A Brief History of Man

When primitive man looked up to the night sky, huddled around the protective warmth of his camp fire he saw something that stuck with him. The glittering of the stars as the rose above him, some would be used to help mankind navigate as the species spread across the planet, others would be used to paint pictures that told would tell stories for thousands of generations. He used the stars to tell the seasons, when to plant the crops and when to thank the gods for a good harvest. He never thought that one day his descendants would one day have the courage and means to go past the protective warmth of the planet the he had called home.

But go forth they did, and courage those early explorers of space had in plenty. Strapping themselves into tiny thin skinned vehicles strapped to what would be considered a bomb under any other circumstance the made the first leaps into the inky void that had held mankind's fascination for so long. Those first steps would prove to be an enticing invitation. Soon mankind took began its next greatest exodus, leaving the cradle world for the promise of a new future in the stars. This is unfortunately all that is remembered of those old days. Two millennia have passed since man went off to live amongst that stars he had once looked at around the primordial fire. Few remember the names of those first pioneers. Sure, the great names like Armstrong and Gagarin echo down to us down the centuries, but know one remembers the first martian nor the men and women who terraforemd Venus into a garden world, for those events are closer to the building of the great pyramids than they are to the world of 4,000 AD.

For the last five hundred years Mankind has been ruled over by the Terran Empire, a vast and powerful realm, the largest single polity in the collective history of mankind. Billions live under its banners from the misty jungles of Venus to the icy wastes of Pluto all the out to the farthest frontiers of the mans interstellar holding around alien suns. The Empire has for its entire history been ruled as an autocratic absolute monarchy. Sure there has been the Imperial Senate to give the Emperor a semblance of having the will of the people, but for the most part it has been the iron wills of Earth emperors and empresses that have moved human history. That was until recently. Starting with the reign of the Emperor Magnus the Golden true power has begun to become less and less centralized in the Imperial Throne and more and more invested into the smaller noble houses, senatorial families and corporate concerns. No with the reign of Maximilian IV the Imperial government is a weak and lethargic creature. Wasteful and inefficient it takes weeks for even simple legislation to become enacted as law, infrastructure and welfare projects wade through miles of red tape all while those who control this corrupt mess make sure they are the only ones to benefit from there system.

And now we come to the great cross road of the age. For the Emperor Maximilian IV lays upon his death bed at the age of 105, his son and rightful heir is a vain and lazy man who promises to be much like his father. Out on the frontier the colonies chaif under the rule of a world they no longer see as the homeland, worse yet an alien threat has emerged on the farthest edges of mankind's domain. First contact has proven to be a violent affair, with an unlikely hero holding off the xeno tide. The emperors bastard son Jonathan of Olympus Mons seems to be the only hope the outer worlds has as he commands his tiny force. And so here is where you come in. See, your one of the shakers and movers in the Terran Empire, either a corporate CEO, planetary governor, senator or high ranking member of the Imperial bureaucracy. As the year 4,000 dawns it will be upon your shoulders that the fate of mankind is decided.

The Domain of Man

The territory of man covers nearly every single star within 3 parsecs, within it some 90 billion humans live and work. It is the largest empire to ever exist in human history, with humanity at the most numerous it has ever been. This section will give you information about the most important parts of the Empire starting with the Sol system and working out to the major colonies.

Sol is the mother if Humanity, and is the most populace and richest system in the territory of Humanity. Starting at the closest planet to the sun we have Mercury, used as a prison mining world it is the least populated world in the system, most of the population lives in the maze like mining facilities with the only city on the planet being reserved for the rich and the freemen who work for the mining compnaies as guards. Second from the sun is Venus, thousands of years ago it was the definition of hell. Chocked in a cloud of poison and burning with a temperature hot enough to melt lead it has since been terreformed into a vibrant green world often called the Second Earth, Venus there for acts as the bread basket for the rest of the system. Now on to the throne world itself. Earth, a planet of massive archeology cities housing hundred of millions with vast stretches of wild lands in between. Here is where man was born, here is where his government sits. Mars is the last of the inner planets. A world of industry, factories belch black smoke into the air as manufactured good are pushed out of the massive industrial works. Most martians live in large underground bunker like cities.

