The Capitol Grille, Washington D.C

Durant affably chuckled alongside Donal at the thought of Speaker of the House Maxine Caroline Durant. The sheer terror of most of the political pundits on Capitol Hill at the firebrand racist mississippian being the Speaker. If she was correct, she would become the first Mississippian to be Speaker of the House. If the Democrats retook the majority under her leadership, she would also occupy another historical slot. She'd join the ranks of House Minority Leader John Williams of her native Mississippi to be in the leadership of conservative House members. Not as a Bourbon Democrat, but possibly a Coke Republican, if the drinking political allegory said as much to her bones. Hell, maybe in a few years she could run for the Senate and be kicked upstairs there. Senator Durant did have quite a nice ring to it... She looked down, mind firmly fixed in contemplation before locking eyes with Donal.

"Unfortunately, I'm not sure I'm the strongest for a 'speaker type roll'. I doubt I'm prime 'Whip material' anyways. However, if the GOP continues to move in a leftward direction with bailouts of un-" She caught herself just in time to sweeten what she was about to say. "-people who are 'on the dole' economic wise, then I'd have to take drastic action. But, I am still a conservative woman, from my support of the 2nd Amendment to a love of animals. The one thing I'd like in a few years might be a shot as the female governor of Mississippi or even a clear shot at one of her Senate seats in some time. But, as of now, I ain't about to desert Cedar Grove to g'an n' "play Senator or Gov'nar." I need to be in the House for my people. It's far more important right now than contemplating the next move. I will admit I have thought of it between you and me. 'Gov'nar Durant or Senator Durant both sound nice offa my south'ron tounge o' mine."

When the next part about recognition of the Armenian Genocide came up, she looked down briefly while Donal was talking to figure out which state was ass backwards enough to not recognize the...oh... it was... Mississippi. Well, there was a phrase for that, after all which the other 49 states gleefully taunted her native state. TGFMS, Thank God For MisSippii. She wasn't stupid enough to deny a mass killing that happened one hundred years ago. She had made it a priority to visit the Holocaust Museum whenever she would travel on vacation, but she hadn't gotten the opportunity to.

"Well, I'm not one to deny such an atrocity. The people of Armenia suffered greviously at the hands of the Ottoman Empire. Their trials and tribulations are occassionaly brought up as shining examples of the strength that Jesus Christ his-self can gives the peoples. I ain't too sure what Jehova was doin', but he was doin' his damndest to lift on up the spirits o' the fellers that got screwed by the Otto-mans. But, I'm damn sure what yer 'sinuatin' here, Donal. Mississippi is the only state to not recognize the Armenian Genocide as a Genocide.

I ain't about to force it upon my state to make the decision. I trust my Governor to make the right call should he so wish. But it's a state decision on whether or not to recognize the Armenian Genocide as a Genocide. Yes, I git the symbolism of all 'fiddy state's standin' long n' tall together, but if one wants t' be mum on the issue, that's fine by me. I don't wanna pressure the gov'nor o' my state t' do somethin' it don't wanna do. But, if the gov'nar wanna g'an n' issue a proclamation acknolledgin' that the Ottoman Empire killed a buncha Arm-men-ians, then that's fine by me. We'd all be onna the same page then too!"

She paused in taking a sip of her Coca-Cola beverage, feeling much better following a rush of syrup to her throat and caffeine to her soft, gummy, fleshy thing she proudly bragged to the rest of the world as 'her brain'. She stopped speaking for a moment to listen to Donal talk about kill shelters. She got a bit teary-eyed at that. She quickly dabbed away the crying with the assistance of a napkin before she nodded her head fully.

"Why Donal, I would be as happy as a tornado in a trailer park to co-sponsor that sort of thing. No poor dog ought to suffer or just be senselessly killed for some sick joke. When we lie to our chil-dren n' say that 'Fido went to a farm up state'. I'd rather that be the truth. We don't need to kill no sick dog, unless we absolutely have to. If it's quality of life will be sufferin' then we can git it to the humane society n' we can humanely euthanize the poor thing. Make it not suffer no more. That's probably the only possibly way I'd like animal euthanasia to be a thing. Now, if y'all wanna cook on up some legislation to that effect that'll still allow sections of shelters to be designated 'permanent sleep shelters' or somethin' t' make lil' timmy not git so upset that he don't not know what death is 'cause ol' 99 year ol' granny's still alive n' kickin, then I'd be happy to be a co-sponsor with that regard." Durant said, crossing her arms and putting them on the table, almost as if she was about to pray.

