Name: Calavera
Age: Unknown (But 70 for the admin's sake)
Appearance: He wears a very wide brimmed hat and a tattered poncho and boots that look like they were made from snakeskin. His skin is stretched tightly across his face, and his eyes are sunken — he looks less than human. There are marks below his eyes that look like three black dots you would find on a sugar skull, they may be birthmarks, tattoos, or paint. Nobody really knows. His hands have similarly stretched out skin, and are very bony. He is hunched over and looks very old but nobody knows how old he really is.

Place of Birth: Mojave Desert, nearish to Las Vegas (only big city I could find in the Mojave desert) but on the California side
Relatives: All dead
Previous professions: A coach protecter (guarding against highwaymen) and then part of the Mexican Army in the Mexican-American war

First impressions: Mysterious, spooky, loner
Personality: Very quiet, when he talks, he is very mysterious
Opinion of other characters: I'm first!
Opinion of the mission: Another job, and maybe a way to find the Tohono. (This will make sense when you read my bio)
Employment history: He was hunting for the Tohono, and one of the War Department's heads, Matthew J. Callahan, was attacked by bandits. Calavera saw them from a ridge, and called down to the bandits to leave Callahan alone. When they didn't leave, Calavera used his powers and sent all of them running, but Callahan was injured and couldn't run. Calavera stopped his powers and helped Callahan. He realized Calavera was a homme extraordinaire, and he asked Calavera to help the government find others. Calavera agreed. Another job.

Power/drawbacks:

Powers: He can create images of ghosts or monsters using the fears of the people he's attacking, a power he calls "the Haunt". He creates their noises and their horrifying images and they send people screaming. They call him the "King of Ghosts" in the Mojave.

Drawbacks: The Haunt scares everyone around him, including his teammates, so it is better used when he is alone. Also, people can resist it if they know what's coming or are very strong willed. Someone that has lost everything, like him, also isn't susceptible to the Haunt if they have gotten over their loss completely.

Equipment: A poncho, a hat, dirty clothes, a whiskey flask with a saguaro cactus engraved on it, a bowie knife, a pistol (Colt .44), a satchel with some food and a guitar.

Bio: At the age of seven, his family was killed in a Comanche raid on his village in retaliation for some people from his village murdering 40 Comanche children. he went to live in a mission in the desert, still grieving for his family, but was repeatedly beaten by the priest. Calavera let go of his family and resigned to his fate of servitude, but decided he wanted to take out his pent up grief and anger on those who do bad in the world. Originally a normal man, he became a carriage protector, fighting off bandits and highwaymen. When the Mexican-American war came around, he enlisted in the Mexican Army (California was a part of Mexico then) and fought at the Alamo and Goliad. However, on a mission with his squad team, they were ambushed by Comanches and most were killed. Calavera escaped into Southern Arizona. His horse died in the heat of the Sonoran, and he was very, very close to death, but he came across a Tohono O'odham hunter, who took Calavera back to the Tohono camp. Calavera rested but contracted a very, very bad disease and the healer didn't know how to save him. She took him across the desert to the Baboquivari Peak to find an old shaman who claimed he was I'itoi, the Elder Brother, who created earth. I'itoi healed Calavera, but noticed that Calavera had powers he didn't know he had, and trained Calavera in how to use them. Calavera rode off to the Comanche camp, now with many of the original raiders long dead, and slaughtered every single person with a machete, a pistol, and their greatest fears hijacking their minds. Then he went to the mission, but the priest was dead. Calavera dug up the priest's grave and crushed the priest's bones and scattered them in the desert for the vultures to pick at. Calavera then saved the War Department guy and joined the team, see my above answer

Edited!

Yes, this is exactly what I meant; him having a power and a shaman helping him to realise it is perfect, thank you. In that case, happily accepted!

Also, don't worry about the age. We can say that his powers make him somewhat more spirited and lively than his contemporaries, that's fine.

Yay! So excited. Also I'itoi is part of RL Tohono O'odham mythology, in case that affects anything.

So, while I think the character is good, I feel that his powers and his backstory might be a bit of work. So, having the ability to kill on demand with the maggots is somewhat overpowered, especially since it leaves no defence. Being able to use it on 10 people at the same time, as well, is quite powerful. However, I don't really see how we can balance it without the power becoming too niche or too situational. The power, perhaps, does not really slot into the setting too well. If you want me to brainstorm with you about a more appropriate power, I am here for it.

Also, and this is more of a personal point, the sexual assault trope of having a wife commit suicide is a bit tricky. It's not really an issue of realism, but it puts me off.

Hmmm. Do you think that summoning a swarm of bugs, that can only attack one person at a time, and that someone can fight off, would work?

And I might just have the angry mob kill the wife instead, serves the same purpose in the storyline.

That's pretty Old Testament, I like it. In any christian nation, that would earn you a name for yourself. We'd have to look into what kinds of insects, or if we want to broaden that to all arthropods. Would be fun to see you chucking scorpions at people, although I dread the thought of spiders.

The Black Remnant wrote:Hello there!

I saw this in the latest topics, and albeit I've not been in a superhero RP for some time(this is a puppet of an older nation), I'd like to spitball four different powers on my mind:

Umbrakinesis: Manipulation of shadows. A primarily stealth-based ability, requiring patches of darkness and enabling the ability to essentially "hide" in someone's shadow.

