Biography:

Upton Robert Fleming was born to Judith Fleming (nee Moore) and Harold Fleming In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His mother was among a select few women who worked at NASA on the Apollo program, the year before moving to Philadelphia with her husband as newly weds as both of them received offers to work in Pennsylvania in higher education, Judith in teaching mathematics and Harold is developmental economics. In addition to career advancement, their new better paying jobs would also allow them to live in a minority-majority suburban neighborhood in late 1969. Having educated parents, a bright mind and living in an affluent community, it was none too difficult for him to not only do well in school, but vigorously pursue extracurricular activities, sports and volunteering included, primarily through catholic organizations due to his religious upbringing. His political awakening truly began when he attended a Jesse Jackson campaign speech in a Philadelphia church in 1984, which spoke of the need to unite and mobilize young people and minorities.

He would graduate as a valedictorian in high school, graduating at 16 before earning a scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania, but intending to go down the path of a military career, he decided to enroll in the NAVY ROTC program. From the first year he began flight training with the goal of becoming a fighter pilot. Meanwhile, he pursued a political science degree with a minor in engineering, followed by a law degree he'd work on through his service.

He’d end up serving on the USS Theodore Roosevelt where he would end up meeting Talise Mabus, one of the first female fighter pilots in US history, and ending up in a relationship with which meant leaving a relationship with an African-American woman he had been dating from high school to college. He'd marry Talise in 1994, a marriage established in mutual political advancement almost as much as personal love. While married he'd serve around three more years in active duty, most notably during the intervention against the Bosnian Serbs. In response o Bosnian serb separatist force bombarding an open air market. The USS Theodore Roosevelt, along the USS America and two french carriers were deployed to the Adriatic to in which the airwing he was a part of flew hundreds of sorties, hitting hundreds of Bosnian serb separatist targets, helping force them into negotiations.

After transferring to the naval reserve in 1997, Upton would run for Philadelphia District Attorney, promising to bring military discipline to the fight against crime. Over the next four years, he’d aggressively promote his actions as contributing to a decreasing crime rate, raising his profile as the homicide rate continued to descend. His mode of operation included aggressively pursuing the harshest possible prison sentences against hard drug manufacturing and dealers. He’d win re-election to district attorney easily and rumors began to swirl about his being a potential candidate for the 2002 Pennsylvania gubernatorial election to replace the term limited Republican Governor. He announced his run early in 2002, running a campaign emphasizing both his tough on crime record and, to many observers, surprisingly liberal orientation on economics, even as he supported bi-partisan proposals like simplifying public programs, promoting movement towards land value taxes and backing employee stock ownership plans. He also cautiously tapped into an abortion skeptical vein among older African American voters and a critical number of white Catholics, while seeking a big donor constituency of Real estate developers and the construction industry. He’d manage to win the Democratic race in a field split by three notable candidates, securing 39% the primary vote with a strong showing in Philadelphia and its surrounding suburbs, but a noticeable weakness in rural Pennsylvania.

In addition to emphasizing his record on crime in Philadelphia, he would spend his campaign promising to lower sales taxes, introduce progressivity to state income taxes and support a process to replace property taxes in the state with land value taxes to promote land development and punish vacant land ownership. He'd go on to win the general election by 5 points, primarily hampered by poor performance in rural counties, but aided by very strong urban support and solid suburban backing.

In office, his first legislative production was the Pennsylvania of Tomorrow program, which was meant to significantly lower sales taxes and increase education funding by shifting over to a more progressive state income tax, along with a variety of 'sin' taxes on beer, cigarettes and gambling. Looking to find a way to secure revenue through utilities taxes, the plan also called for a small tax on electricity generation that was weighted by carbon emissions, partially in an attempt to promote nuclear energy. The program also called for the phase out and replacement of both state and local property taxes in Pennsylvania with land value taxes, starting with a complete moratorium on new property taxes within municipalities. Lastly the bill included putting the Pennsylvania state Treasurer, an office held by a Republican in charge of an project called 'Pennsylvania Solidarity', which would exist to provide advice and aid to businesses in Pennsylvania to implement ESOP plans for their employees, support agricultural cooperatives and promote credit union membership as local alternatives to national conglomerates.

After negotiations with the republican controlled legislature, Upton was able to secure smaller versions of all of his priorities, with the exception of the property tax/land value tax transition, which went through without modifications. Upton would go on to reform government procurement in Pennsylvania through the creation of the Office of Administration and Efficiency, which would seek to factor in recirculated tax revenue in its’ procurement decisions, leading to an increase in business for Pennsylvania from the state government and net improvements to the Pennsylvania budget of around a billion dollars by the end of his first term. As part of his tough on crime approach, he also support laws intended to move towards a requirement for all prisoner's to either work or train for work during their prison term, even at the expense of bending to a republican legislature that wished aimed to increase prison privatization.

