Synopsis
It has been 33 years since the Cold War ended and the USSR collapsed. It was believed that global peace would be achieved once the conflict was over. However, it never became so. As the Second Cold War is looming, countries across the world are nervous. With the Global War on Terrorism and the Great Recession, the global balance is hanging on a thread. It is a matter of time before even WW3 breaks out.

Intro
Welcome to "2024: Cold Interbellum", an AH/MT RP set in 2024. In this RP, you take control of a nation and manage it with skill. Diplomacy and war is present here, so be more wise and don't do mistakes. That's the last thing your nation want.

While I would like to see some real-life nations (save for communist Russia and democratic China), other countries such as Czechoslovakia or a constitutionally monarchist Romania are allowed. I want this RP to be like "2021: A New Decade" and "2024: The Long Peace".

Backstory

The 1950s saw deterioration in Sino-Soviet relations after the USSR entered peaceful coexistence with the Western Bloc, which China (PRC) decried as "revisionist". The tensions were so bad that the two countries began drifting towards war. Such war wouldn't start until 1969, when a small-scale border conflict between the two countries escalated into a full-scale war. This war, dubbed the Sino-Soviet Border War, saw the Soviet military invading both Xinjiang and Northeast China. Since China was both experiencing the Cultural Revolution and recovering from the disastrous Great Leap Forward, the USSR had the upper hand in the conflict as the Chinese forces didn't stand a chance against their Soviet counterparts. Eventually, the war ended in Soviet victory. The aftermath was more disastrous for China, who not only had to deal with destroyed infrastructure and heavy military casualties, but also had to cede both Xinjiang and Heilongjiang to the USSR, who is now the dominant power in the Eastern Bloc. Following this, the USSR reorganized both provinces as the Uyghur ASSR and the Harbin Oblast. This loss would come to haunt China for decades.

Meanwhile, events such as the Moon Landing, the Watergate scandal and the Vietnam War occur as they did IRL. However, two years after the Sino-Soviet Border War, China was suffering too much from increased instability, both political and military, that it had to let go of Tibet, which results in the latter gaining back its independence after 12 years of Chinese occupation. China would also try to increase military spending, although this leads to economic growth being much slower than IRL. On the other hand, decolonization ensues in Africa, although conflict and repression would emerge shortly thereafter.

In 1979, the Islamic Revolution breaks out in Iran, resulting in the country becoming a Shia Islamist theocracy, which then leads to US embassy staff being taken hostage by the new government. In the 1980s, anti-communist protests erupt across Eastern Europe, just as Chernobyl suffers from a nuclear meltdown in 1986.

The year 1989, aside from the end of communist rule in Eastern Europe, would see the horrific Tiananmen Square Massacre, where the PLA kills thousands of civilians. The aftermath is much more severe, due to the massacre having caused less general trust in the Chinese government, as well as more protests across the country. As a result, the CPC elects Nu Leiying, a low-ranking government official, to serve as China's new paramount leader, as the party believed the public would trust a not-so-known official. However, the CPC are not aware of the fact that Nu deeply resents both the party and communism at large, due to him having lost his family and friends during the Great Leap Forward. As a result, he began embracing democratic socialism and planned on bringing down the CPC. Together with some friends in the CPC, Nu began a silent purge against high-ranking officials, including those responsible for the Tiananmen Square Massacre. He also had many protest leaders and pro-democracy activists pardoned in order to gain trust from the pro-democracy movement. Deng Xiaoping was also arrested during the purge. Once the purge ended in 1990, Nu officially dissolves the CPC and forms a new democratic socialist party called the "Shehuidang" (SHD). He began freeing China from communist influence and implementing democratic reforms, as well as building better relations with Taiwan (ROC), mostly in order to make Chinese reunification a reality. Meanwhile, China supports the US-led coalition during the Persian Gulf War. After three years of negotiation, China and Taiwan is reunified as the Republic of China. This new ROC has the same type of government with five branches existing alongside a President, while a two-party system exists with both the KMT and the SHD as the dominant parties. Since then, power has switched between both parties through election just like how power in USA switches between Democrats and Republicans. On the other hand, Taiwan becomes a SAR (special administrative region) with its own parties and more political autonomy, while Hong Kong remains as a British overseas territory and Macau eventually becoming an independent state with membership in the CPLP (Community of Portuguese Language Countries). Korea remains divided between North Korea and South Korea, albeit China has since 1990 placed diplomatic and economic sanctions on North Korea.

