W.I.P Application
Image
Nation Name: Kingdom Of Français (Old French: Reaume de France; Middle French: Royaulme de France; French: Royaume de France)
Culture(s): What is the dominant culture/ethnicity of your nation? If it's a multinational empire, what are the major ethnic groups?
Territory:
Image

Capital City: Île-de-France (Paris)
Population:

Government Type : Semi-Constitutional Monarchy.
Head of State: By the Grace of God, Most Christian King of France and Navarre; by the Constitutional Law of the State, Count of Provence, Forcalquier and the lands adjacent; Dauphin of Viennois, Count of Valentinois and of Diois, His Royal Highness Majesty King Louis XVI
Head of Government: His Serene Highness, Prince, Primé Ministére, Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord
Government Description: Français is a semi-constitutional monarchy, is a form of monarchy in which the monarch exercises their authority in accordance with a constitution and is not alone in deciding. Constitutional monarchies differ from absolute monarchies (in which a monarch whether limited by a constitution or not is the only one to decide) in that they are bound to exercise powers and authorities within limits prescribed by an established legal framework.

A constitutional monarchy may refer to a system in which the monarch acts as a non-party political head of state under the constitution, whether written or unwritten. In addition to acting as a visible symbol of national unity, a constitutional monarch may hold formal powers such as dissolving parliament or giving royal assent to legislation.

The concept of a semi-constitutional monarch identifies constitutional monarchies where the monarch retains substantial powers, on a par with a president in the semi-presidential system.

Majority/State Religion : The Catholic Church is the official state religion of the Kingdom of France. France is traditionally considered the Church's eldest daughter (French: Fille aînée de l'Église), and the King of France always maintained close links to the Pope. However, the French monarchy maintained a significant degree of autonomy, namely through its policy of "Gallicanism", whereby the king selected bishops rather than the papacy.

During the Protestant Reformation of the mid-16th century, France developed a large and influential Protestant population, primarily of Reformed confession; after French theologian and pastor, John Calvin introduced the Reformation in France, the number of French Protestants (Huguenots) steadily swelled to 10 per cent of the population of roughly 1.8 million people. The ensuring French Wars of Religion, and particularly the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre, decimated the Huguenot community; Protestants declined to seven to eight per cent of the kingdom's population by the end of the 16th century. The Edict of Nantes brought decades of respite.

Jews have had a documented presence in France since at least the early Middle Ages. The Kingdom of France is a centre of Jewish learning in the Middle Ages, producing influential Jewish scholars such as Rashi and even hosting theological debates between Jews and Christians.

Economic Description: I expect at least one (1) paragraph. Explain how advanced your economy is, how your economy works (free-market capitalism? heavily regulated economy?) and the major products of your country.

Development: Industrialized, pre-industrialized or primitive? Remember to be realistic, and that if you choose 'industrialized' you will have to justify it in your history.

Army Description:
Army Weakness:
Naval Description:
Naval Weakness:

National Goals: What are the objectives your nation aims to follow?
National Issues: State which problems plague your nation. I expect at the very least two problems.

History :
In 600 BC, Ionian Greeks from Phocaea founded the colony of Massalia (present-day Marseille), on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. This makes it France's oldest city. At the same time, some Gallic Celtic tribes penetrated parts of Eastern and Northern France, gradually spreading through the rest of the country between the 5th and 3rd century BC. The concept of Gaul emerged during this period, corresponding to the territories of Celtic settlements ranging between the Rhine, the Atlantic Ocean, the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean. The borders of modern France roughly correspond to ancient Gaul, which was inhabited by Celtic Gauls. Gaul was then a prosperous country, of which the southernmost part was heavily subject to Greek and Roman cultural and economic influences.

Around 390 BC, the Gallic chieftain Brennus and his troops made their way to Italy through the Alps, defeated the Romans in the Battle of the Allia, and besieged and ransomed Rome.[36] The Gallic invasion left Rome weakened, and the Gauls continued to harass the region until 345 BC when they entered into a formal peace treaty with Rome. But the Romans and the Gauls would remain adversaries for the next centuries, and the Gauls would continue to be a threat in Italy.

Around 125 BC, the south of Gaul was conquered by the Romans, who called this region Provincia Nostra ("Our Province"), which over time evolved into the name Provence in French.[39] Julius Caesar conquered the remainder of Gaul and overcame a revolt carried out by the Gallic chieftain Vercingetorix in 52 BC.

