Corrupt Dictatorship

Final Application

Postby Benuty » Thu Jun 17, 2021 10:57 pm

Full Nation Name : The Golden State of the Rus.
Majority/Official Culture : A Polyglot identity based on the Rus' cultures' hybridization and the Turkic Tribes in the south.
Territorial Core : The territory is shown in the reserved map.
Territorial Claim : The vast expanses of Siberia.
Capital City : Sarai.
Population : Forty five Million.

Government Type : Semi-elective monarchy.
Government Ideology/Policies : Preservation of the Nation, Industrialization, and Social Cohesion.
Government Focus : Cultural Hegemony, and Imperial Preservation
Head of State : The Khagan/Golden Emperor Abd Al-Ahan Khan
Head of Government : High Prince of the Rus Leon Trotsky
Government Description : A union state combined the former arrangement of the Golden Horde in the south and its former tributary states in the north. Reforms made for the sake of necessity have concentrated the polyglot identity of the nation into three power blocs. The city-states of the Rus are lead by princes who pay tributary taxes of money, and crops while engaging in their own level of representation via the Thing (a holdover from their Norse heritage). The Kurultai serves its capacity as the legislature of the Bolgars, Mongols, and Khazars. Then of course there is the princely council which serves as a general advisory body. There is also an independent judiciary for the entire nation as well. The Khagan/Golden Emperor is chosen by election through the Kurultai and has to often deal with the imperial court, bureaucracy, and sometimes the kurultai itself if they hope to not only reform but sustain the system.

Majority/State Religion : Sojournism.
Religious Description : Sojournism: The Non-Karaite counter to Rabbinic Judaism.

Whereas Samaritans limit themselves to the first five books of Moses, and Karaites claim extra-biblical interpretation to not be valid, the Sojourners raises the third point. That Moses (if he existed) was wrong, and all one has to do is look at the wastrels of the former land of Judea. The Sojourners base their name on Abraham who sojourned from his lands on the orders of God to give birth to a whole host of peoples, places, and things. They don't believe in Moses, the judges, the prophets, and the kings nor do they claim Jerusalem as their holy site to be headed by a high priest, and a temple. Canaan is their holy land, but for now, they are "in Egypt" awaiting the day God will ordain the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to come forth from every corner, and set up their tents.

The holy text of the Sojourners is Genesis divided into twelve portions as per the old Torah cycle readings. Each of their months is named after an event of some significance in the text. Sections are read over the months with the year starting again when it comes time to read about the creation of the world. The calenders end with the death of Joseph, and the descendants of Abraham awaiting in Egypt for the time to be right. The faith of the sojourners is a monotheistic faith centered on the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob a being who is able to be known, and who walks on the earth with his angels. Worship is held in tents, and gardens and the faith view marriage in the context of bigamous (just as Jacob married Rachel and Leah) or allowing concubines (Abraham with Hagar).

Animal sacrifice is conducted following a ceremony reading God's test of Abraham over his son Jacob. Young men reach maturity in a ritual where they seek their father's blessings. People are circumcized within the faith as well, and the religion is more than willing to allow vengeance in cases of rape ( such as when the brothers of Dinah exacted vengeance upon their sisters rapists). Yet like Jacob, and Esau it also encourages proper forgiveness, to not lie (the birthright deception), to not murder (Cain and Abel or deceive (as josephs brothers did to their father).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_G ... of_Genesis

In regards to the Jewish connection essentially the Khazars survived rather than be destroyed, and were able to assimilate the polytheistic Rus, and eventually, the Golden Horde ended up converting to Judaism. The Sojournist branch is as much a take on the Mongol traditions as it is an attempt at genuine theology. Jerusalem is in the hands of tritheistic idolaters (Christians), and there is no Messiah coming to liberate Jews. God will act when he sees fit.

Economic Ideologies : Mixed Economy with bickering between the imperial government, reformers, and traditionalists in the east.

Major Production : Copper, Bauxite, Nickel, Petroleum, Agricultural Products, Fishing, Coal, Gold, and other minerals.

Economic Description : Different areas of the country have vested themselves into different areas of economics. The port principalities cling to trading, and merchants while the interior Rus states prioritize agriculture. The heartland where Sarai is located is a polar opposite to the horde areas. Modern and industrialized clash with the horde areas that are sprawling with forests, and lands for grazing. Several noted bands raid the Siberian for spouses, resources, and anything not nailed down.

Development: Semi-Industrialized.
Development Description : The economic development of the Golden State is highly mixed, to say the least. Novograd, for example, is highly industrialized compared to some of the other Rus principalities which have an agrarian-based economy. The lands of the Sarai area are modernized by western definitions yet go to the east and witness life as the wild west. It's at a crossroads between modernizing and being traditional to put it lightly.

Army Description : Organized via the Golden Writ with Mongolian, Indian, and Persian Tactics these days its assigned as an actual army rather than an excuse to raid, pillage, and conquer. However, there is debate over the direction of the army. Some want a fast, and mobile army while others merely want a defensive one.
Army Weakness : Internally squabbling amongst commanders, ethnic divisions, and the question over what to do with the frontier areas prevent this from being a well-oiled machine. The Golden State desires an efficient army but will have to solve these problems first.
Naval Description : Multiple fleets of varying precision, and skill with a primary focus on defensive military stances, combating piracy, and the enlistment of private merchant fleets
Naval Weakness : The decentralized nature of naval forces has for lack of a better word established several navies who report to different areas. The imperial navy located in the Caspian, and baltic is the only officially controlled government force. Meanwhile, Novgorod pretty much has their own private navies and assist the imperial fleet in matters of piracy. For all intents and purposes, the fleet of the east is privately owned by mercantile interests operating out of the western ports.
Further Military Description : There is disunity amongst the imperial command about the definition that should make up core doctrine for a new, and united military.

National Goals : 1) Revitalization vs Tradition 2) Reform vs Stagnancy 3) A Future vs being stuck in the past.
National Issues : 1) Industrialization needs to be uniformly enforced amongst the various regions, but local autonomy prevents such imperial overreach. As a result, the farther you get from the imperial territory, and the Rus heartland the more agrarian, and nomadic the commonwealth is. The very system which allows Sarai to profit by taxing its principalities to the north have ironically weakened it in other ways. In order to keep the various princes happy or distracted, the golden emperors/khagans over the past have granted them boons, privileges, and kept them bickering over one another.

2) Consolidation of an effective national identity, and government.
National Figures of Interest :
1) Leo Tolstoy: An agrarian, and monastic figure who promotes a pacificist state.

2) Leon Trotsky: Beliefs in the reformation of the Golden State into a Eurasian-styled state following mass democracy, acceptance of multiracial makeup, and a form of collectivism that promotes gradual change in society.

3) Golden Emperor/Khagan: The current holder of the title is Abd Al-Ahad Khan. He is a stern reformist and a no-nonsense ruler from the southern fringes of the imperial heartland. Elected from the Kurultai as a military, and the administrative candidate he will see the commonwealth to greatness before passing from this world.

4) Vladimir Lenin: A radical collectivist who wants to turn the Golden State into a state of perpetual revolution where everyone, and everything is a part of a proletarian dictatorship arranged by the military. The society of his ideal state will be arranged by perpetual warfare, perpetual indoctrination, perpetual nationalism, and perpetual revolution (the four goals). Mankind will build itself a god based on revolutionary virtues, and the executions will continue until the revolution finally has achieved its goals of liberating mankind.

National Ambition/Aspirations : Reformation into a federal structure, and clear definition of the various estates, and branches of power.