The outer system is almost a kingdom unto itself. The belt is still an untamed no mans land as various corporation and noble houses divide the small bodies of the main asteroid belt. Jupiter is home to many world colonized by man, Ganymede acts as the main base for the Imperial Navy. Saturn is collectively a massive tourist trap, millions visit every year to look upon the rings up close. Neptune and Uranus are the second most sparsely populated parts of the system, home mostly to defunct military installations. The Kepler belt is home to pirates and the dregs of humanity, poor cold and uncared for.
Alpha Centuari is a system of 4 worlds. the fourth being a large gas giant around the same size as Neptune. Unlike Neptune this world is within the binary systems Goldy Locks zone and has three habitable moons. These three moons have been ruled by three noble families who have all vied to be the greatest power in the system since the time of Emperor Magnus.
Bernards Star is the second greatest system in the Empire. 10 world, five rocky, two large gas giants and three ice worlds. Unlike Sol two if the rocky worlds are habitable and where home to complex multicellular life when man first came to this star, none of this life was intelligent however.
The third oldest colonized system the system contain now life bearing world, the five planets around Tau Ceti are all rocky and covered in dome cities and mining stations.
The most recently colonized system. UV Ceti has recently been the site of the first major battle between humanity and a non-human intelligence. The single life bearing world in the small three planet system is home to a single city of around 3 million.

The Imperial Senate

Since Emperor Adam Ignus first united the warring states of Sol some 500 years ago there has been a senate. In Adam's time it was just a weak and ineffectual body to make thing appear that the power of the Throne came from the will of the people. For most of its history it was indeed a freely elected body that advised and petitioned the Emperor on behalf of the people. This changed with the reign of Emperor Magnus the Golden. Magnus was never interested in the concerns of state and gave the senate power to actually make choices. This would look to many to have been a wise choice, and it may have worked to the best of the Empire if he also hadnt split the Senate into two groups. The first was the still elected Senate, the second was a new branch of government made up of the nobility and the personal friends of the emperor. To this group was given the most power. From here on out the senate would splinter along the lines of reformers, the new senatorial families, conservatives who want to keep the status quo and the radicals who wish to see the Imperial state dismantaled and humanity return to democracy.
The Noble Houses

Since Emperor Adam there have been titled hereditary houses. Some trace there lines back to the old families of the middle ages, others where rewarded there status because of the merits of there ancestors. All told the noble houses are both a part of the senate and compete against it for power. And as ever there is the constant struggle of one house to become more powerful than the others. Each trying to gain favor with the Emperor, each secretly plotting to take more power from the State. Sol has the greatest concentration of noble houses with most of Earths cities being ruled by one house or another. Venus and Mars are both the properties of noble houses as well as many of the larger objects in the Belt. The goals of the nobility are myriad and often conflicting.
The Corporations

The corporations, mining concerns and colonial companies. These perhaps have the most to lose and most to gain in this uncertain time. Should the current system fall there is a risk that there noble benefactors may fall, that worlds may break free and monetary systems lose value and economic ruin comes. But there is also money to be made off the suffering of others. The military always is looking for more material and if a civil war should break out there will be more than enough customers.

Interesting setting! Just some questions that popped into my head:

- how does interstellar travel work? It looks like there has to be some kind of ftl to facilitate the links between the different star systems, but is ftl used within a system? Seems like the outer regions of Sol feel 'further' than other star systems in some ways.

- how independent are the noble houses from the throne? Could they be thought of as 'vassals' in some ways? Am just thinking why the Empire would maintain a powerful military without a large external threat prior to the arrival of the aliens.

So, FTL is basically just going to use gravitational warping and can't be used within the gravity well of a large body. The noble houses are basically vassels at this point and barely held in check by the Imperial military. If there are wierd things in the op, I am sorry, I was pretty tired when I wrote it and am currently with out power so it phone posts for the foreseeable future.