Bodily Transmutation: In effect, all mass originating from the user's body can be transmuted at will. Can't form complex mechanisms, and requires equivalent mass to produce(an anvil would need the mass of an anvil, for example).

String manipulation: A bit of a fun one, basically anything that can be identified or considered analouge to a "string", ranging from actual string to chains and barbed wire, can be manipulated within a certain range.

Spin: This one's basically a jojo reference. The user can manipulate the rotational energy of objects around them, enabling a variety of niche applications.

All them look good! Umbrakinesis is something I like, since it's one of the powers in the Shadow Campaign series by Django Wexler. Bodily transmutation could be a bit whacky, but it's also broadly useful, which is nice. String manipulation sounds like a nightmare, especially with barbed wire. Better hope he's not around for the First World War...

Spin you would have to explain a bit more. So, would they be able to make things spin? Or alter the spin of spinning things?

It's not my heritage, but one of my friends is Tohono (half). I just got into writing it and started researching the lore more to write my bio.

Spin is bascially manipulation of rotational energy, both giving and taking it away to both immobile and spinning objects. The object in question could range from a boomerang, to a wheel, to even dust.

With backstories, I kinda figured the following, so judge whichever fits:
Umbrakinesis; Crime Family's hitman, snuck up on people and whacked em before literally running into the shadows to escape. Was offered time out of jail to work with the US.
Body Transmutation: Gold Digger from california that learned he could transmute small parts of his body into gold nuggets. Got caught and forcefully dragged into this nonsense.
String Manipulation: Ex-Cowboy from the Fence Cutting Wars(The barbed wire manipulation came in handy there), found work with the US secret witch thing.
Spin: A notorious gambler who always managed to get the perfect dice rolls. Turns out, he was subconsciously(and later consciously) manipulating the rotation of every gambling device he worked with (Dice, Roulette tables, etc). Realized the fact he was a cheat, and decided to try and atone by doing "good for the country".

Synopsis: An alternate timeline of Hollow Knight where the Ancient Civilization never fell, living in the Abyss as a small but still potent power, with associated ramifications for Hallownest as a whole.

Alright! Those all sound really interesting indeed, and selling gold made from your own body sounds horrific.

A note for everyone: The War Department frequently blackmails people into working for them, so if you want to have your characters there against their will, because, for example, the US government holds large amounts of debt owed by then, that would be fine too.

Application
Name: Isaac Berkowitz
Age: 45
Appearance: A 5' 8", greying man with a receding hairline, long beard, and many scars and wrinkles. Has a distinguished aquiline nose and sad brown eyes. Wears a long black cloak, a black top hat, and carries a smooth black cane and a revolver.

Place of Birth: The Ukrainian town of Koroshny.
Relatives: Moishe Berkowitz (father, deceased), Malke Berkowitz (mother, deceased), ten siblings (some deceased, some not, but Isaac has no contact with them either way), Hannah Berkowitz née Sokol (wife, deceased).
Previous professions: Soldier in the Russian army for eleven years, tailor for thirteen years.

First impressions: First observers see him as cold and aloof, possibly too consumed with his own thoughts to talk to anyone else. They might possibly see that Isaac has gone through some trauma. What first observers don't see is a meek old man. They observe that Isaac still has much strength left in him, even at middle age.
Personality: Isaac is a broken man, trying to fix himself. He uses wit and humor to get over the bad things that have happened to him. While friendly to people he trusts, Isaac is quite reserved around others. He is quite an intellectual, and enjoys games of chess. Isaac has no small measure of determination, and will do anything to protect those he latches onto.
Opinion of other characters: "I do not like Calavera. The man seems to have bad intentions."

"Swift Thunder is a bitter man. He has been hurt by fate. He reminds me of me in some ways."

"Marjam is a useful woman! I think she will be a good asset to this mission."

"I will work with all of these men and women. I have to, if I am to be accepted by this new wonderful country."
Opinion of the mission: "I think it's personally distasteful, but I still want to serve my new country, and this is the best way to do so."
Employment history:
  • 1848-1854 Student
  • 1854-1874 Soldier in the Russian army
  • 1875-1888 Tailor
  • 1888-now Soldier in the American army. Isaac "got volunteered" after some Army recruitment officers heard about his powers. Isaac stayed there because he latched on to America as his new country and he wants to serve America and prove he can be a good citizen.

Power/drawbacks: Isaac can summon swarms of locusts and other arthropods to attack his enemies. He can only use it on one person at a time, and it tires him out very quickly. Isaac abhors his power, seeing it as terrible and borderline blasphemous.

Bio:Isaac Berkowitz was born in the Ukrainian town of Koroshny in 1845. His parents were a poor farmer and housewife, who had ten children besides Isaac. They were pious Jews, but Isaac wasn't pious, preferring mischief instead.

The boy was conscripted into the Tsar's army at the age of nine. Isaac was educated in a cantonist school, where he was pressured to convert to Orthodox Christianity. But every time they tried to convert Isaac, he was somewhere else playing. At the age of 18, when Isaac officially started his military service, he seemed to be broken, but he was just holding back.

