom takes over as Pernt. I become heir to the throne."

"Oh, no," said Tenta, suddenly grasping the point.

"And then, we try to make peace with the rising tide of our infected superiors..."

"Of course..."

"By marrying into the family line."

SMH seeks SFZ

Single male heir seeks single female zombie for marriage, courtly bonds, potential offspring (can zombies reproduce?). Heir to currently-vacant throne of small lowland country, will consider reclaiming with aid of undead might. Hobbies include long walks on nigh-underwater beaches, watching football, and sleeping. Independent experts assure me my brains are both succulent and nourishing, but I prefer not to share that intimacy with any partners until marriage. Member of the Church of Earent, but you need not be; I respect your cultural traditions and ask you to honor mine. Non-smoker seeks same. Serious inquiries only.

For our mutual peace and prosperity!

I can't take credit for all the ideas here--some of them are other people's but they've let me run with them.

No one knew where it started from. Was it something in the water? Did a tourist from abroad bring the plague with them? Was it some ideologue gone mad and unleashed a bio-terroristic nightmare? Was it the hand of the gods wiping clean the earth? There had been warning signs - an uptick in bizarre fevers, the inexplicable instances of biting; rumblings of horrific and gruesome scenes in the rural townships and dark crevices of the inner cities. Even before the declaration of an outbreak, it was alarming. But only when the constellation of maladies began to take shape was the full scope of the disaster understood.

Quetzalcoatl Nochtli, the Huey Tlatoani of the Aztec National League, sat back against a wall of cool concrete. There was nothing he could do, nothing he can do about stopping the calamity that occurred under his watch. The emergency declaration, the closing down of non-essential functions, the evacuations, everything seemed like it was for not. The one bright spot - the effort to find a cure was rapidly dimming. Sure, Operation "Cure Missile" possibly cured billions of people across the region, but even then, the cure seemed only temporary. Even as billions of people were cured, it seemed as if billions more were infected or re-infected.

These thoughts were replaced by an even more troubling thought - what about his wife and kids. He thought back to the last night he spent with his wife - even then, the feeling of impending doom pervaded his thoughts. And what of his sons? And what of his daughter? Even though they and a few other dignitaries of the nation had been ordered to the relative safety of the high seas, it was no guarantee that they would survive. And even if they did, what sort of world would they be inheriting?

Now his back was against the wall, and there remained only one option left. It was time for war. Nochtli zipped up the front of his flak jacket and primed his assault rifle for combat. Even though he was the leader of the nation, he was an active duty military veteran and had participated in some of the bloodiest battles of the nation. For him to join his family and the elite in safety was unthinkable. Even if there was no point in fighting, it had to be done. If not for life, for honor.

A young enlisted man walked into the room, "Sir, hostiles 2000 yards away. All ground units are prepared to launch an attack."

Nochtli nodded grimly at the other man. He quickly walked out to the lookout tower and looked at the coming hoard. Even though it was night, in terrifying fashion they lumbered towards the base. Nochtli raised his assault rifle sight to his eye, took aim...

"OPEN FIRE!"

A shot rung out, emanating from Nochtli's assault riffle. Without hesitation, a flurry of bullets and artillery shells poured down on the coming hoards. The explosion of land minds surrounding the base added to the cacophonous maelstrom of screaming, explosions, suffering, and death.

Virus-Z Infects Over 1 Billion
Paul Robjohns
Political Editor

GIROUX, Stretta
The unknown virus, named today as Virus-Z by numerous nations, has been spreading through the nation at an alarming rate overnight.

Military shutdown of major cities is still in force, and the national government spoke to the people early this morning. It is a statement that will be repeated throughout the day on all major networks. Goodstone stated that "our top level national scientists and scientific institutes, including those at universities throughout the nation, are working hard to find a cure alongside other Astyrian organisations. This has resulted in the creation of medium-scale weaponised cures - the likes of which are being used in other nations to create a more stable Astyria. We are reliant on other nations now to come to Stretta's aid.

"Current estimates place the population infected by Virus-Z at 1,000,000,000, although the true extent of the infection is unclear. The Strettan Government still stands by its policy of non-aggression, and will not kill our own citizens, infected or not. We urge the population to remain indoors, lock their doors and windows, and to remain calm."

It is still unclear where this virus originated, but what is clear is how devastating it can be. Citizens have been told to display a red flag or similar item in their windows if they require assistance from the military.

Forces on the ground now number those within the navy and army, as all hands are bought in to combat the spread of this infection. We will keep you updated as we know more.

Click, click, click...

