TO: Representative Dan Ziegler

Hello my friend,

I was wondering if you would be open to a chat about upcoming legislation and our legislative priorities.

I'll bring the wine!

Donal Jonsson
U.S. Representative of Maine's 1st Congressional District
Ranking Member of the House Agriculture Committee

Daniel Aharon Ziegler's priorities had been somewhat thrown out of whack recently. Calls from Japan had picked up in intensity, and the energy required to deal with the spawn he had unfortunately left behind so many years ago was quickly becoming more than he was willing to devote to the subject. Yuuko had been smart enough in the past not to ask for too much, Ziegler reminisced as he tossed a small ball back and forth in his similarly small hands, and now she was overstepping her bounds. Glancing around his office, empty save for the soft hum of progressive rock and stacks of papers related to the ARA, Ziegler decided it was time to shift tactics. Pressing a small button underneath his desk and waiting a few moments, his favorite staffer, Will Plaxx, entered his office.

"Sir?"

"Will, I need you to block my daughter's number on the office phones, Colorado and DC. I can't afford to be thinking about her nonsense right now, I already have to deal with being across the hall from that stupid hillbilly, among other things. Oh and tell that bitch Sarah that she's fired, I don't appreciate the little snarky notes she put in that rundown I got yesterday, the last thing we want is our staff getting too familiar." he said, adding an intentioned wink at that last comment that made the much younger man grin. "Of course Congressman, that's the last thing we want. I'll tell her to pack her bags. Oh, I was meant to inform you about an email, Representative Jonsson wants to meet with you concerning some pet legislation of his."

Ziegler cleared his throat and moved behind his desk, opening his laptop and quickly finding the email in question. "Oh, right, that Jonsson. So many Johnsons these days its hard to keep track. Anyways," Ziegler was about to continue when he had a better idea. "Oh, Will you weren't busy were you? Ah, if you were you're not anymore, my orders, lets go pay Donal a personal visit, I'm sure he can make time for us on short notice, don't you think?"

Will just shrugged. "I don't see why not."

"Very good." Ziegler grabbed his coat and stepped into the hallway, noticing it was rather empty for this time of day, save a few people far down the hall. His eyes caught on the office directly across from his, this particular member being moved in this cycle after some kind of complaint was filed by her former congressional neighbor. Ziegler's notice stuck on the confederate flag pin firmly attached to the door and the name plate adjacent to it.

Representative Maxine Durant
Mississippi

What an ugly display, one not befitting someone elected to represent the people in these halls. Ziegler scowled and began to walk past it, before something in his mind he couldn't quite place held him back. He stopped and turned back to it, staring at it for a few moments.

"Something the matter Sir?"

"Tear that thing off the door Will."

"I'm sorry Sir?"

"Rip it off the door, I don't want to see that every time I come out of my office."

The staffer hesitated before slowly moving towards the door. He paused for a moment, before moving his hand up and removing the item from its place. He turned it over in his hands for a moment.

"Put it in my office, we'll throw it out with the rest of the trash later."

Will briefly disappeared into the office, returning empty handed and beginning the walk with Ziegler to Representative Jonsson's office in another building.

Now, when they get out, they have no routine, no order, no money, no support system, and no way to restart without that ten years of knowledge, so instead of trying to get back on their feet, they go back to their old habits, which means more money for prisons. We need to figure out a way to stop repeat offenders from repeating and go back on a righteous path."

It’s going to be incredibly difficult though, enough people in our party think I’m a soft moderate… Wolf was a sort of… Nixon going to China on that front… in general I’ve been tossing around the idea of drastically increasing sentences for violent criminals and resources devoted to fighting them in the same bill as the reforms we are discussing. Capitol Hill
Office of Representative Maxine Durant (Mississippi's 3rd Congressional District)

Chief of Staff Sylvester Norrington cheerfully whistled to himself as the pair of footsteps continued to reverberate in the congressional hallway. He mused about, trying to make sure the woman that he worked for was up to date with all the new bills being submitted into the ledger. Although the Equality Act had been on the Congressional books for a couple hours now, the Mississippians office was a little behind schedule. Considering that a quarter of the Representative's access to the outside world came from those elderly things your grandparents used to hit misbehaving animals with, Norrington swalowed what little dignity he had left. Maxine was a woman who blended the best parts of the confederacy with... her personality. She had even been thinking of having black pastors pass out little pins with the flag of the Confederate States of America on them. Norrington thankfully never bothered to pass that memo on to the other staffers on Capitol Hill, lest he have to deal with the flood of angry letters from families throughout the country in the ensuing shit-storm.

He took a small sip of his black morning happy brain juice before gasping as it went down the wrong pipe. "Fuckin 'ell mate!" he hissed before noticing something was missing. The small, Ten by Eight Confederate Flag, proudly manufactured in her home state (and even her home town even) of Mississippi had vanished. He didn't bother to look for it, as there was a habitual procedure that already went through his brain. He had done this a lot, especially with the BLM protests around her office. He even had to pay out of his own pocket at least three hundred dollars worth of additional confederate merchandise when some protestors noticed the door was unlocked and trashed her offices.

