2020: The Grand Game

Image

And so it begins.

The year is 2020, and the world has never seen more wealth, never such a great bounty of food, never such rapid progress in science. Still there is much conflict and unrest sweeping the globe in the wake of social, political, and technological changes in the last few decades. In the Americas, Columbia was once again rudely disabused of the notion that the great oceans surrounding it rendered it invulnerable to the petty conflicts in Europe and Asia. After the September 11'th Attacks the Columbians found themselves in Afghanistan, fighting a rising tide of radicalism alongside an unlikely ally sharing a common enemy, the USSR. Indeed, the Soviet Union stands astride both Europe and Asia, looking in each direction as China attempts to assert control over Asia and rip it's Asian allies out from the Comintern while in Eastern Europe, the threat of the unrest that plagued Romania and Poland in the 1990's threatens to flare up again. In western Europe, the old European empires solider on, but the Entente is divided, between it's three great founding members all pulling the alliance in a different direction, the Anglois toward the world's oceans and the Italians to the Mediterranean while the Germans look ever eastward with a wary eye as a state of unease has descended on the continent in the wake of the Yugoslav War of the 1990's. In Asia, China seems poised to rise to a grand station it believes to be it's by right. However, not all look kindly upon China as it expands it's influence, Japan struggles to hold on to what little is left of it's former Empire while India is growing increasingly panicked over it's encirclement by China, at the same time Soviet ally Vietnam and Columbian ally the Philippines are locked in disputes with China over the nine-dash line. In Africa, hope for peace after the brutal South African War was dashed by the wars in Darfur and South Sudan while a Jihadist insurgency grips the Sahel where militants hide in the vast wilderness and among the civilian population, awaiting their chance to strike again while the Anglois colony of East Africa sees it's own anti-colonial insurgency.

Will the Entente stay united and find common ground even as conflicts of interest fray the bonds of the alliance? Will the Soviets manage to stand tall and strong as the unquestioned hegemons of the Comintern and prevent China and the Entente from nibbling away at edges of it's sphere? Will Columbia, awakened from it's torpor and pulled into the world stage retreat back across the oceans, or assert it's will upon those it encounters on distant shores? Will the Chinese extend the rightful rule of the Middle-Kingdom across the Asian continent and remake it in the image of National Socialism, or have the Chinese bitten off more than they could chew? Will Japan be able to hold on to what is left of it's old glories, and perhaps find a way to bring new glories to the Empire of the Rising Sun? In this shifting world only one thing is certain. The winds of change are blowing and when they do, some people build walls while others build windmills.

The tipping point begins in the year 2020...

Polish People's Republic

1st of January, 2020
Legionowo Army Base, Poland
It was the early hours of the morning when everyone else was in bed that Generał dywizji Mieczysław Gocuł, Generał dywizji Rajmund Andrzejczak, Chief of the General Staff Generał Franciszek Gągor and the Chief of the Citizens Militia Director General Militia Jarosław Szymczyk gathered around the table in the bunker. Together these men represented the leadership of the anti-Communist and anti-Soviet movement in Poland; a movement not of the centre-left but of the hard right. Tonight, they met to plan their takeover of the government.

The first to speak was the Chief of the General Staff, Generał Franciszek Gągor.
“The illegal regime occupying our country will soon come to an end by our hands.” Began General Gagor “Long have the Russians dominated our country. They are no Slavic brethren of ours; time and time again they have shown their true colours whether Czarist, Republican or Soviet. We must however bite our lips…at first, else we risk failing and another Soviet occupation of our beloved Poland. We must appear as the saviours of the state from collapse to the Soviets. Now I believe General dywizji Gocul and Director General Szymczyk have prepared something for that purpose.”

“Yes thank you General,” Replied Director General Szymczyk, “We need to make the Soviets think that we’re saving them the trouble of another invasion and occupation by forming a government of national salvation to preserve the system.”

“Instead however, we’re going to immediately arrest the leadership of the Polish United Workers’ Party and any remaining unpatriotic senior members of the Armed Forces and Citizens Militia.” Added General dywizji Gocul “And that’s where your 1st Mechanized Division comes in, Generał dywizji Andrzejczak. We need your troops to reinforce Director General Szymczyk’s Citizens Militia in their activities in Warsaw and to destroy any resistance in the Capital. Other units loyal to our cause will be doing similar jobs throughout the country, however your job is the most important.”
“My men can do it.” Answered Generał dywizji Andrzejczak. “Just give us launch time, lists and orders and we’ll have the job done in time for lunch.”

“I’m glad you’re so confident General dywizji Andrzejczak,” Responded Generał Gągor, “The key to this coup is surprise and a quick decisive blow, which won’t come if the Communists see a division rolling towards Warsaw unexpectedly. With that said, our plan is to have your division in Warsaw on an expected visit for a parade through the city with most of the Polish United Workers’ Party leadership in attendance.”

“Alright…so when does the parade take place?” Asked Generał dywizji Andrzejczak.

“The Fourth of March,” Answered General Gagor, “ostensibly to commemorate First Secretary Bogusław Ziętek’s birthday, but in reality to commemorate the Battle of Gdansk during the Second Great War and, of course, the overthrow of the communists in Poland that we intend to undertake.”

“Then I shall begin the preparations at once.” replied Generał dywizji Andrzejczak, as he headed towards the bunker door, “Good night Gentlemen”.

And with that, the Generals gathered their things and returned to their respective barracks before dawn broke. Plans had been laid out and things were now in motion. All they now required was for everything to go to plan between now and the 4th of March.

PM Announces Tax Cuts
Image

Prime Minister Constantinos Bogdanos has announced today in a joint session of the Parliament that his government will be pushing forward for tax cuts. More specifically, the Prime Minister stated that he would lower the corporate income tax from the current 25% to 18%, with plans to further lower it in the future, and the flat income tax from 15% to 10% while additionally offering a tax incentive to digital nomads: the government will tax only half of the income earned by those who are self-employed, individuals, or newly employed in positions created in Greece. This new incentive will apply for a maximum of seven years for any worker who wants to move their tax base to Greece, regardless of their nationality or job type.

"Our legislation aims to make Greece competitive in the global market," the Prime Minister said. "By lowering the cost of doing business, we will attract new investments - both foreign and domestic - and create many new, well-paying jobs for the Greek people. Our reduction of the income tax shall also have the additional effect of boosting consumption, thus driving economic growth. This in turn shall result in increased revenues for state coffers despite the reduction in taxes. This is the so-called Laffer curve."

New Immigration Bill Announced
Image

The Minister of Public Security and Immigration, Makis Voridis, has announced a new immigration bill is to be legislated soon. This bill will toughen border protection, a result of the influx of illegal immigrants since the beginning of the UAR civil war. The bill will increase the number of border and coast guards by an additional 1500 officers, shall legalize pushbacks at both land and sea, and fund the extension of the border walls in Evros and Minor Asia. It shall also designate Anatolia as a safe country, thus denying asylum to immigrants coming through this kingdom. The bill will also close down the current refugee camps and replace them with detention centers with barbed wire guarded by drones and armed officers. Exit from the centers will be disallowed and illegal immigrants who are arrested shall be contained in those camps until they can be deported back to their country of origin.