Gaul was divided by Augustus into Roman provinces. Many cities were founded during the Gallo-Roman period, including Lugdunum (present-day Lyon), which is considered the capital of the Gauls. These cities were built in traditional Roman style, with a forum, a theatre, a circus, an amphitheatre and thermal baths. The Gauls mixed with Roman settlers and eventually adopted Roman culture and Roman speech (Latin, from which the French language evolved). The Roman polytheism merged with the Gallic paganism into the same syncretism.

From the 250s to the 280s AD, Roman Gaul suffered a serious crisis with its fortified borders being attacked on several occasions by barbarians. Nevertheless, the situation improved in the first half of the 4th century, which was a period of revival and prosperity for Roman Gaul. In 312, Emperor Constantine I converted to Christianity. Subsequently, Christians, who had been persecuted until then, increased rapidly across the entire Roman Empire. But, from the beginning of the 5th century, the Barbarian Invasions resumed. Teutonic tribes invaded the region from present-day Germany, the Visigoths settling in the southwest, the Burgundians along the Rhine River Valley, and the Franks (from whom the French take their name) in the north.

At the end of the Antiquity period, ancient Gaul was divided into several Germanic kingdoms and a remaining Gallo-Roman territory, known as the Kingdom of Syagrius. Simultaneously, Celtic Britons, fleeing the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain, settled the western part of Armorica. As a result, the Armorican peninsula was renamed Brittany, Celtic culture was revived and independent petty kingdoms arose in this region.

The first leader to make himself king of all the Franks was Clovis I, who began his reign in 481, routing the last forces of the Roman governors of the province in 486. Clovis claimed that he would be baptised a Christian in the event of his victory against the Visigoths, which was said to have guaranteed the battle. Clovis regained the southwest from the Visigoths, was baptised in 508 and made himself master of what is now western Germany.

Clovis I was the first Germanic conqueror after the fall of the Roman Empire to convert to Catholic Christianity, rather than Arianism; thus France was given the title "Eldest daughter of the Church" (French: La fille aînée de l'Église) by the papacy, and French kings would be called "the Most Christian Kings of France" (Rex Christianissimus).

The Franks embraced the Christian Gallo-Roman culture and ancient Gaul was eventually renamed Francia ("Land of the Franks"). The Germanic Franks adopted Romanic languages, except in northern Gaul where Roman settlements were less dense and where Germanic languages emerged. Clovis made Paris his capital and established the Merovingian dynasty, but his kingdom would not survive his death. The Franks treated land purely as a private possession and divided it among their heirs, so four kingdoms emerged from Clovis's: Paris, Orléans, Soissons, and Rheims. The last Merovingian kings lost power to their mayors of the palace (head of household). One mayor of the palace, Charles Martel, defeated an Umayyad invasion of Gaul at the Battle of Tours (732) and earned respect and power within the Frankish kingdoms. His son, Pepin the Short, seized the crown of Francia from the weakened Merovingians and founded the Carolingian dynasty. Pepin's son, Charlemagne, reunited the Frankish kingdoms and built a vast empire across Western and Central Europe.

Proclaimed Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III and thus establishing in earnest the French Government's longtime historical association with the Catholic Church, Charlemagne tried to revive the Western Roman Empire and its cultural grandeur. Charlemagne's son, Louis I (Emperor 814–840), kept the empire united; however, this Carolingian Empire would not survive his death. In 843, under the Treaty of Verdun, the empire was divided between Louis' three sons, with East Francia going to Louis the German, Middle Francia to Lothair I, and West Francia to Charles the Bald. West Francia approximated the area occupied by–and was the precursor to–modern France.

During the 9th and 10th centuries, continually threatened by Viking invasions, France became a very decentralised state: the nobility's titles and lands became hereditary, and the authority of the king became more religious than secular and thus was less effective and constantly challenged by powerful noblemen. Thus was established feudalism in France. Over time, some of the king's vassals would grow so powerful that they often posed a threat to the king. For example, after the Battle of Hastings in 1066, William the Conqueror added "King of England" to his titles, becoming both the vassal to (as Duke of Normandy) and the equal of (as king of England) the king of France, creating recurring tensions.

The Carolingian dynasty ruled France until 987, when Hugh Capet, Duke of France and Count of Paris, was crowned King of the Franks. His descendants—the Capetians, the House of Valois and the House of Bourbon—progressively unified the country through wars and dynastic inheritance into the Kingdom of France, which was fully declared in 1190 by Philip II of France (Philippe Auguste). Later kings would expand their directly possessed Domaine royal to cover over half of modern continental France by the 15th century, including most of the north, centre and west of France. During this process, the royal authority became more and more assertive, centred on a hierarchically conceived society distinguishing nobility, clergy, and commoners.

