The Crags (Sign-Up | OOC)

Welcome to the Crags...

...a region of jutting, rocky mountains and deep, forested valleys. Several towns and villages have prospered here for centuries, ruled by the families who boast the oldest bloodlines. The center of power for the region lies in the largest town, Hydel, ruled by Lord Titan Madreus, whose family's human lineage is rumored to have mingled with giants.

You have traveled east from the Sword Coast, contracted by a company of merchants who have offered to pay you for your assistance in escorting their caravan. The man who recruited you is called Peter the Bastard. The contract stipulates that they will pay your party a portion of the total now and the rest once they have safely delivered whatever it is they have secreted away in their wagons. The contract forbids you from asking about, let alone peeking at, this item which they guard so closely.

As your party and the caravan nears the mountain pass which is the main entrance to The Crags, your final destination, you try to focus on the final reward which is close at hand, but cannot completely put the strange air of secrecy or the nervous whispers of the merchants out of your mind.

D&D can be pretty challenging to play on a forum, so my goal for this RP is more or less to capture the spirit of fifth edition D&D while still being able to run as smoothly as possible. That means the structure will be more focused on roleplay than math, HOWEVER the skills and abilities of your characters will still come into play when attempting to influence the world and the NPCs in it, as well as combat. I will be controlling all non-player characters.

This campaign is something I worked on myself for a group that I play with IRL, and I'm going to adapt it for play-by-post. There is an underlying plot line, but I won't hold you to it. There is a world i've built here, and you're more than welcome to explore it. It is roughly based on the Forgotten Realms, but the Crags is a region that I created within the wider world of Faerun. Play will be limited to this region for now, but its large enough to allow freedom and immersion.

The pace will obviously be slower than tabletop, and we will be a bit looser. You should not ever dictate the effects of any direct action you take to influence the world or the NPCs. This means that if you are attempting to intimidate an NPC, you will still roll (based on your intimidation skill) and that will determine the degree of your success, and I will write that out. If you are casting a spell that targets somebody else, or breaking down a door, you will roll for that based on the appropriate skill. I will serve to determine success/failure and operate the world around you.

It will work like this: I will set up the scene, your party will each make a post (or a series of posts if necessary) interacting with the scene. You are encouraged to flavor it up with roleplay, but at the end of that you will declare your actions in parentheses if you are attempting to take an action against or influence the world. After that, I will continue or finish the scene based on what you have done (or not done). I really want to emphasize the roleplay, so don't be afraid to give us flavor.

Code: Select all
Name:
Race:
Class:
Backstory:

Human
Elf
Half-Elf
Dwarf
Gnome
Halfling
Half-Orc
Tiefling*
Dragonborn*
Goblin*
Kenku*
Kobold*

* - These races are the most rare, and some may occasionally be treated with prejudice. I will expect higher quality backstories for these characters and how/why they came to be with the group.

Your characters will be level 3. The code serves just as a basic character application. The spoilers contain links to basic info about the races/classes in order to help you form an idea for a character

Fill out the code and submit that here, and then use either of these links to build your full character sheet which you will send to me in TG. Or you can use this sheet to do everything manually. Whether it's a link or a PDF, i don't care. You may have to make an account for DnD Beyond, it's the easiest, but most limited option. To calculate your stats, we are using point buy, and you can find a calculator here.

Your backstory doesn't have to be your entire life story. All I need to know is your reason for, or how you came to join up with the merchant caravan that you are escorting. Basically how you came to be with the party. The common theme will be that you were all recruited by Peter the Bastard to escort his caravan and it's mysterious cargo.

A note on alignment: so, you don't have to stick within the box of a determined alignment. Your characters are free to have their own motivations, morals, convictions, and you are free to conceal them from other players. Try to make them make sense, and I would prefer if you clue me in on any schemes you have going on. Evil characters are alright, but not evil in the sense of disrupting the campaign. A little conflict within the party is fun, but we want to work together and keep the world moving.

If you need help with anything, feel free to ask here or TG me :)

Rule 1 - Do not write the reactions or actions of other characters or NPCs.
Rule 2 - Do not attack your fellow players unless you both agree to combat. I'll expect a good reason for it to occur.
Rule 3 - No chaotic evil characters, or characters who destroy for the sake of destruction/disruption. We want to encourage collaboration and adventure, not wanton murder hobo shit.
Rule 4 - It's like I tell my IRL players. For good or worse, YOUR ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES!
Rule 5 - Have fun!

Name: Urtrumash The Rooker
Race: Half-Orc
Class: Barbarian
Backstory: Urtrumash is a roaming lumberjack making money for himself and his tribe of orcs and half-orcs. He had just finished cutting down some rare trees and was going to sell the logs before he was stopped by Peter the Bastard, who offered him 20 GP to help him and his caravan escort some item into The Crags. Urtrumash accepted given the amount of money being offered to him.

It should be noted that Urtrumash is a little bit of a psychopath, but not in an evil way. Generally speaking, he will do just about anything to complete whatever objective he sets out to complete. For example, he might behead a goblin and use its head to intimidate other goblins to keep them from attacking a settlement. In this way, his moral alignment tends toward Chaotic Neutral.

