Character Name: Essen Salay

Gender: Female

Age: 21

Appearance: This. She's from a line of American expats of German and Anglo-Saxon descent.

Occupation: Illegal cybernetics buyer, surgical assistant (though she'll say she buys parts for a mechanic)

Personality: Essen knows there is more to life than scouring the black market for bits of hardware and metal. There must be, for the city is far too great to contain only her world. Someday, she'll escape it. Someday, she'll have an existence better than this. Essen is nothing if not fierce, and with the strange power within her she is destined for something more. She just has to find a way out.

Biography: Her father was never officially trained in the installation of cybernetics. When he began working in the trade thirteen years ago, he did so to keep Essen clothed and fed. He loved his daughter, but Essen knew he resented her; after all, because he had her at seventeen, he couldn't attend a school to train for his dream career. Before then, he was a mechanic, or so Essen thought. Just a simple man trying to make his way in the universe. Unlike her mother, a hostess at a diner four blocks away, he had connections. So when he brought Essen to his new operating center in an abandoned industrial space, it was partially because of who he knew, partially because of who he was.

Since she lived with her father, it was only natural that she became his helper after school and on weekends. He had her fetch parts for his operations and experiments, taught her to pay the bills, showed her how to properly sanitize tables so they could get it done faster together. It was a strange secret existence, but it gave Essen a sense of purpose and drew her closer to her father. He introduced her to his patients under a false name, assured them his daughter wasn't handling the procedure but simply helping out. After all, no one would trust a child to install cybernetics. On days when Essen couldn't be his assistant, he brought in someone else, a man named Kal. Kal was indifferent toward Essen, but she didn't mind. As long as he didn't hurt her, he could stay.

Her connection with Psyche developed not long after her father began illegally implanting people with cybernetics. It came to her as a weighted blanket, a hug in the dead of night when she felt confused and alone. For all the uncertainties in her life, all the fear that filled her when she saw the way clients gave her odd looks, she finally had something that was safe and made sense. She told her father first, then her mother, who by then had fallen in love with a man. Her father was skeptical, her mother beset by a grim resilience that vexed Essen until her mother said that, yes, she had known of people like this. Her uncle had been that way with his tools. The quake of '73 saw Essen using Psyche for the first time as armor to protect her from the rubble. Her father's workshop was lost, and he had to begin anew. And he did, with a vengeance.

As a teenager, her father, worried for his daughter's safety, taught Essen how to defend herself. She learned how to fight with knives, and, while she's never had the opportunity to use them, she feels comfortable with her knives in her hands and never goes anywhere without them. They sent a message that she was strong, that she wasn't vulnerable. Outwardly, she was lithe, strong, determined. She was hardworking and fierce, assertive and clever. Inwardly, she was raw and desperate to flee the dark side of Santa Francesca.

Upon finishing school, Essen worked full-time under her father. He'd been paying her in bits and pieces, but now he had to give her a steady income.
She set aside her own funds for the day she could finally be free of the life she lived. That day has yet to come, but she is certain it will.

RP History: Boop
Boop 2 electric boogaloo

Spectral Application
Name of Spectre: Psyche

Appearance: Usually manifests as a pink and blue glow around Essen when in armor mode or a pink-and-blue translucent circle with a defined border and faint square grid. Otherwise, it appears as either a neon pink or blue mist or shimmering light.

Appearance Type: Phenomenon

Intelligence Type: Automatic

Ability Type: Close-Range

Ability: Can form body armor that protects Essen from close-ranged attacks by reducing the level of damage they do or sparing Essen from injury. The more severe the attack, the less effective the armor; as such, Essen can get injured. Psyche can also appear as a circular shield four feet in diameter that Essen can wield. It is almost weightless and thus easy to use, but she cannot maneuver a weapon with that arm when this is the case. Interestingly, Psyche can form a barrier that acts as a wall or flame retardant for an area up to around 36 feet; it typically takes the shape of a sheet or a dome around Essen. It is impassable by any except Essen and remains in place once formed unless more immediate danger shifts to another location. Psyche can also act as a sort of bag for handheld items that protects them from the elements or protects the outside world from them (one or the other; if the object is volatile, it will work to protect Essen from the object's effects, but if the object is something like a camera, it will protect the camera from damage or things such as rain). In extreme situations, Psyche can act as a blanket for Essen, giving her comfort, or as a pillow. Psyche's form naturally emits a glow that provides up to a foot's worth of illumination, though this effect does not have any substantial benefit. (Will nerf where necessary.)

