Main Strengths:

Charismatic, Folksy, very popular with the people, master orator, related to Huey Long, has a powerful political machine, and highly influential in Washington. Also friends with many a businessman and news editor. Has some monetary “persuasion” methods. Fiery on and off the senate floor, often giving press conferences, and debates that devolve into shouting matches.

Main Weaknesses:

Accused of corruption, and dictatorship as governor of Louisiana (and appointed his mother as governor afterwards), is relatively extreme, and not all too popular amongst his colleagues. Also highly divisive. Not really a beloved colleague of too many congresspeople. Very opportunistic.

Biography:

James Grant Long, son of infamous Governor and Senator Huey Long, and nephew of former Senator Earl Long, served as governor for 5 years, between 1948 and 1953, before his mother, Rose McConnell Long became governor (though she would soon retire), and appointed him as US Senator, to fill a vacant seat left by the death of Earl Long. In the Senate election afterwards, he won in a landslide.

Now, he serves faithfully as US Senator, masterfully domineering other senators, and outright holding bills to ransom, with his faction of the Democratic Party, and incomprehensible webs of business and news connections, whilst seizing power as deputy whip. He has been accused of dictatorial actions, when he was governor, as well as widespread corruption. It is believed he intends to run for president, as implied by his book “my first 200 days”, and campaigning in many southern states. Many skeletons may be lurking, however…

As Governor, his approval was very high, as he expanded on massive “Share Our Wealth” programs, and introduced a wealth cap and consumption tax, often strong arming the legislature, and having the Louisiana Guard storm KKK headquarters, and then telling the press (after the AG called his actions unconstitutional), “no-one asked his opinion”. His social views are notably liberal, and he proposes a Universal Healthcare and full civil rights bill, despite opposing forced busing out of district citing “it would worsen education”, which seemingly, despite Louisiana being firmly anti-civil rights, is happy with, as he is still seen as a pinnacle of governance. He is popular in most areas of the nation, but many people don’t know if his populist image will stand up to scrutiny. He has also been accused of being a flip-flopper, though these haven’t really stuck, as his demagogic command of speech has allowed him to mostly brush off his somewhat two-sided history on civil rights.

-Brilliance of the Young: Youngest Senator in 1960, played politics like a game to win the plurality vote despite the fact that Idaho had a Republican supermajority, by taking advantage of his influence in the younger generation and the dropping popularity of the older incumbent and his ex-mentor

-Open Book: An outgoing, extroverted, and charming man, everyone knows what he stands for and against. This openness is what helped him win the 1956 class 3 election in Idaho. Even in the Senate, Church is very clear on what he believes in and isn’t afraid to go against the Democratic Party if he believes it is right to do so. He also wants the whole government to be open about their doings.

-American Patriot: Is a veteran of WW2, fought in Southeast Asia for 4 years and led from the age of 20 til the war ended.

-Intelligence Officer: While he is an open book, Casey can use his skills from military intelligence to find the truth in any situation, whoever it hurts.

-People person: He doesn’t always lean to one side, which helps him gain popularity with almost anyone.

Main Weaknesses:

-Morality: He will always try to do what he thinks is right. This can get him in trouble with the party leaders, as evidenced by his removal from the Democratic caucus during 1957. His morality can betray him.

-Smartest in the Room: While he is a good people person and a brilliant politician, he is seen as a know-it-all sometimes and doesn’t enjoy criticism.

-First term: Casey has never been in a government position before, this inexperience is another factor that can make him unpopular among conservative politicians.

Biography: Forrest Casey was born on July 24, 1924 in Boise, Idaho to a middle class family where his grandfather (whom he was named after) went to strike it rich during the gold rush. His father, Frank Casey owned a sporting goods store. His family was Catholic and very conservative. He idolized Idaho Senator, William Borah, and even visited his coffin after he died in 1940.

He was popular in his high school, where he was the student body president. He graduated in 1942, a few months before he joined the army because of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He trained at Camp Ritchie and was one of the Ritchie Boys. When he turned 20 he was promoted to 2nd lieutenant and served as an intelligence officer in Burma. He was inducted to the Infantry Hall of Fame and was honorably discharged.

In 1947 he married Bethine Thomas, daughter of former Governor Robert Thomas, and got into Harvard University. During this time he began leaning towards the Democratic Party, and in 1950 he became chair of the Young Democrats Association. In 1952, after graduating from Harvard, he attempted to run for the Idaho State Legislature unsuccessfully. However, in 1956, after gaining some prominence, he was able to beat out the old, sour mentor, Glen Taylor, and the disgraced incumbent, Republican Herman Welker.

After being elected, he soon got out of good graces with the Democratic Party, and grew his status as a progressive when he supported the Civil Rights Act of 1957. In 1958 he was assigned to the Foreign Relations committee, and as an internationalist and fanatic of William Borah, he could now follow his dream of being like Borah. Now his goal is to surpass what his idol accomplished.

I applied as Frank Church, who switched to the Republican Party in this timeline when he was removed by the Democrats.

I've revised the number of delegates, and now the two parties have different numbers of delegates as well.

The formula for number of delegates:

Each state receives a base allocation of 6 delegates. Each state receives 3 delegates for each congressional district in the state.
Each state receives 4.5 delegates plus 60% of its number of electoral votes, depending on if they voted for the Democrats or Republicans in the 1956 presidential elections (states that voted for Republicans get the bonus in republican primaries, states that voted Democrats get the bonus in democratic primaries).

He should either be against or be a moderate, but full support for expanding civil rights as a Louisiana Senator at the time seems pretty odd. In an older version of this RP, we had a similar character to yours who was economically progressive but moderate on civil rights, so you could go down that route to have broader appeal than a Dixiecrat, if you want to.

Once this is changed, I will be more than happy to accept your app.

Well, I’ll explain, but basically, Huey Long expy. The Louisianans were so sucked up by his populist rhetoric, they just stopped caring that he supported racial equality. When asked how he would treat blacks if he were to become President, Long responded, "Treat them just the same as anybody else, give them an opportunity to make a living, and to get an education." He also repeatedly stated:

“I'm for the poor man — all poor men, black and white, they all gotta have a chance. They gotta have a home, a job, and a decent education for their children. 'Every man a king' — that's my slogan.”

Remember, he was one of Louisiana’s most popular governors. It’s possible. You just need to be charismatic enough to charm a rock. But if that explanation isn’t ok, I guess I’ll edit it. I’ll also probably sign up as a George McGovern expy.
