Rome, Repubblica Romana.

The Council of Consuls finished deliberation and drafted two letters, one to the Parthenopean Republic, and the second to the Cisalpine Republic. they stressed the importance of forming a united Italian state, pointing out how only together, could the Italian people weather the storms brewing in Europe at large. This was specifically targeted towards the Parthenopean republic, really only kept alive by the French army at this point. The Cisalpine Republic was a well-functioning republic, but would surely listen to reason, no? The consuls shook hands and left.

This left Fontanelli with his staff, working out the new wave of conscription, with each department being forced to raise a Line regiment and cavalry squadron. More cannon were ordered from the regular suppliers, and widespread training drills began for the already active regiments. The Republican Guard, already on high alert due to the worries of an attempt at re-establishing the Papal states, were ordered to shore up Rome's defenses, and mount guns on the Aurelian walls. Fontanelli called up General Lechi, putting him in charge of his own division, stationed in Florence. General Balabio was called up, being put in charge of a Division of Cavalry, and sent north to the Cisalpine republic, not a threatening gesture, of course. General Zucchi, got his own division stationed to the North as well. Any remaining soldiers were concentrated around Rome to be dispersed if the need raised.

Consul Angelucci drafted a letter to the remaining Consuls in Paris.

To: The Consulate of France
From: Consul Angelucci of Rome

My dear French friends, and comrades. The French revolution, while doing many things, has had a side effect on the Italian peoples. Seeking the spark of nationalism within France, there is now growing calls among the populace for a singular Italian state. Now, as the situation is within both our favor in Italy, with both the Cisalpine and Parthenopean republics being established and holding, I believe it is within both our best interests to unify the states. Not only would this make the administration of the regions easier, it would provide a massive supply of manpower to assist your armies in Europe, or wherever you may need them.

Sincirely,
Consul Angelucci.

Portsmouth, Great Britain, January 27th

Image

A veritable fleet left the port before noon before the tolling of bells alerting one of the lunch hour. Under a thick fog but comparatively calm seas for this time of years, the ships left. Eight third-rate ships of the line, six ships of the line captured from France, two razeed frigates, ten fifth-rate frigates, ten sixth-rate frigates, and dozens of requisitioned vessels for transporting troops left from the port. Cutting through the grey water menacingly, the ships went south, towards Gibraltar, towards Egypt. In a few months' time, the ships would be in Egypt, and hopefully, Malta would be in British hands.

"Pitt, Pitt!" Sang the king."Nelson is off to Egypt!"

"Yes, your majesty." Noded the Prime Minister.

"Pitt, I want you to put your plan for union before parliament, I want to ensure the French cannot weaken us internally. I also want decisive action against the French." Said the king.

"Sir?"

"You heard me!" Roared the king.

"Yes, sir." Noded Pitt.

"I want the French strangled from income sources, and the same goes for their allies. Size their colonies! Choke their economy's! If I must do it myself, I will do so Mr. Pitt. The French still have a colonial empire to draw from, and that might keep them alive. Unless you would like to be leading an army head-first into the bastion of revolution, I suggest you heed my orders." Warned the king of Pitt stared confusedly.

"Sir, you also have a letter from the Austrians, they want to bring the Tartars into this mess," Pitt said as he changed the subject.

"And you know what I will say about them. I'd rather accept catholisim over having to side with them." George III said in an oddly subdued tone of voice.

"Yet, they do possess a large military; excellent cannon fodder. They may be believers in the prophet, but certainly, that doesn't mean that their worth as cannon fodder is diminished."

"Wise words, Mr. Pitt. But we cannot let the Tartars hear them, not that they likely speak much kinder of us either." Stated the king.

"Your majesty, what should the next front be?" Asked Pitt.

"Wherever and anywhere, we strike decisively."

"Sir?"

"You heard me, maximum pressure on the French, ensure that they fall. Consign their victories to the tombes of history and their defeat to living memory." Demanded the king.

"Yes, sir." Pitt said.

Francis I, King of the Romans, Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary, etc,

As you may well know, I have little love for the Tartars and wish to not associate them unless absolutely necessary, that is my position, always has been, and always will be. But I must acquiesce that the Tartar's can have a certain utility in war, I will be fine with their participation in the war, as long as their zones of influence are kept to a minimum, and their role is limited. We cannot give them too much power.

1799, Shahjahanabad, Delhi, the Capital City of Mughal Empire

For centuries, Mughal Empire have maintained strong position in India, which enabled them access to European markets, and European companies trading with them. With it, comes the French military armaments and designs which proved useful to Mughal as they modernized their military for centuries, hand-in-hand with Mughal's own ingenuity with arms and science. In spite of this, however, Maratha still stays alive and not much hindered with Mughal's modernization. Maratha has also been known to supporting the hardliner Islamists inside Mughals who advocated for the restoration of Islam as state religion. Perhaps they should be solved first. Other issues, arise, though.

A once-beneficial relationship with France crumbled when the monarchy fell and was replaced with the Directorate, and later on, Napoleon. Though relationship was restored when Directorate took control, Napoleon's ascension and his subsequent campaigns in Europe and Egypt complicates the matters. Mughal is worried that their close relations with France could be interpreted as a sign of alliance with them, and it could force the European powers such as British to support Maratha, or worse, take India for themselves. Dutch could be seen as a good alternative, but for now, Mughal may have to watch from the sideline.

