Character Application and Information Sheet

NS Nation Name: Prince Kropotkin
Character Name: Ryan Gaines
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 57
Character Height: (why?) 6' 1"
Character Weight : (why???) 176 lbs
Character Position/Role/Job: House Majority Leader (2007-present), House Minority Whip (2002-2007), House Budget Committee Ranking Member (1995-2000), House Budget Committee Chair (1993-1995), House Democratic Caucus Chair (1989-1993), House Deputy Majority Whip (1987-1989), Congressman for Oregon's 3rd Congressional District (1981-present)
Character Country/State of Birth: Oregon
Character State of Residence: Oregon
Character Party Affiliation: Democrat
Faceclaim: Gary Cole (an actor who has played political roles [The West Wing, Veep] so there are plenty of "political" looking photos)

For strengths and weaknesses, I've included some quotes about Ryan.
Main Strengths:

"An experienced, capable and dependable legislator who's been one of the most respected voices on the budget process since coming to Washington. Friendly with his caucus members: even as Whip he never bullied or threatened, but rather tried to eke out compromises and find solutions that worked for everyone. He's far more interested in getting something done than shooting for the stars and coming away with nothing. A pragmatic progressive who, to hear him speak, clearly hasn't forgotten his liberal idealism, but is just well aware of the political limits of that idealism. A warrior for the middle-class, the environment, and the Democratic Party." -- Anonymous state Democratic party chair

"A reasonable guy who doesn't have to agree with you to buy you a round of drinks or shoot 9 holes. Respectful of Congressional traditions. Established solid bipartisan credentials during the 1990s budget negotiations. Enjoys a sensibly light touch on regulation when it comes to financial services. Not obsessed with social issues: he's not some feminist crusader, gay liberation fanatic, or craven water-carrier for the radical African-American activist community. And, admittedly, a very hard working campaigner who brings in a lot of party money." -- Anonymous Republican House member on the Budget Committee

Main Weaknesses:

"We wanted a Democratic leader. Instead we got Gaines. A craven, compromising corporate sellout who spends more time drinking in the clubhouse with Republicans and lobbyists than he does ever listening to the concerns of working class voters. Treats labor as nothing more than a source of campaign funds, not political ideas. He's willing to sell out entitlements, compromise on health care, and cut estate taxes; he's voted for expensive foreign wars, financial deregulation, and immunity for telecommunications companies. A pro-Israel ultra who basically copies his talking points on the Middle East direct from the AIPAC lobbyist's cocktail napkin. Misogynist creep who freezes out women in favor of his golf buddies." -- Anonymous House Democrat with the Congressional Progressive Caucus

"Has never met a tax increase he didn't like. Make no mistake, he might be all bipartisan shucks during the session, but come election time, he's as partisan a Democrat as they come. After spending nearly half his life in Congress any trace of independence has well and truly rotted away: a guy who was once pro-gun, moderate on social issues, and for a strong national defense, is now a solid gun-grabber who votes for gay marriage and late term abortion. Has no interest in cleaning up Washington: bounced checks in the Rubbergate scandal, seems to employ a permanent legal war team to contest FEC rulings, and is distinctly unenthusiastic about lobbying reform. Appears to possess a genocidal hatred towards tobacco farmers." -- Anonymous staff writer for the National Review

Biography: Ryan was born in Portland in 1950 and grew up in Multnomah County. His father ran a feed store, raised horses, and sold agricultural insurance, and his mother taught first-grade. He became active in politics in high school with Junior Statesmen of America for the Pacific Northwest, studied for a BS in Engineering at Portland State University, and got his JD at the University of Oregon School of Law.

After practising law (with a specialism in natural resources law) in the Portland area for several years, the 30 year old Ryan won an upset victory in the Democratic primary for the 3rd Congressional district over controversial incumbent Robert Duncan. National press (to the extent they covered it at all) portrayed the race as a young radical upsetting a Congressman with a history of staunch support for the Vietnam War, but local press felt that Duncan had been vulnerable in general and Ryan had simply seized on a weak primary field. In the 3rd, winning the Democratic primary was tantamount to winning the general, and Ryan has been elected every time since with at least 60% of the vote.

In any event, Ryan staked out a reliable Democratic voting record. He was a trenchant opponent of Reagan's tax-cuts and supply-side economics, and voiced concerns about mounting deficits, establishing a voice on the budget that became a theme of his career to date. He opposed Reagan doctrine foreign policy in Latin America, supported normalization of relations with China, and opposed the MX missile. He defended entitlements, advocated for health care and education spending, and was an early defender of gay rights (though he voted the Defense of Marriage Act in the 1990s, a position he has since recanted). He was a strong advocate of environmental protection and introduced some of the earliest legislation to reference climate change. He served on the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe. Early leadership positions included Deputy Majority Whip (1987-1989) and Chair of the Democratic Caucus (1989-1993).

Sometimes described in the media as an "Atari Democrat", Ryan advocated technological innovation and science funding, and was a major voice on telecommunications regulation and reform. On fiscal issues, he increasingly came to be associated with the New Democrats around the Democratic Leadership Council, and fellow members supported his rise on the Budget Committee (he had previously chaired an oversight subcommittee on small business). An early supporter of the not-Clinton campaign, he served as the Oregon party chair for the 1992 and 1996 campaigns. In 1993 he was Chair of the Budget Committee when President not-Clinton was inaugurated, the first Democratic President of Ryan's tenure. After the 1994 Republican Revolution he became Ranking Member. Through the 90s he worked on every budget and was a leading Democratic voice in favor of balancing the budget. In 2000, he was tipped a possible OMB Director should not-Gore win.

