Total military size 54,000 Standing, 12,400 Naval personnel
Breakdown of army

The Roman Army is made of three Factions, each state within the Triumvirate Nation being given dominion over one of the factions.

The Legion (La Legione) - The Primary offensive force of the Nation. Made up of 32,000 soldiers, 5000 of which make up cavalry regiments, 10,000 make up artillery regiments, and the remaining 17,000 are infantry regiments, conscripted from each of the three states, under the Dominion of the Kingdom of Naples. If war is declared, the Legion is the first to be mobilized and as such is equipped largely with the newest weaponry produced for the military. The Roman Military is partially modernized. With La Legione regiments being the only faction to receive Modern Firearms at this time, including a single Rifleman regiment.

The Swords of Christ (Le Spade di Cristo) - The defenders of the Nation under the dominion of the Papacy. With 10,000 soldiers, Le Spade is charged with defense of ports and borders. They are the wall that meets invaders to allow La Legione to mobilize. They are the most well supplied of the three Factions, though their supply is of largely outdated surplus weaponry. Meant to be a quantity over quality first line of defense.

The spears of Venice (Le Lance di Venezia) - The spears, made up of 14,000 men under Venice's dominion, are primarily a reserve force. The least well equipped, and the least well trained. They are stationed across Rome as ways for replacing lost manpower within regiments in times of great need. As well as acting as last lines of defense for some of the major cities within the Nation. Rome having the largest number of soldiers from the Spears of any place in the nation.

Breakdown of navy
The Roman Triumvirate Navy Is large, made up of two fleets. Both fleets fall under the de facto dominion of The King of Naples. Though de jure are meant to be under control of the Triumvirate equally.

Western Fleet - Patrols, and battles in the western Mediterranean, primarily protecting trade routes to Rome and Naples.

Currency The Piastra
Major import/export partners Britain (by way of Egypt), The Ottoman Empire, France, Genoa, Morocco, Iberia, some HRE states.
Major Domestic Issues Protestant and Christian clashes are common. The dominant nature of the Kingdom of Naples within the Triumvirate government causes strife with the lesser two states of Venice and the Papacy.
Major Foreign Issues the Triumvirate claims all historic Roman land, though currently only presses on italian lands, namely Milan, Genoa, Parma, and Corsica.

History

In the course of the Protestant Reformation, Venice a republic built on a significant trade city, saw widespread adoption of the new ideas such as Lutheranism and Calvinism. This reformation even expanded into the Doge of Venice. The wider adoption within the republic, lead to growing animosity between it and its neighbor the Papal States. towns along the border between the nations saw regular clashes between soldiers and citizens alike. These clashes soon became skirmishes between soldiers. Which by August 1751, had broken out into all out war. The Kingdom of Naples, whose staunchly Roman Catholic king Charles III, came to the aid of the Papal states by December of 1751, declaring war on Venice in aid to the Papacy. The resulting war was one of the Bloodiest in Italian history, killing almost 400,000 men lost between the three nations.

The devastation was felt among all three nations, and when King Charles III himself raised the victory banner in the City of Venice in 1753, it was as bitter sweet a victory as anyone had ever experienced. A meeting between the three nation's leaders, was dominated by Charles III. He berated both the Doge of Venice, and the Pope, calling them both blasphemers to the lord for causing such untold death and destruction. He in a moment of anger, declared that neither nation shall be independent any longer. This declaration was bound in the peace treaty, officially making the Papal States and Venice, vassals to Naples. Though, this proved to be untenable almost instantly. The Roman Catholic and the Protestants could not rightly agree to Neapolitan rule. So Charles III held a congress with the Pope and Doge once more in 1755. Here he declared, by suggestion of his advisors, a Triumvirate. One in which each of the three states would continue to exist as separate entities, but that would form a parliament of sixty officials as well as a Triumvirate executive congress. Twenty senators from each state, chosen by whichever method is desired by the governing body of the state, would represent each state. And the head of state, the doge of Venice, the Pope, and the King of Naples, would make up the Triumvirate. This system, has lead to a shaky peace among the three states. Allowing the people to believe that a semblance of self governance exists in this system. Though, the King of Naples continues to hold such significant sway and power among the Triumvirate congress as well as the parliament, that the de facto ruler of the Triumvirate of Rome, continues to be the King of Naples.

In 1770, Charles the III died in his sleep, handing the crown to his son Ferdinand I. In his first act as King of Naples, Ferdinand broke from his Father's tendency to allow religious freedoms, expelling Jesuits from Naples and using the Parliament and Triumvirate to do so in the rest of Rome as well. He has since spent his term as King boldly speaking claims on Italian lands that he believes rightly belong to the Triumvirate. And has begun the process of bolstering and modernizing his military forces across the Triumvirate.

Political Faction in Power Partei Bayern A monarchist faction seeking to strengthen Bavarian hegemony of Southern Germany.
Population 1.8 million
Religion Breakdown 87% Roman Catholic, 10% Protestant, 2% Jewish, 1% Others.
Public Goals Oppose Austrian hegemony in the Southern German States, preserve Bavarian sovereignty, improving the economy.
Private Goals Restoration of the Papal States as an independent nation state, conquest of Hapsburg territory.
Map Claims Bavaria, Württemberg and Baden

Total military size 40,000 full time soldiers 90,000 Territorial levy.
Breakdown of army The field army is based largely on compulsory military service, and a national guard with three classes was also developed (1st class: Reserve battalions of the Line regiments; 2nd class: Territorial army; 3rd class: Citizen levy).