"We need to protect Greece's European heritage and Christian civilization," the Minister stated. "We cannot allow an influx of illegal immigrants from third world countries with an alien culture. This sudden influx of immigrants will result in a change in the demographic makeup of our country, something which cannot be tolerated. This government is determined to protect Greek borders regardless of what globalist liberals and their lackeys are saying."

Liberal Leadership Race Heats Up
Image

The leadership race of the Liberal Party has heated up, with the three contenders - Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Alexis Tsipras and Nikos Androulakis - trading blows. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, son of former Liberal Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis, represents the centrist liberal wing of the party. Just like his father, he is a classical liberal who is moderate on economic issues - seeking to maintain the current tax regime and increase public investment in education - and a progressive on social issues, having taken a clear stance in support of marijuana legalization and same-sex marriage. Mitsotakis has stated that the only way for the Liberals to return to power is if they assure the business community and the middle class voters that they will not rock the boat on economic issues. "The Liberals are the party of prudence and moderation," Mitsotakis said. "At a time ERE is becoming increasing radical and ideological, we have a chance to win over the people who want prudent management of the economy and heal the ruptures of our society with an inclusive social agenda. We need to prove we are the party of center."

Standing opposite to him is Alexis Tsipras, a left-wing firebrand who represents the rising left-wing populist wing of the party. "The way to defeat ERE is to prove that we are the party of many and not the rich few," he stated. "We need a radical agenda that will redistribute wealth from the rich oligarchs and multinational corporations to the average people of this country. What good is economic growth if only a few benefit from it?" Tsipras supports an increase of corporate tax to 30%, raising VAT on luxury goods up to 25%, raising inheritance tax for the rich from the current 10% to 60% and reforming the current flat income tax into a progressive tax. With that added revenue, he argues, the government will be able to invest heavily into healthcare, education and social welfare. He has also expressed support for investments into renewable energy and for more stringent workplace regulations.

Nikos Androulakis stands between Mitsotakis and Tsipras as the standard-bearer of the social democratic wing of the party. Just like Tsipras, he wants to increase government spending but he is far more moderate and seeks to appeal to the same demographics as Mitsotakis. "We need to bolster government spending in education and healthcare," he stated. "We need to hire more hospital staff and teachers, and we need modernize our education and healthcare infrastructure. At the same time, we need to avoid overtaxation that would slow economic growth or massive spending that would lead us into deficit and grow our debt. We need to strike the right balance between social welfare and fiscal prudence." Androulakis hopes that he will be able to win the moderates in his party and emerge victorious. He has also gambled on the fact that he has good relations with both wings of the party. "We need someone who can unite the Liberals after this race," he said. "We do not need a leader who will from day one alienate a significant portion of our voters. I believe I am the only one who can unite both centrists and leftists."

Tokyo, Empire of Japan
January 1, 2020

As morning had arrived, the New Year's celebrations had died down as people across the Empire celebrated with family and friends by passing out nengajō cards and young children being given otoshidama money. Traditional games were being played and the new year enjoyed. His Majesty the Emperor would offers prayers of worship in the early morning to the gods of Ise Shrine, the Imperial mausoleum, and the Four Quarters. Later people would flock to three Shinto and Buddhist shrines to pray for good luck in the new year.

For Prime Minister Abe, it was a good time to relax and spend time with his family. With the whole world celebrating some way or another, there was little concern for any problems. Sure His Majesty sought to pursue an ambitious diplomatic and economic agenda in the new decade, but there was plenty of time for that. As he stood looking out the window of his office sipping a hot cup of tea, Abe couldn't wait until he could return to his residence and finally celebrate the new year. But he had matters to attend to first. The Minister of Defense Field Marshal Kōji Yamazaki along with Minister of Foreign Affairs Fumio Kishida and Minister of Home Affairs Masatoshi Ishida were set to give their scheduled briefing in a few minutes. Thankfully, for the holiday the briefing had been scaled down to just the most important matters.

A few minutes later, the four men were sitting in the briefing room so the three ministers could give their reports. Ishida went first. "There are no new developments to report sir. Our ministry, like most of the country is focused on ensuring the celebrations go on successfully. However we are preparing to ramp up our efforts for the infrastructure project in Karafuto, which will allow us to employ several thousand locals."

"Very good." replied Abe, slightly disinterested.

Kishida was second. "As you are aware sir, I spoke with His Majesty last week about the proposed diplomatic efforts with the Soviet Union and later with the West. His Majesty wants to expand our cooperation, including security cooperation against China. Based on this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has translated that into a draft offer to the Soviets, which we hope to present them in the near future."

Abe nodded. "I believe I saw one of the drafts. It is perfectly acceptable to me. I know what people think of the Soviets, but we might do well to consider offering a mutual security pact. Once the holidays are done, you have my permission to send it over."

"A very good idea sir..." said Kishida. "Speaking of which, Emperor Fukunaga wanted me to pass this proposal over to you regarding the future of Manchukuo." Kishida proceeded to reach into his briefcase and pass the Prime Minister a file.

A file that was promptly cast aside by Abe without even glancing at it. Ever since the fall of the wider Japanese Empire, successive governments held onto their puppet leaders "in exile," should they ever become useful to the Empire again. Now they were more of a burden than anything else, living as elite nobles, all without any real power. The Empire had gradually stopped mentioning Manchukuo or the Reorganized Republic of China in propaganda, so they had been relatively forgotten by the public. But these semi-nobles continued to exist in Japan, creating people like the so called 'Emperor' Fukunaga whom claimed power over Manchukuo.

Fukunaga was the grandson of Pujie, first in line for the Qing throne after his brother Puyi. And from a number of factors, now the older man "reigned" over the Manchukuoan Government in Exile as it was called.

Abe just chuckled. "What does he want now, another mansion? We keep these power-hungry proxies around in case they could ever be useful, but they are never needed! We are at peace and shall keep things that way. Send the Manchurian my regards."

Kishida nodded. "Ah, before I forget, the Minister of Commerce and Industry wanted me to pass this information along to you sir. They have been under pressure from JAPEX to allow seismic mapping of the waters around Takeshima and Senkaku Islands in search of oil reserves, in addition to permits to drill oil off of the Senkaku."

A grin formed on Abe's face. "You know how I feel about our natural resources. We don't have enough! As far as I am concerned, JAPEX is clear to go tomorrow."

Kishida returned the grin. "Who doesn't want all the oil under the East China Sea? It may make the Chinese upset, but I am sure they will not cause too much trouble. I believe JAPEX has a ship already ready to begin within a week."

"Very well. Maybe this will be a good year for Japan after all." Abe said before he looked to Yamazaki. "What was the situation you wanted to speak to me about?"

Yamazaki nodded. "Sir, reports indicate that there has been a spike of violence in northern Chōsen. The Korean independence movement struck two of Imperial Army outposts in a coordinated attack yesterday, and late last night we foiled an assassination attempt on the Advisory Resident-General of Chōsen during a New Year's eve ceremony. The Kenpeitai has already launched a full investigation into the matter. The Resident-General is unharmed, but the President of Chōsen has requested that we increase our presence in strategic areas for the holidays."

After all the minor attacks of the past, this was nothing new for Abe. "It would be wise not to escalate things any further. I want to expand our mining operations in the north of the country, and we cannot do that if we are fighting a full-scale war with the insurgents. I will provide the Army with the 7th Field Kenpeitai to garrison Keijō (Seoul) and other strategic locations. Otherwise, the press is not to report on the assassination attempt. Let's not stir the pot more than we need to. I have ambitions elsewhere, and I have the sense that the Chinese will complain over the Senkaku already..." He paused, looking at the clock. It was already getting towards noon. "If that is all, go enjoy New Years already. We have much to do in the coming days if our agenda is to be met."

