--New Civilizations--

Welcome to the World That Might Be...

╔═══════════════╗
-Introductions-
╚═══════════════╝

You're an old soul in a new world. You are given no explanation - no cause of knowing how you arrived here - nor reason for being here. You don't know where or when you have landed. You are alone, you are naked, and no one is looking for you. You have come just in time to witness the end of humanity's blank slate: the time before history and civilization. Man is finally beginning to understand his real power, and will soon understand his place in the world. You, are the product his quest for knowledge and mastery over the Earth. You have seen the culmination of 5,000 years of labor, before miraculously being sent back to the beginning of it all. No reason was given to you for arriving here, so you must make the reason! Why were you sent to the beginning of time? How did you shape our journey? The history books are blank once again, and you - you shall be the Author!

»»————- ————-««

Welcome to New Civilizations! A game, which sends you, either your literal self, or a person very like yourself, back five thousand years into the past - the dawn of history, and civilization. There is no explanation of how you arrived, or even why you are here. Not only has the world changed around you, but you have changed as well. From the day you arrive in the past, forever onward, you will not age. You've become a timeless immortal! What is more, you are able to, unconsciously and instinctively, understand and speak every language you come into contact with; your body has become immune to receiving or transmuting disease - though you are still able to be killed by other unnatural means. Sent to the past, as a timeless and near-immortal, you are free to shape history and mankind's journey over the millennia as you see fit - restrained only by your reason, your means, and the will of other Authors. Typically though, you are expected to fashion some kind of civilization or culture - this is an ultimate sandbox game. New Civilizations is one of the oldest and most successful Role Play games in the history of NationStates.net, with the very first iteration having been made all the way back in 2016! In joining our ranks as a fellow Author of mankind's new history, you shall count yourself among some of the most accomplished and imaginative members of the role playing community! We're always open, to new and old players alike!

╔═══════════════╗
-Rules and Expectations-
╚═══════════════╝

1.General NS rules
2. You may not post your author profile to the author list until you have been accepted by the Opening Poster, G-Tech Corporation, or any coordinators he may appoint.
3. Your Author should not be someone who just happens to be perfectly suited for the time period. You can't be an expert in metallurgy, blacksmithing, masonry, and carpentry. Your Author should be an otherwise normal person with normal skills. It is preferred that your Author resemble you as much as possible (be yourself if you want), though exceptions will be made if deemed reasonable.
4. The people of the year 2,965 B.C., are not stupid - or even that ignorant. They are, in their own way, usually just as logical and reasonable as you are now - you crafting some bronze and making a shovel isn't going to make people think you are a god. What is more, these people aren't going to make you chief of their village simply because you killed the old chief in a fight. That'd be unreasonable today, it'd be unreasonable then. Treat the NPC's like they were actual human beings with fully functioning brains.
5. You arrive in this world naked - literally. You come in with nothing.
6. There is no set rule for time skips. At opportune moments in the story, I will do a small global skip a few years into the future. Every participant will be warned ahead of time of when this skip will happen. Prior to these skips, try not to jump more than a few months or a year ahead in your characters development - and significantly less when you are just starting out.
7. You are free to write the reactions of NPCs as you see fit. On occasion, I or a CO-OP might intervene simply to make the story more interesting. You are limited in reacting for the NPC's of another Author's civilization by what that particular Author will permit (if allowing you to react on their behalf at all).
8. You will arrive in this world after having awoken from sleep.
9. Your Author should not just instantly comprehend with their situation; some kind of panic should be expected.
10. Skills listed in your Author Profile should be specific, relevant to your current situation, and things to which you posses a degree of expertise at. You actually must be an knowledgeable expert at the skill which you list, in order to declare that you have it.
11. Do not list any of the following as a skill: historical knowledge, oration, charisma, leadership, military tactics - unless you have very hard skills in these areas. Do note that skills which are deemed too broad will have to be sharpened until they fit our criterion for acceptance.

-FAQ-

A big question which often plagues Authors is how fast technology should progress, and what kinds of technologies would be available to them. You are free to explore off in any direction you want to, technology-wise, but you should probably keep some things in mind.

1. If you personally do not know how to do this thing right now IRL, your Author won't either.

2. You are starting out from as scratch as literally possible. You are coming into a world naked, during a time were writing and numeracy are practically unknown to anyone outside of other Author civilizations. Very basic laws and concepts of science and the world have not been invented yet, and are likely unknown to the average person. Most places are still using stone tools, and others are just beginning to use copper. The people of this era may be as rational and logical as you are, but that isn't to say that they have access to any specialty tools or knowledge. You will pretty much have to reinvent all the basic concepts of science

3. You are constrained by your resources. If you wanna make bronze, but the area you live in doesn't have any tin - well then you're out of luck.

