Main Strengths:
Power to the People: Marshall grew up as an impoverished and young black kid in segregated Wisconsin. Through his whole life, he's known struggle. He's seen the things people had to deal with just to put bread on the table. Due to this, many of the people in his own District of Milwaukee know Marshall since he was a kid, and many of the workers he's met throughout his life have come to support him and respect him. He has a large growing amount of support amongst the lower class in Wisconsin, and knows how to utilize that to rise up through the ranks.
Intelligence Speaks for Itself: Marshall after leaving the Army had went to law school to work as a Civil Rights Attorney. For this reason, he is excellent at law and legal paperwork. He knows how the system works and how to utilize it to help other people. He also knows various lawyers personally from his time as an attorney, so he knows connections and those who can help them whenever he needs help with cases.
A Socialist Midwest: Wisconsin is famous for having many socialist politicians, as well as general left wing politicians throughout history. This has helped Marshall bring about a more openly progressive front amongst a sea of moderate Democrat and Dixiecrats. With Wisconsin being more open about left-wing ideals, he hopes to spread the rest of those throughout the Midwest. He has a lot more support amongst the poor and black working class of Milwaukee due to this, which could help him in the future if he were to decide to go up in the ranks of US politics.
Main Weaknesses:
It's the 1960s: While Marshall was able to get himself elected into the House of Representatives, he's still a young black politician in the 60s. Due to this, it takes extremely much more effort to be able to keep his position, and there is a general danger with being a public black politician. Within Wisconsin, it's one of the more heavily segregated states and outside the Milwaukee area, he isn't looked at favorably by other Midwesterners. He also faces danger from his colleagues, as he is a young black progressive as opposed to being in the middle.
Passionate: Marshall is extremely passionate for what he believes in. While this may be a good thing sometimes, it has also lead him into getting into more arguments and fights. He's extremely stubborn and will call out things like racism openly, which may pit him against the broader public. He's also stubborn in that he's unwilling to try and compromise with the more right-wing politicians within the US political system, so it is harder for him to make connections with other people, as he's openly hostile to many of them already and isn't afraid to show it. That doesn't put him in good graces with the US media as well, so he has to focus on attacks from multiple fronts.
War is Hell: During his time in the service, Marshall was deployed in the pacific. Seeing the brutality during World War Two disgusted him, both for what the American soldiers did and the amount of brutality against innocent civilians caught in the crossfire. Ever since then, he's been affected from both PTSD and an injury he had gotten during his time as a soldier. It's something that he lives with everyday and it plagues him. Despite being a veteran, he is staunchly anti-war and doesn't feel any sense of American patriotism, especially from the racism he experienced during his time in the army.
Biography: Marshall Williams was born in Minnesota. His father was a factory worker and his mom a stay-at-home mom. When he was 3, he moved with his family to Wisconsin, as his father was relocating to a factory job within Milwaukee. Growing up, he had been poor. Despite this, his family did the best they could to provide him with a good life. Due to his families economic status, Marshall began doing odd jobs around town. Growing up, he saw the racism and segregation that plagued Wisconsin. Despite this, he tried to work the hardest he could, trying to bring lunch on the table with his father. Everything changed when his father died in a factory accident. Worrying about facing homelessness, Marshall began working full-time, ignoring school work so he could make sure he and his mom had a home. By the time he was 20, he realized he didn't want to live a life of destitution.
As soon as he turned 18, he decided to join the army. He was able to access the education he lacked when he was younger. For a while, things seemed to be calm in America, until America was brought into WW2 when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Joining the Pacific Front, Marshall was deployed. Despite going through training, nothing prepared him for the violence he would see while fighting abroad. Seeing his own squad mates getting shot to mush, innocent civilians lying dead on the ground. It angered him to his core. He was fighting against fascism, but even when he was fighting for America, he still experienced the hatred his fellow soldiers would give to him. He grew disillusioned with it all. He probably would have been another dead soldier, except he had gotten injured, when a shot pierced his knee. Unable to continue walking normally ever again, he was honorably discharged. Coming back home, he had the opportunity to get the higher education he finally wanted. Moving back to Milwaukee, he quickly applied to law school. Marshall was surprised when they accepted him. He was going to have a new life.
While he was in college as an attorney, he had also begun reading leftist authors and theory. In Wisconsin, a small group of socialists had existed. Hoping to bring his leftist ideals into the workforce, he quickly begun his work as a Civil Rights Attorney, helping minorities, the disabled and the poor in the best way he could. He worked with various local unions, and tried to bring his hometown to a more progressive front. Realizing he could only do so much as a Civil Rights Attorney, he had started campaigning to join the US House of Representatives. Surprisingly, he was voted in to represent Milwaukee. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows at first, he was a leftist black politician. He had to face many who would wish to see him fail.
Despite this, he is hoping to bring about leftist politics throughout America. He recognizes the Midwest as the best place to start, and is always willing to fight back against fascism and right-wing extremists, whether nationally or internationally.