In 2004, due to an effective campaign in a low profile race during a presidential election year, his wife Talise was able to secure a landslide victory for the state treasury, even getting inroads into rural Pennsylvania. She went quickly to work using the full breadth of powers provided through the Pennsylvania Solidarity project, leading to significant expansion of ESOPs, coops and credit unions in the state.

In 2005, when the discussion of social security reform in Washington D.C. went into full swing, Upton weighed in by suggesting that he’d be supportive of having the social security trust fund transition its assets into index funds and away from non-marketable securities, alongside lifting the cap on FICA and SECA contributions. The former parts of these comments would be interpreted by some as endorsement of a partial privatization of social security, which caused some dissension in the ranks among progressives in the state democratic party. This triggered the creation of a tongue in cheek campaign by the activist left to draft his wife, Talise, perceived as more left wing, to run for governor in 2006. Talise would end up converting this energy into an announcement of her intention to run for the United States Senate in 2006.

The humorous campaign would, instead, morph into a very serious campaign to draft the 2002 Green Party candidate to run against Upton in the upcoming primaries, who was originally reluctant to do so due to feeling that there was a lack of infrastructure to support a campaign. He quickly gained support from some factions of the Pennsylvania democratic party that opposed Upton, primarily those on the right and localist leaning parts of the party, feeling that while he was in theory closer to their views, the challenger, or the Republican nominee, would be easier to pull in their direction once in office than Upton.

Despite an impressive campaign for someone who was a third party candidate in the election cycle before, Upton won a decisive victory in the primaries, though it was notably much smaller than his own wife’s senate primary victory. Both, however, would go on to win their general election victory in November with around ~60% of the popular vote, as more center and left leaning voters were drawn to vote for Talise and Upton by the other respectively, in addition to riding the 2006 blue wave. The election victory would do much to undermine organized opposition to Upton in the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, particularly when his election victory saw the end of his team's attempts to squash speculation that he was planning to run for President for 2008. State Democrats coveted the chance to have the first black president come from the state whose only other native born president was the man who let America fall into civil war, James Buchanan.

Come new years, 2007, news of an exploratory committee to run for a Upton Fleming run would come out, allowing him to draw some national media to his inauguration speech on January 21st, where he lay out all that he had accomplished in his previous term as Governor of Pennsylvania, before laying out his agenda for the future in terms that were very much nationally applicable, with the promise that specifics would be saved for his February budget address to the state General Assembly.

On March 1st, 2007 he’d officially launch his presidential campaign.

Other Info:

The election victories here are significantly toned down to be at around the average national democrat numbers of the given year to account for the fair possibility that Upton would do worse than Ed Rendell. Given that the RL 2006 republican nominee was a black football player, and given that he performed only ~5 points worse than the 2002 candidate, in a year that republicans did ~13 points worse nationally, I think a black veteran with a tough on crime record could perform at least this well. The inspirations here are Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, except a veteran and committed to building a political force inside of Democratic party to the left of the New Democrats/Democratic Leadership Council types, but just as professionalized.

His father was an Arab physician with a small clinic in Beirut, and his mother was an Assyrian full-time mother raising him and his siblings in addition to being a prominent local women’s rights activist. They were both Sunni Muslims and prominent local supporters of the National Liberal Party.

He would begin to assist his father in the clinic at the age of 11 as the Lebanese Civil War ensured there was plenty of people in need. His father would help people even if they were incapable of paying, and this would continue till his father and mother were both killed in a bombing in 1984. Young Zahir would go on to volunteer and work with the Lebanese Red Cross until he would immigrate to the United States and join the U.S. military in 1988.

Zahir would serve in the U.S. military as an Army Interpreter/Translator (09L) throughout his military career until he left the service in 2005. He participated in six deployments throughout his military career including the Gulf War, First Intervention in the Somali Civil War, War in Afghanistan, War in Iraq, and Operation Enduring Freedom – Horn of Africa. Zahir was always interested in conflict and politics growing up during the Lebanese Civil War, and he would become a conflict zone journalist reporting in conflict zones to show the world what so many civilians across the globe are experiencing every day. He would also begin a podcast and website covering global news and providing forums for communication directed mainly towards political dissidents and people who live under regimes that are restrictive of media. His media platform has been likened to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

Zahir and his family decided to move to Pennsylvania in 2005 after he had left the Army to be closer to family as well as to expand his podcast to radio stations in the northeast.

Zahir is an advocate for constitutional amendments to the U.S. Constitution to further limit the powers of government, including term limits, limits on congressional pay, limits on special interests funding campaigns, mandatory sunset clauses for all legislation, and a lifetime ban on lobbying for former members of Congress. He supports reforming the criminal justice system, reforming the education system, and reforming healthcare. He is a major supporter of improving infrastructure and lowering taxes which were winning issues during the campaign. Despite his strong support for abolishing or lowering most taxes, he supports increasing ‘sin taxes.’ He has advocated for national paid parental leave and gun rights. He is an ardent opponent of abortion and supports stronger restrictions on it. He is an advocate of refugees and supports increasing the refugee cap to 50,000. He is also known for supporting the Afghanistan Conflict, Iraq War, and the War on Terror, although he rarely emphasized such when campaigning. Although Zahir is a self-described ‘independent’, he registered Republican and ran on the Republican ticket for Senate in the 2006 Pennsylvania elections winning his seat by a thin margin.