New Year's Address of the General Secretary of the United Soviet Socialist Republic to the Politburo

Image

"Good day, ladies, gentlemen, Comrades. I am very happy to speak with you once again, as we enter into a new decade of this momentous century.

During these days we reflect on the work done previously and the work we have yet to do. All of you have been very dedicated, professional and hardworking. For this, on behalf of the Communist Party and the peoples of the Soviet Union, I would like to express sincerest gratitude to you. Also, I would like to extend my gratitude for the great continued trust placed in me and the Core Leadership Committee by this most august body, and the expectations placed on us and the Party as a whole by people of all nationalities around the country, this trust is not only a tremendous encouragement to us to keep doing the work well, but also a heavy responsibility on our shoulders. This great responsibility shared by all of us in the Party, it is the responsibility to our nation, and our nation is a great nation.

In the modern period our lands and people experienced many hardships and difficulties. Countless people with the lofty ideals to realize the great revival of this land and it's liberation from under the oppression of the Tzar and his aristocratic elites rose to resist and fight, but failed one time after another until the great final triumph of the working masses under the leadership of our Great Revolutionary Father Lenin and the Communist Party. Since the founding of the CPSU, we have united and led the peoples of the Soviet Union to advance and to struggle tenaciously for a better future, transforming the impoverished, decrepit and backward Tzarist Empire into a Soviet Union that has become prosperous and strong with the march of decades. This great revival of our lands and peoples has demonstrated unprecedented bright prospects, a greater and better future is ever on the horizon. With the guiding hand of the Party, we shall make sure the people reach that golden horizon.

This great responsibility is the responsibility we have to the heroes of the Revolution and to the people. We must recognize that we are the inheritors of the great struggle and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for the liberation of the working masses, and the stewards of that legacy to those yet unborn. Our people are a great people. During the long process of history, by relying on our diligence, courage and wisdom, the Soviet people have made a good and beautiful home, where all it's ethnic groups live in harmony while we have fostered an excellent culture that never shall fade. Our people love life and they expect better education, more stable jobs, better incomes, more reliable social security, medical care of a higher standard, more comfortable living conditions, and a more beautiful environment. They hope that their children can grow up better, work better and live better. The people's yearning for a good and beautiful life is the goal for us to strive for and it shall guide or policy decisions going into the future.

Every bit of happiness in the world has to be created by diligent work and labor. Our responsibility is to rally and lead the whole Party and all of the Soviet peoples to further unleash and develop our productive forces, to work hard to resolve the difficulties faced by the working masses and steadfastly take the road to common prosperity with our Comrades in all the nations of the Comintern marching forward side by side with us in great determination. Our great common efforts and the ripe fruits they will bring shall give all the peoples of the Comintern an unshakable resolve and confidence in our great shared mission, as the leading nation of the Comintern, it is the duty of the Soviet Union to lead the way forward. This is the great responsibility of the Party. Our Party is a political party that serves the people wholeheartedly, not only the Soviet people, but all the peoples united under the banner of the Comintern. The party has led our great alliance to accomplishments that captured the attention of the world. We have every reason to be proud.

However, while we can be proud we can never be complacent, and we must never rest on our laurels or let our ideology become rigid or ossified, disconnected from the masses that Communism serves. Indeed, we must always see the truth when we look at the fact around us. We base our understanding of the world on Marxism, but no matter how great of a thinker he was, Marx could not have predicted the rise of the internet, of the automobile. The CPSU has adapted and brought Marxism forward, decade by decade, therein lies one of our great strengths.

Our Party also faces many challenges, and there are pressing problems within the Party that need to be resolved, especially deeply tragic problems such as corruption and bribe-taking that some party members and cadres have, regrettably, engaged in. The whole Party must be vigilant, and we must work with all Comrades in the Party to be resolute in ensuring that the Party supervises its own conduct, enforces discipline and effectively deals with the prominent issues of our time, earnestly improves the Party's work style and maintains close ties with the people. Our Party will then always be the firm leadership core for advancing the cause of Communism and building Market Economies for Social Benefit. The great strength of Communism comes from the people and masses. We deeply understand that the capability of any individual is limited, but as long as we unite as one, there is no difficulty that we cannot overcome. Individuals have limited time in work, but there is no limit in serving the people wholeheartedly.

Our responsibility is weightier than the great Ural Mountains, our journey ahead is long and arduous and foreign enemies are looking for any signs of weakness and disunity within our ranks to enact their evil schemes. We must always be of one heart and one mind within the Party and with the people, the Soviet People and the peoples of the Comintern. We must share weal and woe with the people, make concerted and hard efforts with the people, attend to our duties day and night with diligence and strive to deliver the best result. We must maintain our security and our resolve, just as we must reach out to our Comrades in the Comintern and beyond to forge new treaties and find new partners in friendship and trade, steering the world toward peace and plenty.

Thank you everybody!"

Proposal - Instituting the Party Commissariat for Internal Supervision.

Description The practical working style of the ruling party is a matter of life and death for the CPSU, and thus resolutely punishing wrongdoing and effectively preventing corruption is a major political task that our Party must excel at! The honest political working performance of CPSU members in official public positions is an important guarantee for adhering to Marxism-Leninism-Bukharinism, Khrushchev Theory and Kaganovich Thought fully adhering to the CPSU's principles and policies. It is imperative that members of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union embrace the lofty ideal of Communism and hold firm conviction in their belief, always maintaining their integrity in matters of official conduct and carry forward the CPSU's fine style of work while maintaining close ties with the masses that Communism serves.

In order to further promote the honest political duty performance of CPSU members we must tackle the problem of maleficence, corruption and graft in a comprehensive way, adopting both punitive and preventive measures focusing especially on prevention. A key factor in this will be strengthening internal supervision by instituting the Party Commissariat for Internal Supervision. This internal body will be tasked with enforcing internal rules and regulations as set by the CPSU Party Constitution and combatting malfeasance within the Party.

The Commissariat for Internal Supervision's Office of Inspection and Supervision will be divided into ten Supervision Divisions, four shall investigate cases at the vice-ministerial level and above while six investigate officials at the level of Oblast governors, vice-governors, chairs and vice-chairs of local OBKOM's, city and town mayors and deputies and rural Commune chairmen.

The Commissariat for Internal Supervision's Office of Discipline shall help educate Party members on their duties and rights, preserve party discipline, uphold party decisions, see that party members exercise their duties in accordance with the CPSU Party Constitution.

The Commissariat for Internal Supervision is an internal division within the CPSU and is thusly not a law enforcement agency, but it will be working closely with relevant law enforcement agencies to start formal investigations, make arrests or mete out punishments where that is required. When a Supervision Team gathers evidence of wrongdoing or corruption, the information is passed on to the Commissariat's Central Leading Group which will then call upon Law Enforcement personnel to be dispatched and aid in the investigation and, if needed, make formal arrests if the wrongdoing is so great that an official reprimand, loss of position or expulsion from the Party are insufficient punishment.

