I like what I see so far.

Reminds me of Jainism.

The primary influence is Jainism, but there are hints of esoteric Christianity throughout it. For all intents and purposes, the Ahimsayanians believe that for the sake of the greater good it's better to submit (especially seeing what the empire is capable of). The idea is that human empires are temporary, and will inevitably crumble, but causing unnecessary suffering leads to the greater influence of a wider scope villain in their cosmology known as the Misanthrope (think Molag Bal who brutalized a primitive human, and cursed her to become the first vampire in the Elder Scrolls). This doesn't mean that people are blindingly pacifist which leads to the reason the oathbreakers exist.

I do imagine that some misinterpretation could lead to some people assuming that Kohda is the "Misanthrope" - which could lead to religious persecution.

On this final note I am curious how extensive is slavery in the empire? As that will definitely be a source of friction

Very extensive. The sheer amount of slaves in the capital alone was the reason why there were no censuses during last two Emperors. When the last census started the Emperor became afraid that if slaves realise how many of them there are, they would revolt.

Slaves are used for everything, and even low status people own at least one slave.

Quite possibly, yes, though it depends how valuable would the slave be. The master would have to try to do it through the Imperial Court, though.

The plot thickens! I enjoyed reading that app, I'll be interested to see what the character following that religion is like/the prince in charge of that region. It's a good job there is explicit commitment to non-violence, hopefully the Oathkeepers' influence can be kept in check, from the perspective of the Karlani Empire anyway.

Hello! Ah goodness me I have finished my almost 10k word dissertation now, only have a final exam to go later this week! I definitely am still interested sorry I never got that post up concluding the party.

I've been thinking about the uses of medicinal plants and written mantras to play with the idea of the low-level magic described here, but I was wondering if there were any thoughts as to where this might be put best to use? I'm thinking of making a character who would be present within the court, though their use of magic would probably be more on the clandestine side, mostly for a price to others. I'd aim towards a more initially neutral role, with character interactions deciding alignment, as I don't think I want to start out with a particularly strong alignment, preferring to let it develop with time.

You are welcome! In general the Emperor would be against such things, as Khodaism forbids magic; but does not all his nobles would be opposed to it. Some would gladly violate their own faith for profit and gain.

Certainly! Would you happen to have any recommendations as to a position in court where one might get away with preforming magic without drawing the attention of the Emperor? I’m including all sorts of servants in this; I’m just not entirely sure where I want to take this concept and would appreciate any thoughts anyone has.

Certainly, someone of pagan origin would be able to, for the most part, get away. While the empire discourages pagan worship, it is not inherently prohibited, albeit only among the conquered peoples.

Perhaps a pagan wife of the Emperor? The Khodaist laws forbid marrying non-khodaists, but in practice it still happens often due to sheer pragmatism.
