An Expedition Westward (OOC/Signups/Dark FanT)

Postby Helidan » Wed Jan 19, 2022 10:46 am

By the decree of Auldpatherach Ulethien Cozeantiil, and by extension the Auldpathroi Kadem, an expedition will be formed to survey Mord Eleth to see if colonization is possible. The expedition will also be charged with securing any artifacts of the old Soevnoylite Empire, with artifacts from the last emperor, Seraphaen VII, being of utmost interest to the Auldpathroi Kadem. All expeditioners will receive four golden valai upon signing on, and a monthly stipend of twenty silver coren and one valai for every artifact discovered. Should Mord Eleth be viable for colonization, each expeditioner will receive a plot of land and be exempt from taxes for ten years. One battalion of 800 under Auldpather Thaoros Hierakenei will accompany the expedition to ensure that any members without combat experience are not slaughtered by the Morthelite scourge. All expeditioners must sign on in Corethay Valis at the Governor's Palace before the ninth of Horox to be able to join the expedition. Varel Imralt!

Hello, and welcome to my dark fantasy RP, "An Expedition Westward". As the title and the lore blob above this tells you, in this RP you will be a member of an expedition headed to the cursed isle of Mord Eleth, once a shining beacon of civilization, now cursed and filled with the undead, and worse. Now, while there will most certainly be combat, the expedition is ultimately a scholarly pursuit. You can be an archaeologist, a scholar, a theologian, or the fantasy equivalent of a journalist. Or you can be a mercenary or adventurer, a mage or a knight. Hell, you can even be a priest. Now, onto the rules and some lore to help you understand the setting.

Rules:
1. No metagaming or godmodding. This should be obvious.
2. No OP characters. While magic is incredibly powerful, it requires immense focus to avoid accidentally turning the mage into human (or fey) soup.
3. My word is final, along with any Co-OPs I decide to appoint.
4. Each post must be at least one paragraph long.
5. Have fun!

Though the ancient Soevnoylites had a name for the Continent, that name was lost when Emperor Seraphaen VII tore open the heavens and Byld Eleth became Mord Eleth, the Dead Island. After the apocalyptic destruction of the Soevnoylite Empire, most of the Continent is desolate wasteland, with only the far north and the lake cities of Khior being habitable, though nomadic Sephin warbands will claim that all one needs to live is easily available in the wastes. In the far north lies the Aloyoisian Archcantery, a collection of kingdoms, duchies, and other realms united under the holy word of the Archcanter, Jadisanos IV. In the south, the last continental remnant of Soevoylite rule grows fat and wealthy off of trade with Dekhaj. The Khior Free Cities are a confederation of city-states ruled by a council of the wealthiest families, called the Auldpathroi Kadem. In the east are endless ruined cities, corrupted by whatever crawled out of the hole in the sky, with the great wall called Horoxeos's Folly acting as a reminder to human mortality.

Once a backwater province of the great Soevnoylite Empire, the Free Cities are now one of the most wealthy and powerful nations on the planet. Ruled by the Auldpathroi Kadem from the Marble City of Corethay Valis, the Free Cities claim to be the true successors to the Soevnoylite Empire. Highly stratified, there is almost no room for advancement for those not born into one of the ancient families. Mages, however, are an exception, as they are always wanted for their power.

Founded in the immediate aftermath of the Collapse by Governor Aloyois Magaion, the Canticles are headed by an Archcanter. The Canticles preach that it was human hubris that caused the collapse of the decadent Soevnoylite Empire, and that it was due to the refusal of the Empire to eradicate heretics that demons entered the mortal plane. Aloyoisians wish to purge the world of false faiths and any remnants of the old Empire, at any cost. The Canticles' fiercely xenophobic rhetoric has caused strained relations with the border nations of Stadtmark, the Princedom of Olsk, and the Aulaisian duchies of Thieulois.
(They're generic Fantasy hoomans)

Soev Noy is the King of the Gods and the spiritual Emperor of the Soevnoylites. He is the god of war, rulership, the sun, and dragons. Though many of the gods are believed dead, Soev Noy has occasionally manifested Himself in an avatar even after the collapse of His Empire. Many southerners still worship Him.