Guard of the Electorate: The primary army of the Grand Electorate, comprising of around 25,000 Bavarian soldiers. Trained primarily by ex-Prussian officers and highly funded. The guard is loyal only to the Elector and serves as a deterrent to the Württemberger and Baden monarchs seeking independence from the Munich court; nowadays with revolutionary storms over Europe it also stays a symbol that the Ancien Régime will not go quietly into the night as the French had.

Elector's Army of Baden Comprised of around 5,000 men from its namesake of Baden, the force is primarily stationed on the Saalach river and around the border with Austria, in contrast with the 'Guard of the Electorate' the Baden force's main role is to put up a modest resistance to allow the Bavarian electorate time to call the army and prepare the real resistance to the constant threats of Austrian conquest.

Electors Army of Württemberg The Württemberger army is tasked with defence of the Western front, with the looming threat of revolutionary France it has received increased funding and given surplus arms from the Guard of the Electorate, but still rests at a second rate force when compared to the Bavarian army.

Territorial Levy Part time soldiers that can be called from all parts of the nation by the Kurfürst. The levies are primarily designed to be used to garrison towns and other fortified positions; they are poorly armed and trained, and can hardly be relied upon when it comes time to fight, but useful enough when there is a need to acquire bodies for the fight.

Breakdown of navy N/A Landlocked nation, only vessels under the Electorate's command are small party barges reserved for the royal families.

Currency Bavarian gulden - 60 kreuzers to a gulden, four pfennigs to a kreuzer. One Prussian thaler will give you two and a half Bavarian guldens.
Major import/export partners Austria, Andalusia, Confederation of North German States, Italian Triumvirate
Major Domestic Issues
Württemberg-Baden Question
While blessed with the gloriously enlightened reign of Maximilian III Joseph, his lack of an heir caused the war of Bavarian succession, resulting in a great many victories with the support of the North German Confederation, resulting in the Kurfürst acquiring both Württemberg and Baden, this has resulted in several small scale revolts in the acquired states, thankfully put down, but how much longer can Bavaria hold on to the dream of a united Southern German confederation?

Radical Republicans
Munich, Stuttgart, Ulm, many of these cities are full of dangerous revolutionary thought through the many academies that litter the nation, aided by political reforms that emboldened freedom of the press, ideas flood the minds of many of the intellectuals, the Electorate Guard Officer Corps, is constantly under watch for any revolutionary ideas, much to the detriment of the forces functionality.

Major Foreign Issues
An Empty title
At one time in history being an elector of the Holy Roman Empire was a point of pride, a sign of the noblest of houses, but what it has seen to become is giving the Austrian Hapsburg's an empty 'right' to control the greater German peoples, inspired by the North German Confederation, the Bavarian's seek to create a Kingdom, free from Austria's constant invasions and spurring of the grand future of the Bavarian people.

The French
Fights between the Electorate and the revolutionaries have brought various defeats and hollow victories for the Electorate, culminating into a modest successful push into the French territories with a failed siege of Paris, this defeat showed the failings of the Bavarian armies, and the strength of the revolutionaries.

History The modern history of Bavaria from the Thirty-years war; throughout Germany, tensions were aflame around matters of faith. Even after the peace deals in 1555 seeking to limit Protestantism in Germany. From Brandenburg and Saxony, all the way South to Venice, Bavaria under Elector Maximilian the Great had begun to become encircled by protestants. The spread of heretical ideas became increasingly concerning for the electorate, with the rate of the spread, the risk of a protestant Emperor was becoming more realistic. Wars and faith were likewise becoming more commonplace, Cologne in 1583 for instance, while the victory went to the Catholics, it still represented the coming storm clouds of the fight between protestants and Catholics.

Events led to Archduke Ferdinand ordering the return of Catholic land taken since 1555, this resulted in the creation of the protestant union, and Bavaria establishing the Catholic league. The war that was to follow would absolutely devastate Bavaria and Germany. The territorial integrity was maintained, but the tension between Bavaria and Austria was boiling, and the state sought to turn away from Austrian hegemony. Bavaria would spend nearly the next century rebuilding. Forced to fight alongside the Habsburg troops notably during the siege of Belgrade where Maximilian II Emanuel led the imperial troops, as well as fighting in several imperial wars in the Catholic states of Iberia. Upon his return to Bavaria he began what would eventually become the Bavarian golden age, inviting scholars and architects to establish a greater Bavarian identity.

Under Emperor Charles VII, where the Wittelsbach had acquired the title from the Habsburgs, the expansion of the Bavarian holdings had begun to take hold, many free states had begun to fall to Bavarian troops, Austria, seeking to weaken Bavaria and support the free cities, declared war on Bavaria, quickly entering into Bavarian lands. Seeking allies, Emperor Charles VII reached out to the protestant states in the North, troops from Hesse-Kassel, Hamburg, and Prussia responded with aid and through many pitched battles, Bavaria managed to grab victory from the clutches of defeat. A peace was established with Austria, shortly after Charles VII passed away from gout.

The reign of Elector Maximilian III Joseph "The much beloved" would succeed to the throne and bring Bavaria into a period of unprecedented prosperity and greater enlightenment. From codifying many laws and disallowing many inhumane death sentences, Maximilian III instituted reforms such as freedom of the press, freedom of religion, and the banning of slavery. Greater unity with the North German Confederation was sought, inviting a great number of wealthy protestants, jews, and a limited number of Islamic merchants. A great patron of the arts and sciences, he established the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and the Ulm Academy of the Arts. Hessian officers were invited to modernise the armed forces, to great effect of the failing Bavarian forces resting on their laurels. The economy saw greater boons with agriculture and industry, such as the Nymphenburg porcelain factory, which would also see a new home of the Wittelsbach family. On a fateful day in 1777 while travelling in Munich his carriage passed a clock tower, the mechanism had failed and resulted in the bell striking 77 times. Deciding it to be an omen, Maximilian knew his end was nigh, heirless, he passed away from smallpox shortly after.