He quietly unlocked the door to Representative Durant's office and rummaged through a side drawer by her desk. Inside of it was a bunch of proudly American made... symbols of the confederacy. These ranged from the simple 1861 original confederate flag to a bunch of smaller more redneck style 'stars and saltire' battle flags that had been on the Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War. Finding a more glossy shine to the plastic of the Confederate symbol, he flashed a small grin before emerging from Representative Durant's office with it and a nail gun. With one hand holding the symbol of southern heritage and the other a piece of construction equipment proudly made in Michigan, one of the states of the Union during the Civil War, Norrington steadied his grip and fired the nail gun at least a dozen times, sticking the Confederate Flag firmly bellow the name plate:

With that, Norrington felt even better once fixing that. If Durant had found out that some-one had 'again' touched her precious symbol of heritage (not hate), then he'd have an earful by the fowl mouthed female Mississippian politician. A slight chuckle came by as he had a sneaking suspicion as to who had removed it in the first place, but wasn't willing to say anything out loud. Before he relocked Durant's office doors, he stuck a small note on the door of Representative Ziegler.

Dan

-Nice Try, why don't you leftists debate the flag instead of tearing it down each time it "offends" you?

I can do this all year buddy.

Always yours,

Max.

The Capital Grille, Washington D.C

As the waiter hurried away, Donal decided to continue the conversation.

"It's Volker. He's a weak leader and a weak speaker, he'll bend to the party." Donal said frankly. "Have you ever considered a role in leadership Maxine? I think you'd be in a position of power. First woman leader of the Republicans, the establishment would be shook! Could you picture the face on our fearless president?" Donal laughed.

Donal took a drink of some water before continuing, talking made his mouth dry out.

"Well apart from the meat bill, I was wondering if you'd like to potentially sponsor some legislation. Now it probably won't make that much difference to the people of Mississippi, it's mainly focused on foreign policy. Taking on Turkey, condemning the Armenian Genocide federally. Most states have already condemned it, but there's one that hasn't. So I think we need to send a message to Turkey that this can't slide and that America Remembers."

Donal paused.

"Or if you don't want to get involved in foreign policy, I've got another bill-, understand it's in very early stages about ending the kill shelters. Kill shelters, that kill the poor puppies that are homeless." A single tear formed in Donal's eye even thinking of the poor puppies. "Yeah, it would restrict the federal funding that could be given to these shelters if they keep killing the baby dogs. Utterly horrible stuff that dog killing is really. Makes me sick to the stomach. But it's up to you what you want to be involved in."

Jonsson's Office, The Capitol Complex
Image

Some faint smoke filled Jonsson's office as he hurriedly put out the candles that he had set up an hour before for his meeting with Dan. He had been informed by his secretary that Dan had brought someone with him, so he had to rework things. Running over to turn the lights back on, he tripped over a leg of a chair, knocking it and himself over. Clambering back up, he turned on the lights and put away the candles. He finished by putting his tie back on.

"Dan!" Jonsson said as he opened the door to his office, welcoming the man in.

"Please come on in and have a seat, and excuse the mess, we've just got this new office here, smaller than the last one."

He leaned in to the group that had gathered in the office lobby.

"If only that bitch Simmone had've given me an office on the actual hill." He cracked a smile before taking a seat at his desk.

"I'm sure it was nothing personal Donal, you are a very valued member of the caucus, I don't know what we would do without you." Dan said, his eyes lighting up as he faintly smelled warm vanilla, as if someone had put out scented candles shortly before his arrival. Warm vanilla was his favorite smell, and he considered that it must be some sort of coincidence.

"I got your email, it seems that we have much to discuss? I suppose you have some legislation you want to talk over?" Ziegler took a seat as Will Plaxx took the one beside him. "Oh Donal, I forgot to introduce you to Will, he is one of my senior aides." he said with a wink.

Will reached out to shake Donal's hand. "Pleasure to meet you Congressman."

Email To: Phillip Crawford
Email From: John Mattox
Re: 2022 Midterms
Mr. Crawford:
I'd like to inform you early that I will not be running for re-election in 2022. I have not announced this to the press and have no intention of doing so at this time. I am willing and able to help recruit a sensible Democrat to run for my seat in the midterms. I understand that my seat is safe, but I would rather help search for a fine replacement than watch an unqualified, uneducated, dissatisfying candidate seek my office.
Sincerely,
Congressman John Mattox III

Mattox selected the Save Draft option in his email, unsure of when (or if) to send it. He had almost sent it in 2020 but decided against it. Mattox was aging, though, and there still wasn't a cure for that. Opening a new tab, he turned to Twitter, pondering what else could've possibly happened since he went on a pun rampage earlier in the day.

