___________________
Character Name: Roandriana “Savyarani”
House/Clan/Family: Hova
Religion: Khodaism (Publicly)
Age: 24
Gender: F
Role/Occupation/Titles: Amira-e-Haram, Princess (formerly Empress-to-be)
Description: By any account, Princess Roandriana is regarded as a resplendent addition to the royal harem. Once described by a southern noble as, “a woman molded as if one of the Sangam poets spoke her into being,” Roandriana certainly can be said to live up to this high praise. As described by one of the previous Emperor’s scribes, “[Roandrianda] is of modest height, with delicate hands and feet alike—well suited to the palace life after years of scrubbing away those pesky calluses of her youth.

Her figure is not necessarily slender, but indeed pleasantly proportioned. Her waist is slight, though just a bit soft if one sees her clothes taut when she sits. It flares out pleasantly into wide, childbearing hips, though her widest point is slightly lower in the thighs. Her breasts are, by all accounts, modest in size, though one could imagine that they might become greater once she is with child.

Her waist-length hair is perfectly black, with moderate curls and a strong sheen, not unlike that of some southerners. Her skin tone, similarly, is somewhere between uncooked rakthashali and red kaje rice, though her complexion is said to have been significantly darker in the past when she did not shun the sun. Her eyes are pleasant, if among the less remarkable parts of her form. They are large, certainly larger than one would expect them, and dark brown in color. Her lips are, as has been said in pagan texts, like the bimba fruit. In terms of facial features, perhaps the only aspect of her which can be spoken of in a negative light is her nose. It is decently proportioned at the top, and not at all crooked, but does become somewhat too wide at the base.”

Beyond her physical appearance, Roandriana is fond of most jewelry, though she merely tolerates necklaces. She always wears the same ornate earrings, ones ordered custom-made from a jeweler that are made from glass beads, ivory, and carved cow teeth, which she privately regards as talismen. She regularly wears kohl, though she insists on having an attendant apply it for lack of confidence in her abilities. She is very appreciative of high quality fabrics, often having more interest in the quality of the fabrics and the composition of her clothes than its appearance.

While not opposed to the luxury of the court, Roandriana often seems a bit lost as to what to do with all the opulence present, though enjoys its benefits nonetheless. Her bearing is rather artificial, characteristic of behaviors learned later in life. Her manners are more than sufficient, but were she placed in peasant’s clothing, she would likely not stand out as anything more than the daughter of someone reasonably well-to-do. She presents herself as modest and placid, but through interactions with her, it may become clear that her demure, friendly smile only represents her feelings on her own position, not her feelings towards others.

Though her voice is quiet and she is rarely seen to raise her voice, Roandriana still makes an effort to maintain an imposing presence worthy of the highest ranking woman in the empire. She regards the harem as her own realm, in a way and privately values peace above all else. Her methods of maintaining this peace, however, are far from gentle. Her position is fairly unthreatening to most ambitious concubines, as she is barren, and her apparent lack of ambition only furthers this. Using this common perception, Roandriana makes a point of being a good listener and befriending servants to pick up on whispers of power plays. Her private endeavors consistently center around the problem of picking out instigators of conflict and figuring out how to neuter or even get rid of them so that interpersonal conflicts are minimized. This task may be never ending, but she dedicates herself to it nonetheless.

Roandriana does publicly practice Khodaism, though it has been often said that she does not appear particularly dedicated to it, or at the very least does not understand the significance of the faith. In fact, she does partake willingly in Khodaist practices, but has not abandoned her past beliefs, and remains quite superstitious. She is not particularly skilled in most areas of magic, but nonetheless practices the craft on occasion, relying mostly on her childhood memories and trial and error to do so. Out of all her magical endeavors, her greatest successes have been in potion-making and the creation of animate clay figurines, though they have never been much more than simple pawns that can hobble around and perform tasks for her. Though she regards her rituals as important, she approaches the practices of magic more as hobby than as work, and so progresses slowly outside of the few areas where she has a strong foundation and interest in the matter.

Backstory: Little is known about Roandriana’s days before coming to Bhadristan, and is somewhat avoidant of royal historians who try to learn more from her. Little more is known of her childhood than what has been coaxed out of Roandriana by royal historians.

“My early years,” Roandriana has recounted, “I remember with little clarity. It is like a dream—something which is not real in this time and place. I was born on an island far from this land, in the capital city of a great kingdom that ruled the highlands. My father dealt in agriculture, handling shipments from great rice paddies of slaves. We were Hova, in that place and time. We resided outside of the City of the Thousand, but visited often. I was the eldest of my siblings, so I recall…Three of them. I had two brothers and two sisters. Yes, that’s correct, I believe. I will not speak the names of my family, for I am dead to them now and I do not wish to pull those who are dead so far from their graves.

I was a young girl, too young to marry, too young to leave home, you see. I would watch over my siblings as my mother saw to the home when my father was out working. That was the way of things, often, but one day it was not just workers in the fields. Soldiers from the Princes of the Many Ports came. These men had not come for conquest, like how my people had come to the Highlands. They came for slaves, to take and sell to the merchants that come to their ports. My caste was above slaves, but invaders are not so picky, are they? In any case, my mother, I believe, was cast down. My siblings were able to hide, but I was perhaps foolish and tried to help my mother. I recall, one of them spoke of my face. They said it was pretty, and took me with the slaves they seized from our farm.

