Edward’s parents first met at a scientific conference. His father is a scientist who is respected in his field, though is ultimately unremarkable, having a productive career but no revolutionary breakthroughs. Edward’s mother claimed to be an heiress of some sort, but somewhat estranged from her family. The pair were mutually intrigued, one thing led to another, and they were married with a child shortly after. It was an open secret between them that the background she hailed from wasn't exactly mundane, but out of respect for her privacy Edward's father didn't pry too deeply into it, a state of affairs aided by the fact that her family seemingly wanted little to do with her.
Unfortunately, Edward never got the opportunity to know her in detail. Struck down by illness when Edward was a young child, she left his father to raise him on his own. As he was slightly withdrawn after his wife's death, and trying to balance the needs of a scientific career and being a single father, this resulted in Edward spending much of his childhood with tutors and staff, an upbringing that made him somewhat thoughtful and withdrawn.
Years later, a peculiar letter arrived. Bearing word of a college that neither Edward's father nor his associates had ever heard of, subjects that would hardly seem out of place in a witch's grimoire, and some attribute, some unearthly talent within Edward himself, his father took it upon himself to summon up old memories and half-remembered conversations, and convey to Edward what little he knew of the strange world his mother had called home.
Now facing his heritage, Edward must navigate a world he finds truly unfamiliar, yet that he was always destined to be a part of.