The fey, or fhaen, are long-lived humanoids thought to have been exterminated by the Soevnoylites. They were not exterminated, and after the fall of the Empire they came out of hiding and integrated with the remaining human nations. Powerful magi, many aristocratic families have intermarried with the fey to produce the Elves, humans with slightly less pointy ears then the fey but all their magic, though they do not live as long. (Typical fey lifespan is 5000 years. Elven lifespan is 400) The fey do not actually worship any gods, as they believe that they are as close to gods as mortals can get.

Would be down to play as some kind of Fantasy Joseph Smith. Maybe a map to illustrate the known territories and uncharted lands would be a nice addition to the lore? (:

I actually have a sketch of the map, so I'll post that.

More info would help flesh out the character. So far, I'd like to play a rather average hero-guy...

Specific question, how common are magic items? It there some methodology to them? Can any weapon harm demons or is magic, special material or church blessing or something like that on the weapon necessary?

Character Application
Name: Leif von Thursen
Bio:
Born in Stadtmark as third son of a comparably well-of count.
Young Leif had many liberties as a child and used them to play with the kids of the father's knights, leading them on imaginary adventures.
Early in his childhood, he was given into the temporary care of Vades Kelovalen, the local Fhaen "Druid", to see, what magic the boy could be taught. As it turned out, Leif, while not able to grasp the concept of spellcasting, hexing or weaving a simple charm, he did discover two magical senses of some use.
Leif's father died when the boy was still young, but his oldest Half-Brother cared for him like a father and raised him to one day become the Marshal or a high ranking scholar and tactician at the court.
In his early teens, Leif often helped out guarding the livestock and spend a few month each with the leather-worker and the tinker.
As he became a squire his natural talent with weapons started to show. Most remarkable, Leif was just as dexterous with his left hand as he was with the right. In the military exercises, he showed no ambition to get assigned to the command unit of his team, seeking to lead the scouts instead.
With 19, he won the tournament to the honor of the birth of his nephew, in the discipline of fighting with the sword and buckler (which given the young age was quite the surprise to everyone).

However, he felt he could not stay at his family's court as he wanted to see more of the world, Starting with the lands of Khior. So the next time a mercenary band from the free cities traveled through Stadtmark, he hired with them. His Mercenary-Commander was a rather competent man and the dangers of the job was significantly below what was to be expected; almost every time it came to physical violence, Leif saw himself on the side of clearly superior numbers and equipment.
At first Leif had a hard time getting close to the fellow fighters of the company; although a number of them were of noble background, he stood out in peerage above the others as brother to a count (and his equipment reflected this divide). However, after several battles this gap was bridged.

Leif took a leave from his company when he heard of the Auldpatherach's call to join the expedition.

Age: 24
Coat-of-Arms:
Image

Equipment:
Blessed (?) Sword
Big Dagger
Two throwing axes
Enchanted Bullwhip (self-grappling)
Magic Amulet (protection from curses / hostile magic)
Armor (Brigantine w. armored gloves, boots, schynbalds. Gambeson. Barbute helmet)
Hammock, Bedroll, towel, spare close, washing/shaving bag
Kit to maintain weapons/armor
week's rations and waterskin
Simple mirror, some chalk, 50ft rope
Tinderbox, fire-drill-set

Strengths: Ambidextrous, strong, fast, good fighter and outdoorsman, clever
Weaknesses: Overconfident, impractically honorable, somewhat naive when it comes to intrigue
Magic: Leif can feel nearby magic (sometimes, though not always, with some idea of its direction and nature) and can see unusually well in the darkness.
Faith: Not really

Magic weapons are not incredibly common but are not incredibly rare either. They can either be enchanted by a mage via willing a spell into it. Anything crafted by the fey is almost certainly magic. The gods themselves wielded many artifacts that would be much more powerful than either of the previous two. Demons can be harmed and killed with simple steel, but anything blessed by a priest (of any religion) would do more damage, and a magic weapon made to specifically kill demons would also do increased damage.