Thus began the Bavarian war of succession, Karl Theodor, supported by the North Germans, battled the Austrians and her allies, notably Württemberg and Baden, and thanks to the many military reforms of Maximilian III scored a number of victories against the two as the North Germans battled the Austrians, the victory was absolute, and Württemberg and Baden were under Bavarian control. Status quo followed as the electorate began a dialogue of the value of being in an empire that sought its destruction, an absolutist compared to Maximilian III, even more so after the French revolution, rumours around persecution of Catholics hit the Munich court. The response was swift as the Bavarian, Austrian and other German allies sent an army to put down the revolution, February of 1789 would see the German forces at the gates of Paris, Bavarians under the Elector Karl Theodor met the French at Provins, where fate was not kind to the Germans, resulting in a retreat of the forces all the way back to the Rhine.

The Revolutionary Army is currently a mixed bag. While the general soldiery is considered poor, with no matching uniforms and some not even having weapons, it does have a weight of numbers to it, as the ranks of the Revolutionary Army continue to swell thanks to the Levee en masse.

The Artillery Corps is the finest in Europe, both in equipment and training, as the ranks of the Artillery were the least affected by the Revolution, with officers general being middle class, rather than nobility. It has some excellent commanders as well, and was used to great effect in the Bavarian War, where it is chiefly credited with not just victory, but saving the Republic.

French light infantry is also considered to be excellent, as this is where the most skilled and enthusiastic soldiers are sent, and though they are still not uniform in equipment, they are more so than the rank and file.

French cavalry of all kinds has suffered greatly thanks to the purges and exile of French nobles. While it does exist, it is considered the weakest segment of the Revolutionary Army and must essentially be built from the ground up. Those few units of cavalry that remain decent enough, and for scouting and supporting operations.
Breakdown of navy Roughly 100,000 personnel
Unlike in real life, the French Navy remains in a powerful position, with veteran officers even of noble families having been shielded in the political landscape, as the importance of the navy to thwart invasions and send troops to the colonies was considered an urgent matter.. Although some left the service and fled, enough remained to train a new generation of officers.

The French Navy has also embraced the concept of copper-bottoming their ships, and while the entire fleet is not yet coppered, many of the ships of the line above Frigate grade are, with several ships a year being brought in to dock to undergo the process.

History (where you put the history/alt history of your nation)
May 11th, 1787
Tensions boil over after years of social, economic, and political mismanagement by the nation's monarch and noble Estate. Enraged mobs in Paris storm the Bastille, and other major locations in Paris. Over the course of the next few days revolutionary fervor and anger ripple across Paris and other major population centers in France. By the end of June the Estates General have been reformed into the National Assembly, which adopts radical changes to the nation.

June, 1787 - December 1788

Bloody political maneuvering in the national Assembly sees the coming and going of multiple leading figures in quick order, thanks to the revolutionary fervor and those that would exploit it. Radical laws are passed, political factions sidelined, and the Reign of Terror claims thousands of lives at the behest of those who can direct it best, mostly to remove political rivals deemed to be ‘counter-revolutionaries’. The major underlying issues that lead to the Revolution only grow worse.

February - November, 1789
Thanks to the persecution of the nation's Catholics and the precarious safety of King Louis XVI and his family, The Grand Bavarian Electorate, backed by several other powers, issue a proclamation declaring consequences if the targeting of Catholics does not end, or if any harm should befall the King and his family. The Directory denounces the proclamation as unnecessarily hostile. A mob storms the palace where the king is held under guard and executes him.

Fearing an imminent invasion, and seeing a war as a potential war to unify the nation, the Directory strikes first, sending forces into the HRE and other hostile neighbors' lands. For the most part these invasions fail utterly. The disciplined and well equipped armies of France under the King are more akin to the ferocious mobs that stormed Paris. Generals and officers are killed by soldiers who do not want to fight, soldiers vote on which orders to follow and which to not, and a fair number of soldiers do not even have weapons. Many of the invasions turn into routes within weeks, and hostile forces march into France, heading for Paris to put down the revolutionary government once and for all.

Putting up one final resistance, the French army meets the enemy invasion at the Battle of Provins. It is here that the French artillery corps reminds Europe that it is the finest on the continent. Under the command of a young officer named Napoleon Bonaparte, the French artillery corps proves decisive in stopping, and then breaking the enemy army, with the rest of the French forces performing to wildly different degrees, with the skirmisher formations weathering the storm of battle, and the the general infantry with the most extreme performance variation, with some units using the Attack Column to devastating effect, and others melting away thanks to the lack of discipline.

Pursuing the now retreating invaders, a peace is eventually struck, with not much changing for either side.

November 1789 - 1791

Seeing the disaster that unfolded and how close the revolution came to being destroyed, the more radical elements of the government were ousted, with their leaders and most ardent supporters arrested and executed, with their political club being outlawed. The new Directory repeals laws against religion, allowing for the freedom of religion, and also repeals many of the more oppressive laws, bringing an end to the Terror.

They also begin to implement massive reforms, primarily military ones. Quotas were issued to fill the ranks of the Revolutionary Armies, and form new ones. Eventually the Levee en masse would be issued, turning the entire nation to supporting its armies, seeking to make them more uniform, and properly arm them.