4. You can learn new knowledge and skills in the IC, it just takes time. Say you wanted to demonstrate your Author's ever growing affinity with carpentry, then you should show them, over a series of multiple posts, experimenting and figuring out the skills needed to be a carpenter. This goes with pretty much everything: blacksmithing, chemistry, tactics, medicine, sailing, etc.

5. If you aren't sure about the feasibility of something, just ask either myself, G-Tech, or post it up in the OOC. You will get helpful feedback and advice from your fellow Authors. Don't try and just fake it - you will be found out eventually, and may be asked to retcon your actions.

History is just a record of the actions of man, and culture is just a man's history remembered. Civilization isn't some arbitrary numerical measurement of a people, it is subjective. What kind of society do you want to build? What actions will propel the people around you towards that goal? What obstacles must you overcome? There is no objective way for a civilization to form, you've just got to figure it out on your own. Look to other Author's for examples if need inspiration.

A lot like regular non-civilized natives do - except a whole lot tougher. These guys aren't barbarians with clubs, these are civilized early nation's in their own right, with developed cultures, political systems, and reasonably advanced technology. Uncivilized peoples are pretty easy to conquer or convince to join your civ, by NPC civ's are a very different story. Your interactions with them will largely be left for you to write out in the IC - with occasional intervention perhaps from either of your OPs.

Eh, that depends. 1. How long were you gone in relation to the IC, 2. Are you still active.

For the first, if you were only gone for say, a single timeskip, and nothing significant happened to your civilization since you've been away, you'll be free to retake command of your old civ. If you were gone for longer, or something significant has happened to your civ, you may be asked to start again somewhere else in the world.

For the second, if you are gone, and your account goes inactive - your author is just presumed dead

Short Answer: Not Europe

Long Answer: Depends. If you are story centric, and don't mind being on your lonesome for a long while, you should probably pick an area far away from any other Author Civ. There, you will have time to explore your own culture, free from having to worry about others interfering with your long term plans.

If you want to interact with others though, and desire rapid technological growth, I would suggest either East Asia, the Levant, or the red sea region. Those places have other authors, and they're not typically as murderous as the Europeans are.

Author Application

Name: Aaron Dawson
Age: 25 at arrival
Height and Weight: 5’ 9”
Skin, hair, and eye description: White Caucasian, light brown hair. Green eyes.
( Optional ) Picture:

N/A

Prior Profession: unemployed
Level of education ( specify degrees or note worthy classes ): Bachelors degree in economics, Columbia university.
Physique description: Relatively lean and not athletic.
Useful skills: Degree in economics with a minor in urban studies.

National Origin: Eastern United States
What were you doing prior to falling asleep and awakening in the past?: Riding the train back from work after a job interview.
Description of personality: Cautious and unwilling to take large risks. Willing to sacrifice bandit lives for flood control infrastructure.
Where in the world are you landing?: Luoyang, China

Autobiography/Biography ( paragraph minimum ):

Aaron was born in Massachusetts and currently lives in New York City since he graduated from university three years ago. Being born in 1994 Aaron became a more regular user of the internet as he got older, and found a wealth of knowledge that he would use to educate himself. A year after finishing his education Aaron had difficulty finding a job, and on the way home from a job interview fell asleep on the train. He woke up under a tree near modern Luoyang China sometime before the Shang Dynasty, and over the course of several years overthrew the King of the Luoyang and began a campaign to unify the Yellow River. In Year 12 of the Chinese calendar (16 years since his arrival) an administrative change in the People's Government of China's economic planning agency cut off tribute payments towns and villages were giving to non-integrated peoples who lived within China's borders. This set off possibly the most devastating and bloody war in human history up to that point and resulted in years of fighting across the interior of China, which the state and the people are only just now recovering from in Year 16 of their calendar. Aaron lost one of his children in a raid on Luoyang in the early stages of the war and nearly his wife and several friends as well, and since the end of the war has run a much more repressive state than he has before. Although freedom exists and is protected in the urban centers of the People's Government of China - which is called the "Empire of the Yellow River" or similar terms by outsiders and simply the 'empire' or 'state' by those that live within it, former bandit tribes have found themselves placed into labor camps and often treated harshly if they managed to survive the bandit wars.

China's ability to process raw materials in blast furnaces, waterwheel powered textile mills, or primitive steam engine driven industries of other types has developed much faster than its ability to extract raw materials to fuel those industries in most cases. Although there have been advances in labor saving devices in both mining and agriculture the amount of rice, grain, and iron ore needed to satisfy China only grows and the state which has only recently become stable is being pressured to expand its trading network and its borders to secure the resources and people it needs to grow. China's fragile democratic constitution and governance system has barely maintained itself through economic and social stress caused by the bandit wars. Only the black robed bureaucratic central government men that travel from province to province cleansing local governments of clannishness and corruption have so far managed to keep the empire's domestic affairs in order. The group called the "Twenty Five Points", a secret organization led by Aaron aimed at collecting knowledge pointing to other time travelers from outside China and acting as a secret ideological guide and guardian of the Chinese state in general, has also increased its activity and actively works to put spies in the court of the northern warlord Sugedai and ensure the right men remain in the right places inside China's growing bureaucracy.