In the meantime, Mughal is in the massive reformation movement to finalized the progression to Western-styled administration, modeled after the French administration system to solve the bureaucracy.

The North Sea, near Lowestoft, Great Britain, 1799

Major General Count Curt von Stedingk
The cold winter winds of this time of year made sailing the North Sea a little more than difficult. A Scandinavian frigate carried Count Curt von Stedingk and some of his close aides and advisors to Great Britain. There they were to with British officials to discuss a possible alliance between Scandinavia and Great Britain to fight Napoleon. The man had a complicated history with the British though, he had fought the British during the American Revolutionary War. He began his military career in France and rose quickly through the ranks in the Royal Suédois regiment in France, which was commanded by his friend Count Axel von Fersen. He and von Fersen soon became friends with Louis XVI and Marie Antionette often spending time in Versailles. They both had become very loyal to the French Monarchy and when France soldiers to fight the British in the thirteen colonies he went along with them.

He would pledge his loyalties to Scandinavia though; the place where he was born during the war with the Tatars in which he commanded soldiers in the defence of Savolax. His forces repeatedly defeated Russian forces that greatly outnumbered the Scandinavians, and von Stedingk was promoted to major general. He would be appointed Ambassador to Tatarstan soon after the war. During his time in Tatarstan he would try to put aside his views of the Tatars and put aside the war, though he could never fully do so, he tried making peace though that was never fully achieved during his time there. But while he was in Tatarstan seeing his old friends and monarchy he used to pledge loyalty to being overthrown, an anger against the French Revolutionaries and later Napoleon grew.

Now being sent on this mission to Great Britain, he would have to put aside his dislike of the British as his loyalty to his country and hatred of Napoleon came before it. He had been seen as Bernstorff as the perfect candidate for this job, with experience in military policy and diplomacy he was perfectly knowledgeable of the current position of Europe. As the British islands came into view over the horizon he came onto the deck, the frigate was manned by a small contingent of sailors who operated the ship throughout the year. While it was an old design and had been built over 30 years ago it had been properly maintained and had undergone a massive renovation last year. von Stedingk walked to the edge of the ship where a sailor was on break telling him "Ah, we're almost there, and what a show the next few days and years will be."

The sailor looked over the horizon "Let's hope we'll see it through." he told the Count who simply nodded. After a while of standing there in silence he went back to the cellar and crafting a message that was to be sent to London regarding the location of the meeting.

To His Majesty King George III, King of Great Britain and Ireland, and Elector of Hanover,

I send this message as I approach the British mainland, I have been sent to speak with you and your officials regarding the possibility of an alliance between our two nations. As I get nearer to your country I wonder where the location of our meeting will take place? I thank you and look forward to meeting with you.

Sincerely,
Major General Count Curt von Stedingk
Royal Army of Scandinavia

As he received more responses Privy Councilor Christian Gunther Bernstorff sat at his study at the Bernstorff Slot, he would write responses to these nations before informing the King of the messages.
To His Imperial Majesty Francis I, King of the Romans, Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary,

I have also inquired and asked Tatarstan about their view on Napoleon and if they may be interested in joining the other European nations in fighting Napoleon. I have not heard a response yet but the question still stands. We have made peace with the Tatars and have put our previous conflict behind us, we recognize that as a nation we must move forward. We would be willing to allow them into the coalition, as we believe Napoleon is our greatest enemy and Tatarstan would certainly help in our effort against Napoleon.

Signed,
Christian Gunther Bernstorff
Privy Councilor of Scandinavia

To the Court of His Majesty Friedrich Wilhelm III, King of Prussia,

I thank you for your willingness to join this alliance and host its first meeting and I will be sending a representative to Konigsberg on our behalf. We have been engaged in diplomacy with your nation and that of Emperor Francis, as well as with that of King George III they are also willing to join a coalition against Napoleon, we have also made peace with the Tatars and I think our future looks bright. Though on the topic of the coalition I ask when the meeting shall take place?

Signed,
Christian Gunther Bernstorff

Schonbrunn Palace, Vienna, Austrian Empire

Kaiser Francis would sit at the table in the war room, poring over diagrams of maps showing strategies for war with France, when a messenger burst into the room, bearing three letters.

“I bring responses from Scandinavia and Britain, Your Highness, as well as a message from Mexico,” said the out of breath messenger.

“Excellent,” replied the Kaiser, as he opened the letter from Britain.

“Britain has refused to allow Tatarstan into the Coalition unless they do not gain much, and are not given too much power. I believe that can be accomplished,” said the Kaiser as he opened the letter from Scandinavia next.

“Scandinavia says that they are completely fine with Tatarstan in the Coalition,” said the Kaiser. “I will have to inform them of Britain’s response.”

Finally, the Kaiser opened the letter from Mexico.

“Hm. It seems word has gotten around to Mexico that a second coalition is forming, and they wish to partake in it, as they have a large border with France’s Louisiana Territory. They also request a meeting. I will respond, informing them of the meeting in Konigsberg, said the Kaiser.”

The Kaiser wrote up three responses, and sent them with the still-exhausted messenger.

George III, King of Great Britain and Ireland, Elector of Hanover, etc.
I have similar reservations of Tatarstan as you, but they may be a necessary ally against France. I believe that limiting their influence may be possible, if a little difficult. I would also like to inform you that Mexico is wishing to join the Coalition, as they share a long border with France’s colony of Louisiana.
Regards,
Francis I, King of the Romans, Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary, etc.