The French nobility played a prominent role in most Crusades to restore Christian access to the Holy Land. French knights made up the bulk of the steady flow of reinforcements throughout the two-hundred-year span of the Crusades, in such a fashion that the Arabs uniformly referred to the crusaders as Franj caring little whether they really came from France. The French Crusaders also imported the French language into the Levant, making French the base of the lingua franca (lit. "Frankish language") of the Crusader states. French knights also made up the majority in both the Hospital and the Temple orders. The latter, in particular, held numerous properties throughout France and by the 13th century were the principal bankers for the French crown, until Philip IV annihilated the order in 1307. The Albigensian Crusade was launched in 1209 to eliminate the heretical Cathars in the southwestern area of modern-day France. In the end, the Cathars were exterminated and the autonomous County of Toulouse was annexed into the crown lands of France.

From the 11th century, the House of Plantagenet, the rulers of the County of Anjou, succeeded in establishing its dominion over the surrounding provinces of Maine and Touraine, then progressively built an "empire" that spanned from England to the Pyrenees and covering half of modern France. Tensions between the kingdom of France and the Plantagenet empire would last a hundred years, until Philip II of France conquered, between 1202 and 1214, most of the continental possessions of the empire, leaving England and Aquitaine to the Plantagenets.

Charles IV the Fair died without an heir in 1328. Under the rules of the Salic law the crown of France could not pass to a woman nor could the line of kingship pass through the female line. Accordingly, the crown passed to Philip of Valois, rather than through the female line to Edward of Plantagenet, who would soon become Edward III of England. During the reign of Philip of Valois, the French monarchy reached the height of its medieval power. However Philip's seat on the throne was contested by Edward III of England in 1337, and England and France entered the off-and-on Hundred Years' War. The exact boundaries changed greatly with time, but landholdings inside France by the English Kings remained extensive for decades. With charismatic leaders, such as Joan of Arc and La Hire, strong French counterattacks won back most English continental territories. Like the rest of Europe, France was struck by the Black Death; half of the 17 million population in France died.

The French Renaissance saw a spectacular cultural development and the first standardisation of the French language, which would become the official language of France and the language of Europe's aristocracy. It also saw a long set of wars, known as the Italian Wars, between France and the House of Habsburg. French explorers, such as Jacques Cartier or Samuel de Champlain, claimed lands in the Americas for France, paving the way for the expansion of the First French colonial empire. The rise of Protestantism in Europe led France to a civil war known as the French Wars of Religion, where, in the most notorious incident, thousands of Huguenots were murdered in the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre of 1572. The Wars of Religion were ended by Henry IV's Edict of Nantes, which granted some freedom of religion to the Huguenots. Spanish troops, the terror of Western Europe, assisted the Catholic side during the Wars of Religion in 1589–1594, and invaded northern France in 1597; after some skirmishing in the 1620s and 1630s, Spain and France returned to all-out war between 1635 and 1659. The war cost France 300,000 casualties.

Under Louis XIII, the energetic Cardinal Richelieu promoted the centralisation of the state and reinforced the royal power by disarming domestic power holders in the 1620s. He systematically destroyed castles of defiant lords and denounced the use of private violence (duelling, carrying weapons and maintaining private armies). By the end of the 1620s, Richelieu established "the royal monopoly of force" as the doctrine. During Louis XIV's minority and the regency of Queen Anne and Cardinal Mazarin, a period of trouble known as the Fronde occurred in France. This rebellion was driven by the great feudal lords and sovereign courts as a reaction to the rise of royal absolute power in France.

The monarchy reached its peak during the 17th century and the reign of Louis XIV (1643–1715). By turning powerful feudal lords into courtiers at the Palace of Versailles, Louis XIV's personal power became unchallenged. Remembered for his numerous wars, he made France the leading European power. France became the most populous country in Europe and had tremendous influence over European politics, economy, and culture. French became the most-used language in diplomacy, science, literature and international affairs, and has remained so. France obtained many overseas possessions in the Americas, Africa and Asia. Louis XIV also revoked the Edict of Nantes, forcing thousands of Huguenots into exile.

Under the wars of Louis XV (r. 1715–1774), France defended New France and most of its Indian possessions after its victory in the Seven Years' War (1756–1763). Its European territory kept growing, with notable acquisitions such as Lorraine (1766) and Corsica (1770). A divisive king, Louis XV's powerful rule, his well-advised financial, political and military decisions – as well as the debauchery of his court– made the monarchy popular, however, the excessive and luxurious spending by Louis XV and the nobles enraged many French citizens who called for greater equality and representation.