Email To: Senator Benjamin Hertzog, Congressman Phillip Crawford
Email From: Congressman John Mattox
Re: The Electoral College
Senator and Congressman:
I have intentions to request a meeting with the president regarding the Electoral College results from 2016 and 2020. These elections were just out of our reach because of an absurd, outdated system that relies too heavily on obscure borders. I believe that, despite his partisan leanings, we can at least host a civil discussion on Electoral College reform; the Republicans will not be open to abolishing that wretched system outright. However, we may be able to convince a few Republican leaders to support special reforms such as ranked-choice voting, standardized ballots, and proportioning electoral votes based on the outcomes of the states. As an elder among the party and the Democratic Caucus, as well as one of the most outspoken supporters of changes to the system, I should at the very least be included in potential discussions. I am not sending this email to request permission, but to ask if I will have the party's support if the president and I are to come to a consensus. I will not request a meeting until after I have received replies from both of you.

Sincerely,
Congressman John A. Mattox III

Senator Colbert had received a pretty shocking invitation: the President of the United States of America was inviting him, Everitt Rigby Colbert, to the White House. Colbert had to read the email over multiple times to make sure it was real. Arnold Wolf sure never invited him, and Tawney wasn't too happy with him after he publicly called his suspension of the payroll tax "Illegal". But apparently Richardson was meeting with almost anyone in Congress. So Colbert made sure to put on his best suit that day, be extra careful with his morning routine, and make sure to have a copy of the Defense of the Pacific Act ready. Colbert went through the security screening and was led to where Richardson wanted to meet him.

The right to fair and equal treatment here in America is a right as essential as the right to vote. The Equality Act, which I am proud to be a cosponsor of, will shore up the protection these rights to millions of more Americans across the country. (1/3)

However, I am disappointed that the Equality Act is, as of now, off of the House Agenda. I find this quite unacceptable, and it tells me that Republican House Leadership doesn’t see civil rights as a top priority. (2/3)

The Equality Act needs to be put on the agenda, now if not yesterday. The rights of millions of Americans and the protection of these rights currently hangs in the balance. #getitdone #civilrights (3/3)

Caroline Simone
Illinois
Saturday 6th February, 2020

Travelling back to the Rust Belt so soon after her GOTV drive in Milwaukee was all part of the broader strategy. The Republican Party had handed her a golden ticket, a means by which she could hopefully rake in some serious money for the DNC and for Democratic candidates in tight races, and she was sure as hell going to exploit it. Hell, Diane - for all she liked the woman - had gone so far as to name check Tyson Foods on the floor of the House. That, combined with the fact that the bill was obviously receiving hardcore support from the Republican leadership, meant that a closed door fundraiser with a gaggle of lobbyists for companies like Tyson Foods and National Beef would be well worth it. Caroline had built up quite the war machine for fighting the last election, and whilst it had lost, it meant that she still had options available to her.

Image

A night at the opera, with the Lyric Opera putting on The Marriage of Figaro, was a more than suitable prelude to the drinks evening to follow, which - like the shindig she'd gathered before a couple of weeks past at the Watergate - glittered. The champagne flowed as she milled between various lobbyists, flattering them with attention whilst making clear that it was the Democrats that'd sustain the convenient relationship between business and government on the matter of meat licensing. It was a dirty business, and Caroline had never liked it. Each handshake felt filthy, but there was a clear and present purpose to each, which steeled her resolve. Campaign finance reform had been something she'd talked about a lot in the past, but long had it been a pipe dream and the political graves of so many Democrats lay in her wake - each headstone milled with the name of someone who'd refused to get down in the muck and fight the game as the rules were written. The idea of campaign finance reform was hopeless without a convincing win, after all.

Image

As the hors d'oeuvres vanished and the champagne likewise made itself scarce, and she had worked hard to flatter and fatten as many of these beef barons as she could, she plied the latter stages of her plan. Highlighting the fact that the overwhelming Republican support for the MARKET Act was a sign of betrayal from Republicans towards the agricultural sector - and that if control of the Senate slipped, it was possible that the bill might end up being pushed through by an increasingly radical Republican Party in one way or another. Why rely on them when they're throwing themselves at your industry? Targeting you? Calling you out? Agriculture was a key American industry, and American beef was an institution. These talking points were all designed to flatter and coax, and to speak in code.