Christian VII and VI, King of Scandinavia,
I thank you that you have accepted Tatarstan into the Coalition. However, George III of Britain believes that Tatarstan should play a small role. Also, Mexico has requested that they enter the Coalition, as they share a border with France’s territory of Louisiana.
Regards,
Francis I, King of the Romans, Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary, etc.

José Sanchez, President of Mexico,
I appreciate your willingness to fight against France. Your meeting in Mexico City will be unnecessary, as the entire Coalition is sending representatives to a meeting in the Prussian capital city of Konigsberg. I have informed Britain and Scandinavia of your request to join the Coalition.
Regards,
Francis I, King of the Romans, Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary, etc.

Palazzo Reale di Napoli, Napoli, Kingdom of Naples

Ferdinand IV sat in the room of the Royal Court in thought. The Neapolitan position in Italy, once secure, was now threatened by the French Republic, who seems to seek to spread their revolution, by force if necessary. This creates a problem for Ferdinand. A war seemed to be brewing among the monarchies of Europe and the French Republic, and Naples has something to gain out of joining either side. Joining the French could mean security against their own invasion, while joining the enemies of France could lead to them pushing out the French puppet republics in the North.

"Sir, your response?" Louis of House-Philippsthal asked the king. This snapped Ferdinand out of his thought process. This all stemmed from a conversation between Louis, the commander of the Army of the Kingdom of Naples, and Ferdinand, on how best to defend the Kingdom of Naples from French invasion. "Ah, yes, well, I will be raising conscription shortly, and I want you to prepare plans for a invasion of the so-called "Roman Republic". "And what of the possible alliance forming against the French Republic, sire?" "While I want France to be defeated, the risks outweigh the rewards. We will watch how things develop, unless one of the major powers forces us to take sides in the conflict."

By Royal Decree of Ferdinand IV

To all esteemed leaders of the 2nd coalition, the meeting to discuss stratagem against France will be held on March 21st (it is currently March 1st) in Konigsberg.

Meanwhile,

7,000 reservists have grouped with Nollendorf's German Federal Army, and are barracked in preparation to march.

"Do you think we could win?" The King of Prussia, Frederick William III asked of Blucher.

"Its highly possible, although Napoleon showed himself perfectly capable of defeating large forces before. But with 3 to 5 powerful nations bearing down on him, it could be a tough fight for him to emerge victorious." The Field Marshal replied. Friedrich nodded.

"Good, I don't want to attract the ire of Napoleon unless I can defeat him soundly on the field of battle. I trust Nollendorf will not fail us."

"I trust in his abilities as a General your majesty." Blucher said reassuringly. It had the intended effect on the uneasy king.

"Good, good. Hopefully our allies will be able to pull their weight."

January 1st, 1799 - Giza, Egypt

"Ready... Aim... Fire!"

The Battle of the Pyramids was fierce and vicious. The Outremerian Calvary successfully surprised the French Divisions, causing havoc for a short period of time before the French could regroup. Napoleon and his men, however, knew how to deal with Cavalry, and quickly the Egyptian Cavalry forces started to dwindle. However, it was at this moment that the Egyptian Infantry, led by King Ibrahim himself, charged into the fight. The Egyptians were outnumbered and lesser equipped compared to the French Army, but their positions and the distraction of the French by the Egyptian Cavalry was enough that the battle was anything but a cakewalk for either side. Through out the day, volleys of gunfire and cannonballs ravaged the desert and caused bodies to fly.

Things were appearing bleak for the Outremerians by Sunset. Ibrahim's forces were running low, and Louis Alexander din Damietta had been slain in the combat. Ibrahim was prepared to surrender to the Mad Dictator, Napoleon. But then he heard the words he longed to hear through out that day. "They're retreating!" Despite the French's numbers, Napoleon must have gotten cold feet from the massive casualties the French took, and had ordered the French forces to begin retreating from the Desert. As the French were leaving, the Egyptians were taking shots killing more them as they fled.

By the rise of the Moon over the Pyramids, the French had vanished, leaving behind on their dead and their camps. It was a miracle from God himself. Of the 13,000 Egyptians, 6,000 remained, but they were in high spirits as they had finally pushed back the Mad Dictator by themselves, without the need of the English. The 6,000 cheered for the King, cheered for their Country, and cheered for God's almighty graces. As they rode into Giza victorious, they sang the song "Domine Salvum Fac Regem" in Outremerian; a popular song of defiance for the Egyptians as it was the Song of the old Kings of France.

Although they had been victorious, Ibrahim knew that their work was not done, and as the bloody fighting in the Desert had shown, Ibrahim knew he could not beat the French of the Upper Kingdom alone. Hopefully the English would arrive in the Kingdom soon. In the mean time, Ibrahim sent some of these Soldiers to go scour the Desert of Egypt, to find his Mamluke Brothers to reinforce their ranks.

John Adams and his companions, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Alexander Hamilton, 4 of the biggest juggernauts in American history, had arrived in Mexico City for talks with the Mexican president. They rode in their carriage through the outskirts of the city, moving into the suburbs. Adams looked outside, then back in, noting a rather blank expression on Washington’s face.

“You alright, George? You don’t seem very interested in Mexico City.”, Adams said

“Oh, you see one big city, you’ve seen them all. The sooner we can discuss why we’re here with the Mexican president, the better.”, Washington replied.

The carriage continued on through the city until, eventually, they reached the Presidential Palace. The four men each got out.