The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was made into law, which also outlawed slavery and shockingly extended citizenship to women.

The Directory continues to grapple with the immense internal and external issues facing it, from food shortages to reforming the Revolutionary Army.

History (where you put the history/alt history of your nation)
As the Rum Sultanate declined well into the 13th century, Anatolia was divided into a patchwork of independent Turkish principalities known as the Anatolian Beyliks. One of these beyliks, in the region of Bithynia on the frontier of the Byzantine Empire, was led by the Turkish tribal leader Osman I (d. 1323/4), a figure of obscure origins from whom the name Ottoman is derived.[34] Osman's early followers consisted both of Turkish tribal groups and Byzantine renegades, with many but not all converts to Islam.[35][36] Osman extended the control of his principality by conquering Byzantine towns along the Sakarya River. A Byzantine defeat at the Battle of Bapheus in 1302 contributed to Osman's rise as well. It is not well understood how the early Ottomans came to dominate their neighbors, due to the lack of sources surviving from this period. The Ghaza thesis popular during the twentieth century credited their success to their rallying of religious warriors to fight for them in the name of Islam, but it is no longer generally accepted. No other hypothesis has attracted broad acceptance.[37][38]

In the century after the death of Osman I, Ottoman rule had begun to extend over Anatolia and the Balkans. The earliest conflicts began during the Byzantine–Ottoman wars, waged in Anatolia in the late 13th century before entering Europe in the mid-14th century, followed by the Bulgarian–Ottoman wars and the Serbian–Ottoman wars waged beginning in the mid 14th century. Much of this period was characterised by Ottoman expansion into the Balkans. Osman's son, Orhan, captured the northwestern Anatolian city of Bursa in 1326, making it the new capital of the Ottoman state and supplanting Byzantine control in the region. The important port city of Thessaloniki was captured from the Venetians in 1387 and sacked. The Ottoman victory in Kosovo in 1389 effectively marked the end of Serbian power in the region, paving the way for Ottoman expansion into Europe.[39] The Battle of Nicopolis for the Bulgarian Tsardom of Vidin in 1396, widely regarded as the last large-scale crusade of the Middle Ages, failed to stop the advance of the victorious Ottoman Turks.[40]

As the Turks expanded into the Balkans, the conquest of Constantinople became a crucial objective. The Ottomans had already wrested control of nearly all former Byzantine lands surrounding the city, but the strong defense of Constantinople's strategic position on the Bosporus Strait made it difficult to conquer. In 1402, the Byzantines were temporarily relieved when the Turco-Mongol leader Timur, founder of the Timurid Empire, invaded Ottoman Anatolia from the east. In the Battle of Ankara in 1402, Timur defeated the Ottoman forces and took Sultan Bayezid I as a prisoner, throwing the empire into disorder. The ensuing civil war, also known as the Fetret Devri, lasted from 1402 to 1413 as Bayezid's sons fought over succession. It ended when Mehmed I emerged as the sultan and restored Ottoman power.[41]

The Balkan territories lost by the Ottomans after 1402, including Thessaloniki, Macedonia, and Kosovo, were later recovered by Murad II between the 1430s and 1450s. On 10 November 1444, Murad repelled the Crusade of Varna by defeating the Hungarian, Polish, and Wallachian armies under Władysław III of Poland (also King of Hungary) and John Hunyadi at the Battle of Varna, although Albanians under Skanderbeg continued to resist. Four years later, John Hunyadi prepared another army of Hungarian and Wallachian forces to attack the Turks, but was again defeated at the Second Battle of Kosovo in 1448.[42]

The son of Murad II, Mehmed the Conqueror, reorganized both state and military, and on 29 May 1453 conquered Constantinople, ending the Byzantine Empire. Mehmed allowed the Eastern Orthodox Church to maintain its autonomy and land in exchange for accepting Ottoman authority.[44] Due to tension between the states of western Europe and the later Byzantine Empire, the majority of the Orthodox population accepted Ottoman rule as preferable to Venetian rule.[44] Albanian resistance was a major obstacle to Ottoman expansion on the Italian peninsula.[45]

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Ottoman Empire entered a period of expansion. The Empire prospered under the rule of a line of committed and effective Sultans. It also flourished economically due to its control of the major overland trade routes between Europe and Asia.[46][note 8]

Sultan Selim I (1512–1520) dramatically expanded the Empire's eastern and southern frontiers by defeating Shah Ismail of Safavid Iran, in the Battle of Chaldiran.[47] Selim I established Ottoman rule in Egypt by defeating and annexing the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt and created a naval presence on the Red Sea. After this Ottoman expansion, competition began between the Portuguese Empire and the Ottoman Empire to become the dominant power in the region.[48]

Suleiman the Magnificent (1520–1566) captured Belgrade in 1521, conquered the southern and central parts of the Kingdom of Hungary as part of the Ottoman–Hungarian Wars,[49][50][failed verification] and, after his historic victory in the Battle of Mohács in 1526, he established Ottoman rule in the territory of present-day Hungary (except the western part) and other Central European territories. He then laid siege to Vienna in 1529, but failed to take the city.[51] In 1532, he made another attack on Vienna, but was repulsed in the Siege of Güns.[52][53] Transylvania, Wallachia and, intermittently, Moldavia, became tributary principalities of the Ottoman Empire. In the east, the Ottoman Turks took Baghdad from the Persians in 1535, gaining control of Mesopotamia and naval access to the Persian Gulf. In 1555, the Caucasus became officially partitioned for the first time between the Safavids and the Ottomans, a status quo that would remain until the end of the Russo-Turkish War (1768–1774). By this partitioning of the Caucasus as signed in the Peace of Amasya, Western Armenia, western Kurdistan, and Western Georgia (incl. western Samtskhe) fell into Ottoman hands,[54] while southern Dagestan, Eastern Armenia, Eastern Georgia, and Azerbaijan remained Persian.[55]

