Welcome to the Advanced Combat and Exorcism Specialists. Based in Greenland and working in a neutral stance, ACES is a new Private Military Company specializing in combating supernatural forces and paranormal phenomena. Vampire hunting, werewolf tracking, mage assassination, and demon purification are just some of the more exotic jobs that ACES specializes in (though that last one is a bit of a white elephant). ACES aims to help build a secure future in the face of things that have no ready explanation. Between the vampires and werewolves, there are even more unexplored dangers that seek to manipulate humanity from behind the curtains. Whether to sow chaos or to further their own ends, ACES is the answer to that problem.

For one reason or another, you've been chosen to try out for this new initiative. Forget about nations and homelands; this is a company that holds no allegiance to any flag, and therefor has no binding ties preventing it from setting foot in any country (just about, with the right strings pulled). This could be a new start for you, a clean slate with a fresh outfit. Perhaps you were wanting a new venture in life after Africa's messes just fell apart and mercenary life died off. Maybe you're a disgruntled SOF member who just wants to do some good but can't get past all the bullshit. Whatever your reasons, you were contacted through a lot of back channels or were recommended by people in the know of this new unit to be put on its roster.

Now, there is another question that must be asked that could be the most important one yet: Who are you? Your skillset is just as important as who or what you are. Yes, what. Our world was changed at the beginning of World War 2, when The Masquerade was broken and it was revealed that those old tales of vampires in castles and werewolves in the highlands were actually true. More than that, they were more prevalent than we had ever thought. With that came their inevitable involvement in mundane affairs like war, organized crime, politics, businesses, and humanitarian organizations. There are always new discoveries being brought to light. Perhaps you're a mundane human just wanting to help do some actual good? Or maybe you're sick of the other paranormals giving your kind a bad reputation? These are just the basic concepts seen in ACES contractors, but everyone's different.

From all walks of life, and all kinds of beings, ACES comprises the only entirely autonomous military outfit dedicated to combating supernaturally-inclined terrorist cells currently making our world a living hellfire. Rest assured that you're in good company, but we get paid by the contract. Do well, and we could see bonuses in our future to help better our unit. From better food and beds, to more modern equipment. ACES operates in a need-to-know basis, so you'll be given a proper cover for your absence if you have family. Just remember that what you do today helps keep them safe. If you don't have family, then know your cause is a just one. It will be no easy task, but you aren't here because this is an easy job. You're here because this is a job not many others can do. Take pride, and give 'em hell.

ACES is set in the World on Fire universe. This universe tells an alternate history where supernatural creatures exist in our daily lives and, after the lifting of the Masquerade in WW2, are now well known to most people. Though most of the important events are still intact, there is a lot more yet to be explored. But for now, here's what you're worrying mainly about. ACES is a new under-the-radar PMC focused on combating supernatural forces embedded in terrorist cells causing havoc in the world. The year is 1995, and as the world is ablaze all around the new Russian Federation while the UN tries to assist where it can in Africa, ACES gets its first contract and is gearing up to be deployed to Bosnia and Herzegovina...

- I am the OP and I delegate to my CO-OP Rupudska. Our word is final for everything.
- This RP will touch on harsh topics but is not meant to be a gorn power fantasy. Don't be an edgelord.
- Apping as a supernatural character is fine, but I will be taking every kind on a strict case-by-case basis.
- Be civil in discussions. Play nice or you're out of the sandbox.
- If you have ideas for your character backstory that reach far back into history, please bring them to my attention before going ahead with them so we can work out how to best fit it in.
- RP Samples are optional, but it'd be nice to see your work to gauge what kind of writer you are.
- Rules are subject to updating and changes as I see fit. Hopefully we won't need to do that, though.

Character Creation:
So if you're this far and you're still stumped about what this is going to be like and who you should make for it, then lemme break it down for you Barney style: ACES is a PMC that's like a cross between Team Rainbow and the Hellsing Organization. You're a mercenary, but for a good cause. As stated above, the main kinds of supernatural beings we see most prevalent are vampires, werewolves, witches, and mages. Russia is also still producing individuals with intense psychic powers as well, but there are more out there. Shoot me an idea. The worst I can say is no. Your equipment and gear is entirely at your disposal except for your uniform. BDUs in various new kinds of woodland camo schemes from original to desert, arctic, urban, mountain, and even night colors, will be your issued uniform along with extra pieces or less pieces should the environment call for it.

