There was anger, there was sadness, there was a relief, there was sorrow, there was a belated and strange sense of joy at the newfound freedom of it all. She still wasn't entirely sure how she felt about it or even how she should feel about it, but either way, he was in the six feet under and she was still out here in the land of the living. In all honesty, she wasn't completely sure why she felt the need to come out and visit today either, but it felt right. Four years ago they had visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier together, two years ago he told her about the diagnosis, eight months ago he died, and tomorrow, tomorrow would be a new day in Washington.

As he looked up and out towards DC, she wondered what was going through the President-Elect and the future First Lady's heads. All the planning and ambition, all those hopes and dreams, and now it had all come to fruition, now they were the most powerful couple known to humankind. With only a few hours away now, she bet they could already start to feel it, what it must be like to know the whole nation is looking at you as you hold that bible and raise your right hand, what it must be like to sit in at the resolute desk for the first time, what it must be like plotting the start of your own political career a few years down the line, etc, etc.

She smirked and crouched down to put a hand on the grave and offer up a brief prayer before leaving the cemetery and heading back into Washington to meet with an old friend of hers.

She was aging faster with the changing of the times, the new dilemmas erupting. There was so much work to be done.

“Shame we couldn’t get Springsteen to play” Nate mumbled to his wife as they emerged from their temporary DC residence and got into the car with his wife Amanda. She chuckled back and smiled at him, “oh should we call off the inauguration? I think its a bit late to concede now babe.” Richardson returned the chuckle and settled in the back of the limo driven by Secret Service, and quickly found himself staring aimlessly out the window and allowing the silence to sit.

“You’re going to do a lot of good Nate” Amanda said finally after almost 10 minutes of watching her husband stew in his own thoughts “You could not be more prepared for this… you’ve gotten so much lined up already and Tawney has been excellent in the transition.” Nate shook his head and ran his hand through his hair, an anxious tick going back to his childhood, “They have been yes but that’s not my worry… How much time have I already lost with Jessica? With you? I know that you both told me to go for it… But this is going to be so far beyond Congress or the Governor’s mansion… especially right now.”

Amanda’s deep almond eyes met Nate’s, he could feel her resolve and her understanding. “Nate if you didn’t do this you wouldn’t be the man I fell in love with, you wouldn’t be Jessica’s father… I knew from the moment we met that this is something you were going to take a shot at some day, and once its done…. Well you owe Jessica and I a vacation…. In the meantime, don’t make promises you can’t keep to us… if you say you’ll be at Jessica’s birthday then be there, things like that. Don’t lie to us or yourself and we will be fine.”

Exiting the car Nate and Amanda were immediately swarmed by well wishers, shaking their hands and congratulating them as they moved to begin the inauguration ceremony. Such pomp and circumstance had never been Nate’s MO but he acknowledged that it was not only expected but normalizing for a large swath of Americans. Skipping the ceremonial elements, the trappings of office would be unsettling to many while having a President act ‘normal’ would help the American subconscious accept their newly elected leader.

Nate hadn’t won the popular vote, although he had actually performed much better in that aspect than he had expected, and while he wasn’t expecting any kind of popular uprising it did hurt his legitimacy and governing authority. Gaining that legitimacy and confidence, or at least basic respect, was an overarching priority. He didn’t believe the country should have a pure popular vote for the Presidency, however he had to acknowledge that the consistency of the disconnect between the EC and the popular vote over the past 2 decades did not inspire confidence in the democratic process.

The plan was first to show a competence and know-how for setting up a government which Wolf had lacked, getting cabinet officials through quickly and giving them clear objectives and mandates. This required making compromises on his cabinet officials through secret meetings with the Democratic leadership. A few of his ideal picks were unacceptable to the left or right, most of which he could probably get through with a bit more effort but who would start him off on a poor footing with Congress and cause him to expend political capital and time.


This was about first impressions, his first words after being sworn in, setting up his cabinet his first legislative push, foreign visit… All of this would set the tone and the tenor for what was to come.

After an eternity of waiting and endless ceremony he put his left hand on his family bible and swore his oath to the people and the Constitution. Then he turned to the crowd and spoke his own words.

Sitting among the seats reserved for Members of Congress, Oliver watched the inauguration, a stoic impression on his face. It took all his willpower to keep from rolling his eyes at every mention of Reagan in President Richardson’s inaugural address - Reagan was many things to Oliver: a racist who encouraged a drug war against Black and POC Americans; a homophobe whose Administration practically bounced with glee when gay men were dying of AIDS and only acted when straight people started catching it as well; and a self-destructive fool whose actions whittled away Americans’ trust in their government.