From there, we traveled to a port city. My name comes from that journey. I do not use my old name, for it died with me when I left. Roandriana was once a nickname, a mockery given by the men I was traveling with, but now I have found victory in it, seeing my position now. Regardless, I was sold to a merchant who never told me his name. I starved in the brig of a ship, in chains, with many others. My eyes grew accustomed to the darkness, my stomach to the burn of hunger, and my lips to the lack of water.

It was an eternity, in my mind, before we arrived at port. It was a great port; I believe it was the port of Gopurat. There, I was held for auction, still but a young girl. As it was written in the skies, it seems, I was happened upon by the local governor. He purchased me and brought me to his home, where I was placed under the care of one of his daughter’s tutors. I could not speak Ardu, or any other language known well in these lands, for that matter. The woman, who I still know only by the name Teacher, saw to it that I learned only the most proper Ardu through vigorous drilling. I was well fed and well-groomed, and as this kind but stringent woman watched me grow older, the tutelage grew more intense, for she said to me “You are to be a gift to the Emperor from the governor when you come of age. When that day comes, you must be ready.”

After my first menstruation, she doubled-down once again, saying “You are yet not ready. Your speech is facile and your smile insincere.” And so we continued. She taught me to read, so that I might learn proper diction even while she was occupied and so that I could study scriptures on my own. I was brought before a priest, tested on Khoda’s words, inspected, and told I was “Sufficient” with a disinterested shrug. I was only told that I had done well that next year. One day, as she examined me, looked at every detail of my skin, measured every part of my body, tested my manners in every way imaginable, Teacher’s stern voice turned gentle.

“My dear, you may yet in this lifetime be a worthy gift for the Emperor, may peace be upon him.” Those were the kind words left with me before I was returned to the governor. He sent me to his wife, who inspected me once more with the help of her sister. I was, they said, finally a suitable wife.

We journeyed together to Khusraubad at the earliest opportunity.”

It is said that Jahanagir Shah received Roandriana warmly, though it was soon decided that she would make an excellent wife for the young Alamgir Khan, due to her beauty and quiet demeanor. Until shortly before Alamgir ascension, it was believed that Roandriana was to be Empress when Alamgir ascended to the throne. However, after some time of fruitless consummation, it became clear that something was awry in the bedroom. As Alamgir had other consorts, the problem was eventually determined to be with Roandriana. A court physician determined Roandriana to be barren, though she still remained Alamgir’s primary consort for a time, for in the time surrounding his father’s death, it was unwise to display weakness, such as a barren wife.

Once Alamgir’s position was secured, however, the state of affairs could not remain. Roandriana was demoted to the rank of Princess—still among the Emperor’s favored wives, but no longer at such a high rank as the one she was previously intended to reach. Soon after, the previous Amira-e-Haram was sacked after being caught conspiring to overthrow the Emperor and replace him with one of the pretenders. In order to avoid another similar incident, Roandriana was placed in the position of Amira-e-Haram, for it was believed that she would remain unproblematic and trustworthy to the Emperor due to her barren womb and apparent lack of ambition.

As the Amira-e-Haram, Roandriana has largely lived up to this expectation, though she has personally surprised some in her competence. She keeps excellent records, and has on several occasions tipped Amir Kud off to potential troubles with pretenders. Under her, the harem has grown more quiet than it previously was, though the size of it still inevitably makes a lasting calm untenuous. Her work, while never done, is kept up with, and she has privately spoken with some sympathetic figures on the matter of purging the harem of the old Emperor’s wives and stripping away even some of the current Emperor’s consorts, if possible.
Strengths & Flaws:
Magic: Though by no means an expert in the craft, Roandriana is skilled in potion-making and has experimented with alchemy, crediting much of her success to her earrings, which she considers to be talismans.

Unsuspecting: Roandriana is misunderstood by many to be an inoffensive, easily ignored factor when making plans. She seems passive, unobtrusive, and is thus often underestimated. Secrets tend to slip out around her, even if she hasn’t used a truth potion. After all, who would worry about a barren Princess, unable to gain power without an heir?

Sangam Idol: Through natural looks and the strict regimen she endured as she grew up, Roandriana is widely considered to be a jewel in the Emperor’s harem, even as her barrenness has become somewhat common knowledge around court. To many, she is no more than a statue, a trophy, as it were, for the Emperor to hold around him. She is simply a feather in the Peacock Throne; many pretenders regard her more as a prize to be claimed than anything of notable threat.

Undervalued: Though Roandriana’s unsuspecting, shoulder-to-lean-on persona has its benefits, it also brings about its own share of problems. Those members of court who do not know better may miss vital information or valuable assistance through ignoring Roandriana, and there is little that she can do to acquire the respect of those who do not respect her unless she wishes to reveal her hand.

Syncretism: Roandriana is not, strictly speaking, Khodaist. Or rather, she is not only a Khodaist. On her own time, she regularly breaks commandments surrounding the worship of Khoda, particularly when it comes to idolatry and worship of other gods. To her, he is merely one god incorporated into a pantheon that she has worshiped from youth. He is nothing more than the god of Bhidrastan, not of creation, or of other things. Though she does not express this opinion publicly, the notion that this is how she approaches religion has been suggested by some who have been able to observe her closely.

Updated the roster and added the IC. This is just the first post, but tomorrow I will write the second one. In meantime - feedback please!

The name of the RP is officially changed to Alamgirnama. This is because various Mughal Emperors IRL wise wrote autobiographies, which usually were named after the ruler + nama (example). Thus Alamgirnama = Book of Alamgir in persian.