I mean I wanted him to be more so an independent candidate, and I made sure he was in a more moderate state across the board. He is more so running under the republican label and ticket without necessarily being republican per say. I don't know if he would pass for a Conservative dem either though, due to his reformer persona, but if you really want me to and aren't giving me much choice, I guess I could make him run under the democratic ticket instead. He could also change parties down the road or go independent if he is popular enough and then caucus either way on different issues.

Also, conservative Muslims and muslim organizations that associate with the Republican party do exist, I have fellow brothers who happen to be part of such organizations even if it is not as common, and plenty of them have been around since Bush Sr.

I understand his views, but the problem is this:

He is more so running under the republican label and ticket

Because the Republican ticket wouldn't welcome him. I know there are conservative Muslims (of course, there are conservative everythings) and I know some of them support the GOP, but they aren't necessarily running under the GOP ticket. Especially not during the War on Terror.

Independent is a fine road to go down, I'd just like a little more information on his politics (campaigns, views, how he toes that line). Up to you.

Sorry if it seems like I'm trying to railroad you (I promise I'm really not) I'm just looking at the political landscape in 2007.

Character Party Affiliation: Democrat
Main Strengths: Inspiring background, good record, quite charismatic, favourable personal ratings, strong support among minorities, able to appeal to traditional rural voters, supported by the activist left, and can attract small dollar donations.
Main Weaknesses: Politically inexperienced, few connections, very much to the left of the current political consensus, has never fought an election in a swing state, race and gender might prove barriers to higher office, very little support from the establishment or large corporations, very unorthodox in terms of background and style
Biography: The story of Pauline Bennett begins with that of her father. Her father, Bernard Botin, who was a farm worker and committed member of the Guatemalan opposition under the dictatorship, and fought during the early days of its civil war. Bastien was a tough man, who attended a great deal of protests and rallies, though mostly in his youth and prior to the birth of his daughter. He cheered when there was an attempted coup by the military officers, and joined them in their fight against the dictatorship, however after being shot in the right eye - and losing his sight in it - he decided to flee to America.

Botin moved to New Mexico, and became a farmer in a quiet New Mexico town, giving up the struggle for a bit, however, within about 5 years, he joined the United Farm Workers and got back to organising. He did some work in and around the area, however, after some time, he and his wife decided to have a child, and this is where the story of Pauline Bennett begins.

Bennett was born as a fraternal twin. Both of her parents worked in farming, and her father often gave her and her brother what he called 'lessons about the world', talking to them about his leftist ideals, with her father being a self-described socialist who often criticised the US government for not providing for its people. While she attended school and did well there, her main education, according to her, came from her father. Her father saw that she began to form into the mould of a politician, and so helped her to realise her potential, giving her books on political topics and passing down the political knowledge he had from self-study.

Thanks to both her efforts and that of her father, she was the first - along with her brother - to receive any form of formal education, with her father having spent the first twenty years of his life illiterate and only able to read thanks to education he received from leftist political organisations back in Haiti. However, due to not being able to afford it, she was unable to attend university, and instead joined the Peace Corps after finishing high school, after doing a few years of volunteering experience while working on the farm.

Both due to her ability to speak French and her farming experience, she was posted off to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where she helped local people with farming techniques and agricultural management, both teaching and getting into more practical work. After the end of her two-year term and a short extension, she returned to the United States.

As soon as she returned, both thanks to her father's status in the town and her personal inspiration, she slowly began to get into politics, first being a member of being the local Democratic Party, organising to increase turnout and get people involved in politics around rural New Mexico. She was decent at her job, and so ran for Deming Council in 1993, winning narrowly thanks to the reputation she built in the town.

In the city council, she primarily focused on local concerns, pushing for increased funding for libraries, personally overseeing the "Read for Deming" initiative, where local schools were provided with books - both fictional and non-fictional - through working with NGOs, parents and some money from the budget along with afterschool clubs to encourage students to educate themselves more about the world and things they were interested in. She also worked on getting a volunteer effort up to help beautify the parks and local environment, helping get rid of litter and so on. She was reelected with a wide margin, typical of the safe Democratic politics of the town.

After two terms in the city council, she ran for Mayor, as the incumbent retired. She was endorsed by the former Mayor, and so won in a solid victory, once again, typical of the town's politics. She continued her work there, amassing what she termed the Deming Volunteers, opening door-to-door outreach efforts to help mobilise people into taking volunteer action, then pushing ahead to improve transport in the town and creating a bill to offer grants and support to local cooperatives and expand adult education. She did this through implementing a small income tax on the more well-off in the town (in relative terms - the town had the highest poverty rate in New Mexico and one of the lowest average incomes when she came into office), though some of that money was wasted in spending on a failed solar power initiative, which led to a relatively decent deficit for quite a bit during her term, however she was able to fully scuttle the programme by the end of her term.