Meanwhile, the Cold War ends in 1991 with the dissolution of the USSR. Despite this outcome, the Russian Federation only lasted until 1993, when Boris Yeltsin gets overthrown by a new communist force called the "Communist Party of Russia" (KPR), which is led by a high-ranking KGB official named Ivan Zakhaev. Following this coup, which happened in the middle of a constitutional crisis, the Russian Federation is rebranded as the "Russian People's Federation" (Российская Народная Федерация/Rossiyskaya Narodnaya Federatsiya), which adopts certain elements of the old PRC, such as a socialist market economy and many government-approved organizations. As a result, Russia faces a wave of anti-communist protests, which are led by a pro-democratic organization called "Free Russia" (Свободная Россия/Svobodnaya Rossiya). Despite this wave, the new communist regime is fully capable of cracking down on these protests and arresting several protesters without issue. This causes many democratic elements of Russian society to flee to Kaliningrad Oblast, who quickly declares independence as the "Republic of Kalinia" (Республика Калиния/Respublika Kaliniya). A large portion of the Baltic Fleet defects to the new country and reforms itself as the Kalinian Navy, while the smaller portion remains loyal to Russia and uses St. Petersburg as the fleet's new HQ. Even the Russian Orthodox Church and some political parties defects to Kalinia, with Free Russia, now based there, fully reorganizing itself as a political party advocating for pro-Western policies. This diplomatic conflict remains active to this day.

In Southern Europe, the Yugoslav Wars (1991-1999) occur as they did IRL, albeit some differences. While Croatia, Slovenia, Kosovo and North Macedonia remains the same (with Kosovo becoming independent by 1999), both Bosnia-Herzegovina and what's left of Yugoslavia are different. Yugoslavia, now composed of Serbia, Montenegro and North Kosovo, is still a communist state as of 2024, albeit it is now ruled by a new party called the "Workers' Party of Yugoslavia" (Радничка Партија Југославије/Radnička Partija Jugoslavije/RPJ). On the other hand, Bosnia-Herzegovina is divided into two countries, the Serb Republic (Република Српска/Republika Srpska), aka Serbland, and the Croat-Muslim Federation (Hrvatsko-Muslimanska Federacija), aka Bosnia. The former is an ethnically Serb unitary state that controls Republika Srpska, Brčko District, Posavina Canton, Bosnian-Podrinje Canton Goražde, Ravno (which is part of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton) and a part of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County (which borders Ravno), while the latter is a predominantly Muslim federal republic that controls Sarajevo Canton (including Sarajevo), Canton 10, Tuzla Canton, Zenica-Doboj Canton, Una-Sana Canton, Central Bosnia Canton, West Herzegovina Canton and Herzegovina-Neretva Canton (excluding Ravno). The Republic of Vojvodina, formed in 1995, is an independent state that resembles Bosnia-Herzegovina by being ethnically composed of Serbs, Croats, Hungarians, Slovaks, Romanians and Pannonian Rusyns (aka "Pannonians").

The 9/11 attacks occur as they did IRL, followed by the War on Terror, the US-led invasion of Afghanistan and the controversial Iraq War. Later on, the Great Recession occurs, which sees the US nearly lose its status as the only superpower in the world. The Arab Spring would eventually spark the Syrian Civil War and then Euromaidan occurs. Once Euromaidan resulted in Ukraine leaving the Russian sphere of influence, Russia invades and annexes Crimea. Shortly thereafter, pro-Russian uprising breaks out in eastern Ukraine. In 2016, Russia purchases both Ida-Viruu County and Lääne-Viruu County from Estonia, much to the anger of the EU. As a result of the Donbass War, Ukraine formally names itself the "Western Republic of Ukraine" (Західна Республіка Україна/Zakhidna Respublika Ukrayina) as a sign of joining the West. Meanwhile, protests breaks out in Belarus, a "Sovereign People's Republic" (SPR) within Russia since 1996, after the Belarusian government proposes a very controversial law.

Brexit, the European migrant crisis and the Venezuelan crisis, as well as political polarization in the US, occurs as they did IRL.

Domestic Issues: Ethnic separatism and political dissent
Foreign Issues: Kalinian independence, Western imperialism, territorial disputes and international sanctions

History: Same as IRL with some minor changes in 1969, followed by major ones several years later.

In 1969, a border conflict between the USSR and the PRC eventually turns into an all-out war, which resulted in Soviet victory. Following this, the USSR annexes both Xinjiang (as Uyghur ASSR) and Heilongjiang (as Harbin Oblast). The aftermath also weakened China, who was already both experiencing the Cultural Revolution and recovering from the Great Leap Forward. On the other hand, the USSR (and later Russia) would be locked in a conflict with Uyghur separatists in Xinjiang.