Like some other Western Democrats, Ryan had a pro-gun rights record in the 1980s, and was at one point rated "A" by the NRA. In the 1990s he began to favor regulation, voting for the Brady Handgun Violence Protection Act and the 1994 Crime Bill which contained the Federal Assault Weapons Ban, and against giving gun manufacturers immunity. He has now consistently been rated "F" by the NRA. His NARAL rating reflects "generally pro-choice" votes, another position on which his voting has become more in line with Democratic orthodoxy. Strongly pro-trade, he has voted in favor of NAFTA, CAFTA-DR, and Trade Promotion Authority.

He left the Budget Committee in 2001 to run for House Minority Whip, but had reckoned without the rapid ascent of labor darling Abilene Wilson-Carter. However, Dick Gephardt's retirement meant Wilson-Carter moved up to become House Minority Leader, and Ryan replaced her as House Minority Whip, where he soon faced the difficult task of keeping the Democratic Caucus together over the thorny issue of Iraq. Ryan personally voted for the AUMF, but has since turned against the handling of the war and supports a withdrawal. His style as Whip received some criticism for being too soft, more concerned with party unity than actually winning votes: the Republicans won several votes by 1 in the 108th and 109th Congresses (including CAFTA on which Ryan himself proved, embarrassingly, the deciding vote) and his conciliatory style was contrasted unfavorably with Republican discipline.

Nonetheless, he has proved a relentless campaigner. In the 2006 election cycle he could justifiably claim that no one had stumped more, traveled more, and in particular raised more than him. Hammering the economic message and trying to downplay divisions over Iraq, he helped the Democrats win their first House majority since 1995. Some on the left wondered at what cost: Ryan was seen to favor moderate candidates in candidate selection. Privately, he voiced doubts about the Fighting Dems strategy of picking candidates with military backgrounds; the strategy produced mixed results.

Expecting to become House Majority Leader in the new Congress, he faced down an unexpected progressive challenge from an anti-war Democrat, but won fairly comfortably.
Other Info: Ryan is married to Katie Morris, a former cheerleader. During the 1990s an affair with a health care lobbyist briefly damaged his reputation, but he and his wife reconciled. They have no children. Their dinner parties are considered staples of the Washington social scene.

Character Application and Information Sheet

NS Nation Name: The Sarangtus Lands
Character Name: Kensington Alphaeus Montgomery Eastmoreland-Northwoods
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 64
Character Position/Role/Job: Deputy Secretary of the Treasury (1974-1977), Vice Chairman of the US Chamber of Commerce (1977-1981), Secretary of the Treasury (1981-1989), White House Chief of Staff (1989-1993), CEO of New Imperial Capital (1993-1998), Mayor of New York City (1998-2006), CEO of the Kenny Northwood Foundation (2006-)
Character Country/State of Birth: New York City
Character State of Residence: New York City
Character Party Affiliation: Republican
Faceclaim: Richard Blumenthal
Main Strengths: Quite philanthropic, good strategist and organiser, extremely, extremely rich, major donor to the GOP and to conservative Dems, respected by DLC types, has lots of connections on the Hill, strong political experience, carried over respect from 9/11.
Main Weaknesses: Extremely narcissistic, New Imperial Capital has invested in some *very* dodgy companies in the past, with connections including but not limited to the killing union activists using death squads, child labour, conflict mineral trading, has a problem keeping it in his pants, hires a lot of lobbyists and is seen as a puppetmaster, had a financial interest in the Iraq War, silver spoon, very wealthy name, inherited a great deal of his wealth, seen as very cynical, seen by hard right types as too socially liberal, about to lose a lot of money.
Biography: Born to very very old money, English nobility who settled in NYC, immigrating after the English takeover of the city. They owned slaves and one ancestor was actually Mayor of the city, and joined the Patriots, bankrolling them and some of the members of the family - including a few of Kenny's direct ancestors - joining the Continental Army. As a result of this, he is a member of both the Sons of the Revolution and the Sons of the American Revolution. In fact, he is a member of the Bohemian Club too, along with many other such organisations linked to descendants of political and business power.

New Imperial Capital was founded c. 1850, and originally starts off as a bank in NYC, expanding its operations as time goes on. During the American Civil War, one of Eastmoreland-Northwood's ancestors fought as a general for the Union side. They were also a key ally of the unity government, despite normally being Democrats, and endorsed the National Unity ticket in 1864.

As a large and faithful ally of Tammany Hall, along with the massively increasing wealth and connections of his family, Roosevelt attempted to break apart New Imperial Capital, however had failed in court as New Imperial Captial was ruled not in violation of existing trust laws. They were also known for employing strikebreakers often, along with groups such as the Pinkertons, in their more Western holdings. The Eastmoreland-Northwoods were known as one of the families of the Gilded Age, and came out much better from it.

The family began to switch over to Republicans, some when Bryan was nominated multiple times, and other times when FDR was, seeing the Democratic Party as anti-business and bankrolling Republican candidates. One Eastmoreland-Northwood would later serve as a Congressman from New York, as the family grew in influence in the area and donated a great deal of money to the RNC over this time, becoming known party stalwarts.

It was in these circumstances that Kenny was born, as the second child of his parents. Kenny grew up with a great deal of support around him, getting private tutors and going to a preparatory school. He got involved in the Republican society of the University of Chicago, and became a protégé of Milton Friedman, where he adopted his economically conservative but socially moderate-to-libertarian stances. He read many books, and became influenced by the ideas of the contemporary libertarian movement, though did not veer into full-scale libertarianism.

He later became a professor in Chicago itself, writing papers backing up the slowly ascending monetarist and later neoliberal schools of economics. He spent some time in position, however Nixon's resignation was to change some things up. His father, a major donor to Nixon's 1960, 1968 and 1972 campaigns, was someone that Ford knew he had to get the support of, and nominated his son Deputy Treasury Secretary. As Deputy Treasury Secretary, he fought for a free market, laissez-faire approach, just like his superior Bill Simon. During this time he had a secret affair with a wealthy woman from another influential New York family.

