Okay let's break it down.

Economics-wise you were probably among the world's top ten oil exporters before the war. You also have some fertile agricultural lands particularly in northern Syria around Afrin. Depending on how open the UAR was, you could have had a strong and competitive tourist sector as you got tons of ancient sites and cultural relics from Babylon, Rome etc. Also religious tourism as you have Karbala and Najaf which are big holy sites for Shias.

Western relations would have been strained by the overthrow of the pro-western Hashemites in the 50's but could be cordial or neutral by the time the war broke out as there hasn't been anything like the Gulf War in this timeline. The war provides tons of interesting ways to play the game in addition to just military ops. Shias I think you could make a deal with setting up some kind of power-sharing agreement or extended local autonomy to fight the AOP (ISIS), Kurds are not impossible but more difficult as they've got significant support from the PRK, and the PRK is a Comintern member with it's own goals.