History :

Age of the Khazars (650-969)

Pre-Mongol Times (969-1206)

United Mongolian Empire (1206-1227)

Genghis Khan's imperial ambitions in China would not see much success despite him spending much of his life in an attempt to conquer it. Regardless the Mongolians did expand outwards at a rapid pace like no other.

[1211]: Genghis Khan ravages western Xia, but one of his commanders overzealous in their actions attacks a town belonging to the Song dynasty. Following the massacre, the Song proceeded to break off diplomatic relations with the Mongolians.

[1214-1215]: The defeat of Genghis Khan at the infamous battle of Yinchuan by the combined might of Jin, and Song put an end to Genghis and his ambitions in China for the rest of his life. Historians argue that had the battle gone the other way China very well may have begun to fall.

[1217-1221] Genghis Khan begins a campaign into the lands bordering the various states of the Rus, and by 1221 nearly borders them entirely.

[1227]: The Khagan is struck dead during a battle against the Bolgars inhabiting near the Volga river. Despite winning the battle that day the offensive is stalled in part due to the necessity of arranging a kurultai to elect a new Khagan.

The Mongolian Empire Cracks (1228-1267)

[1228] Batu Khan is appointed over the far reaches of the western portions of Genghis Khan's empire.

[1236] The Bolgars on the Volga river fall in part due to the efforts of Batu Khan. He rests for the remainder of the year before beginning an offensive into the Rus.

[1237-1242] Batu Khan's conquest of the Rus states is incredibly bloody and violent with hundreds of thousands being put to the sword, and several cities burned to the ground. Batu Khan began to turn his attention to Europe even going so far as to sack several polish towns, and cities before falling strangely ill.

[1256] The reign of Sartaq Khan while incredibly short does bring one incredible change, and that is the sponsorship of Judaism as a state religion after a series of engagements with wandering mystics.

[1267] Khan Khaishan who is ruling in Mongolia goes against the advice of other Mongol rulers and launches an attack on Jin dynasty lands in China. While the dynasty pushes back the Mongols. The dynasty still is heavily devastated from the raids, but this proves to be the last straw as the other major Mongol rulers separate from Mongolia.

The Golden Horde, and the World [1267-1359]

[1274] The first attempt by Kublai Khan of Mongolia to invade Japan.

[1281] A second attempt by Kublai Khan of Mongolia to invade Japan.

[1281-1312] As the authority of the old Mongol heartland began to decline especially in the face of Kublai Khan's repeated failures to expand into China or Japan the Golden Horde began to look west rather than east. During this time the Khans of the Golden Horde earn the moniker of "Patriarchs" like more, and more Mongolians listen to them and flock to their banners to ring in conquest after conquest. A division in the Jewish presence began to occur with some scholars claiming that the Torah hadn't been written by Moses. The truth could only be found in the first book of Genesis, and that the "mosaic invention" could be debunked by simply looked at the state of Jerusalem.

[1313-1341] Reign of Uzbeg Khan: This khan allowed visitation by Buddhist lamas and Tengrist Mongols from the old homeland. The Golden Horde under Uzbeg saw a flourishing of trade especially with merchants from the port cities of the Romans, and the land trade brought from Persia. Sarai exploded in growth from all this trade with a grand synagogue being built in the center of the city as well as libraries, and markets. Uzbeg listened to the rabbinical complaints concerning the state of the serfs, and issue commands to reform the system. During his reign it is stated that 300,000 men were in the military at one point.

[1342–1357] Reign of Jani Beg Khan: Following a short dynastic war with his brothers Jani Beg the son of Uzbeg Khan firmly cemented his power. His policy of actively interfering the politics of the Rus tributary states would ultimately come to backfire on him. Some historians think during a siege he used catapults to launch dead body parts into a city as part of a terror campaign. This is believed to have spread the great black death across Europe whether intentional or not.

Centuries of Trouble [1359-1480]

[1359-1381] The various states of the Rus attempt to form coalitions in several phases in an attempt to drive out the Golden Horde. By the 1370s they eventually succeeded if only for a short time as the Golden Horde assembled an army to reclaim the area.

[1381-1419] The Golden Horde would reclaim the Rus by blood, and in one infamous example, they tricked the Muscovites into surrendering on false promises. The commanders ordered the slaughter of the city. While the resistance by the Rus was put down the political leadership was unstable, and despite the reunification, the country was hardly in an ideal situation. Eventually, several contenders emerged, and in one case the capital of Sarai burned to the ground. Thanks to the fall of Mongolia to the Chinese there was no outside coming not even in the slimmest of chances.

[1420-1480] With Sarai gone, and the power vacuum beyond recovery the Golden Horde effectively fell within itself. Several different khanates formed, and the princes of the Rus didn't benefit from this as they had hoped. The khanates warred with them as much as they had each other. The polish even launched offensives effectively occupying several princely states.

End of the Fall, and Babur's dynastic coupling (1480-1862)

[1480-1494] The last fourteen years of the centuries-ridden war period would end, and see the rise of the Indian influenced dynasty of Babur Khan. Babur Khan would reestablish the Golden Horde as a tributary state and swiftly dealt with the rebellious Rus city-states.

[1494-1530] Reign of Babur Khan: Babur Khan a conqueror many compare to Genghis Khan managed to pierce into both India and the Rus. Initially ruled as one empire its vastness was a monument to his legacy as much as a burden. Babur didn't follow the Jewish majority faith or even the Tengrist faith, but rather Islam which caused some to wonder what direction the lands would be taken in, but Babur proved tolerant.

[1530-1551] Reign of Hindal Mirza: The tributary state of the Golden Horde is gifted to the third son of Babur Khan. Educated by Persian masters from Mongolian Persia, and Indian masters employed by his father Hindal Mirza chose to take the title of Khan rather than the traditional Khagan to avoid offense, and show his status within the new structure leading from India. However domestically the once great capital of Sarai was rebuilt, and a princess from Moscow was taken as a consort to demonstrate the partnership necessary from the princedoms.

[1551-1626] Reign of Ruqaiya Sultan Begum: Tributary Khaness, and Consort to the Mughal Emperor Akhbar the 1st. Between Spending time in India, and Persia she brought forth new architectural styles, and even ordered the construction of the Sun-Throne. It would have been an affront to Akbar the 1st, but following his death in complete control until here death in 1626.

[1626-1695] Reign of Shahryar Mirza: The youngest son of Mughal emperor Jahangir, he was exiled for political trickery in trying to usurp the Mughal throne from his older brother. He would have very well died had it not been for a warning from supporters. He found himself in Sarai without purpose until the Kurultai chose him as a leader. He diminished the status of his realm as a tributary and effectively declared independence. He assumed the title of Khagan and first crowned himself the Golden Emperor. Shahryar sponsored the Sojournist faction and officially changed the official realm faith from Judaism to the Sojournist beliefs in a mass conversion. While the previous leaders of the Babur dynasty had been of others faiths this was no longer to be the case. Shahryar's reign even saw the welcoming of Mongol, and Persia exiles fleeing the end of Mongol rule in Persia and a return to the Hellenistic system.

Publication of the Golden Writ

Structure of the Imperial Government: Re-established the Mongolian Kurultai, but for the moment as an advisory body available to Mongolians, Turkic, and other people of the steppes. The princely council would be established as an advisory body to represent the people of the Rus who were equals rather than vassals to be brutalized and subjugated. Imperial provinces would be regulated by governors responsible for tax collection, and the ministers of the government would be known by their title of Viziers. In order to prevent corruption, a revenue department was founded to keep an eye on governors. There would be an official bureaucracy in charge of the royal bodyguard, royal court, and royal government.

A separate judiciary was founded to ensure fairness for the diversity of peoples, and beliefs.

