A ballroom in Columbia, South Carolina
Columbia, South Carolina
2nd January, 1960

It was the yearly Party Conference of the Black Socialist Alliance, in which discussed policy, manifesto, recruitment, membership and everything else. Hundreds gathered in the rented ball-room, from the party leader of the charismatic Zamari James to basic members of just a few weeks. Funded by both local businesses and the parties funding, Zamari was determined that this decade would be the next big thing, as did his wife, Jomary Moss, 5 years younger than him, wanting to guide a new era in America. To one table, the 35-year old was discussing housing policy with his veteran civil rightist, Alfred Mighton, who was Housing Spokesperson, with Deputy Leader, Charlie Nickson, his wife, Jomary Moss and Allister Ambrose, his economic advisor and personal friend. Platters of food was given out to the tables, as an all-black jazz band was playing in the background. Sipping on some red wine, the young leader was talking with Allister Ambrose on the parties' shift in economic policy.

As the conference eventually faded, as the subject of economic and social policy had become draining for most of the members and key figures, Zamari now stood on a small podium, as the general conversation slowly faded, until silence.

"Thank you, my friends and family. This, as was last year, has been a successful conference, with our membership at record levels and our general support never better, but work is still be the done. The march for racial equality and a redistribution of our great nation's wealth remains, and we cannot back down from the fight, nor will our party ever. We cannot back down to the white nationalists, we cannot back down to the dixiecrats who seek our destruction. The fight for the equality for everyone is sill alive, and will always be alive. The struggle for justice, the struggle for equality remains at the forefront of our nation's destiny. Our quest for racial justice is also our quest for social justice, the justice of the poor man. While our progress has been impressive, our journey doesn't stop, we cannot stop. The people of America must come together to defend our ethos of liberty and freedom. We shall defend America's back-bone. The so-called populists talk of policy and popularity, but they do not understand the mind of a black man. They work with the establishment for political brownies, while the working-class here in the South, the Blackman in the south, continues to fight for rights, fight for our freedom. It is time to for everyone, whether the rich man or poor man, white or black, to know that the true struggle of America is freedom, the true struggle is for the working man of our nation. In truth, we cannot work with the establishment, but must work against the establishment, for the long-term goal of a nation which works for the many, not for the few, which works for racial equality, not racial division".

He'd take a sip of water, as the applause from the conference came through, a few cheers here and their.

"That's why I'll be announcing the beginning of our 1960 Presidential Campaign as the Leader of the Black Socialist Party, battling against the racist establishment, as-well as the challenging state and local elections. Our fight for civil rights, our fight for racial equality and our fight for a new, fairer nation. Thank you!" He said, as an enemas of cheers and clapping occurred, members and key figures in the party approaching him, shaking his hand of his first speech of the year. His wife came fourth to him, pecking him on the cheek. "Was it good?" She asked sweetly, as they both walked towards the exit, the event coming to close.

"Good as always. Back home?" She replied, as they exited the ballroom, his two bodyguards taking the couple towards his jet black car, cheers still coming towards them. As he entered the back-seat of the car, one last smile was given to the crowd of BSA members, as it sped off down the street.

Rally in New Orleans, Louisiana

In the busy streets of New Orleans, Louisiana, Zamari was upon a podium, speaking out to thousands who had gathered for his first speech since his announcement of him running for President as a third-party candidate. Sipping his regulatory glass of water, as the cheers and claps were soon zoned out, the charismatic orator began his speech.

"Thank you all, the thousands who have come out in support of our revolutionary movement, our movement for racial and economic equality for all across America. The far-right, Dixiecrat's seek to destroy not just our movement, but you. They seek to destroy the struggle for freedom, the struggle for justice. While the civil rights movement remains peaceful and non-confrontational in congress, with calling for the "working with" rather than "working against". If you do not face the devil, you are merely part of him. If these powerful and influential congressmen who believe in racial equality and racial justice want to make real, long-term change, they have to confront the right-wing populists, they to confront the decades of allowing the far-right and Dixiecrats to become mainstream views, or are merely part of a major problem here in the USA. While Congress debates economic matters, we, the people of America, the back-bone of our nation's economy, shall be march on. March on for freedom! March on for justice! March on for the dream of true racial and economic liberation! The true people of America shall lead us into the new decade, and lead us, for whatever the price is, for freedom, justice and liberty!" He'd finish, as a complex explosion of cheers, chants and claps came, some even chanting "ZAMARI!" repeatedly.