I am all for people adding stuff, the information in the OP should be treated as a guideline, want to add colonies and stuff around other stars on the map go for it.

Markus Tagrin Sirius III, 2nd Chair of the Council of Sirius

Postby Kassaran » Tue Jul 27, 2021 3:18 pm

Imperial Census

Image
Name: Markus Tagrin Sirius III
Age: 59
Place of Birth: Sirius Primus Orbital Collective, Station 5
Appearance:A typical Sirian, he retains much of the shorter, stout body structure, combined with dark skin tones that contrast with his greying hair. His facial structure is sharp and angular, as many of those within the Sirius noble households are.
Occupation: Second Chair of the Council of Sirius, a representative body of legislators that maintain semi-sovereign rights for administrating over the reportedly scarce resources of the Sirius Star system.

Base of Power:
Sirius, is the brightest star system in Earth's night sky. When settled almost a millennia ago, a prospector came searching for another mining claim, but found something that would change their lives forever. Marlyn Tagrin, the founder and first owner of the stars of Sirius, discovered vast fields of precious metal. Scattered and arrayed in thin rings of dust and debris. Within his lifetime, he had built one of the most powerful mining conglomerates seen.

After his death, the system was passed down to his family, and there it has been held since. Governed by his descendants in the secretive Council of Sirius, it represents one of the few non-democratic and self-governing bodies within the Empire. For nearly a thousand years, Chairmen and Chariwomen of the Council of Sirius have seen to the effectual implementation of many cutting-edge technologies.

When the first Emperor sought support for the unification of Humanity, he found the support of the Council, whom lent him considerable treasure to wage his wars. For their loyalty, they were rewarded with a semblance of self-governance, and with the right payments of Tribute since, they have remained as such. An massive industrial colony, the Sirius system represents nearly seven-and-a-half billion Humans across their interstellar mining and resource extraction hubs. Likewise the vast shipyards and trade fleets of Sirius patrol even the far reaches of Humanity, flying the flag of the Empire, but paying with the coin of Sirius.

Recognizing the ineffectual Imperial Senate for the corrupt morass if has become, the Council of Sirius have given the order to the Second Chair, offer the support of the Dog Star coffers to the bastard son of the Emperor. Assigned to one of the Sirius system's most decorated treasure and trading fleets, Markus Tagrin Sirius III readies himself for the vast trip across space to find the favored Heir to the Empire, and bring about the will of Sirius.

Goals: As he readies himself to depart for the far-flung reaches of Humanity's colonies, he has been instructed to achieve three tasks. The first, is as he was sworn to in receiving his position as the Second Chair, to maintain the strength, nobility, honor, and sovereignty of Sirius. The second, to obtain the loyalty, aid, and favor of the Bastard Prince, to serve as his loyal retainer and earn in kind his trust and promise to retain the Sirius system's status within the Royal household. The third, to assess and report on the threat posed by the xenos, to engage them in battle across all domains and assess the extent of their warfaring capabilities. To bring them to heel or destroy them entirely. Such as in all things, this is the Will of Sirius.

This still got a ways to go before its finished but for now here's the start of my app for Priscia, the youngest daughter of the ruling family of Lacaille 9352. After most of her families death in a starship crash, she is forced into the position of ruling her home system and leading them through the coming dark times and possible collapse of the Empire, despite never having been prepared for the position.

Imperial Census

Name: Governess Priscia of House Palleleus
Age: 26 Earth Years, 13 Desaphioa Years
Place of Birth: Royal Palace, city of Ameriscu, Desaphioa.
Appearance: The Accidental Governess
Occupation: Governess of Desaphoria and the Greater System of Lacaille 9352

Base of Power: Lacaille 9352

Lacaille 9352 has been inhabited by humans for nearly 1500 years, its first settlers being those who wished to forge a new path away from the corruption and overreaching governments of Old Earth. Scouting out the planets of Lacaille 9352, they set out aboard the great colony ship Destiny Arrival for their new homes.

