Hey folks, would anybody be interested in a drama/thriller RP with mild horror elements centered around a recently deposed African dictator and his family? The RP would take place in a fictional Central African kingdom - a former protectorate of the Belgian Congo - during a violent period of civil war in the mid-1990s. Forced to flee the capital with his family and most trusted aides, the king's airplane is struck by a rocket over rebel territory in the dense jungles of the nation's central river valley. Players will take on the roles of the survivors, forced to confront both the terrors of the untamed wilderness and the unspeakable crimes of the old king's fallen regime. I am also considering an experimental style of roleplaying which will see periodic flashbacks to the family's "better" times while they were still in power, illustrating the how their choices - combined with the lingering influence of European colonialism and neo-colonialism - condemned the fledgling state to failure.

I haven't been many RP's set in Africa lately, much less from the perspective of African characters who come from positions of power. I think it could be a really interesting opportunity for unique storytelling and worldbuilding.

So I have decided to go ahead and develop this RP idea into a full-fledged OOC thread, and I figured I would expound on a little more detail just in case anyone wanted to come up with some preliminary character ideas. The RP will be set in the fictional Central African state of Zangalia - a poorly-developed, war-torn nation still reeling from six decades of colonial rule as a Belgian protectorate from 1897 to 1961. A paradisical land rich in natural resources, Zangalia has long been coveted by those who should not possess it. The country's leader, King Luzolo Muwanzi (born Jean-Baptiste Muwanzi), has reigned over the Zangalian people as a cruel and iron-fisted despot since 1964, when he overthrew the previous republican government in a coup d'état. After four years of increasingly authoritarian rule as president, Muwanzi capitalized on his alleged ties to the pre-colonial monarchy by crowning himself King of Zangalia in 1968, adopting the Zangalified name of "Luzolo" as a symbolic gesture. Despite his professed efforts toward "cleansing" the nation of its colonial vestiges, Muwanzi became little more than a Western-backed dictator of a far-off place that few people in the developed world could even point out on a map.

Fast-forward to 1994 when the RP begins: Zangalia is in absolute shambles. In 1991, an uprising against the Muwanzi regime by the rebel Zangalian Patriotic Union (French: Union patriotique zangalienne / UPZ) plunged the nation into civil war. And with the Cold War having ended, Muwanzi could no longer rely on his Western allies for support. Over the next two years, the Muwanzi regime began to crumble as the Zangalian Armed Forces lost precious ground to the UPZ and its local allies. But the death knell of the regime was not rung until 1993, when the Free Democratic Alliance (French: Alliance démocratique libre / ADL) - a Ugandan-based organization of Zangalian exiles and dissidents - launched an invasion of Zangalia from the country's northeastern borders. In less than a year, Luzolo and the Zangalian royal family are forced to flee the capital city of Kimbala as UPZ and ADL forces converge on the city's outskirts. Bound for the neighboring Republic of Zaire, the Muwanzi family's private jet is shot down over the Likosi Basin - Zangalia's central river valley - leaving the survivors to fend for themselves in the treacherous wilderness.

You, the players, are members of the Muwanzi family - survivors of the crash trapped in the jungled hinterlands of a nation whose populace your family (and maybe even you, personally) has abused for so many years. The path ahead will be a journey of fear, desperation, and atonement for the sins of the past. In addition to the rainforest and its wildlife, you will be forced to contend with hostile warlords, diseases, foreign intrigue, and division/infighting among your own ranks. It will be a terrifying struggle, and the odds of survival will not be in your favor.

Players can take on the roles of any Muwanzi family members they'd like. They may play as Luzolo's siblings, children, grandchildren, cousins, in-laws, close friends - whatever (Luzolo will be aged 73 at the beginning of the RP, so his mother and father are the only two roles that are really off-limits). I will be filling out an application for King Luzolo himself. There are, however, three roles that must be filled before the RP begins:

• The Consort: The wife and queen consort of King Luzolo I. Perhaps you are Luzolo's longtime partner. You've been with him through thick and thin - from his days as an askari with the Force Publique to his coronation as King of Zangalia. Or perhaps you are not his first spouse, but his second or third. It doesn't really matter. In the end, you are the old king's queen who boarded that jet in its ill-fated flight to Zaire. And now, like the rest of the House of Muwanzi, you are trapped in the middle of nowhere. This role must be filled by a female character.
  