Nation Name: Western Fardelshufflestein (WF for short)
RP SAMPLE: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=457546&p=39964251#p39964251
___________________
Character Name: Kazem Mirza ibn Farroukshiyar

House/Clan/Family: Farroukshiyar/Karlani

Religion: Khodaist

Age: 17

Gender: Male

Role/Occupation/Titles: Prince in the Crimson Citadel, Aspiring Advisor or Politician

Description: Kazem is a quiet, scholarly boy finally maturing into manhood. His voice, previously childlike and high-pitched, is now cracking as it descends into a rich tenor. He is short in stature, with a round face only just beginning to stubble and a head of straight black hair. His build is full without being muscular or overly slim. Dark eyes gleam over a sharp nose, and his lips are narrow and thin. He is not unattractive, but he certainly does not possess looks that merit any special attention.

As he lacks the commanding presence that seems to draw many to his more powerful brothers, he is not one with the natural ability to lead. Instead, he prefers to scheme from the background, calculating his next move based on the observed and postulated actions of others. He is not yet skilled in politics and deception, but perhaps some time spent active in his brother's court will hone those skills. As it is, Kazem is not overly conniving. Rather, he possesses an erudition that can make him seem as such were someone to pay any great attention to him. His discerning eye is quick to pick up the ulterior motives of others, or so he believes, and he knows when to hold his tongue and when to speak.

Naturally, his keen nature compels him to keep a journal which he writes in morning and night. He loves to scribble down his dreams upon awakening and his observations before retiring to bed regardless of the hour; his darkest secrets, however, he refrains from jotting down. He scrawls in an alphabet of his own invention, which he conceived first when he was eleven and has refined over the years. The original translations to the alphabet he keeps in a hidden drawer, as by now he knows his letters by heart. He has a propensity for foreign languages and speaks four tongues, including his native one. His friends, and few he has, regard him as a genius, but he sees himself merely as an amateur scholar.

A pious Khodaist, Kazem regards the doctrines of his faith as unbreakable law. To kill, to cheat, to use Khoda's name in vain are as abhorrent to him as going a day without writing in his journal, if not more so. He keeps a copy of the Vendidad, pages worn from years of use, in his room in a revered spot, and he follows ritual purifications on the rare occasions he is required to do so. He knows he is flawed, but he is not so zealous as to seek purging his body of its flaws to an extreme extent. Fallibility is in everyone; the perfect man, to Kazem, will never exist. He can only seek to become the best version of himself and hope that that is enough. He disapproves of pagans, but he will not spit upon them or overtly insult them; instead, he will regard them with a cold eye and be on his way. He has learnt to deal with violence through silence, and as such he is known to be adverse to provoking others.

Kazem regards servants, soldiers, and commoners as beneath him, but he does not abuse them or treat them with disrespect. He may be cold and distant toward them, but this is how he tends to act toward others of equal and exceeding rank. As long as they stay out of his way and perform their duties without fuss, Kazem will ignore the servants and slaves and they him. He does not turn a condescending eye upon them; his expression remains indifferent, and his directions are not given with an authoritative tone. They are stated coolly and without emotion.

Intriguingly or perhaps inevitably given his childhood, Kazem has little to no desire to become Emperor. He instead wishes to work under and for Alamgir, not necessarily because he is a supporter of Alamgir but because he is opposed to any of Alamgir's most pronounced rivals from seizing the Throne. He thinks that he can use his intellect to help his oldest brother in navigating the court, though Kazem certainly has much to learn about the ways of the Crimson Citadel.

Backstory: Kazem was born one of many princes in the late Emperor's harem to a princess named Shiva. His mother was 17 when she birthed him, a sickly infant whom the physicians believed would not survive. Yet survive he did, and he gained strength and lived through those treacherous early years of life. He didn't know his father, and in truth he never felt the need to get close to him. Growing up in the harem, he had his innumerable half siblings and the women who cared for and instructed him. There was no room for the man who had sired him. While he made friends with a few of his brothers, many of them loved to taunt him. They thought his mannerisms and interests pathetic and unmanly, for as a child he loved embroidery and sewing. The ones more inclined to the traditionally masculine arts of fighting and war strategy would call him a sissy and refused to call him by his name but by a moniker used for girls. It didn't matter that Kazem was as smart as they were and just as politically invested; his aversion to the art of war made him a target. It was thus that Kazem grew to despise the needle and turned his attention to languages. After all, he excelled in that subject, and he might as well make something of himself. Perhaps the brother who became Emperor would appoint him as an interpreter.

His best friend was Youssef, his half-brother only a month younger than Kazem. Youssef was as studious as Kazem, as fascinated by languages and literature as he. He was a round-faced boy even shorter than Kazem and a tad plump, his distinguishing trait being his idleness. He loved to sit and watch others do things for him, and he had little ambition beyond reading but no desire to make a career out of it. He'd spend his whole life this way, he figured. His mother was a concubine, not a princess, and he had no real aspirations of sitting upon the Peacock Throne. He was lonely, for he found no one else his age enjoyed books as much as he did other than Kazem. When they had their first conversation about a story when they were eight, a friendship was struck. When together, they discussed at length passages from the Vendidad and other works, poked fun at the brothers who so often berated Kazem and other physically weak boys. After all, soldiery was not an old man's profession. Youssef liked to say they'd grow to be old and maybe outlive the next Emperor, but youth was something Kazem was afraid to outgrow. He didn't want to be old; he didn't want to become weaker than he already was.

