Characters: President Richardson, Senator Deb Freyer, CoS Bob Abernathy
Players: Dentali, Sarenium,
Location: White House, Washington DC
Date: January 24th, 2021

Bob had scheduled this one in the afternoon rather deliberately, when he greeted Deborah he did so as a colleague and equal, though gave her subtle deference in recognition of the one thing he valued, some weird quirk of lengthy experience. The two met at the door and Bob led her into the Roosevelt Room where she was to wait for the President, four journalists walked past by deliberate machination, documenting that Deborah Feyrer was in the White House, supposedly those images would mollify the right wing. Eventually, she would be led into the Oval Office itself where Bob announced her half informally, “Senator Deb Feyrer,” he opened the door, “Mr. President,” he greeted as the taller woman approached the President.

She looked down on him, not figuratively, quite literally, but was not shy and came comfortably close, not beyond her social bounds, but enough so that she was towering over him and extended her hand, “Mister President,” she greeted.

“Senator Freyer I don’t believe we’ve ever had the pleasure of a one on one conversation, just odd meetings at functions and parties.” Richardson said, shaking the Senator’s hand “I hope this is the first of many meetings.”

“Of many meetings with Senators,” she mused, “or Alabamians.”

Richardson’s southern accent was mild but noticeable “Lets just say i’ll always give Southerners a bit more time… I’ve actually been to Tuscaloosa quite a bit to watch the Crimson Tide play. They consistently slaughter Duke so I’m a bit bitter about that.” he chuckled

“Well, the deeper in the south, the better the Southerner,” she replied in her thick Alabama accent. Bob was aware of what she was waiting for.

“Shall we take our seats?” Bob gestured to the couches.
Deborah waited for the President’s lead. Richardson nodded and sat down

“I’m a big fan of your Endless Frontier Act, I know I said as much publicly but I want to reiterate it.” Richardson was earnest and in a fairly good mood.

“I’d normally be more hesitant to spend federal dollars given the shape of our budget, but China’s behaviour this past year has been despicable, we best not be planning to budge an inch,” she directed her remark at both Bob and the President, “this bill is a big part of how we confront them.”

“I don’t need to tell you this… I don't want to say New Cold War, but we are almost there… this conflict has dozens of prongs… Your bill and the infrastructure bill are going to catch us up to them in a lot of sectors where we were caught sleeping over the years…” Richardson took a more serious tone

“We still have problems… and some people I respect are pushing me to have a bit more of a reconciliatory approach with them, mainly due to the ongoing trade conflict… But frankly I…”

“I’ll interrupt you right there, Mr. President,” Deb’s voice indicate restraint, though she did not pull her punches, “how you handle China is ultimately at your discretion, and whatever I say will not change that,” she acknowledged her own influence in this White House, “but this bill should be your first priority. Before any crap Democratic bill, and before that whopper of a spend you’ve got coming out of the House, because it sends the right message. That Congress and the White House, across the aisle and including both parties, will not pull their punches in catching up and going beyond China’s supposed capacity.”

Nate gave a respectful nod not happy at the interruption but willing to allow it for the sake of building a relationship

“It is at my discretion but I would be a fool to not heed your advice,” Richardson gave a small smile “Mr Abernathy has indicated we can get your bill done quickly, and while I do have some concerns regarding directing the funding I tend to agree. Your bill has my full support and backing as a priority. As long as it doesn’t delay the initial economic relief bill.”

“It won’t,” she smiled, leaning in, “if you throw your support behind it’s immediate passage this week. The libs are suffocating the Senate in their blue state bailout bill, I’ll filibuster it if it comes up before my bill.”

Now it was Richardson’s turn to interrupt “Senator I don't want to see that bill pass either at the same time I don’t want to see them looking for revenge and taking it out on Frontier. Do it if you have to but if you can avoid such measures I would ask you to try.”

Bob glanced at Nate, recalling some vague promise to sign the bill if it passed while Deb continued her spiel, “if the Democrats want to pass their commie load of trash before the bill to fight commie loads of trash, I would hope you’d publicly call them out on it, Mr. President.”

“Unfortunately while the Democrats have the Senate Majority I will have to be a bit more… delicate about things. Senate Majority Leader Hertzog indicated taking a hard line on BUILD would be justification for them jamming up the works. So it will require a bit more… subtlety to handle” For the first time in the conversation Richardson showed some frustration “I do however think that the broad nature of the Democratic Party can be played against this bill however.” Richardson nodded at Bob

“Bob in your estimation would BUILD pass if it got voted on today?”

“There aren’t sixty votes to break the Senator’s filibuster,” Bob acknowledged, “but there are Republican votes for it until such time as the whip is cracked,” he vaguely alluded to his own skills.

Richardson gave the CoS a look indiciatinghe wished to discuss that a bit more later

“If you make clear how hopeless it is,” Deb looked at the President, “a man as old as Obradovic will pull it until the numbers stack up for them.”