Military: The military would be based on a system of appointments and promotes in regards to the imperial military. The elite of the military is formed from the four clans which comprise the Mingghans (Mongol regiment of 1,000) dating back to the clans sent over from Mongolia to aid the former Golden Horde. Persian and Indian tactics were integrated into the military as well. The official standing army is relatively small compared to the population size of the country these days. The highest it has ever gotten has been 300,000.

[1695-1706] Reign of Gauhar Ara Begum: Fourteenth, and Youngest child of the Mughal Shah Jahan. Witness her brother's death, and somehow ended up as the Khaganess, and Golden Empress. No one is quite sure how, but with the death of Shahryar's children, no one was electable until the Kurultai found her. Despite being only ruler for eleven years she spent time modernizing the military, conversing with scholars, and updating the law. She died at 74 years old in Sarai. Her death lead to a period of great decline.

[1706-1837] A period of decline of the realm due to the machinations of the imperial court with weak Khagans/Emperors.

[1837-1862] Bahadur Khan II: A Khagan/Emperor stuck between reform, and being a puppet of the bureaucracy. Unlike others who spent their time locked away in Sarai he chose to spend it amongst the people. Encouraging industrialization to catch up with the west, and tried to link the empire together. Ultimately he, and his sons were assassinated by a group of anarchist luddites on his way back to Sarai one day.

The Interregnum [1862-1885]
The assassination of the Khagan/Emperor sparked the military to seize control when no immediate candidate could be chosen by Kurultai. The military shared power with the Kurultai initially but gradually became more dictatorial to clamp down on Rus secessionism, and the rise of the Liberationists groups.

[1862-1876] The Liberationists War: Unlike previous wars of nationalistic concern the liberationists lead by Mikhail Bakunin were interested in the total liberation of society from the need of the state. The principality of Tver is overthrown, and Bakunin declares the establishment of the "free assembly". Historians refer to it unofficially as the Free Assembly of Tver. The early phase of the war was confined to the principalities until the last assembly fell in 1867. The fall of Tver triggered the "Arduous March" (1867-1869) in which the remaining Liberationists fled, and consolidated past the Volga.

This allowed the creation of a new "free region", and it was able to recuperate until 1872 when the military launched an offensive eThe military was pushed ba the first few timesck the first few times, but eventually, by 1875 a major counteroffensive breached into their territory. By the end of 1876, Bakunin was brought to face trial in Sarai and then hanged.

[1876-1885] Rule of the High Prince of the Rus: Due in part to the Kurultai's indecisiveness a uniquely democratic feature of the Golden Writ came into play. Asking for help from the Rus princedoms. The High Prince of the Rus was the first start to a new era and chosen every four years. The most prominent role they played being the integration of the Rus states.

Time of Revolution, and Upheaval [1885-Present]

[1885] The kurultai elect Abd Al-Ahad Khan as the Khagan and Golden Emperor. He presents himself as a stern reformist in the midst of an empire of a quagmire. He firstly proposes the "two nations" theory in part due to the growing discontent between the Russians, and the Russo-Mongolians. In his inauguration speech, he claims that both Russia and Mongolia need each other to survive due to how intertwined the two are.

[1887] Opponents of the two nations theory form the Rus revitalization league. The general intent is to secure the primacy of the Rus within the commonwealth, but how the faction means to achieve this is currently unknown due to several divergent schools of thought operating.

A) Rus Unity Party: Belief in the culture, religion, language, and the people that share a common bond despite the ethnic differences.
Beliefs in placing the Rus, its culture, and language as the source of primacy within the union. They also believe the principalities should be abolished, and unified as one nation.

B) Russian Autonomous Group: Believes in the unification of a Rus state, but as a co-equal to the imperial heartland.

C) Russian Independence Coalition: Believes in the unification of a completely independent Rus state.

[1900] The National Reform Congress forms with a coalition of several ideologies that while contradictory at several points intend on reforming the Golden Commonwealth into a proper nation.

[1904] Following a massacre of naval dockworkers in the Rus principality of Novogorad a revolutionary by the name of Vladimir Lenin stirs the principalities workers into revolution. The Collectivist republic is founded but crushed brutally within a year. Vladimir Lenin is said to be hiding in the wilds waiting his chance.

[1905] Chairman of the Eurasian Society Leon Trotsky is elected as High Prince of the Rus. He begins talks with the imperial court, government, and reformist elements of the country to launch a massive change initiative for the country. Rumors from Sarai allege his efforts are making considerable progress, and upon the next imperial speech the emperor will supposedly announce incoming changes.

The Sojournist branch is as much a take on the Mongol traditions as it is an attempt at genuine theology. Jerusalem is in the hands of tritheistic idolaters (Christians), and there is no Messiah coming to liberate Jews. God will act when he sees fit.

Since my knowledge on Judaism is pretty limited, I talked with Kai about it, and essentially the conclusion that we've reached is that Soujornism diverges so heavily from Judaism that it would be close to unrecognisable. It's based on some interesting assumptions and debatable facts about several elements. We have to combine that with the fact that we don't really have any evidence that the Khazars were anything but Rabbinic, and that Judaism is usually very adverse to conversion. The Khazars themselves are a big exceptions, and even among them, the scope of conversion is uncertain. So for Soujournism to reach its beliefs, and to be able to convert so many people, it needs to make a sharp departure from Judaism. It's not an issue, but I'm mentioning it because religion is still barely mentioned in your history. Rather than a division in Judaism, it's far more likely that this would be a smaller heretical sect or an interpretation of Judaism by an outsider. I'm also not sure about what the exact timeline of the history is. If the Khazars survived, they need to have changed the form of Judaism that their elite was practicing in order to be able to convert the polytheistic Rus, since as mentioned, converting gentiles and Judaism don't really fit, but all the changes that would lead to Sojournism presumably happen during and after the age of the Mongols.

I can tentatively accept your app because it's overall great, but in terms of religion unless you can come up with concepts that can explain the things that aren't fully explained, I don't see how Sojournism can be tied to the Khazars and how there would have been a Judaic majority in the area previously to the arrival of the Mongol. And just fundamentally, Sojournism is so different that it's likely not going to be even seen as form of Judaism by most Jewish people, and there would probably be a sharp divide because the Jewish people and their identity and faith like in real life, and your Sojourners.

Since coming up with incredibly detailed theological concepts is perhaps a little beyond the scope of this role-play, my personal advice would be to simply have Sojournism be its own individual faith based on its own interpretation of Judaism. It can claim descent from it, but it would make a lot more sense and it could as such expand far more rapidly.

Well, with what NPC are you going to interact? What precisely do you mean to do with them?

IC post up.

This one’s mostly just tone-setting fluff with little substantive content, although I do expand a little bit on the history of the 3rd Scand. Rev. War and our relationship with our neighbours in East Asia.