Strengths: Psyche reduces the severity of injuries afflicted upon Essen when in armor mode and deflects attacks when in shield mode. It serves as a source of protection and comfort while also providing utility. Also, it looks awesome.

Limitations: Psyche is not invulnerable and can take damage, especially from ranged attacks such as guns. After each period of use, Psyche has an hour-long "recharge" in which it cannot manifest to protect Essen. Furthermore, there are ways to get around Psyche when it's being used as a shield (someone could go around behind her, for instance). Psyche also reduces her stealth by making her visible. Using Psyche as armor or a shield for longer than thirty minutes at a time also depletes Essen's energy. Because Psyche is Automatic, Essen cannot control how Psyche manifests, though this supposed shortcoming is made up by Psyche typically assuming a form most useful to the situation.

So one thought I had, if the premise of this RP is a group of vigilantes working together and stumbling on shit when it starts going down, how are we handling the group part?

Nice to see you here WF!

On a separate note, figured I'd collect links to all accepted apps for North's convenience when he gets around to making a list.

Amelia, Xun, Terrence, Hector, Octavian, Blake, Jorge, Chloe, Henry.

Just noticed this but Xun is not his first name, that is his last name. Since Chinese names go last name first and first name. Just not wanting people to refer to him as his last name all the time.

Though I do realize now that he would change that since he is living in a new country. So going to edit my app to change that name-wise.

Well, this is why I had Harry rent a room directly over Amelia's family taqueria: North presumably has to figure out a way to pull Amelia into the plot, and I merely have to figure out a reason for Harry to get pulled in with her. He's a reporter, so if he notices Amelia getting into anything that seems remotely newsworthy, Harry will just invite himself along.

Now, the rest of you who didn't cheat and have your characters live in the same building as the OP's character - you might have to get more creative.
For really, I think that the poorest he that is in England hath a life to live as the greatest he. And therefore truly, Sir, I think it's clear that every man that is to live under a Government ought first by his own consent to put himself under that Government. And I do think that the poorest man in England is not at all bound in a strict sense to that Government that he hath not had a voice to put himself under.

I would recommend making her specter a bit more versatile, such as giving protection to items at the expense of not using it herself—just an idea.

Amelia will obviously be at the Bordeaux and intervene for her call to action. Those around her age group can be a friend of hers and use that as a reason to tag along.

For those with characters unable to necessarily do that, I recommend having them have their own reasons to go to the casino or speak with me. There is a larger mystery at play, and there can be more than one connecting string.

Got my first IC post up. Writing posts in the form of diary entries is the closest I can come to having my character give a noir-movie voiceover of his own life.

Character Name: Tanya and Lia (Talia) Morillo
Gender: F
Age: 26
Appearance: Tanya, Lia
Occupation: Programmer/Hacker
Personality:
Embracing the eclectic blend of cynicism and idealism that defines the punk subculture, Talia is outspoken and deliberately disruptive. She is distrustful of authority and rails against what she sees as malevolent corporations and corrupt governments leeching the life out of her country to line their own pockets. She decries the seeming obliviousness of the masses to their own exploitation, and shares her opinions with the like-minded both in seedy dens and online bulletin boards. And yet for all her disillusionment and dystopian doomerism, she has embraced the promise of the future.