Stepping down from the podium, a slithered line appeared, as him and his wife walked their way back to their car. Soon, another large group's chants and jeers soon came closer and closer. Possibly a faction of the Blueshirts, possibly a counter-protest. Looking onwards, Zamari quickly ushered his wife into the car, as the two bodyguards looked to get the movement's key leader in as-well.

"Sir, you need to get in!" Demanded the bodyguard, as the protest, with similar numbers to that of the original one which Zamari had gathered himself. Police had already been at the scene, as a thin line emerged between the counter-protest and that of Zamari's.

He'd look to the protest, before seeing that the police likely had it covered. He rushed back into the car, as it zipped away. Looking back, the 35-year old gulped loudly, knowing he had practically fled the protest he organised. Shouting occurred between the two opposing groups, as the car made the left and right turns, as the noise and shouting of thousands became more and more quiet.

"Are you alright, honey?" He'd ask, clutching her hand.

"Y-yes. They are the Dixies, right?" She asked innocently, as Zamari tried to calm himself down, gulping once more.

"Yep. No need to worry about them. I've got a meeting with Charles tomorrow, no rally. This is gonna be a regular occurrence, and I'm truly sorry about that" He'd reply, clutching her hand a little tighter, as she leant her head on his shoulder, as the car eventually made it's way back to the highway.

Mooresville, Alabama
January 3, 1960

The air was still as frigidly cold as it had been last December. The elderly, antebellum style plantation home had tons of snow sloped around it’s sides and firmly smacking the roof with glacial looking sheets of white. The only good news is that it had stopped snowing. The bad news was that there was so much snow that the news trucks could barely squeeze through, even with all wheel drive. Senator Sparks had taken the hindsight of hiring his wife with hostess duties, piling some of the neighboring wives around the hills of rural Alabama and conscripting them in order to feed a full army of reporters.

An army that was very disappointing to Sparks. He had a few from Alabama’s pristine columns such as the Press-Register and the ever omnipotent daily paper of his native Huntsville Times, but only one dumbass from the Associated Press had even gotten the address right. Still, that member of the newspaper was pivotal in Spark’s ambitions. If nothing else, it would at least tell his native statesmen about him running for the white house.

Cletus, his chief of Staff, soon hunted the Alabaman down and urged him to come here. Sparks had just put the finishing touches on his hair, combing it so it looked nice. He licked his fingers to have a section hold it’s position, lest his toupee come off of him, which would make him red with embarrassment. He flashed a sly grin as a knock was heard on the bathroom door.

“Senay-tor Sparks. Tha’ll is a ready now for you.”

“Well, a fine hot-damn to you too! I’ll be out sooner than you can say ‘tax evasion’.”

“Tax e-”

The door swung open as the man kept his promise, showing up in a brilliantly white cotton suit with matching pants. He had made sure that he was wearing a bright red tie so it would at least stand out, especially in contrast to all the white he was applying to himself. He stopped by the first floor sink and grinned at the handsome looking son of a bitch that was staring back at him.

“Vasion…” murmured a now disappointed Cletus as Sparks was whisked from the creaky and leaky, neglected looking shutter that constituted the front door. He stood in front of a small podium, held up by a few hay bales on either side. The flag of both the Confederacy and the United States flew together as one, but Sparks made sure that Old Glory would be in front of (and blocking) the Rebel flag. Sparks mused through a few faded cards, remembering the basic speech before clearing his throat and beginning.

“h-Why… It’s quite a turn-out today. A small crowds always a good sign. Not too big for my first act, eh? I’m sure I’ll have tons of more folks at my rallies. If my wife’s cookin’ don’t serve you ill, than I’ll be sure to send the bill to my office. *heh, heh*..

Anyways, Who am I? I am Sparkin’ Sparks. The Senator of the Deep South. I am her rightful godfather and beloved grandfather. Now, when I see General Jackson on television at night, and you all see him with the on-going war in Africa. I see failure. I see nothing more than failure. His administration for the past three years has failed the American people. He has put American lives in harm’s way and has frequently disgraced Americans who died in continuing to fight this war.