Her ethos of small-town solidarity struck a chord with voters from her town, and her policies were quite effective, slashing the poverty rate by quite a large amount, along with reducing unemployment and driving growth to the town. She also helped cut the crime rate through rehabilitation policies, giving prisoners education and reintegrating them into the community, along with her economic policies offering opportunity to people and tackling the causes of crime as well. Her rhetoric largely consisted of three things: hope, solidarity and inclusive populism, according to one local journalist.

She also made a brief, failed run for Congress in 2002, running on a stridenly and openly progressive platform, as opposed to her more mainline run in 2006. This run failed, as she narrowly lost in the Democratic primary, 52-48. She was disheartened by the loss, but nevertheless moved on, adapting her rhetoric and strategy to be a bit more mainline in the future. This defeat likely contributed to her victory in both the Democratic primary and in the general as Governor.

She briefly saw a moment of national recognition, after appearing on CNN to openly oppose the Iraq War, saying that it would be a great mistake and urging caution, and talked about how a pointless war like it - since the UN hadn't been able to find evidence of WMDs yet and there was no resolution in favour, making the war illegal - would take away money from the bottom of American society, and that instead of spending money on bombs they ought to spend it on food. Her spirited opposition to the war gave her a moment in the activist left circles, but ultimately it was just a mere moment.

Aside from that, her term went quietly well, as local and state newspapers covered the "Deming Miracle", and so, in 2006, with the retirement of the incumbent for personal reasons, she took the chance, declaring early, once again running on her rhetoric of solidarity, along with implementing a "Prosperity for All Plan" for New Mexico, campaigning on support of policies such as expanded access to healthcare, universal employment, police reform and increased funding to education. She narrowly won the primary, using her usual style to win voters over.

But then came the general. The general was a spirited fight, as her opponent knew that her gender and race would pose a high barrier to victory, and in spite of the national environment being against him, he had a chance. She knew that too, so she campaigned hard, despite a few missteps as a result of her lack of statewide experience, with her opponent having held statewide office. But regardless of that, she pressed on, and while some felt that the newcomer progressive's campaign was going to end up like [not-Dukakis] in 1988, she inspired a great deal of enthusiasm among the Democratic base, and brought in quite a bit of attention from outside of the state, and despite an initial slide in the polls, she was able to hold her own, winning 58-39. [Note: this margin is 19 points lower than the IRL result]

Now that she takes office, what will she do? It's time to look ahead, and see what the future brings.

Because the Republican ticket wouldn't welcome him. I know there are conservative Muslims (of course, there are conservative everythings) and I know some of them support the GOP, but they aren't necessarily running under the GOP ticket. Especially not during the War on Terror.

I wouldn't trust the map, it's not finalized yet.

Currently we have a GOP-cacausing independent from Arizona, and I think it'd be fine to have another Independent (maybe in Michigan or someplace with a higher Muslim population? Up to you) as long as it's confirmed with another admin.

Thanks for being so understanding! :) Sorry about all this, really. If this was in 2020, then it'd be fine to have Zahir be in the GOP, but this is still-quite-conservative 2007.

An active Cabinet Secretary? Yes, that’s much harder to pull off - they have to campaign, while being answerable to the president 24/7 (especially SecDef), there are a lot of ethics rules they have to abide by, and making a mistake could mean tanking their campaign. A former Cabinet Secretary? That’s more likely.

If they're a current Secretary, they would have to resign from the post otherwise it'd be a violation of a few rules.

Biography: (Minimum 2-3 paragraphs)
Zahir Muhammad Huriya was born in 1969 in Beirut, Lebanon, as the oldest of three children. He has a younger brother and sister.

He participated in five deployments throughout his military career including the Gulf War, First Intervention in the Somali Civil War, War in Afghanistan, War in Iraq, and Operation Enduring Freedom – Horn of Africa. While still serving in the Army Reserves, he became a foreign language teacher of Arabic and French.

Zahir was always interested in conflict and politics growing up during the Lebanese Civil War, and he would become a conflict zone journalist reporting in conflict zones to show the world what so many civilians across the globe are experiencing every day. He traveled to many countries that he had previously been deployed to as well as many others with the help of local and military friends. Quickly many of his articles, photos and videos would begin appearing in major newspapers across the globe.

Although Zahir is a self-described ‘independent’, he registered Democrat and ran on the Democratic ticket for Senate in the 2006 Pennsylvania elections winning his seat by a thin margin.

