Also, you're going to need to get on the Discord that I sent you the link for if you want to effectively work on this plot that your character is involved in. Much of the coordination with Tau (who is the other Peruvian rebel player) and myself (who is responding to his moves as US / Peruvian government NPCs) is on there. This coordination also includes rolls that influence the outcome of military actions and battles.

Alright, I'll change it. Peruvian People's Army acronym is EPP by the way.

++ CHARACTER PROFILE; <Insert Character Full Name>
++ Civilians

++ Name: Jonathan Wilson
++ Appearance:
Image

++ Role: ++ Civilians (private investigator/detective)

++ Age: 35
++ Gender: Male
++ Nationality: American
++ Residence: Unity Base - Occidental System Habitat - Mars
++ Affiliation: Freelancer

++ Build: 1.80m/71k
++ Cybernetics / Genetic Enhancements: None - He believes his 'natural genius' is more than enough.
++ Equipment: Whiskey, magnifying glass, pistol

++ Skills:

  • Art of deduction: Jonathan seems able to make complex deductions about someone or something from seemingly simple and quick observations.
  • Scanner: If there is a clue hidden somewhere inside a room, Jonathan will find out about it. He is able to 'scan' a crime scene and discover evidence that others would miss.
  • Master of psychology: Jonathan knows how to read body language, and he can use this to his advantage. He can easily tell when someone is lying or hiding something.
  • Connecting the dots: Jonathan is able to connect evidence, clues, testimonies and observations to uncover greater truths. He is able to see connections where other men see nothing.
++ Weaknesses:

  • Obsessive: When Jonathan stumbles upon a case, it isn't simply a job for him; he becomes obsessed with it, and his obsession gets worse the longer it takes to solve the case. He does not sleep, he does not eat, he does not rest until he can solve the case.
  • Narcissist: Jonathan believes he is the best damn detective to have ever existed, and he is not shy about it. He is also quick to dismiss others and refuses help. Needless to say that this quality does not endear himself to others.
  • Anti-social: "Friends? Why I would be friends with people of lowly intelligence that cannot comprehend the world around them?"

++ Personality:

Jonathan has been described as 'obsessively brilliant at his job' but also 'narcissistic and utterly devoid of social skills' Jonathan has a way to piss off people with his dismissive attitude, rudeness, sarcasm and social ineptitude. Very few people manage to get close to him and no one really knows him well. He is an enigma, the 'weirdo Sherlock Holmes wannabe' (as a police officer called him). A lover of mysteries and mind games who becomes obsessed with his cases, he has very little life outside of his line of work. When he is assigned a case, he thinks constantly about it and obsesses over it; he can remain up for two or three days because he is too obsessed with finding clues and making connections. He likes to take cases in order to challenge himself, as a form of mental stimulation. Without something to stimulate his mind, he feels he is going to go crazy.

++ Biography:

Born in Austin, Texas in 21 April 2054, Jonathan was born to a middle-class family. His father was a university professor (medieval history) while his mother worked in an office as a secretary. At school, he was distant and had very few friends. On the other hand, he excelled academically. In his spare time, he loved to read Sherlock Holmes novels and to imagine himself as a detective. It was because of this, and his excellent observational skills, that he trained in criminal justice at university and got a bachelor's degree in that field.

While he could work in a police department, Jonathan preferred the independence of being a private investigator. Gaining the necessary license from the state authorities, he opened an office. As a young investigator without much of a record, he wouldn't have all that much of a chance to make a name if not for the aid of his father. His father was a personal friend of a corporate CEO, whose company had suffered from an inside theft. He managed to convince him to give Jonathan a chance. Reluctantly, the CEO did so and Jonathan proved his worth by solving the case.

This allowed him to find work in various corporations for a period of two years before he undertook his first murder case. It was unlike all his past cases, but what he always wanted to do (he never really liked working as a corporate investigator). A family friend was the one who asked him to do so. The police had closed the case without finding the murderer, so the man hoped that Jonathan could take a look at the case. Finding evidence that the police missed, Jonathan was able to close the case. Taking notice of his achievement, the local police department offered to hire him as a private consultant on individual cases, and Jonathan accepted this offer. As a consultant, he managed to solve tens of murder cases and became a local celebrity.

That was the case until six months ago. Budget cuts meant that his consulting job had to go, though Jonathan suspected it had something to do with him pissing off the new police Captain. As he had focused on his consulting job, his private investigator office had been neglected and Jonathan began having financial troubles; he was forced to sell his office and was effectively unemployed.

Two months ago, Jonathan got a call from a lawyer who informed him that his uncle Michael had passed out and in his will had left him a modest amount of cash and a flat in the Unity Base - Occidental System Habitat on Mars. Having no future on Earth, Jonathan decided to sell his (Earth) house and travel to Mars. Today is his first day on the red planet...

So, advanced is genetic modifications and nanotech in this universe? Been playing the new Resident Evil game and I think I've got a fun duo character idea regarding a mad scientist/experiment combo.