While Aaron directs his men to work on a dozen projects at a time necessary for the maintenance of an unimaginably large empire for the people of 2964 BC, he focuses most of his own effort on developing a way to refine the poor quality iron that China's blast furnaces put out into something more useful. Despite efforts at education only a minority of China's population can read and write and the requirement for literate bureaucrats and military officers sucks up much of the literate work force, the rest divided between engineering, skilled artisan work, and the multitude of other tasks necessary for maintaining the empire. Much of the work of coordinating technological innovation or philosophical innovation falls to Aaron and his friend and prime minister, Tan Jun.

Although Aaron's empire faces many problems the military is perhaps stronger and more well organized than it has ever been due to the wars against the bandits. The economy similarly no doubt is one of the most productive organized economies in the world, and if Aaron could only figure out how to make good iron quicker or the secret to gunpowder an industrial revolution would take off. Slowly the empire is also educating more bureaucrats and is developing the governance and economic capacity to support large expansion again even though Aaron leaves most of the day to day governing to his associates to focus on his metal industry work.

China will grow larger.

( Optional on down)
What are your intentions for this RP, what's the long term goal?: Make a Chinese civilization based on a confederation of large cities and metal working.
What people or places are you taking inspiration from?: Marx & Engels, Lenin, Stalin, Thomas Hobbes.
Why did you chose to land where you did?: It had no player civilizations nearby at the time.
What vibe should we get from your civilization and it's culture?: Socialism with Legalist characteristics.

What are your character's motivations?: Avoid the mistakes of the future by revolutionizing the past. Figure out how much of the world is dominated by other time travelers. Industrialize China and secure new natural resources for it. Raise his daughter well and protect his family.

Theme Song?: none

What do you wanna see in this RP? What would make it better?:
-more NPC states and NPC state activities
-more innovation coming from NPC states
-civilizations centered around player empires which extend beyond those empires borders

“It is difficult for me to imagine what “personal liberty” is enjoyed by an unemployed hungry person. True freedom can only be where there is no exploitation and oppression of one person by another; where there is not unemployment, and where a person is not living in fear of losing his job, his home and his bread. Only in such a society personal and any other freedom can exist for real and not on paper.” -J. V. STALIN

Author Application
Name: Grace Kinoshita
Age: appears 23
Height and Weight: 5'0"/100 lb
Physical Description: small and fair skinned, with black hair that goes to her shoulders, and light brown eyes.
( Optional ) Picture:
Image

Prior Profession: College student
Level of Education - Formal or Informal: pursuing a Bachelor's in Philology
Physique: when she first entered the New World, Grace's abilities were mediocre at best and pathetic at worst. Over time, as a result of a rigorous lifestyle from working as a soldier and crew member of a ship, she has become much stronger and durable, developing muscle and being able to endure the elements.
Useful Skills: pre-arrival she had intermediate art skills and learnt how to read and write in Classical Japanese and Classical Chinese as part of her degree; during her time in the New World, she has become a marksmen in archery from decades of practice and how to march in formation from life in the army.

National Origin: Japanese American
What were you doing prior to falling asleep and awakening in the past?: during a combination of studying for an important test on medieval language and mindlessly browsing the internet.
Description of Personality: an unhealthily introverted person who didn't like interacting with others, Grace was only ever concerned with what she saw as her own private universe: her room, with its books, gadgets, and models. That is not to say she lacked empathy, but her reclusive nature made her blind to the plight of others, and she tended to see things in idealized terms and abstract concepts instead of reality. Despite being an adult, she is (or was) still heavily immature and reliant on others.

As an Author in the New World, Grace gradually became more and more unhinged after the death of her wife, combined with her arrogant belief in her own superiority as someone from the 21st century against a primitive culture group that didn't share her advanced culture. After almost dying as a result of her arrogance, she began to doubt her superiority more and more, while retreating into her extreme solitude with the exception of her cousin-in-law. Her unhealthy dependence on her lead to her driving her away and eventually severing their connection permanently.