Near the end of his twelve allotted army years, at the age of 29, Isaac deserted after one too many abuses. Isaac discovered his powers while while fleeing from soldiers chasing him. He was frightened by them, and just wished to return to a normal life without any trouble. After Isaac deserted the army, he returned back to Koroshy, but both his parents were dead and his siblings were scattered in other villages, dead, or had unrecognizably changed.

Isaac Berkowitz settled down in Koroshny, became a tailor, married a girl named Hannah, denied any rumors that the deserter who summoned a swarm of bugs on some Russian soldiers was himself, and reconnected himself with his faith. Alas, Isaac and Hannah could not have any children, and they could not have a normal life. After about five years of normal living, an angry mob attacked Koroshny and burned down businesses. Isaac killed them with his powers, but not before they killed his wife.

Isaac decided he'd had enough of Russia, and so immigrated to America, land of the free. He set up a thriving tailor shop in New York City. Isaac loved America. Perhaps too much. When army recruitment came to Isaac's house, hearing rumors about a Jewish tailor who used his powers on a group of men trying to kill him, Isaac Berkowitz joined gleefully. He didn't consider the parallels between this and his own experience as a nine-year-old. Now he's on this mission.

Application
Name: Rooster Z. Morgan
Age: 33
Appearance:Image

Place of Birth: St. Louis, MO
Relatives: An estranged brother, lives in central Missouri and became a rancher. Rooster and his brother haven't seen each other in years and Rooster hopes that time span goes longer.
Previous professions: Riverboat gambler; con artist

First impressions: Rooster comes off as kind of a showboat. He's quick to a smile, and for some it carries a sense of charm - but, there will be some who won't feel like he truly is genuine.
Personality: Rooster is a charmer. He's flashy, showy, underhanded but in a way that makes people want to trust him - at least, most people will trust and some specifically won't. Hardened lawmen, for example.
Opinion of other characters:
Calavera - That guy creeps Rooster out, enough that he won't try to make him one of his marks. Plus, he doesn't look like he'd have money anyway.
Swift Thunder - A strong, silent, obedient type is always a plus for Rooster. Rooster might want to befriend him and use him as one of his honchos who do behind-the-scenes-work to pull off cons.
Thor Dahlstrom - Hard to make this guy out right now.
Ebenezer Walsh - Another guy who's hard to make out right now.
Maryam - Any woman who shows that much leg is askin' to be stared at. Even though Rooster can't help but being attracted, he thinks she's probably going to be too much trouble.
Isaac Berkowitz - Rooster is hard pressed between seeing him as a potential ally or seeing him as a potential mark.
"Cactus Jack" - After picking up his jaw off the floor in shock upon seeing him the first time, Rooster thinks, "What in the hell is that?" After getting to know him, he'd probably describe Jack like this: "He's got, shall we say, a prickly personality."
Wesly Johnson - Rooster can spot a pro within moments. He has a natural affinity towards Wesly seeing how he understands the nature of a gamblin' man.
Any others, Rooster isn't keen on learning all about anyone's life stories, since he'd prefer to leave when possible, but he'll try to charm his way into the good graces of his colleagues, and get out of duties at camp he'd rather not do. That means he'll be friendly, perceptive, and as charming as ever.

Opinion of the mission: Better than a hanging, but not nearly as rewarding as winning a full pot in a high stakes game. Rooster is also seeing how he might ditch this operation and get back to what he loves doing - which is why the War Department is keeping a close eye on him.
Employment history: He was caught in the act of using his water abilities after a few rounds of losing big and he blew his top. The agent who caught him gave him a deal, and Rooster took the less of two evils.

Power/drawbacks: "Cards always works up a good thirst" - Rooster has the ability to create water out of seemingly thin air. Rooster is capable of creating up to 50 gallons of unpressurized water at a time. He can create the water away from his body, up to 50 yds, as if it just appeared (that is, it does not stream out of his hands or something). He is even able to replace about a foot deep and five feet wide of dirt or other earth up to 50 yds. away, with the same amount of water. As a side effort, Rooster is also able to remove the same amount of water as he can create. A big drawback is that the water is never pressurized, and so can't be used to blast at anyone or to damage something.

"A hot bath will do nicely" - Rooster has always felt better after a nice, hot bath - or being in any kind of water. Unknown to him, water acts a healing agent on him for both physical and mental afflictions. A nice hot bath will cure minor wounds and bring accelerated healing for major wounds (e.g., the longer he spends soaking in the tub or dipping in the river, major wounds will heal at 4 times faster than normal.) He can't heal anyone else.

Skills: Rooster has a natural and effortless charisma. This attitude won't force anyone to do anything, but it will make them more susceptible to treating Rooster well, to considering his ideas, and to going easy on him if he gets in trouble. Some people - especially hardened lawmen - are impervious to Rooster's charisma.

Rooster also has practiced the art of the fast-draw. This is good, because while he prefers to use his charm, drawing his six-shooters fast can also protect himself in trouble. Rooster's fast-draw often serves as a deterrent to others so that Rooster does not actually have to fire his guns. Which is good, since Rooster isn't the best shot.

Equipment: Gun-belts, fully loaded with a half box of spares; boots with a hidden pocket in them (often containing a spare ace of spades and a wad of emergency money); About $1000, most of it legal; a few markers from other players who owe him; a knife (he uses it to shave); whetstone; a map of rail lines across the country; canteen (kept on the horse); a box of cigars; matches; aftershave; cologne.