After Ford's defeat, he was able to leverage his family's influence to become Vice Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, focusing on the political side of things and meeting with, and bankrolling, economically conservative Republicans and Democrats, making many friends, some of whom would later become influential people. As the largest indvidiual shareholder in New Imperial Capital, he also looked towards gaining political influence and so asked his brother (who was the CEO of the company) to buy a significant portion of News Corp, making it the second largest shareholder after the [not-Murdochs] themselves.

He supported Reagan in 1980, and helped direct some of the Chamber of Commerce's money to him, along with being decently close to him. For this, Reagan nominated him as Treasury Secretary, which he gladly accepted. He, as expected, championed Reaganomics, and oversaw all the Reagan tax cuts, being widely credited as the man who rebuilt the economy after Carter's failures. He personally worked with many people in Congress regarding welfare reform and other economic priorities and was widely viewed as the architect of Reagan's economic policies.

He considered running for President in 1988, but decided not to due to low polling, and felt that running for President would put his personal finances under scrutiny - as he still held a massive stake in New Imperial Capital, and was in fact the largest single shareholder though not taking the company on for political reasons. He instead decided to endorse his friend Cush Sr. in exchange for being made his Chief of Staff. And so he did, and so Cush won the primary. He used a great deal of his own money to help Cush Sr. in the election, and Cush Sr. was grateful for this, making good on his promise.

As Chief of Staff, he was seen as an effective operator, working with moderate Democrats to achieve Bush's aim, earning respect from his Democratic colleagues. He did still, nonetheless, fight vigorously for Cush Sr's reelection, though he said that Clifford was 'the best Democrat nominated in a while, though of course Cush was still preferable' in private to someone. The effort turned out to be in vain, though, but at least, Kenny remarked to himself, "We didn't lose to some McGovernite."

After Cush lost, he became the CEO of New Imperial Capital, growing it throughout the era and once again donating to both Republican and Democratic politicians that he found respectable. The company prospered, as it made large investments in technology stocks which made very good returns, expanding his wealth - which he used to make stock buybacks, increasing it further - though some of the companies he invested in had questionable practices, and he was later revealed, in a 2006 dossier, to have known about all of this and even sometimes encouraged it. These scandals include child labour, the use of conflict minerals, money laundering, working with criminal organisations, along with unconfirmed allegations of using slave labour.

In 1997, the Republican Mayor of New York City did not run for reelection. He spent tens of millions of his own money on the primary, being criticised by his opponent as attempting to buy it out, however he nonetheless won. In the general, he was seen to be behind, however something happened. A left-wing activist who ran for the Democratic primary lost narrowly, appealing his loss to the courts and meanwhile running with the nomination of the Liberal Party of New York, with Kenny getting the Conservative Party line, though the Conservative Party said they had reservations about his positions on certain social issues. The left-wing split allowed him to narrowly win 43-40-12. (OOC: This nearly happened IRL, the court stuff did happen though ultimately the activist decided not to split)

As Mayor, he focused on a tough-on-crime programme, implementing broken windows policing, further driving down the crime rate from his predecessor, while cutting taxes for New York's middle and upper class, though New York's working class looked on him with suspicion, as he pushed through increased charter schools and cuts to local welfare services. He kept his support among moderates through opposing busing and affirmative action, while largely using moderate, measured rhetoric and talked about a 'new, measured conservatism.'

Despite this, his reelection looked quite tough thanks to his centre-right policies which were out of step with many New Yorkers. He prepared a large war chest, and got ready for the fight of his political life. However, he began to notice the discord in the Democratic Party, as [not-Ferrer] and [not-Green] fought it out, depleting each other's resources. He could only sit back and watch what unfolded. On 9/11, he was seen to make an inspirational speech, and visited workers clearing out the tower, along with families of victims while fighting for large compensation to help them and funding the 9/11 memorial, even donating a significant amount of his personal funds to help those who suffered in 9/11. [not-Green] eventually won the primary, after it was rescheduled, and he was easily beat him out in the general thanks to his bump after 9/11.

He turned New York City into a business haven, implementing an 'Opportunity Zone' in Manhattan with massive incentives for local corporations, boosting growth, and began to attract technology to NYC, getting technology companies to locate their headquarters there. He also planted trees across the city and promoted urban gardening to promote a 'more green' landscape. This promoted growth, and especially promoted investment by businesses, growing the city even more and faster, though some believe that his policies may have led to an unstable growth in real estate, causing a bubble in real estate prices in the city.

He then retired out of office due to term limits, began to do philanthropy, visiting third world countries and helping promote public health efforts in those nations, along with work back home to reduce crime through offering alternate routes for kids in high-crime communities. He has also been known for donating very expensive fine art, which is definitely not a massive tax dodge. He puts himself in the media a lot, and has looked with interest at the growing technology sector. Now also gaining even more political influence; donated quite a lot to the RNC and to individual Republican candidates in 2006. He also founded a super PAC known as 'the Greater American Century PAC', and though he steps in to check the general direction once in a while he leaves the day-to-day running of it to his politically interested son.

Other Info: Worth $50 billion. New Imperial Capital holds about $1.5 trillion in AUM. (similar to top firms in 2007)

Pro tempore draft, had been 1/2 way through bio but decided to restart. Bit of a mix between Ted and John Kennedy. After I tie up Woolworth's lose ends, this will be my main character.

P.S. thanks to Madrinpoor for some advice on the application.