PLANETS OF LACAILLE 9352
Lacaille 9352b/Paneasori (Closest planet to the star, and the most resource rich. It is a super earth with very little surface water, and the most amount of resources in the system. The people of Paneasori are hardy and rugged, living a harsh lifestyle on a harsh planet. Most settlements are built in domes over important mineral deposits or water sources, while there are a few further to the northern and southern hemispheres which are cool enough where the domes are not required for long term survival. Banditry and crime are particularly noticeable issues on Paneasori, where conflicts over mining and water rights run rampant. Paneasory is located along the edge of the Goldilocks zone, and if it was not for the efforts to make it at least somewhat livable, it would be a wasteland even more barren than it already is. Paneasori has two moons.)

Lacaille 9352c/Valliane (Valliane is the second planet from the star, and super earth like its cousin Paneasori, it is a warm planet, but nearly as barren as Paneasori is. Though the closer one is to the equator the less vegetation there is (with pretty much every equatorial region being vast dunes) the further north or south one goes the more life can be found, often times somewhat Mediterranean in climate, though near the poles it is even rather temperate, with snowy moonlit winters and warm breezy summers. The people of Valliane are famously skilled traders, often being the go betweens with their neighbors on Paneasori and Desaphioa. They are also quite agrarian, taking advantage of the warmth and the climate diversity to grow a variety of crops naturally rather than hydroponically, both local crops and those from elsewhere that were compatible with the native soil. Most famously however, Valliane is home to the Order Of The Red Hand, who were the first inhabitants of Valliane after they were expelled from Desaphioa. Valliane has four moons.)

Lacaille 9352d/Desaphioa (Desaphioa is the third furthest planet from the star, and is the capitol of the systems government. It, unlike its sister planets which sit closer to their sun, sits near the very outer edge of the Goldilocks zone, making it a chilly and frigid world. However, unlike the other planets which are both super earths, Desaphioa is a much more earth like planet and was therefore chosen as the first planet to be colonized in Lacaille 9352. Unlike earth however it is much more watery. Without plate tectonics, not as many large mountains and valleys formed, leading to its water to pool in many massive oceans, lakes and marshlands. It nonetheless has the largest population, the colony ship that carried them to the planet having been used to build their first city around, and since then the planet has become more industrialized, taking the resources mined from Paneasori and refining them for sale, as well as being the center of many companies and corporations native to Lacaille 9352. Aside from housing the palace of House Palleleus, the current ruling house, it is also home to the famous Order Of The Black And White in their many monasteries. Desaphioa has two moons and a large planetary ring.)

FACTIONS OF LACAILLE 9352
The Order Of The Red Hand (The Order Of The Red Hand is a monastic, military order, sworn to protect the people of Lacaille from any threats, both outside and within. Of all the many militant groups who exist in the system, the Red Hand is easily the largest and most well respected. Those who join sign on for a period of ten years, and spend their days working to build infrastructure, provide food and medicine, and most importantly, hunt down those who would do harm to the populace. They have a long standing rivalry with the ruling Houses of Lacaille 9352, after they were banished from Desaphoria at the end of a three year conflict over who would rule the system. Like most in the system, they are believers in the major religion of Lacaille, The Church Of The Many Named God, and in particular worshipers of Heshua, the god of light and fairness.)

The Order Of The Black And White (The Order Of The Black And White initially were the ones who would perform funeral rights and burials. Over time, they began to form their own religion and customs, and their activities began to shift more and more, until they were a shadowing group of assassins, who would carry out contracts for those who payed them and take in children to be raised in their order as fellow killers and thieves for hire. They worship the god of pain and suffering, Chaeros, and believe that it is their duty to fairly dish out suffering little by little, lest their god no longer be able to contain all of the chaos of the universe and destroy all that humanity has built. In recent years, they have made more and more treaties with the Houses, especially on Desaphoria. So long as they do not harm citizenry governed by those who they are allied with, they may be allowed to continue their existence. In response, they have begun to take many contracts from the Houses themselves, and in particular House Palleleus, for actions outside of the system, spying and manipulating, and reporting their findings back to the Palleleus.)