In 1539, a 60,000-strong Ottoman army besieged the Spanish garrison of Castelnuovo on the Adriatic coast; the successful siege cost the Ottomans 8,000 casualties,[56] but Venice agreed to terms in 1540, surrendering most of its empire in the Aegean and the Morea. France and the Ottoman Empire, united by mutual opposition to Habsburg rule, became strong allies. The French conquests of Nice (1543) and Corsica (1553) occurred as a joint venture between the forces of the French king Francis I and Suleiman, and were commanded by the Ottoman admirals Hayreddin Barbarossa and Dragut.[57] A month before the siege of Nice, France supported the Ottomans with an artillery unit during the 1543 Ottoman conquest of Esztergom in northern Hungary. After further advances by the Turks, the Habsburg ruler Ferdinand officially recognized Ottoman ascendancy in Hungary in 1547. Suleiman I died of natural causes in his tent during the Siege of Szigetvár in 1566.

By the end of Suleiman's reign, the Empire spanned approximately 877,888 sq mi (2,273,720 km2), extending over three continents.[58] In addition, the Empire became a dominant naval force, controlling much of the Mediterranean Sea.[59] By this time, the Ottoman Empire was a major part of the European political sphere. The Ottomans became involved in multi-continental religious wars when Spain and Portugal were united under the Iberian Union. The Ottomans were holders of the Caliph title, meaning they were the leaders of all Muslims worldwide. The Iberians were leaders of the Christian crusaders, and so the two were locked in a worldwide conflict. There were zones of operations in the Mediterranean Sea[60] and Indian Ocean,[61] where Iberians circumnavigated Africa to reach India and, on their way, wage war upon the Ottomans and their local Muslim allies. Likewise, the Iberians passed through newly-Christianized Latin America and had sent expeditions that traversed the Pacific in order to Christianize the formerly Muslim Philippines and use it as a base to further attack the Muslims in the Far East.[62] In this case, the Ottomans sent armies to aid its easternmost vassal and territory, the Sultanate of Aceh in Southeast Asia.[63][64] During the 1600s, the worldwide conflict between the Ottoman Caliphate and Iberian Union was a stalemate since both powers were at similar population, technology and economic levels. Nevertheless, the success of the Ottoman political and military establishment was compared to the Roman Empire, despite the difference in the size of their respective territories, by the likes of the contemporary Italian scholar Francesco Sansovino and the French political philosopher Jean Bodin.[65]

In the second half of the sixteenth century, the Ottoman Empire came under increasing strain from inflation and the rapidly rising costs of warfare that were impacting both Europe and the Middle East. These pressures led to a series of crises around the year 1600, placing great strain upon the Ottoman system of government.[66] The empire underwent a series of transformations of its political and military institutions in response to these challenges, enabling it to successfully adapt to the new conditions of the seventeenth century and remain powerful, both militarily and economically.[23][67] Historians of the mid-twentieth century once characterised this period as one of stagnation and decline, but this view is now rejected by the majority of academics.[23]

The discovery of new maritime trade routes by Western European states allowed them to avoid the Ottoman trade monopoly. The Portuguese discovery of the Cape of Good Hope in 1488 initiated a series of Ottoman-Portuguese naval wars in the Indian Ocean throughout the 16th century. Despite the growing European presence in the Indian Ocean, Ottoman trade with the east continued to flourish. Cairo, in particular, benefitted from the rise of Yemeni coffee as a popular consumer commodity. As coffeehouses appeared in cities and towns across the empire, Cairo developed into a major center for its trade, contributing to its continued prosperity throughout the seventeenth and much of the eighteenth century.[68]

Under Ivan IV (1533–1584), the Tsardom of Russia expanded into the Volga and Caspian region at the expense of the Tatar khanates. In 1571, the Crimean khan Devlet I Giray, commanded by the Ottomans, burned Moscow.[69] The next year, the invasion was repeated but repelled at the Battle of Molodi. The Ottoman Empire continued to invade Eastern Europe in a series of slave raids,[70] and remained a significant power in Eastern Europe until the end of the 17th century.[71]

National Anthem: God Save the King
Capital: London
Type of Government: Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy under the Westminster system
Head of State:Party in Power: Whig
Population: 49,104,000 (including British India)
Religion Breakdown: Britain as a whole has a predominant Protestant population, as Catholicism was all but thrown out of Great Britain during the Stuart Restoration. As a compromise between Charles II and the Whigs, the Church of England is reformed under a Presbyterian tradition, with the Monarch as Governor leading the council of priests. Only Ireland remained a Catholic bastion in the British Isles, and both King and Parliament are happy to ignore this as it would spark a massive uprising in Ireland if that is to be changed.
Public Goals
Private Goals
Map Claims: All British territories in 1791, controlled and claimed; + Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), Chile, and Cuba

Total military size
Breakdown of army 130,000 personnel
The British Army usually plays second fiddle to the Navy, but it is a powerful force in its own right. It is a standing army, and has been reformed and trained thoroughly reminiscent from its failures in the American Revolutionary War. The Army currently experiences a logistics problem since it has been expanded to meet the French threat (French levee en masse, which greatly expanded their army), and sufficient preparations - including carts and wagons, munitions, and most importantly training - has to be prepared to support British soldiers.