“Wow, quite extravagant.”, said Alexander Hamilton, commenting on the Presidential Palace.

“Someone should alert the president to our presence.”, said Jefferson.

Then, one of the palace guards saw them, approaching. The four men almost immediately noticed him marching over. Once he got around 3 feet in front of them, the guard stopped.

“Hello”, said Adams. “We are here to speak with your president, at his request. Might we be able to get in?”

The guard, however, did not speak English, so he stood there, confused. “I don’t think he understands us.”, said Hamilton.

“I predicted this, which is why I’ve brought a translator along. He should be here shortly.”, replied Adams. Sure enough, only about 30 seconds later, a second carriage pulled up, with the translator onboard. He hopped out and walked over. “Greetings, Mr. President. Sorry I’m late.”

“No, no, it’s fine. You’ve arrived just in time. Now, could you please tell this guard that we are here to speak with the Mexican president and request passage?”

The translator nodded, then looked to the guard. He spoke to him in Spanish, repeating Adams’ words. Once he finished the guard said “Si”, and allowed them to pass.

They went on into the palace, going towards the president’s office. Once they reached it, Adams knocked on the door.

Royal Palace of Turin
The situation in Europe was getting more and more tense. There were rumours coming in from foreign courts of a potential Second Coalition. If the rumours were true, this Second Coalition could be the key to Sardinia's freedom and its restoration as the pre-eminent Northern Italian state. But, alas, one wrong move could very well result in the deaths of the whole family. Clotilde had yet to overcome her sister's execution at the hands of the raving mobs of Paris. However, if the rumours were true, then Paris would already know about them. Sardinia could perhaps get away with a military build-up.

There was a knock on the door.
"Come in."
It was the Finance Minister. It was time for the monthly budget meeting. Clotilde was in a rather difficult spot, having to juggle the ministers, Chamber of Deputies and the King, all whilst making it seem to the public that she had no political influence.
"Ah, come in Minister."
"Thank you, Your Majesty."
"I was just thinking that it was time for us to finally restore Sardinia's military. We are going to need a rather large one, regardless of who we decide to side with."
"Well, you are in luck, Your Majesty. The Chamber has voted to increase the budget of the military by 20%. Although, it does come at the cost of increased tariffs and taxes. I'm afraid they have also voted to reduce your monthly charitable donation allowance. But, I believe it necessary to make sacrifices if we are to forge our own independent destiny."
"If that is what it costs. I want you to get the War Minister to start recruitment for men over the age of 18. They need to be fully trained and equipped. I also want the construction of 20 new Galleys and 10 new Xebecs. Hopefully, Napoleon would believe these measures are a deterrent against the British and the Austrians."
"Very well, Your Majesty. Anything else?"
"Yes, I need to send a secret message to Vienna, preferable without drawing any eyes. The messenger will need to have a disguise and a fake visa, in order to make his way through the Cisalpine Republic. All goes well, he should make it to the Austrian border without getting caught. I will draft the message now and give it to you soon."
"Very well, Your Majesty."

Secret Message to Vienna
Greetings to you, most esteemed Kaiser.
I am writing to you to discuss the future of Northern Italy. For too long have the people of Northern Italy been occupied by the French. We believe the time is nearing for when the people of Italy shall cast off the shackles of Napoleon. Sardinia, however, is in a strange position. We are currently occupied by the French, yet we are still able to maintain our own military. Our army currently stands at 14,000 strong, with plans to increase it to 30,000. Our navy, unfortunately, stands at only half a dozen ships, however, we are planning the construction of 40 new ships, that will be ready to aid the British in blockading the French and granting them places to land on the continent. My proposal to you is that if you are able to crush the Cisalpine Republic, then the Army of Sardinia will move to attack the French whilst they are hastily attempting to regain their lost client state. We will then put the Army of Sardinia under your command, where they will aid you in defeating the Republic of Genoa and the Roman Republic, as well as invading France and the Helvetic Republic if that is your wish. In exchange, we wish the return of our lost territories of Savoy and Nice, as well as the annexation of Genoa and territories from the Cisalpine Republic, to be determined by you and your allies. Together, our combined strength will be able to liberate the Italian peoples from French tyranny.
Yours truly,
Clotilde of House Bourbon, Queen of Sardinia, Duchess of Piedmont and Savoy, Countess of Nice and Princess of France

Orders from His Majesty, King Carlo Emmanuel IV,
Ordering all men above the age of 18 to go to their local recruitment station for training. Also, orders to the Royal Docks, ordering the construction of 20 new galleys and 10 new xebecs.

They went on into the palace, going towards the president’s office. Once they reached it, Adams knocked on the door.

José is with his Minister of Foreign Affairs Armando Carranza talking about what is happening in Europe when he hears a knock on his office door. He looks at Armando with a raised eyebrow then walks over to said door and opens it. He sees that it is President Adams along with Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton and George Washington so he smiles at the 4 men and speaks in Spanish accented English, "Mr. President, Gentlemen, welcome to Mexico City. May I introduce my Foreign Affairs Minister Armando Carranza. Though he doesn't speak English, he does understand it very well. Now lets get to the crux of why I invited you here and that is to form an alliance and possibly a trade agreement between our two democracies. What do you think?"

"Straight to business. I like this guy.", said Hamilton, as the 4 men took their seats.

George Washington, in particular, seemed a bit wary of the Mexican gentleman's proposal. "Well, the trade agreement does sound good, but a military alliance seems like a bit much."