Genetic modification is pretty far along, nanotech decently so. And we could use more characters like that, that are characters doing stuff in the world rather than necessarily tied to big political institutions, etc.

++ CHARACTER PROFILE; Julie Skrine
++ Techie

++ Name: Julie Skrine
++ Appearance:
Image

++ Role: Techie
++ Age: 26
++ Gender: Female
++ Nationality: American
++ Residence: Bremond Corporate Colony, Texas
++ Affiliation: Calvert Nanotechnologies Inc.

++ Build: 5'6" - 115 lbs, lean and somewhat athletic
++ Cybernetics / Genetic Enhancements: N/A
++ Equipment:

- Easterly Spectre 7th Gen - A state-of-the-art "laptop" that Julie saved up for years to purchase. She also has her standard Calvert computer dedicated to work, but it's the Easterly that she uses for play. Of course, in 2089, laptops don't really exist anymore - the Easterly is slightly larger around than an old US quarter and only marginally thicker. Capable of running at a staggering 2.2 EHz, it is one of the best units available to the civilian market, and is Julie's most prized possession. She's also programmed it to provide a cyber personality in the form of Spiro, an aging Greek man who has come under the erroneous impression that Julie is his niece.

- Sig Sauer P8200 - A fairly standard sidearm, chambered in .45 ACP. If only Julie knew how to use it.

- Royal Enfield Folding Bullet 800E '81 Model - The classic 20th century motorbike reimagined for the 2080's, the new Bullet is a folding electrical motorbike with top-shelf speed and acceleration, hitting 0-60 mph in 1.76 seconds and capable of up to 265 mph. The 800E can be a beast to control around tight turns and is generally marketed towards experienced drivers - but Julie has been a bike girl all her life and can handle it as well anyone. It would be way out of her price range, but the bike was an inheritance from her father.

++ Skills: Julie is well-versed in the intricacies of nanotechnology and the construction of nanites - although she did not attend college, she did complete a two-year program at a trade school where she studied exactly this. Her professional experience till now has also been centered around the same. Secondly, her fascination with computers and the internet, which she was introduced to at a young age by her father, has led to the development of her skills in programming and hacking. She has yet to attempt anything truly illegal or ambitious, but she has a great deal of raw talent when working on the Easterly.

++ Weaknesses: Julie is close to useless in a combat scenario, as she lacks any such training or the instincts to apply it properly.
++ Personality: Cautious. Having lost her mother fifteen years ago, her father more recently and with a little brother that's nowhere to be found, Julie finds herself more or less alone, with few friends to stave off isolation. Though not politically active, she finds herself on the outside looking in on regime-friendly circles inhabited by old classmates, and this colors most of her social interactions. She can be warm, sweet and engaging when she has the inclination, but finds that she feels mired in career and social stagnation, with no discernable way to cut through the monotony of everyday life. A sense of alienation, once dormant, has been growing in the back of her mind.

++ Biography: Born high in the Sierra Nevada in Bishop, California, Julie's early childhood came just as the Occidental System began to truly consolidate its power, provoking high tensions across North America. Both her parents were accomplished researchers who had risen from working class backgrounds - Sara Skrine, (nee Cash) who worked in genetics, and Thomas Skrine, who specialized in nanotech. Both were considered brilliant names in their respective fields and were highly sought after in the corporate world. Julie experienced a happy, stable upbringing, especially after her little brother Kellen came along four years after her. Politics never entered into family life. If the Skrines were less than enthused about the government's increasing overreach, at least it was more efficient than the spiraling disfunction of the old America, and life remained comfortable for a family of their means. Why complain?

Things began to take a turn in 2071, when Julie's mother was diagnosed with stage 3 lymphoma, which may have arisen from her exposure to certain chemicals at the U.S. Army's Gene Research Lab in Bakersfield. At the same time, her father's nanotechnology startup Skrine & Huynh was becoming wildly successful, pioneering advances in the use of nanite probes, which soon became par for the course in asteroid mining.

The Skrines moved to the Houston Metroplex, both to obtain the best possible medical care for Sara, and to open new corporate offices for S&H. But the sprawling mega-city, which had even eclipsed Chicago, proved the family's undoing. That same year, Julie's paternal uncle, Michael Skrine, was linked to anti-government militia groups in Nevada. Shortly thereafter, he was killed in a shootout with agents of the Occidental Security Administration in Reno, along with several cousins. The entire Skrine family came under immediate suspicion from the OSA, nevermind that Thomas and Michael had never been close as brothers. Julie's mother's treatment at the best Houston hospitals was nixed - she died six months later. S&H suffered a bad product release and was strong-armed into a buyout by the much larger Calvert Nanotechnologies.

Thomas Skrine fell into an abysmal depression during the following years, turning to the bottle in the futile search for solace. The one thing that motivated him was his daughter's obvious delight with computers, which he fostered to the best of his declining ability. Eschewing college despite strong grades, Julie attended a Houston-area trade school, where she studied her father's line of work and honed her hacking skills on the side, pulling petty internet pranks with an increasingly small circle of friends.