Character Application and Information Sheet

NS Nation Name: New Provenance
Character Name: Francis "Frank" Taylor
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 57 years
Character Height: 5"9
Character Weight: 189.7 lbs
Character Position/Role/Job: , Deputy Campaign Manager for not-Cal Dooley (1990-1990), Campaign Manager for not-Leon Panetta (1992-1993), Professor on Political Science at Santa Clara University (1993-1996), Representative for California's 17th Congressional District (1996-)
Character Country/State of Birth: Santa Clara, California, United States of America
Character State of Residence: California
Character Party Affiliation: Democratic Party
Faceclaim: Ralph Northam

Main Strengths:

Voice of Persuasion - Taylor was a natural-born speaker, as his mother described him. He speaks with persuasiveness and natural charisma and talent, harnessed during his years in high school as a successful class president. He carried this talent into his tenure on the campaigns of not-Dooley and not-Panetta in the early 1990s, and later to his job as a California congressman.
The Taylor Name - His grandfather, Peter Taylor, previously served as a junior senator for California, and his great-grandfather on his mother's side served as a Republican representative for California's 16th Congressional District, giving his name recognition of some form on the political scene.
A Deep Well of Green - Thanks to a sizable inheritance from the death of his businessman father coupled with the general wealth of the Taylor family, Taylor is able to run campaigns with more frequency and strength thanks to his larger-than-usual pool of funding, at times helping him push forward in Washington.
Main Weaknesses:
Member of the Elite - Frank is usually regarded as a high-class wealthy Californian and is at times accused by opponents of being too out-of-touch of the common American, damaging his public reputation and image.
For Progress or for Socialism? - Taylor's unusually socially and fiscally progressive stances on various policy issues has led to some calling him a fighter for socialism rather than a fighter for progress, especially after he once said during a 2002 interview that 'capitalism isn't all good' and that 'our current economic system no longer benefits the workers and the people'.
Family or Country First? - Taylor is a very strong family man, with a conviction that he needed to be with his wife and children as much as possible. While many have seen this as a great positive, it has resulted in him lagging behind on work and emails and the like.
An Unintentional Negative - While Taylor has wonderful charisma and skill at speaking, some of his statements in the past have made him seem cynical and self-focused, perhaps working in life only to benefit himself. In his later years to the present he has attempted to offset this belief by expanding his support for more progressive programs and submitting himself to greater scrutiny of his finances and activities, however his past continues to haunt him to this day.
Overflow of Confidence - Taylor's successes in re-election and in Congress has filled him with a form of overconfidence and perhaps even a cockiness, which could damage his public view in the coming election and perhaps even cost him his dream of becoming a Senator.

Biography: (Minimum 2-3 paragraphs)

Francis Jackson "Frank" Taylor was born on 3 July 1951 to Roger Taylor and Moira Jackson, a wealthy Santa Clara couple who rose from the middle-class to the higher echelons of California society thanks to Mr. Taylor's successful financial business and Mrs. Taylor's knack at keeping tabs on expenses and earnings. Living a privileged life from the very start, Frank studied at prestigious elementary and high schools in Santa Clara before going off to study at UC Berkeley in Berkeley, California, graduating in 1973 with a degree in political science.

His education proved vital in deciding in future, for in his high school years he harnessed his seemingly natural ability to speak with charisma and wonderful talent when he successfully secured multiple terms as class president. He was a highly respected member of the high school and later his college debate club.

Although his degree didn't match it Frank went to work for his father's insurance company first as an advisor to his father than later as an in-house law expert for the firm. In 1979 he married Marilyn Baker, a Santa Clara banker and financier he met through work. Their first child, Sarah, was born in 1984 and their second child, Marcus, was born in 1991. Their third, Lily, was born in 1993.

In 1990, Taylor departed his father's insurance firm to join not-Cal Dooley's Democratic run for California 17th Congressional district seat in the House of Representatives as deputy campaign manager. When Dooley successfully won the election, Taylor took his first steps into the American political scene. He would return to his father's firm until the 1992 elections, when he would serve as not-Leon Panetta's campaign manager in 1992 and 1993. He used his interest and passion in politics as well as his expertise in managing finances - a skill secured from his time at his father's firm - to support and eventually secure not-Panetta's victory.

After spurring onwards in politics, Taylor accepted a position as a professor of political science back home at Santa Clara University to help his wife take care of their newborn child, Lily Taylor. He held this position and taught political science at SCU until 1995, when with the support of his dying father and his family, made the decision to run for Congress.

In the 1996 elections, Francis Taylor ran for and successfully won the 17th Congressional District of California, defeating Democratic incumbent not-Sam Farr with 51.78% to 48.22%. He ran on a platform of pushing aggressively for progress and 'getting Congress' gears turning again', as well as supporting the rise of dot-com companies which he believed would 'go big' in the next two decades.

His first few terms, following re-election in 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2004, where characterized mainly by him voting alongside other socially and fiscally progressive Democrats, though at times he toed progressives' line and voted more conservatively, particularly after the September 11 attacks when he voted in favor of the PATRIOT Act and other legislation proposed by the Republicans in the wake of the most disastrous attack on America in recent history. In 2004, he became the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

Other Info: He is rumored to be considering a run for a Senate seat, possibly in 2010.

Reposting for mod review :D

I’d like to see a personal weakness here. “Progressive or socialist” in a D+20 congressional district is not exactly a weakness in of itself, and the fact that he’s wealthy means he gets a distinct advantage otherwise. Please let us know when you’re done with your revision.