By adolescence, his perception of masculinity was greatly skewed. He admired the shapely forms of the soldiers, their solid muscles rippling beneath their skin, their full beards, their square jaws. Yet he desired to become anything but the perfect specimen of a warrior-prince. He feared that he would never be a true man, for he did not fit what he had built up in his mind to be the standard of manhood. He could marvel at feats of strength, feel a stirring in his abdomen and chest at the sight of men with bare chests, yet he could not find his destiny in the world of steel and blood. At thirteen, he was the height of his eleven-year-old brothers; he cared not for horseback riding or sparring, though he could hold his own with the Katar. He wanted to drink it in from afar, observe these feats, but he did not want to participate in them.

At this age, his brothers were talking about girls, or starting to. Kazem engaged in those conversations, but girls held no interest for him. No girl could compare to the beautiful shape of the male, the muscular chests and strong thighs of the soldier-slaves. He thought something was wrong with him; he fretted he had been meant to be born a girl, but that he'd wound up in a boy's form instead. How could he be both attracted to men and a male himself? But he sensed, through many hours of struggle spend on sleepless nights, that he was as masculine as the guards who patrolled the citadel, the droves of half-brothers with penchants for war. The thought sobered and terrified him. He'd never heard of anyone attracted to his own sex, yet here he was, a boy who liked other boys. He finally understood why, or at least partially why, he never desired to obtain the office of his father: he never wanted to lie with a woman for as long as he lived. He kept this revelation to himself, fearful someone would call him a deviant or a pagan although he was a firm Khodaist. He had never taken Khoda's name in vain or cheated anyone; surely Khoda would accept him. Surely there was nothing wrong with him. If he didn't tell anyone, if he held this secret close to his heart, nothing would come of it. He could work as a courtier, and no one would pay him any heed.

Growing up, Kazem didn't know the prince who would become Alamgir. Indeed, he could count on one hand the number of times he'd interacted with the Khan before he became the Emperor. He didn't think of Alamgir as his direct kin, for he hadn't been raised alongside the Heir; instead, he saw Alamgir as a distant being elevated to a position somewhat above the rest of humanity. Yet he was surely human; he had, like Kazem, been born of man. Kazem imagined Alamgir would be fond of a scholarly half-brother. After all, his role as a commander meant he had little time for political matters, matters Kazem was eager to study. He wanted to be an officer of his brother or perhaps an advisor, but he knew he was not yet skilled enough; perhaps, then, he could become an apprentice of one of the new Emperor's allies.

Strengths & Flaws: As mentioned previously, Kazem is adept at learning languages. He speaks four of them, the first being his native tongue and the other three having been learned, and while he is perhaps not fluent in them, he is passably skilled. His passion for linguistics translates into a curiosity to learn of the outside world; he is fascinated by how a language is put together, what it sounds like, the ways it's written. As such, he is literate and able to write in the languages he speaks, an accomplishment achieved through years of careful study.

Kazem is also good at observing other people, and thus he can glean their mannerisms and sometimes their intentions quite well. In this way, he fits naturally into a political environment. His ability makes him a strong judge of character as well as a bit of a cynic, but he does not come off as abrasive, just cautious and a little distant. He is on the patient side, meaning that he is slower to anger than a typical seventeen-year-old boy.

However, his inexperience in the political realm is to his disadvantage. He does not yet know the nuances of the court or who is for or against the Emperor; he cannot tell what plots encircle the Throne because he has not met many of the politicians involved. Furthermore, he is not an eloquent speaker or charismatic individual. As such, it is difficult for him to establish credibility beyond his title. He comes off as passive and aloof, with some assuming him to be a pushover and others full of himself, though the reality is somewhere in between the two.

Kazem is not of great physical strength, though he has long outgrown the propensity for illness that dominated his early childhood. He is poor at sparring and weaponry exempting the katar, which he is skilled enough to use and perhaps duel with. His tendency to be easily physically overpowered often leads to him yielding before suffering great injury, for he considers self-preservation more important than pride. This has landed him in nigh-insurmountable scenarios more than once with some of his brothers. He is a slow runner and woefully uncoordinated, attributes that from birth confined him to fields unrelated to physical prowess.

Out of necessity, he tends to be secretive. He fears the things he carries deep within his heart would condemn him if discovered, so he is closed-off to protect himself. He is not unwilling to trust others with lesser fears, but his aloof countenance and sparse way with words make him less than approachable.

Accepted!

I need to point out that in Khodaism, just like in Islam or Judaism, homosexuality is a capital crime. I wonder perhaps if Kazem would believe that as long as he keeps his urges to himself and does not act upon them, he will be accepted?

Of course I need to point out that people are not perfect: so a character being a devout khodaist and then doing something that is utterly forbidden is actually an interesting one and one that has my support.

I wrote him on the assumption it was taboo; he doesn't understand how it can be so wrong when it's who he is, but he's smart enough to keep it hidden because he doesn't think others will agree with him.

I wrote him on the assumption it was taboo; he doesn't understand how it can be so wrong when it's who he is, but he's smart enough to keep it hidden because he doesn't think others will agree with him.

I like it then. I will make the second part of the OP soon, beginning a feast celebrating the victory.

You all in meantime are welcome to write what your characters were doing during the battle - even if it was just watching.

Awesome. I'm thinking of showing my boi waking up and journaling, since he's not exactly the type to be sent into battle. What would he do if he were able to go to the court--whomst would he interact with?

I need to point out that your character while not being sent into battle, would certainly be in the war camp.