Let us protect you from the mob.

It was, ultimately, a shakedown, but a vulnerability had been opened and it would have been a foolish thing for the Democrats to not seize on it. There was no Lady Macbeth moment tonight, for all of Caroline's unease. No scrubbing of the hands. No 'out damn spot'. Perhaps Robin Diehl snatching defeat from the jaws of victory had hardened her heart. Perhaps it was a mutation of her guilt into something vitriolic and hateful. But Wisconsin had to be won at all costs. At all costs. If that meant that she had to bat her eyelids at greasy meatpacking lobbyists, so be it. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. And thanks to Diane Paulson, she hoped - she prayed - that Tom Volker had made an enemy of the meatpacking industry.

FIRST
Television ad for the Milwaukee media market, and online for people in the greater Milwaukee area.
Two week run from Saturday 6th February to Friday 19th February, 2019
(Narrative tone: Maternal woman, Wisconsinite accent.)

"The Republican Party have touted that they've achieved a few firsts this year with their new administration coming into office, but why don't we take a look at what they've been doing first in Congress?"

Image

"The first bill taken up by the Republican House would have allowed more outside money into the pockets of members of Congress, watering down the Ethics in Government Act brought in after the Watergate scandal."

Image

"Their first partisan priority after the bipartisan relief package was passed? Gutting the meat inspection standards that keep unsafe food off of our families' dinner tables."

Image

"Their first substantive vote in the Senate? Killing an amendment that'd ensure new research and development funds would benefit our local economy here in the Midwest during the worst economic crisis since the Depression."

"Whether you voted for President Richardson, or voted against him, are these the priorities you voted for? Do you want to let Speaker Volker and Leader O'Halleran get away with it?"

February 5, 2021
2409 Wyoming Ave NW, Washington, DC 20008

Deborah Feyrer had a small quaint townhouse in Washington D.C.

Courtesy of being a widow, she returned to a house that was often empty - and tidy. Her two maids did the cleaning, Alberta and Louisa, both good Southern gals who needed employment, Deb happily employed them both. That evening she returned to have dinner at home, she would be entertaining two guests. Her younger sister, and brother-in-law. As she arrived home that evening, she was exhausted. She entered her house, took off her shoes and placed her handbag on the table by the door, Louisa approaching to place items where they needed to go as Deb herself climbed the stairs. She glanced at her watch, she had thirty minutes before she tolerated her godforsaken family.

She entered her bedroom as Alberta had put out a dress of choice, and pair of earrings. Alberta had also taken it upon herself to put a watch of choice out, a thin silver piece. Deborah looked at the stout woman, "I wouldn't be caught dead in that," she declared, "bring the black and then," she pointed into her wardrobe, "that one."

Alberta silently did her job and Deb began getting changed. She put her earrings on, the watch and dropped her clothes on the floor, allowing Alberta to clean up the mess. She made her way into her office, and began reading a report surrounding Afghanistan when Louisa entered the room. Deborah paid no attention. Louisa said nothing. Deborah looked up, "are they here?"

Louisa nodded.

Deb closed the folder, standing and walking past Louisa with no care paid as she returned down the stairs, and greeted her sister.

"Deborah," her sister smiled.

"Darling," Deborah replied.

"This is a very quiet house," her sister giggled, "not one word from your staff, not a peep around the place," she made the remark.

Deb with a fully straight face as she greeted her brother-in-law, smiled comfortably, "well, I go to a long length to give opportunities to those who don't have them."

"I wasn't aware you supported Affirmative Action," her brother-in-law chuckled.

"I don't," Deb led them towards the sitting room, "but when you want silence, you hire those incapable of speaking," the couple in front of her laughed as Deb sat down, and their night began, "if you wanted, you could hire some yourself," she extracted a pamphlet titled Hiring from Us, a Guideline to the Office of Disability Employment Policy, "they're a great company, based in North Carolina, but they have wonderful applicants for almost every position when it comes to home care."