Just to clarify, Woolworth changed his name prior to running for Congress, so it would be a little-known albeit public fact.

Mike Pompeo is generating 2024 buzz.

Biography: (Minimum 2-3 paragraphs)
Zahir Muhammad Huriya was born in 1969 in Beirut, Lebanon, as the oldest of three children. He has a younger brother and sister.

Although Zahir is a self-described ‘independent’, he registered Democrat and ran on the Democratic ticket for Senate in the 2006 Pennsylvania elections winning his seat by a thin margin.

Is this fine? Also, I didn't want him to be a Republican anyhow, I just want him to be an independent. But PA basically requires all independents to register with a party to run effectively. But I will make him register Democrat instead.

That looks pretty good! Just a few notes.

1. Who's the faceclaim? Like what RL person are you using for this character?
2. Online followings didn't really exist in 2007 — which makes it significantly harder for candidates to have national support without being an already experienced politician or a solid support base in a particular region (or some exception to that rule, like having a TV show or being as charismatic as Obama).
3. Immigrant and Minority appeal aren't very strong strengths. That doesn't mean you have to change them, I just want to let you know that in 2007 they might damage his chances more than help them.
4. Being a war hawk isn't much of a weakness, although it's not really the most popular position at this time. It's just a political position.
5. I would change "despised by Republican and Democrat hardliners" to being unsupported by the GOP and DNC establishment, because from what you've told me he doesn't really fit in either and definitely holds some views that wouldn't be popular among the party leaderships. Not a request, just a suggestion.
6. Media connections don't really do much as a strength, pretty much all politicians have media connections haha. You could give him something like being charismatic or made for TV instead, I guess.
7. Being a Muslim and having the name "Muhammad" is a weakness in 2007, really sad but true. Expect to get islamophobic attacks from other player characters (though not players themselves hopefully)
8. I'm not opposed to him speaking all those languages (I know multiple polyglots) especially since they're related, but maybe replace Spanish with Hebrew? Someone who speaks Arabic can reportedly learn Hebrew in two weeks, and Spanish seems kinda random on that list. Again, just a friendly suggestion :)
9. The bio is pretty good in my opinion, just some of the weaknesses need tweaking and that's a really minor thing. Great job!
10. Once you fix those things, I'm gonna pass it on to another admin and see what they think (we're doing that now, so there may be a little delay)

Character Application and Information Sheet

NS Nation Name: Yaruqo
Character Name: Oliver Miller
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 35
Character Height: 5' 8"
Character Weight: 162 lbs
Character Position/Role/Job: United States Representative of the 3rd Congressional District of Kansas (2005 - Present); Overland Park City Council Member for the 6th Ward (2000 - 2004)
Character Country/State of Birth: Kansas
Character State of Residence: Kansas
Character Party Affiliation: Democratic
Faceclaim: Pete Buttigieg
Main Strengths: Strong local connections; personable and empathetic; emphasis on constituent services; well-reputed as a “common sense” legislator.
Main Weaknesses: His congressional district will always be a target of the Republican Party, even if he is willing to field their concerns on most legislative priorities. As such, he has to consistently prove to his constituents that the district is better off with his advocacy and legislative record in order to stay one step ahead of a viable Republican opponent. Additionally, Oliver Miller is a closeted gay man. If his secret is revealed, he has no idea how his constituents (or his family) might react, but he doubts that it will be good. He tries to cope with his situation by throwing himself into his work, convinced that, especially with the passage of Kansas Amendment 1, his hopes for happiness are forever dashed, which has inevitably led to episodes of burn out, anxiety, and depression. He also tends to keep his congressional colleagues at arm’s length, maintaining professional relationships, but by and large he doesn’t allow them to get too close to him, for fear that they might discern his closeted status.
Biography:

Oliver Miller was born to Timothy and Jocelyn Miller on February 12, 1972 in Overland Park, Kansas. An only child, his Methodist parents doted on him as he grew up, entertaining him and his various interests - from archeology, to mythology, and ultimately history and politics. He was a loner in high school, with a small circle of friends. His eleventh grade American History teacher went above and beyond to foster Oliver's interest and helped cultivate in him a desire to teach social studies and civics and help other kids feel welcome at school. With a goal in mind, Oliver would enroll into the University of Kansas in the fall of 1990, where he would graduate with a Bachelor's in Secondary History & Government Education in the spring of 1994.

It was in the midst of his college years that Oliver felt that he was not quite like his classmates and friends. Sure, he felt more welcomed here with his larger clique of nerds and Dungeons and Dragons players than he had through his childhood, but this feeling was deeper than that. He had a feeling that he liked men, but with the state of sexual education in Kansas and the Internet still in its relatively infant stages, he didn't really know how to comfortably explore his feelings in a comfortable or safe environment. So instead, he had thrown himself deep into his studies, hoping to excel and push aside these thoughts and feelings whenever they arose. For a time, it worked.