And with that, Quetzalcoatl Nochtli knew it was over. It had just been a couple of hours ago that victory seemed eminent. Although at the cost of incredible bloodshed, it seemed as if the Aztec National League had a chance to beat back the undead hordes. But it was all for naught. Relentlessly they crept, through every school and every military base, through every city and every village, they crept. Not even the Aztec military was enough to stop the zombie menace. And now it was the end, both for the Aztec National League and Quetzalcoatl Nochtli.

Nochtli stood in front of a crowd of the undead. They stood still, staring maliciously at the doomed man, as if they could recognize their former leader. Nochtli could identify some of them - warriors he had just fought alongside with. Staff members that only a few days before had helped the government run. These same people that were his allies now had him cornered with nowhere to run. With slow, dreadful fashion, they began their final approach.

Nochtli knew what needed to be done.

He wiped the sweat off of his forehead and leaned over his desk. He pressed a single key on a small computer connected to the outside via satellite link, transmitting a message to the Aztec fleet that had been sent out to sea. This single key stroke would ensure that no one would ever be able to step on the formerly Aztec lands again, but perhaps it would give humanity a fighting chance. He then put his back against the corner wall and looked up, seeing the undead horde only twenty feet away.

With that, only one task remained.

Nochtli was never one who liked fate handed to him, even if that fate was ultimately death. However, he took some solace in knowing that the zombies did not, would not be the instrument of his death. Someone once said that it was preferable to die on your feet than live upon your knees. "Today," Nochtli though, "I get to test that theory."

Quickly, Nochtli grabbed two grenades attached to his flak jacket, squeezed the handles and pulled the pins. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath.

Three...

He exhaled, and took another deep breath.

Two...

He opened his eyes. Nochtli was completely surrounded by the zombie horde. The zombies closest to him stuck out there arms, just a few inches away.

One...

The zombies' hands grasped on to Nochtli's arms and shoulders and pulled him in towards the horde. Though this was the end of his life, Nochtli had a feeling of satisfaction. At least he wouldn't be one of them.

OUT ON THE HIGH SEAS...

The commanding officer of the SAS Aztlán stood in the bridge of his ship, quietly looking over his most recent report. It had been hours since they had heard from the Aztec mainland; an ominous sign that all was lost back home. It was not a happy thought - the idea that the almost the entire Aztec population was either dead or part of the zombie hoard. The officer sat down, sipped from his cup of coffee and stared out the window. His coffee tasted strongly of alcohol; but hey, who was going to enforce that law now?

-Beep, beep, beep-

An incoming transmission...from Aztec central command. Perhaps all was not lost...For one shinning second, the commanding officer imagined that the zombies had been repealed and that he could return home and help rebuild. He quickly opened the transmission and read it eagerly. As he read the short, two sentence transmission, his heart sunk.

The commanding officer sat there silent for a few minutes. He knew that there was no returning back home, not now, not ever. Yet it was still hard to condemn the homeland to a future of radioactive decay. Everyone thought moments like these were a joke, that they would never happen and were only developed in the maddened minds of think-tank statisticians and lunatics in the military. Now that the moment was here, the commanding officer couldn't help but hesitate at his orders. But his orders were clear and, more importantly, vital to humanity's continuance. He turned to his computer and typed in several codes. By 11 PM that night, nuclear explosions would tear through the corpse that was the Aztec National League, hopefully vaporizing as many of those god damned zombies as possible. Only time would tell. It always does.

After sentencing his homeland to a final, fiery death, the commanding officer got up from his chair and walked towards the living quarters. Everyone on the ship and the fleet had been deemed free of zombie influenza virus; they were to be the survivors, the legacy of the Aztec National League. The commanding officer walked into a particular room. Inside were people gathered around - government leaders, scientists, military officials, and the wife and children of Quetzalcoatl Nochtli. The commanding officer grimly looked out to his fellow survivors and said, "Operation Coda is in effect. Our Huey Tlatoani and the Aztec National League are no more."

The people in the room bowed their head in silence. A few began to cry quietly in sorrow. Zeltzin Nochtli stared blankly towards the commanding officer, not in a state of shock but in a state of resignation.

After a few moments, the commanding officer spoke again, "We've detected transmissions from some nations indicating that they were able to eliminate the zombies and find a cure. The closest surviving nations are Coffee and Cranes and The-Third-Panzermmee. Additionally, some regions outside of Astryia have survived as well. We are currently seeing which nations will accept us as their own. We have a long road ahead but we will survive.

The commanding officer then walked over to Zeltzin and the Tlatoani's three children. "I was given specific orders by Quetzalcoatl as well. He wanted to let you know that he loved you all and that his final moments were made easier knowing that you would live."

The commanding officer was then embraced by Zeltzin and the children. And for a second, this moment of extreme despair and sorrow was overcome by an act of compassion.