So far Alagamir 's reign has been one war after another. As the result people have been joking that "he made his war camp his capital". Whenever he goes to war he brings his entire court and harem with himself - which results in mess of epic proportions, as the number of other people in the military camp equals, if not dwarfs, his own (due to Karlani obsession with numbers usually bloated by conscripts, criminals and various tribes seeking plunder) army.

At this point almost the entire court is in Alamgir's war camp. I plan to write a post where a feast celebrating the victory would be held. All of our characters would meet on it.

I also wrote in my post that various non - military officials and couriters were watching the battle from afar.

Noted. I shall incorporate that into my post.

Out of curiosity, what languages would Kazem speak?

The original tribes spoke Vendidadi, which is still preserved in the Empire for religious purposes.Today it serves a similar role to Latin, despite being out of use in daily lives.

The administration of the Empire is carried out in Ärdu, a mish - mash of Vendidadi and local languages that formed in the military camps (ärdu - camp). It is an official language of the court, administration and recently, higher arts.

Local people may may use their own languages in addition to ärdu, but all higher classes learn ärdu as second language.

Nation Name: Ovstylap
RP SAMPLE: Previous iteration of the Alamgir Chronicles
___________________
Character Name:
House/Clan/Famlilly: Erbir Mirza ibn Farroukshiyar.
Religion: Khodaism
Age: 38
Gender: Male
Role/Occupation/Titles: Vizier, Zamindar, Mirza
Description: Erbir is a well-built man of a common height to most Karlani nobles. He is particularly remarkable for the brightness of the green flecks in his hazel eyes, and always keeps a well-groomed beard which frames a square beard. Often comfortable in practical clothing which does not necessarily match the heights of court fashion, he carries himself with an air of confidence, which is matched by his physical strength. He is of sound mind and body, used to many hours and days spent in travel or in tents, riding, marching, fighting, not often idling in court.
Backstory: Erbir Mirza ibn Farroukshiyar, son of the late Emperor and one of his concubines, and one of many half-brothers to the new Emperor (long may he reign). Born into the hands of a mother jealous of other wives and concubines, and an uncaring father (who had many other more senior children), Erbir was raised for the first few years of his life by various servants of the harem, or even by some of the lowest concubines. By the age of six springs and a quarter, he had been adopted into the family of a Marzban living in the east of the country, along the borders of the Karlani Empire. As a young, and very junior Mirza, he was trained in the ways of noble warfare- in the use of lance, scimitar, and bow, from both horseback and dismounted. He quickly became a fan of playfighting and wrestling with his adoptive brothers, and had a hearty appetite as he entered his teenage years.

He grew quickly, and became a keen rider, often accompanying the Marzban's cavalry, and learning how soldiers live and talk. They adopted the 'little Marzban' or the 'Angriest son of a concubine' or the 'Mirza of horses' and continued to train him. By the age of 15, he had seen the deaths of men in battle, and had already seen his first executions a number of years before that. Towards the last quarter of his 16th year, he fought in a battle against invading rival tribesmen. At 18, he returned to the court for a year, seeking patronage following the death of his adoptive father. There was great competition with his other half-brothers, and other young nobles however, and instead he accompanied an imperial campaign against rebels first in deserts west of the capital, and then in the southern jungles. Campaigning for around a year against various rebellions, Erbir began to undertake his first major responsibilies, and was taken under the wing of a cavalry commander by the name of Dyutit Thakkar.

Accompanying and learning from Dyutit Thakkar, Erbir earned renown at the battle of Janakran against pagan rebels, leading a party infiltrating through the sewers of the town to assault the gatehouse for waiting forces. After the battle however, he suffered from a severe infection which almost claimed his life, and he returned to the capital to recover. There he began a belated education, and took particular pleasure in poetry, accounting, and military strategy. Having gained the attention of his father at long last, Erbir, now 24, joined an imperial force in the north, waging war against the independent principalities there. He commanded several raids into foreign territory, and fought in a number of cavalry skirmishes. A year later, Erbir was part of a large force of around 6000 cavalry which suppressed a mutiny by 18000 pagan sepoys. Following this, he again returned to the capital, where he finally took his first wife Dhanya Ambani, the first daughter of a relatively low noble family.

At 28, now with two children, and having just married his second wife Elisa Nayak, Erbir was appointed by his father to lead one of three columns in a brutal suppression of the Chela sect in the north of the country. Several pagan rebellions in the northern regions were suppressed by the imperial armies, during which Erbir was responsible for the fall of Rafidesar (see Strengths), and a number of smaller settlements.

At 30, one of the most potentially dangerous rebellions was led by Zamindar Arnav Munim, governor of the prosperous Dahari Subah, who had allied himself with a confederacy of pagan rebels, and the northern independent principalities. Notably, several other Mirzas, dissatisfied and jealous at their lack of promotion, renown, or prestige, had joined the rebellion. The campaign was long, arduous, brutal, and remarkable for the number of atrocities carried out by both sides. Two years later, and Erbir had gone from being the seventh in command to the overall commander, and oversaw the storming of Tirupur, following an aggressive pursuit of a rout following the battle of Gadwani. For his efforts in these campaigns, and the mopping up of the rebels, Erbir was appointed Zamindar of Dahari Subah.