He earned his teaching certification for secondary social studies and began teaching as a secondary substitute teacher in one of the resident school districts back in Overland Park in the fall of 1995, having taken odd jobs in the interim as he prepared for his certification. When the school district finally hired him as a full time teacher in 1996, he was excited to leave his mark. Much as he did with his tertiary studies, he threw himself into his role as a middle school social studies teacher, winning praise from the district and parents alike. He had a reputation for being patient with his students, dedicating time after school to help those who were struggling with assignments or subjects, even just being there for those who had issues at home.

By 1999, Miller had been involved in local Democratic politics for a few years, attending school board meetings and public hearings of the city council, often seen advocating for better public education funding, allowing middle and high school students freedom of information by loudly standing against the “banning” of books from school and public libraries, and better resources for student mental health. No longer satisfied with sitting on the sidelines, Oliver decided to run for a city council seat in the 1999 municipal elections, which were nonpartisan in nature. With the help of his family, friends, and Johnson County Democrats, Oliver managed to out-organize his opponent and won on a platform that focused on improving mental health care in Overland Park, maintaining the city's fiscal responsibility by balancing low property taxes with smart investments, and increased spending in infrastructure and transportation spending to overhaul the city's roads and sewers, becoming one of two city council members for Overland Park’s 6th Ward, in the south of the city.

On the city council, he championed programs to improve mental health care and mental health care in the city, urging his colleagues to remember that, "Not all wounds are visible, and we can only guess at the battles our families, friends, and colleagues are wrestling with." This initiative ultimately passed, and Councilman Miller would go on to sponsor and co-sponsor other pieces of legislation with some of his more liberal or center-left leaning colleagues on the council to push through projects that would make the city's downtown areas safer for pedestrians, introduce smart sewer programs to the city, and initiatives to set up green energy infrastructure. There were some victories, and there were some defeats - among them was a bill to reform the city government so that the elected positions of Mayor and City Councilmember would be full time and paid accordingly, his reasoning being that governing is a full time job, and that, “As our city grows, our constituents expect their elected representatives to be there for them to remedy and address growing issues that they face.”

In January 2003, Congressman Lewis Rohr announced that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and would not be seeking re-election for the US House in 2004. The news sent shockwaves through the Kansas Democratic Party. A Blue Dog Democrat, Rohr had been the first Democrat elected to Congress in 37 years after his initial election in 1998. Miller decided to throw his hat in the ring, running as a center-left candidate that had a strong, local record, who was able to work across the aisle in City Council, and as a Democrat who was an advocate for sensible, common sense solutions to the problems that Americans were concerned with. Leaning heavily on Democratic strongholds in Lawrence, Wyandotte County, and Overland Park, he sought to energize young voters, suburban women, and Black voters within Wyandotte County to support him in the primary. It was a gamble that paid off, though now he would be contesting a battleground congressional district during a presidential election. His opponent was NotKrisKobach, a conservative law professor and former Department of Justice attorney, who had won the Republican primary against a moderate.

In the 2004 general election, the noticeably unmarried Miller was met with barbs by NotKobach at the latter’s rallies, some of them surprisingly uncivil for a high stakes congressional campaign in a suburban district. Miller, for his part, continued to campaign without responding to the attacks, focusing instead on championing proposals for Medicare expansion, better funding for public education and transportation projects to better serve the Kansas City Metropolitan area and Lawrence, as well as national security issues, including a desire to limit domestic surveillance powers that were enjoyed by the Cush Administration. In debates, NotKobach erred and focused on attacking Miller on his stances regarding abortion (Miller was unapologetically pro-choice) and the death penalty (he sided with Governor NotSebelius in opposing capital punishment and had lauded the Kansas Supreme Court’s declaration of capital punishment as being unconstitutional), and Miller made sure to broadside NotKobach on his “misplaced priorities” and hammered him for supporting cuts in Medicare, supporting freezing cost of living adjustments, and for his support of privatizing Social Security, declaring that NotKobach’s policies would, “...severely disadvantage elderly and disabled Kansans who depend on these benefits to survive, all while burying the country in debt and imposing more taxes on the middle class and the poor.” Election night produced a welcome, yet surprising result for the young Miller: with nearly 55% of the vote, he had not only defeated a Republican backed by the White House and maintained Democrats’ control of a critical House seat, but he had managed to build upon Rohr’s prior electoral successes and, for the first time since Rohr had won his first election in 1998, won more than 52% of the vote.

After he was elected, Miller did what he could to shepherd common sense legislation through the House, which had remained in Republican hands. Among these, Miller sponsored legislation that raised the death gratuity paid to the family of a soldier who died in combat to $100,000, building upon a bill that his Democratic predecessor had sponsored in the prior Congress to raise the gratuity from $12,000 to $50,000. He also voted for gun control legislation, and voted with the League of Women Voters and NARAL 100% of the time. In 2005, he campaigned with what would eventually grow to become the Kansas Equality Coalition against the Amendment 1 referendum, which would go further than existing state law and declare that the recognition or performing of same-sex marriages or civil unions by the state would be unconstitutional. Despite his best efforts to frame the amendment as “legally redundant”, only Douglas County strongly opposed the referendum, which passed in April 2005, with Johnson and Wyandotte Counties narrowly supporting the proposed amendment. It is rumored that this particular defeat stung Miller, though few will confirm that if asked, and fewer still would be in a position to explain why. In 2006, Miller won re-election with 64% of the vote, riding on a wave of anti-Cush sentiment and ensuring that Democrats would win the House that year. Miller hopes to build on these successes and pass legislation that would restore proper oversight and controls over domestic and international surveillance, as well as to improve the state of healthcare and public education across the country.