"Oh, come now, George, it would provide mutual protection from potential European threats. I for one am in favor of this proposed alliance. What do you think, John?", said Thomas Jefferson.

"It does seem somewhat interesting, but I'm still on the fence. What may be the specific inclusions of this trade-agreement-slash-military-alliance?", asked John Adams.

Royal Palace of Turin
The King and Queen had just finished praying when the War Minister knocked on the door. The man came into the room with a report in his hands.
"Your Majesties, I have finished the report on the state of the army and I'm afraid that the news isn't good. Our troops are mostly filled with inexperienced conscripts hastily put together after the disastrous campaigns of the Coalition. The officers are incapable of providing the training necessary to keep up with the new tactics of the French."
Clotilde looked quite worried. Her plans for the future of the kingdom relied on the military providing suitable aid to the Austrians. Something had to be done in order to get the troops up to date.
"Minister, could we ask for foreign officers to come and train our troops?"
"I'm afraid we'd be limited to only the French and the puppet states and I'm sure the French would rather just take control of Piedmont themselves than leave its defence to incompetents."
"Perhaps, we could ask the Italian Republics. Perhaps Rome. If we can get them to agree, we could start to shift the opinions of their officer corps to favour bringing back the Papacy."
"Your idea seems a bit too optimistic, but I don't see any major risks. I'll draft the letter right away."

Letter to the Roman Republic
Greetings to the Roman Republic and her consuls.
I am sending this letter on behalf of the Subalpine Parliament, who have voted to ask for aid from our fellow Italian brethren. The Army of Sardinia is currently in sore need of better officers to train its troops. We believe that Rome possesses the officers that would be needed to train the Army of Sardinia into a true fighting force. As such, we ask that you send over a military officer to help train both our officers and troops in the new ways of war, so brilliantly innovated by Consul Bonaparte. With your aid, the people of Sardinia and Piedmont will be able to defend themselves from the tyranny of the absolutists in Austria, who have raped our lands for centuries. We look forward to your response.
Yours truly,
Queen Clotilde of Sardinia and Piedmont

Palazzo Reale di Napoli, Napoli, Kingdom of Naples

Ferdinand IV sat in his study working on a letter to the Holy Roman Emperor when Louis walked in. "Your Majesty, I have the documents drawn up for the invasion of the Roman Republic, however there is a issue." "And what would that be, Louis?" "Our military is too small for these operations to be carried out. We need a army of at least 40,000 men and 60 cannon, however, what I recommend is reforming the entire army of Naples into the Army of the Dual Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily." "And what would this entail, besides the obvious name change?"

"The Army will consists of 2 corps, each corps having 2 divisions, with 10 battalions of infantry split into two brigades, with a battalion of guard infantry to be held in reserve. Each division will also be assigned 2 battalions of cavalry, one light and one heavy. Finally, each division will have a battery of 15 cannons, manned by 180 men. In the end, if all goes to plan, the full strength of the Army of the Dual Kingdoms should be 47,520 men, enough for a central Italian campaign."

Ferdinand responds almost instantly, "And how much would this cost us, Louis?" "In manpower, we have more than enough to support this, and I talked to the head of the Royal Treasury, and he said we have enough to afford this." "Well then, you have my approval, get on with it." "Yes, your majesty."

After Louis leaves, Ferdinand finishes writing his letter to the Holy Roman Emperor, and called in a messenger. "Get this to Vienna as fast as possible."

Francis I, King of the Romans, Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary, etc.

I am writing this to you to inquire about the Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily partaking in the possible Second Coalition against the French Republic. Even if just rumors spurred by my court, Naples has much reason to join against the French Republic, especially to be rid of the Romans to my north and to restore the Pope to his rightful seat.

Signed,
Ferdinand IV & III
King of Naples and King of Sicily

Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, on a ship in the Mediterranean

Le Emperor stood in his quarters, looking down at his desk, which had previously been cleared with some vigor by himself. The maps that had occupied it now laying on the floor, he leaned on his knuckles, calming himself down.

Honestly he shouldn't be too disappointed, his men were tired and unaccustomed to the desert sun, whereas their opponent had grown up in it. The Egyptians had fought hard, but now Napoleon must turn back to Europe, he had heard rumors that a 2nd Coalition was going to take up arms against him.

A knock on the door. Stamping of feet on the deck above him.

"Come in!" He called. The ship's first officer, Ives Boucher, stepped in, a worried look on his face.

"My Emperor, Royal Navy vessels have been spotted to the starboard. Its a battle fleet." Napoleon swore. He left the room, Boucher in tow, stepping aside for some sailors carrying shot and powder to get to their guns.

He went up to the top deck, and found the Captain of the ship, Admiral Raulf Dubois, peering down his spyglass.

"There is a British fleet?" Napoleon asked, Dubois handed the Emperor a spyglass.

"Yes my Emperor, there they are." He said, pointing with his finger towards the horizon, Napoleon looked down the spyglass. Sure enough, he could see the large silhouette of a British First Line, as well as several other ships.

"Who's flag is that?" Napoleon asked.

"We believe it to be the flag of Admiral Horatio Nelson." Dubois replied.

"Well, let us pray they haven't seen us." Napoleon said. His fleet was composed of primarily lightly to fully unarmed transport ships, with only a few warships.