Bio: Rooster Z. Morgan was the son of a professional con artist and his wife who died in childbirth to her second son. As far as family life went, Rooster heard of "sure things" and "easy marks" all his life. He was like his father and was eager to learn his trade. His brother, however, was more like his mother and eventually moved out with an uncle and aunt at age 10. With that in mind, Rooster went with his father on gambling trips up and down the Mississippi, watching poker players, learning how to spot tells, deal from the bottom of the deck, hide cards, count cards, fast draw - and unbeknownst to him, developing a remarkable set of abilities he had had dealing with creating water. Long story short, when Rooster was 16, his father was arrested for cheating. So from then on, Rooster went off on his own into the world, gaining good amounts of money here and there to keep him going, sometimes winning a fortune and other times losing as much. He also spent time creating and messing with water on his gambling trips. (Once, just to see what he could do, he experimented with seeing how much water of the Mississippi he could remove under the riverboat he was on. It was enough to cause a noticeable bump in the ride as the sudden vaccuum was filled). It seemed like everything was going up.

Rooster's luck began to change, however, when Missouri and surrounding states began to ban riverboat gambling. The glamourous venue he had known was drying up, and so gambling went underground. A friend informed him of a place he could lay down some money at, in downtown St. Louis, so he became a regular there for a year or so. One night, during a game Rooster lost a large sum and lost his temper. He caused the center of the table to become wet with about a couple of hand lengths of water, so the ultimate winner raking it in got annoyed at the wet bills and cards. Rooster sassed off to the winner, guns were drawn, and it was only the voice of authority that kept the place from going to a shootout. A War Department agent had been there tracking Rooster for several months on suspicions. He saw the whole thing and put two and two together. The agent nabbed his man in the melee that followed, with the gamblers grabbing what they could and fleeing in any which direction. The agent gave Rooster a deal - either the agent reveals his secret of water manipulation to the man who almost shot him and throughout the whole area, or Rooster joins the War Department and works for them. Since either way was going to be a change of scenery, Rooster grudgingly went to work for the government. He may not be the most loyal of agents, being a con artist at heart, but that's where he is right now.

Awake in Prefeton - A superhero story about school students discovering they have powers. Was more on character then on fights, but now there is the fight for the future and for freedom. Now in the final chapter.

Might need some work, but here it is.

Application
Name: Danny "Cactus Jack" McLaughlin
Age: Was killed at 27. Realistically 37.
Appearance: It's hard to tell if some of Danny's body structure became altered after his death and rebirth as Cactus Jack. Cactus Jack stands at 6'3 in a slim build, where a vast assortment of sharp objects, mostly rusted metal pins and needles are scattered across his body. While most of the needles have been ripped from his face, the rest of his body are prickly, giving him a botched spiked skin.

Excluding the obvious needles, Cactus Jack's skin is a ghostly pale white. His eyes are unnaturally demonic in appearance, having red irises with a set of vertical scars below his eyes. He possesses teeth akin to a shark, yellow in appearance, along with hideous claw-like fingers that he keeps concealed with some leather gloves. He still has a full set of black hair under his hair, though it was originally brown during his robbing days.

He wears a black shirt that has been ripped open in the middle to reveal the gaping scar on his distorted chest, along with a white buttoned up vest covered with dried blood. On top of this, he wears a leather dark green jacket with black cuffs, along with a matching set of leather pants and brown cowboy boots. As an attempt to conceal some of his monstrous-looking features, he wears a large brown sun hat with a wide brim, along with a red bandana wrapped around his neck to put over his mouth.

Place of Birth: Tucson, Arizona.
Relatives: Jack assumes his parents are both dead, after being unable to track them down. His former fiancé Dahila Abernathy is still alive, however believes that Danny is dead, where she is currently in a family with another man.
Previous professions: Farmboy, Repairman, Gang Member, Robber, Outlaw.

First impressions: At first, one might think that Cactus Jack looks silly, due to the choice of jacket. Some might even think that it's due to wearing a jacket made out of cactus skin. Go more up close, then they suddenly realize that Cactus Jack is just as the ghost stories would say. It's best not to look at him funny, otherwise he might think about borrowing a strip of your skin.
Personality: Originally a flashy and prideful gang member and robber, he's now a sadistic and bloodthirsty monster, enjoying the fear out of his victims and enemies. He does show annoyance at being forced to work for the War Department, even when he is told it will help the country, but it's the least of his concerns. He does have moments of longing for the old days and his old flame, before his unfortunate rebirth, showing some envy towards those who are presented more human than him. He does make sure to others that he is not someone to be messed with, showing some twisted pride to intimidate them. As a funny fact, he possesses a sweet tooth and will ration any candy he finds.
Opinion of other characters:
Calavera: "The King of Ghosts, huh? We might get along, if the deserts share our horror stories."
Dahlstorm: "He ain't Thomas Edison now. Probably would want to learn more about.."
Swift Thunder: "The Indians and their special magic.. He be a banshee to burst my eardrums!"
Maryam: "This woman came all the way from the East of the frontier. She better not let me down."
Isaac: "A broken man. Forced into a symbol of death and decay. If I start coughing up maggots, I'll rip his jaw off."
Rooster: "Don't get cocky, waterboy! At least, he better share me some snake oil.."
Opinion of the mission: "Hm. You can't expect to lure over some one, like you giving them candy. Maybe I can take advantage of the bounties that want to put up a fight. I'm sure my new employers wouldn't mind if I bring to them some severed heads. Alive and dead is common out here in the West."
Employment history:
The War Department had gotten word of the legend of Cactus Jack and the killings in the desert, to which they found a link. It took a while and some heavy firepower, however Cactus Jack's employment is more forced than others. Jack was given an option and a simple ultimatum: Join the war department or face life imprisonment without any flesh or blood to sustain himself. It was hard to say no, but he didn't really have a choice, since the blood and guts of the living was one of the only things that could satisfy him.