Independence Party of New York (as nominee, 1992-)
    Green Party (as nominee, 1998-)
Faceclaim: Ted Stevens
Main Strengths:
The One and Only: McKinney's sheer recognition allows him to maintain an iron grip over New York politics. Building his 60-year political brand across the state, his endorsement (or lack thereof) can make or break a primary or general election. If Senator McKinney doesn't like you, you're dead in the waters of the New York DNC. His longevity of service has also allowed him to make a name for himself nationally, being one of the most recognizable politicians, if not as recognizable as the President.
A Mentor's Mentor: McKinney's status as an ancient creature of the Senate, among the oldest and longest-serving in United States history, leaves him in a position of an elder statesman in Washington. Despite being a prim-and-proper, straight-laced man, McKinney has befriended and mentored a wide swath of colleagues over the years.
A Warrior's Reward: McKinney's background as a World War II veteran influences and strengthens his position amongst voters, and provides a strong background in strategic decision making and an ability to work under pressure. McKinney won a purple heart after being injured in the Battle of Saipan. A lingering struggle with the wartime injury has plagued the Senator for 63 years.
Friends with Benefits: Elected to the House of Representatives in 1946, McKinney served with political icons such as Sam Rayburn, John F. Kennedy, and Richard Nixon. Particularly striking up a friendship with fellow northeastern Irish catholic John Kennedy, they would remain friends throughout their lives, with McKinney being Kennedy's personal preference for a running mate in 1960, but was rejected by advisors. McKinney, counting Kennedy as one of his closest friends, was heartbroken after the events in Dallas. In addition, in the Senate, McKinney befriended the likes of Hubert Humphrey. These connections, as well as ties to national donors, ensure McKinney never runs out of stories to tell - or cash.
The Emperor: Serving New York for 6 decades, New York voters have continuously re-elected Joe McKinney by sizable margins every 6 years. With a strong record of delivering for the state and a time-tested sense of loyalty to him, any political threat to him has long since passed. His strong position in the state has earned him the nickname of "The Emperor" of the Empire State.

Matthias Dolan--revised

Having problems with the picture.....

Character Application and Information Sheet[/align]

NS Nation Name: Providence Rock
Character Name: Matthias Dolan
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 49
Character Height: 5'10"
Character Weight: 165 lbs
Character Position/Role/Job: Congressman (RI-02)
Character Country/State of Birth: Providence, Rhode Island
Character State of Residence: Warwick, Rhode Island
Character Party Affiliation: Democratic
Faceclaim: Todd Young
Main Strengths: Reputation as honest and principled, scandal-free almost squeaky clean, connects with people even if they disagree, "Christ-like" in his compassion, he can show empathy without compromising his ground, devout, has blue collar routes and connects to the "Dunkin Donuts Democrats" and "lunchpail liberals" (i.e. senior citizens, minorities, union members, working class people)
Main Weaknesses: a bit "too devout" for his liberal district, his stances are heavily guided by faith making him increasingly distrusted by Democrats, is rumored to have a gambling problem. He has been seen wagering large amounts of money at blackjack tables at the Connecticut casinos, especially for a teacher's pay.
Biography: (Minimum 2-3 paragraphs)
Matthias Dolan was born in Providence in 1958 and raised by devout, hard working, working-class people. His father was a dock worker in Providence and his mother was a waitress at a diner. He loved Sunday, because it was the only day his parents did not work and he was able to see them. He came to love going to church from a young age because of that. Matthias was a good student and was very outgoing, friendly, altruistic, and well-behaved. He earned a number of scholarships for academics and need and was able to afford to enroll in College at University of Rhode Island, transferring to Providence College after one year. He returned to University of Rhode Island, hoping to become a teacher. He taught at a Jesuit School in Warwick. While the Jesuit preachers taught religious education, Dolan taught social studies and mathematics. He married a co-worker, a Brazilian-American teacher who taught Spanish, Maria Velasquez, married in 1985. Dolan was a well-liked teacher he was charismatic and made lessons as engaging and interesting as possible. He began attending local town meetings in Rhode Island to advocate for the Catholic Schools and gradually became increasingly passionate. He joined the Democratic Party and was elected to the Board of Education in Warwick in 1991. He was later elected to city council in 1995, and when the Second District's seat became open in 1998, he ran for it and despite a challenging primary, he won, talking to blue collar and working class Democrats, speaking in poorer areas in Providence and Warwick, and ultimately defeated more established candidates. He continued campaigning hard in the general election, and easily defeated his Republican opponent.
Dolan was excited in 2007 when Democrats now hold the majority in the House for the first time since he's been elected and is hoping this will help him, however, more progressive activists do not like some of his social positions and have challenged him in 2006, only for him to win with 82% of the vote. However, progressives will likely try again.
Other Info:
Dolan describes himself as a "Catholic Democrat." He states that while he believes in a separation of Church and state he does not believe about a separation of "morality and state" and states that "if our money can say in God we trust, so can our leaders."
Dolan supports mostly center-left economic positions including raising the minimum wage, allowing unions, and providing quality social services. He supports single-payer universal healthcare and gun control. However, he also opposes abortion, except in cases of health, opposes same-sex marriage, and supports school choice, especially for lower-income students.
Dolan has five children Bernadette (b. 1987), Peter (b, 1989), Joseph (b. 1993), Angela (b. 1994), and Anna (b. 1998). Bernadette is enrolled in Providence College, Peter is hoping to attend Stonehill College in the fall. Joseph is enrolled in a Catholic high school for boys, Angela will be attending an all girl's school after she completes eight grade next year.
It's unclear if he's LOSING regularly, he does teach math and may be making a quick payday by counting cards.

I feel like McKInney and Eastmoreland-Northwoods might have a little feud with each other, especially since Mayors of NYC aren't known for having the best relations with statewide officials, and especially not when it's two people with such different political styles and opinions.