Royal Palace of Turin
The Duke of Aosta and the War Minister were having a rather heated discussion over where to obtain military equipment from when Clotilde entered the room.
"You called for me, Minister?"
"Yes, Your Majesty. The Army of Sardinia is currently forced to deal with outdated equipment, and even then we don't have enough to equip a further 16,000 troops."
"Why don't you just import them?"
"Ah yes. You see that's the problem. The Duke and I have been debating where to import the equipment from. I have argued to import the equipment from France, whereas the Duke argues for secretly importing from Austria. I believe the Duke's plan is far too risky and would not result in us obtaining the necessary quantities at a reasonable pace. However, if we import from France, then we will easily be able to obtain enough equipment and we'd also be able to make the French suspect nothing regarding our allegiances. The Duke here is far too blinded by his Francophobia to see reason."
"Well, Minister, I have to agree with you. Importing from France is the safer move and will make our betrayal all the more sweeter. Get it done."
"Yes, Your Majesty."

Letter to the Directorate of France
Greetings to the Directorate. I am writing to you to request the importation of French military equipment into Piedmont and Sardinia. The Army of Sardinia is currently underequipped and using outdated equipment. We request French equipment in order to reform our army so that it is ready for a potential war with the Austrians. As it stands, the Army of Sardinia would be crushed by the might of Vienna. But, with French equipment, our army will be able to grow to a sufficient size so as to ensure French dominance over the peninsula. I look forward to your reply.

Yours truly,
Queen Clotilde of Sardinia and Piedmont, on behalf of the Subalpine Parliament

The Napoleonic Wars(Alt-Hist)(IC)(OPEN)

Postby Ovstylap » Fri May 07, 2021 4:07 pm

Marseilles, South of France
11 Ventôse (Primidi)/1st March, 1799

At anytime in history, the embarkation of an army onto a fleet must have been a chaotic affair. Even with scowling quartermaster's, scurrying clerks, and sneering NCOs organizing things, one could be entirely forgiven for getting confused at the sight. Soldiers, sailors, and various civilians would be moving about, moving supplies and cargoes by hand, crane, and rowboat. Imagine then how much more difficult it was to oversee a swift debarkation of a major force, especially one that had withdrawn somewhat hastily. When Xerxes' army disembarked after crossing the Hellespont, or when Piali Pasha's forces landed in Malta in the 16th century, surely many lessons were learned. If only Napoleon's own quartermaster's had been there to learn such wisdom. Alas that was not the case.

It was the early morning of 11 Ventôse, or 1st March by the Gregorian calendar. Napoleon looked across the bay after he had been brought to shore, seeing more vessels coming in; the first rowboats returning to the ships to bring back more troops.
"Ahh, Menou, it is good to be back on French soil. We have much work to do. I expect the governor of Marseilles will be with us imminently." Napoleon spoke without looking at Jacques-François Menou, instead lifting his hand as a naval officer saluted him.

"Indeed it is, mon General, it is merely a shame that we do not have more of the 40,000 soldiers we left for Egypt with last year." Menou spoke with a hint of concern in his voice, and looked towards Napoleon, who nodded, a slight frown creasing his forehead.
"My dear Menou, Kléber and Dumas will continue to serve our interests in Egypt for the time-being. We have more than twelve thousand with us now, the majority will form the core of a new Army of Italy, to assist our allies there. I am confident that we can succeed in both theatres, even if my ambitions for Egypt have been delayed."

Delayed was surely an understatement, the forces under King Ibrahim had fought harder than expected, prevailing despite advancing their cavalry without support. They had been heavily blooded however, and would be unlikely to seriously threaten the remaining Army of the Orient in the north of Egypt for some time at least. The ideal outcome would be a peace deal which would enable those forces to withdraw intact, or one which would result in a more favorable diplomatic scene. At the minimum, Egypt would be in a weaker position to assist the undoubtedly forming new coalition against France; whilst Britain would remain somewhat tied down in the region.
Many thoughts swirled around Napoleon's mind as aides, messengers, and officers moved to and from him.

Moving along the dock, the Governor of Marseilles, and several officials, came to greet Napoleon and the expanding entourage accompanying him. "Consul, it is marvelous to bear witness to the return of the army, we anticipate good news." The governor was enthusiastic, though at this moment was not Napoleon's primary concern.

"Thank you for your warm greeting, I trust that such warmth will be shown by the people and business of Marseilles to those who have returned from Egypt. We inflicted heavy casualties upon the forces of Egypt, and have retained a strong contingent there. Of course it is only prudent that our focus is upon France and her frontiers, would you not agree?" Napoleon looked towards the Chasseur officer in his somewhat worn green uniform who stood to the flank of the Governor and port officials.
"All will be well looked after, and it is comforting to have your presence here, rumour travels of mobilization in the Austrian parts of Italy." Napoleon nodded, smiling reassuringly. "I expected as much." He turned to the officer, who stood to attention. "Consul, three issues require your attention. Minister Talleyrand has had me dispatched to collect such messages as you would need for your return, we are blessed that Marseilles is the port the majority of the fleet has returned to."
Napoleon nodded, and smiled. There was work to be done.

Over the next few hours and days, the full debarkation of those who had returned from Egypt would take place, with many soldiers and sailors jubilantly visiting the taverns and brothels of Marseilles before receiving their next orders. Napoleon, with some assistance, set to task handling what could be done in Marseilles, even whilst his aides arranged his expected return to Paris.