So he said yes.

Power/drawbacks:
Regeneration: Is it a blessing? Is it a curse? Cactus Jack is unable to die, as his body regenerates slowly. Even if he is killed by various means, his body would repair itself until he is given motor control. The process is slow, which takes as long as a day or more, depending on the severity of the injuries. Since it would take too long for himself to heal, he has to use a sewing kit to stitch and patch himself up, before he can heal. This can be annoying, if he gets shot up heavily during a showdown, as he would have to repair himself afterwards for another wave.
Endurance: Cactus Jack is more enduring when it comes to pain. While he might still feel pain when it's pushed to the extreme, he can easily shrug off a bullet or two, since all that it will do would just piss him off.
Natural Armor: After his rebirth, his regeneration caused most of the needles and other unnatural sharp objects to be fused with his bone matter, making it hard and unlikely to remove. However, it does give Jack some benefits, even if it's an annoyance. His spiky skin serves as some natural armor, which can be weaponized in the event that someone tries to ambush him up close. A bear hug from Jack would end up killing them.
Need for Flesh and Blood: Cactus Jack's body has the habit of decay and deteriorating, where he needs human flesh and blood once a week. Cactus Jack is forced to do this, since he would be in a hellish state of agony, as he is forced to feel his own body decaying. As a result, he would need to kill people to obtain flesh and blood to sustain himself. The problem is that he is currently on a tight leash, so he is starved of the resources that he needs to help himself.
Equipment: Colt M1878 revolver, a box of bullets, leather satchel, a large hunting knife (Jack comedically keeps it jabbed on his shoulder bone), tobacco, a sewing kit, cigars, rope for a lasso, and a canteen.

Bio:
Originally an urban legend, Cactus Jack was deemed something inhuman by the progressing times, as the frontier was coming to a close. Born in Mesa, Arizona with an Irish mother, Danny McLaughlin was a young man who made a name for himself in 1880 as a hotshot. He was observed to have a tolerance for pain, especially after it was reported that he broke several bones during a dispute, only for his bones to heal in a faster rate than usual. Falling on the wrong side of the law, Danny started his reputation by being a part of a robber gang, known as the Sidewinders. Even with a gun in his hand, Danny only wanted the money, not the blood. The Sidewinders would target saloons, post offices, and small banks in developing towns for whatever they could gain, but things were still low for the gang. It wasn't until Danny would climb the ranks, after he developed a hobby for being a poker player, raking in some money without a hassle. Danny ended up thinking he had a streak of luck on his side, but things wouldn't last forever.

Ironically, they do now for Danny..

During a hot day in the Arizona desert, the Sidewinders had gotten word that a train containing gold was travelling on the railroad. Danny wanted the Sidewinders to make a name for themselves, convincing them to strike for a train robbery. The gang was able to derail the train by sending a boulder or two onto the tracks, knocking the train over, sending train cars scattered about. Some ablaze and some torn into metal husks of themselves. The rumor of gold was true, as they found a wagon filled with nuggets that were recently mined. Unfortunately, the Sidewinders didn't realize it at first, but after their successful robbery and evasion from the law enforcement who came to the scene, Danny and the others found themselves with a target on their backs, due to a heavy bounty.

The bounty was made by a wealthy and ruthless railroad baron, who was displeasured that the gold he was meant to receive would end up in the hands of bandits, despite the hypocrisy of his involvement with another criminal gang in the frontier, known as the Ace-In-Tails gang. Danny would be arrested in his hometown, after trying to reconcile with an old flame. Danny and the rest of the Sidewinders were incarcerated in a penitentiary in the middle of the desert, forced to do hard labor, until several visitors appeared to Danny with something on their minds. Danny didn't understand what the gentlemen in front of their cell wanted, until he noticed the guard accepting the bribe. To which, Danny was forced at gunpoint to be escorted outside of the penitentiary..

It turns out that the warden was bribed to have the Sidewinders be executed, where the Ace-In-Tails gang had made some plans on how to deliver "vengeance" on the behalf of the railroad baron. While the Sidewinders were killed in traditional ways, such as by firing squad or hanging, Danny's punishment was complicated, due to a minor inconvenience. Strangely, when he was to be lynched with a noose, he ended up hanging from the tree, struggling for freedom from his restraints. It was unknown, if it was due to Danny's pain tolerance or if the noose was not put on him properly. Someone from the gang had a dark thought. A dark thought which the gang can join on to help with Danny's execution.

It had to do with a set of metal pins and needles. Along with whatever sharp object they could get their hands on. Stabbing and impaling Danny, until he was starting to scream, Danny would end up getting the name Cactus Jack, due to the state of his body. A body looking more like a grotesque porcupine than the intended cactus. Even when the gang decided to let him live, they watched as he stumbled and limped towards a nearby town, bleeding from every orifice and in complete agony. The townspeople were no help. They assumed that Danny was now part of the dead, due to his refusal to die. The townspeople panicked, where some armed townsmen shot Danny up, until he fall over dead.