The German Empire
Image

January 1st, 2020
10:00 Hours Local Time
Imperial Parliament, Berlin
Main Parliament Chamber

The annual State of the Empire meeting- otherwise informally known as the Annual New Years' Parliament Meeting- is one of the biggest and most covered series political speeches and legislation-writing in the German Empire. It was the meeting where the Kaiser would give a speech on the annual goals of the nation, the world situation around it, and the setting of the annual government budget. And that was to be today. Already, Members of Parliament were swarming into the Main Parliament Chamber- informally known as the Adress Room- in preparation for the big event, which would promptly start at 10:30 AM. According to security, the Kaiser was already en-route to the building. The media sat in their gallery, waiting. At exactly 10:25 AM, two armed military guards dressed in formal uniforms opened the doors to the chamber. Everyone in the building went quiet, stood, and turned to face the front of the room as a sign of respect and attention. The Kaiser, followed by the Grand Chancelor and four more guards, entered the room and took their respective seats at the front. Everyone took their seats and remained quiet, while the media began informing their viewers that the Kaiser and Grand Chancelor had entered the room and the State of the Empire meeting was underway. The Kaiser then rose from his seat and moved toward the central podium, pulling out a file with his speech on it, and read.

"Grand Chancelor, Members of the German Parliament, fellow citizens of Germany and the world- I am honored to stand before you today to address the state of the German Empire and the world, as we enter a new decade of this 21st century. This is a time of great progress and a time of reflection. A time to plan and prepare. A time to look toward the future with hope. A hope that we are progressing toward a brighter future. We have every reason to be optimistic about a brighter future. Our economy- while still recovering from our mistakes in the 1980s- is still nonetheless recovering and prospering. We are pursuing better diplomatic relations with our neighbors, the Entente, and will be attempting to ease tensions with the Comintern. We will push forward more toward cleaner energy- solar, wind, hydroelectric, and nuclear. Together, our future is bright! Together there will be peace! Together we shall prosper for eras to come!

But these grand goals for Germany and the world are not without obstacles, challenges, and hurdles. We have yet a long and difficult road ahead of us. We must keep ourselves from squabbling and tearing each other to shreds over the slightest bit of political discourse. Political barriers must be torn down. Peace must be negotiated between the warring parties in the Serbia and the UAE and other territories that are currently engulfed in conflict and strife. International tensions must ease. I have- however- full confidence that we shall prevail- that together, we shall overcome these hurdles, and ensure this bright future is for us and the world. The first step to do such is to maintain peace and security in Europe and the world. In order to do so, we must promote international cooperation instead of conflict. We must expand the Entente and strengthen it. We will prevail. Democracy will prevail.

However, foreign policy is only one part of this plan. We must focus as much at home as we do abroad. For we should not forget, that any democratically-based system- whether it be a constitutional monarchy, republic, or direct democracy- is dependent on the people of the nation for which it rules, as what is a ruler but a glorified servant of the people? What is a leader but a shepherd of a nation? We must never forget Germany, as if we do not help ourselves, we cannot help our allies and neighbors. That is why I believe that we should focus on restructuring our economy and safeguarding it. We should further encourage global trade in order to keep our markets running along and to bolster our economy. But what use are goods and services if there is nothing to support it? Infrastructure and energy production are as vital to our economy as the goods and services that which we provide, for without them, workers cannot work, and goods will not move. But once more, we shall prevail- but only together.

I foresee a bright and grand future ahead of us, should we wish to put effort to reach out and snatch it. Should we wish to work for it- work for Germany, Europe, and the world. For our children. Our family. Our future. The grand pathway in front of us is not an easy one. It is quite difficult and may- in some aspects- seem impossible. But it is the impossible that is worth striving for and the impossible for which we can achieve together. For not but nearly fifty-one years ago, humanity first set foot on the moon. This was not a journey undertaken alone, but with international cooperation. And so I repeat once more- together we shall prevail. Do what is seemingly impossible. What is best for Germany and the world. Together, there is a bright future for us all! Thank you all for your time and I wish you all a good day."

He then promptly took his seat, applause rising from around him. The meeting would continue on for the next several hours, lasting until past dusk, discussing plans and legislative possibilities, and passing a few minor ones here and there. The New Year in Germany's political realm had officially begun. Despite these promises of peace, there were many within Germany- especially within the military's ranks- that were concerned that war was approaching and too little action was being done too late.

Situation Room Alpha, Level -3

The top six members of the Imperial German Armed Forces met with the Kaiser in a situation of utmost secrecy on the night of January 7th, 2020. Their purpose for the meeting was one of the silent preparation for war. A war which none wanted. A war which some saw as unavoidable. And so the meeting began. Discussing possible war plans. Nuclear strategy. Diplomatic alternatives. Justification of war. Intelligence gathering missions. Espionage. Chances of success. Contingency plans. Deception tactics. The meeting lasted well into the night. It was around three in the morning when they departed. Everyone was tired, but slept soundly, knowing they had a plan for war. Knowing that defeat was not certain. Knowing that through planning for war, there was a chance for peace.

Canberra, Australia, Australasia
January1, 2020

Outside the skies grew darker by the second as the hum of bugs and birds slowly trickled off. The evening news would bring the seemingly calm and peaceful atmosphere in the city to a swift end for many for only moments prior, the King had been slain while attending a New Year Dinner in New Caledonia on the edges of the Kingdom. The death of the popular King would send grief rippling through the entire Australasian Kingdom and, indeed, the whole world. The hardest hit, however, would be the now King of Australiasia Alexander Hope along with his family.

Canberra Palace, Canberra, Australia, Australasia

Alexander sat back in his chair in the bunker command center underneath the palace. Only an hour before, Alexander had been planning a trip to Sydney with his mates from university. Now, he sat without his father and the weight of the world on his shoulders. His whole life, he had been preparing for this moment. From birth he had been raised to rule Australasia, yet, he never had expected this day would come so soon.

The moments following the death of his father had been a blur. Alexander had been grabbed by the security team and physically carried to an armored SUV and rushed back to the Palace and immediately moved down to the command center in the bunker. His mother had been with his father along with two of Alexander's siblings but, thank God, they were reported to be unharmed. His remaining two siblings were both moved to the bunker as well but kept in the living quarters and out of the command center. Newly appointed Prime Minister, Andrew Hastie, had been waiting for Alexander in the bunker and offered his condolences before laying out the information that was available.

The Director-General of the Office of National Intelligence, Nick Warner, stood and walked to the screen saying "Sir, we have every reason to believe that those responsible are affiliated with a resurgent New Caledonian group Front de liberté de Nouvelle-Calédonie or New Caledonian Freedom Front. The assassin himself was captured by on-site security forces but is refusing to cooperate. Your mother and siblings are being escorted by the air force back here to the mainland and your other family members are likewise under close guard. The Governor-General of New Caledonia has issued a temporary martial law order in the region and is requesting that you grant him the necessary powers to extend it for longer than the 48 hours he can unilaterally declare for."

Sitting back in his chair, Alexander rubbed his temples before saying "Very well. Tell the Governor-General that he has the green light for whatever he needs. I also want ASIO to focus on this new group." Taking a sip of water he continued "and I want the military to move to alert status orange. Make it very clear to anyone who might use this tragedy to their advantage that we will not be messed with. Now, is there anything else?"

"Just a few messages that have come in so far for you sir, the two major ones so far are from her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II and the German Kaiser. I will have them sent to you to reply at your pleasure." The Foreign Minister, Winston Peters, said.