Richardson considered this momentarily, “I’ll be candid with you, I don’t have as good an estimation of the man as I’d like yet…. So I can’t comment on it either way. Regardless, I will try that tact and should I fail then we can have one of the Republicans give it a poison pill or refer it to the committee.”

“Well,” Deb responded, “if that is your desire, Mr. President.”
Her tone indicated that it was something she took particularly seriously.

Richardson took a beat and shifted to a mildly more intense posture “At the end of the day we are going to sink the bill… That I promise you.”

“Let’s hope so,” she smiled, “for yours and the party’s sake,” she raised her hand in preparation to farewell.

“Before you go Diane I wanted to discuss a few other items with you? I promise not to take up too much of your time…” Richardson said almost apologetically

Deborah’s face didn’t drop so much as she pursed her lips, “I’ll fetch the New Englander for that if you’d like.”

“Sorry I need to call her directly after this meeting… Truly I apologize…” Richardson’s sincerity was evident

“What I wanted to ask about was trade… The current economic crisis isn’t going to just be solved by boosting infrastructure or domestic capacity… even if it was…”

“Mr. President,” she stopped him once again, “my ability to support any trade deal depends on the details. Deals that put America first, I’ll back.”

“Senator, I was hoping you could be a bit more specific on what that means to you?” He continued “That means many different things to different people… Specifically I want to build up in the IndoPacific, I would appreciate any recommendations you had.”

Deb appeared somewhat amused, though she did not show anything else, “don’t sell us out,” she declared vaguely.

Richardson’s brow furrowed for just a moment at the woman who supposedly led foreign policy in the Senate for his party before deciding to drop it.

Richardson looked to Bob and back at Deb looking to change the track of the conversation “The other items I wanted to discuss were investing in the Defense of the Indo Pacific. I spoke with Senator Colbert yesterday and he volunteered to take point on some of it… I recommend contacting you on it for support… Finally I wanted to gauge where you were on Infrastructure?”

Deb, who by now was becoming increasingly tired of this conversation and sensed the President wanted to barter for her support much further down the track, stood as she spoke, “as with everything, Mr. President, my views are conditional on the details. I’m all for a stronger Pacific, but I won’t back it if it costs good Americans their jobs,” she said politely.

“I’m not asking for support here Senator” Richardson clarified “I am asking for advice on a path forward.”

She studied him for a moment, god was he short, “Mr. President, my advice is to pass Endless Frontier and get these tariffs dropped, without selling the house in the process. I struggle to see how our donors will accept entry into a deal with the far east without the protections that had been negotiated by us four years ago and are no longer in it because we pulled out and the others didn’t care,” she dropped her perspective, very barely, unconvinced of the worthwhileness of this Presidency, “Mr. President, if you’ll excuse me, there are hearings all afternoon and I must get a bill onto your desk, at this stage without your complete support.”

“Senator, allow me to be absolutely clear and candid” Richardson said, not quite understanding where she got the idea she didn’t have his support, “I support the bill fully, I will say so publicly as I did during the campaign… I will push for it… and I WILL clear any bill out of the way that needs cleared I just need to consult with Mr. Abernathy here about the most effective way to do that.’’

“Mr. President,” she sighed, “you said minutes ago you don’t want the Democrats to be angered by a hardline stance, you indicate you want conciliation with confrontation, that we don’t want some new cold war, but support passing a bill that affirms there is a cold war,” she said coldly, “I don’t know what you want, to be completely frank with you, sir. While you and, Mr. Abernathy sort out exactly what you want, and what stand you will take, I shall do what I do best and stop a Democratic strong-arming of the Senate.”

She paused before continuing, “I hope to see you sledge them for choosing their bailout over this necessary bill, but I’ve seen no indication that this is something you’ll do, I’ve seen every indication that the cultural elite from out of this world who’s got his head in the clouds can come into this room and you are prepared to tiptoe around him.”

“Understood,” Richardson said standing up “Well I hope that I can prove to you exactly what I stand for and earn your trust.” He extended a hand to shake

Deb shook his hand, “I don’t often trust men from Florida who cheer for a North Carolinian team,” she gave one slight smile, “but let’s hope so.”

With that, she left, the door swinging closed behind her and Bob sighing, “that went better than I thought it would.”

“Was I out of line saying I wanted to try and be a bit more subtle before calling for blood?” Richardson said a bit exasperated

“I wouldn’t worry about it,” Bob shook his head, “her opinion will always be that you’re budging on too much, too much of the time. In my experience, she dislikes discussing anything that catches her by surprise. Any other Senator would be flattered to be asked their view on your foreign policy, but she sees that as an ambush or insincere inquiries. When I worked for Moe,” he mentioned his late old boss with a faint smile, “we foreshadowed whatever we wanted to discuss with her staff, and if she requested the meeting, we avoided anything that she didn’t bring up herself. It kept her happy in the room and cool headed. She’s a good attack dog when she’s on your side.”

