Because the bill is going to be killed...it's better that Republicans don't vote in favor of amending a bill that they will kill? Just against it?

You are lining up Republicans to vote against removing references to embryonic stem cell research. That's insane.

Here is the Republican platform from 2008:

In that regard, we call for a major expansion of support for the stem-cell research that now shows amazing promise and offers the greatest hope for scores of diseases — with adult stem cells, umbilical cord blood, and cells reprogrammed into pluripotent stem cells — without the destruction of embryonic human life.

Claassen's amendment would transform this bill into the ideal Republican version of the bill if it passed. And it looks like, with the Democrats voting in favor of it (for some reason), it would actually pass! Except, now Republican leadership is voting against it.

Absurd.

Bush vetoed a Stem Cell bill in 2007? What's absurd is that you seem to think Republicans collaborating with Democrats on a stem cell research bill makes sense.

Furthermore, umbilical cords do not come from adults.

Yeah, he vetoed an embryonic stem cell bill. Claassen's replaces all references to embryonic stem cells with adult stem cells. And yes, umbilical cord donations do come from adults, lol, it's not babies writing consent forms to donate them.

I am begging you not to have Sommo as HmL. You have such a poor grasp of policy that you're continually forcing the rest of us into absurd policy positions. If you have him as some kooky RINO backbencher, that's fine. But in a leadership role he drags the rest of us down with him.

OK, I've been looking back through it, and so far I think only the PADT Act is subject to a hold (CHS). If there are any other bills Senate Republicans wish to place a hold on, just let me (SML) know!

Elderly He is very old, and also very establishment. Old statements that were then popular opinions could haunt him.
Way About Him He comes off as very angry and stern. From his military days, he is still formal and doesn't use slang, barely even using contractions.
Biography: (Minimum 2-3 paragraphs)
Adam J. Dew
Adam James Dew (b. Feb. 3rd, 1931) is an American politician and officer currently serving as the Representative from the 1st District of Kansas. A lifelong Republican, he served 2 tours in the Vietnam War before being elected in 1960.
When he was done with a University of Kansas degree in law at 24, in 1954, he enlisted in the US Army, starting a Private First Class. In 1954, he was deployed to the Korean War. He was scraped in the head by a North Vietnamese bullet 5 months into his term. He received both a promotion and the Purple Heart for his fighting. In 1956, he was sent home with full honors. He got a job as a lawyer and progressed before he ran for the 1st District of Kansas. He won after receiving gifts from corporate interests. He was a decisive figure, harshly opposing the civil rights movement and saying MLK Jr should’ve been assassinated sooner in private conversation, although this is disputed. He voted against all notable civil rights acts.
He served easily for 22 straight terms, rarely seeing significant opposition. He opposed climate reform, gun reform, gay rights, and other new movements, although he has publicly retracted his statements about civil rights and halfheartedly apologized for voting against civil rights acts.

Early Life
Born on February 3rd, 1931 to a mildly-successive lawyer and a secretary named Will and Jeanine Dew in Garden City, Kansas, Adam was born into the Great Depression. This experience was very influential to his life, and it made him resent those in powers. At 14, America joined the Second World War. He aided the war effort by participating in rallies and working as a cleaner at a nearby base.
Dew was supportive of the nuclear attacks and believed they should have been executed sooner. This is one of the first times he supported using Weapons of Mass Destruction. He was accepted as a student at the University of Kansas, where he studied law. Following his graduation, he decided to enroll in the same college for Law School. In 1954, he joined the US Army 1953. After training, he was deployed to Vietnam where he was to aid int he fights as an advisor and aid against the communist North.
Despite his non-combative role, he was caught in the crossfires of a battle. Defending himself valiantly, he was grazed by a bullet in the neck. After being flown to Japan, intensive procedures were initiated, although ultimately he remained alive. He was given the Purple Heart and promotion to Sergeant.
He quietly practiced law, arguing mostly about incompetence and wrongful termination for 6 years. In 1960, he started a campaign for Representative.

Position
Campaign

He ran on the platforms of anti-communism and a rejection of the civil rights movements. Due to his strong hate for liberals, communism, and unionism, he received strong support in the heavily Republican state. He also received funds from large companies, including coal and energy corporations.
He decided to run on the Republican ticket, although at the time he more aligned with Democrats socially. This was because of his fiscal conservatism, which he shared with Republicans, and his sense that the Democrats were getting more liberal and the republicans were getting more conservative.
In this election, he built relationships with several companies. These include many oil companies like Shell, BP, and Chevron, many lobby groups, and groups representing Christians like the Protestant and Lutheran Churches.
He won a decisive, 64% victory against his reformist candidate. In his Acceptance Speech, he stressed the importance of the Free Market and the dangers of communists, one of which he said was his opponent.
As Representative
He was inaugurated on November 12th, 1960. He first went about organizing his office, to which he appointed several representatives of oil companies to his office. He voted against all 10 civil rights acts which came from the government. He voted strongly in favor of oil and other fossil fuels.
In 1964, he introduced the Civil Rights Reasonability Act of 1964, which was meant to repeal the Civil Rights Acts of 1875, 1960, and 1964. This failed, and among minorities, his popularity was drastically reduced from the little before. He faced major opposition that election but came out on top.
He was mostly quiet after that, voting against any liberal bills. He was still a loud voice, but mostly just spoke rhetoric that he didn’t turn into bills. He strongly supports [INSERT MOST CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN HERE] and hopes to make a deal to endorse him, although that could be changed with a good enough offer.

Other Info: Yeah.... needless to say he's an asshole who's policies I hate.