After her exile, Grace has become a more self-conscious person. While still incredibly selfish and with a tint of arrogance, she has no idea how to reconcile her new conscience with the facts of her life before. She is more empathetic to those in need and has less delusions of grandeur, wanting to simply get away from Hanajima, the old seat of her ultimate hubris, and a reminder of how awful she once was.
Where in the world are you landing?: Nara, Japan Northeast Coast National Scenic Area, Taiwan :p

Autobiography/Biography: born a nisei (second generation immigrant) Grace was someone with an overtly bookish nature even as a child, and not the quirky kind that is normally seen on television. At twelve, she would make herself ill from staying up all night in order to read weird fiction (she preferred Lord Dunsany and H. P. Lovecraft) and would domineer her playmates by making them reenact scenes from various historical books she read, from the Battle of Port Arthur to Siege of Orléans (where she insisted she play Joan D'Arc). Her visits to her grandparent's house in Tokyo every summer were some of her best experiences, but filled her with some trepidation because it made her realize that she felt eternally an outsider to both Japanese and Americans.

As she became older, Grace became more reclusive, isolating herself in her room after school and surrounding herself with books, weapon replicas, and game systems which became her own little world. From fourteen to eighteen, she had very little interaction with fellow students, and most would've been unable to remember her in their high school yearbooks. After an intervention, and threats of taking away her possessions, Grace's parents managed to make her enter the real world and interact with people, something which enraged her but left her no choice.

Her time outside her room started to gradually improve her health, and her meek self-effacement combined with natural inclination to academics lead to favorable impressions in her quest to enter college, resulting in her being able to attend a decent university. Because her parents were still wary about keeping her from retreating into her hermit lifestyle, Grace had to make a pretense of being more extroverted, while spending the late hours of the night browsing the web and reading books.

After being transported to the New World, Grace was able to recognize its similarity to the old one she had read about from the Neolithic period. Because the chieftain allowed her to reside among them, she settled and eventually fell in love with the chieftain's daughter. Their relationship allowed her to significantly influence the politics and culture of the village more than she thought or intended to, and invited the wrath of the traditionalists who saw her as a devil spreading dangerous ideas. After fighting and subduing hostile tribes, her wife was killed, and a mourning Grace and her father-in-law waged a civil war in their grief, with the former coming out victorious and the latter going to the next life wherever that be.

Having seized power, Grace adopted her cousin-in-law, Ruyanpe, having killed the chief, her legal guardian. The two of them became extremely close because of their shared loneliness, and Grace shared all of her knowledge about the Old World with her, although the latter understood little. Grace expanded the new empire, and when Ruyanpe came of age, the two's trust in each other provided Grace with a loyal minister and officer who she could trust more than anyone else with armed men. Over time, Grace started to show signs of neuroses after losing the Battle of Hyogo and murdered a priest, starting a sectarian backlash that would take years to undo and the effects of which are still felt in the country today. Her extreme seclusion allowed one of her underlings, a minister she had trusted since her arrival, to seize power from under Grace and imprison her. The country split into civil war and Grace was trapped in the wilderness, being tormented by a sect of flagellants who cut off her hand and eye in the belief it would allow her to achieve Buddhahood.

After escaping her captors, Grace was restored to the throne by royalists and assumed co-rule with Ruyanpe, who slowly started to realize that her friend would not give her the independence she desired. After two years, with the help of nobles who were terrified by Grace's more sadistic decisions, such as castrating the families of rebels and seizing the property of anyone who she deemed less than sufficiently loyal, Ruyanpe launched a palace coup and exiled Grace to a faraway monastery near where she lost her most important battle. Grace made the best of the situation, but what remained of their friendship was severed when she was not allowed to donate sutras she had copied to the temple of her departed wife for fear that the trek to Nara would allow her to rally the remaining loyalists who saw her as their rightful liege.

In her lonely monastic cell, Grace eventually came to dislike what she had created and to see all of it as just a sham, simply desiring to return to her own world but being unable to because of whatever forces were at play. After miraculously regenerating her limb and eye, she gained a fresh outlook on life and decided to leave the monastery and live in the wilderness. A nun who was loyal to her followed her into the wild and the two lived a semi-married life together. Several years passed, and the world around Grace aged, but she seemed not to. The royal court underwent changes, and women who were around Grace's age and similar looking disappeared across the kingdom. Fleeing her home, Grace moved west into barbarian country before being drafted into the army during the Sino-Hanajima War and sent to Kyushu. Her time in the army was cut short when she agreed to serve under a merchant captain in exchange for him paying the fee for her release from military service.

On the ship, Grace performed her duties and avoided forming attachment to anyone, failing in the case of a fellow crew member, Zhou. As the ship sailed through Ryukyu and into Taiwan, Grace became suspicious of a stucco statue, and her suspicions were confirmed when she realized it was a priceless religious icon. The revelation started a fight on board of the ship, as the crew had no desire to deal with being chased by the state of Hanajima if it were discovered they had the statue. Grace and Zhou hid inside the quarters as a violent storm struck the ship, and were the only two still on the ship by morning. After swimming to the shore and knocking another crew member who attacked them unconscious, they wandered through the north until finding a village which accepted them. As a result of her seemingly miraculous powers, Grace gradually started becoming important to the Taiwanese chieftain, who saw her as a powerful person inside his Austronesian belief system.