“Bob..” Richardson said awkwardly trying the man’s first name out for the first time “I worry about her more than the Progs or most of the Dems… I don’t know where she stands on a dozen issues especially with foreign policy and she is supposedly our leading expert in the Senate… How the hell did she think I wouldn’t ask about it? I can’t formulate a foreign policy platform to put to the Senate without knowing where she stands because I’m damn sure she has no problem undermining my position. And that is one area where her objection would carry incredible weight.”

“If she doesn’t clarify her positions and work with me I can’t move forward on basically anything outside our borders. She is not someone I can ignore or work around.”

“She doesn’t know you and judging by her rant at the end three, she doesn’t know where you stand either,” Bob paused, “we can formulate our foreign policy with the input of your cabinet, some four thousand people work under your seal, consult her and Congress when absolutely needed but they will accept your actions. Beg for forgiveness not permission.”

“So youre saying I need to do that without the input of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee head? Of my own party? She wouldn’t WANT input on that?”

“No sir,” Bob paused, “she’d happily give you input, but bringing up her view on trade deals and pacific defence in a meeting we’d indicated would be mostly to do with Endless Frontier and Senate business gave her, and admittedly myself, the impression that you were attempting to barter your support in exchange for hers. In future, my advice is to stay to the agenda or at least give her office the heads up she needs to come to a meeting prepared. When she’s warned, she will engage,” he vaguely recalled her monologous rants about American decline as he said his piece.

“Fine” Richardson said, annoyed and letting silence linger for a few moments “Miscommunication happens… Regardless, we need to get our Foreign policy team up and running, Eliza to South Korea… What's the status on the Secretary of State?”

“Whenever you pick a replacement to not-Scott Brown,” Bob extracted a manila folder with the shortlist, “we’ll have Bryan pile pressure for a quick confirmation.”

“Alright someone a bit less moderate this time… One last thing… What’s your take on BUILD?”

Max hummed an old tune under his breath, staring out the window. After a long moment, he spoke.

"Obviously, I'm disappointed with the number, but one and half and change is workable. I'm sure I can appeal to Rogers, maybe even Vichter, to see what we can and can't trade. I'd like to try to get it down to one and a half. But I'm impressed with what you've talked them.down to."

He fixed Nate with a gimlet look. "And I'm sure the American people will be, too. Don't do what Baharia did--take a victory lap. We need you in Wisconsin, before and after this bill passes, touting it. You wrestled the Democrats down to the number you wanted. You're helping people. You need to get out front of this and claim victory before Hertzog does, otherwise we've lost a battle of public opinion."

"I've no major objections to the act," Max continued, running a hand across his leathery chin, "but I'll still meet with Hertzog and Volker"--here he grimaced slightly, as though biting into an apple and finding a grenade--"to hash out specifics, especially with regard to rural spending and County grants. Otherwise, Mr. President, it looks as though you've handled all the wrangling. Is there anything else we need to discuss at the moment? Afghanistan?"

"Senator in my estimation the bill is finished, I have majority support in the house and a deal with the Senate Minority Leader. Frankly if its not offensive then I would rather not try and mess around with it any more... I would ask you just focus on getting it through the Senate as quickly as possible."

Max nodded once, slowly.

"Mister President, do you know what Arnold Wolf's greatest strength was, when it came to negotiating with the Senate Republican Conference?"

Without waiting for an answer he plowed on. "He commanded incredible loyalty among our voter base. A word from Arnold Wolf could change the direction of a GOP primary in the majority of states. Even those who disagreed were generally content to go along to get along--because otherwise they'd be out of a job."

Max paused to cough violently. He then sighed and wiped his lips with his sleeve before continuing. "You are not Arnold Wolf. You do not have that kind of grip over the base. You cannot potentially end a Senators career with a tweet. And you certainly cannot end mine. I respect you, I like you, and I think you were the best choice for our nation and our party. I aim to be the best partner and help I can in governance. But let me be clear: you do not command me. I will decide when my negotiations with my colleagues are done."

Max hauled himself to his feet and shuffled to the door, groaning as his knee twinged. "Have a lovely day, Mr. President. I expect I'll be seeing you later to discuss Afghanistan."

And then the old man took his leave.

Neshoba County, Mississippi
January 25th, 2021

The relative calm of the still chilly, winter air was disturbed. It was unfortunately broken from it's vow of silence for many a hour by the feminine grunt of a jacket clad figure that hurled a string into a sea of wet real estate, eager to make it's purchase known at to meet the neighbors. Unfortunately, there wasn't much of a house-warming party by her friends, so she had to make do with packing everything up in a tearful reeeel before throwing herself head-first at yet another spot. She listened to any possible threats, but all she could hear was the angelic sound that graced her ears known only as:

Sweet, sweet, fuck all.