Full Nation Name : The Fourth Continental Republic
Majority/Official Culture : Through the thoroughness of the nationalisation policies of the late 1800s, a large portion of the population considers itself ‘American’. However, the further from New York one travels, the more one meets localised cultures that consider themselves separate, including the largely aristocratic Dixie class, the Appalachians, the Middle Westerners, and many native cultures.
Territorial Core :
Image

Territorial Claim : Three broad opinions on this matter exist: some want the Republic to expand across the sea, and institute friendly governments in colonial nations to spur commerce. Others want to finally cross the Mississippi, and lay claim to the vast tracts of wilderness there, in spite of the treaties with the Native kingdoms there. Yet others prefer isolationism, and focussing on internal matters rather than seeking outward expansion, which would surely only empower the national government.
Capital City : New York City
Population : 45 million

Government Type : Unicameral presidential republic
Government Ideology/Policies : Social democracy
Government Focus : The current government has two main focuses: the expansion of education and healthcare throughout its territories, and maintaining its legitimacy in the face of ever-increasing conservative, monarchist sentiments throughout its territories. Good governance is key in this, but the social democratic government walks a tightrope between various kinds of socialists on one side, and the Americanists on the other. The socialists want the government to stop pandering to capitalists and declare the revolution, now that a slight majority of the Continental Congress is in favour of the leftist cause. They call for the abolition of private property, and various groups clamour for different forms of government; from Nordic-style council socialism to various forms of Anarchism to Vanguard Socialism.
Head of State : His excellency, president Eugene Victor Debs
Head of Government : Vice-president, president of the Congress Ben Hanford
Government Description : Following the reforms of the 1900 ‘Millennium’ constitution, the Fourth Continental Republic, or Third American Republic, has been proclaimed. Learning the lessons from both the Third Republic (1881-1899) and the Imperial Period (1852-1881), the Fourth Continental Republic has done away with the old bicameral legislature, in which the Senate was the predominant body, and replaced it with a single unicameral body, elected directly by the people. These elections are hallmarked by the universal suffrage (all employed persons have a vote). They make up the legislature, and they both draft their own legislation, and approve legislation proposed to them by the executive government. The executive, then, is headed by the president, who chooses and fires his ministers at will, except for the vice-president, who is elected by the Continental Congress. The Continental Congress has no authority over the president’s picks, and since the 1902 Jonathan v. State decision by the High Court, cannot use its powers to influence ministers other than by legislation. The Millennium system is marked by its incredible, almost authoritarian power granted to the executive, a remnant of the Imperial era and the Third Republic.

Majority/State Religion : While outwardly secular, the nation is majority catholic, and while minor protestant and druidic sects exist, their power is very limited. The conservative movement in the Continental Republic is highly influenced by catholic morals, while the church of Rome is reviled by socialists.

Economic Ideologies : Capitalism, social democracy
Major Production : The Great Lakes region is heavily industrialised and produces mainly heavy machinery, steel, cars, and ships. The factories of New England produce mostly consumer goods, while the South is still heavily agricultural and relies heavily and both cash crops and an impoverished working class.
Economic Description : The economy of the Continental Republic exists in a weird limbo, for reasons of its political history. The second half of the 19th century was marked both by the Imperial era, which saw the US under the rule of an aristocratic monarch whom sought to expand his power and legitimacy, and the mainly nationalistic, social Darwinist Third Republic. Both the Emperors and the Third Republic mainly allowed for laissez-faire capitalism, which created the conditions for what would become the Gilded Age. However, the centralisation efforts of those governments proved instrumental for later social democratic reforms. The emperor created a system of national schooling that the Third Republic expanded, and that the social democrats could then expand further into impoverished regions. The strong national government, used mainly to stamp out dissent, could then be turned against financial crimes and corrupt institutions. This, and slashing the military budget in half, allowed the funding of various social programs, the most ambitious of which being the public housing program instituted by the Debs administration.

Development: Modern
Development Description : While deeply unpopular with working class people, the one thing the Third Republic managed to do was building infrastructure that supported the income of industrialists. The system of canals and railways that would link up the nation, especially in the North, proved instrumental in building up a large industrial base. It would also prove their undoing, as the creation of a large industrial working class, regimented to the sound of the factory bell, would become the voting base that brought the social democrats to power.

Army Description : The Continental army (previously known as the Imperial Army) used to be a prestigious and powerful organisation. During the Imperial era, it was the backbone of state strength, and even during the Third Republic, it remained a strong institution, sharing power with the landed gentry and the monied class. Even when capital became the driving force for obedience after the abdication of the last emperor, the rifles of the New Continental Army, stripped only of its imperial name, was a force to be reckoned with. A strike-breaker army, all the way up to 1897, and a very efficient one at that, fighting both black insurrection in the south and union activity in the north. Prestigious regiments, such as the XI-Regiment Eagle, the XX-Regiment Washington, and the XXII-Regiment Arthur, were well-represented in national propaganda, and their commanders were figures of national fame.

The Continental Army was seriously cut back after the 1900 election, however. Some have called the institution overly bloated for its business, in service of the military-industrial complex. Whatever the truth of the matter, much of the military’s budget was relocated to other projects, especially social housing. The army was halved, and instead of scrapping some of the less well-known regiments, all the nationalist prideful flags were abolished. Many of the troops were now reliant on the very public housing the government was beginning to build. Some understood, but there exists a lot of resentment, both in the rank-and-file, but especially in the officer corps. Many veteran officers found themselves elected to office following the military cuts.

The result of the cuts is that the military is small, but it has retained a professional core of high-quality officers and men. The military was allowed some discretion in what personnel was allowed to stay, to make up for the fact that the War Department had total control over organisational matters. This has resulted in a high-quality standing force, with conservative and even monarchist leanings being overrepresented. Socialist officers primarily got the sack, and the military unions, briefly coming to life after 1897, were extinguished for lack of membership.

The military remains as a defensive force, but one of questionable loyalties.
Army Weakness : The army is small and not funded to fight a full-scale war. It is meant as a stop-gap, to hold the line defensively until the nation can be conscripted to fight. As such, it is in no capacity for offensive operations, and will not be for some time depending on the level of political engagement. Military morale is also very low, for the simple reason that nationalist soldiers do not like to fight and die for a socialist cause, even one as mellow as social democracy.
Naval Description : The navy is a hot button issue for the social democrats. One half sees them as just another part of an imperialist military, and wants to cut it down and scrap the old battleships to turn into ploughshares. The other half recognises the socialist leanings of the sailor corps, which has always been more left-leaning than the land army, and sees it as a possible aid in the international revolution. Vanguard socialism is big among the sailors, especially the navy marines, and they hope to be the tool to export the eventual revolution. The more moderate social democrats, however, are none too keen on fomenting actual violent revolution, and want to improve the nation through the ballot box. As this is such a contentious issue, the government has elected to keep the old navy in place. This means the navy remains somewhat bloated, and makes up a large portion of the national budget, much to the chagrin of many who would want to fund land reform and a strong national healthcare funds, both of which are currently not realistic within the Continental budget.
Naval Weakness : A politically divided force from the government, which makes its strength a potential weakness. Being a hotbed for Vanguard socialism, it makes itself an enemy of both social democrats and the nationalist military.
Further Military Description : The Continental military has been an early adopter of Zeppelin technology, which features heavily in its propaganda. As the airship is more a liability than an asset, the military is somewhat displeased, but the government enjoys the futuristic sheen of their fleet.

National Goals : Currently, the government seeks to implement wide-ranging labour and capital reforms. The first stage, meaning the implementation of wage laws and worker protection legislation, has been completed, technically at the tail-end of the Third Republic. The Fourth Republic, meanwhile, has expanded infrastructure and introduced a free public education scheme, from childcare facilities to public universities. Their flagship scheme, done in collaboration with city governments, is a public housing development that follows social democratic principles. These working class complexes have plenty of facilities, and are not the run-down prisons that the catholic church used to build for the homeless. Rents are kept artificially low, which has put a downward pressure on rents and housing prices throughout the country, much to the dismay of landlords. The planned stages of reform include healthcare reform, nationalisation of the railways, land redistribution, and generous pension funds for those unable to work. Those, however, are still being discussed. The victory of the social democrats in 1897, 1900 and 1905, which once united them, has now set the stage for infighting over priorities and socialist dogma. Meanwhile, despite economic success, the social democrats of America have actually lost a large share of votes since 1900, and are now dependent on a coalition government with the more radical Vanguard Party. The larger Christian Democratic Party has tried to make inroads with the government to sway them to a more centrist coalition, which has fallen on deaf ears with the president, but which some more moderate party members see as preferable. In the long term, the nation seeks to expand its social infrastructure, though roadblocks are up ahead, with enemies in every shadow.
National Issues : The nation is divided. While the social democrats have won a number of contentious elections, latest in 1905, the battle has not been fought yet. The catholic church and the landed gentry still hold a lot of power, and have not been removed from their positions of economic dominance. While the special legal protections of the church have been abolished, their
National Figures of Interest : Peter H. Clarck, a writer and educator, whose writings are seen as the basis of ‘Clarckist socialism’. It places particular emphasis on racial equality and black labour power. His writings have international traction among some socialists, but conservatives see him as the second coming of Satan, and conservative socialist movements see him as a racialist revisionist.
National Ambition/Aspirations : The dream of the social democrats is to gradually create a worker’s paradise, through incrementalism and through the ballot box. It hopes to set a shining example for others, and to liberate the working classes worldwide.