Character Application
Name: Ozren Jasienski
Bio: Ozren was the second son of a noble in the Princedom of Olsk, and as such did was never meant to inherit his father's lands. Instead, he was trained from a young age to be a warrior and a leader of men, expected to fight for his father once his father was less able, and in the place of his brother, so that his brother could focus on family. An internal conflict in the Princedom saw his father summoned to the capital when a new Prince came to power, but at a feast following his coronation, the Prince began to call out the names of Chieftans who had not supported him cause in the conflict. These men were arrested, to be put to death. But upon hearing of their plight, many loyal men of the lesser nobles rallied, and a battle ensued in the Royal Halls, ultimately leading to a practical massacre as the hall was closed off by ambitious men, and set alight. Ozren's father died in the blaze, as did the Prince.

When a new Prince came to power the following year, he demanded tribute, but it was much too extortionate, and although his brother agreed, Ozren did not. They ended up publicly arguing over it whilst drunken, and Ozren threatened to usurp his brother if his brother was unwilling to protect his own people from those who claimed too much from them. His brother drew his blade and attacked him, but Ozren disarmed him and fought him before being pulled away by his brother's bodyguards. Humiliated, Stoycho Jasienski had his brother flogged before banishing from his lands.

The new Prince had heard both of Ozren's indignant response to the call for tribute, and was engaged in a war of his own against rebellious nobles, and external raiders, and called up Ozren to fight for his cause, hoping he would die. Instead Ozren proved himself in numerous actions, but was accused of ambitiously attempting to overthrow the Prince's appointed war-marshals. Ozren had found himself a victim of his own success, and was exiled. This was four years ago. Taking loyal men with him, he became the leader of a small warband, occasionally involved in the conflicts of Olsk, but also in Stadtmark, Aloyoisia, and Aleusia. Eventually, his band was reduced despite some people joining, and he fought, travelled, and worked his way south through Moral Imras, getting involved in the conflicts of the Iudrim clans.

Ozren now finds himself in the lands of the Khior Free Cities, with little to his name. Along the way his followers have been killed, have betrayed him, or have found new places to settle. A number have taken up new work in Khior. For three months, Ozren has found himself doing odd jobs, as a bodyguard, or caravan guardsman, or as a martial instructor. Upon hearing of the decree of Auldpatherach Ulethien Cozeantiil, Ozren was excited by the new opportunity, here was a chance to start anew, away from old enemies, to adventure, and to do what he did best- fight, brawl, and travel.

(This last bit is only if it's allowed and will just allow me to write more and have more interactions, I'm willing for them to be killed as well-obviously Ozren is mortal too).Three close companions, Zivko Wrba, Perun Mendaleev, and Grozdan Trifonov, who prefer to fight with bow, greataxe, and lance respectively, have joined Ozren. Seeing as Ozren has more to offer than them, and that the expense would be too great merely for three mercenaries and their leader to all receive the offered money, he has requested of the governor Corethay Valis that they be paid as a group eight golden valai for signing on.

Age: 29
Equipment: Weaponry (Some of it is carried on horseback, Ozren will choose what to use). Two-Handed Bearded Axe, a one-handed battle axe, three throwing axes, a shestopyor (steel six-bladed mace), a seax, a rondel dagger, two throwing knives, and a composite bow with three quivers of arrows- 14 bodkin, 33 regular, and 11 broadheads. 75ml of poison in a small glass bottle.
Armour: A closed mail goggled helmet, mail shoulder guards, leather armour with iron plates, plated leather gloves, plated leather boots. Two round oaken shields, one is spare.
Other clothing: One set of fine clothes, three sets of regular clothes, an arming cap, four changes of undergarments, leather gloves, leather boots.
Mounts: One courser with lamellar half-barding, one without, a packhorse.
Other equipment: A two-man tent, five torches, flint and steel, some kindling, a hunting knife, a sewing kit. Two gold valai, fifteen silver coren.
(If allowed each companion has personal equipment to sustain them for a week, as well as one courser and one packhorse between all three).
Strengths: Veteran- Ozren is a trained killer who has honed his experiences in battles, skirmishes, and duels, and has fought using a variety of weapons.
Resilient- Ozren has been exiled by his own family, has had men betray him, and has seen many friends killed, some whilst protecting him or following his orders. It's left him unshaken by blood and death.