Like she was really here to fish. Any good southern woman would've known not to just fish, but to hunt as well. Wasn't that what her rack with all sorts of large, black looking weapons that spat fire and smoke from were for? Fish scarin' weapons? So long as it wasn't illegal in her state, she could have all the damn guns she could dream of. It was a good life she had, and the calm winds, the chill in the air, made memories, fond memories of her father come back to her. The times when she would be covered in pumpkin guts, or that one time that she managed to catch a large fish. Those were the special moments that garnered her more appreciation out of life. It made her forget about all the bitter-ness, the twitter feuds with various GOP and Democratic politicians.

Of course, she had her excuses "to go n' has a chats wit them dumbasses y'all call fellers that live inna yer district that can cast one of them ballots fer ya. Not them homosexuals, but the straight, christian fearin' folks inna M'ssippii." But, that's what most of those were, just excuses to get out of the Capitol building. To take in deep breaths and just wait for something to move. Though, internaly, she was scheming, plotting and preparing her next plans and steps. Would she come in akin to a bull-inna-china feller's tee-pee? Why shouldn't she? Taking the advice that Pauline had given her. 'Max, you be Max'.

So that was exactly the kind of "southern, soda-swiggin', tweet-toilin', shotgun-shootin' son of a bitch" that Mississippi had come to love over her many years in Congress. Those facts managed to warm her up even better than that thermos filled with that 'roasty-toasty down your throat' feeling you'd get when consuming a (semi) illegal amount of Coca-Cola and hot chocolate in one setting. One part she was feeling buzzed from the caffine, and the other part she was feeling warm from the pipin' hot liquid. A smile blessed her features to any who would have seen, if there had been another soul for miles out here. All man made stuff around her was the little wooden dock that her feet hung down, almost touching the very, very cold waters of the Lake. She had her hunting rifle off to one side, a fishing poll and her trusty red pick-up truck that sat just a few yards behind her. No frantic tweets, no crazy messages and no damned idiotic constituents bothering her with stupid, STUPID questions like 'what kind of bread should I have when I go to Olive G'rden?'

She drew in a deep breath, feeling the chill of the air invade her lungs like the Mongol hordes that had swept across most of the known world at the time. Finally, she exhaled out, her face returning from a mild, mild shade of violet to the normal frost-nibbled state one would get when not wearing anything more than a light rain coat in 29 degrees Freedomheight, -1.7 degrees Commieceus. She decided to ponder over what Dumbo had really said. She thought back to it. She pried the memories that she had so long ago had locked away. It had only been a couple of days into the 118th Congress, so she must have set a Legislative record for shortest interval between trips to the Whip's office. It only took her first 'objection' and saying something on Twitter. She should do this more often, in fact! No, not the camping/meditation thing, the being a jack-ass on twitter thing. Maybe next time the Whip will give her a lollipop for being a brave girl while being berated. Hell, she might even make Chairwoman of the Agricultural Committee! It's always a possibility, even if it's microscopic in the chance of happening. That's what she naively hoped for anyways.

She had just thought up a zinger before she remembered that she had left her phone at home, on the kitchen table, smack dab inserted right in the middle of a batch of chocolate chip cookie dough she had been preparing with Crisco rather than butter. Shit. Guess she'll have to hope Miles doesn't come downstairs and decide to finish what she had started, or else she'll be plum without a voice in the world...apart from her standing as a sitting member of the U.S Federal Government. Other than that, she's stifled by the mass media terrorists!

"Max, 'member now, y'all didn't g'an n' g'an down-er..rather, up state-wize just t' play on that there tiny baby kow'mp'pew'ter, er whatever in the sam hells the damned commie-nists inna caliee-for-ni-aa are a callin' that smarty farty lil' 'ppl' smart' fha-phonee..Y'all got yer ass on down here t' take a nice ol' break. Don't gonna worry 'bout no 'situtents inna the mornin'. I don't gotta worry 'bout no angry h'whip callin' me inna my office. Hell, I don't even gotta worry 'bout no damned primary challenge t' my seats n' shits likes thats. No-m'am. All y'all just gotta do, is sit yer pasty white ass-cheeks on down here on this 'ere dock n' fish. Fish till y'all git bored."

Eventually, she did end up getting bored of fishing, following the flopping around of at least thirty seven (formerly) alive fish that sprayed the middled-aged Max with their watery 'air'. She sighed and flicked her brown curls that road messily off to one side of her. She eyed the clouds once more. The skies were begining to turn grey. Looking around, the once vibrant wild-life had scampered off, leaving only the more 'unfittest' members of that bullshit evil-lution that lazily farted about on logs and on trees and within the waters of nature. She shivvered as she had polished off the last drops of her hot cocoa, stood up after throwing most of the fish in an ice-box she kept in her trunk (right next to the 'legal' sawed off shotgun, just in case a bear or, god forbid, a lobbyist, approached her in the woods while she was on vacation). Vacation. That wasn't the word she would have Norrington use when pressed by a mob of local journalists the second she had stepped off the plane from D.C to Jackson Airport. More of a "break to listen to the concerns of Mississippians, away from the Perspectives or Solutions on the hill". Ok, her chief-of staff would make that sound a bit more 'rosier' than the other epithet she had cussed out that also started with the letters P, O and S.