History : The history of the Continental State, to refer to the institution through its many iterations and forms, is one in constant shift, of birth, reaction, counteraction, and gradual shift. While the story of America goes back way further than 1776, that year has to count as the official starting point of the Continental State.

1. The Convention Sovereignty (1776-1798);
This twenty-year period marks the start of the Continental State, from 1776 to 1799, with the collapse of the Knightly System in the Americas. When Albion released the Continental State by treaty in 1776, and relinquished its control over its erstwhile colonies, it relinquished it to the existing power structure: namely, the system of knightly orders that the House Lancelot had left in place. While the worst excesses of Lancelot government were removed, the fundamental iniquity of the knightly system was kept in place, and its power was maintained through the Everlasting Friendship with Albion. Separated from the Round Table, the remaining Knightly Orders and families were free to turn the Continental State into their playground. Knightly virtues went almost entirely unenforced, which made the Continental State drift apart from the Camelot system.

The 7 years war, while won through the power of Albion, also proved the final nail in the coffin for the Knightly system. The early war resulted in the deaths of hundreds of officers, mainly because of the use of outdated tactics and concepts of chivalry. Especially native skirmishers proved especially deadly. At the same time, the war saw the rise of a new elite class, as children of the monied class acquired social status in the army. The pre-eminent figure here is George Washington, who became the figurehead of the tarpaulin movement, seeking to abolish the knightly system and replace it with a system of representative government. After the treaty with Albion expired, the tarpaulins tried to have the Continental Congress, a Round Table-esque organisation, hand over power to the New Congress and Washington. When they failed to do so, the tarpaulins radicalised, and following the example of the French revolution, they put their enemies to the sword and the guillotine, ending the Convention Sovereignty and starting the period of the First Republic.

2. The First Republic (1798-1819)
The First Republic starts with the consulship of George Washington, commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, basically through was can only be described as a coup d’etat. Or rather, a total reformation of the government from the army, since the army was the only institution that remained unaffected by the purges of 1798. The position of consul was nominally elected by the Continental Congress, but since that body was made up of officers and army contractors, it made sense for them to elect the commander-in-chief, who eventually paid all of them. This was fine with Washington, because he expressly made it clear that he wanted to devolve to a civilian government under a proper constitution. However, the constitution was not even drafted when, in December 1799, Washington died of pneumonia. Henry Knox, his second in command, was then elected to the consulship, and while he revered Washington, he had less enthusiasm for a totally civilian government. Without the strong hand of Washington, the officers and army contractors established a ‘gentlemanly republic’ reminiscent of the Roman model, which above all favoured the officer corps and the monied classes. The federal government became capable of enforcing the value of the dollar, defending against brigands and native incursions, and using the court system to enforce contracts. That was about the extend of the federal government. The First Republic would end, not with a bang, but with a whimper. Following a failed military expedition across the Mississippi, which bankrupted the First Republic, the officer corps and the army contracts, who had been losing in fame and fortune over the past decade, their actual power to affect change became limited. Instead, it was the aristocratic southern land owning class that came to prominence, and their Jeffersonian, agrarian, Catholic ideals would dominate the political landscape for years to come, sharing power with up-and-coming northern industrialists. The Dixie Aristocracy would rule the nation from that point onward, in what is called the Second Republic.

3. The Second Republic (1819-1852)
The time of agriculture and slavery. The Continental State had always made a profit off the backs of enslaved people, but the Second Republic took this to a new level of institutionalisation. No 3/5th compromise was reached this time; black slaves counted as a full person, and their vote could be cast; just by their enslavers. This made enslaved people not only labour forces, but political power to be traded and bartered with. Northern industrialists, some of whom held abolitionist sentiments (also to achieve new markets in the south) were almost pushed out entirely. The government instituted new tariffs for agricultural produce from abroad, which artificially aided the southern planter class. Slavery was exported to northern states, who saw their own abolitionist laws invalidated by the High Court for ‘an inability to be reconciled with the scientific truth of the superiority of the white race, and its constitutional and moral duty towards the black race’.

This resulted in discussions on northern secession, and the northern states began rallying forces for possible conflict. The southern states acted first, however, and sent the continental army under general Lee to disarm any northern militia that was forming at that moment. It was the beginning of six years of on-off civil war, which eventually tore the nation not in two, but into many more constituent parts, as the southern aristocrats also began to fight among themselves, and many feared servile insurrections took place. Meanwhile, the north devolved into warlordism, with the only real power being behind Lee’s cannon. He ruled the north more as a monarch than a representative, and eventually managed to gain enough popularity with his men to march on New York, to dissolve the Second Republic and proclaim him imperator; or emperor, in the Catholic sense. An ally of the Catholic church, the pope crowned him in Rome on Christmas Day 1852, starting the so-called Imperial Era.

4. The Imperial Era (1852-1881)
The Imperial Era is universally looked back on as a mistake, with the exception of the southern aristocrat planters. It was an era of tyranny, oppression and economic downturn. However, that does not mean that its memory is not used by nationalists and capitalists to harken back to, especially in the era of social democracy in which we find ourselves today. The era can be divided into the three emperorships: Emperor Robert (1852-1865), Emperor Thomas (1865-1875), and Empress Julia (1875-1881). The three-month reign of Emperor Custis (1881) is often not recorded, because all he did was transition the empire into the Third Republic. Both emperors Robert and his friend and heir Thomas were generals, and they ruled America from horseback, making their armies into the source of their power. Robert’s Virigina Guard and Thomas’ Stonewall Brigade drew exclusively from southern volunteers, and its officer corps consisted of slavers all. The single purpose of the emperorship was the preservation of slavery, to the detriment of all other purposes. This would eventually lead to the economic downturn of the 1870s. When emperor Thomas unexpectedly died, his daughter Julia ascended the throne, much to the dismay of the southern gentry, who had particular reservations about being ruled by a woman. The economic downturn of the 70s was further blamed on her, despite her returning to a more civilian, capitalist government. The military eventually forced her to resign in favour of Robert’s son Custis, who eventually oversaw the creation of the Third Republic, of which he was the first president. He was soundly defeated in the first free elections in 1886.

5. The Third Republic (1881-1900)
The Third Republic scrapped the economic policy of the emperors, but in all other matters followed its example. The vote was broadened to all white men and slavery was abolished, though it was replaced by an economic system that kept enslaved people in bondage all the same. Companies were not prosecuted for perceived crimes during the imperial period, and what was more, kept their privileged position. The Third Republic was a nationalistic, authoritarian entity that replaced the repressive force of the military with various official and private police forces, including the Pinkerton agency.