"Oh, good, my name's on that," Mattox mumbled to himself. Perfect thing to campaign on--
No. No campaigning. You're old, John. Too old.
(Fake Thurmond) was 101.
He was also a segregationist. Don't compare yourself to (Thurmond).
Fine. Byrd?
Also no.
Bah, forget it. They were old farts. You're an old fart. When you leave, you'll still be an old fart. Besides, this way you can still keep up with politics without looking like an old fart to constituents.
...shut up.

Before he could continue to argue with himself, a knock sounded at the door.
"John, may I come in?"
"Hmm? Yes, Helen, come in, come in."
An Asian-American woman in her sixties turned the knob and walked through the door. "Ms. Simone has submitted the NFC to the docket," she said. "Also... you've been a bit inactive on the floor lately, and I was wondering if there was something wrong."
"I saw it on her Twitter just a few minutes ago. And, no, not at all. I've been meaning to get out onto the floor lately, it just never feels like it's the right time. Sometimes a few lines of text on Twitter moves more souls than a two-minute speech in the House."
"I know, I know," Helen replied. "But it'd be good for your fellow Democrats to remember that you exist. You can't stay in your office all the time."
"I don't," he said. "I spend more than enough time staying in my head."
Helen smiled and shook her head. "Get out of the office tonight. Go out to eat. See a movie. Go to a bar. I'm sure something fun'll happen."
"I'll think about it."
"You do that."

Louisianan wrote:"I want you to be the infrastructure king, Mr. President." Hypolite said chuckling, "Louisiana is a poor state, and the rural parts of our state have fought with the effects of hurricanes, the effects of farming machinery, and more for years and we just can't handle it. We need a good, solid package that will not help us survive but will help us thrive."

"The roads, the bridges, the levees, canals, coulees, they can't take it anymore. We need more money for infrastructure, we need an infrastructure package that will help rural states like Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and company. Not only would a bill like that help infrastructure, but it would also help the economy. Put more people in the workforce and I just know we'll get back from this blasted crisis. I generally don't believe in federal intervention in state matters, but with desperate circumstances come desperate measures, or however that saying goes."

"Do you have a top line or a bottom line number? How much are you willing to spend?"

"I don't have any numbers right off the top of my head, but I know (Not-Tanner Magee) of the Louisiana House is working on a bill to increase the state's budget for infrastructure and from what I do know, Mr. President, we spend upwards of $250 million dollars per year to help our roads and bridges and such."

"We are probably like 45 or 46 in the country when it comes to infrastructure, and if we were able to spend more, we could be on our damn way to brighter days. Before I let you know my price tag, I'd like to speak with experts on the matter, I'm no infrastructure expert and I don't claim to be one, so I don't want to throw out any numbers that'll look like I'm trying to make my wet dream come true" Hypolite laughed,

"Firstly its on Afghanistan... As of now i'm looking to continue the withdraw started by Wolf and Tawney... But I am concerned about our ability to process visas quickly enough for those who we have made commitments to... I was hoping i'd have your support when it comes to accelerating Afghan visas and focusing on them."

"Now," Hypolite sighed, "this is some tough beans. I sympathize with them folks but I don't support accelerating anything. 'Wisely and slow; they stumble that run fast.' is something my grandson told me, surprised the hell out of me, but it makes sense. If you accelerate visas, you speed through background checks, you speed through searches, and the like which may put our country at risk."

"If we pull out too quickly, mistakes will be made, no doubt about it. We need to take our time and make sure America's interests come first. Sure, I make commitments everyday, I know the importance of sticking to them, but we are going to see havoc over there if we put commitments over public safety, law and order, and a pre-made plan."

"If I may also say," Hypolite quickly adds, "Our American folks over there should have top priority, no matter what."

“Of course Senator, Americans will come first…. The other question I have has to do with China. Many people who’s opinion I respect, and who economic expertise is well known, have indicated to me that the single best way to solve our economic crisis is to make peace with China on the Trade front. Reducing tariffs to 2020 levels… what is your opinion on that potential course of action?”

We give states jurisdiction over many matters of public safety, including crime, drug policy, and more.

It’s plain stupid to think that states can’t manage their own meat inspection programs, especially when the USDA still maintains its standards through periodic, risk-based inspection.

Congress should trust Americans and the states they live in to make informed decisions regarding locally-grown meat. #MARKETAct

"My opinion is relatively unimportant." Hypolite shook his head, "I've heard theories that the economic success of the first two years of Wolf's presidency may, in part, have been the leftovers from the Baharia administration, which would mean that Wolf's policies have carried over and caused us to be in such economic decline now. I have no clue if that is true or not and is up for political debate but my personal opinion is that you should listen to your people and come up with a plan for us to act on."

"I've always felt that a shoemaker shouldn't teach elocution unless he knew more about elocution than shoemaking. I don't feel like it's my place to legislate on things that I'm not confident in my own ability to successfully legislate in." he added