In 1993, during a constitutional crisis, Boris Yeltsin is overthrown by the Communist Party of Russia (KPR), which was formed by Ivan Zakhaev, a high-ranked KGB officer, as a successor to the CPSU. Following the coup, the KPR reformed the Russian Federation as the Russian People's Federation, which incorporates some elements of the defunct PRC, including a socialist market economy and many government-approved organizations (ranging from political parties to religious organizations). However, the remnants of the Russian Federation fled to Kaliningrad Oblast, which was subsequently declared independent from Russia as the Republic of Kalinia. With this, the Baltic Fleet is subsequently split between Kalinia and Russia, with only a smaller fraction of the fleet remaining loyal towards Russia, while a larger fraction defected and later reformed itself as the Kalinian Navy. At the same time, both ground and air forces present in Kalinia would reform themselves as the Kalinian Army and the Kalinian Air Force, respectively. Ever since this event, conflict has been brewing between Russia and Kalinia, while Kalinia continues to serve as a sanctuary for pro-democracy activists who had fled Russia. Mikhail Gorbachev, the final ruler of the USSR, was among those who fled to Kalinia following the KPR-led coup d'etat (mainly due to the KPR considering him to be responsible for the downfall of the USSR).

In 1994, both Abkhazia and South Ossetia join Russia as autonomous republics, although the latter merged with North Ossetia to simply form Ossetia.

By 1995, Russia was able to recover its Soviet-era GDP per capita levels, mainly thanks to the economics reforms that were implemented by the KPR two years earlier.

In 1996, Russia and Belarus was holding talks about cooperation between the two countries. The talks results in Belarus willingly joining Russia as a "sovereign people's republic" (SPR), which was some type of a very autonomous republic (similar to a SAR), with Alexander Lukashenko as President.

In 1997, three bombs explodes on three buses in Ürümqi, Xinjiang (now called the Uyghur Republic or simply Uyghuristan), killing nine people (including three children) and injuring 28 more. Uyghur separatists claimed responsibility for the bombings, citing them as retribution for the execution of 30 suspected separatists and the subsequent Gulja Incident, where nine protesters were killed by Russian security forces.

In 1998, ethnic Georgians launch an insurgency in Abkhazia, which is crushed by the Russian military within a week. At the same time, the Russian government forms a technology conglomerate named "Tenchengsky", which is obviously a Russian version of our world's Tencent.

From 1999 to 2000, Russia invaded and then annexed the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria following the Islamist invasion of Dagestan. Low-level insurgency would continue until 2017.

In 2000, Gennady Yanayev, who briefly served as the head of the USSR during the failed August Coup and subsequently succeeded Ivan Zakhaev (who was dying at the time) as the Secretary-General of the KPR, is officially elected President of Russia. Following his election, Gennady promises to continue Ivan's policies and appoints Vladimir Putin as Premier. Two months later, Ivan Zakhaev dies and is given a state funeral.

In 2002, Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan forms the Common Defense Pact (CDP).

Between 2003 and 2007, Gennady implemented several reforms, which includes relaxed relations with the West, active Russian participation in the US-led ISAF and creation of new infrastructure in several Russian cities designed to attract both entrepreneurs and established high-tech companies to Russia. Despite this, the Russian economy remains socialist and Russia is still engaging in territorial disputes with China, Japan and Georgia. Russia also starts to invest in European countries, especially Ukraine, Serbia (Republika Srpska) and, to a lesser extent, Kalinia.

In 2008, war breaks out between Russia and Georgia over the control of both Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Lasting for twelve days, the war ends in Russian victory. However, economic crisis hits Russia at the same time (due to the Great Recession that began in 2007). Protests erupts across Russia as a result. The economic crisis would last until 2009, while Gennady Yanayev steps down as President and gets succeeded by Dmitri Medvedev.

In 2010, Gennady dies and is given a state funeral as a result of his contribution to Russia and its people.

In 2012, Dmitri is succeeded by Sasha Yenkov, who implements a new state ideology called "Yenkovism" (which is a Russian version of the Xi Jinping Thought). Since assuming power, Sasha has introduced far-ranging measures to enforce party discipline and impose internal unity. Sasha has Vladimir Putin appointed as Premier again.

In 2013, Euromaidan takes place in Ukraine, which causes Russian influence in the country to decrease significantly.