Before he was buried, the Ace-In-Tails gang ripped open his chest to take his heart, feeding it to the coyotes, before his body was dumped into a shallow grave near a cactus patch. It wouldn't be until several years passed, when Danny would end up waking up. His body was deep underground, but a grisly metamorphosis has occurred, due to his disfigurement. He rose from the grounds in a state of mania and rage. He was still alive, but something happened to him, as a side effect of his powers. He was not prepared for death, but it looked like he was far from dying now. A surge of vengeance erupted from him. He was no longer Danny McLaughlin. Now, he was Cactus Jack.

It wouldn't be later, as a strings of murders and dead animal carcasses would appear on the Arizona desert. Many blame bandits. Others think it would be the result of a wild animals. However, many would end up believing the story of Cactus Jack, when he ended up finding the Ace-In-Tails gang, hiding out upstairs in a saloon in a declining town. Witnesses recalled the screams of the gang members, which died down after a while. When the lawmen went upstairs to the scene, they found the gang members dead. Brutally killed and disemboweled. Cactus Jack still roamed the desert for years, until the War Department got to him.

Application
Name: Wesly Johnson
Age: 35
Appearance: Tall, lean figure. Sports a wide-brimmed white hat, sun-kissed skin, and a mile-wide smile. Eyes are a shocking blue framed by straggly blond hair running down to shoulders.

Place of Birth: Virginia City, NV
Relatives: Mother, Father, two brothers and a niece.
Previous professions: Professional gambler.

First impressions: Wesly comes off as an incredibly laid-back, joke-prone figure when talked to normally, but those meeting him during a tense situation may see someone a little emotionally numb and too obsessed with winning.
Personality: Wesly is a bit hard to get a read on. He tends to alternate between laid-back and happy-go-lucky and dead serious with an unbreakable poker face, depending on the tensity of a situation.
Opinion of other characters:
(All characters bc it refused to save the draft and I lack the patience to do each one individually again): 'Well, this is one colorful bunch o' people. Most definitely some folks here I'd rather stay away from, but Rooster and Swift seem to be fine people for a round of games."
Opinion of the mission: "What can I say, it's a way to make up for lost years gamblin my life away, and a way for me to learn to master this weird power."
Employment history: Discovered his powers over a lengthy period of time(past eight years or so of his life), got tangled up in the War Department business after unknowingly confessing his sins to an agent disguised as a priest.

Power/drawbacks:
To put it simply, Wesly can manipulate the rotational energy of objects. He can either speed one up, or slow one down. He can use this to apply additional force to thrown weapons, send up clouds of whirling dust, or even send people flying with the spin.
For drawbacks, Wesly can't create rotational energy-he's either got to absorb it or use his own energy for it. When giving up energy to spin someting up, he can become slow and fatigued, and when taking energy, he becomes fidgety and hyperactive at best and physically unable to stop moving at worst.

Equipment: A Winchester 1783 Rifle+Associated ammo, a flask of whiskey, a canteen of water, two boomerangs, leather gloves and common clothes. Although he doesn't own a horse, he uses a bicycle so he can use his power to put on extra speed.

Bio:
Wesley was born in 1858 to loving parents and rough, albeit enjoyable, older brothers. He spent most of his life being raised by his mother and brothers, while the father worked in the mines of the Comstack Lode. It was from his older brothers that Wesly learned to gamble, and after the mines dried up in 1878, he left home to seek a life of thrills and fortune.

He became well known as a professional gambler, excelling in games of dice and roulette. Over the past eight years of his life, though, he became more and more aware something was...off, about him. He would always find himself either tired or fidgety after every roll, and needing to take breaks more frequently the longer his preferred games dragged on, and it wasn't just exhaustion. The truth of his powers came to a head when he accidentally forced a carriage to a screeching halt to avoid being struck, quickly fleeing the scene in an involuntary whirlwind so no one could catch him. He confessed his powers to a priest, not knowing it was a War Department agent, and ended up being taken in to rein in his erratic powers and serve the nation.

Explain the nature of the supe gene (assuming powers are indeed genetic). Does the same power pass from generation to generation, with only certain individuals being able to access their abilities by luck of the draw? Or are the powers random, despite the supe gene itself being inherited from biological parents?

Name: Rooster Z. Morgan
Age: 33
Appearance:(Image)

Thor Dahlstrom - WIP
Ebenezer Walsh - WIP
Maryam - Any woman who shows that much leg is askin' to be stared at. Even though Rooster can't help but being attracted, he thinks she's probably going to be too much trouble.
Isaac Berkowitz - Rooster is hard pressed between seeing him as a potential ally or seeing him as a potential mark.
"Cactus Jack" - After picking up his jaw off the floor in shock upon seeing him the first time, Rooster thinks, "What in the hell is that?" After getting to know him, he'd probably describe Jack like this: "He's got, shall we say, a prickly personality."