  
• The Heir: The Crown Prince of Zangalia and heir to Luzolo's throne. Whether you are a son, grandson, nephew, brother, or even cousin of Luzolo I, you were destined to succeed him as king prior to the family's flight from Kimbala. By law, the Zangalian monarchy follows a tradition of male-preference primogeniture, which means this role will have to be filled by a male character. Themes of gender roles in the strictly patriarchal society of Zangalia will absolutely be explored throughout the RP, and this could be a great source of conflict between male and female characters in the Muwanzi family.
  
  
• The Guardian: The Commander of the Zangalian Royal Guard and, by extension, chief bodyguard of Luzolo and the Muwanzi family. You have devoted your life to Luzolo and his kin. A trusted soldier and sentinel, the Zangalian royals will likely be counting on you for protection in this dire situation. How will you respond? This role must be filled by a male character. And, unlike the rest of the cast, it is actually required that this character not be a member of the Muwanzi family - blood relative or otherwise.

Because of the RP's setting and themes, it will likely have an all-Black cast of native Zangalian characters, which I think will be a really interesting angle from which to explore the story. Politically speaking, the roleplay will take heavy inspiration from the Latin American dictator novel genre, exploring the complicated dynamics that exist between power and humankind. Both the character of Luzolo and the setting of Zangalia will take inspiration from real-life historical figures and places. But it's still a work of fiction, and it will not depict any actual events or make any prescriptive statements.

Glad to see some interest! Writing long posts on a phone is not easy and I found a solid 5-10 spelling errors and grammatical issues after posting that.

Part of the OOC will be written from the perspective of a fictionalized Peter Jennings on ABC World News Tonight reporting on the disappearance of the Muwanzi family and King Luzolo's life from Belgian colonial soldier to military dictator of independent Zangalia.

Based on the Russian Civil War and its foreign interventions, especially the one of the Czechoslovak Legion, this will be a character based RP were you Will take the role of a Soldier of the Frerotrevlian Legion, formed by Frerian and Trevlian volunteers, the legion served for a period on the frontline against the Hessarian Empire under the command of the armed forces of the Republic of Vrigny, after the end of the great war, the Legion is sent into the Sokovian Front in the Sokovian Empire, the fight is fierce and the Legion, after the occupation of the city of Tugla, Sokovia under Emperor Nikolay II, fell in the chaos of Civil War, now the Legion is blocked into a country in Civil war and must return back. Tech level Is WW2, principally the Legion is equipped with Finnish equipments and 1940-41 German equipments.

I think so: I put enough effort into writing the OP that I'm likely to re-use it with only very minor changes. So any saved apps you have left over should work for the new version.

three new ideas :


a character based RP in post WWI Italy, players will asssist at the came in power of Mussolini, to its downfall in 1945. You will impersonate one of the few Mussolini's supporters in the Fasci Italiani da Combattimento, the predecessor of the Partito Nazionale Fascista, as his close advisors, get promotions and government positions, become influent and eventually assist at the regime's downfall in 1943, then decide if you want to remain with Mussolini or change faction. The RP will cover every major political event from 1919 to 1945 in Italy, from the 1919-1920 strikes " Biennio Rosso " to the Matteotti murder to the Ethiopian War and the downfall of the Regime after the Landing in Sicily. I'll need some help for cordinating this idea


a character based RP, the plot follows the history of the Kreise Empire, governed by a council of 20 people called the marshalls, the council governs the Empire and for now the state was thriving, till a crippling economic crisis and a war against other countries left the Kreise Empire completed crippled. Kreise is now under a crisis and all the council marshalls must act quick or else The Empire will be destroyed, You will impersonate a Marshall, and through scheming, political machinations and betrayals you will decide the fate of the Empire


an RP based on a post-war scenario, where after the collapse of the Borodian Empire after the Great Borodian War against the nations of Buron, Hiblund and Strin,The empire was splitted between 8 nations, however, the situation quickly went south, with Strium fell in a civil war, Hiltria became a Socialist Dictatorship, Borodia is crippling in dept and in a political crisis, Schartel and Wehlein are going to war after General Wiktor Smokal became the dictator of Wehlein, Ristin is becoming a Fascist state, Kosra is struggling under an uncapable government and Kallern is fighting to remain indipendent.