What are your intentions for this RP; what do you think your Author will seek to accomplish?: after being exiled from Hanajima and severed from her countrymen, to slowly build her own country from various immigrant and indigenous peoples who come under her protection.
What people or places are you taking inspiration from?: Coxinga, Gajah Mada, Taksin the Great, Zhang Zongchang, Kita Ikki, Sukarno
Why did you chose to land where you did?: closest place to Japan that wasn't continental East Asia.
What vibe should we get from your civilization and its culture, if you seek to establish one?: a heavily mixed people of South Asian and East Asian descent, united under a strong monarchy with an Austronesian framework.
What are your character's motivations?: to get away.
Theme Song?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IGTiFuDjTI
What do you wanna see in this RP? What would make it better?: probably more delving into how the actions of Authors in establishing new cultural and religious elements has effected the ethnogenesis and nationbuilding of the natives.

Hrm. A few things - minor, but worth clarifying.

The Bandit Wars: my recognizance of the timeline was ten years to conclude, four years to begin stabilizing the borders of the YRS' core states. If that is what you mean in your writeup, well and good - but the language of recovery and having both a large and strong military in existence at the four year point don't jive with that in my head.

Primitive textile mills: Entirely possible I just missed this, but I don't recall their creation. You have a citation, I presume?

As far as thoughts about innovations coming from non-Author states, you'll need to keep in mind the timeframes we're working with. Some areas will see innovation swiftly, like military formations, strategies, cultural axioms, and the like. Others, like technological sophistication or expertise - those won't be occurring significantly faster than in the original timeline, save where Authors have moved them forward. At least not until we start seeing non-Author states reaching a level of material prosperity where education and innovation are not detrimental to their survival.

Categorically j'accept though, pending those clarifications.

Name: Grace Kinoshita
Age: appears 23
Height and Weight: 5'0"/100 lb
Physical Description: small and fair skinned, with black hair that goes to her shoulders, and light brown eyes.
( Optional ) Picture:

Great to see Grace back, making a new go of it and learning from her mistakes. I'm personally looking forward to the quirks of exactly what you've noted - the ethnogenesis and nation-state identities as they emerge in contrast to Author ideologies. There are some particularly outlandish exemplars in the continental UK and Switzerland for Viktor that I look forward to wrapping my head around, time permitting.

Anywhos, j'accept.

Here is a post from two years ago game time where I mention semi-industrial silk weaving in the city of Jimo. I have mentioned it in other areas but I think at one point telegrammed you asking explicitly if I could use simple steam engines to drive industries like these, and you approved my request.

It had also been four years game time since the big bandit revolt and I took the timeline you gave me to mean that in four years China would have stabilized itself and the bandits would no longer be an existential threat. In ten years they would not exist anymore. In my recent posts I’ve written about what the remaining bandits are doing and the problems they cause China. I have also mentioned that a lot of travel between cities still happens in convoys because of the remaining bandits.

The large military I have can’t be brought against any single enemy and is mostly part time provincial soldiers which although much more professional than they were at the start of the war are still not as well equipped or trained in general as the central government troops which would be China’s standing army and also of much greater quality than they were before the war. Most fighting against bandits is now done by provincial armies, with the central government army focusing on external threats. I don’t have the ability to conquer new territories and rule them directly as provinces but I do have the ability to back up allies outside China and establish resource producing client states like I am doing in Korea and on my borders.

I think that with the spread of literacy and technology from author states that NPC kingdoms should pop up quickly even if they aren’t very advanced. The main thing holding back civilization in the Bronze Age is agricultural productivity. Any technology that raises that will necessarily cause organized societies to appear. On China’s borders for example influence from China, bandit migration, the spread of technology, and literacy has caused many proto-states to appear and although they are not advanced or very literate they are incomparable to hunter gatherers.

Only in such a society personal and any other freedom can exist for real and not on paper.” -J. V. STALIN

Hrm. I'm only seeing "the city's many semi-industrial workshops which were producing silk textiles" - is there something missing? That's not exactly an explanation of what Aaron has introduced, only a theoretical result.

It had also been four years game time since the big bandit revolt and I took the timeline you gave me to mean that in four years China would have stabilized itself and the bandits would no longer be an existential threat. A complete stabilization of China's borders in four years seems improbable - remember that discussion we had about how far an army can march in a campaign season, even if unopposed? At four years the lion's share of China's borders and cities won't have even seen a single central army soldier campaigning to restore their territorial integrity, let alone emerged from the state of threat which they face. I'd personally say that emerging from that state of threat is pretty integral to China getting to a position where she is rebuilding.