"You can trust me, ma'am" - Also unknown to Rooster, and partially a reason why he has made off so well in the field of conning marks, is an enhanced charisma. This ability won't force anyone to do anything, but it will make them more susceptible to treating Rooster well, to considering his ideas, and to going easy on him if he gets in trouble. Some people - especially hardened lawmen - are impervious to Rooster's charisma.

"Was that fast? I call that fast." - Rooster, though preferring to use his charm, can also protect himself in trouble. Rooster has an innate ability to fast-draw his guns, which often serves as a deterrent to others so that Rooster does not actually have to fire them. Which is good, since Rooster isn't the best shot.

Equipment: Gun-belts, fully loaded with a half box of spares; boots with a hidden pocket in them (often containing a spare ace of spades and a wad of emergency money); About $1000, most of it legal; a few markers from other players who owe him; a knife (he uses it to shave); whetstone; a map of rail lines across the country; canteen (kept on the horse); a box of cigars; matches;

Looks good, after you put in the relation descriptions you will be accepted. There is one thing I want to discuss, however:

The enhanced charisma. I would love for him to have just general better charisma, like as a skill, but as a power, it just doesn't jive well with the water powers, and in this setting people generally only have one power. So, just change it from a power to a skill, and we are golden.

A very interesting power, but very useful in its own way. Accepted!

So, the powers aren't quite genetic. It has to do more with certain conditions. Populations that face discrimination and hardship are most likely to have their children develop these powers, but it's not a sure-fire way. Basically, a combination between nurture and a recessive trait. People with powers who have a child are as likely to have a super-powered child as any other couple. So any child can have super-powers, but it is more likely among certain populations. The powers, similarly, are random. However, there is some correlation between personality and power. This link is not proven to be causal either way, though, and is also culturally significant. For example, Arab children with super-powers and happy dispositions can exhibit cold powers because in Arabic, happiness and cold are related concepts. However, imagine that all research done on the subject has incredibly small sample sizes and suffers from 19th-century-science issues.

So, in short, it's not really genetic in any way you could tell from phenotype. It appears to be random and related to societal hardships.

Makes sense. I intend my character's powers to be intrinsically linked with Norwegian romantic nationalism. He will also be severely handicapped by consumption, with certain benefits of his powers ironically prolonging his suffering.

I added everyone accepted to the roster, so that should clear things up.
The name's James. James Usari. Well, my name is not actually James Usari, so don't bother actually looking it up, but it'll do for now.

Hey OP - So for Rooster, I have no problem making charisma and fast-draw to be skills and not powers. What about water as a healing agent for him? I did that because Rooster doesn't have much offense to offer with his ability, and that healing agent might come in handy to him.
Current RPs -
Icarus - A sci-fi story about people from all different timelines and backgrounds, rescued right after they had died, and now on missions to find out what happened, why, and to stop renegade time travelers from destroying the past.

Awake in Prefeton - A superhero story about school students discovering they have powers. Was more on character then on fights, but now there is the fight for the future and for freedom. Now in the final chapter.

Oh yeah, water as a healing agent is very good, it actually works well with his water powers if water can act as a healing agent. I found that a nice tidbit, actually.

Done and done.

(Oh, and if I can get any other water-related powers, just let me know and I'll get some. :D)

(WIP) Not final, needs some work and possibly balancing. I'm not American so I'll be looking up everything lol.

Application
Name: Thomas R Pent (AKA: Serpent)
Age: 32
Appearance: Jack stands at 5'10" (178cm) tall, weighs 145lbs (66kg), and has a skinny body covered in barely visibly scales, tired snake-like eyes, a forked tongue, and long nails.

Place of Birth: Melbourne, Australia
Relatives: Deceased parents and one lost cousin
Previous professions: Snake Removal (10-16); Physician (17-22); Bounty Hunter (25-32).

First impressions: A creepy, shadowy figure who'd probably offer to sell you drugs or kidnap you.
Personality: Thomas is an eccentric, brooding man who frequently risks his life trying to go above and beyond. He believes himself a cut above the rest, aiming to be perfect in everything he does. He values trust, consistency, and ruthless efficiency above all but will immediately turn tail if the task at hand goes against his strict moral code. His tolerance for gross things is rather high and, due to growing up abroad and mostly alone, most small talk goes over his head.
Opinion of other characters: They are potential allies, but coworkers for now seeing as they're annoyingly unpredictable and strange.
  • Calavera
  • Swift Thunder
  • Isaac Berkowitz
  • Rooster Z. Morgan
  • Danny "Cactus Jack" McLaughlin
  • Wesly Johnson

Opinion of the mission: Intrigued at the prospect of meeting other Extraordinaires, if unsure how they'll convince others to join them. Doesn't want to kill innocents, but is confident he'll be fine at least.
Employment history: While searching for a way to remove his curse, hunting down various outlaws on the side, he learned the US War Department was recruiting Extraordinaires. In the hopes that someone could cure him, or at least help find the one responsible, he signed up.