The 1881 constitution would leave large parts of the population dissatisfied. The abolition of the empire was in large part due to the actions of trade unions and socialist political organisations, and yet their efforts, especially of the followers of the still-disenfranchised Peter H. Clarck, were not recognised. To the contrary, their powers were even more diminished when the Pinkertons were used to squash any further union activity. It was in the end the brazen openness and hostility of the gilded age that pushed a large part of the population into the arms of the social democrats. Having alienated the press, underestimating the power of journalism and overestimating their own propaganda, the Third Republic flaunted their power. This led to massive strikes, and even armed exchanges with police forces and the Pinkertons, with parts of the army disobeying orders to fire upon the strikers. Chicago and the rest of the Middle West were hotbeds of activity, but armed groups of former enslaved people in the South, for example in Atlanta, and socialist demonstrators in New England, managed to project force throughout the nation, until the Third Republic proved wholly incapable of controlling it any further. Special elections in 1896 provided the social democrats with the majority needed to draft a new constitution, a task they took to heart. They finished work in 1899, and the new constitution went into effect in 1900, which granted it the title of Millennium Constitution.

6. The Fourth Republic, the Millennial State (1900 – present day)
The Fourth Republic was not to be the labour paradise that many had hoped it would be. Their great electoral victory in 1896 belies the fact that the social democratic party of America consists of more than just angry steel workers. Conservatives, too, are found in its ranks, as well as businesspeople with a heart for the poor. These individuals have no interest in abolishing capitalism, and even the majority of incrementalists think it is still too soon for that. The Millennium Constitution was a work of compromise, then, retaining the old self-appointed High Court with its conservative judges, some still left from the imperial period. The pre-eminent senate, the voice of the southern aristocracy and a force for conservatism, was abolished, but this did not hurt the industrialists too much. However, concentration of power into 500 elected individuals made party contributions and lobbying much more potent. At the same time, the executive retained much of its powers, despite calls for it to give more power back to the legislative branch. The social democrats were partially unwilling to give away executive power, and partially had no choice out of fear of possible future deadlock. While removed from the constitution, the right to property was still recognised in jurisprudence of the High Court.

This led to immediate backlash from the far left, especially from the revolutionary socialists and anarchists, and especially within the Vanguardists. These socialists wanted nothing less than revolution, and the hollowed-out Millennium Constitution seemed like a betrayal of their cause. The fleet in New York almost mutinied, and it took personal intervention from the vice president to make them fall back in line. Chicago has been quiet, partially because union leaders are in league with the government to prevent unrest, but many of their members are ready to strike again, even with new labour laws to protect them. All the while, the far right is on the rise, paid for by rich industrialists and remembering the perceived glories of the imperial era, hoping to restore an emperor to the American throne to go and conquer the Golden Circle. America stands at a crossroads in his history, as it has stood for the past 100 years.

Full Nation Name : Independent Republic of the Louisianan State
Majority/Official Culture : Our people refuse to be identified as American. They are Louisianan in their own right, independent from the Americans, and therefore have no relation with them whatsoever. However, not all of the citizens are Louisianan. There is also an African-American majority, and their culture influences much of the south of the country. Meanwhile, a small (yet distinct) group of people are Creoles, centred in the west and centre. In the north, it is mixed, with most of the 'white' population residing there, as well as some Native Americans.
Territorial Core : A state next to Texas, on the Gulf of Mexico, with New Orleans to the east. (Basically, take Louisania up to the 31st Parallel, which is the straight line next to Mississippi)
Territorial Claim : Our government wishes to expand north and east, as well as trading posts/spheres of influence in South America. However, the people want to take the west, all the way to the West Coast, and south to the Carribean.
Capital City : New Orleans
Population : 1.3 million

Government Type : Presidential non-partisan republic
Government Ideology/Policies : Expansionist as its official policy, but also militarist.
Government Focus : The Davidson administration wishes to build up its military, whilst at the same time increasing spending on infrastructure (especially transport infrastructure), primarily for use in the event of a war. For the military, its navy is in good shape for a war, but the Louisianan Army needs improvements in organisation and equipment. Various attempts to fix this have failed, since the military commanders don't understand the tactics of a land force. Meanwhile, infrastructure is going at a steady rate, but it is concentrated in the urban areas. In the rest of the country, counties have had to take matters into their own hands, and improve buildings and roadworks themselves.
Head of State : President Leon Davidson
Head of Government : N/A
Government Description : This is the 11th Congress, that began last year. Each one serves for 4 years, and ever since the Louisianan Declaration of Independence, it has been bicameral and split into the Senate and House of Representatives. (OOC: Please consider this Congress as using the same system as IRL US Congress.) The President, Leon Davidson, took office last year, following his landslide victory. The government is non-partisan, meaning that there are no parties, and anybody may decide to run. The Judiciary is the Supreme Court, split into 5 districts. The Declaration of Independence gave the Supreme Court powers to oversee the government, and to check the legislature, which they do on a yearly basis by the constitutional precedent set in 1872- that every year, in the Current Louisiana address (modelled on the State of the Union), the President must talk about his commitment to 'transparency, commitment to the Constitution, and full dedication to his service as President'. The Cabinet has 11 Secretaries, and 4 Cabinet Councils, to run the country efficiently.

[b]Majority/State Religion :
National policy is secularism, with the majority being Protestant.

Economic Ideologies : Capitalism
Major Production : Ships and textiles
Economic Description : It can be described as an agrarian economy, with the factories being located in the cities. There is one 'industrial city', a city built for the purposes of industry, which has been called Davenport. Louisiana is industrialising at a rapid pace, built on the system in the 1860s that they continued after the war. It is still dependent on slaves, but all slaves were freed in 1880, but the now-freed men and women had to either find work in the cities, or continue in the flat plains. Most of them chose the latter, and so large farms, maintained by those former slaves, have sprung up in the north and west.

Development: Semi-industrialised
Development Description : The country is (as mentioned above) currently still industrialising. It is split between agricultural and industrial regions, with the flatter plains more suitable for farming work, and the cities (especially New Orleans and Davenport) better for factories.

Army Description : The Army of the Louisianan State numbers at approximately 35,000 soldiers and 12,000 in reserve. Therefore it is by no means large, and due to the state of the economy, it cannot afford the latest equipment. Their primary rifle is the Remington Rolling Block, which is not outdated but also rather obscure in modern conflict. They also have one brigade of cavalry, of 2,000 horses of different types for different purposes, and is probably the most modernised unit the army has.

Due to the relative peace experienced by the state in the 1890s, the army has not been deployed for active combat since the Civil War- or the Louisianan State War. However, domestically, it has been sent to stop riots and enforce national policy, the latest one being in 1903. Trainings occur at different rates in different places, but you can expect better and more frequent training if you are stationed at the coast.
Army Weakness : As I have emphasised, the army is not industrialised enough to successfully face an enemy. So this would be equipment and funding.
Naval Description : The Navy of the Louisianan State is, compared to its ground counterpart, much better equipped. Being on the coast, the navy has better funding and receives more attention in government. Out of the 25 vessels the Navy currently maintains (not counting the various patrol ships leased to the navy by shipyards), 19 of them are made of steel. Their armaments are also better in range, accuracy and speed. In general, if it is deployed, it can be counted as a formidable fighting force.
Naval Weakness : Personnel. It only has 10,000 sailors, including those needed to fix and maintain the vessels, and 2 ships cannot be manned by sailors at the moment. However, the government is working to fix this soon.

National Goals : Economically, the government wants the country to be fully industrialised by the 1920s. Agriculture makes up about 60% of the economy, which is too much for the government's plans to work. Davidson also has a goal of completing his ambitious infrastructure plan- connecting the entire country by rail- in the next decade or so.
National Issues : Unemployment rates are at an all-time high, and this is stopping the economy from moving forwards to keep up with the rest of the world.