The Lacaille Guard (The Lacaille Guard are the loyal guards of the Royal Palace. They swear fealty to no house, no planet, no system, only the White Palace, where the rulers of the system stay and lead from. It is their duty to protect all who reside or visit, and they are fanatical in their devotion. Most come from long lines of Guardsmen, and have served the Palace all their lives, watching over it and its inhabitants for hundreds of years. While the Red Hand is the largest military force in the system, the Guardsmen are easily the most skilled and well trained.)

The Order Of Pathfinders (The Order Of Pathfinders are scouts, explorers, scientists and any other brave enough to venture into the unknown with them. It was the Pathfinders who first mapped the planets of the System, as well as who marked many of the most promising locations for settlement. Currently, they have been engaged in mapping the asteroids and stellar bodies of their system, and have also begun searching for planets outside of the Human territories which may be possible choices for future colonization and exploration, not only for the people of Lacaille 9352, but for all of humanity at large.)

The Knights Of St Kerazim (St Kerazim, who's full name was Valentin Kerazim, was the namesake of House Kerazim and one of the greatest rivals of House Paelleleus for the rulership of Lacaille 9352 before it was united. In the early wars on and around Desaphioa, they were one of the greatest rivals to House Paelleleus, and still are, though through more subtle methods in the modern period. After the war, all military forces on Desaphioa besides those under the control of House Paelleleus were outlawed. In response, many of the former soldiers of Valentin Kerazim fled off world, predominantly to the moons of Vaillane, where they formed the Knights Of St Kerazim. While not officially under the command of House Kerazim anymore, many of House Kerazims younger sons and daughters, who have to chance of inheriting any titles, join the Knights, and much of its command is made up of members of House Kerazim. Effectively, this has allowed to House Kerazim to maintain their military might without breaking any laws and risking the wrath of other military forces, both within the system and beyond.)

The Doctors Guild (All doctors in the system are members of the Doctors Guild. Their colleges train doctors, their leadership decides who needs their aid the most, and through their efforts they aim to greatly improve the health and safety of all citizens of the System. In order to become a doctor in Lacaille 9352, a person must attend their colleges and obtain a degree from the Guild, which is then filed by the government and House Paelleleus on Desaphioa. Additionally, they work very closely with the Red Hand, who protects them on the dangerous world of Paneasori, where they work heavily, and who work to distribute medicine where the Doctors Guild is unable to reach.)

House Kerazim (Rivals to Paelleleus, operate many mining facilities on Paneasori, make their home in the cold northern reaches of Desaphioa.)

House Fullier (Allies to Paelleleus, long and storied military tradition both within the Empires military and the many military orders of the system. Famous for the pilot schools they operate, and it is believed that Fullier has the greatest shipyards in the system, located across the vast deserts near the equator of Valliane.)

House Allendrale (
House Hadristi
House Kurosayo
RELIGION OF LACAILLE 9352
Lacaille 9352 is home to a local religion, which arose from the mixture of the many different belief systems and ideologies of the first colonists who came to the system. While the original names of the individual gods who would become the pantheon of the system are largely forgotten, their legacies live on in the many cults and beliefs surrounding this new pantheon.

Heshua: God of light and fairness.
Chaeros: God of pain, suffering and chaos.