Accepted! A fine beginning for the party. Just a note for clarity which I was going to address later, you've each individually been paid 75 GP now, and when the delivery is finished Peter has told you that your party will be paid a total sum of 500 gp, divided among you.

If I did anything wrong in filling out the form I tg'd you, let me know.

Name: Thusnelda
Race: Elf
Class: Wizard
Backstory: Thusnelda is a wandering wizard who takes every day as it comes. Cast out from her tribe after a scandalous affair with the chieftain's daughter, she's now on her own but hope to one day return. She was in the neighbourhood when Peter the Bastard offered her a job, and she accepted because a paid adventure is never wrong.

(I'm completely new to this, so if the backstory is conflicting with proper D&D lore I'm ready to change it)

There isn't any proper D&D lore outside of The Forgotten Realms, so you're probably going to be fine.

Ok, I've changed it. Will change the app too, and possibly background, after I hear back from you. Do you prefer it only in tg or should I post the sheet here too like Vaas did?

Awesome, i'll take a look at the app now. I prefer it in my TGs but it's fine if you post it here. Some people just like their character sheets private from other players, me included lol.

I like making the sheet public, mostly because if anyone is trying to determine my character's physical characteristics, they can just look at the sheet. There is the possibility of metagaming (looking at someones stats to determine who should execute a particular action), obviously, but I think it can be easily detected for the most part.

Everything looks good with a couple of exceptions. Your stats go something like 35/27, so you spent 35 skill points out of the 27 youre given. Your Dexterity stat is also higher than it should be at 18, when it should be maxed out at 17 for now. Also youve only got one spell written down. So fix your stats and do your spells please and i'm going to accept this sheet.

I've linked this in the OP, but here is the point buy calculator. Keep it at 27 please. You will always have to neglect some stats to specialize in others when using this system, but its balanced, and once you reach level 4 you get to upgrade on stat with two points, or two stats with one point.

Name: Theanor Vindicus
Race: Half-Elf
Class: Paladin
Backstory:
Theanor Vindicus is the eldest son of the human Duke Tiegan Vindicus and the elven Duchess Ulara Vindicus; the product of an arranged marriage that secured a trade agreement between the Duchy of Serenae and an elven tribe to the north. Though not initially thrilled at the arrangement, the cunning Tiegan and silver-tongued Ulara eventually found they worked quite well together, and would prove to become a powerful political force in Tethyr. A series of well-timed trade ventures and political maneuvering by the two helped House Vindicus to grow considerably in wealth, land, and status; culminating in Tiegan's appointment to the Tethyrian Queen's Royal Privy Council.

For Theanor, this meant both the privilege of growing up in the lap of luxury, and the knowledge he would one day have some very big shoes to fill. To the latter end, his parents hired the finest instructors in the land to teach their son, and Theanor was well schooled in everything from oration and history to dueling. Theanor performed well in his studies, but over their course developed quite a zeal for the stories of great heroes from ages past, and longed to one day follow in their footsteps fighting against the forces of evil in defense of the innocent. In addition to his academic studies, Theanor also followed in his family's devotion to the god Torm, and befriended the local Priest. Though Theanor grew older, his zeal to serve never died down, and he sought council on what he should do from his Priest friend. Believing his zeal to be from the gods, the Priest suggested that Theanor swear the Oath of Devotion, and walk the path of a Paladin.

Feeling such was his calling, Theanor gladly agreed, and though his parents at first opposed the notion, the Priest helped convince them it was for the best (a task made easier by the need to improve the family's reputation after an unfortunately incident at a recent soiree involving Tiegan, a nobleman he quite disliked, and far too much wine) though it was agree Theanor would retain his titles and return to lead the House after Tiegan died. With the matter decided, Theanor took the Oath and spent the next few years training in the way of the Paladin. Now, having finished his training, Theanor has set off for the first time into the world, where after a good deal of exploring and taking small contracts and requests to help others, he made his way to the Crags and has taken on a contract to help protect a merchant caravan carrying some unusually secretive cargo...

This looks good, accepted. Only issue is that it looks like you are missing spells unless you've got them written somewhere else.

At 1st level you start with six 1st level spells in your spellbook. These are all the spells you know besides your cantrips, which are fixed in your mind.

I'm gonna quote DnD Beyond on this next part:

"You prepare the list of wizard spells that are available for you to cast. To do so, choose a number of wizard spells from your spellbook equal to your Intelligence modifier + your wizard level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.

For example, if you’re a 3rd-level wizard, you have four 1st-level and two 2nd-level spell slots. With an Intelligence of 16, your list of prepared spells can include six spells of 1st or 2nd level, in any combination, chosen from your spellbook. If you prepare the 1st-level spell magic missile, you can cast it using a 1st-level or a 2nd-level slot. Casting the spell doesn’t remove it from your list of prepared spells.
"

If you have any questions let me know.

Alright so we still have one person possibly making a character, gonna give them a chance to finish before I close applications. We've got an interesting party so far.

I've added the roster to the OP, we've got a Wizard, Paladin, and Barbarian.

We have a potential sorcerer or cleric in the works.

In regards to new applications, it is first come first serve as far as classes go unless I deny your character, which will really only happen if you don't want to put in the effort required to make it correctly.

Ok, I misunderstood and thought I was only allowed three. But I see now there's room to add more spells in the "edit" section. I'll look into it after dinner.