Louis XVI actively supported the financial, political and military reforms and feared the wrath of the peasantry the revolution created a new ‘‘Third Estate’’ as well as a new position of ‘‘Prime Minister’’ nobility and clergy opposed the industrialisation and tried to stop it but Français industrialised because it cannot stay behind the other Great Powers Of Europe, especially it's rival Britain. France gained and acquired huge amounts of debt during its costly wars especially the Seven Years' War which caused it to raise taxes a decision which is very unpopular among the masses. Much of the Enlightenment occurred in French intellectual circles, and major scientific breakthroughs and inventions, such as the discovery of oxygen (1778) and the first hot air balloon carrying passengers (1780), were achieved by French scientists. French explorers, such as Bougainville and Lapérouse, took part in the voyages of scientific exploration through maritime expeditions around the globe. The Enlightenment philosophy, in which reason is advocated as the primary source for legitimacy, undermined the power of and support for the monarchy and also is a factor in the slowly brewing and boiling French Revolution. As the new decade arrives Français is ever stronger than ever the Master Of the European Continent and a Great Colonial Superpower looking onward to the challenge of dangers of rebellion and foreign enemies.

Great Britain and Galactic Commonwealth, preliminary app looks good but: Syria and Indochina will not be French colonies at this point. Also, you would have to choose between Indonesian colonies or Indian colonies, not both. Other than that, the rest of your territorial claims in Americas and Africa look alright to me. :)

Nation Name: The Kingdom of Scandinavia
Culture(s): Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish
Territory: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Greenland, Svalbard Islands, Namibia and the islands of Java and Sumatra
Capital City: Stockholm
Population: 25.5 million

Government Type: Absolute Monarchy
Head of State: Gustav the First
Head of Government: Gustav the First
Government Description: The King or Queen has absolute say in all things happening in Scandinavia. Each Ministry of the Kingdom of Scandinavia is run by a Minister who's only superior is the King or Queen. In charge of each province is a governor elected by the people of that province whose job is to run the province effectively and efficiently and keep the people living in and traveling through safe. Underneath the governor is the various mayors of the cities, towns and villages who are elected by the citizens of these cities, towns and villages. They are to run their cities, towns and villages effectively and efficiently and also keep the people within their jurisdiction.

Majority/State Religion: Protestant Christianity

Economic Description: Scandinavia runs on free market capitalism with some regulations to help prevent monopolies from forming and ensures workers in Scandinavia earn minimum wage. While this seems very progressive to the other industrialized nations in Europe, this is very common on the provincial and local levels in Scandinavia. The new labor laws on the national level were enacted by King Gustav in 1775. The major products produced are ships, guns, gunpowder, forestry, iron and steel. Unlike RL, Scandinavia began to industrialize at the same as Great Britain in 1760.

Development: Industrialized

Army Description: Royal Guard- A 15,000 men strong division dedicated to defending the Royal Family and the Capital, Stockholm. It is divided into three parts. The first part is the infantry which is 10,000 strong armed with the best muskets that can be bought and is the most highly trained troops in the Royal Scandinavia Army. The second part is the Calvary section of the Royal Guard which is 4,000 strong. They equipped with the best weapons and ride the best horses in the RSA. The last section are armed with heavy and light cannons. Since Stockholm is a fortified city, the cannons are mounted in permanent defilades built into the walls around the city.

Calvary Regiments- These regiments which are 1000 strong and carry good equipment and have good training putting them on par with the Calvary units all across Europe. There are 40 of these regiments spread out all across the Kingdom including its overseas territories.

Infantry Regiments- The Infantry regiments are 3,000 strong, carry good equipment and have decent training. There are 20 regiments spread out across Scandinavia proper and 2 regiments in each colony bringing the total to 30 regiments.

Army Weakness: Smaller than many of the other major powers in Europe, has decent training but is not up to par compared the rest of Europe (is currently being remedied), has a shortage of Manpower limiting how many men can be recruited.
Naval Description: 20 First Rate Warships, 40 Second Rate warships, 100 Third Rate Warships, 50 Fifth Rate Warships and 25 Sixth Rate Warships. While not as big as the British Royal Navy, the Royal Scandinavian Navy is still a force to be reckoned with.
Naval Weakness: The RSN has the same problems with manpower as the RSA but has superb training that the army lacks.

National Goals: Curb French influence around the world, create new colonies in Africa and Asia, and befriend Germany, The Danubian Confederation and Ruthenia.
National Issues: Even after 235 years after unification, there are still people who wish for their country to be independent but fortunately they have so far remained peace though for how long is anybody's guess, some corruption in the Ministry of Justice.