Yeah, see, I don't really buy the provincial and central government troops now being in better shape than they were before the war. That isn't how warfare treats men; warfare devours equipment and lives, it doesn't give back better and stronger, save in small numbers. I can see some central units which have fared well being of better fighting quality from veteranship, aye, but most will have had to fill out their numbers with new recruits to replace losses, lowering overall quality, especially given the percentage of the populace you planned to include in those forces. We're talking men who are too old to normally be recruited, or too young, or with defects and disabilities - those are who will be filling the places of others who died in the war.

The same argument, broadly, goes for military equipment. There will be some places where innovation and luck have created better armed units, but largely wear and tear, battlefield losses, the loss of labor to the draft - those are all going to mean armaments and gear will be suffering in both quantity and quality.

I think that with the spread of literacy and technology from author states that NPC kingdoms should pop up quickly even if they aren’t very advanced. Sure, sure. Statehood I concur will be gathering pace, as will political and military organization. Are we not talking about innovations independent of Authors though? Those require rather substantially more settled conditions than simple statehood.

Sure, sure. Statehood I concur will be gathering pace, as will political and military organization. Are we not talking about innovations independent of Authors though? Those require rather substantially more settled conditions than simple statehood.

1. I explained building power looms in the past. I also mentioned semi-industrial work conditions elsewhere in my posts.

2. There is no such thing as territorial integrity except in the most general sense in the Bronze Age. Most fighting has also been done by local soldiers rather than central government soldiers. Almost all towns and cities would have been protected or would not exist any longer. All I said is that China isn’t under existential threat anymore.

3. They are certainly more experienced and I would not have taken so many losses as to require recruiting the young, old, or disabled. That would be insane. In some parts of China that might have happened but in general it would not have needed to occur. Over the war the equipment in some areas has decreased in quality, but in others would have increased. Weapons for example would have needed to be produced at a higher rate and more production would lead to an increase in skill of the producing workers. In general my economy would have been greatly harmed, but even the worst wars usually leave the victor with an experienced and well led army.

4. Alright fair enough.
V. STALIN

Author Applicaiton
Name: Inanna I -Rasulat al Abzu- Olifia bint Shili al Yanba'awi
Age: 35
Height and Weight: 5'11", 149 lbs
Skin, hair, and eye description: Skin of sun-scorched hues of olive and tan which have stained what was once a very pale canvas. Her face is dotted with freckles from ear to ear. Long tendrils spiral down from her head down her back, straightening from the weight of their length. Though always hidden behind a layer of fine makeup, her eyes seem tired whenever you gaze into them.

Prior Profession: Collage Student
Level of education : BA in "Non western history" and philosophy
Physique description: Time has worn its way upon the plump and youthful girl. Though her blessings have healed her wounds and kept her immortally young, the feeling that this person has lived a hard life cannot help but come across from her body, the way it moves, the way certain bits of flesh hangs. She is far skinnier than she first was, you can see her ribs clearly under her skin. She's tall and skinny, but with a certain amount of fat still hanging upon her sides. Her shoulders are broad, but without much muscle to justify them.
Useful skills: A woman who has gained a great deal of knowledge in rhetoric and leadership from her time in the past. She's spent her time in many roles, from a laborer to a fisherman, to a wisewoman, a priest, and a prophet. She knows many herbal remedies and spells which seem to give comfort to those who seek it. Most importantly, though, she possesses enough imagination to pull from in order to create the role she seeks to fulfill.

National Origin: Texas, USA
What were you doing prior to falling asleep and awakening in the past?: She’d been dozing off between idly scrolling through YouTube clips in her dorm room, before the waves of time washed her up on those intrepid shores 16 years ago.
Description of personality: The spring of her youthful idealism, having been matured in the summer of her rule- now fades into autumn. As she spends more waking hours in the past than in her own time, she has taken on the personality of a person of the time. She’s a sentimental woman for that which she interacts with personally, while being perfectly willing to let those outside her gaze lift the burden of her decisions, even at great sacrifice. Though very well still a dreamer, what world she dreams about creating couldn’t be any less similar to when she first landed. Yet as all things change the more they stay the same. A similar spontaneity about her passions still whips her to action in sudden bursts of manic inspiration. A woman of temperance and extreme indulgence, she faces her daily life with moderation, but is keen to overindulge in regular individual acts of excess.
Where in the world are you landing?: The royal city of Uruk

Autobiography/Biography:
WIP - I just need to edit for grammar and actually proper style.
Sing in me muse and hear the song of Olivia’s pride. Foolish and brave, that cost the Gishimmari incalculable pain, pitched countless souls of hero’s into Abzu’s abyss. And left their bodies to rot as feasts for birds and jackals, as the gods will be done.