He felt something akin to encouragement with regards to how Richardson aimed to address infrastructure spending, though he certainly didn’t trust him. How could he? When Wolf was in power, Republican leaders were falling over themselves to be his “pick me”, sacrificing their supposed values and claims of bipartisanship for naked xenophobia, cruelty, bigotry, and flirtations with authoritarianism. Oliver was not convinced of Richardson’s authenticity - trust and respect would have to be earned. Oliver did roll his eyes when Richardson opened up his salvo against “open borders” and immigration. Leave it to a Republican to be uneducated on immigration issues, he thought to himself.

And of course, no mention of LGBTQ people when he was speaking of discrimination. Oliver wasn’t expecting much in that regard, but now he wondered whether or not Richardson would actively enact policies that could endanger LGBTQ equality in the United States. There wasn’t much he could do through legislation, but he could go farther than Wolf’s executive orders did if he felt the desire to. All in all, Oliver would walk away from the speech with more concern about this new President than he had when he sat down. A pretty speech, to be sure, but that’s all it was.

Transitioning from one Republican administration to another had definitely reduced the number of teething problems for the new Press Secretary in assuming his present position, but that didn't mean that the process hadn't still been disruptive for him, going from his office with the transition team to a West Wing that still felt very foreign to him in a number of ways. Not the areas to which he had been publicly able to reach as a journalist, but now these back corridors that for so long had been the preserve of those in government. Now he was in government, and there was no denying it felt challengingly oppressive. That was potentially in no small part because of his boss, the nigh-fascistic Chief of Staff who scared the ever-living crap out of him (though he admired deep down for his effective management).

The previous night had, to a certain extent, been blurry. For all the darkness enveloping the nation, an inauguraton is fundamentally a party. A party with good company, plenty to eat, and plenty to drink aside. And he'd indulged, of course he'd indulged, and dear God he was paying for it now. The light streaming in wasn't fantastic for his mood, even though he'd gulped down a half hundredweight of water since he'd woken up, he still had something of a headache. Still, he'd freshened up nicely, he didn't look to be in any disarray, and with his glasses on, the bags under his eyes didn't draw too much attention, though anyone'd forgive that as just a late night. Nobody at the White House got decent sleep except the First Lady, that was vaguely how it worked.

Navigating his way towards the press room, he read over his notes, grimacing as he read some of the notes he'd made the previous day. 'Dud speech'. Yeah, there were going to be questions about the contents of that inaugural address. He wasn't exactly looking forward to it, and he could see why Bob had been quite so apoplectic in the senior staff they'd held before the inauguration. And then he entered the press room, to be before the barrage of accusative pens and inquisitve cameras that he was so used to being on the other side of, settling his notes onto the rostrum and going to speak.

"The relief bill is the first priority of the President's Administration, and even before the transition, President Richardson has been working hard to cement congressional support for a swift passage of that relief. By all accounts, we should expect to see it on the agenda in the House very soon. We're talking in a timescale of days rather than weeks here. Progress on the relief bill has been extremely promising so far, and the White House is confident that we will very soon be able to see a visible federal response to the crisis."

Inauguration Day

Representative Diane Paulson

Diane was surprised by the invite. While she had been to plenty of inaugurations before as a Representative, a reporter, and a wife, she had never been invited to sit in the small crowd of individuals behind the President. While she hardly considered herself a member of anyone's "inner circle" in Washington DC, this was a different GOP than 10, or 20 years ago. She had a trusted ally in the speakership, and another in the incoming President. Gone were the days of wanting to leave the party like she secretly did under Wolf. But seated here with numerous other GOP leaders and many of Richardson's potential cabinet picks, Paulson couldn't help but feel as proud to be a Republican as she did in 1984 when Reagan took his second term. Maybe she wasn't right there in the real "inner circle," but she was close enough to it that Richardson and Volker were trusting her to spearhead important bills. That's something that she never had when Wolf or (not-Bush) was in office; in those years, she was seen by leadership as a liability and rarely given important duties. Paulson hadn't expected the feeling at all, but there was a sense of relief with Richardson in the Oval Office. He was at least someone she felt she could be candid with, which she hadn't had in a President since the Gipper himself was in office.

Diane sat patiently through Richardson's speech, with her clapping ranging from polite to enthusiastic. She tried to avoid being noticeably disapproving when Richardson brought up "open borders," which was jarring because the rest of the speech had what she thought was such a nice, patriotic yet pro-immigration tone.