Character Name: Eleanor Brosnan
Character Gender: Female
Character Age: 52
Character Height: 5ft 4
Character Weight: 58kg
Character Position/Role/Job:
Chancellor at the University of Mississippi (2004-Present)
    Governor of Mississippi (2000-2004)
Associate Justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court (1995-1999)
Attorney for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (1989-1994)
    Independent Attorney (1980-1989)
Appearance: (Image)
Character State of Origin: Mississippi, Jackson
Character State of Residence: Mississippi, Laurel
Character Party Affiliation: Democrat
Main Strengths:
    - Southern Local: Born, raised and married in the Magnolia state. Brosnan is a true deep-south local through and through.
    - Devoted Evangelical: Espousing Evangelical views and attending Church regularly has earned her a reputation of being a hard-line Christian.
    - Lifelong Pro-Life & Childcare Advocate: Having spent much of her life campaigning for pro-life movements, being in close contact to childcare issues/groups and becoming a mother has added to this image.
    - Federal Government Experience: Her work within the F.B.I has given her some experience with internal federal affairs and procedures.
    - Education Reformer: Brosnan's governorship has championed education, being a core issue and legislative victory for her within the state.
Main Weaknesses:
    - Stern & Coldly Analytical: Warm comfort isn't associated with Eleanor, her lack of emotion and human touch tends to alienate voters.
    - DNC Disconnect: Her social stances and general moderate politics tends to not go down well with more liberal elements in the DNC, creating an oftentimes straining relationship with the party.
    - Prideful Narcissism: Having already been raised with a certain sense of pride, her unique position today has developed mere pride into unhealthy self-loving narcissism.
    - Lacking Public Relations: Personal connections to voters, other than the relatability of having a family, are few and far between.
    - Political Balancing: Being a Democrat in the South has continually put her political career under strain, maintaining her status requires delicate balancing and compromise.
    - Anti-LGBT Stances Alienate Liberals: During her tenure, Brosnan banned same-sex parents from adopting children which caused an upset with liberals.
    - Recently lost re-election: Her defeat has resulted in claims that her political career has been an accidental fluke.
Biography: Born on February 4th, 1955, Eleanor McQuarrie's early life was spent in suburban conditions within a sheltered small family, her father being a retired judge and mother a small business hairdresser. In school she displayed a preference for humanities related subjects rather than scientific ones, which only became solidified after her graduation. She successfully applied into the law course in the University of Mississippi Law Center, a decision mainly influenced by her adoration towards her father and his career path. From a lengthy period lasting 1988 till 2003 she studied to earn a PhD in her chosen field. During this time she met her future husband Edward Brosnan while also participating in a limited amount of volunteer work on the behalf of 'Temporary Assistance for Needy Families', her main political orientation started to form on the basis of protecting children & preserving family values. During the 1980s and 1990s Anti-Abortion protests occurred around Jackson's abortion clinics which Eleanor frequently attended.

In 1980 she earned her Law PhD from Mississippi's University, for work related reasons she settled in Laurel to become an Attorney for potential clients. She married and subsequently renamed to Brosnan in 1984. In that same year she was heavily involved in a publicised Court Case, defending a client who had been assaulted as a minor by one of their extended-family members. The case was covered by local news, Eleanor appearing in some newspaper quotations and clips covering the occurrence. She used this opportunity as a beginning to fostering an outward reputation of being morally upright. The case ended only as a slight victory for the attorney, as the defendant agreed to a lighter plea bargain. From 1984-1990 she involved herself with the Children's Advocacy Centres of Mississippi, using involvement with the organisation as a way of improving her credentials related to social issues in the State. Her time as an independent Attorney was overall average, many of her cases being minor disputes and grievances.

In 1989 there was an opening in the FBI Jackson branch for an Attorney, Eleanor applied and was accepted after a series of rigorous security related interviews amongst an extensive field of other applicants. She advised the FBI on legal & jurisdiction related matters, giving counsel on a large selection of issues in the litigation sphere. As a member of the organisation she witnessed some of the inner workings of the Government and how security was handled. This was also the place where she developed an interest in politics in terms of management and hierarchy. Due to the classified nature of her work there isn't a large amount of information related to her workings in this line of work.

In 1994 a decision was taken by her to leave the FBI position in pursuit of other lines of legal work, this was mainly due to her giving birth to a son in the previous year and subsequent arguments over care-taking. The dispute was settled by Eleanor through manipulating Edward into quitting his work to become a stay at home husband. Her resounding education and previous involvement with the Government lead to her nomination by Mississippi's Governor to the Mississippi Supreme Court, the appeal of her becoming a justice was the fact that Democrats would support her nomination as she is a member of their party. Her nomination passed on mostly bi-partisan lines, she filled the spot of a retiring senior Justice who had not served out his reaming term. After a year a Special Election was held for her position as stated by the law, she won by 50.6% of the vote despite her status as a 'temporary' justice. Her main focus was on menial family related cases although she showed some opposition to the death penalty when repeals were presented to the Court, so much so that she garnered some attention from publications for her disagreement with the practice. A portion of her monthly salary was given to a charity organisation named 'Mississippi Families For Kids' during her tenure as a Justice. Often times she used her position a platform for political convictions, such as supporting the creation of a 'Mississippi Freedom Trail' as to celebrate African-American rights.

In 1999 she resigned from the Supreme Court out of personal ambition, beginning to outline her political manifesto through mainstream media and various local appearances. She backs the expansion of Medicaid and it's financing, tuition-free community college, ceasing corporate tax cuts in the state, ending the closure of rural hospitals, supporting pro-life legislation and upholding light gun regulations. Her main viewpoints were tilted towards a family & childcare related focus. She launched an exploratory committee into the Mississippi gubernatorial election on March 2nd 1999, officially announcing a three weeks later in rented town hall. The overall tone of the campaign was focused on her self-perception as a more conservative/moderate Democrat, attempting to gain favour with rural & socially conservative voters. In the Democratic Primary she faced criticism and opposition from more liberal candidates, outlining her closer proximity with the main viewpoints of the RNC. In response Brosnan's campaign shifted focus on the need for a moderate to unify Mississippi's Democratic Chapter, stating that the Democrats winning the Governorship would be more beneficial than 'fantasising about impossible populist victories'. Her attempts at appealing to both moderates and liberals was somewhat successful, as she won the primary by 59% of the vote.