Alexander stood up saying "Thank you all. I will go take care of those messages and see to my family, please keep me informed of any updates."

Pulling Prime Minister Hastie to the side, Alexander said "Mr. Prime Minister, it goes without saying but I have always liked you and think you have done a great job so I intend to keep you in your position. You're one of the few men I have grown to trust."

"Thank you, sir, it means a lot and I promise to serve with honor." Hastie replied.

Messages

“My dear Alex, I am deeply saddened by the loss of your father. However, I know that it can't compare to what your feeling now, nor to your shock at the suddenness of the need to rule. However, I was in this situation before, so I can assure you that you will manage as I once have. You have Windsor blood flowing in your veins and, most importantly, God above guiding you my dear boy. Now, lead your people and nation with strength and know that the entire family and the Commonwealth are with you and your family in prayer and in our hearts.”
- Elizabeth II

“On the behalf of the entire nation of the German Empire, I, Kaiser Georg Friedrich, do so humbly offer my highest condolences to the Royal Family of Australasia and the people of their nation over the loss of King Victor II, and may he forever rest in peace. I also would like to send my best wishes to King Alexander I, and long and prosperous may his reign be.”
- Kaiser Georg Fiedrich

Republic of Argentina

Image

Republican Council for Security and the National Interest

The CRSIN (its Spanish abbreviation) was the supreme body in the Republic. Whilst the Congress made policy, and the Presidential Council executed policy, the CRSIN decided which policies the government would support- and in the Republic of Argentina, the government's will is government policy. It was made up of some Presidential Council members, but also officials from the intelligence services, military, and other institutions.

President Alberto Fernández nodded to his colleagues, and they all sat down for the weekly meeting of the CRSIN.

"Now, first order of business- the People's Army has expanded, moving to the Chilean and Bolivian borders. We have reports of Atacama people joining the Army and giving them information of the terrain- information that we don't have."

"The Atacama?" General Correa, the Chief of the General Staff, muttered. "My men have had experience fighting them. They joined the FPLP- the precursor to the People's Army- as they were dissatisfied with our Integration Policies."

Everybody around the table knew that the Integration Policies, initiated by President Videla in the late 1970s, were essentially policies discriminating against indigenous people who refused to leave their lands for more urban areas. Discrimination included massacres and arrests, all of which were kept secret. Some 10,000 people died, including some over the border into Chile.

"We have the upper edge." Correa continued. "We have a specialised battalion of mountain troops, many with homes in the mountains, in our Military Police. We have rockets, drones, aircraft, artillery. They cannot hide from us."

"Are you talking about genocide, then?" Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero had always opposed the military's tough tactics, and he was one of the most influential in the civilian side of government. "How will the rest of the world-"

"The rest of the world do not need to know." Correa interjected. "It will be completely secret. Within weeks the Atacama will swear loyalty to the Government of Argentina." He turned to President Fernández.

Fernández glanced around the table. Finally, he sighed.

"I cannot risk more instability." he said finally. He nodded. "Do it."

TOP SECRET
FOR CLEARED EYES ONLY

The Mountain Battalion of Military Police are to move to the northwest of Argentina immediately. Clear the region of Atacama people who are rebelling against our government. You will be supported by all military resources necessary.

The Secretariat of Intelligence (SIDE) will deal with rebels over the border into Chile. Side has clearance to use any and all force necessary to complete this task.

Long live the Republic. Long live President Fernández.

London, England, Jan. 1

"As if the list of my issues couldn't get any worse, the King of Australasia gets shot. Well, that's an excellent way to start the New Year." Tim Farron has a habit of saying his thoughts out loud, especially in cases where he is under some levels of stress. And stress he was under. A divided coalition in Parliament, the assassination of a King of a major Entente member state, and inheriting a 10-year spanning war is not good for a man. Let's start with the first, shall we?

In 2019, the current Prime Minister, Benoît Hamon, called for elections after announcing intent to resign due to health conditions. Four parties took the lead early, as is usual for them, and the elections came to be dominated by the Center-Left National Socialist Union, the Center-RIght Moderate Unionist Party, the Agrarian Farmers Party, and the centrist Party in Support of the People. During the 2010s, the NSU has constantly had 340+ seats in Parliament, having rid off the wave of mass Socialist support that occurred when the East African War broke out, rallying being NSU Prime Minister François Hollande just in time for elections, giving them 370 seats and a supermajority in Parliament.

In fear of another Socialist majority in Parliament, the 3 Liberal and Conservative Parties combined into a coalition known as the "Conservative Bloc", all nominating the French Liberal-Conservative François Fillon of the MUP-C as their candidates for Prime Minister, while the NSU put up Jeremy Corbyn of the NSU-DS, alienating some of the voter base with his more leftist views. However, a Socialist victory was still predicted until a leadership change was forced in the MUP due to the sudden death of Fillon. Settling on the MUP-L Tim Farron as a compromise candidate, along with changing party stances on issues such as social and economic policy, calling for more state control over healthcare and economic matters, moving more to the French system of Dirigisme than the English system of Rhine Capitalism.

Overall, the promise to end the war in East Africa within 2 years, the commitment to détente with the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and subtle tiredness of Socialist rule gave the Conservative Bloc 313 of the 550 Parliament seats, with the MUP taking 257 of those, the PSTP taking 37, and the Agrarians taking 19. Meanwhile, the NSU has taken the other 237 seats. This has left the government unstable, as a defection from the PSTP could begin to create issues with the more liberal agenda of the MUP-L ministry. Additionally, while the MUP-L has the Prime Minister, the government is still heavily controlled by the more conservative Center faction, posing yet more issues as future events unfold. But, that is for the future to observe.

How the world turns

German Kaiser announces ambitious policy goals moving forward
Image
The Reichstag will soon convene on the formulation of
new political action plans.

At the yearly State of the Empire Address in the Reichstag in Berlin, German Kaiser Gerog Friedrich announced an ambitious set of goals for the following decade. Even before assuming his place on the German throne, the then Prince was famous for his commitment to green energy technologies, having donated money to a number of promising independent research projects as well as appearing at fund-raising galas in Anglois, Columbia, Nordbight and Sweden alike, makes his announcement on investment into Germany's Green Energy sectors less than surprising. Still, Green party representatives in the Reichstag are expected to lobby against the extension of nuclear power, still, they are as things stands unlikely to gain enough sway to stop planned expansions.

Other than energy policy, the Kaiser also discussed economic reform, however with little detail as of yet, as well a voicing a diplomatic commitment to resolve the conflict in the Balkans and work toward détente with the Comintern. While the goal of peace in Europe was welcome by large segments of the German population, especially among the youth, it may alienate the Oster exile community. The people who left or were expelled from the former German territories taken by Poland during the Second Great War, particularly from East Prussia are an influential voting block on the German right and have a strong connection to the officer-corps of the German army, many of whom descend from old junker-families.

Globo reporters in Germany are monitoring government talks, expect new articles regarding Germany's economic reforms when those are formalized in the Reichstag.

Half a million people in Africa suffer damage to their homes and properties in wake of storms.
Image
People fleeing their flooded homes in
Mozambique in the wake of the storms.

A severe thunderstorm moved across southern Mozambique and then moved further inland across Iriphabuliki, bringing with it great amounts of rain and hail. An estimated 500 000 people were afflicted in the regions hit by the storm and unconfirmed reports from the governments of Iriphabuliki and Mozambique put the combined death toll at 47 people.