Her father died shortly after Julie received her associate's degree. She accepted a position with Calvert, which by 2083 had nearly cornered the nanotech market in North America, and had grown to be the 8th-largest corporation in the Occidental System. Despite her misgivings about working for the company that had gobbled up her father's enterprise, Julie was enticed to accept Calvert's offer of relatively high starting pay and generous benefits. Calvert had noticed her obvious talent and was prepared to compensate her accordingly, and Julie had few other economic prospects or connections to help her.

Julie's younger brother Kellen had taken a different path, descending into troublemaking and petty crime since their mother's death. After their father was laid to rest in 2083, Kellen disappeared, fueling much speculation as to his whereabouts. Some say he was taken by the OSA, while others close to him and Julie insist he fled to one of Mexico's cities and is now involved with the growing movement known as the Asylum. Either way, Julie has all but given hope of finding him, choosing instead to keep her head down and endure life with Calvert.

Potentially. The main thing to ask yourself is what you want to do with this character.

Sure, you could just apply as that character right now and maybe get accepted, but there's not really any active plotlines that are following high ranking military officers. It's also harder to say, start a war to facilitate military officers having something to do compared to finding a workable plotline for someone like a cyberpunk on the street or a mercenary that can join any low level conflict, or a civilian that has plenty of things to get up to without even leaving a certain megalopolis.

So it's not a no, but I'd like to know what the plan is for the character so they don't just end up sitting around doing nothing once accepted.

Going to go ahead and drop a tag. Can't get a proper app up yet due to irl responsibilities whopping my backside for the time being, but am considering either a techie out of India with a bit of a history linking her to the guerilla groups there, or something to do with a faction (round of exasperated sighs all round, I know) made up of an independent Martian colony run as a theocracy around a new transhumanist religion focused on using technology to allow humans to feel one another's emotions and usher in a new age of understanding. Am probably leaning more towards the techie at this point, all things considered.

Edit: Re: that OS officer idea. Could they be attached to the ACU unit perhaps? Just figured I'd try and be helpful :3

More tech characters is nice but I can actually work with either idea, we don't really have much going when it comes to doing things in space right now so exploring Martian colonization more is a good angle.

As for the officer thing, depends on how high APH wants to go with his character because the ACU action is following personnel with more on the ground ranks compared to like, generals, etc. Not impossible to have an officer attached to that though.

Yeah, I was thinking that space seemed a bit quiet. Will think about it, though am a bit worried there won't be much character interaction with the good ol' space church. Maybe if I apped a missionary or somesuch.

Alright, got ideas for two potential characters that I'm still fleshing out at the moment. I'm sharing them here so I can get some opinions on them and so be able to get a clearer vision of what I want to do with them:

1. Freelancer reverse engineer working for Daiwa Corporation - I haven't fleshed this character much yet, but I was thinking that part of their backstory is that they were involved in some of the shady stuff the company does, including corporate theft and espionage in which they had directly participated. Since exposure of the truth would reveal the extensive industrial crimes this character had participated in, they have more than enough reason to want to help preserve Daiwa's reputation, even if it means further delving into the criminal underworld.

2. A hacker character in Novus Ordo Seclorum - this one I'm having trouble with. I'm split between two directions for this one, though both share a common background in that they work for the Houston office of the Occidental Security Agency as a low-ranking electronic surveillance agent: (a) a secret sympathizer for The Asylum who idealistically believes in their goal or (b) a young ambitious agent who poses as a sympathizer but is actually out to discover and expose the identity of the group.

My IRL politics are simple: anti-Chinese Communist Party. If a view is anti-CCP, no matter how bad it is, that's my view.

They still exist, however, their status is greatly reduced compared to present day as one of the main initiatives with Mexico joining the OS was American resources (including military ones) being directed towards fighting the cartels. To an extent, a fair amount of power was also moved to OS institutions and away from local ones that are more prone to getting bribed by these cartels. Basically, imagine the difference between the Yakuza now and the Yakuza before Japanese law started cracking down on them.
Castelia wrote:snip

Either of these should actually work, I should mention that a couple players are working on something for the Black Company flashpoint behind the scenes and they're both doing characters that have the intention of screwing the company. So you might find good company interacting with their characters, whether it's flipping sides and exposing shit or working to prevent them from doing so.

Novus Ordo Seclorum is a bit more sandbox but also a viable destination. It's going to have a more vague start when I officially get it going but the actions by the Asylum and some others will open up new opportunities for everyone else in the Houston area (hackers, OSA members, etc) to act in favor of one side of the dissidents vs authority conflict or the other.

It's not too hard, have a look at the timeline to get an idea of what the setting is by 2089 and then see if anything strikes you fancy in the character roles section. The second post also has the list of ongoing flashpoints, although you can do things outside of these.