Senator William S. Rogers III

Senator Rogers did a really good job of looking like he was listening during the speech. In reality, after sitting down with some of his fellow Democratic Senators, he zoned out and really didn't listen to anything Richardson said past the part about tax credit. He became lost in a daydream thinking about what it would be like to himself be on that stage, giving a speech introducing him as the leader of the free world. He clapped along when his fellow Democrats did but paid little attention to the rhetorical fluff coming from the President.

Instead, he thought about what he would say, and just as importantly, how he would say it. He would talk about the economy, about growth, about the American values of hard work and about the importance of a government built to serve the common people. He would definitely take a quote from John F. Kennedy's inauguration.

A big part of him deeply longed to be the one up on that stage. Something that was in him since a child that he couldn't shake, some sort of feeling that only he was in tune with what could fix the thing that had been deeply broken in this country for years. He contemplated if he should feel guilty for feeling like he was entitled to take the Oval Office someday, but for some reason, he still couldn't shake the feeling. God, I could use a cigarette, he thought to himself.

He snapped out of the daydreaming when he heard Richardson say the words "rule of law." He had his doubts that Nate would see it through, but maybe this is what was missing. He felt like he lived under a despot when Wolf was president. The Russian interference, the proposed Muslim travel bans, and everything like that had worn on Rogers' faith that he could work cordially with any future Republican president.

But if Richardson truly respected the office, Rogers would give him a chance.

Mayor Daniel Gundersen

As an enthusiastic Richardson supporter, Dan Gundersen brought his wife Shawna, his son Anders, his brother Olaf and his family, and his brother Karl and his family, to DC join the festivities. In addition to attending the inauguration, they planned on spending the rest of the week sightseeing. Anders, as well as Olaf and Karl's pre-teen grandchildren, had never been to the capital of the nation before. They joined the crowds further back on the National Mall, where the mood was quite jovial as the crowd was made more of Richardson voters enthusiastic to see their new President than the randomly-assembled crowd of bureaucrats and politicians closer to the front.

House office of U.S Representative Maxine Caroline Durant

A light click was heard as the lights flicked on. What was illuminated was a map that had a rather jagged shape cut out from the U.S State of Mississippi. A collection of grainy newspaper colored photos of white (and the token black guy from Reconstruction) men encircled all four corners of the room, starting from the doorframe. Behind the desk, next to a large Old Glory was the "old" Mississippian flag with the battle jack. It was simply something this representative had refused to part with when that idiot governor decided to get rid of the flag because of "PC bullshit". A large collection of newspaper clippings that held the author's name were also held together by an excessive amount of hot glue and tacks to a soft, wooden board. On her desk was a golden plate which decoratively spelt out her name, as if being on the door to her House office didn't give the impression of whom had owned it. Finally, a completely wooden mock up of a Remington Shotgun painted in Confederate red and white was supported on the top shelf of the small library of congressional materials and references she kept for good measure on the right side of her office.

The hand that had done such an action moved besides the door and gently pushed it shut, with yet another shudder being heard down the halls of the outside to the room. A small collection of footsteps quickly accompanied the small break in something happening, with the scraping of a chair across the room. A flurry of keys being typed quickly lead to the whirring motors inside of an advanced digital device known as a 'computer' spinning faster until they could catch up.

Representative Maxine quietly set the box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts beside her House Desk, occasionally rifiling her fingers through it to find a hot, warm glazed one waiting for an equally as hungry mouth. Her eyes were fixated on her in-box of the hundreds of e-mails that she saw to it to read before going to the House chamber each and every morning she was in Washington D.C. As much as she wished she could do even more to bring Congress to them, digital communication was an easy way to earn points with her constituents (and try to beat off any right-wing nut-jobs that say 'you've failed us in Cedar Grove').

She then decided to flick open a video streaming service and eyed the Presidential Inauguration of Nathan Richardson. The remaining ten doughnuts unfortunately met their end as she hungered throughout the show, her face a rather unprofessional mess of frosting and glaze from her fried friends. Dapping across a napkin prior to crumbling the thin paper away, her eyes remained fixated on the light blue glow of the screen. Her ears were still silent, but she had enabled captions on so as to not disturb any-one else surrounding her Congressional Office. Unfortunately, she had caught the broadcast rather late in the day, so when she turned to it, this was what President Richardson had been talking about:

“The best economic remedy for this is a long overdue infrastructure investment. Research Universities, high speed internet, gas pipelines, and of course ports, roads and bridges… These will help provide prosperity to the entire country. We see areas like Northwest Arkansas, Texas and North Carolina’s Research Triangle thrive because of investments in infrastructure. The single best investment we can make in the American people… the best investment we can make in the betterment and empowerment of the middle and working class...is through infrastructure.”