Rescue efforts are currently ongoing with about 2000 volunteers with support from police in Mozambique and over 3500 volunteers aiding victims in the regions of Iriphabuliki hit by the storm. The government in Egoli is currently trying to clear debris and make the roads in the affected regions passable again. The rains caused severe problems regarding traffic, cars were stopped by trees fallen across the roads and several bridges were damaged as rivers burst their banks.

Throughout Mozambique red alerts were issued by police along several of the country's rivers as they neared flood stage and over 8000 people were evacuated from their homes. Zimbabwe in turn saw it’s heaviest rainfall in almost 20 years and fears are now spreading across the country that a storm may cause similar flooding and devastation leading to calls on Harare from concerned citizen to prepare for such an eventuality.

Japanese hydrocarbon expeditions could harm stability in Asia, experts say.
Image
Japanese Government Spokesman Yogi Takuro

The Japanese Empire is moving to reduce it's reliance on energy imports according to a press-conference held by government spokesperson Yogi Takuro. While the details of these policy plans have yet to be announced, most expect the JAPEX Corp to receive extensive permits to conduct exploratory drilling in northern Karafuto and perhaps also in the Senkaku Isles EEZ. This may prompt a negative reaction from Nanjing in light of the Senkaku Isles Dispute, ongoing from 1895 until this very day. While there have been no Japanese announcements of any additional troop deployments in the Senkaku isles, some experts warn of the potential of Chinese provocations in the region by way of harassing Japanese fishing vessels.

There have been no further word regarding the potential of a new Soviet-Japanese trade agreement, hinted at during the Niigata Summit between the two nations in 2016 where representatives made the announcement of having discussed the extension of the pipeline running from the Kovyktinskoye Gas Field to Vladivostok all the way down to Busan in the Republic of Chosen along with starting extraction operations in the Chayandinskoye Gas Field. The status of the agreement remains unknown, with it being possible the two nations shelved the talk in order not to provoke Chinese economic retaliation, some experts however claim that with Japan moving to conduct exploratory drilling in the Senkakus, a new phase of negotiations with the USSR may be on the horizon.

Still no major international response to the Bengali Migrant Crisis
Image
Scores of people continue fleeing the dire
economic situation in Bangladesh

The Bengali Refugee Crisis has only continued to spiral out of control, with over a million Bengalis fleeing into Myanmar and India only within the last 6 months. This has only continued to strain the Indian economy, with their migrant population now only increasing at a faster and faster rate. Notable Indian politicians are calling for a summit in the League of Nations on how to solve this humanitarian crisis that looks as though it is only going to get exponentially worse in the next few months as the Bangladeshi economy continues to falter while the country's environmental problems continue to deteriorate. The Indian province of West Bengal, which already has quite a high population density, has been struggling to deal with the continuous influx of people that continuously arrives from the east.

Both India and Bangladesh are calling for an international response, particularly from the West, but there are many who are skeptical. Notable Bengali critics look at what happened in UAR, and use that as evidence that the west will continue to turn a blind eye to disasters across the globe. This has seen an increase of skepticism in South Asia, that some say could lead to more radical beliefs in this particularly unfortunate corner of the globe at this time. The Indian PM is to be in Indonesia for an diplomatic meeting within the next few months, and the talks are expected to focus of India's relations with Southeast Asia, the Bengali migrant crisis and the route a number of them are taking through Indonesia to Australasia, and economic relations between the two. For all we know, growing anti-western views might expand out of Bangladesh in the coming years.

Greece announces economic reforms while passing polarizing border control laws
Image
The Hellenic Coast Guard has borne the brunt of
the mass-flight from the violence in the UAR

Greek Prime Minister Bogdanos has recently announced a number of economic reforms, including a corporate income tax reduction as well as reductions of the income tax rate. The initiative has been welcomed by representatives of major international banks as well as large businesses and is expected to bring new investments into the country, primarily from Entente allies such as Italy, Germany and Anglois. A significant section of the new reform-package seems to especially target remote workers and set up Greece as an attractive destination for digital nomads and young professionals supporting themselves through remote work using digital platforms. While many have praised this move as forward-thinking it's practical effects remain to be seen.

At almost the very same time however, Greek Minister of Public Security and Immigration, Makis Voridis announced a new comprehensive border protection policy. This new policy-package aims to harden Greece's borders against the influx of refugees from the UAR, whose numbers were expected to rise significantly come spring as sailing conditions improve. The new laws, which among other things authorize pushbacks have been criticized by a number of human right's organizations as unfair while the minister's words as he made the announcement has been criticized by left-wing politicians both in Greece and abroad.

Korean economic growth less than expected as sporadic violence continues in the North.
Image
Despite successful counter-insurgency operations
remnants of the Korean Liberation Army continue to operate

The arrest of Han Sangwoo and several other central figures of the Korean Liberation Army in the wake of the Seoul Bombing of 2018 which left 41 Korean police officials and Kempeitai agents dead has seemingly not deterred the remaining KLA cells in northern Chosen from continuing the fight against the Korean government and it's Japanese allies. With two recent high-profile actions attributed to KLA activity, namely the still ongoing Nampo dockworker's strike and the disappearance of two Japanese engineers working for local mining companies.

Song Jian, government spokeswoman for the Republic of Chosen has officially stated in a recent press-conference that the Republic's security forces alongside their Japanese partners are working swiftly to establish "lasting order" and to "eliminate any remaining terrorist elements in the Northern part of our country." The Japanese Kempeitai is expected to bolster it's presence in the Protected Republic of Korea over the next few months as attempts are made by Korean and Japanese security forces to isolate and destroy KLA cells in the country, focusing first on major cities such as Pyongyang and Chongjin. Korean authorities also called on China to "stop funding terrorism in Korea." Korean authorities have long accused China of funding the KLA, something Nanjing has fervently denied and called "nothing but baseless scapegoating."

Baathist forces inch closer to Khalidiyah
Image
Loyalist troops recently took full control of Habbaniyah
and the Al Taqaddum airport

Loyalist troops have made gains in their advance towards Ramadi as the Baathist regime attempts to take the city that houses the headquarters of the Shiite Liberation Coalition. Advancing along the Euphrates with armored and air-support, Baathist forces took control of the abandoned Al Taqaddum airbase and the town of Habbaniyah from where they have begun shelling SLC defensive strongpoints on the approaches to Ramadi. The UAR's Air Force has reportedly once again been using barrel-bombs in Ramadi over the last week, their inaccuracy often leading to civilian casualties during the airstrikes while little damage is done to any real defensive positions. With the SLC having been severely weakened after the UAR focused it's resources against it around half a year ago, the Baathist loyalists seem on the verge of securing full control over southern Iraq.

Meanwhile the Battle of Mosul seems to be going in the favor of the Salafist Army of the Prophet, having put up stiff resistance to the advance of the People's Army of South Kurdistan. According to the most recent reports, the Kurdish communist forces have dug in at Kal Teppe and Khorsabad, shifting forces away from the Mosul Front. Where these troops which included a large number of BMP-1 and T-72 tanks rumored to have been delivered from the PRK and USSR will be redeployed to is unknown. A number of analysts have however anticipated them to be sent against Al-Iskandarun. Such an offensive would lead to the first major clash between the Hashemite restorationists and the Kurdish communists, with one of the major Entente powers, namely Italy, being the primary foreign backer of the Hashemites, these clashes may worsen the tensions in Europe over the ongoing insurgencies in Bosnia and Kosovo.