The 1999 Gubernatorial Election was the closest in Mississippi history. Out of almost three-quarters of a million votes cast, Brosnan had won 8,300 more votes than Parker in a four-way election, but fell 0.38 points short of receiving a majority (as required by the state's 1890 Constitution). Since neither candidate received a majority of the popular vote, and had split the electoral vote 61-61, the Mississippi House of Representatives was required to hold a contingent election select the winner. They narrowly chose Brosnan on the first ballot, and was the only time the election of a Mississippi governor was decided by the Mississippi House.

Brosnan subsequently served on various boards and associations (National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, Southern States Energy Board, Southern Regional Education Board). Brosnan presided over what is still considered the largest economic development project in Mississippi history. In August 2000, she launched the Advantage Mississippi Initiative (AMI) to create new jobs for the state, which brought in a new Nissan Motor Company production plant. The $1.4 billion Nissan Motor Company production plant created 5,300 direct jobs and over 25,000 indirect jobs. Nissan's arrival gave legitimacy to the notion that the Southeastern United States could become an automotive manufacturing leader. Brosnan's AMI economic development package also helped set in motion the mechanics needed to recruit Toyota to Blue Springs. Governor Brosnan also recognized the importance of building economic capacity through an educated workforce. Always a strong supporter of public education, Brosnan focused her attention while in office on building a foundation for economic growth through the state's public schools. During her tenure, she raised teacher salaries to the Southeastern average. Through her focus on education - In 2002, Mississippi was the first state in the nation to have a computer with internet access in every classroom. She also banned the usage of public funds for abortions and banned same-sex couples from adopting children - in line with her more conservative evangelical stances.

In 2003 she lost her re-election bid, owing to overwhelming Republican financing and support against her. Her opponent won with 52.59% of the vote. Straight after her defeat, owing to her educated background and historic status as being the first women elected as Governor in Mississippi history, she was invited to become Chancellor of the University of Mississippi - primarily a ceremonial position.

Character Country/State of Birth: Pennsylvania
Character State of Residence: Illinois
Character Party Affiliation: Republican
Faceclaim: Ronald Lauder
Main Strengths: Popular among working class conservatives, Friend of President Cush
Main Weaknesses: bombastic, war hawk, Quixotic beliefs, Doesn’t think before he speaks

Biography: Meredith Otis Stewart Markoe has an overabundance of names, none of which are anywhere close to Bobby. But somehow, it became his nickname while growing up in an Old Money Pennsylvania family in the 1940s and 50s. It was the dawn of the Atomic Age—a time of unbridled optimism if one was a young, well-off white American. This instilled within him an excitement for the sciences, and given that he was a third son with few other uses, his parents encouraged this passion. Markoe studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, then did postgraduate work at the University of Illinois, earning a Master's in Nuclear Engineering and a Ph.D. in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. A good number of renown scientists, only some of whom were former members of the National Socialist German Workers Party, served as his mentors, and Markoe even got a gig as research assistant for a couple of projects under the Apollo program—though, truth be told, he was probably one of the least important of the 400,000 employees who helped put man on the Moon.

Following this, Markoe spent an impressive two decades as a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, where his research touched on various fields of engineering and physics. And it was also around this point that he got involved in politics. His family were hardened conservatives who cheered on Taft, MacArthur, and McCarthy, and Markoe carried these biases against the burgeoning New Left. He took particular umbrage against environmentalists who launched hysterical campaigns against seemingly every innovation since the Middle Ages; Markoe defended Project Plowshare until the day it was terminated in 1977. That year also hardened his social conservative attitudes when an extramarital affair and messy divorce forced him to reconsider his life choices and become a born-again Christian. He still considers himself nondenominational, though he has described his beliefs as Calvinist.

It was Star Wars that finally turned him into a public figure. Markoe had been involved in the Fusion Energy Foundation—a think tank that promoted nuclear power, fusion energy, particle-beam weapons, and space colonization—since the late 1970s. He distanced himself from it in 1984, when the full extent of its ties to Lyndon LaRouche's US Labor Party became public, but by then one of FEF's main causes was already a matter of federal policy. President Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative was a controversial missile defense program with the aim of making nuclear weapons obsolete. Many experts said it was impossible, but Markoe was determined otherwise. As a confident, well-spoken, rocket scientist, he became one of the most effective public advocates for the program in popular media, earning himself a place at the George C. Marshall Institute designed to support STI. Though it ultimately failed, Markoe maintains to this day that it directly caused the fall of the Soviet Union by forcing the Russians to overspend on their military in response, and that innumerous useful technological innovations came from the program.

By the time of the 1988 election, the George C. Marshall Institute started moving its focus to denial of global warming, and Markoe followed along with this. Indeed, the STI drama instilled into him a thirst for the limelight, and he spent much of the late 1980s as a paid consultant and spokesman skeptical of the alarmism surrounding things like asbestos, DDT, second-hand smoke, and mad cow disease. Even if it is outside his realm of expertise, Markoe thinks that he—as a literal rocket scientist—has the authority to dig around the data and give a definitive answer. His philosophy centers on opposition to the "regulatory-industrial complex" sustained by ideological activists, opportunistic personal injury lawyers, hysterical media outlets, demagogic politicians, and careerist bureaucrats who have a common interest in inventing new health and safety threats for the public to obsess about.