Occupation Director of the Imperial Museum for Xenobiology and its Institute, Head of the Secretariat for Xenobiology (part of the Ministry of Terraforming), Senator, Grand Master of the Artemic Order of Hunters Imperial, Duke of Europa

Base of Power:Corinthius has a great many connections within the Imperial Bureaucracy, following his years of work there, and is well-known and respected within the scientific community. The Huevon dynasty is wealthy, too, and Corinthius is often-seen in the noble social circles, in which he moves graciously. His influence within the Ministry of Terraforming, as well as his leadership of the Xenobiology Secretariat, add to his influence within the Empire.
Goals: Corinthius is currently in a crisis of faith. He is a full-blooded imperial loyalist, who would serve the Empire in all her endeavours. However, the emperors have grown weaker and weaker, and there will come a time when he must choose between his many interests; himself, the Empire, or his science.
The name's James. James Usari. Well, my name is not actually James Usari, so don't bother actually looking it up, but it'll do for now.

When they landed, the Destiny Arrival became the basis for their first city in the system, eventually forming into First Fall City, while those who would one day become House Kerazim set off into the wilderness to form their own society, eventually building the city of Kalliope. During this time, the many factions and groups in and around the Destiny Arrival and First Fall City began to clamor for increasing power, wanting to be the new leaders. Seeing this, a militant order who had begun policing the roads around other settlements and smaller cities, as well as fighting bandits and raiders, began to get involved as well. The Order Of The Red Hand as they called themselves came to First Fall City and began trying to police its streets, but the factions who already lived there saw them as interlopers, and increasingly fought back, until eventually full scale war began, the Red Hand versus First Fall Cities major families, while they simultaneously fought among themselves as well. Seeing the chaos back in First Fall, the people of Kalliope, now largely under the rulership of the Kerazim family, took their own opportunity and gathered their own armies, heading southwards and joining the war in the hopes of taking First Fall as their own and wiping out their greatest rivals, the Red Hand.

As all of this happened, a small family, living in the small city of Ameriscu, began to work and scheme their way around the edges of this war. They were the Paelleleus, a family more known for scholarly pursuits and their patronage of the arts than adventure and war. But they were educated and clever, and understood the defining principle of "divide and conquer." They made contact with the Order Of The Black And White hiding away in their monasteries, and hired out their services, using them as spies and assassins, monitoring the war around First Fall. Additionally, they made contact with the Fullier's, who had a sizable fleet in their service, but had so far stayed out of the war. Promising mutual defense, Paelleleus brokered an alliance with Fullier, and using their hired assassins from the Black And White, they began to poke and prod, tricking and killing those who fought for First Fall, driving the wedges deeper and deeper in their trust until finally there was no more alliance. Instead, it was now the bickering and squabbling families of First Fall who were trampled beneath the boots of the Red Hand and the Kerazims. When the Kerazims had largely captured the city and driven the Red Hand back, they turned their sights on the last major threats to them on the planet, Paelleleus and Fullier, with their sizable army and impressive fleet of warships. When they demanded tribute, Paelleleus refused, and when they attacked, they were met with swift retribution, the power of Fulliers fleet hammering Kerazim into the dirt and allowing the Red Hand to regain their strength while Kerazim was distracted with the greater threat of Paelleleus and Fullier. When the Red Hand attacked, Kerazim collapsed, and were forced to retreat back to their old homes. Using their same tricks as before, Paelleleus and Fullier were able to march on First Fall City, and extended a treaty to the Houses their. Join their side and together they could defeat the Red Hand, or ignore them and be conquered. First Fall took the first option, joining Paelleleus's alliance and fighting against the Red Hand.

By the wars end, a small, insignificant House had united the major factions of Desephiora, and ended a period of conflict and terror. Maintaining their contracts with the Black And White, Paelleleus now had an impressive information network. Their alliance with Fullier gave them access to the largest and most powerful fleet in the system, and their position at the center of the newfound peace gave them significant political sway over their fellow Great Houses, as they had now become known. Their first actions after the war only further solidified their position. The Red Hand was banished from Desephiora, and an organized military was formed. Paelleleus and their descendants became the first major leaders of their army, while Fullier became the first leaders of their navy. Kerazim, meanwhile, not long after retreated largely to an orbital fortress, known as Castle Station, while what was left of their armies retreated to the moons of Valliane, following after the Red Hand. There, they formed the Knights Of St Kerazim, a group who was not ostensibly under the control of House Kerazim, but who's leadership was largely made up of the younger children of the House.