Other Traits (Mix of strength and weakness): Fiercesome- Due to his grizzled nature, stature, confidence, and prowess, Ozren may scare regular people, which whilst handy against enemies in battle, it can lead to friends and followers not revealing the whole truth to him, or people finding him untrustworthy, or even unlikeable.

Weaknesses: Suspicious- Having seen betrayal, weakness, turncoats, and cowardice, but more so having moved between so many places, Ozren struggles to make new friends, or to confide in people, taking a considerable amount of time before he'll trust them.
Emotionally immature- Ozren struggles to process other people's emotions atop his own, and often fails to understand just how upset other people may be, or even worse, dislikes them for it, thinking their struggles are little compared to his own.
He often outlets his emotions through anger or drunk foolery, or a combination of the two.
Undiplomatic- Negotiations are tedious, full of ulterior motives, or unnecessary compromises. If an agreement or bargain has to be struck, it should be done swiftly. Ozren would rather challenge someone than write a treatise with them, this can cause him to ruffle feathers, or upset others unnecessarily.

OOC Comment: Dw I'm not trying to make this guy into some kind of stereotype or just be an unpleasant person to be with, I'll RP it fairly, and his strengths and weaknesses are influenced by his backstory.

Faith: Ancestor Reverence and Natural Spiritualism.

Thank you, I look forward to it, hopefully we can get some more people on board soon because there aren't normally many Fantasy RPs so it'll be good to have one. I love that you've worldbuilt it yourself and have the sketch map. I hope the bit of lore I've created fits in okay.

Thank you! I intentionally left lore in the North a little light to allow players more freedom to build their characters.

Okay, then I think I submit...

Character Application
Name: Leif von Thursen
Bio:
Born in Stadtmark as third son of a comparably well-of count.
Young Leif had many liberties as a child and used them to play with the kids of the father's knights, leading them on imaginary adventures.
Early in his childhood, he was given into the temporary care of Ovades Kelovalen, the local Fhaen "Druid", to see, what magic the boy could be taught. As it turned out, Leif, while not able to grasp the concept of spellcasting, hexing or weaving a simple charm, did have some rudimentary spark of magic in him. Kelovalen discovered two magical senses and taught Leif to use them.

However, he felt he could not stay at his family's court as he wanted to see more of the world, starting with the Aloyoisian Canticles. So the next time a mercenary band from the church state traveled through Stadtmark, he hired with them. His Mercenary-Commander was a rather competent man and the dangers of the job was significantly below what was to be expected. The mercenaries of the Black Dragon company were often hired to clients in groups ranging from just a small party to the full company of just over 200 and in almost all cases, they outnumbered the opposition, keeping casualties on their side rather low.

At first Leif had a hard time getting close to the fellow fighters of the company; although a number of them were of noble background, he stood out in peerage above the others as brother to a count (and his equipment reflected this divide). However, after several battles this gap was bridged, as the fellow mercenaries realized, that Leif was clearly pulling his weight in the front-line.

Leif took a leave from his company when he heard of the Auldpatherach's call to join the expedition.

Age: 24
Appearance:
Image

Coat-of-Arms:
Image

Equipment:
- Blessed Sword (Blessed by a Canter of the Canticles, high quality double-edged sword, ~72 cm blade length)
- Big Dagger/Survival knife
- Two throwing axes
- Enchanted Bullwhip (The whip grapples anything struck by it, if the wielder so chooses and releases it when this is wanted, too. It's grip-strength is comparable to that of one hand/arm of a very strong human)
- Magic Amulet (The exact extend of the power of this protective amulet are unknown but it's supposed to protect Leif from curses and similar hostile magic)
- Armor (Brigantine w. armored gloves, boots, schynbalds. Gambeson. Barbute helmet)
- Packing Backpack
- Hammock, Bedroll, towel, spare close, washing/shaving bag
- Kit to maintain weapons/armor
- Compass, simple mirror, some chalk, 50ft rope
- Tinderbox, fire-drill-set
- some sheets of parchment, ink and feather in water-proof casing
- week's rations and waterskin

Strengths: Ambidextrous, strong, fast, good fighter and outdoorsman, clever when it comes to puzzles and tactical thinking.
Weaknesses: Overconfident, impractically honorable, somewhat naive when it comes to intrigue
Magic: Leif can feel nearby magic (sometimes, though not always, with some idea of its direction and nature) and can see unusually well in the darkness.
Faith: Leif has previously attended to both, old Soevnoylite polytheism and to the Canticles, without being a faithful follower of either.