Over the last few years, Erbir has overseen the recovery of Dahari Subah, reforming its taxation, promoting religious tolerance, and an aggressive repression of banditry, treachery, and petty crime. He has continued to fight in various imperial campaigns Most recently, Erbir contributed several thousand soldiers to the Imperial campaign against the rebels around Barwala. Whilst the main contingents marched on the city itself, Erbir's forces secured the hinterland, taking two market towns, a castle, and three forts, whilst also routing a number of small, separated relief contingents. After overseeing the return home of his troops, and attending the celebrations in Khusraubad, he found himself dealing with continued uprisings and battles. When the Mirza Bheem Tripathi's plot to defect to Sher Shah Bari was uncovered by the former Vizier, Farhad Mirza, Erbir was despatched, and was able to destroy the rebel forces, and capture Bheem Tripathi. The man however had taken poison, and when the doctors with the army agreed unanimously that he would not survive, Erbir publicly denounced his treachery and beheaded him.

Farhad Mirza, the old Vizier, was jealous of Erbir, and suspicious of his apparent loyalty. Ultimately, feeling threatened by the growing autonomy of Erbir's Subah, that of Dahari, Farhad would despatch a group of assassins whilst Erbir was in a drunken stupor following a particularly brutal battle against rebels. Erbir's guards were killed by these men, but he awoke to the sound of combat. The assassins had been promised that their families would be enriched beyond imagination, and knew that they would die in the attempt. Awaking, completely drunken, Erbir threw the camp follower he had with him into the path of one assassin, whilst another threw herself at another, quickly realising that she would be killed as a witness by the assassins- she did not know they did not seek to escape with their lives. Erbir was able to throw a sheet over the third assassin, and would kill the man before he could escape from the sheets. Arming himself, Erbir fought off the remaining attackers, and captured two alive with the help of nearby troops who came to their assistance. Both camp followers died of their wounds. The assassins would not survive the ordeals they had over the next day, though Erbir would uncover the truth.

Erbir would go to the capital, and lay his accusations before the Emperor in view of the court, and present his scars as evidence, as well as a signed confession. Though this could not necessarily be seen as a complete amount of proof, Farhad was disgraced, and the Emperor had to make a decision (OOC: you can decide this). Ultimately, Farhad was removed from power, and Erbir was able to assume the role. He appointed Umar Asher, a senior member of his Diwan, to be Zamindar in his name. As Vizier, Erbir would prove to be very hand's on, and interpreted his role as the Emperor's right hand man differently to the former. Rather than lean in and whisper advice, Erbir would gladly ride out and conduct the jobs that were just beneath that of the Padishah Emperor. Where Alamgir had to be diplomatic in court, yet needed words to be said, Erbir would deliver them. Where in public Alamgir would be magnanimous and merciful, Erbir would be ruthless and direct.
Effectively then, Erbir would carry out the Emperor's will- where the Amir Bakhshi would carry out one campaign, and Alamgir were at court, then Erbir would carry it out. In terms of the bureacracy, he has attempted to hold them to account and make spending more efficient. Amongst those nobles who have slackened in their duties and obligations to the Emperor, Erbir has pursued them.
In short, having been Vizier for only a couple of years, Erbir has served the Peacock Throne effectively and loyally, but has likely upset a good many in the court, and given his distance from the court- he is less aware of the intrigue.

Strengths & Flaws:
Loyal to the core
Erbir served the late emperor well, and it is widely known that he has no intention of usurping the throne from the new emperor, his half-brother. Instead, his ambitions are more localised, but great nonetheless. Hopefully his known loyalty will keep him out of any conspiracies that he is involved in a faction to usurp Emperor Alamgir.

Proven Commander
Against the independent principalities of the north, against rebels of various motivations, and against the initial Chela revolts, Erbir has proven himself an adept commander, leading his soldiers from the front, and refusing to take on the aura of arrogance that some other commanders do.

Reputation as an Honorable Negotiator
Erbir has put a fortress, a castle, two towns, and a dozen villages to the sword. Yet he has also taken a number of towns and castles without a massacre. As such, Erbir has become a leader who is known to retain his pledges when negotiating with hostile or neutral parties. His wrath however when another breaks their agreements with him is something to be feared- the capture of Rafidesar saw the rebel commander promise a full surrender of the town after Erbir refused for the non-combatants to be allowed safe passage.
Offered a bribe, he agreed to have the garrison march out, unarmed. However, instead, many civilians were expulsed, enabling the town to potentially survive a long siege. As such, the civilians were left to fend for themselves between the besieging army and the settlement for three days, whereupon the remainder were used as human shields to allow an advance upon the walls. The garrison ultimately killed their commander, and surrendered, but each officer was executed, and every man flogged in retaliation.

Personal Prowess
Although not in the absolute prime of his youth, Erbir continues to train his body with regular sports and weapons practice. He as such has retained his strength, and is able to defend himself against individual attackers.

Mixed Characteristics:
A Romantic or a Womaniser?
Erbir has written a number of love poems, as well as a small treatise on retaining the love of your sweetheart. Although some have mocked these works, others have commented that they reveal an element of the romantic in Erbir. However, he has also gotten involved in a number of affairs- whilst he has only two wives himself, he has been rumoured to have caused multiple women to commit adultery. On the one hand, this puts him in violation of Khodaist Commandments, but on the other hand few would wish to publicize this, giving Erbir a slight hand in blackmailing a few of the people of the Court. Nonetheless, jealousy and a desire for revenge could well cause Erbir to have enemies aplenty.

Somewhat out of touch with Court
From dress and fashion, to being familiar with the latest intrigues, faction dynamics, or popular academic and cultural discussions, Erbir is stepping into the unknown. Having been away from Court, either managing his own Subah, or on campaign, he has ended up somewhat out of the loop. Although on the one hand this may be a cause of embarrassment, or cause a little social friction, as well as leading him to be unaware of some of the intrigues and networks at play, it has also meant that he hasn't drawn any additional targets on himself, or made any additional enemies recently.