Before she closed the lid to the fish, she stared at them. At their cold, stiff frames. She had robbed them of their lives, for what? So she could take a break from whatever in the hell was going on in the other place with stiff cold frames, otherwise known as lobbyists. That thought made her laugh out loud, thankful that the only thing she managed to disturb with her outburst were a family of black birds that took off from the tree-lines upon being startled. She gently shook her head and smiled, unlocking her door, starting up her truck and begining the long, long drive back home to Cedar Grove.

As the minutes turned into miles driven on her poor red ford, a different kind of transformation had been occurring in her stomach. It howled at her, demanding that something be eaten by her. Eventually, the allure of diner made hashbrowns, thin slices of ham and a cold glass of Coca-Cola did have it's appeal, especially to the malnourished female that Maxine assured herself she was. So, a small glance at the road signs on her way back lead to her turning off a side-road near a rather small looking Diner. Not many cars were there, apart from what she well knew as the 'staff's car' and at least one or two patrons still lazily enjoying their food. She locked her trusty red yet again and hobbled up the two side steps to the Diner.

"Hey sugar. I'll be witcha inna moment." The blonde haired gum chewing waitress replied, filling up another guest's mug of coffee before pulling out a menu.

"T'drank?"

"Oh. Uh, I'll have a coke. A coke-coke, not a coke coke. Gots its y'all wimmen?"

The waitress nodded her head and went off to go fetch forth the fountain of carbonation, high fructose corn-syrup and the fanciful green glass with Coca-Cola etched on it's sides. Ok, when she brought it back it certainly felt like plastic rather than glass, but it was the little things in life. It was something cold to drink and she wasn't about to bitch and moan in public. The Restaurant had a single, elderly looking CRT telivison held together on the ceiling by duck tape, some obviously faulty wiring. The state of the television wasn't what had brought a slight smile to her face, it was that it was turned to the 'republican propaganda network', as she so lovingly called FOX NEWS. But, when she read the headline, she was a little miffed and started to wonder if the staff at Fox had more of a lie-beral tilt than they would first admit to in a court of law.

DURANT TO VOTE NO TO RELIEF, IS SHE HEARTLESS?

(Chip LeMay):"Congresswoman Maxine Durant to vote no on relief. While her office hasn't laid out anything concrete, they did release a statement saying he would vote against relief. With me is Former Fire-fighter Harriot James, who ran against Maxine Durant in the republican primary when she first ran for congress in 2014. With the House as closely divided as it is, James, do you think this act of party disloyalty should be tolerated?

(Harriot James): "No I don't Chip n' here's why. When I was a fire-fighter, we followed a book to the T most o' the time, but not all the time. What we need inna congress are team-players, not Republicans in Name Only. Yes, I said RINO. A real Republican would do the smart thing and get relief to the American People."

(LeMay): "So, we know that Durant is a controversial figure. There are some on the left that are calling for her resignation from Congress, saying she's out of touch with her constituents. In fact, in her letter, and we've got the letter right here, she's said: 'leeches on society must be scraped off if the body is to heal'. She's calling those people that are struggling in this economic crisis right now 'leeches'. Families all over this country? Well to her, they're "leeches"! Your response?"

(James): "Absolutely abhorrent. You know, it's sad to see just how much of a Washington insider she's become. Durant doesn't hang around her office, she's hardly meeting with her constituents. The only time I can actively get a hold of her house office is when she's in Cedar Grove. The only time she hires some warm body instead of an answering machine was last year, when she was up for re-election!

All politicians care about in Washington seem to be their next election, even if they don't have a damn thing to show for it! You know, it's sad. I thought, when I first met her, she was a smart, gun tottin' liberal hatin' feller. Now I know she's been transformed into an insider on the beltway. She's out of touch and the people of Mississippi are going to start figuring that out sooner than later. Come November of 2022, the only person filing unemployment will be Maxine Durant."

"Lies...damned lies.." the congresswoman hissed under her breath.
Maxine scoffed at the story. She never thought she'd have to hear the fireman again. It brought her back to when she had first ran for Congress, all those years ago. She cussed to herself as she took another long sip of coca-cola before deciding that she had enough. Apparently being berated on national telivison was enough to lose an appetitive. She went hungry, but at least her thirst was quenched. A five dollar bill was put under the empty coke glass before she got up from her seat and began the long, arduous drive back to her home-town of Cedar Grove.

"Senator? You haven't indicated any issues with the bill, I have every intention on letting you take the lead here. I just wanted to know what negotiations you still felt needed to be done so we are on the same page and can be actual partners and not just talking past one another." Richardson stood along with him "With all due respect before you leave let me impress that I did not seek to order you around at all, it has never been and will never be my intention."

"What I wanted more than anything is clarification on what more you believe needs to be done to accomplish the passage of the legislation when the leadership of both parties have agreed on it?"

Max stopped and faced Richardson again, sweeping him with a narrow gaze. He folds like a wet paper towel as soon as he's stood up to.

