Laz, sending your fresh recruits to a warrior army first and then transferring them into an experienced army doesn't suddenly gift them years of military training - they're still bringing down the average training of your elites, as they aren't themselves experienced. I like the hustle of that idea though!

Two notes on the update:

Olth, Trade Value transferred from town to town has to be unidirectional - if Sorrowfree is sending Trade Value to Daru, she cannot also transfer it to Three Brothers and Kura Kumbe.

Found the issue, I think. On T16 I had two militia armies - Serpent and Wolf. Both were heavily damaged. I did the merge to make a full militia army, and then marked Serpent as a Warrior army because I was intending to retrain it. But I ended up sending it to Corvus that turn instead, thus giving it the appearance of merging a Warrior and a Militia army to make a Militia.