As for everything else, it's all on your dime. Don't worry, you're getting paid well enough to get some cool shit. Just remember, this is 1995. So while ACES higher-ups have good connections to get weapons for the right price, you're not gonna be running a brand-new Mk18 CQBR. Vests and Load-Bearing gear are also what you'll be running as MOLLE was not around to baby you until after 9/11. The closest you'll get to that is an HRM tactical vest. Psychological Evaluation: "At the barest glance, Applicant Ka'ahumanu appears the stereotypical Hawaiian. A laid back beach bum in a business suit, with some experience in the military that she is, admittedly, proud of, but with little stock or apparent interest in politics, with a day job running a diving supply shop, and a night job as a bodyguard. And indeed, for the most part, she is a fairly laid-back person, who does enjoy her day job and spending time on the beach, or at the gym, or the mountains of her native Oahu, far from civilization - and tourists. And herein is the first evidence that there is more to her than there seems. Applicant Ka'ahumanu is a political animal, and has connections to several Hawaiian Sovereignty organizations, participating regularly in protests - though even she admits she is not very "extreme", believing that an independent Hawaii should at least maintain trade and defense treaties with the United States. She does, however, have a deep-seated disdain for most of the mainlanders she runs into, and more broadly to anyone not from Hawaii. She'll get along with them, but it takes longer than with her fellow islanders second, fellow native Hawaiians first. A helpful sort, all things considered, who has a tendency to help people to her own demerit - a sucker, in a way, in how willing she is to give people the benefit of the doubt the first time, but she can hold a grudge just as easily. Besides that? Her primary interests are astronomy, science fiction, foreign (as in non-American) TV, and virtually anything mechanical - especially weapons. Especially as evidenced by her specialty as a mage."

Background: Nani was born to a roughly lower-middle-class family in Kane'ohe, second of five children. Her parents worked fairly typical, boring desk jobs, or at least as close to typical and boring as it got for mages. Her particular talent for the mechanical notwithstanding, her childhood was equally uninteresting, though in high school she began to grow interested in politics and history - Hawaiian, in regards to both. She didn't go to college (University of Hawai'i) immediately, instead doing a variety of odd jobs once she became 16 - retail associate, babysitter, customer service, waitress, and once she turned 18 she started to take up other jobs - everything from construction worker to stripper, mostly to pay tuition costs herself, since she refused to take her parent's money.

She joined the United States Navy on a whim, though she did well in training. Initially aiming for Machinist's Mate, her interest in weapons led her to strike for Gunner's Mate instead, though this very interest proved concerning for her superiors - she was, after all, by this point well connected with the Hawaiian sovereignty movement, and was believed to have been at several protests when the opportunity arose for her to be in one - in disguise, of course, usually wearing any of several varieties of masks and using basic glamour magic. She was ultimately assigned to the USS John Paul Jones, where she managed to reach Gunner's Mate 2nd Class after a short, but not unusually short, amount of time. By this point, she had largely completed her education at the University of Hawai'i, with a major in political science, and had earned both a diving and diver training license, as well as passing the diver's fitness test for the US Navy - though she showed no real interest in striking for Naval Diver. However, after this point she proved quite incapable of advancing further.

Having her suspicions as to why, she ultimately let her enlistment expire at the age of 24 and began to seek jobs elsewhere.

Background:

I'm the third son, youngest of the bunch, of Clark Harris. You know of him; former Governor of North Carolina, war hero, former Alcatraz prisoner, and everything else. You get different accounts from different people. The US Army reveres him, Vampires despise him, the press likes to make him say wild things on record. Things are complicated between us, almost like we are from different worlds. Actually, come to think of it, the two of us are from different worlds when you really ponder on it."

Talk about being a late bloomer. When I was born, Dad was pushing through his late-fifties and already had his first star, and Mom was in her mid-forties. He wasn't around much in my youth, always out of the country or elsewhere on work, but he made sure that the family was taken care of. We stayed in a nice townhouse in Alexandria, didn't have to worry about moving all over the place on assignments. Mom had used to work at the Department of Labor, but she retired after I was born to raise me. My older brothers, Michael and Paul, were in high school and to be honest, I really didn't get acquainted with them until later - well, Paul and I communicate semi-regularly."

"I grew up like any other normal kid. It was a good childhood; I lived on one of those idyllic picket fence-lined street where big houses and professionally-manicured oak trees towered over the road and sidewalks. For a while, it was just Mom and I. Mike and Paul left in '63 to attend the Academies, and then they went off to Vietnam, where Dad had already been since 1963. On some of those rare occasions where he was home, I could pick up on the kitchen conversations between Mom and Dad. They both disagreed with the war, but Mom couldn't convince Dad to pull weight and have them deployed somewhere away from Indochina. I think he beats himself up for that. Mike was killed in 1968 during a dogfight over Hanoi. After that, he acted. Paul, who was fighting street to street in Hue, immediately was pulled from his unit and reassigned to the Philippines. When it came time for me to graduate high school, I wanted to enlist. Mom and Dad had none of it. Dad had left the Army by then and moved us to Raleigh. The guy was a legend and his word was respected, so he would have had no trouble in getting me disqualified from service. At the very least, he consented for me to join the Army National Guard while attending college."