Then, the old man sighed and leaned against the wall, smacking his lips.

"Well," he said, "I'd like to see more money being shifted to rural broadband, grants to county government--especially in rural counties--and subsidies for industries hit hardest by this crisis. Maybe some pork for National Parks. But I'm going to try and get Hertzog down to one and a half myself. Then I've gotta make sure the one hundred assholes in the Senate can wait to get their pound of flesh so we can get this bill out fast. In terms of...raw data, we've got the votes to pass the bill. But it's my job to ensure nobody gets a bee in their urethra and tries to get attention on C-SPAN by acting a fool."

"We have a infrastructure package coming that is going to cover a lot of that" Richardson countered, trying to get a clear read on why the Senate Minority Leader would risk something like this "I mean... it doesn't need any more pork, and broadband is a top priority for Infrastructure, and we have hundreds of billions for health services, and hundreds of billions more for small businesses already in the bill. If you think another industry needs support lets get out a separate relief bill."

"Your job is to keep people together certainly but we have a strong majority happy with the bill and editing it at this point risks making people mad at going back on agreements we already had with them."

Once the fighting season ends however, the Afghan government would then be able to send the ANA and other security forces back into the countryside to reassert the government’s authority as well as engaging in counter-insurgency strategies when the Taliban is at its weakest point in the year.”

Representative Oliver Miller
[Democratic - 3rd District of Kansas]
Olathe, Kansas - January 26th, 2021

Oliver was always nervous with roundtables. Ever since he had been a city councilman, members of the public always had the possibility of throwing you off of your game. Being a Member of Congress gave one, intentionally or otherwise, for good or for ill, a degree of separation from the public that might rave about a conspiracy theory one minute and then make a salient point the next. But as nervous as they made him, as unpredictable as they could be, Oliver never shirked from them. Not as a candidate, not as a councilman, and certainly not as the Representative for the 3rd Congressional District of the Sunflower State. He had come back from DC to attend a Johnson County roundtable on the recession and what could be done to mitigate its effects until the passage of federal recovery legislation. Johnson County in particular was hit surprisingly hard, with since some of the largest employers in the county were from the ailing health insurance industry. The lack of support from the Wolf and Tawney Administrations was what primarily mobilized these middle class voters to vote for Diehl and Miller in 2020, as well as down ballot Democrats who wanted to see more spending to help Kansans get back on their feet. Not that it mattered much when it came down to who sat in the White House.

The White House. Richardson's Deputy CoS, a nice enough woman, had reached out to his office the day before to ask about setting up a meeting to discuss expedited visas for Afghans. It was actually going to be his first meeting in the White House - the Wolf and Tawney Administrations weren't particularly fond of him - and he admitted that he was curious to get a feel of this Administration personally. He advised the White House that he would be back in DC that evening, and he would be able to meet the morning of the 27th while House business was still light, the Administration's availability permitting, of course. Midwest nice, be Midwest nice, he repeated to himself - give them a smile, a warm voice, but be ready.

As Miller sat with local leaders from Overland Park, Lenexa, Olathe, and Kansas City-Kansas in the Johnson County Administration Building to field a conversation about the recession and recovery efforts, he patiently waited for his turn to speak as local leaders reiterated once again the urgent need for funding to address recession-related issues, such as unemployment and homelessness, to more structural issues, such as education, welfare, and development. Finally, it was his turn to address the room. "Thank you, everyone. I wish some of my colleagues in Washington could be here to see how this recession has hit Kansans hard. And while we should address the struggles of our middle class families in the light of this recession, many of whom recently worked in the health insurance industry, we cannot forget to support the poor and working class Kansans who are also suffering the compounded issues brought about by the weight of the recession. That's why congressional Democrats have been pushing for an expansive federal recovery effort that will bring short-term and long-term benefits and investments to all Americans, both within the introduced American Relief Act and other legislation, such as the BUILD Act and Modern Minimum Wage Act in the Senate and my Helping Communities Invest in Infrastructure Act in the House.

"Our hope is that the Richardson Administration will see the need for bold investments in the recovery, as well as the need to address systemic issues that have affected our communities for far too long. But we can't do this alone. The Republican controlled state legislature insists that we should continue business as usual: cut spending, cut spending, and cut spending until our fair state becomes a shell of itself for the vultures to pick at. What we need now more than ever are investments in schools, healthcare and Medicaid expansion, a robust safety net for those suffering from unemployment and homelessness, infrastructure, and public sector workers like firefighters, teachers, EMTs, police officers, and more. Our economy is suffering, and the answer is not austerity for the sake of an ideological experiment, one that has gone so far that our own state Supreme Court had to force the legislature to spend more in education. We need investment, and we need to help our neighbors out. We cannot do that if we cut ourselves broke. The growth we have seen in Johnson County and Wyandotte County in particular are despite these inhibitions, not because of them. So, yes, please urge your Members of Congress and the Richardson Administration to invest in our country, our communities, and our recovery, but also urge your state legislators to give Governor NotLauraKelly the tools they need to spur a booming recovery in our state."