Breakdown of navy: roughly 120,000 personnel
495 ships:
- 140 Ships of the Line (20 First-rate, 28 Second-rate, 42 Third-rate, 50 Fourth-rate)
- 215 Frigates (95 Fifth-rate, 120 Sixth-rate)
- 140 smaller ships (80 sloops-of-war, 60 ketch/cutter/etc.)
The Royal Navy is the largest naval force in the world, totalling 495 ships of all sizes. Following the American Revolutionary War and the French Revolution, it has been maintained to this size, until the nearest moment it can be possibly downgraded. The Navy is the single agency draining most resources from the British treasury, and Britain has levied higher taxes on some commodities to fund its maintenance. The Navy's cost is also shared with colonial authorities on where it is stationed, including the East India Company. Britain has a long naval tradition dating back from medieval ages, and the destruction of the Spanish Armada by Elizabeth I cemented Britain's position as the strongest naval power in Europe. Its officers came from all kinds of social classes, usually headed by a nobleman. Britain's most important colonial possession to maintain the Navy is Canada - from where most of British timber is sourced; the Caribbean, where profits from sugar helped to fund the Navy, and India, where trade in oriental goods has allowed greater resources to be allocated to the Navy.

Currency: British Pound
Major import/export partners : British colonies and territories (Lower and Upper Canada, British India, the Caribbean); the United States, Prussia, Russia, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Andalusia
Major Domestic Issues: The revolutions in Europe brought a wave of liberal fervor to Britain, a spirit that could endanger the aristocracy and even monarchy itself. The Whigs, traditionally the champion of liberalism, is controlling the current government. While they seek a more liberal approach of government and economy they are also loath to emulate the European revolutionaries that ruined their countries with civil conflicts and wars. This ideology must be contained and accomodated to preserve the unity of Britain.
Major Foreign Issues: Since Britain severed all ties to its American colonies after the Revolutionary War, they seek to expand their own Canadian possessions to make up for the loss. British explorers and adventurers have travelled to as far as the Great Plains to survey the land for Britain. Colonial expansionism is also in full swing, as Britain seeks to oust all other European powers present in India, and expand its holdings in the East Indies. Recently, the famous British explorer James Cook has found a massive continent south of the East Indies dubbed "Australia", and while it serves as now primarily as a prison colony, many in Britain wanted to turn the country into proper settlement.

History:
1654-1660, 1662: Anglo-Spanish Wars
Oliver Cromwell allied his Commonwealth to France, despite France being an anathema to his vision of a Protestant Europe, since Spain was a greater threat to English trade in the Americas. Cromwell reformed part of the former Royal Navy into the Western Design, a naval force sufficient enough to challenge Spanish domination in the West Indies. He sought to return into a commercial opportunist trade policy favored by the Tudor monarchs, later abandoned by the Stuarts; so Britain declared war on Spain, and later tied this war into the larger Franco-Spanish War that raged from 1635. British privateers razed and burned Havana, and the Western Design sailed to Hispaniola. They successfully captured Santo Domingo before continuing the campaign to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. Lastly, they invited British planters to settle on the islands, while the navy captured Havana - already burnt and destroyed by privateer attacks.

Charles II, when he was restored into power, did not stop the war and instead supported the Portuguese's seccession from the Iberian Union. Admiral John Narborough was sent to Valdivia, Chile commanding a major fleet and managed to seize the port, securing British dominance over the Straits of Magellan. The territory was never returned to Spain, and was finally ceded with a sum of fifty thousand paid by Britain to Spain in the end of the war.

1660: Stuart Restoration
Cromwell's reign was fairly unpopular to the Irish and most of the English. At the time of his death, his son Richard took up the mantle of Lord Protector, authorized by the Rump Parliament. He soon formed a cabinet, the Committee of Safety, to enforce his rule upon the Commonwealth. George Monck, a general and Royalist sympathizer, secretly invited Charles Stuart - which at that time was in exile in France - to return and restore the monarchy. Monck marched to London at the head of a large army, at the same time Charles arrived in England. The Protectorate and Rump Parliament are both dissolved; Charles was greeted by the whole of London cheering for him, and he was crowned in Westminster Abbey as Charles II, King of the United Kingdom.

Despite his restoration, Charles II sought to make amends with the Puritans. Charles called the Convention Parliament, composed of almost equal amounts of Whigs and Tories, and passed the Indemnity and Oblivion act, restoring titles granted by the Commonwealth and preserving the titles of his supporters that was erased by Cromwell's government. The Book of Prayer 1662's contnets were altered so that it supported a more Presbyterian liturgy, ccording to the Savoy Conference. Whigs pushed for the abolition of Episcopate, but Charles and the Tories created a compromise: bishops, and the Archbishop of Canterbury, would be elected by the presbyters of their own dioceses, but they still have to swear allegiance to the King. This appeased the Puritans, but Charles began stocking dioceses across the country with his supporters, resulting in the election of Royalist bishops. He allowed Nonconformists to take part in the Church, and he was regarded as one of the most liberal monarchs of that time. Charles II died an extremely popular king, and leaving behind a full treasury for his successor.

James II and VII proved to be a radically different monarch to his father. He repealed the Act of Uniformity (that established the Book of Common Prayer as guidance), tore down the quasi-presbyterian structure of the Church of England, and banned Nonconformists from public office. Both the Socttish and English parliaments were outraged, and they invited his daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange to depose James. This resulted in a significant Catholic persecution. William and Mary approved the Bill of Rights, which barred any Catholic from ever becoming monarch of Britain, and reestablished the privileges granted by Charles II.