"No It ain't, y'all is a buncha stupid fucks, yer 'conomists yer hired..." She hissed under her breath. Maxine quickly turned her head and was rather thankful that no-one caught wind of her outburst. But, she did have a reason to be furious. She had seen the national deficient rise under Wolf by trillions of dollars. She wanted to find some-way to at least level off spending. Paying off the debt? Well that was ridiculous. She wasn't dumb, she knew that people in her district would enjoy some pork spending, so she would have to find someway to funnel money into her district. Hospitals? too expensive. Gun ranges?

Now that would be something she could happily skip along to. Breaking up large monopolies of Farms and handing those lands out to individuals within her district and across the United States? That was something she would enjoy going along with, should some-one present the option to her. Roads and Bridges? well, maybe more money towards maintenance of existing highways, waterways and bridges, but she didn't want to spent a complete fortune on allocating more money towards new roadways. She just wanted to work with what God (and by that extension Uncle Sam himself) had granted her, and if that meant some shitty dirt road in the middle of BFE, then she didn't see the need for five on-ramps or a fucking bridge to now-where.

"We must continue to fight illegal immigration. Stopping asylum fraud, holding countries in central America accountable and working with them to stop illegal immigration, curbing the flow of illegal drugs coming across our border, fighting violent gangs and kicking them out of the country."

This line brought a smile to her face. It was pure red-meat to her conservative bona fides. She had been elected and consistently re-elected on her hardline stance against "illegals" and she wasn't about to soften because the liberal wing cried tears over it. Maxine wanted to ensure the illegals stay out of the country. She didn't want the process to come into the country to get any easier..but she didn't exactaly want to turn it into a "poll test and tax" that her state had been infamous for following Reconstruction. Lord knows that would end up back-firing badly on the GOP come.. when was she up for re-election again? She shrugged her shoulders, unable to remember. Maybe instead of wolfing down the diabetus filled sugar bombs known as doughnuts, some coffee would be more appropriate in this situation.

"We must acknowledge and address the threat of China and its bid to dominate the world. Its goal of dominating key industries and forcing international trade to bow to its wishes… the whims of the Chinese Communist Party leadership…"

She nodded right alongside another bite of doughnut. Maxine and China were like oil and water. They didn't get along very well. She had been an adamant and vocal opponent of the PRC and their dictator ever since she had been growing up trying to avoid dying in bomb shelters. Back then it was the Soviets they had to worry about...today it was the Chinese goose-stepping all over Asia. She felt as though this administration, unlike the Baharia cowards that were lead by the damned n-African man, could actually stand up tall against both North Korea and China.

The only thing that was really missing was a full-throated "fuck you" to the PRC. What would really make her enthused to vote for almost anything, would be if somehow, there was some guarantee that the U.S would sever diplomatic ties with the People's Republic of China and recognize the sole government of the Republic of China on Taipei. She knew it was a mad dream by a mad woman, but if this country managed to elect Wolf over Clifford of all people, then there might be a small sprinkling of hope in that regard.

She raised and eyebrow, blinked twice before really squinting at the mouth movements the President had made with this next part of the speech. While John Stennis had been known as an ardent segregationist, (infamously, as she might add) She still greatly appreciated what he had done for the South. In her mind, MLK might has well have been a member of the KKK! Both were radical extremists, though one went about it in a much nicer way than say... George Wallace or Lincoln Rockefeller. While she still had an issue of the white president quoting that 'black hippy terrorist' as her father had railed in her earlier memories, she bit her tonged and sighed. It was a disappointing end to the speech, as she decided to turn it off and instead had her gaze fixated to a small marble toy of Mississippi Senator John Stennis. As she concentrated on various things that were racing towards her mind, a quote from the man stumbled into the front cortex and she spoke it out, almost on accident.

"I do believe the most important thing I can do now is to help young people understand the past and prepare for the future".

Representative Maxine Caroline Durant was, admittedly, nervous right now. She knew she wasn't bad enough to warrant knowing the whip on a first name basis. She could have sworn that some sitting senators and representatives had been so bad and misbehaved that they knew the whip on a first name basis. There were also the rumors of favors that flew about on the deep corners of the internet, but she dismissed those out of hand. She tried her best to calm her breathing, reduce her heart-rate, and think of herself going to the principles office, and not the disciplinary whip of one of the most powerful chambers in western democracy. With that, oh so comforting thought tucked away, she lightly knocked on the door to see the Majority Whip.

"Earl? I'm here. I got yer message that y'all wanted to meet with me. What's this about exact-ally? I've got a lil' bit o' an ideer or two floatin' inna my brain, but I'd prefer it straight from the horses mouth' as it were."