The roundtable continued with a Q&A, with most of the attendees asking mundane questions or asking relatively softball questions from the panel - it was the heart of a Democratic stronghold, after all - but one attendee, a seemingly middle aged man approached the mic next, turning to Representative Miller. Fuck, don't pick me, don't pick me, don't pick me-, Miller prayed silently. God seemed to have a sense of humor or indifference that day. "I heard that you Democrats just want to give money to New York City and other blue cities, while us real Americans will get squat. I think that you're a grubby little thief, and your whole party is just full of rats. Wolf was right about all of you!" The man's diatribe descended into a tomato-red face and spit flying at the microphone, and Oliver tried very hard not to sigh once he was done - the asshole even had the audacity of turning to leave before he could respond! Clearing his throat and adjusting his tie, Oliver began to speak into his own mic. "Well, I'm happy to see that someone is passionate about the recovery just as much as I am. Now, I can't speak entirely about the American Recovery Act, since negotiations are ongoing in Congress, but the bill that was introduced to the House includes funding for urban, suburban, and rural communities around the country, and I can guarantee that there aren't Democratic plans to pigeon hole funding only for New York City or San Francisco or whatever our...departing friend believes. And of course, the BUILD Act and the Helping Communities Invest in Infrastructure Act would bring much needed relief to the American people, including in rural areas, with regards to housing and infrastructure. Additionally, my Medicaid Saves Lives Act would ensure that all Kansans would be able to take advantage of the benefits of Medicaid expansion, even if our Republican colleagues in the state legislature are too cowardly to help their own constituents."

After the roundtable, Miller would visit the recently constructed county courthouse, take questions from local media outlets about his hopes for the recovery bill, and a little catching up with his parents before his flight out of MCI back to the District. He wasn't sure if his response to the raving man was adequate, but it made him feel better, at least. Besides, he had more important things to concern himself with.

A large scale stimulus response is necessary from the federal government to see off not just the deterioration of the economic situation, but lay groundwork for growth and improvement. Failure to deliver on that would not just be negligent, but practically sabotage. - (1/2)

One of Gene's younger staffers would admit the Minority Leader into the annex of the office, and it would be deeper within where he'd find Gene, who was handling a decanter of Kentucky bourbon and pouring it over ice into two glasses, the elderly man smiiling at his colleague from the other side of the aisle.

Representative Caroline Simone
Wisconsin
Saturday 30th January, 2021

With an ample supply of funding for the political operations she oversaw, and the broader Democratic machine, brought in by her fundraiser the previous week, the former Speaker sought to hit the ground running. Yes, they didn't have a candidate yet in Wisconsin, something that was in no small measure deeply frustrating - there wasn't even an emergent obvious pick yet - but voter registration was something she could at least press on with. Mobilizing voters, especially black voters who'd been disenfranchized by statewide Republicans, was a necessity for ensuring that the Democratic cause wasn't forsaken there. It had been a narrow, bitter debacle in last year's presidential election. This was, perhaps, the only opportunity they had to ensure that the next two years weren't a total Republican washout - the last thing she wanted was to see the federal bench being filled with more bitter, misogynist racists, nor did she want to see the Senate agenda in the hands of Max O'Halleran, whose opposition to the BUILD Act was a dire portent for any sort of positive agenda.

To Milwaukee she went, coordinating between her own campaign apparatus, national and statewide Democrats, and local Get Out The Vote groups to try to build an effective strategy for making sure that that 40% of Milwaukeeans who were black were going to have their voices heard. This time, at least. It was a vulgar spectacle, every time it happened, thousands of voters stripped from voter rolls. She wondered, at times, whether it'd be possible to overcome that terrible authoritarianism that so gripped the Republican movement. Even with the soft-spoken Richardson at the helm, there was seemingly no stop in the surge to dismantle democracy at the state level, and thanks to the Chief Justice, there was no federal response to stop them.

She had a second prong planned for this trip too, not just to push a voter registration drive in the black areas of Milwaukee, but to try to press into the suburbs. If the Republican nominee was Gundersen, this'd be made infinitely harder, but a strong Democratic effort was necessary to try to win over those suburban voters who Diehl had lost to Richardson. Senate control was a prime opportunity for this, placing things like Roe back on the agenda with the power to confirm judges, as well as allowing her to ply the line of 'restraining' the President and 'ensuring bipartisan compromise'. Limitations on presidential power were a big winner for split ticket voters, and it was a message that she intended to further once the No Nonsense PAC started running ads here. This was going to be an expensive special election with so much at stake... but she had no intention of viewing that challenge as insurmountable, and the Republicans could not be allowed a trifecta without a fight.