This has all made him rather popular among Republican activists, and especially Republican donors. Markoe had been hobnobbing around political circles since the early 1970s, and even ran unsuccessfully for a couple of local and statewide positions. Like most wealthy white men, Markoe thinks that the government is currently run by idiots, and he could do much better if given the opportunity. In 1990, he saw it has his chance to go big, filing paperwork to run for (not-Paul Simon's) senate seat. It was a miserable failure. Markoe lost overwhelmingly in the Republican primary to (not-Lynn Morley Martin) who in turn lost overwhelmingly in the general election to Simon. But then there was a miracle: (not-Edward Rell Madigan), the representative from Champaign's district, was nominated as President Cush's Secretary of Agriculture in 1991. Markoe narrowly won the primarily to replace him, then cruised to victory in the safe Republican seat.

Harkening back to his defense of STI, Markoe has perhaps best made a reputation in Congress as a hawk. Throughout the 1980s, he warned that the Soviet Union was on the verge of overtaking the United States in military might. By the time he entered Congress, that prediction had proved comically wrong. So, he shifted his focus to the need for American leadership in a changing world. This became especially salient after 9/11. Markoe is a fervent backer of the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. He compares it to World War II—an existential struggle between democracy and tyranny. Anyone who opposes military action is either a supporter of Al-Qaeda/Saddam/Iran, or else a useful idiot. His long hawkish history briefly earned him the top spot on the House Homeland Security Committee, until the Democrats retook the chamber.

Also unsurprising given his background, Markoe is extremely skeptical of regulation. Sometimes, this in itself has generated controversy. In the aftermath of 9/11, he blamed the tragedy on asbestos regulations: the Twin Towers were originally planned to be built with fire-resistant lagging that would have allowed more time for people to evacuate before the towers fell. On another occasion, he asserted that (not-Rachel Carson) "killed more people than Hitler" due to a controversial analysis that restrictions on DDT have caused 20 million children to die of malaria. But above all, he opposes the "cult of global warming," which he regards as a fundamentally anti-humanist ideology that will only further entrench poverty and inequality. He is adamant that the Earth is not warming, and even if it is, then humans aren't causing it, and even if they are, then it's actually a good thing because increased CO2 helps the trees grow. Besides this, Markoe has been involved in a series of more quixotic efforts, like the Save the Greenback campaign organized by paper and ink interests to stop the paper dollar from being phased out.

Finally, like any conservative Republican, Markoe is a firm believer in family values. This means an opposition to abortion and homosexuality, of course. He has also proclaimed that evolution is "not a settled question" and schools ought to "teach the controversy." And his close ties with Christian Zionists who support the Jewish state as a tool for achieving the apocalypse has raised some eyebrows. But he stands out for having built a persona as a squeaky-clean Christian uncomfortable with sex, violence, and foul language in the media. Following the Columbine High School massacre, he was very quick to lay responsibility on the video game Doom. Though, his enthusiasm for the (not-Clinton) impeachment proceedings became awkward when media pointed out his own extramarital affairs that led his first wife to divorce him in 1977. To this, he could only offer a bumbling response about how he truly repented his actions, while (not-Clinton) is an opportunist who is only pretending to, and besides, they're not impeaching him for the affair itself, but for lying about it in front of the American people.

A journalist once described Markoe as a penultimate man of the 1950s, defined by a belief in American military might, traditional family values, and unbridled techno-optimism. He had his hayday in the early days of the Cush era, but he is now finding himself out of the cultural zeitgeist. However, far from discouraging him, this has strengthened his resolve to fight.

-Professor, University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (1969-1991)

Main Weaknesses: can be very stubborn and make judgements easily, had a temper, rumors of an affair are whispered (unclear what happened)

Tomas Sancha Zaragoza was born in the United States only several days after his parents had illegally immigrated into the United States from Cuba. His parents wanted him to be born an American. His family moved into a poor immigrant community in Miami’s inner cities. Tomas’ father, Ricardo, and his mother Maria took whatever jobs they could. His mother worked as a maid at a hotel and his father did construction work when he could and otherwise performed odd jobs. Tomas was often left in the care of neighbors and the few relatives who also immigrated. When he was four, his father was able to find more reliable work as a mechanic’s assistant and trained as an mechanic, his mother ultimately made more money and worked at more upscale hotels. A year later his sister, Isabella, was born and later his brother Matteo and his sister, Antonia. When Tomas was nine he began working at a local Bodega to earn some of his own money. It was revealed he had been working as a drug mule, fist unknowingly, but later blackmailed by the owner when he was 13. He was arrested for drug possession and attended a reformatory. After getting out he distanced himself from crime and attended school diligently and went to church regularly, finding worship tranquil. Tomas took what jobs he could, but ensuring they were legitimate and achieved good grades in school. He graduated and enlisted in the US Army Reserve to pay for his college education. That’s when the Gulf War occurred. Tomas was sent to Iraq along with his unit. However, he distinguished himself in Iraq and won a bronze star for his actions. He left the US army after his tour was over as a corporal and enrolled in the University of Miami, after graduating he decided to attend law school at the same University, becoming an attorney and a prosecutor. During that time he initially worked in Miami, but he married a former college classmate, Emilia, who was a businesswoman and he moved with her to Jacksonville for her career. In Jacksonville, however, Tomas continued to work as a prosecutor, and believed he was helping his community. His parents later moved to live closer to him and are extremely proud of their “American” son. In early 2001 his first child was born, a son named Francisco. Tomas wanted to re-enlist in the army after 9-11, but Emilia forbade it for his son. Tomas was approached by a judge after a trial and attended his first meeting of the local Republican Town Committee. Tomas became increasingly political and read works like Conscience of a Conservative, the Road to Serfdom, Atlas Shrugged, Capitalism and Freedom, Edmund Burke, and Russel Kirk, all in rapid succession. He ran for the United States House of Representatives in 2004. Despite being in a red district he knocked on every door. His military and legal background, and reputation as a constant underdog presented wide appeal.