Their successor Anne (Mary's sister) died without a heir, as his only surviving son died at the age of 11. Parliament appointed James II's cousin Sophia of Hannover as monarch - his remaining children were Catholics - but she died before Anne and as a result her son Elector George of Hannover became King. The Jacobites, which has been stripped of succession because of their Catholic faith, rose in rebellion in the Highlands. George I married her son, the future George II to Louisa Maria Stuart to reconcile the Jacobites. She survived smallpox and was pronounced co-monarch with George II, until their death in 1760. They were succeeded by the current monarch, George III.

Map Claims The original 13 colonies and territories actually in possession of the US by Jan 1st, 1791

Total military size roughly 60,000 musterable men
Breakdown of army
While various state and regional Militias exist and infact form a large core of recruitable strength, the current standing of the United States army states that each state is required to keep at least one Battalion of men, roughly 1150, standing at arms and in good order across a series of fortified encampments, block houses, and forts.

This is to ensure the Army has the ability to muster quickly and respond to any regional or local threat quickly enough to act as a blocking or harassment force until further reinforcements can arrive.

This does not include the First Regiment of Dragoons, which constitute the US's primary quick reaction force. Comprised of roughly 3,600 mounted riders, these men are equiped and trained to act more like mounted riflemen and are spread at mid company strength across key points along major road ways, along ports and the mountains to provide rapid support, recon, and when amassed in appropriate numbers, a battlefield role similar to the British Dragoons they are patterned off of.

Breakdown of navy The nature of the Continental Navy, while ad hoc and rarely decisively successful, showed the strength and possible capabilities of an American navy, leading to the establishment of the Department of the Navy in 1781 after a slime vote in the house of representatives and much Championing by General Washington.

This has led to a good deal of restructuring of the Navy in to something more resembling a proper navy then the ad hoc force of armed merchantmen with letters of marque.

Currently based out of the recently commissioned Norfolk Naval Yard and the port of New York, the Navy sports two squadrons of ships, one 6 ship squadron consisting of a pair of 38 gun Frigates leading 4 smaller armed sloops, guarding the vital trade ports of New York while Norfolk boast three frigates, all 36 gun rated vessels supported by 5 smaller 5th and 6th rates.

Boston harbor is home to a still largely Adhoc flotilla of armed merchantmen and the Navy does keep around 120 armed merchantmen on retainer for rapid commissioning I'm to the Navy though vary few of these vessels would be considered rated warships by any standard.

The United States Marine Corps was established on the 10th of November, 1775 and has continued to serve, at roughly 2000 straight regiment spread out across the fleet, since it's inception as the Continental Marine corps and it's re designation on the 10th of November, 1789. Marines act at boarding, ship security, and much to the chagrin of enemy naval crews, capable Marksmen.

Currency US Dollar, officially. However the low level of mintage and depreciation of printed paper currency means the Minted Spanish Reall and British Pound Sterling remain the most popular coinage used.
Major import/export partners Britain and it's Canadian Territory, France, and Spain.
Major Domestic Issues
Easily the biggest issue concerns Slavery, the tenuous relationship with the local native tribes.
Major Foreign Issues The tenuous trade and diplomatic relationship with Europe amid it's tumultuous events.

History WIP, but the history is OTL until 1781 with the creation of the Department of the Navy. More to come.

Party in Power: Whig
Map Claims: Map Claim

495 ships:
- 140 Ships of the Line (20 First-rate, 26 Second-rate, 74 Third-rate, 20 Fourth-rate)

British privateers razed and burned Puerto Rico, and the Western Design sailed to Hispaniola. They successfully captured Santo Domingo before continuing the campaign to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. Lastly, they invited British planters to settle on the islands, while the navy captured Puerto Rico - already burnt and destroyed by privateer attacks.

The British troops over the course of forty years embarked on a campaign to subdue the Spanish colonists, of which there are few; as many as ten thousand troops are stationed in Chile during the 1723 rebellion.

Nation Name The United Iwi of Aotearoa
Flag [no official flag]
National Anthem (optional) [no official anthem]
Capital Ōpango, modern day Kaikohe
Type of Government Confederation of iwi (tribes/nations/groups of people).
Head of State(s) Te Hōtete, closley advised by Jean-Louis Chéron
Image of Leader
Political Faction or Party in Power [Basically the powers that be in your nation] The Iwi of Ngāpuhi, having conquered the other iwis in the Musket Wars, is in the dominant position - it is lead by Te Hōtete.
Population 80,000
Religion Breakdown Almost entirely the Māori indigenous religion, with a very small catholic population of Pākehā (europeans).
Public Goals Maintain Māori independence.
Private Goals Modernise the Māori nation in order to remain independent.
Map Claims Both North and South islands of New Zealand, and the Chatham Islands

Total military size 500 professional soldiers, but virtually the entire healthy adult male population in reserve (~20,000).
Breakdown of army The traditional Māori army, up until 20 years ago, consisted entirely of part time soldiers, armed with traditional swords and clubs. The shipwreck, and subequent assistance of, Jean-Louis Chéron changed this for the Ngāpuhi. The concept of a specialised millitary and the knowledge of firing a rifle lead to the first true army on Aotearoa in 1780. Numbering only 150 full-time members with support from ~1,000 others, which has since expanded.