Weaknesses
Immoderate Drinker
Although he is not an alcoholic, in recent years and months Erbir has become somewhat more reckless, particularly with the passing of the late Emperor, in terms of his drinking habits. Whilst he rarely drinks alone, he has caused himself to be something of a spark to gunpowder if he drinks too much- this may lead to him causing provocations, or revealing more than he wishes to. It has also to an extent emboldened his pursuit of causing affairs.

Between the factions
Having been away from Court, and himself having a mixture of ambitions and qualities, Erbir finds himself without the protection and community of a court faction. This makes him susceptible to approaches from multiple factions, but also limits his ability to keep up with court affairs. For instance, he has often argued for his own autonomy as a Zamindar, which alienates him from some of those who prefer centralization, yet at the same time has often had to deal with rebellious Zamindars himself- autonomy has to have its limits, unless it is for him. This mixture of ideals and desires add a perception of either untrustworthiness, selfishness, or unpredictability to the man. Certainly not ideal for many of the larger Court factions.

Adverse to Informers
Having made his own previous use of spies, turncoats, deserters, and the like on campaign; Erbir finds the use of such tactics distasteful or otherwise problematic in a court sense. As such, he has a rather thin network of whisperers and informers, because he distrusts recruiting new ones, believing they may be in the pay or employ of others. This reinforces the possibility of him missing out on information. And in the court of the Padishah, information is often power...

Fief Description Dahari Subah is a province a few hundred miles to the north of the capital, and is on the perimeter of the core lands. Its demographics include around 23% Karlani, with the remainder of various other ethnic groups. In terms of religion however, around 43% of the population are Khodaists, although a significant number of these are recent converts following the campaigns just three-five years ago.

Dahari Subah's four most important locations are as follows: Firstly, the capital Tirupur, which is at a major junction of rivers, and is an administrative and trading center. A second major trading city is Bandipur, which lies on the south-eastern part of the Province, and is a particular center of the spice trade, as well as overseeing one of the largest bridges in the Karlani empire. The money made through charging tolls on trade caravans traversing the bridge, and for larger river-crossing ships which need the central drawbridges raised, provides a significant income. Third is the 'White Citadel' of Razchi, in the north of the Province, where the primary military forces are concentrated.
Finally are the Khuzpur mines, where silver and iron are mined- in the very south-western part of the province, in the foothills of the mountains. The silver is directly sent to the Imperial Coffers, whilst a lot of the iron is used to make weapons and armour for the Imperial army. As such, the province receives reduced taxes.

Dahari Subah however, due to its moderate rainfall, humidity, and broadly moderate temperatures, as well as substantial irrigation networks, make it a primarily agricultural center. Most of the people work in rural jobs. Ginger, Mace, Nutmeg, Cardammon, Pepper, Cumin, Chillies, and Cinnamon are grown in the region in terms of spices, whilst Sorghum, Rice, Pulses, Chickpeas, Peas, Onions, and coffee are all grown in the area. Smaller amounts of tobacco and sugarcane are also grown, though the sugar grows relatively poorly. A small amount of opium is also produced in the region, despite it being illegal.

Major imports include cotton, silks and other fabrics, livestock, horses, elephants, and camels, whilst the above goods are exported.

Military Description Some 4400 infantry and 1800 cavalry are kept raised in the province, primarily for internal security, garrison duties, and the escort of trade caravans. Upon the summons, corps of 3800 Karlani horse, 2600 non-Karlani lancers, and 6000 sepoys can be called upon. There are only around 70 war elephants, and 40 transportable cannons available.

Edit: Regarding the military I will probably often write about Karlani horse- usually meaning horse-archers etc, and then lancers and sepoys will be usually termed as Dahari, as will garrison forces etc. Dahari will refer to troops raised from the population of Dahari province, and will probably usually refer to non-Karlani troops, though not necessarily non-Khodaist. Unless otherwise specified, all troops are loyal to Erbir, raised from Dahari Subah, or hired by Erbir, though if any contingents of troops are assigned to Erbir's command, that will be mentioned.

Dahari infantry are typically equipped with bows, rather than muskets. Approximately 30-55% of infantry forces have muskets, with 40-60% having bows, and the remainder explicitly being melee troops. These numbers might change depending on the task of the forces. The inspiration is Ottoman Infantry in Medieval 2 etc- the idea being to loose several volleys of arrows before closing in melee.

This RP looks really interesting. I am from India myself and I can tell that the Karlani's are based on the Great Mughals. I will like to sign up for this RP soon.

Factbook Entry: The Kafrs

The term kafr means "unbeliever" and is used by Khodaists to describe those not following the laws of Khoda.

All Kafrs worship the fallen devas. The kingdom of Irbis is feudal in nature - t.m. that Irbis grants a fallen deva a portion of territory to rule over. Devas establish their presence by means of idols, which upon being charged become indwelt by a fallen deva. The more worship a deva receives, the more powerful it gets - and it will use this power to corrupt humans under it. The devas frequently fight over lands and worshippers, but always unite when Khoda makes a move.

The pagan groups vary in theology and fallen devas they worship, but certain practices and beliefs remain common. The foundation of Pagan religions are found in four holy books called "agamas" (hence pagan religion is often known as "agamism"). The books describe an order of devas and rituals dedicated to them.