"Well thank you for your appreciation of the Defense of the Pacific Act. And as for BUILD, it would expand some federal programs that focus on improving the supply of affordable housing. Park City, Greater Salt Lake, housing costs are up, cost of livings going up, people need some relief. Now, I did submit an amendment that would have ensured that each state got funds proportional to their population to ensure that New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago got all the money. I hear Gaspard likes the bill, and I think a few other Republicans would be in favor, but Deborah Freyer was threatening a filibuster. I'd like to hear your opinion."

ImageSenate Majority Leader Benjamin Hertzog's Office
Washington, DC

Walking swiftly the the Majority Leader's office, Rogers was nervous. He'd already gotten flak from his now former campaign manager over the phone about MARKET earlier that morning, and while he was anticipating another lecture about his maverick ways upon his arrival at Hertzog's office, it was certainly not something he was looking forward to. On top of that, he figured Hertzog would be pretty unhappy that Rogers and Vichter killed his amendment to the EFA.

William approached the secretary sitting at the entrance of the office and spoke up.

"Hey. I'm Senator William Rogers. Senator Hertzog requested that I meet him here after we adjourned the the Senate for the day."

Dan Gundersen for Senate
Advertisement #1- Experience Matters

[Video of Dan Gundersen standing in front of a Dairy Dan’s restaurant outside of his car]

“I’m Dan Gundersen, and I’m running for United States Senate.”

“Ya’know, I’ve spent a buncha time around Wisconsinites of all stripes. Experience matters. Everyone wants a Senator with real-world experience. I’m the guy with the experience for the job.”

Image

[Video angle from passenger seat of car, looking at Dan Gundersen]

“I served as Mayor of Waukesha, where I started the Zero Pothole Initiative and ensured safe roads in our city.”

[Fast-forward-style video follows Gundersen out of car and onto train platform]

“I also worked with Milwaukee leadership to build a vital commuter rail line between the two cities.”

Image

[Gundersen checks his watch as the train pulls in behind him. Gundersen looks at the train and turns back to the camera.]

“Right on schedule. That’s what experience does.”

[The doors of the train open, and the camera follows Gundersen inside, where he takes a seat.]

Image

“Before I was mayor, I served for several decades in the United States Navy as a logistics expert, ensuring efficient movement of food and supplies to our troops.”

“Then I went into business. I started ‘Dairy Dan’s,’ a national restaurant built on Wisconsin values and my mother’s homemade ice cream recipes.”

“I’m not here to brag about my accomplishments. But Wisconsin needs a leader with real-world experience, not a career politician or a media pundit. In Waukesha, my decades of real-world experience helped us make the practical, common-sense reforms needed to get the local economy up and running.”

[The train stops, and Gundersen stands up. The camera follows him from the train, to the platform, and then out onto the street in front of the Congress building in Washington, DC.]

Image

“I want to take that attitude of common-sense reform and Wisconsin values to the United States Senate. With your vote, I will make that happen. With your vote, we can stop China’s economic attacks on our nation and build America’s economy back with a robust resurgence of manufacturing jobs.”

“Experience matters. Choose a candidate with the experience to unleash America's greatness.”

“I’m Dan Gundersen, and I approve this message.”

Dear Mr. Palmer,

I confess that the general context of your email prior was a little strange to me, and I'm not usually in the business of taking anonymous meetings, but a phonecall doesn't seem like it'd hurt, and I'm eager to explore further avenues by which the Democratic Party can continue to prove that it is the party of agriculture, and can foster a mutually supportive relationship between business and government. I'll be happy to call him at a time mutually convenient.

Best wishes,

“Look… in your position in a different time? I might support it, deregulation of the housing market to expand the supply of housing is a good idea. The problem is in this one of the worst economic crisis In history and people are going to be fighting for every dollar… and frankly this bill by and large is going to blue states whose bad housing policies have created this crisis… and I wouldn’t disagree with that assessment… and frankly giving them money to do the right thing and make good policy for their people ticks me off.”

Richardson exhaled and leaned back “but is that reason to let people suffer? No… listen this bill isn’t passing as written or with the amendment proposed… that’s just the reality… However if you withdraw the bill and come back in two months or so with a version that gives something more to the red states? Then I can take the case to Volker and O’Hall…
I’ll advocate for your bill but right now this just isn’t a fight you can win, or the party wants.”