Take, for example, that recent ambush. My office has personally reached out with all the widows of those eleven brave servicemen who sacrificed their lives. I have promised them… that, if they have a son who’s military age, what I would do. I would keep them at home. Their sons will remain alive, because I’m not the warmonger who’s sent them off to defeat the Nazzis or the Commie bastards in French Africa.
The current Administration is unsatisfactory to these requests. There seems to be no-one else brave enough to stand up to the bully of Jackson. That is why, yet again, I would enjoy having ballots cast nation-wide, like 1952 again for my name. I am pleased to officially tenure my candidacy for President of these United States for this year’s election.

I care about Americans coming home. That is why for the past three years of this conflict, I have drafted legislation to bring all combat personnel home by christmas! I am not an interventionist. I am the opposite of that. We can support our allies in our own back-yard. I’m all for vigorously enforcing the Monroe Doctrine. There will be no fascist domination of North America in my lifetime.

In fact, in my lifetime, I have seen empires fall and reichs or regimes rise. The Russian Empire, The Ottomans, The Spanish, I’ve seen it all! Those Nazis in Germany are some of the most repugnant and foulest smelling creatures of the planet. Unfortunately, we cannot blow them all to kingdom come, because Hitler’s got more a-bombs than he’s got balls, which is probably none since I cut them off!

Apart from my foreign policy, I urge you to keep the status quo in the South. I do not want Alabama or Mississippi’s rights as sovereign states to be impeded upon by a tyrannical, big federal government that wants to do everything. It is an area in which I agree with General Jackson. Small government- State government, can handle everything smoothly, with few exceptions. General Jackson infringed upon the rights of a sovereign state before, and his successor would undoubtedly do it again! I don't mean to wave the ‘bloody shirt’ around, but I will! I am the only candidate that will maintain the southern way of life. That is my main goal as of now, along with withdrawing American boys from the inhospitable deserts and jungles of Africa. The only needs the Federal Government can handle is national defense. I’m not about to have the Alabama national milita be deployed to Senegal, that is in the purview of the federal armies. Which we shall be withdrawing, as I have constantly done each and every year since General Jackson made this blunder. You have heard of Steward’s Folly? This is Jackson’s Blunder. The War in Africa is Jackson’s Blunder. America is on the wrong track. I ask you all, are you better off than you were eight years ago, or even four? Maybe even one year ago? I cannot wait to get to meet the exciting characters of this nation, and it’s ever expansive and wonderful landscapes. America, to me anyways, is a land of opportunity for those escaping Nazi persecution, so long as they aren’t catholic or named Al Smith. Thank you all for coming.

I shall take a few questions now.”

“Senator Sparks? Melinda Hussey of the Daily Record. What are your opinions on the voting rights act and Senator Gary’s overriding of the filibuster? And what are your opinions on Senator Long’s Plan? And Senator Long’s candidacy?”

"Senator Gary is just as bad as Senator Long! Melinda, can I call you Melinda? Good. Melinda, that so-called "voting-right's act" is nothing more than a "State constraint act". It's knee-caping the State governments to run elections as they see fit, as is defined in our beloved Constitution. States run the local elections, and even more so on a county-by county level. There needs to be limited federal intervention, enough to prevent those negros from filling the ballot boxes up north and rigging Pennsylvania with a hundred thousand fictionalized African voters. That's the real voter fraud I'm intending to prevent.

As for the man's candidacy, he seems to take the worst parts of Joseph Stalin and the worst parts of Adolf Hitler, baked them in a cake and produced the most government intrusive, Senegambian lovin' man I might have ever met, save for that lunatic negro Zamari James, who ought to be deported back to Africa where he came from! His radical leftist proposals do not work in the deep south. They might work in the hell-hole that we all know as Louisiana, but apart from fantasy land and whatever resides in the man's cranium, it won't work. I intend to block such efforts with all my might!"

“Ah, yes of course.”

She scribbled down some notes. This was a goldmine for Long’s candidacy. Sparks’ outrage at him would just spark further support for him up north.