Despite being very disciplined compared to other iwis, the army is still poorly trained in comparison to european forces. It can, however, revert back to traditional Māori warfare techniques, which can prove more effective in certain situations.
Breakdown of navy 100 waka taua (war canoes), each of which can seat up to 80 warriors. These canoes would aim to ram an opposing ship, in order to capsise or board it.

Currency [no currency, the Māori use a barter economy]
Major import/export partners Merchants from Britain and France, but no formal trade with any other countries.
Major Domestic Issues Modernisation, preventing a rebellion from the iwis.
Major Foreign Issues Trying not to be colonised.

History (where you put the history/alt history of your nation)
The Alceste, a French merchant ship, shipwrecked on the northern peninsula of North Island, on the 15th May, 1771. Te Hōtete, war chief of the Ngāpuhi, decided to meet these foreigners - this was the first proper contact between the Ngāpuhi and Europeans, aside from explorers staying for less than a week. While they did not share a language, the captain (Jean-Louis Chéron) and Te Hōtete both knew the importance of this encounter. If they could work together, Hōtete's position and Chéron's knowledge would give them unrivalled importance in all of Aotearoa.

The next year was spent with Chéron slowly learning Māori language and culture, and attempting to teach Hōtete european concepts and technology. One of the first things that was understood was firearms - the Alceste carried roughly 200 guns. Hōtete could easily see the importance of these weapons, and set about training his warriors to fight with them. 2 more european concepts caught the attention of Hōtete: a professional army, and an empire. In Māori society, warriors would also serve normal lives, fishing and farming. While most of his army would have to remain that way, a small professional core of 150 men was established, which trained every day with the rifles. The concept of an empire - that is to say, a nation which spans across peoples - was also alien to Māori society. The largest group had always been an iwi. Hōtete now had a goal: establish his own Māori empire, and he knew just how to do it.

The first battle, against the Ngāti Kahu, was a bloodbath. The opposing army of 1,000 lost 1/5th of its men compared to only 7 of Hōtete's men. These victories would only continue, as Chéron was able to establish a monopoly of guns for just the Ngāpuhi in the first few crucial years of the wars. By the time the remaining iwis had aquired a supply of rifles for themsleves, the wars were virtually over. In a short span of only 12 years, Te Hōtete had united Aotearoa.

The question was then: what to do with the defeated iwis, and how to rebuild? Chéron advocated for a true empire - with an emperor, and attempting to erase the conquered iwis from cultural emeory. This, Hōtete knew, would not work. He instead established a confederation of iwis, allowing for the other chiefs to save face, and placed his iwi at the head. This confederation would allow for Hōtete to rule over the other iwi, but also leaves room for disloyal iwi to turn on him - something he is keen to avoid.

The rebuilding of Aotearoa is a difficult task. Over 20,000 warriors had died in the conquests - roughly 20% of the population. This was eased by the introduction of new european crops - primarily the potato - which allowed for less people to work the fields, and more to move to specialised labour. Ironworking is in its infancy after its introduction from iron nails, and a few blacksmiths are beginning to appear in major settlements. The recovery is difficult to organise, however, due to the decentralised nature of the Māori economy. Reforms such as a basic currency are desparately needed, and will be the focus of the chief in the coming future.

While no official envoy of any european state has yet arrived at Aotearoa, Chéron is nervous at the prospect of a great power attempting to claim it. Hōtete is the the constant process of creating plans in the case of such an invasion, but the effectiveness of these plans are hard to tell.

The Māori are at a turning point in their history as significant as their arrival on these shores 600 years ago, and only time will tell if they will be able to navigate these stormy waters with as much ease...

I will accept. However, 150 Rifles wouldn't be possible. 150 Muskets would be. Rifles are expensive and not nearly as good as people think they are in this era. So, a merchant ship having 150 of them is absolutely not a thing. So this acceptance comes with the caveat that it will be 150 Muskets.

That's perfectly ok. I'm not particularly knowledgeable about weapons in general, and I assumed that thay were roughly the same thing - 150 muskets it is.

Nation Name: The Holy Roman Empire (and the Habsburg Monarchy)
NS Nation Name: of the Quendi
Map Claims: As HRE it claims dominion over the whole of the Kingdoms of Germany and Italy, the Low Countries, the Kingdom of Poland and the Duchy of Lithuania, the Lands of the Crown of Saint Wenceslas and the Lands of the former State of the Teutonic Order

In actual practice much of that territory is under little more than nominal (if even that) imperial control and as a result the Habsburg Monarchy increasingly focuses on its own domains those being the hereditary lands, the Lands of the Crown of Saint Wenceslas (including Silesia and Lusatia), the Lands of the Crown of Saint Stephen, the March of Bosnia, the Kingdom of Serbia (whose borders I imagine somewhere between those of the 1718-39 kingdom and the principality), the Banate of Severin, the Duchy of Bukovina, the Austrian Netherlands (whatever isn't French or Dutch), the Duchy of Milan and the Duchy of Mantua as well as de facto control over the Grand Duchy of Tuscany presently ruled by the emperor's son.

Actually I looked it up and it had an estimated 47 million as of 1747 so I increased the population to 53 million people to cover the territories I have control over.

There are a grand total of 50 regiments spread throughout Persia. The guns used by the IPA are primarily of British origin while the swords are of Persian origins.

Denied. Things like “European Naval Doctrine,” (which is a meaningless term) and “retake territory” but not specify how or why isn’t acceptable for an RP of this quality.

Your finding is incorrect for population. Population of Persia was nowhere near that. Unless you can explain how it went down to 6 million by 1800?