History :

1. State of the USA
From 1803 to 1864, Louisiana was part of the United States, and larger in size and population. The economy was even more agriculture-dependent, and industrialisation only came with the Industrial Revolution across the Western World. This part of our history is somewhat forgotten today, since it is not important in the current context, nor necessary to be taught in schools. However, we have a surplus of information by historians, which show that life was better in those days- before industrialising, agriculture was the norm, and the flat plains of the country were ideal for just that.

2. War of the Louisianan State
What the rest of the world may call the American Civil War, Louisianans call it the War of the Louisianan State. From 1860 to 1865, they fought in a long and bloody struggle with the South against the Union. A series of battles took place in the state, and this culminated in the Battle of Clinton, where General Lawrence defeated a Union army and secured independence for the state. For this, the newly formed Congress of Louisiana made Lawrence the first President of the state, and granted him powers that were similar to (some people may say the same as) those of the President of the United States.

3. Age of Industrialisation
From the early 1870s to today, Louisiana has been rapidly reforming its economy to keep up with the rest of the world. Davenport, on Marsh Island, was completed in 1885, the first of its kind. It was like a hub of different factories, with houses for the workers to live in, and its own mayor, which was elected by the factory owners. However, with industrialisation came economic downturn, as agriculture- still a large source of income- was pushed aside to make space for factories. This meant that farmers, living on their land for generations, were suddenly unemployed. Those who didn't want to go to the cities continued farming, but were ignored by the Treasury. This is still common today, but Davidson is working hard to undo it.

RP Sample:

Cabinet Meeting, Central Building, New Orleans

"Good morning, Cabinet."

He spoke in a low voice, somewhat sinister, but also reassuring to the Secretaries. Leon Davidson was not new to politics, nor was he inexperienced in the economy. As a former businessman himself, he understood what was happening with his country. And it was up to him to fix it.

He appeared in his suit. In his forties, he looked unsatisfied. But that was just how he looked. The Cabinet were already seated, with the seat at the front vacant. That was for the President. So, Davidson took a seat, and- as his Cabinet had expected- asked about the situation in the economy.

Two advisors from the Treasury were also present. They held some roles that gave them the responsibility of ensuring the country had backup plans in situations just like this. And the news from them were not the best. One of them predicted that, if the unemployment rates continued as it was currently, by 1910 the country would have 300,000 people unemployed. Currently it was 95,000. The other one- a respected economist said to be the next Secretary of the Treasury- assured the Cabinet that the country was doing well, but could not make any promises on the success of industrialisation. But both agreed on one point- agriculture needed to either be recognised more, or be reduced to a minor industry.

"All those farmers must not be left alone to die out." the second one argued. "Sir, if you want this country to succeed, you need to address the issue of agriculture. And, of course, unemployment."

Davidson acknowledged that fact, and made a mental note to address it further.

Because, of course, he was planning for war, and war could only succeed with industry.

  • The population is too high. The combined population of the areas under your control that I could find is of around 39,685,759. A tamer Deluge and no Partitions could help explain an increase in population, but not by that much, 45 million would probably be the most.
  • Development would most likely still be somewhat fractured. Even with a more proactive government, the PLC would still be an Eastern European country. The Industrial Revolution would get there a bit later, and areas in the Ukraine and Belarus have traditionally been somewhat sparsely populated and more unruly than Poland and Lithuania proper, so it's likely that the rural areas there would still lag behind, in a way not too dissimilar to Austria-Hungary's West/East divide in real life.
  • As for the army, I find it difficult to believe that it would be completely meritocratic, no army in this era was, and the PLC, where the nobility still clearly plays some role, clearly wouldn't. The army should also probably be further reduced in standing size, Germany had a standing army of 606.866 men in 1904 as an example, and it was much larger and more militarized. 350,000 to 400,000 standing men would probably make the most sense I feel.
  • The Commonwealth Legions could have been a thing historically, but are unlikely to still be a thing in the way you describe them - no modern state would entrust its defense to a mercenary force. They could still be something closer to the French Foreign Legion, but it would need to be a relatively small force, as it wouldn't be that trusted - and as mentioned several times in the past, women serving actively in the military at this point is impossible.
  • The history is mostly alright, though you would need to explain the May Constitution. It was such a radical act precisely because the Commonwealth at the time was in a very precarious position. A still somewhat stable and large Commonwealth wouldn't have had the incentive to adopt it. There also would have likely been, like in real life, conservative opposition to it - the Constitution was so radical that only the French revolutionary constitution or the American one were comparable.
  • You should also generally talk a bit more about the things that made the Commonwealth the Commonwealth. What happened to the medieval Seijm, and the conflicts between the monarchy and the Szlachta? The liberum veto, which you mention was never adopted, was a practice that evolved - it wasn't adopted at once, so how did it not evolve into the issue it was in real life? When did the monarchy become a native and de facto hereditary one?
  • How does the PLC deal with its ethnic diversity? Especially considering that you mention big national revolts in 1848, they just kinda get swept aside. How is it trying to establish a national identity, if the Polish and Lithuanian ones are still pushed forward?

RIGHT! After briefly losing the will to live, recovering from post-vaccine aches and frankly being bored of being a lazy arse, I am back to trying to work on my app
Right, so brief rundown of changes
-fixed the population
-fractured development (urban is modern but countryside's still developing)
-The army is now absolutely PLAGUED with favouritism towards the nobility
-Commonwealth Legions are just French Foreign Legion lite with an epic mercenary past
-The May Constitution was adopted because the King and some pro-Monarch nobles, scared that the French Revolution would motivate the people to fully replace the Monarchy with a Republic, tried to dissolve the Sejm and impose an Absolute Monarchy. After a brief civil war, in which Prussia was key in protecting the PLC during the civil war (bribed via Gdansk and other territories), the Sejmists won and the May Constitution was adopted as a form of further limiting the monarch as well as straightening out the Sejm.
-The PLC responded to the ethnic nationalist uprisings via federalising the Commonwealth, dividing it along ethnic lines and giving each major ethnic group a local Sejm ruled by that ethnicity to rule locally. Though this isn't entirely fair as these local Sejms are still completely vulnerable and subservient to the will of the National Sejm (basically, think the relationship between US states and the US Federal Government)

Problems I'm having:
-Don't know how to void the liberum veto
-Don't know how to talk about/where to start with the Medieval Sejm and the fighting between the Monarchy and the Szlachta, since that'd be a lot to talk about

Any help would be appreciated

  • Your PoD conflicts with the American app. There is no Civil War because the history pans out to have a Warlord and Imperial Era instead in which Robert E. Lee becomes Emperor. Even if the Civil War PoD works, there is no explanation as to how Louisiana manages to keep itself independent from the rest of the victorious Confederacy, which is another major divergence of its own, since that would imply the South is independent when that is not obviously the case. Please have a look at the application for the "Fourth Continental Republic" and write out a new history that reconciles with that one.
  • If you desire more creative freedom, I would personally recommend coming up with a concept that isn't so reliant on another player's app. The entire Louisiana Territory is unclaimed at the moment for example, so feel free to make something out of that if you want.

Hey all, just a heads up, this is in line with what we've said before that we do ask for people to be active within the IC, and the accepted app is only part of that, and we ask people to be somewhat active in the IC is another, as a result the reservations of Lotharingia, Austria-Hungary, Inca and Japanese America have been removed until an IC post is made, however if a reservation for the territories are made before that IC post then there's not much that can be done.

What's the thoughts on a Pan-German Constitutional Monarchy? In other words, lands that belonged to the IRL German Empire in combinations with Austria, Bohemia, and the Sudentenland united under the idea of a united German nation? Fairly similar to the IRL equivalent of the German Empire, with the exception that the Springtime of Nations brought about a system in which only the Reichstag was in place instead of the Bundesrat accompanying it.