"A couple of hundred criminals handed over to the army, I don't need to be informed of that personally, hmm, what else." Napoleon took up another paper, whilst a clerk scribbled down a note. "Now these proposals, from Monsieur Gaudin, good, good. I expect before this year is out he will be Minister of Finance. The more horses we can breed, the less customs foreign merchants can avoid, the more efficiently we raise our taxes, all of these are essential. Draft a letter for me to sign off, encouraging Gaudin in developing his proposals."

Several other domestic issues were attended to, but Napoleon's thoughts were primarily focused on the mobilization of France's likely enemies, and the messages received from Bavaria, Sardinia-Piedmont, and the Repubblica Romana.
General Wrede's secret message was a simply superb combination of amusement and reassurance for Napoleon. He was bemused, though complimented to be referred to as Emperor. It was good to know that here was a man who had the interests of his nation at heart. A man of reason, of sensibility. A secret message would have to be returned to him, encouraging him in his endeavors.

Now the message from Sardinia was of a somewhat more complicated nature. At this moment, significant amounts of equipment and munitions were being procured for the French army and navy. This was both an industrial and financial challenge. Selling armaments to Sardinia would bring in currency, but also delay the procurement process for the military. At the same time, it could help to align them more clearly with France. Napoleon read the advisory notes from Talleyrand again, and was glad that he had delayed a response to receive his input. Reassurance would be needed from Sardinia-Piedmont, but following that, it would be prudent to enable their further armament.

Consul Angelucci's letter was most interesting to Napoleon, who had spent a considerable amount of time dwelling on the concerns of Italy. The Repubblica Romana was the most steadfast ally of France on the Italian peninsular, though its leadership was not currently decisively arranged behind one strong man, a factor Napoleon believed essential. It would be sensible not to ignite the coming conflict too soon, but Consul Angelucci's cause was one that was broadly acceptable to Napoleon. Of course, it could be realized far more effectively with Sardinia-Piedmont joining forces to encourage Naples into working with the Romans and France herself.

By the evening, Consul Napoleon had dictated messages to be sent to Queen Clotilde of Sardinia and Piedmont, and Consul Angelucci of Repubblica Romana. He handwrote a message to General Wrede, entrusting it to one of Talleyrand's own finest messengers. These were sent out in that order, before a final letter was to be directed to Duke Maximilian of Bavaria.

To the renowned Queen Clotilde of Sardinia and Piedmont, I trust that this letter finds you well. The prospect of providing material assistance to your own forces is certainly one of importance to me. As you are no doubt aware, unsatisfied with her defeat, Austria is seeking to mobilize its forces for another war with France, deeming it unacceptable that France's people should choose their own destiny. Due to the tense diplomatic decision, I know that you understand that France must prepare herself for the possibility of conflict, and that as such, armaments are in high demand by the state.

However, noting this, Sardinia's own safety from the ambitions of Austria are of the utmost importance to myself, and to France. Again, as a ruler, you will agree that one must look to secure their frontiers before committing overly to foreign expense. To this end, France would be willing to provide armaments at a fair price to the Sardinia-Piedmontese nation, yet Sardinia-Piedmont must be bound to neutrality towards France, and deny its territory to the warmongering efforts of Austria. Rest assured that France, and our other Italian allies, would march to your own assistance should Austria attack you. If these conditions can be met, our governments can co-ordinate their plans without undue delay.

Sincerely, Consul Napoleon Bonaparte.

To the honorable Consul Angelucci, we too count you as our natural friends and allies. I trust that this letter finds you in good health as spring begins. Be assured that the cries of the Italian people for freedom from oppression of any nature are heard by France, and that the long term prospect of an Italian state ruled by Italian people is something most acceptable, and desirable. To that end, France seeks a united front with Repubblica Romana, and with Sardinia-Piedmont, the Cisalpine Republic, and ideally with Naples.

I would implore you to continue to stand for Rome's best interests, in friendship with France, and to continue to co-ordinate with France, avoiding unnecessary conflict for now, and ideally seeking good relations with Naples, such that they may not be drawn into coalition with Austria. I trust that trade can also continue to flourish between France and her sister republic, as well as with those in Italy who agree with our ambitions.

In good faith, Napoleon Bonaparte.

To the wise General Werde, your courage in reaching out to me is most admirable, as is your sense of duty for your nation. I trust that your Duke may yet consider the prospect of avoiding warfare between Bavaria and France, which would be most wasteful. Regardless of what may come of further diplomacy between our nations, your own choices are testament to the good nature of the Bavarian people, and the reality that Bavaria's fate should not be to be the battleground of Prussian and Austrian ambitions. Keep yourself in good health. I appreciate your offer of assistance, and accept it, though still would like an outcome where it is unnecessary.

With gratitude, Napoleon Bonaparte, 'Emperor'

To the esteemed Duke Maximilian of Bavaria. Bad news travels fast. It is clear that once again, most tragically, the great powers of Europe are preparing themselves for war, with Prussia and Austria mobilising, discontent with the righteous peace that followed the war of the First Coalition. Undoubtedly, knowing the strength and determination of France, Austria as a bitter warmonger will seek to form a coalition. Naturally, seeking Bavaria to be a member would be prudent, given the martial strength, and strategic location of her. It is my hope that you might see reason and avoid tying Bavaria's fate to the whims of Austria especially.