Pagans believe in existence of impersonal, pantheistic god called "Brahman". This god is not a person, but rather a "force" that can be harnessed. Many pagans believe Devendra to be physical manifestation of Barhman and use the two names as synonym, and hence Karna's title Brahmaji (son of Brahman).

Most powerful of the devas is Devendra, who is in actuality Irbis himself. He is portrayed as "king of the devas" who rules from Mt. Meru. Pagans attribute to him power over weather and storms through his weapon - the vajra. He is portrayed as riding on four tusked white elephant. The pagans attribute to him slaying the primordial dragon of chaos named Ahi (which in reality was done by Khoda, but which Irbis claims for himself to win followers). All pagan groups worship him. Charudhara is his consort, worshipped by the chelas in particular. She is portrayed as many armed goddess of love and war, infamous for temple prostitution employed in her worship.

The other popular gods are Pavaka (fire), Kala (death & underworld), Anila (wind, son of Devenra) and Haoma (goddess of drink making people immoral). The list of goes into millions, but while pagans may pray to many devas, there will always be one who will be dominant over a particular territory.

All pagans have also also certain common concepts. The first one is reincarnation. All pagans believe that soul is reborn in another body upon it's death. This belief is the basis of pagan social order, which does not acknowledge equality of humans. The humans are divided into four varnas (castes) - brahimins, kshatriys, vaishyas and shudras - and where a man is born is determined by his karma (merit) accumulated in past life. Only if a man performs his caste duties well he is given a chance to reincarnate as a member of the higher caste, and social mobility is seen as threat to the divine order. Pagan dynasties frequently use the pretext of reincarnation of a past ruler to legitimise their authority.

All Pagans believe that four goals of life are artha (wealth), kama (desire), dharma (righteousness) and moksha (liberation). Due to influence of fallen devas, pagans practice cult of self-pleasing. Sexual deviances, excessive parties, human sacrifice, black magic and other disgusting occurrences are a daily activity in pagan societies and commonly tolerated. Shudras are discriminated against and brought up in a spirit of passivity that makes them indifferent to authority. In areas under Karlani control the most disgusting pagan customs were suppressed, but are still practised in secret.

A very important piece of pagan culture is an epic poem called "Mahavrisha". The poem tells the story of rivalry between two sons of Vrisha (the first human ruler, from whose name Pagans name the area where the story is set), their rivalry for hand of beautiful princess Ambalika and the civil war that erupts when one of the brothers kidnaps the princess. The poem is extremely popular, read often even by Khodaists, and forms basis of education of the upper classes.

Factbook Entry: The Chelas

The word "chela" means "disciple". The sect that was known as chelas was started stared by Surjan Singh, who claimed to have received a vision of Charudhara. The goddess told him that over the time, the agamas became corrupt, which resulted in people of vrisha losing capability to resist the Karlani invaders. She told Guru Surjan of necessity of bhakti - a personal devotion to her. If a person successfully performed the devotion to her, she would intercede for the person to her husband, allowing said person to instantly attain moksha regardless of the person's caste.

The new sect was egalitarian in nature, and energised the pagan lower classes. Despite hypocrisy existing among it's leaders since the beginning, the sect taught pacifism and initiated a successful campaign of non-violent resistance against both the Karlani empire and the feudal system. Ironically, the first persecution of the sect arose not from the Khodaists but from local pagan kshatriyas, who became afraid of the new sect's potential to damage the social order.

The sect grew too large to be ignored and at one point, it's fifth guru, Keerat Singh, was arrested and sent to the capital. When brought before the Emperor to be judged, the blasphemed Khoda, causing the emperor to order the guru to be boiled alive. The Emperor then unleashed a great persecution of the sect, which caused it's militarisation. The last two gurus spent their time fighting the Karlani as leaders of popular uprising.

The basis of Chela religion is contained in the First Scriptrue - a holy book believed to be the "Eight Guru". Chelas worship the book, believing it to be a living being - it officiates wedding and is placed in seat of honour during political debates.

Charudhara is the main deva worshipped by Chelas, who restrict their worship purely to her, her husband and couple lower ranked deities in service of their goddess. Their goddess is portrayed as epitome of perfect character, mercy, peace and forgiveness, who will accept anyone. Despite that, Chelas have no problem killing unbelievers, believing it to be an act of mercy allowing killed the party to be reincarnated as a chela. They also practice "liberation ceremonies" in which a person is "liberated" from the cycle of reincarnation by a ritual human sacrifice.

The community of chelas is known as "Khalsa". Upon joining the community, the individual takes surname "Singh" (lion) for men or "Kaur" (Princess) for women. Chelas have a strict code of dress, known as "five k" - kesh (unshorn hair), kangha (a comb for the kesh, usually wooden), kara (a bracelet, usually made of iron or steel), kachera (a white undergarment), and kirpan (a small curved sword of any size, shape or metal). The life in chela community is very strict and given to extreme discipline, although the leadership frequently breaks it's own rules, whereas the lower ranks are required to obey the rules without question.

Factbook Entry: The Phansingars

"Phansingars" refers to an organised pagan assassin cult. The cult's name is derived from a kind of garrotte it's members often use. Phansingars worship Kala - the deva of underworld and death - and believe they have a religious duty to kill people in his name.

Over time, the cult turned into a professional assassin group with religious underpinnings. For a right price, they will get rid of anyone their client desires. Due to that, they enjoy unofficial toleration by many Karlani nobles, who often employ their services.