With her views tending towards anarchism and a penchant for engrossing herself in conspiracy theories ranging the gamut from believable to far-fetched, Talia can often come across as antisocial if she isn’t deliberately trying to make herself presentable. This social awkwardness is only accentuated by her spectre's impact. She can sometimes come across as being detached or distracted, with her single mind juggling the mental load of managing multiple bodies at once. A weaker instinct towards self-preservation can also make Talia seem reckless or foolish - especially when her actions inadvertently place her allies in harm’s way as well.

Biography:
Tanya and Lia Morillo were born as a pair of healthy twins. Their mother was an up-and-coming corporate executive, while their father was a researcher at la Universidad Nacional. While twins had been unexpected, the girls’ parents were nevertheless relieved when there didn’t appear to be any complications around their birth. Although there were some stern words to the doctors that had failed to notice the twin pregnancy.

Even from a young age, Tanya and Lia were inseparable. Even for twins, they seemed to get along exceptionally well. With their parents kept largely busy with their work, the girls were predominantly raised by nannies and token contributions from their older siblings. Preferring to keep themselves company, the twins’ parents first became concerned when they were slow to start speaking. While Tanya and Lia seemed to innately understand one another, they struggled to form cohesive sentences with others. Instead, the two girls often bounced words off of one another, completing each others’ phrases and trains of thought. Fearing a mental disability, their parents were relieved when the pair started to excel academically. While social interactions still proved challenging, and the two girls never truly formed any solid friendships beyond their own tight-knit pairing, Tanya and Lia were consistently vying for the top two spots in each of their classes. As children are prone to do, the two started to refer to themselves as “Talia”: a simplistic play on both of their names. Overcoming multiple accusations of cheating, the two girls came to be accepted as intellectual savants. Much to the thrill of their social-ladder-climbing parents.

And then, much like most of the city’s inhabitants, the Earthquake turned their lives upside down.

When the shaking stopped, Tanya was left buried deep beneath the rubble of the family home. Distraught at the loss of one of their children, the twins’ parents lent their tears to Paso del Rey’s outpouring of grief. But while Lia’s siblings sought to console, Lia herself seemed almost dismissive of her twin’s apparent death. Instead, she insisted that Tanya was fine. Her family believed that this was her way of dealing with the immediate shock and trauma. Or at least they did until the next morning, when they awoke to find not only both Tanya and Lia safely asleep, but a third twin next to them as well.

In the Earthquake’s immediate aftermath, Nueva Iberia was a land of fear and suspicion. The Flight of the Rodriguez Family caused rumors and hearsay to swirl among the populace, and Talia’s parents reacted with shock to the discovery of their daughter’s condition. Priests were summoned to perform exorcisms on the twins to expel any spirit that may have possessed them. Talia’s insistence that her powers were not the result of a Tulpa fell on death ears in those early days. It ultimately took a visit by an Imperial Guard acolyte, who confirmed that Talia had indeed manifested a spectre, to finally put her parents’ most frightful concerns at ease. But the damage had already been done, and a permanent rift had formed within the Morillo household.

While her parents tried to mend the relationship, Talia continued to drift away from the rest of her family. Despite her impressive grades and noteworthy intellect, she was increasingly disinterested in pursuing the corporate future that her parents had imagined for her. She instead started to fall in with different kinds of crowds, spending more and more of her time away from both home and school. On the few times that her parents were able to drag her in for a family dinner, it often devolved into heated arguments. Arguments that would erupt either from criticisms of Talia’s truantism or Talia’s own lambasting against the corporate world that her parents were so thoroughly a part of.

When they graduated from high school, the Talia twins continued to at least nominally follow the high expectations that had been set by their parents. Easily earning a place at the prestigious Universidad Nacional to study electrical engineering and computer science, the girls greedily soaked up the knowledge from their classes. But with at least two heads with which to tackle their work, Talia had plenty of free time to pursue her own hobbies and interests as well. Becoming associated with the university’s youthful punk scene, she became a regular attendee at public protests. Scuffling with police on a number of occasions, Talia’s parents had to pull strings on more than one occasion to ensure that she was released promptly from detention.