My WIP here

Character Application
Name: Bruno Araric
Bio: Born to an elvish family in Olsk, Bruno (called Brunet, meaning “little Bruno” or “little brown one” by family and friends for his short height and dark complexion) was the youngest son of a battle-mage and a cantress. His mother instilled religion and faith in her children, although Bruno himself never became quite as religious as she is, he considers himself a spiritual person. His father trained all three of his children in magic and swordplay in order so that they may be able to protect themselves, his older brother followed in his father’s footsteps and became a battle-mage while his older sister found herself drawn to the healing arts, working in one of Olsk’s premier clinics. Bruno however found himself more immersed in art, especially sculpture. Ever since an early age he would be seen whittling bits of wood and chipping away and clay or stone, and while his mother was somewhat disappointed as she hoped that one of her children at least would become a cantor like her, nonetheless they sent their youngest to art school in the capital, where he learned a technique for fusing his magic with his creations.

Over the years he founded himself a small workshop, his clientele ranging from middle-class to noblemen and he earned a rather decent living, as well as gaining a small amount of fame back home. Whilst working on some commissions for a lord's villa garden, he was spotted by an older gentleman watching him work. Seemingly impressed by what he saw, the gentleman invited Bruno to the palace as a guest, to display his work before the Prince. The gentleman he would later learn was one of the prince's court painters who soon became a mentor and friend to the young elf, who officially joined the retinue of royal artists the prince employed about three years ago.
He never planned to be an adventurer, and certainly didn't plan on joining this expedition that was being put together...he was content to work on his art for the rest of his life, but was eventually persuaded to join after hearing his brother talk about all there was to see and do, that there were things out there that were never encountered within these borders. It put stirrings in Bruno's mind, and after some time of mulling it over he decided that maybe a bit of worldly experience would be good for him, foolish as that may sound.
Age: 26
Coat-of-Arms: (if noble)
Equipment: A short sword and dagger, a collection of small marble figurines to serve as both magical foci and summons, five days' worth of food rations,
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
Magic: Bruno’s speciality is conjuration, which he achieves by using miniatures of statues he’s carved as the focus. The spirit animates the statues a lot like summons
Faith: (optional)

Character Application
Name: Willis Philips
Bio:

Born in the vat-tube of the Magistarian Research Institute, Willis was the direct result of a human-fey breeding program(elf). During the apocalyptic destruction of the Soevnoylite Empire, the institute - and their discoveries - were pulled underground and magically sealed; the staff evacuating into a portal to never be seen again. Once the ice-glyphs powering Willis's crypto sleep coffin failed, the de-frosted elf was thrust into a fun and alien world. He was trapped with no way out. Worst, whatever power source running life support in the institute is drying out.

At first, Willis subsisted on the "self-sustaining" hydroponic garden in the 'botany' section of the institute. But when the artificial sun died out, he resorted to the lab rats festering in 'genetics'. The seal lasted for what seemed to be centuries and decades, and the bottom of the institute is beginning to flood. Fueled by desperate hopes of escape, Willis intensified the study of little trinkets and artifacts and whatever research journals and papers he can find. Luck took pity on him, so he learned magic - of the Soevnoylite era.

Willis casted negation bolts against the ward that enveloped the institute, completely irradiating the lobby. He learned vivomancy to heal from miscasts and accidents. Automation for maintaining the failing machinery of the Magistrate, and divination to calculate how much time he has left until the water gets him. Time passes. Sephin scavengers found the ruined building. They tried to enter, but the seal stands firm. More time passes. A squad of Free City archeologists drills through the seal and pulled Willis out. Using glamour, he landed a cushy job back in Khior. 12 months pass and he's already bored. He heard of the Auldpatherach's call to join an expedition to the land of Mord Eleth, rumored to contain artifacts dating back from the old Soevnoylite Empire. So he signs up.