A period of prosperity and expansion onto Valliane began after this, as many of the Great Houses saw more opportunity on the sunny and fertile new world. Finding the Red Hand still there, operating their monasteries in the mountains and hills, various treaties were made. The Red Hand would patrol the planet and keep it safe, and in return, they would be payed by all who benefited from their work. This was suitable, and over time, the Red Hand was slowly integrated back into society, being considered righteous defenders of the people before long. It was during this time that the Terran Empire came, ending the period of independence the worlds of humanity had enjoyed until now. House Paelleleus and the Great Houses gathered as foreign ships arrived at the edges of their system, and twisted the ultimatum given to them against their would be conquerers. The Terrans had said, "we bring peace and prosperity to you," to which the Desephioans said, "we have peace and prosperity already. Allow us to live as we have and tribute and markets will be open to you. But if you try to force us to be like you, we will fight you to the last, and you will be forced to destroy the further prosperity our system could bring your Empire."

The Terrans agreed to these terms. Lacaille 9352 would be allowed to live as they had for the past 1500 years, existing as their own society and culture. And in return, they would give tribute to the Terrans every year, and the markets of the wealthy system would be open to the entire Terran Empire. Yes, the Desephioans have representatives in the senate and do trade extensively, and a large part of their taxes goes to the Terrans. But they largely exist in their own little bubble, living under their own laws and traditions, and always ready to force the Terrans to destroy the prosperity they bring the Empire should their ways ever be questioned. In many ways they have come to exist more as a vassal state than a member, and for this reason, they have become known as the "Little Empire" to many outside of Lacaille 9352.

Now, in the year 4000, the Empire is weak, and the clever minds of House Paelleleus are watching closely. The first contact with alien life has occurred and ended in a battle at UC Ceti. Lacaille 9352 is hardly a parsec away, and Lacaille could easily be next. The Emperor has died, and it seems a succession crisis could be in order, as the popularity of his bastard son fighting the xenos in UV Ceti could threaten the balance and safety of whatever legitimate emperor is chosen. Other systems and groups already seem to be making their own moves to protect their interests. And worst of all, the ruling family has died. The last governor, Hestor III, his wife, two eldest sons and eldest daughter were all killed after a malfunction in a ships engine caused a catastrophic explosion and venting of atmosphere. The only heir left was his youngest daughter, Priscia, who though intelligent and clever was never expected to become Governess, and was therefore never taught to be one. Meanwhile, the other Houses circle around her, trying to decide weather they will stand with her, or attempt to manipulate her for their own gains, or even overthrow her. And Priscia has been left with the seemingly impossible task of uniting these disparate groups into one once again, to prepare for the dark times that are sure to be ahead. Will Lacaille 9352's long and proud history continue on, its traditions of honor and heroism standing intact? Or will this prove to be the end of the once brave system of explorers and soldiers, sat so carefully on the edge of the unknown?

House Kerazim (When the first colonists arrived, those who would become House Kerazim were the first to venture out into the wilderness, building their own city in the trees of the planets north. As society in the system began to form and congregate, their skill and knowledge in survival had created a far more militant society then their contemporaries. Eventually, their greatest rivals, House Paelleleus had come to power through networking with other factions, and along with the Red Hand and other smaller factions, war broke out over who would rule the system. House Kerazim and their leader, St Kerazim, lost the war, and retreated to their orbital home Castle Station. Since then, with the opening of the mining market in Paneasori, they have been some of the first to seize upon its opportunities. Along with hiring out their own private military in the Knights Of St Kerazim, and the people of House Kerazim have managed to maintain their position as the most militarized and most feared of the systems Great Houses.)