Power/drawbacks:
  • Snaaaaake! - Thomas can transform any part of his body into that of a serpent, multiple serpents, or a single 20m long serpent for 10 minutes. In this form, he has most of the abilities of the Serpentes family:
    • Can switch or blend hemotoxic, neurotoxic, and cryotoxic venom which can be spat from over 131ft (40m) away (info);
    • Heat vision, keen smell, and capable of holding his breath for 10 minutes underwater;
    • Can move at 12mph (20kmh) with 30s bursts over 20mph (32kmh), plus a strike speed of 134mph (216kmh);
    • Unsurprisingly unable to use most human items, clothes, weapons, doors, buildings, etc;
    • Damage is proportionate between forms, shrinking or growing wounds while transforming.
Equipment: Loose fitting grey robes, venom/antivenom kit, several of his discarded snake fangs, sleeping bag

Bio: Thomas remembers his parents as loving and intelligent, only for them to suddenly go missing, later being discovered outta town bitten to death by multiple snakes. Being the young, stupid kid that he was, he began a snake removal business at the age of 10 out of spite. He was borderline suicidal. Those who didn't immediately turn him away, became amazed at his brazen handling skills. Impressing a local physician, Thomas was hired on and taught the ways of medicine, selling his services across the country, eventually discovering a chain of strange snake related deaths that seemed all too familiar. For several months Thomas began investigating these deaths, trying to catch one before it happened.

This is where he met a Witch for the first time, and the murderer of his parents. Catching them in the act, it became clear they could control serpents, using them to kill and steal from passersby. Years of built-up rage burst forth and, after tackling the Witch, things quickly went awry as Thomas was easily overpowered. Several quick bites knocked him out cold. By the time Thomas awoke, he was all alone, somehow alive despite everything. In the days to come, he found himself gradually changing, skin flaking off to reveal scales and sudden bouts of blindness. Even worse still, he was fired and reported to the police once his affliction became obvious. Fleeing overseas to the US his powers fully manifested and, as he begun to master them, he became a bounty hunter to feed himself.

Here's my app, still a WIP

Application
Name: Chris Davis
Age: 33
Appearance:
Image

Place of Birth: Galveston, Texas
Relatives: Marjorie Davis(mother), Richard Davis(father, deceased), Diane Davis(older sister), Fredrick Davis(younger brother), Stephanie Davis(niece)
Previous professions:
  • 1857-1865: slave(technically; his father, who was also his owner, considered him too young to work)
  • 1865-1873: N/A
  • 1873-1877: railroad worker(he helped to rebuild the South's railroads after the Civil War)
  • 1878-1881: cattle rancher
  • 1882-1889: bounty hunter

First impressions: Handsome, tough, not too trusting, generally looks like he's been through some stuff
Personality:
  • Bachelor: While handsome, he is not very interested in relationships ("Sorry, ladies, you picked the wrong guy to fall in love with.")
  • Tough, but Lovable: He is tough, not showing much emotion early on, but once you get to know him and start to earn his trust, he'll start opening up a bit more ("Well, we've known each other for a while know. You seem like a decent guy. I can trust you, right?")
  • Secretive: He doesn't really like talking about his past ("Why should I tell you, huh?")
  • A bit Cocky: He can be full of himself at times ("Sometimes, I truly amaze myself. Man, the stories I could tell. I am, quite frankly, the best one the War Department ended up going with.")
    Opinion of other characters:
  • Calavera: "I don't know, he doesn't look like much. Not sure how much he can contribute, but I guess I'll figure that out soon enough."
  • Swift Thunder: "I, for one, admire his stoicism. I wish I had a poker face that good."
  • Thor Dahlstrom: WIP
  • Ebenezer Walsh: WIP
  • Isaac Berkowitz: "Those Russians... Seems like an interesting enough guy. I can tell he's been through some stuff, which we have in common. Just might get along with him."
  • Rooster Z. Morgan: "This guy's a bit too shady for my liking. He looks like a literal snake oil salesman! Although, his powers might come in handy out here in the desert."
  • Cactus Jack: "Whatever you do, don't kill me."
  • Wesly Johnson: "It can be hard to tell what this guy is thinking. I'll figure it out one of these days..."
  • Naomi Zhang Yiqi: WIP
  • Thomas R. Pent: WIP
Opinion of the mission: "Ah, y'know, another job. Not too fond of it being in the middle of a desert. I sure hope I'm gonna get paid good for this..."
Employment history: (Why did you get involved with the War Department?)

Power/drawbacks:
  • Enhanced Strength: Chris has enhanced strength, which allows him to lift around 3.5 times his weight. He can also use his strength to amplify his strikes(punches, kicks, etc.). (“Yeah, I can lift. How much? If I tell you, you wouldn’t believe me.”)
  • Enhanced Durability: Chris also has enhanced durability, which allows him to take a lot more damage than an average person. (“Pffft, that didn’t hurt. Hell, it almost tickled.”)
  • Enhanced Leap: Chris also has enhanced leaping abilities, which allow him to jump higher and farther than the average person. (“It’s not about how high you can go, but how high you want to go. Oh, who am I kidding, of course it’s about how high you can go.”)
  • Enhanced Regeneration: Chris also has enhanced regeneration abilities, which allows for any wounds or injuries he sustains to heal quicker than normal.
(“Ow! Okay, that actually hurt. Wait, hang on...yeah, that’s better. What was I talking about again?”)
Drawbacks: He has gotten better with this as he got older and gained more control over his powers, but he sometimes loses control of his strength, causing unintended damage or more damage than intended (i.e, he tries to open a door and accidentally rips the whole thing off it’s frame); also, using his powers requires a lot of energy, so after a while of fighting, his energy would be spent.
Equipment: Bowie Knife, Colt .45 pistol, Burgess Lever Action Rifle