Dozens of high-ranking Soviet officials arrested in CPSU’s anti-corruption drive.
Image
High-profile arrests have been made across the USSR

Last week, the number of CPSU officials arrested in the anti-corruption crackdown announced by the government rose to 203 after Aleksandr Bogovich, vice-chair of the Mogilev Oblast's OBKOM was arrested along with seven other local officials for charges of corruption which are now pending investigation by the Police. Anti-corruption drives are not new to the Soviet Union but that so many arrests were made in so short a time is almost unprecedented. The persons detained include two ministers but with corruption being such a widespread structural problem in the Soviet administration, the anti-corruption crackdown is not simply an effort to reduce corruption and graft but also has a significant political implication.

According to a number of experts, the new anti-corruption drive is an attempt at institution-building by Zyuganov. By signaling that no one is "off limits" and by targeting retired officials, the campaign is aimed to reduce the influence of party "elders" who were no longer in office but nevertheless wanted to interfere in political affairs and to extinguish vestiges of influence of people close with former General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev. Gorbachev's time in power saw a marked increase in patronage appointments that spanned the military, the oblasts, and the party apparatus. Patron-client relationships, rather than merit, became the primary factor in securing promotions, giving rise to the formation of internal factions based on personal loyalty.

By reversing this part of Gorbachev's legacy, some observers believe Zyuganov would be better equipped to discipline and unite the party under a common agenda. Proponents of this view believe that the ultimate aim of the campaign is to strengthen the role of institutions and stamp out factionalism and networks of personal loyalty, thereby creating a more united CPSU organization and achieving greater efficiency for governance.

Rise of Morocco continues.
Image
Sultan of Morocco announced a day of celebration
in the country

Morocco has seen unprecedented international praise by many international organizations, most notably by the League of Nations Global Commission on Human Rights, for the expansion of their laws on civic liberties. These increased rights of expression have been widely celebrated in Morocco by supporters of the monarchy, but critics, both in the country and abroad, have widely seen these reforms as not enough, pointing out the fact that it still allows journalists to be widely punished for not abiding to the rules of the monarchy. Whilst their are a number of vocal critics of Morocco's politics at this point in time, their international reputation has generally seen a positive trend with their dedication to green energy, and their expansion of civic rights.

Still, the Rabat Solar Plant has yet to attract any significant foreign investment. The widely popularized megaproject aimed at laying the groundwork for wide-scale exploitation of the great potential Morocco has for the production of solar energy. The construction of the first phase of the Rabat Solar Project has been underway since 2018, Rabat I would bring about 580 MW of power to the region. A step towards the collective goal of 2500 MW or above, though they were still far from it. With Rabat I soon to be online, it may attract foreign investment the Moroccan government hoped for when announcing the megaproject, should it give the expected result.

The Far East is usually described as a playground for the Chunghwa Minkuo and the Dai Nippon Teikoku, but the region holds an outlier of a dying empire, and one of its shining cities. The Free City of Singapore, one of the constituent nations of the United Anglois Kingdom, is one of the largest cities in Southeast Asia, with a population of nearly 5.4 million people and a GDP of almost 400 billion dollars, mainly doing to Anglois business investments and the buildup of Her Majesty's Naval Base, Singapore. It sits on the Strait of Malacca as the Eastern Outpost of the UAK, the main point of the Entente's influence on Asian geopolitics.

Politics in the region are different than most of the other constituent Kingdoms. Instead of following the more liberal France or the more conservative England on the political scene, Singapore has been more in line with the socialist stance in Wales. What makes it different is the existence of other political parties, and the nonexistence of the MUP and the NSU in regional politics, although parties here usually align with the 2 parties on the mainland. There are 3 main parties in the Free City, with the first being the ruling Social Democratic Worker's Party, aligned on the national scale as a member party of the NSU-R. They have ruled Singapore for the last 25 years, cultivating a small welfare state within the Anglois Kingdom. The next is the conservative People's Party of Singapore, mainly made up of the elites of the Free City. However, they have a very paternalistic attitude when it comes to political thinking, based on the theories of Prime Minister Disraeli. They normally align with the MUP-L. Last is the right-wing National Party, which promotes Singaporean nationalism within the Anglois Kingdom, although not complete independence. They align with the MUP-CP.

Economically, the Free City of Singapore is one of the most industrialized areas in the Empire, rivaling the cities of Lyon and Manchester, and only being beaten by London, Paris, and Birmingham. Singapore is the electronics specialization area within the Empire, one of the main sources of oil for industries in England and Northern France, and the main hub for biotechnological developments. Along with this, due to Anglois' lenient control of the city, it has become a hub for Entente business investments, mainly by French companies looking to expand into Malaysian and Southeast Asian markets. Also aiding in the economics are the investments by the Ministry of Defense, focusing on building a large carrier-capable dockyard and expanding the port facilities of both HMNB Singapore and the civilian port.

Singapore is an economically prosperous city within an economically prosperous empire. It goes into 2020 under a sheath of stability. Whether that remains is to be seen.

January 2, 2020, HMS Hood, Portsmouth, England

Duke of Wellington on sea trials

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Portsmouth was busy, but for different reasons than usual. Usually, Portsmouth is the retrofitting stop for the Anglois Royal Navy, used to modernize the ships of the world's 2nd most powerful naval force. However, after a year and a half of sea trials, the most modern ship in the Anglois Royal Navy, the aircraft carrier HMS Duke of Wellington. Designed to compete with the new Columbian super-carriers as well as allow for the phasing out of the William Pitt class carriers, the Duke of Wellington contains modern catapults, an EMPAR phased array radar system, a DRBV 26D air search radar, and a complement of 40 aircraft, mainly Rafale Ms but capable of transferring to the in-development Future Combat Air System.

Admiral Radakin, commander-in-chief of the Royal Navy, was watching the excitement from the bridge of the decommissioned Anglois battlecruiser Hood tied up as a museum ship. Citizens lining the dockyards, the crew looking down from the deck, and flags fluttering in the air. "Westminster must have really wanted this to be a show of pride, apparently." A nearby maintenance worker overheard this and responded; "Well, Admiral, the pride of the Anglo-French Armed Forces is the Royal Navy. Makes sense to show off its newest toy." "Adm. Radakin settled in his chair. "Hmm, as a member of the Royal Navy, I know that better than anyone."

Events proceeded as they normally would. The ship's sponsor, Charles Wellesley, the 9th Duke of Wellington, made a brief speaking point, and the former Commander of the Royal Navy, Admiral of the Fleet (Ret.) Michael Cecil Boyce transferred the ship's command to its first Captain, Guy Robinson, gave an address, and issued the ship's first orders, which stated in short: "Make due haste for Her Majesty's Naval Base, Malta, and join the Anglois 4th Fleet." The ceremony ended with the Duke of Wellington giving the first order to the crew: "Man our ship and bring her to life!" With this, everyone ran off to their stations, and by 45 minutes later, the ship was leaving Portsmouth Naval Yard on the way to Malta.