Begin first, with a boy who, much like many of his like, could hardly speak to any other. Whose immense anxieties and fears drown out desiring flames of passion or desire. Smothered before they can arise. Whose mother, upon hearing his pains, chastised him, blamed him for his own suffering. Who wrote guilt into his mind and mocked him, deepening those wounds. And all the while she did so because she loved him so. And he loved her, which is why he could not bare to confront her. A boy who desired to be of woman’s body and soul. To live the life as any woman would, benign and gruesome, yet in the comfort of a place which he felt at home in. Thus she lived a few brief years, switching between deepening self loathing and euphoric happiness at the precarious tightrope she walked. Studying, hiding, loving, living, crying. A lonely existence comforted by few friends, cast leagues away in distant lands to whom she would never see. Made to dream, and in those waking dreams of words written and spoken, she could feel the freedom love herself.

And, curiously, as she studied the distant past deep into her textbook, glassy eyed and unaware, Tyche seemed to pull her strings of fate. And the less she paid attention, and the more she began to drift asleep, the deeper into the past she was pulled. Like a thick mist, it carried her from the waters of the deep into the waters of the sea.

Orphaned in the deep past upon unknown shores, Olivia was surely to die. For though she found strangers to take company in, she was accustomed to the hard life she was to live. Hard, back breaking work was not of well known to her. For she could not butcher a cow, she could not lift heavy burdens, and she could not catch fish. It was only through the mercy of a little man in a boat, that her life was spared. For she was dumped into the water with great force, her weakness leaving her to drown while the strangers looked on uncaring. Only he, Waleed, her first father, would save her.

Thus was she taken from that village of hostile men into one of kinder ones. So began the first steps into her life in the city of Yanbu. Adopted as a daughter, the man caring selflessly for her, for he could not have children of his own. She studied with his wife, a wise woman healer, and there learned first of these peoples faith. And of Yanbu and for Yanbu did she live her life among these people, and followed them upon their raids against their neighbors, tending to the injured and proving herself capable of use to people of little to spare for charity.

Years turn by, and she became accustomed to the hard fought life she is to live, she is made a friend of her community, and with them helps to make life a little easier. When, it seemed, that she should be stranded with nothing to show for an explanation, forever to consider her aloneness in this world, a strange ship comes upon her shores. Not, it seems, of the slavers to the east, but a grand ship of strange design demanding submission for gold. Though not knowing who these strangers are or what tongue they speak, she is able to correctly negotiate a treaty which enriches them, offering their ‘masters’ but words for gold. It is there she finds out she is special, and there is someone just like her in the lands of Mesopotamia. A time traveling lord of Sumeria who she will never get to meet. But with that she knows at least she is not alone.

More years go by and she becomes respected by her community. With her knowledge as a communicator and newfound riches, she helps her people befriend their neighbors. Pacts and bonds of marriage align the disparate tribes of the nearby valleys into an informal alliance. She’s seen as a leader, and with her status as a healer and wise woman opens a temple to the gods, housing their village idols in a large curtained kabbah. But she is a woman of romantic heart as well as ambition, and an equally ambitious girl named Alya catches her eye. The two begin a whirlwind passionate romance which will last years, little knowing that it will eventually come to ruin.

The second encounter with time travelers comes when Christian men of the south visit her. Dark men of the lands of Aksum, but this confrontation is far more hostile. Her inner hatred of the Christian faith, that which her mother used to chastise her, Leads her to confront the missionaries of this distant immoral at any step they make to spread their religion. Unable to face the public backlash in Yanbu, the Aksuni spread their beliefs to neighboring villages of the south - unknowingly the sparks of the largest conflict yet seen by the people of this tribal society.

Yet before this can take hold, a third encounter finally meets Olivia with another Immortal, this of woman kind. A great goddess of the west, calling herself Isis, dressed in gold and followed by hundreds of warriors. Their meeting is brief, but as these two holy women speak, they swear oaths of friendship and future partnership. Little do either know they would never encounter another again.

From the south, Yanbu’s sister-tribes call out for aid! Although neither bastardized Christian’s or feverant pagans in this first conflict could have predicted such a thing, a warlord of their faith converted sets to work a bloodletting of hundreds. For not of Christ’s love has he been preached, but of the matter of masters and slaves. And for that justified right of god to seek dominion over the land, and of heaven’s reward upon the other side of a blade, he has sought to bring war. Rallied together, the people of Yanbu’s allies and the Christian’s fight three pitched battles, which finally conclude with a victory for the pagans. Yet what sacrifice has been paid makes any victory unsweetened. Alya, Olivia’s beloved warrior, lays dead in the sand. Her body is burned, but not to ash, and she is left to be alone upon the battlefield she died upon.