"I went to NC State, majoring in Criminal Justice. Policework called out to me for some reason. I graduated with my degree and joined the Highway Patrol. Just after I arrived at my first assignment, the Vampire Emergency broke out. Dad was the state governor, and together with the General Assembly, set about approving a whole swath of anti-vampire laws. Statewide registration of all vampires, a ban on human feeding and siring, and - perhaps the most controversial piece of the puzzle - the authorities were given sweeping powers to arrest vampires and to summarily execute them if they posed a threat to public safety. Vampire rights groups vehemently protested the move and staged nightly protests in the major cities. The peace didn't last long. Protesters fought with counter-protesters, and initially, we fought all of them. Fighting vampires in a riot line, holding a shield in front of you as they rush the line - it's terrifying. More often than not, the line gets broken and they would get past. There was a lot of pulling back down the street, and a lot of injured officers. When we were defending the convention center in Greensboro back in '79, one of our guys was pulled into the protesters, and we watched in vain as a gaggle of vampires tore him apart and drank his blood. That's when the shotguns started coming out. Put enough buckshot and slugs into the chest and head of a vampire, and it'll do the same job as a stake and decapitation.

Psychological Evaluation: Just to the point of uncompromising, Estella's iron-clad moral convictions runs counter to the twisted nature of Latin American politics, with an undoubtedly sour opinion of the entire spectrum of Chilean leadership. As such, it is often difficult for her to make morally murky choices. Moreover, her piety and hardline stance towards evil often made it difficult for her to compromise when it came to working with the dirtier aspects of human society, or dealing with demonic non-humans.
Background: Born in a sprawling ranch and estate in the interior of the Andean mountains, Estella had long been committed to a life of virtue. A studious squire in the local chapter of the Order of Santiago, Estella seemed like a girl out of place, viewing virtue through the lens of romanticized chivalry so gravely absent in its contemporary era. But her sheltered life in the local German community betray a secret so open, it was any wonder why the Israeli Kana'im or Siqariyim did not simply storm the estate. The fact that most of the chapter's forefathers, including her own family, were former Ahnenerbe members and supporters of Pinochet's regime disturbed her. The last straw came when her own parents attempted to persuade her to join the underground Nazi remnant organization, Die Spinne. Refusing and fleeing the town at the threat of her life, she soon found herself out of a future and in need of employment.

Psychological Evaluation: Cion can be described as a reserved and slightly introverted person. Slow to anger and can be supportive of others. A generally friendly person that likes to be around people but can be cold to people he dislikes. Cion has a dislike of the British military near the end of his service and for the most part. He does not want to talk about his posting in Northern Ireland. For he does not want to bring up that ugly memory and as the result of being nearly killed by werewolves there. Cion has a fear of werewolves, and he loathes to have to fight them. But, will if need be though he will bring along extra explosives. While he does hold some hate towards supernaturals due to seeing some of the worse they can do in Northern Ireland. Cion only hates those that are violent or at least those that kill innocents. So he can work with a supernatural if needed though he will have problems if he has to work with a werewolf.

Background: Born the eldest of three and on the Isle of Man to a soldier Moris and a teacher Essa. Luckily Cion did not have to move during his father's time in the military but, it meant that he was rarely home. Something that did not bother Cion until he was older. When he wanted to know his father better than what was told of him.

Growing up in Douglas was good and not exciting for him. Not much happened on the sleepy isle outside of the annual car and motorcycle racing races. Which he always enjoyed watching with his family and would grow close with his siblings. It was during the rare times that his father was home that he taught Cion how to shoot. For two reasons, one to spend time with Cion and two, for the family had a history with the military since the first world war. A tradition that excepted Cion to join and one he was ultimately okay with. Despite some initial concerns about it. Though his younger brother who was also expected to join the military, instead chose to follow his own path and be a motorcycle racer. Which caused problems between the two, and yet Cion was fine with his brother's choice.

When he was old enough, Cion enlisted in the military. Starting as a lowly private, Cion would mostly be assigned to quiet posts before being assigned to northern Ireland. During the Troubles in 1991 where Cion would see both human and supernatural actions of violence. Though both the actions of humans and supernaturals disturbed him, it was the actions of the supernaturals that disturbed him the most. IRA aligned mages made magical bombs that destroyed whole buildings. Vampires and werewolves on both sides took advantage of the chaos and attacked each other and humans. Making an already violent conflict even deadlier.