“So, what are your opinions on Vice President Hargreaves? He appears to be the presumptive nominee. Or Governors Nelson and Graythorpe? What about Joyner or Natalie Forrest? All of them appear to be potential presidential candidates.”

"Senate President Hargreaves, I pity the poor man. I almost had the opportunity to be stuck in the Senate, if Stevenson would've given me some responsibilities apart from making sure the Democrats play nice so the Grisly Old Perspirants don't one up us on legislation, that is. However, I hold no ill-will towards the man. He was a governor, like I was. The only slight of envy I have is that he was a far more successful governor than I was. As for Governose-Governors Neslon and Graythorpe? Can't say I've heard of either of 'em, but I wish them both the best of luck. Let's at least be a good sport right out the gate, then we can start kneecapin' our opponents' horses!"

Senator Hector E. Schmidt (D-MA)
The Monocle - Washington, D.C.
January 4th, 1960

Hector shook his head as he chucked the newspaper onto the empty table that had been reserved for his dinner tonight with Senator Long. Things were moving fast: Sparks was already in the presidential race, as was that colored upstart representing the radical blacks. He could only assume that it was a matter of time before Long also declared his candidacy. Even if Hector had no interest in the White House, the announcements posed a problem for him. He couldn't let the extremes of the political spectrum begin to control the national narrative. The Democratic Party was, ever since its inception, a "Big Tent" party. If the extremists sucked up all the attention nationwide, where would that leave the majority of mainstream liberals and mainstream conservatives inching towards compromise?

It's not that Hector even considered himself an ideological "moderate." Indeed, he normally found himself sympathetic towards the positions of the self-proclaimed social liberals, and wanted to see legislative progress as much as they did. But if everyone threw their hat in the ring with the revolutionaries, what would become of the average American white man—the kind of voter Democrats desperately needed to hold onto if they wanted to keep replicating their success in Congressional elections? It was all about winning the votes to Hector, and if he simply threw his lot in with every liberal legislative laundry list item, the math simply wouldn't add up for the political party at large.

Someone would have to take up the mantle of the compromiser. If the Republicans continued to pitch candidates like Jackson, Hargreaves, and Nelson, and the best Democrats could offer was a battle of the Southern firebrands, then Hector was convinced they would be dooming themselves down the ballot for the long run.

He didn't need to discuss any of that with Long tonight, though—nor did he plan to broach the topic of presidential ambitions, unless it arose organically. He was simply here to talk about the legislative agenda. He knew that the loudmouth Louisianan wasn't exactly a "pragmatist," but he'd gotten to Deputy Whip anyhow, and so it was their job, along with the Majority Leader, to hammer out what they could feasibly accomplish with their colleagues this Congressional session. Long's maximalism might even be a good thing; even if they could realize 5% of his far-reaching vision—in the form of more moderate legislative proposals—Hector would view it as a success.

He cleared his throat and ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir as he waited for the Senator to arrive. He wasn't expecting this to be a particularly easy night, but at least it would be interesting.
I am a female. Preferred pronouns are “she” and “her.”

The Monocle

Senator Long rushed through the door, a newspaper in hand.

“Look Hector, I’m sorry for losing it earlier. Let’s just say I ain’t having the greatest day of all time. And I’m really sorry if I caused you any issues. Well, I thought I’d make it up for you somehow.”

He opened up a small paper bag.

“Mrs Long’s very own brownies. They’re delicious. I guess they explain this!”

He pointed at his, slightly wide waistline.

“Look, if there is anyway I can help with your legislation… oh, and did ya see, Sparks threw his hat into the ring. I think it’s time soon for me to make a move too. Well, ya knew that already.”

New Orleans

“…Mr James? Hello. My name is Edward Edwards, Senator James Grant Long’s Deputy Chief of Staff. I’m your liaison, if you can call it that. We’d like to discuss with you Senator Long’s plan for redistribution and Civil Rights. I’m sure you appreciate all the hard work me and Senator Long have put in to have you in our lovely little state. I see that the welcoming party has arrived. No matter, fret not, if any issues occur, then the Louisiana State Guard’ll be on your side. I made sure of it.”

