The Whip for MARKET is Aye. Following this Whip is mandatory.

To: Representative Maxine Durant (R-MS-3)

I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you meant to say Aye. I suggest changing your vote right now unless you want another visit to my office.

United States House of Representatives
Representative Maxine Caroline Durant [R-MS-3]

Durant was watching as the hundreds of other members in the House stood up one by one to cast their votes. She was able to make out just as many hoarse throated "Yes"es in comparison to the (mostly democratic if her hearing was right) number of "Noes", one of which had been her own voice moments after the vote had opened up on the House Floor. Suddenly, she was jabbed by a piece of paper. Crumbling it up, then uncrumbling it, she took notice of two notes.

The Whip for MARKET is Aye. Following this Whip is mandatory.

"Bullshit on a stick. I ain't gonna be bullied. I had problems with the damn bill and I met with my 'stituents onna thems matters. They didn't want me to vote fer the bill. Well, I did only talk to a homeless guy that smelt like booze and proclaimed his-self the Duke of Shanghai or some shit. I mean everyone else I chatted wit was either fer the bill er 'gainst it. I made on up my mind then." She thought to herself defiantly before scribbiling out a cheerful response to Tenson's personal message to Representative Durant.

No, y'all heard me right the first time. It's a No from Max. I have serious problems with the bill, too many problems for me to vote yes. I had a meetin' wit Representative Donal n' we actually came to an agreement on it, among other bills n' legislation that'll mozy their small asses down the Legislative choppin' block known as the Yoo Ess House o' Representin'.

P.S. I'll bring a bottle of coke to smooth things over with you in your office. Consider it a date bae! ; )

Don’t bother. If you fail to change your vote I will simply be asking the Speaker to strip you of your Committee assignments. Is this bill really worth that?

Fine. More Pop fer my fat ass, dunno what in the hell you're problem is Whippy!

Well, on one hand I could tow the party line to delay the inevitable, or I could actually show some feminine Mississippian backbone to you yankee carpetbaggers. From my countin' on the fingers it looks like this here bill is a g'an n' fail. I ain't gonna hedge no bets yet, but I'll gladly pay your ass a dollar bill if MARKET passes the House at this rate.

I have made my hill and I intend to die on it, for bipartisanship against a bad bill that'll make children sick. Earl, I can't back you on up inna this endeavor unfortunately. From the bottom of my heart (and my pocket book) I am sorry. It's nothing personal between us (that I can come up with an excuse for anyways), it's just a mississippian woman disagreein' with a mainer woman.

Congressman John A. Mattox III (D-MA 8) replies to the Democratic Caucus's Chair.

Congressman Crawford,
I cannot in good conscience vote against this bill, the least of bills, when the positives outweigh the negatives. I vote on the party line 99% of the time. This is the 1% of the time where I do not.
Sincerely,
John A. Mattox