In 2014, as a response to Euromaidan, the Russian military invades and occupies the Crimean Peninsula, while pro-Russian uprising occurs in eastern Ukraine. Subsequently, Crimea and Sevastopol officially joins Russia, while Donetsk Oblast and Luhansk Oblast secedes from Ukraine. This results in both diplomatic and economic sanctions being imposed on Russia. Despite these sanctions, many Western companies are able to find profit in Russia, which is mainly due to Russia being more stronger than IRL (so the sanctions only annoys it at the moment) and that the Russian market is just as strong as the real-world Chinese market.

In 2015, pro-Russian uprising spreads to Kharkiv Oblast and Sumy Oblast. Both are subsequently annexed by Russia two years later. Also, Russia began to invest in Africa, Iran, Mongolia and South America in the form of a global infrastructure development strategy dubbed the "Global Benefit Initiative" (Инициатива Глобальной Выгоды/Initsiativa Global'noy Vygody/IGV).

In 2016, in order expand the Baltic Fleet, Russia purchases both Ida-Viruuma and Lääne-Viruuma from Estonia, which leads to further conflict with the EU. At the same time, Russia is accused of interfering with the 2016 US Presidential Election, which it fiercely denies.

In 2019, the Legislative Council of Belarus proposes a controversial extradition bill, that makes it possible for Russian authorities to extradit fugitives from Belarus. This causes massive protests across Belarus, which becomes more violent as time passes. Controversy further ensues as an eSports player is punished by Blizzard for voicing his support of the Belarusian protests. Following this, criticism gets directed at Western companies who are basically pandering to Russia due to profit, which is followed by boycott and concern from foreign governments. At the same time, Russia began setting up re-education camps in Uyghuristan and placing Uyghurs, Kazakhs and other Muslim groups there.

In 2020, the Supreme Assembly passes a "National Security Law", which causes further diplomatic controversy. At the same time, the re-education camps causes more controversy and leads to further condemnation from many governments, although some countries voices their support for Russia and its "counter-terrorist measures", which includes the re-education camps. Near the end of 2020, Russia sends peacekeeping troops to Nagorno-Karabakh when war breaks out between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Between 2021 and 2024, protests have grown exponentially across Belarus, with some Belarusians calling for secession from Russia. In response to this, the Russian military declares martial law in Belarus with the blessing of Alexander Lukashenko.

The year is now 2024 and Russia shall achieve its goals, be it the easy way or the hard way.

RP Example(s): I am the OP here.

Northumbria is most likely to not be an independent state since the UK still exists.

The existence of Northumbria is not necessarily incompatible with that of the UK.

This looks interesting

I'm just curious about something in the OP, how come China never took control over Hong Kong and Macau?

And follow up to that, how come Tawian is a SAR?

First off, China would have taken control of Hong Kong and Macau, but didn't because of reasons I haven't come up with yet. I hope there is a reasonable answer for this.

Second, Taiwan is home to the Taiwanese independence movement (just like IRL), so it is a SAR in order for the DPP and other Taiwanese nationalist parties to have political representation there alongside those who advocate for Chinese reunification.

History:

  • Trump loses 2016 elections to Hillary Clinton, but Republicans retained control of both Congressional chambers.
  • Clinton does not pull the US out of Paris Climate Agreement and does not start trade wars. A bipartisan infrastructure bill is approved, but the budget allocated is limited. Other than this bill, Clinton fails to achieve much due to political gridlock and GOP control of Congress.
  • In 2018 the Republicans managed to keep their control of the House of Representatives due to advantage over incumbent President's party and because many Democratic voters had been disappointed by the lackluster performance of Clinton.
  • Jeb Bush becomes GOP nominee for President after a heated and divisive primary. He was selected mostly because a) after three presidential defeats, many GOP voters prioritized electability over ideological alignment and b) the moderate side of the GOP unified behind him while the hard right wing vote was split between three different candidates.
  • In order to unify the party, Jeb picks Ted Cruz as his VP nominee.
  • Jeb Bush wins 2020 elections and Republicans expand their seats in the House of Representatives. He proceeds to raise the retirement age from 65 to 68, repeal Obamacare, reduce tax rates for businesses and individuals, increase the standard deduction and family tax credits, reduce the alternative minimum tax for individuals and eliminate it for corporations and reduce the number of estates impacted by the estate tax. He takes the US out of the Paris Climate Accord, imposes renewed sanctions on Iran, recognizes Jerusalem as capital of Israel and surges the number of troops in Afghanistan.
  • In 2022 Republicans retain control of the House of Representatives but by a slim margin.
  • Jeb Bush plans to pursue a second term.

China includes Taiwan, but Tibet, Hong Kong and Macau aren't part of China. Maybe update the territory so your reservation gets noted.