Biography: Born on February 4th, 1955, Eleanor McQuarrie's early life was spent in suburban conditions within a sheltered small family, her father being a retired judge and mother a small business hairdresser. In school she displayed a preference for humanities related subjects rather than scientific ones, which only became solidified after her graduation. She successfully applied into the law course in the University of Mississippi Law Center, a decision mainly influenced by her adoration towards her father and his career path. From a lengthy period lasting 1988 till 2003 she studied to earn a PhD in her chosen field. During this time she met her future husband Edward Brosnan while also participating in a limited amount of volunteer work on the behalf of 'Temporary Assistance for Needy Families', her main political orientation started to form on the basis of protecting children & preserving family values. During the 1980s and 1990s Anti-Abortion protests occurred around Jackson's abortion clinics which Eleanor frequently attended.

In 1980 she earned her Law PhD from Mississippi's University, for work related reasons she settled in Laurel to become an Attorney for potential clients. She married and subsequently renamed to Brosnan in 1984. In that same year she was heavily involved in a publicised Court Case, defending a client who had been assaulted as a minor by one of their extended-family members. The case was covered by local news, Eleanor appearing in some newspaper quotations and clips covering the occurrence. She used this opportunity as a beginning to fostering an outward reputation of being morally upright. The case ended only as a slight victory for the attorney, as the defendant agreed to a lighter plea bargain. From 1984-1990 she involved herself with the Children's Advocacy Centres of Mississippi, using involvement with the organisation as a way of improving her credentials related to social issues in the State. Her time as an independent Attorney was overall average, many of her cases being minor disputes and grievances.

In 1991 there was an opening in the FBI Jackson branch for an Attorney, Eleanor applied and was accepted after a series of rigorous security related interviews amongst an extensive field of other applicants. She advised the FBI on legal & jurisdiction related matters, giving counsel on a large selection of issues in the litigation sphere. As a member of the organisation she witnessed some of the inner workings of the Government and how security was handled. This was also the place where she developed an interest in politics in terms of management and hierarchy. Due to the classified nature of her work there isn't a large amount of information related to her workings in this line of work.

In 1994 a decision was taken by her to leave the FBI position in pursuit of other lines of legal work, this was mainly due to her giving birth to a son in the previous year and subsequent arguments over care-taking. The dispute was settled by Eleanor through manipulating Edward into quitting his work to become a stay at home husband. Her resounding education and previous involvement with the Government lead to her nomination by Mississippi's Governor to the Mississippi Supreme Court, the appeal of her becoming a justice was the fact that Democrats would support her nomination as she is a member of their party. Her nomination passed on mostly bi-partisan lines, she filled the spot of a retiring senior Justice who had not served out his reaming term. After a year a Special Election was held for her position as stated by the law, she won by 50.6% of the vote despite her status as a 'temporary' justice. Her main focus was on menial family related cases although she showed some opposition to the death penalty when repeals were presented to the Court, so much so that she garnered some attention from publications for her disagreement with the practice. A portion of her monthly salary was given to a charity organisation named 'Mississippi Families For Kids' during her tenure as a Justice. Often times she used her position a platform for political convictions, such as supporting the creation of a 'Mississippi Freedom Trail' as to celebrate African-American rights.

In 1999 she resigned from the Supreme Court out of personal ambition, beginning to outline her political manifesto through mainstream media and various local appearances. She backs the expansion of Medicaid and it's financing, tuition-free community college, ceasing corporate tax cuts in the state, ending the closure of rural hospitals, supporting pro-life legislation and upholding light gun regulations. Her main viewpoints were tilted towards a family & childcare related focus. She launched an exploratory committee into the Mississippi gubernatorial election on March 2nd 1999, officially announcing a three weeks later in rented town hall. The overall tone of the campaign was focused on her self-perception as a moderate Democrat, attempting to gain favour with rural & socially conservative voters. In the Democratic Primary she faced criticism and opposition from more progressive candidates, outlining her closer proximity with the main viewpoints of the RNC. In response Brosnan's campaign shifted focus on the need for a moderate to unify Mississippi's Democratic Chapter, stating that the Democrats winning the Governorship would be more beneficial than 'fantasising about impossible populist victories'. Her attempts at appealing to both moderates and progressives was somewhat successful, as she won the primary by 59% of the vote.

Can we get a time system? We've had people in the IC thread go from March 3rd to March 7th and then back to March 3rd, is there any set limit on how many days can pass since the last IC post?