Proceedings began at King Hall, in the Harambee area of Milwaukee, a majority black district. The venue, named after the 1960s civil rights leader whose name could also be found on the street outside, was a center for the local black community, and also a more than apt gathering spot for her to meet the local activists, shake hands, and get on the same page with them. They were less than 100 yards away from a damn highway, yet another big, noisy, arterial road that had carved its way through a black neighborhood, and she didn't exclude that from her commentary - any hope of ensuring funds to reconnect diverse communities cut up by infrastructure built through them would be surely dependent on ensuring the Democrats still had a seat at the table. Winning Wisconsin was necessary for that.

Once everyone was on the same page, it was time to spend the morning restlessly on the trail. Walking through not just the Harambee neighborhood, but also parts of other majority-minority districts, they knocked on doors, raised awareness of the coming Wisconsin special election, and gave out leaflets outlining how to get themselves registered so they could make their voices heard in what was an extremely important election. During her brief tenure as Speaker, Caroline had enjoyed a positive relationship with the Congressional Black Caucus, and she recalled much of what they had told her. It was so important to her, it had been ingrained into her, that the empowerment of black American voices was an outright necessity to ensuring the health of the Republic. She only hoped that she was conveying this ably as she went door to door. She hoped her work there wouldn't just ensure that these organizations got the funding they needed, but also that it showed the locals here that national Democrats were paying attention, and did care about matters in these communities.

As much as she was there to talk, to pass on the information of how to get registered to vote, how to participate in the political process, she also dedicated time to listening. Making sure the people in those areas felt like someone was hearing them, that their issues and struggles mattered. The sympathetic, motherly side of her came out at this. It provoked the thought - after so long of being estranged from Damian, had she at some point decided to take on the downtrodden as her children? It was a disturbingly saintlike archetype that she shook from her mind. She hardly had any right to think such things when she had utterly failed to deliver any of the promised miracles. No, there would be toils and labors and trials ahead.

After taking lunch, she parted from her more progressive colleagues who'd joined her on the initiative to take a swing at the suburbs. Whitefish Bay was one such wealthy suburb, far richer and far whiter than inner Milwaukee, and in many ways the natural stomping ground for Republicans rather than Democrats, but she had an edge here. These Republicans already had their President. They would get the thrust of the policy they wanted, taxes weren't liable to rise and the like - did they really want to let the Republican Party go mad? Or was it time for restraint, to keep the government out of people's lives, to ensure the balance of the court and the integrity of the institutions. She would play that angle well here, she thought.

Going door-to-door, she spoke about Roe with the women - and not just Roe, but Griswold underlying. How could they be so sure that a Republican trifecta across both Houses, and an ascendant conservative majority on the court, might not cross the line of low tax Republicanism and go all in on interfering in their lives. She avoided this line with the obviously very strict Catholic households, of course, but the overall message was clear - balancing a low tax, low spending approach was one thing, giving the Republicans a free hand in government was another. If they wanted to see balance in government, true bipartisanship, policy that served their communities, it was vital to keep the government split.

This was going to be a hard slog... Caroline knew that. The Democratic coalition was, to put it bluntly, far more diverse and hard to hold together than the Republican one, and if they couldn't chip into these suburbanites, that'd leave them having to win back blue collar conservatives in the northern and rural regions of the state. How far would their candidate have to fall on social issues to make that feasible? As much as those blue collar conservatives might not be prone to back Richardson, who would they be forced to sell out to try to scrape this victory from the jaws of defeat? It was all a lot to chew through. As she drove on her way back to the airport to make her return to D.C., she had to wonder... Was the prospect of maintaining the Democratic majority a hopeless illusion, or was she really making a difference here?

The grotesque spectacle of rank-and-file House Republicans standing against their own party's relief bill, the most fundamental aid even before agreed reforms to the legislation between President Richardson and Leader Hertzog are factored in - (1/3)

- is shocking, but not surprising. If Speaker Volker and the Republican House are incapable of passing the aid package, then Democrats in the Senate may surely have to do the job for them to get this ball rolling. We don't have time for - (2/3)

- childish games. Americans need aid, and they needed it yesterday. If President Richardson is unable to make good on his bipartisan promises, then that will ring a dire note for cooperation for the length of this Congress. (3/3)

Boyd Town Hall, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

"GOOOOD MORNING WISCONSIN!" He began his town hall, with a strong and energetic start, "I'm here to tell you something: the movement for progressivism, the movement for liberal values, for social justice in this country, is stronger than ever! We are going to push ahead, and we might be down now, but we're going to win the Senate in 2022, we're going to win the House, and then we're going to the White House! By 2024, we'll be back heavier and stronger than an old steel punching bag!

So let's get this energy going, and start with some questions from our lovely audience today, including our wide, diverse virtual audience from across the United States!"
This is Emazia's puppet, will be main soon.

It is truly shameful that a sitting Member of Congress would view her & our constituents so poorly as to deem them worthy of no more than $14/week. Millions of Americans are struggling, from NY & CA to KS and MS, and if this is what the House GOP… (1/2)

…has in mind for a recovery that leaves no American behind, then perhaps they should make way for Democratic efforts to tackle this recession and recovery with the gravity and seriousness that they *and* our constituents deserve. (2/2)