History: The former Nations of Scandinavia followed the historical route up to 1540 when Sweden annexed Finland and declared war on both Norway and Denmark. The reason behind the war was because the King of Sweden wanted to unify Scandinavia under his rule. For the next 5 years in what would become known as the Scandinavian Unification War, both Denmark and Norway steadily lost ground with Denmark surrendering in August 1543 and Norway falling 2 years later on September 11th, 1545. As a result of this war and follow up Treaty of Stockholm, the new Kingdom of Scandinavia was formed. Over the next 235 years rebuilt itself into a model for other nations to follow.

In 1675, the new Scandinavian colony of Sydvästra Afrika with its new capital named New Oslo was established as Scandinavia's first colony. This new colony was built up with Scandinavians, Germans, the Dutch and other Europeans coming to the colony in droves. The natives in Sydvästra Afrika while not Scandinavian citizens were treated with caution and watched closely for any signs of rebellion. In 1720, Scandinavia expanded out to the East Indies of Southeast Asia by claiming the Islands of Java and Sumatra establishing the Scandinavian East Indies as a colony with the new Capital named Jakarta. This colony started growing like an out of control wildfire while the native were treated the same as in Africa. Due to Scandinavia strength, racism did exist to some extent in all colonies. While this was going on, the Scandinavian economy and military was expanding making them one of the Strongest nations in Europe. The Royal Scandinavian Navy is considered by many to be in the Top 3 of strongest navies in Europe and probably the world. In the coming year, King Gustav plans to reach out to the Koreans to assist them in breaking away from Wei.

RP Sample: I have experience in the forums but not with this nation and no this isn't a puppet. Link. If you are new to the forums and do not have a sample, write a short paragraph so I can check your RP abilities.

Yep. As you stated before Indochina won't be french because apparently you have interests there and it's completely fine and you have reserved Syria in case an Ottoman Player comes up. And choosing between Indonesia and India hook me up to India. Although, I'd like to have some established trading outposts and small colonial outposts in Singapore and Malaysia peninsula if you don't mind? :)

James and I have discussed, and I'll be writing an app for the American colonies on the assumption that Britain is the mother country. I'm formalizing my reservation on that basis.

Reservation

Nation Name: The Continental Association (sometimes called the United Colonies, or simply "America")
Territory: All of Eastern North America not claimed by France. Also, given that French North America was very sparsely populated, American colonists have likely begun settling illegally west of the Appalachians - as they did historically after the Proclamation of 1763.

For really, I think that the poorest he that is in England hath a life to live as the greatest he. And therefore truly, Sir, I think it's clear that every man that is to live under a Government ought first by his own consent to put himself under that Government. And I do think that the poorest man in England is not at all bound in a strict sense to that Government that he hath not had a voice to put himself under.

I wonder if it might be interesting to play the Cape Colony, given that it appears a now-unified Germany has gobbled up the Netherlands. South Africa would definitely have a larger population if this is the case - lots of Dutchmen not willing to be ruled from Berlin.

Alternatively, I was looking at a Greek Republic or South American rebels.

Hmm I'm interested in this but it seems I can't be Portugal, a German state, Denmark, or a Western Russia, I'm not hugely familiar with things in India or with the Ottomans however so I might have to have a little think. I'd be willing to consider being someone's colony also.

I was originally going to app as a Persian Empire to replace the Ottomans that could be an idea?

If you play as a Greek Republic then maybe in your history you can be helped by Ruthenia since they are sort of a noble republic type deal

I sent some telegrams to Europa, and they liked the idea of southern China being an outward-looking, maritime focused country. As it turns out, a samurai by the name of Hasekura Rokuemon Tsunenaga traveled to Europe between 1613-1620, though he failed to secure trade agreements due to Japan's suppression of Christianity. I'm thinking that in the ATL a Chinese ambassador reached Europe around the same period, offering goods like silk, porcelain, and tea in exchange for European technology and manuscripts, like gunpowder weaponry and designs for ships. This could be the basis for a longstanding trade relationship which sees Europeans coming to the Great Ming as merchants, missionaries, diplomats, academics, and even the odd military advisor. This could be reciprocal, with the Ming Dynasty sending scholars to Europe in order to learn about western advancements, customs, so on and so forth.

Perhaps there is a particular country which the Ming have a special relationship with, leading to a greater degree of trade, cultural exchange, and influence. Would any of the European powers like to rp that with me?

All three sound interesting.