Cion would see his first brush with death during a patrol near Belfast. His squad was ambushed by a clan of IRA werewolves, and they barely fought them off. Most of his squad was dead and him almost among them. Then it was the Cobblestone Pub massacre which a group of Loyalist vampires were allowed to kill an IRA-aligned group in the pub and did not care about the innocent civilians inside. Cion and his squad happened upon the scene after the vampires left, and the site of the aftermath stayed with Cion throughout his time in Northern Ireland.

Cion would eventually be reassigned out of Northern Ireland in 1994, right after the first ceasefire. His time in Northern Ireland left him with a bad taste in his mouth. Not just from the chaos has had seen but what was allowed to happen by the British military. From what he had seen and heard during his time there. He was disgusted by this and wanting nothing to do with the military anymore. So he left, and this caught the ire of his father as he did not approve of him leaving the military. Cion tried to explain his reasons but, his father did not listen, and in the end. A rift between the two and continues to the present day.

Returning back to Douglas, where he got a job as a dock worker. It was the day after seeing his brother compete in the Isle of Man TT that he got a message about an offer to join a private military company called ACES. An offer to join to fight against hostile supernaturals and end what plans they may have. Remember his time during the Troubles and how some supernaturals were able to get away with murder and the damage they caused. It was an easy decision to make, and Cion accepted the offer. Now with the ACES, Cion waits for their first mission and see how his new teammates are like.

"Why should you be a contractor with ACES?": I am a former sergeant of the British army, and I have seven years of military experience. Three of them spent fighting hostile paramilitaries such as the IRA and have experience fighting unconventional conflicts. That and I have experience with dealing and fighting supernaturals. Along with good motivation to bring justice to violent supernaturals.

He does not want to talk about his posting in Northern Ireland. For he does not want to bring up that ugly memory and as the result of being nearly killed by werewolves there. Cion has a fear of werewolves, and he loathes to have to fight them. But, will if need be though he will bring along extra explosives. While he does hold some hate towards supernaturals due to seeing some of the worse they can do in Northern Ireland. Cion only hates those that are violent or at least those that kill innocents. So he can work with a supernatural if needed though he will have problems if he has to work with a werewolf.

Background: Born the eldest of three and on the Isle of Man to a soldier Moris and a teacher Essa. Luckily Cion did not have to move during his father's time in the military but, it meant that he was rarely home. Something that did not bother Cion until he was older. When he wanted to know his father better than what was told of him.

Growing up in Douglas was good and not exciting for him. Not much happened on the sleepy isle outside of the annual car and motorcycle racing races. Which he always enjoyed watching with his family and would grow close with his siblings. It was during the rare times that his father was home that he taught Cion how to shoot. For two reasons, one to spend time with Cion and two, for the family had a history with the military since the first world war. A tradition that excepted Cion to join and one he was ultimately okay with. Despite some initial concerns about it. Though his younger brother who was also expected to join the military, instead chose to follow his own path and be a motorcycle racer. Which caused problems between the two, and yet Cion was fine with his brother's choice.

When he was old enough, Cion enlisted in the military. Starting as a lowly private, Cion would mostly be assigned to quiet posts before being assigned to northern Ireland. During the Troubles in 1991 where Cion would see both human and supernatural actions of violence. Though both the actions of humans and supernaturals disturbed him, it was the actions of the supernaturals that disturbed him the most. IRA aligned mages made magical bombs that destroyed whole buildings. Vampires and werewolves on both sides took advantage of the chaos and attacked each other and humans. Making an already violent conflict even deadlier.

Cion would see his first brush with death during a patrol near Belfast. His squad was ambushed by a clan of IRA werewolves, and they barely fought them off. Most of his squad was dead and him almost among them. Then it was the Cobblestone Pub massacre which a group of Loyalist vampires were allowed to kill an IRA-aligned group in the pub and did not care about the innocent civilians inside. Cion and his squad happened upon the scene after the vampires left, and the site of the aftermath stayed with Cion throughout his time in Northern Ireland.

Cion would eventually be reassigned out of Northern Ireland in 1994, right after the first ceasefire. His time in Northern Ireland left him with a bad taste in his mouth. Not just from the chaos has had seen but what was allowed to happen by the British military. From what he had seen and heard during his time there. He was disgusted by this and wanting nothing to do with the military anymore. So he left, and this caught the ire of his father as he did not approve of him leaving the military. Cion tried to explain his reasons but, his father did not listen, and in the end. A rift between the two and continues to the present day.

Returning back to Douglas, where he got a job as a dock worker. It was the day after seeing his brother compete in the Isle of Man TT that he got a message about an offer to join a private military company called ACES. An offer to join to fight against hostile supernaturals and end what plans they may have. Remember his time during the Troubles and how some supernaturals were able to get away with murder and the damage they caused. It was an easy decision to make, and Cion accepted the offer. Now with the ACES, Cion waits for their first mission and see how his new teammates are like.