And more years go by and still a Olivia cannot shirk her guilt for the death of her lover. That woman to whom she had promised forever faithfulness to, who may still be alive if not for her foolish conflict of ideology. But Tyche’s hand still plucks at the strings of death, it seems, and spares Alya the doors to hades yet. And from the grave, a Mutilated Alya returns to Yanbu- a walking corpse, demanding vengeance upon the Christian’s. And vengeance do they bring.

For in the first war, and the years after whence Alya was still dead, Yanbu had become rich with trade and influence over her neighbors. They traded coffee with the aksuni, soap, and surrounded their city with irrigated fields of barley and orchards of palm trees. They had rebuilt Olivia’s Kabbah to a great stone temple, and gathered a force of hundreds of warriors to defend their Allies.

Upon Alya’s return, they had the supplies to wage a true war. And with their Allie’s, the Yanba’awi invaded the south, the lands of Murabek where Christian merchants of Aksum had built princely cities between grand valleys and miles of rich soil. The Yanba’awi and their Allies waged a lightning campaign, flipping tribes against their brothers and expelling any Christianfolk or foreigner they came upon. Then whence they had defeated their enemies encampment in Aden, they ransomed the city- and brought its loot back to Yanbu for the people to enjoy.

This miracle, this gods ordained victory led by Alya, led the people to fall for her utterly. A war hero blessed by the gods, she was crowned queen of the Gishimmari, all those tribes who lived within the Hejaz. But with this power, new animosity spread between Olivia and her beloved Alya. And no longer did they sleep in the same bed, nor speak to eachother. For Alya had become unfaithful to Olivia with her heart, and so Olivia had done the same with her body. Thus the two separated and with their followings, would divide their people in two. Olivia, taking upon a religious quest to find a great comet which appeared in the sky - built an encampment at the site of Al Jebel where she gathered her supporters. She deemed this comet as a sign of the gods that a new era had come, and she, a messianic figure to build a kingdom far more just than she could do there.

Far off in Uruk, a woman of Olivia’s order pleaded with a vengeful king to take her lady as a bride. With promises of thousands of migrant warriors, and the blessing of the gods’s own chariot in the form of that great light all the land had seen, he accepted, and swore to marry Olivia should she return upon that very comet, followed by thousands.

True to her word, when Olivia’s bannermen returned with stone in-hand, the time had come to reveal her hand. Furious at this final act of betrayal, Queen Alya banished our heroine to never return to the lands she had made her home, and all those who decided to leave, and join Olivia on the journey to their new home.

He loved reading fiction and history, but he spent most of his time making things out of the junk thrown in the streets. His parents were determined to give him a good education, so he went to a primary and secondary school. He was unpopular and a target for bullies until he managed to break a bully’s nose in a fight. After that, he was mostly left alone. He wanted to learn kung-fu but in the end didn’t bother and just stuck with football.

After getting stuck in the past, he joined a reedhouse dwelling community. As refugees fled Ur, he was the one who convinced the people living in the house to accept them as one of their own. In a cruel twist of fate, one of those refugees ended up killing the boy’s old guardian, which resulted in Ali killing the murderer. He proclaimed himself leader of the community, and has great expectations for the future.

Ah, you did? That would be a better post to quote, then. As for semi-industrial work conditions - well, that can mean a very wide range of things, given we're talking anywhere from 3000 BCE to the 1800s. I'd appreciate it if you clarified.

2. There is no such thing as territorial integrity except in the most general sense in the Bronze Age. Most fighting has also been done by local soldiers rather than central government soldiers. Almost all towns and cities would have been protected or would not exist any longer. All I said is that China isn’t under existential threat anymore.

Not under existential threat, sure. To me the idea of "rebuilding" goes quite a bit beyond merely no longer existential threat.

You say you wouldn't have taken many losses - but let's walk through that at the ground level. You've posited that most of the fighting is being done by local troops, not the central armies. On the face of it, I'm not seeing much that separates these local troops from the enemies they would be put up against; even the central Chinese soldier is working with a fairly limited budget when it comes to training and armaments, and local troops don't have those luxuries.

So, is there a reason that the casualty ratio for these local troops should significantly outweigh their foes? I'm seeing a China outnumbered by her enemies fighting on multiple fronts without a large military edge, and to me that says significant wartime casualties. If we put two thousand brigands with looted bronze weapons and above-average fitness/experience in a battle against, say, a thousand second-line local Chinese soldiers with comparable equipment, that'll be at best a pyrrhic victory for the Chinese.

I'll agree that wars lead to a victor with an experienced core of soldiers and leaders. I'm just not certain we can broadly say China is yet the victor in this conflict - rather that she has seen localized successes, and localized setbacks.

Was born in 2007, just a bit after the invasion of Iraq by the Americans, in Karbala.