House Fullier (Fullier were pilots, almost from the start, and were good at it too. Though their ancestral home is located on Desaphioa, they have increasingly been shifting to Valliane, where the skies are clearer and there is more space to build. They have operated many flying schools and interstellar trading/shipping operations ever since colonization of other planets has begun, and operate a large armed fleet. While Kerazim controls the ground, Fullier controls the skies. Combined with a long standing alliance with Paelleleus, vast shipbuilding yards located across the deserts of Vallianes equator and in its orbit, and strong military tradition in the Empires navy, they have established a rather adventurous and exciting reputation. As well as a reputation for loyalty, always having stood with House Paelleleus, and keeping the rivals of this alliance in check through threat of orbital bombardment.)

House Allendrale (House Allendrale were farmers, some of the first to follow the Red Hand to Valliane, and have controlled vast swaths of land ever since. Their hold on the systems breadbaskets is steadfast, holding a near monopoly in food production. Though they are not the most militarily powerful house, they hold incredible economic sway due to feeding so many people. Recently, they have become embroiled in a simmering rivalry with House Kurosayo, who have begun to build vast hydroponics labs across the chilly expanses of Desaphioa and rival their chokehold on system food supply.)

House Hadristi (House Hadristi was the first to make their home on Paneasori, building a vast domed series of settlements on its northern pole. Their goals were clear, and their goals were successful. They had a semi successful banking operation on Valliane, which they ran from Desaphioa, but they wanted more direct control and privacy. Taking their wealth they moved to Paneasori, and set up a vast banking empire from their new home, working closely with House Kerazim for their defense. Since the lawless state of Paneasori has grown with its population, there have been several attempts on their compound, Northern Beauty. But, with the vast coffers they have amassed, the Knights Of St Kerazim are unlikely to abandon their posts anytime soon. And the raiders of Paneasori have long since learned to fear the guns of Northern Beauty. It is safe to say that, the money of Lacaille 9352 is safe in the hands of House Hadristi and their banking conglomerates.)

House Kurosayo (House Kurasayo initially were the family of the Destiny Arrivals engineering crew, and made their home in the city that grew out of the great ship, First Fall City. With their skills in engineering and technical abilities, it did not take long for them to become a very influential family, not long after becoming the first of the Great Houses. Alongside keeping the lights on in First Fall City, they also provided much of the food for the city, using the ancient ships hydroponics labs to feed their citizens. As House Allandrale has increased its chokehold on food production for much of the rest of the system, House Kurosayo saw an opportunity, one which they were quick to jump on. Using their knowledge of hydroponics, they have begun to aggressively expand, building station in orbit around Desaphiora with the sole purpose of food production, and aggressively marketing this to the people of Desaphiora and Paneasori, looking to force their rivals in House Allendrale out of the game.)

Factory owners and hydroponics farmers, increasingly diversifying into the sciences.

I'm interested in this, but I have a few questions:

- How old is the emperor's son?
- Does he have any other established notable relatives outside of his son and his illegitimate son?
- Is there a functional imperial court? If so, what would be the best modern comparison for how court life looks?

Thanks in advance!

The Bastard is 38 and the legitimate son is 30.
He probably does have plenty of ties to the noble houses of Earth, Mars, and Venus. I haven't gone into any detail about these houses but if you want to make a house related to the Imperial House.
Currently the court is just a constant social event with the Emperor surrounding himself with the rich and powerful. It is mostly these powerful individuals that actually have been doing the ruling since the Emperor has taken ill.

Am considering throwing together either a semi-nomadic faction in the outer solar system, or a Titan that looms as something of a local hegemon within the Saturnian system. I wanted to run a few questions by y'all though while I'm still debating with myself over the details!

Would a faction that was a major supplier of the fuel needed for interstellar travel ('hyperfuel' or somesuch), and therefore leverages a good deal of influence in interstellar trade, be reasonable?

Alternatively, would it be unbalanced to say that a faction plays host to one of the Empire's largest shipyards and has a reputation for ship design?

In terms of more fluffy-details, thought about going for either for a somewhat dogmatic, religious noble house, or one focused on mercantile trade. But I wanted to check if either of those (or any of the above for that matter!) would conflict with what anyone else is hoping to go for.