The German Empire
Image

February 4th, 2020
12:00 Hours Local Time
Hohenzollern Castle, Baden-Württemberg

The Kaiser- Georg Friedrich- sat at his desk, clearing out old papers and pondering how to fix the age-old dilemma of warming up cold international relations. This was going to be especially difficult, as there was still plenty of tension between the nations in question- that being the USSR and Poland. He pulled up a stack of papers from a drawer and began sifting through them, thinking all the while, setting aside what was still relevant or useful, and shredding what was not. Relieving the tensions between the nations- he thought- would definitely open up trade corridors, allowing him to help improve the German economy. The question was how should it happen? It was at this point that Kaiser Georg had picked through half the pile. In his hands was a copy of an invitation to last year's Imperial New Year's Ball. He was about to shred the paper when he stopped and thought for a moment. A ball and a diplomatic summit. Perhaps a military parade too. That was something that could work. He put down the paper, onto the pile on his desk- stood up, began to pace, and continued to ponder the idea. The event would have to be planned to every detail, in order to prevent diplomatic action from faltering and to prevent espionage from the less trustworthy attendees.

After about five minutes, he had a plan formulated. Germany would formally announce the diplomatic event- which the Kaiser called "The Grand Summit of 2020 "- about a month and a half ahead of time, inviting major powers from abroad (consisting of the members of the Entente, Columbia, Poland, the USSR, Australasia, and Japan). This invitation would not mean that only the nations invited could attend, it just meant they had a reserved slot- should they wish to attend. Each attending nation could send up to two units of no more than 25 people each to participate in the parade. The diplomats would attend the parade in Berlin on day one, before they would board a train for Hohenzollern Castle the next day, where the ball and summit would take place. They could then stay as long as they needed to privately discuss matters with various German officials.

Satisfied, the Kaiser began to send word to his foreign ministry, who would then contact the international community. The event was then set to begin on March the 30th. And as such, the invitations were already making their way to the respective invited nations, in order to give them sufficient time to consider their attendance before the event was formally announced. With this completed, Kaiser Georg began to turn his attention back to the task at hand- clearing out his desk of old papers.

PROPOSAL - Authorization of Nuclear Power Station Construction Contracts to Privative Companies

DESCRIPTION - In order to accommodate for the increase of economic activities in Germany, more energy sources must be provided to support potential industry growth. As we are making the shift from coal and oil power toward more renewable sources, we should increase the amount of power stations in Germany. As government-issued contracts are already in place for solar, hydroelectric, and wind power from 2019, we should authorize contracts for the construction of newer nuclear power stations, including one in Northern Bavaria to replace the (infamous and now decommissioned) Danube Nuclear Power Station.

A total of two large power stations should suffice to accomplish this goal. We have estimated that this will cost us around 10 billion Imperial Marks- a hefty price, but potentially worth the return, as they will not only support our growing industry, but also allow us to export clean energy to our neighbors. This will also decrease our dependency on foreign oil- ensuring us safety from any spikes in oil price due to the ongoing wars in the Middle East. Of course, we will pay this out over the course of the construction, as not to deduct from other government projects. The power stations are as follows: 2 Power Station with a nameplate capacity of 3,775 MWe.

RESULTS OF VOTE -
For: 563
Opposed: 242

LEGISLATION PASSED Jan. 14, 2020.

PROPOSAL - Authorization of Government Financial Incentives to Promote Infrastructure Development

DESCRIPTION - In order to allow for industrial expansion, we must first expand our infrastructure, for as our Kaiser has pointed out, industry is useless without infrastructure to support it. Therefore, we must expand our infrastructure, in order to accommodate for this growth. What better of a way to do it than by handing out financial incentives of about one-hundred million Imperial Marks every other quarter to the top five companies making our infrastructure more reliable? This should- in theory- make our infrastructure more reliable and encourage competition in the markets, allowing for growth.

RESULTS OF VOTE -
For: 532
Opposed: 273

LEGISLATION VETOED Jan. 28, 2020. Under revision as of Jan. 15, 2020.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

Palace of Soviets - Moscow - USSR

Another 16-hour workday was coming to a close for the General Secretary of the Soviet Union as he sipped his tea and sighed, turning the old leather office chair around and gazing through the large glass window at his back and drank in the lights of the Soviet capital. It was a city of contrasts, founded in the 12'th century it had been attacked, conquered, plundered and burned down time and time again only to be rebuilt. The Kremlin and the Red Square were often considered to be among the most famous architectural symbols of Russia. For a first timer, no visit to Moscow could ever have been complete without a visit to the area. Still, Nikolai Bukharin made sure that St. Basil’s Church, the Spasskaya and Borovitskaya towers and other buildings in the area stand dwarfed by the great structures meant to be an unmistakable symbol of communism and the Soviet Union, chief of which was the building that Zyuganov currently sat in. When completed in the mid-1950's it stood as the tallest building in the world for a while at 415 meters when including the 90-meter statue of Lenin which crowned it. Much of the city was by 1960 unrecognizable when compared to 1930. The Master Plan for the Reconstruction of the City of Moscow, devised by a commission under Premier Lazar Kaganovich and co-signed by GenSec Bukharin and Vyacheslav Molotov in 1935, made sure of that, almost only the Kremlin and St. Basils Cathedral remained after the downtown area and surrounding districts were reshaped with monumental Socialist Classicist edifices and wide boulevards. It involved sixteen major highway projects, road and rail construction and a total of fifteen million square meters of new housing to accommodate a total population of approximately five million. Beyond this architectural testament to the Bukharin-Era were the mass-housing districts and mikrorayons of the Khrushchev Era and further beyond stood the modernist architecture of the modern, global world built since the time of Gorbachev with the Moscow International Business District and the Skolkovo Innovation Center as the main examples. He sipped once again from the now cold cup of tea as someone knocked on the door.

"Yes?" Zyuganov said absentmindedly as he turned around in his chair.

"Comrade General Secretary." He could hear the muffled voice of his chief secretary through the door. "The director of the NKVD is here to see you, shall I send him in?"

Putin? What does he want at this hour? Zyuganov thought to himself. "Go ahead, send him in."

A short while later the door opened and in strode the head of the Soviet security services. Zyuganov didn't rise, he simply poured the man a glass of water and gestured to one of the chairs in front of his desk. "Sit down, Comrade Commander."

"Thank you, General Secretary." Putin said flatly and sat down, gulping the glass of water in one go before rifling through his briefcase. "I hope I wasn't interrupting."

"Not at all, I was reading through the announcement for the 19'th Five Year Plan, the outline has been completed by the People's Ministry of National Development, it's about time that we announce it."

"I am only here to drop something off." Putin replied, looking up from his briefcase before placing down a thick folder with a red "top secret" stamped on it. "And, I'm here to ask you to consider what we talked about earlier." He said, putting an emphasis on the last sentence.

"I have to focus on the preparation for the announcement of the 19'th Plan and I'm meeting with the People's Minister of Development first thing in the morning for another review of it's component projects." Zyuganov said. "We can talk about your concerns next week when I meet with you and the People's Minister of State Security for the review of your proposed Operational Directives for the year ahead."

"Just... all right." Putin said with a sigh and rubbed his temples. "I am going to prepare a condensed outline and in the meantime, here's the overview of my proposal for our next meeting, I wish you a good evening and we'll see each other soon."

"Indeed we will, Comrade Commander. I will be hearing your concerns then, rest assured." Zyuganov said as Putin rose from his chair.

"Very good." Putin said, with a half-hearted nod. "I will speak to you about it after the meeting next week."