Normally we wouldn't be too thrilled about such a large nation in central Europe since Germany and Austria/Hungary usually get different players, but seeing as we do not have any such players for the time being, you could give it a try, the concept is certainly interesting.

Full Nation Name : The United German Empire or Das Vereinigte Deutsche Reich
Majority/Official Culture : Germanic
Territorial Core : German Empire proper in addition to Austria proper and the Sudetenland
Territorial Claim : Jutland and Southern Africa
Capital City : Berlin, State of Brandenburg
Population : 82,000,000 (Mainland) 21,000,000 (African Colonies)

Government Type : Constitutional Monarchy
Government Ideology/Policies : Imperialist, Interventionist, and Anti-Socialist
Government Focus : The current focus of the United German Empire is the development of its African colonies as well as acting as a bulwark against socialist ideology on the European mainland
Head of State : Kaiser Kaiser Wilhelm II
Head of Government : Kanzler Marcus von Hallberg
Government Description : The government is run under three separate branches, the Kaiserkammer which consists solely of the Kaiser which acts as the executive branch, the Volkskammer consisting of twenty elected members from each state that acts as the legislative branch, and the Justizkammer consisting of a council of five justices elected by the Kaiser.

The most powerful of these branches in the Kaiserkammer. In accordance to the Unified Constitution of 1866, the Kaiser is the ultimate decision maker in foreign policy decisions, most specifically in the declaration of war. In addition to this, the Kaiser is capable of vetoing any legislation brought forwards by the Volkskammer that cannot be overturned. The Kaiser is also in charge of electing the officials who make up the Justizkammer with the simple majority approval from the Volkskammer and can dismiss them with another simple majority from the legislative branch.

The Volkskammer is in charge of most domestic issues within the Empire. Each of the twenty states under the banner of the United Germanic Empire is allowed to elect one legislature, known as a Volksstimme, every five years with no limits on terms. Voting is only permitted for male citizens within the Empire, although a recent movement to allow for universal suffrage has began to gain traction in the nation. Of these twenty members, one is selected as the Kanzler, who acts as the head of the legislative branch and represents them in matters dealing with the Kaiser.

The Justizkammer is in charge with insuring the constitution is upheld by both the lower courts as well as by the Volkskammer. With five members being on the court, a majority decision made holds the power to either uphold or forfeit any decisions made by the other two branches. This serves as an equalizer to the two branches, as neither portion can be allowed anything drastic over the other. Judges will serve until either their death, their resignation, or a removal with approval from the other two branches.

Any person who possesses at least one parent who is a German citizen is likewise granted citizenship, regardless of their place of birth. All citizens are guaranteed freedoms of assembly, partitioning of the government, freedom of religion, and a trial by peers. For those who do not classify as citizens within the Empire, said rights are generally still recognized but are not officially mandated, something that has caused trouble within some of the colonial areas of the Empire. Non-citizens can become naturalized after serving for four years within the Deutsches Heer, the armed forces of the Empire.

Majority/State Religion : Primarily consists of a majority protestant and minority catholic, with handfuls of other religions stemming from either colonial areas or small Jewish populations in the Empire
Religious Description : Whilst a general mistrust stemming from historical prejudices are aimed towards the Jewish minority in the Empire, the rights for these populations still exist within the Empire and the election of prominent Jewish officials within the Volkskammer has begun to sway public opinion into a more positive light in the remainder of the public's eyes

Economic Ideologies : Interventionalist Capitalists
Major Production : Coal, steel, machinery, automobiles, precious metals, and other modern goods
Economic Description : The Empire's economy has become heavily industrialized over the last few decades, with a large surplus of resources from both the mainland and its colonies supplying the demand for modern goods as the middle-class has become a rapid super majority in the nation. The government as a whole mostly allows the market to do as it pleases, however in fear of potential socialist influence from its neighbors, emphasis is placed on the breaking up of monopolies and loose sets of workplace regulations that do enough to keep most of the working population content. The government utilizes tariffs and subsidies to as both diplomatic and economical tools in its arsenal as the Empire attempts to hold itself as the industrial powerhouse of the mainland continent.

Development: Modern
Development Description : With a vast surplus of both natural resources and workforce populations, the Empire's economy is one of the the fastest growing and steadfast in the mainland. The most prominent export is the automobile produced its inventor, Carl Benz. Under guidance and a fair share of subsidies from the government, production of the vehicles has reached well into the thousands by the year 1905, which while not enough to completely motorize the nation has lead to a series of both economic and quality of life improvements for the nation and its people.

Reservation accepted, but without the Sudetenland, as that would both complicate the situation for any potential player holding Bohemia, and would be difficult to show on the map

okee some back of the envelope calculations

Since the NSRS industrialised a couple decades earlier than Northern Europe did IRL, I'm assuming that the more backwards regions of the country (Sweden, Finland, and Iceland) had more time to catch up with the Dano-Norwegian industrial core.

So call it a "core Scandinavian" population (Denmark, Sweden, mainland Norway) of 10.72 millions and a "semi-industrialised" population (Finland, the Northern Isles, and Iceland) of 2.84 millions. In addition to this there's a colonial population of 8.69 millions.

Core Scandinavia will have the economic development of RL Denmark and Norway, which means a per-capita income of slightly over $6,000 (inflation and price level adjusted 2011, statistics from Gapminder Foundation). Slightly lower in the self-governing colonies, comparable to Canada, and slightly higher in the Duchy of Holstein, comparable to Germany. The semi-industrialised population will have the economic development of RL Sweden, which means about $3,600. Estland and Livland has $2,000 and $1,800, as per RL Estonia and Latvia. Since my colonial population mostly represents trading entrepots and their environs, I'm going with the most comparable example I can think of (and can get statistics for) which is Singapore for $2,700.

Given inflation statistics from the US Bureau of Labour Statistics, taking the earliest figures and extrapolating based on the 1913-1914 rate of inflation, a 1905 dollar would be about $26.96 in 2011 money. The RL USD in 1905 and my in-character Northern krone are both on the gold standard, at a rate of kr. 1 = $20.67, so converting the above figures into IC krone I get kr. 10.95 (or 10 and 18-11) for core Scandinavia, kr. 6.46 (or 6 and 9-2) for the semi-industrialised population, kr. 4.85 (or 4 and 16-11) in the colonies, and kr. 3.59 and kr. 3.23 for Estland and Livland respectively.

Multiplying these figures by the population of these respective regions, that gives us in net national income:

For core Scandinavia 117.4 million kroner, for the semi-industrialised population 18.3 million kroner, for the Concessionary Ports 42.1 million kroner, for the self-governing colonies 17.1 million kroner, for the Duchy of Holstein 7.6 million kroner, in Livonia 3.3 million kroner, and for Estonia 1.5 million kroner.

It's assumed that the self-governing colonies, the Duchy of Holstein, and the Baltic client states will be providing nothing to the Commonwealth's finances. That leaves us a taxable GNI of 135.7 million kroner in Norden Proper and 42.1 million kroner overseas.

Our World in Data tells me that Western European tax receipts in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries are estimated at around 5~10% of the economy. Since the NSRS is a revolutionary state and all, it makes intuitive sense to me that its government's share of the economy would be somewhat larger than typical. Let's say 12%, with the colonies only effectively contributing a third of that because of administrative inefficiencies associated with distance (and also the costs of local government). That leaves a tax revenue of 16.3 million kroner from Norden Proper and 1.7 million kroner from the colonies, for 18.0 million kroner per year in total public revenue.

More immediately relevant, that would make the tax receipt extracted by the central Commonwealth government from the Concessionary Port of Serampore be 6.33 million people * kr. 4.85 per capita * 12%/3 = 1.23 million kroner per year.