Character Weight: 215 lbs
Character Position/Role/Job:
House Minority Whip (2007-Present)
Chair of House Armed Services (2005-2007)
Member of the House Armed Services Committee (2001-2005)
Member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce (1997-2001)
Member of the House Energy Subcommittee on Environment and Climate Change
Member of the Republican Study Committee (1997-Present)
Representative for Montana's At-Large Congressional District (1997-Present)
CEO Tenson Oil (1993-1997)
Officer USMC (1978-1993)
Bachelor's Student in Business-University of Montana (1974-1978)

Character Country/State of Birth: Montana
Character State of Residence: Washington D.C.
Character Party Affiliation: GOP (1995-Present)
Independent (1976-1993)
Main Strengths:
-Experienced Lawmaker: Earl has learned the ways of Washington quite well by now, working his way up the ladder of the House Republican Conference

-Foreign policy expertise: Through both his time in the Marine Corps and in Washington Earl has extensively studied how to deal with America's enemies, especially from nations such as Iran and North Korea. Few are as well equipped in the GOP Conference to talk foreign issues as Earl.

-Charismatic: In part thanks to his days as an officer in the Marines, Earl has quite a nack for public speaking. He can easily deliver off the cuff speeches and has no issues debating his opponents when needed.

-Conservative celebrity: Earl is quite popular amongst rank and file Republicans due to his documented Conservative past as well as his loyalty to President Cush the past eight years.

Main Weaknesses:
-Silver Spoon Background: There is no denying Earl was raised with a silver spoon in his mouth. Born into Tenson Oil, at no point was Earl ever at risk of not being able to afford a home payment or be on the streets. As well, being born into an oil company specifically comes at the cost of making him an easy target for environmental activists.

-Brashness-Earl has a bit of a history of saying things that get himself in trouble. He also tends to have quite a potty mouth in private and will not hesitate to cuss out any Republicans he is becoming frustrated with in private.

Overweight-Unfortunately, Earl has not kept up with his fitness following his exit from the military, needless to say, this has made him a bit chunky.

-Iraq Junky: Earl has been an ardent supporter of the Iraq War since it started and supports a troop surge to deal with the Al-Qaeda insurgency, needless to say this is an unpopular position amongst the American public.

Biography: Earl Tenson was born just outside Baker Montana in 1956. His father, Joshua Tenson, was the CEO of Tenson Oil and his mother a stay-at-home parent. As his parent's only child, it was expected from early on that Earl would take over his father's business one day. He scored decent marks in school but found himself disinterested in the idea of serving his father's business. Earl attended the University of Montana at Missoula where he received a Bachelor's in Business. He made an agreement with his father that he would take over the business after serving in the military, attending Marine Corps Officer Candidates School in Quantico, Virginia in 1978 and commissioning as a Second Lieutenant (O-1) and an infantry platoon leader in the 2nd Marine Division. It was around this time he met his future wife Clara, who he would marry in 1983 and give birth to his son Earl Jr. in 1985.

In 1983 then First Lieutenant Tenson found himself going to war during Operation Urgent Fury. He led a platoon of Marines in helicopter landings on August 25th at Pearls Airport, but the Marines faced minimal resistance other than a few mounted machine gun emplacements. The island capitulated in three days and the war was over. Earl returned home to marry his wife in the fall of that year.

Earl also participated in the 1989 invasion of Panama. Now Captain Tenson lead Marines during the battle of Panama City and saw heavy fighting against the forces of Manuel Noriega. He commanded an entire Company of Marines through the battle and was awarded a Silver Star for his leadership.

He was promoted to a Major and was deputy commander to a battalion during Desert Storm in 1991. However, at this point he was out of the fighting and spent most of his day looking at maps and on phone calls with Company and Platoon leaders to keep the Lieutenant Colonel updated. Earl was not fond of this life pushing pencils behind a desk and decided to leave the military and finally fulfill his promise to his father, who passed away in October of 1992. He served as CEO of Tenson Oil for three years until he decided to run for office. He saw President not-Clinton as a "left liberal" who posed a threat to America's standing worldwide as well as his family oil business. He ran for Congress in 1996 and successfully unseated the incumbent Democrat to become Representative for Montana's At-Large Congressional District.

Representative Tenson was a standard Conservative in office, generally supporting Speaker (Not-Grinich) and opposing any liberal policies of not-Clinton. In 2000 he ardently supported and stumped for then-Governor Cush nationwide as he saw (Not-Gore) as a disaster waiting to happen for America's energy and his business. He was grateful when Cush came out on top during the Florida recount. After the 2000 elections Earl was placed onto the Armed Services committee which he later became chair of.

Earl was one of President Cush's closest allies during the war on terror, fully supporting the AUMF for both Afghanistan and Iraq. He applauded President Cush's "Axis of Evil" speech, with Earl secretly being in support of military operations against Iran.

In 2004 he considered a run for Governor but decided against it as he wanted to be able to assist the President further in fighting terrorism overseas. He was later vindicated in his decision as (Not-Schweitzer) was elected easily.

Earl was greatly disappointed in the results of the 2006 midterms, however the chaos that engulfed congressional Republicans afterwards allowed him to find himself promoted to Whip. Tenson leans towards Governor Calalo for President.

Character Application and Information Sheet

NS Nation Name: Karg
Character Name: Earl "Big Ears" Joshua Tenson
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 54
Character Height: 5' 10"

1.I'll change him to FL-18.
2. I do not see how a child in the ghetto being tricked into being a drug mule is unrealistic. It is quite often in poorer communities for youths to be exploiting in trafficking unknowingly. Mule can refer to international travel, he was simply delivering packages of unknown contents about the genera area.

3-5 I have no objections to and will improve upon.

It was withdrawn, but on reconsideration we really do need a HML and could do with some more House Dems in general, so with the proviso that I will make up some IC reason why he's not going to run for Speaker, I would like to resubmit this. Please let me know if I need to expand on the points you raised earlier.