Mr Edwards was a slender man. He’d been connected with all the Longs, from Huey, to Earl, to Rose, and now James. He’d always been there to help them, after all.

“So, let’s get down to business. Is there anything you want Senator Long to know? He is backing the Civil Rights act…”

“Well, you can't win the white house with just the solid south. If you pick two D- He was about to say Dixiecrats when he corrected himself. “Democrats aren't just the party of the south, we've got northerners, westerners and easterners to boot! What you need is a regional balance to the ticket. That's been conventional wisdom since the turn of the century and I'm not about to reject that for two southerners who will only win Dixie and nothing else!

I'm not so sure if I would even run for two terms. I'm sure that what I would like to get done would only take four years in the White House, who's to say you really need eight? The last President we had that limited himself to one term was Coolidge, though he doesn't count since he filled in the last year of Warren G. Teapot Harding. The last one I can recall would be... uh... um... I think Hayes. I don't belive Hayes ran for a second term, but didn't happen to succeede the from the last guy that got shot in the ass or brains or chest, like Arthur with President Garfield. ”

He sat with his slightly-younger wife beside him, at a fairly nice restaurant in a nice part of New Orleans. He had been awaiting Edward Edwards, with him having ordered an expensive bottle of wine for the 3 of them. The liaison sat down, asking:

Zamari took a sip of his French red wine, before telling him, "I want him just one thing - we're not backing down. Long may have the infulence and the power, but we have the people. While I accept he could potentially be our President by next year, we are political rivals, and that's how it works" He took a short pause, before continuing. "If he backs the Civil Rights Act, which is a surprise for a guy who's in love with Hitler, than that'll be progress. Now, shall we discuss some business over future rallies and protests?" He'd ask, smirking to his wife.

Hector smiled as he watched Long burst through the entrance. Same old James; say what you want about him, but you couldn't deny that he had a big personality. He reached out his hand for a hearty shake as the Senator handed him the bag of brownies.

"They smell delicious, James. Thank you very much." He placed the bag aside and looked the man in the eye, chuckling as he moved the topic straight to the presidential election. Always a sharpshooter, James Long.

"Yes, I saw. And of course, you've made it no secret that you're looking at a run. And I wish all the best to you." He paused, reaching out to the bottle of red wine that was delivered to their table. "Some wine?" Hector took the liberty of pouring some for himself.

"As you know, James, a presidential campaign is a big responsibility...a lot of time out on the road, and not a lot of time back here on the job," he said with a glint in his eye. "This means that, if you're looking at a run, we have to decide early on what we might want to focus on passing. This supermajority, James...it won't last forever. Some might even argue we don't even technically have one. In any other country, would you and Willie Sparks be in the same party?" He scoffed at the idea.

"Civil Rights, obviously, is at the very top of my list. And I like the little lady's bill, I really do. I think Ms. Nelson's right that Voting Rights is important. But the Dixiecrats, obviously, hate it, and it doesn't matter if we can break their filibuster...if we do this randomly, we're risking mayhem. I want this done in an orderly manner on an orderly timeframe, with the backing of a President in an expansive enough manner." He took another sip of his wine.

"I fear that, if we just go ahead on this bill so early, we'll kill any momentum to pass additional civil rights legislation...like a Civil Rights bill proper. '57 wasn't enough; you hear what the activists say. We need a law that bans discrimination outright—in workplaces, in public accommodations, in voter registrations, the whole shebang. And I want that passed in a package, along with Voting Rights. You see why we need to tread carefully here, don't you? I want to count every cosponsor, every vote in both chambers. Make sure its veto proof, filibuster proof, and big enough so that when the Dixiecrats attack—as they inevitably will—it will be too late for them."

"But for now, I need the Dixiecrats. The Party needs them. Which is why I'm thinking, we start a process on Civil Rights. You'll help me begin negotiations with Republican leaders—maybe we can find a point-person in the party, someone more versed on the issue than me and someone who will be less busy in the coming months than you. And then we drag this process out over the next few months and, in the meantime, we rally the whole party—Dixiecrats, Northerners, everyone—around other legislation that we want to get passed with everyone's votes."

"That's my plan, anyway. What do you think?"