Age: 101. (69 years in cryosleep, 31 years trapped, 1-year free.)
Coat-of-Arm: None!
Equipment: Cool mage robe, padded in leather armor and shortened around the sleeves for mobility.
Strengths:
31 years of magical knowledge. Magic of the Ancients. Will often go for the most "humorous" route when encountered with a problem. Prefers creative solutions using magic(violence is secondary). Likes to socialize with others and share ideas. Knows Latin, a very powerful language.
Weaknesses:
31 years of darkness, solitude, and rat flesh. Willis's bones are brittle and need a lot of milk. Delicate skin. Bugs love the taste of his blood.
His powers cost him his own morality and his ability to reproduce(this pt sounds a bit cringe tbh). Willis considered it to be a great deal.
Pretty oblivious to the history and customs of the Continent, but tries his best not to judge them.
Magic:
the system involves 5 magical schools(vivomancy, automation, negation, glamour, divination), each with its respective strength and drawbacks.
- Vivomancy is the magic that allows you to alter nature(bio-engineering), like designing critters or growing a pair of wings on a pig. However, the side effects are unpredictable, such as the flying pig sprouting rainbow-colored feathers(unintended). Draws from Nature.
- Automation lets the user create things like golems, bigger magical wands, and airships(magical fabrication) by drawing power from lighting(not to be confused with a storm/lighting mage). This, in turn, pollutes the environment. Draws from the Storm.
- Negation blasts things, counterspells, and is an unstable power source, but leaves behind toxic fallout("nuclear" power). Draws from the Dark Sun, which rests in the mantle of the world.
- Glamour gives users super charisma but also harms their health. Draws from oneself.
- Divination lets users learn about something or someone(for ex. telepathy, magical translation, clairvoyance), but then someone else gets to learn something from the caster in return. Draws from one-another.
Faith: None.

My hope is to make each encounter with other NPC and PCs something unique and entertaining! Will not mock other's race or beliefs, both IC'ly and OOC'ly.

Having read through that app, I really like the backstory and magic system, and I reckon it'll be great to have Willis on board. Did they choose their own name or find something to tell them they were called Willis?

Thanks! I love exploring how magic would interact with constructed worlds, cultures, and ideas.

I haven't really thought that far about the name tbh. I guess I chose Willis Philips since it's just easier to spell and rolls off the tongue lel

Character Application
Name: Laci Ashton
Bio:

Hailing from the Arudenitius Kingdom, Laci is a part of the Ashton Bloodline - a very long line of magicals stemming back to Lacis' great (to the 12th power) grandfather. Laci, due to how the Arudenitius Kingdom/Ashton Bloodlines' Ascendence goes, is an Archduchess and she takes alot of pride in that. Laci either way would've been some kind of magical user because of her Ancestry, but took very well to the Bloodborne, a "race" of blood magicians, sorcerers and wizards. The Bloodborne, in other kingdoms, are thought to be "evil," but they've took a considerable deal of political and magical influence and power in the Kingdom. Laci became very warlike and anxious to fight, to drain her would-be enemies of their Blood - to take it and use it as/with her magic. The Ashtons are a very wealthy house, though Laci has no care when it comes to Materialism or Wealthiness - money is nothing to her. She values experience and friendship way more than material things.

Age: 29 (due to being Bloodborne, she'd look to be 17 or 19 though)
Appearance: except with longer, lighter (more blonde) hair and a tiara on her head.
Coat-of-Arms:
Equipment:
  • Wand
  • Longstaff
  • Thirteen bottles of blood
  • Several elixirs and potions
  • Rusty, spiked and edgy long-dagger
  • Several trinkets of indeterminate appearance
Strengths:
  • Unusually strong (thanks to her time being a Bloodborne)
  • Is able to maintain a very youthful appearance and voice
  • Hopeful, seemingly never running out of hope
  • Good climber
Weaknesses:
  • Not very trusting
  • Closeminded
  • Fire magic
  • Confident to the point of arrogance
  • Hates peasants and non-magicals with a passion
Magic: Bloodborne (she's a blood-sorceress)
Faith: (optional)