With no intention of acquiring a regular and stable job, Talia graduated from university to work as a freelancer. She set her own hours and she picked her own clients. Customers tended to find her through word-of-mouth, hearing of her expertise and discretion when it came to particular jobs. Paso Del Rey’s underworld is a lucrative business, and it was the natural home for the city’s anti-establishment punks. But over time, the idealism of her college years has started to give way to a growing cynicism. For the past few years, Talia has earned herself a reputation as a ruthless hacker-for-hire, with a willingness to get her hands dirty in the name of completing a job. But she’s always been sure to avoid sticking her neck out too far. More than most, she is aware of how easy it can be to track somebody down in Nueva Iberia.

Notable Cybernetics or Implants:
[Neural Implant] - An interface that allows for Talia to effortlessly interface with most digital and networked technology. Fitted out with cyberware and circuitry that can allow her to effectively hack on-the-fly, Talia effectively carries all her equipment with her. Even air-gapped networks aren’t safe from her intrusions if a team can get her close to an access point.

RP History: Somewhere in the Dark

Name of Spectre: Doppelganger
Appearance: A flowing cloud of purple fog
Appearance Type: Abstract
Intelligence Type: Non-sapient
Ability Type: Close-range

Ability: Allows Talia to create copies of herself and inanimate objects. The process takes concentration and effort, although the amount of both can vary. While it's effortless for Talia to maintain two bodies, and fairly easy to manage three, any more can be quite taxing to manage. Similarly when replicating inanimate objects, she has more difficulty with more complicated devices. When she runs out of energy to maintain a replica, it dissipates.
Strengths: Doppelganger’s duplication ability can make Talia a particularly frustrating opponent to deal with. A fight with her is never a one-on-one affair. Outside of direct conflict, Doppelganger can also allow for Talia to complete most tasks more quickly than a single individual ever could. She can read multiple books at once, cook breakfast while doing laundry, or hack into a system from multiple entry points at once. Doppelganger’s ability grants Talia a powerful degree of flexibility.
Limitations: Copying more complex objects takes more energy from Talia, and she has to maintain some degree of concentration to keep a copy from dissipating into nothingness. While her resting state has two versions of herself, she struggles to maintain more than three bodies at once for an extended period of time. Talia can also have her attention be increasingly divided by the mental load of managing multiple bodies, and something that is particularly shocking might distract all of her at once.

Posted! My idea is that Essen's family assimilated, so she speaks primarily Spanish and some English. Not sure about the timeline of when you want us to be near the casino (for some reason my brain thinks in the evening), so I'll adjust the time frame as needed.

I have taken you up on the post that I made two days before I had intended.

Also, is there any chance of a discord or is communicating in the OOC alright?

Great character idea Ben; I like it. ACCEPTED. Not sure if I like the implications for in-universe abortion debates on psionic prenatal abilities, but that's one bridge I'll have to cross.

I would possibly recommend a slightly more unique spectral appearance that perhaps ties into how they manifest and gives her a way to fight Spectres/Tulpas. Psionic gas is always weak to the suck.

Union Princes wrote:snip

I would flip that, actually. The best way to describe the setting is approaching cyberpunk, but not there yet. Corporations are still weaker than governments; unions still have sway. Implants are expensive and dangerous. The internet is still a DOD program, etc.

Things will get worse (and better) as the story goes along, so that's when you should expect Blade Runners and Edgerunners going about.

I liked it! Not sure if Roberto the Protectron is a big talker, but I enjoyed the back-and-forth between the father and daughter. Also, an excellent way to be connected to the story without buying tacos, lol.

Would we like a Discord, or do we like the OOC usage? It does help keep us on top of P2TM.

I'd also like to give a shoutout to UP, Theyra, and Aud for their posts as well. Do you guys like discussing what you liked or didn't like in each post in your other RPs? I find it's a good way to have discussions and feedback.

Thank you. IDK what Roberto is like; Roberto was just some rando I threw in to add depth to the background.