The Monocle

"You know what? You're right, and I won't hesitate to say it. I know Senators Nelson and Gary are open to workin' with you and I. And I hear, from my papers, that George Graythorpe is gonna be in town at some point, to curry favour for his civil rights plan. If we take Sparks' desperation for him to be on side, even he might vote for it. Course he'd give us some hogwash about placating the coloreds, but I'll take it. I hear that the speaker is gonna be a right pain in the rear end. Well perhaps an earful of me might change his mind on these issues. Or perhaps we might just find that someone found he met with a brownshirt a while back. Anyhow, we can work with this. You betcha that we can get those Dixies back.”

He took a big gulp of his wine, and flicked through his paper; in both senses of the word.

Municipal Hall, Westfield
2nd Jenuary 1960

Dorsey was in his office, studing his political campaign for the elections in Massachussetts, he needed support from other parts, not only from the Judiciary and from the party, he needed someone who was influent and very popular. He started to think about the potential supporters, when the someone knocked at the Door " Who Is ? " Asked, " i'm the secretary, mr Dorsey, there Is a letter for you " " give it to me and leave me alone please, i Need to think" he sayed. After the secretary closed the door he opened the letter and was quite surprised by Who wrote It : It was the governor of New York

Governor Nelson's Letter :

Mayor Dorsey,

As you are certainly aware by now, I've been running for president for the better part of the year, traveling the country and meeting individuals, both private citizen and public official. From city council members to governors, from mayors to senators. I am struck by the immense talent and desire for productive change I see. In building my campaign, I've found, partnered and highlighted exceptional individuals who are clearly capable of helping lead this country deeper into this decade. They've linked me with more other people like them. In doing this in Massachussetts, I've been consistently recommended you. After a full assestment of the facts, given your recent announcement of your run for the governorship of Commonwealth of Massachussetts, I wish to offer you my endorsement. I hope that you'd be simiilarly willing to endorse my own campaign for president.

Governor of New York, Robert Nelson.

Dorsey was shocked by the contents of the letter and thrilled at the same time: the opportunity of a lifetime had presented itself to his eyes. " YES, this is the occasion of my Life " shouted, and soon started to write a response letter. Governor Nelson

Dorsey's Letter
I am very honored by your endorsement of my candidacy in the state elections and I will be very grateful to endorse your candidacy for the presidency, I hope this is the beginning of a wonderful cooperation

Kind regards from Evan Dorsey, Mayor of Westfield.

finished writing the letter he asked the secretary to send it to the post office, in the meantime he picked up the phone and called his friend and deputy mayor, George Kellerman

"hello George, I've found the opportunity of our lives"

"Evan continues"

"Governor Nelson has offered to support me in my election bid, provided I support his, and of course I accepted"

"Great, mail the letter and let's see how it goes," concluded Kellerman, before hanging up the call. Finally the opportunity had presented itself and it would have been the beginning of Dorsey's political
climb.

Governor Nelson read the recent reports on the current proceedings of the US Senate regarding the Guranteed Voting Rights Act. It seemed, unexpectedly, but rather pordigiously, Senator Hector Schmidt, the democratic majority whip and senator from Massachusetts, was proving to be an obstacle. And Governor Nelson was right now, at the moment, stepping into Massachusetts in a big way with this endorsement. There was an opportunity here.

He received a letter confirming Mayor Dorsey's would be endorsing him. This would be an excellent excuse for a high profile rally in Massachusetts, that would help undermine the cause of the Democratic Party in the state and the rest of New England, while enhancing his own crediblity with the civil rights movement. But this is something that needed to be organized quickly, not by letters, so he quickly got his secretary to pull up Mayor Dorsey's number, so he could call him directly.

Dorsey was sitting in his office while he received a call " Who Is, oh, Mr Nelson, how its going" after the governor finished arguing the situation with his new opponent, senator schimdt, Dorsey finally said "don't worry mr. nelson, the rally will go well, i've been a lawyer, i know how to handle it, sure, this schimdt is a hindrance , but nothing I can't solve, indeed, I think I have found an ally for our cause " he concluded, the governor, reassured, ended the phone call. Dorsey meanwhile concentrated on the letter to his new ally

OCC : this was a joint post between me and Cybernetic Socialist Republics