It is clear that Austria seeks hegemony in Germany, and that Prussia is a rising state. Both would need the support of Bavaria in achieving their ambitions, but both would also need to overcome France so that they have no western challenger to their will to dominate Europe. They will seek to use you in a war against France. Tragically, they would march through your territory, draining it of resources, maybe even fighting upon your soil, to the devastation of the population. Even then, they would demand that Bavaria take major part in the fighting, forcing this if necessary, lest they renege on their bribes, or insult the good character of your state. This would reduce their own loss, and weaken you ready for them to overcome you. A war with France will not result in any positive outcome for Bavaria, in the long or short terms.

Dear Duke, what I ask of you is Bavarian neutrality towards France. Conflict between us is not necessary, nor desired. Peace would be prosperous- Bavaria is the largest German state nearby that France can willingly engage in trade with, and of course France does not seek to seize control of all of Germany, as Prussia or Austria would surely do, given the chance. Whilst France can genuinely assist in realising Bavarian ambitions, and providing backing against Austrian and Prussian threats to your sovereignty, those two powers would only seek your friendship temporarily.

I ask, as a man of reason, to you, a man of duty and righteousness, to consider these words, and to avoid war with France to the betterment of powers which do not have your best interests at heart.

With hope, and admiration,
Consul Napoleon Bonaparte.

February 26th, 1799 - Kharga Outpost, Egypt,

All was quiet in the oasis outpost of Kharga. Morid Din Bey-Mamluke was resting with his trusted guards in the Fortress of El-Bagawat, named after the famous Cemetery of the city. He was smoking his Shisha as he was trying to relax, but he could do little to relax; Egypt was under attack by Foreign Devils. Complete radicals who spat on God and his graces; the French. The Mamlukes under his control had been defeated at Samhud, and fearing further defeat and failure, Morid used the rights given to him under the Monarchs of Outremer to lead his forces away from the fighting to defend the outskirts of Egypt. Fortunately for him, there had been no sign of the radical French anywhere in the Oasis of Egypt, but he was expecting Egypt would collapse and that he would have to deal with the French, or face incursion by the Muslims of the East or the Nubians of the South.

Little was Morid expecting one of his men to rush in that day. He kneeled before Morid, and yelled "My Lord. Messengers from the King have arrived."

"Messangers?" Morid said, smoke coming out of his mouth. "V-very well, send them in."

The guard ran off as guards put away Morid's Shisha. A few moments later, 3 messengers arrived at Morid's room, and also kneeled before Morid before standing up.

"Lord Morid Din Bey-Mamluke," one of the Messengers said. "We are pleased to report that the French were defeated near Giza by the Royal Army."

Morid was surprised; not expecting Ibrahim to be successful against the foreign invader. "Really?" He said, unable to hide his surprise well. "That's... good."

"Lord Morid, the King has requested your men's service. He fully believes that with your aide, as well as the British, that Egypt can remove the remaining French forces from the realm."

Morid looked around, then walked around the room. "The Kings request," Morid said, "will be refused. He knows by the laws that the Mamlukes are allowed to stay in the Oasis to guard them in case of the war. The Oasis are ours to guard, and we shall not abandon them while that, Napoleon Devil is out conquering Egypt."

"We have reports," one of the guards says, "That Dictator Napoleon has left Outremer. Only a few thousand soldiers of his remain. Your forces can turn the tide and defeat these French Invaders once and for all."

That too gave Morid surprise. Perhaps God was favoring the King? He had expected Ibrahim to collapse in the face of the Foreigners and for him to take over for Ibrahim's failures, but if the King is actually pushing the French back...

Morid sighed. He realized that if Ibrahim were successful without the Mamluke's aide, Morid would look foolish. "Very well," Morid said. "Inform the King that the Mamluke's shall return to aid the Royal Army. Allow us a month to prepare and we shall meet them in the town of Giza. You messengers are dismissed."

The Messengers left. Morid grunted in anger. "That damn bastard Ibrahim may actually win against the French."

"That will not delay your rightful rule over Outremer, my lord," one of Morid's guards said. "We all know that Ibrahim is a coward and a fool."

"You know that," Morid said, "and I know that, but apparently God does not."

"The Lord works in mysterious ways; but his work shall always be done."

Morid sighed. "I must inform the Mamlukes. We must prepare our forces. I'll be damned if Ibrahim's victory comes not from the Mamlukes."

Cairo, 12 Ventôse (Duodi)/2nd March, 1799

It had been a shockingly cold night, due to the lack of cloud. Hopefully, the uninterrupted sun would soon remove the morning chill Dumas felt in his core. Perhaps he was coming down with something. A member of his staff entered his room, bringing him a light breakfast of buttered bread, boiled eggs, and some dried ham. He wished him a good morning before withdrawing. Things had been far too quiet since the battle at Giza. Although there had been time for rest and an orderly withdrawal of major elements of the army, it was likely that King Ibrahim would have gathered more forces, and that the British may also be able to provide support to the Egyptian cause.

Within the hour, Dumas was at his headquarters, receiving reports from various members of his staff. Kléber had left Dumas to oversee the preparations for the defence of Cairo, whilst he had been assisting with Napoleon's relocation to France.

"There's only been the regular amount of activity, with minor skirmishes and clashes between our own patrols and those of King Ibrahim. Few of these have included Mamelukes, which is a relief, though no doubt temporary. If the weather has been favorable, Napoleon should have been back in France last week, to oversee affairs there. A messenger from Kléber arrived last night also, stating that efforts to recruit irregulars in Alexandria have met with success, and that we should increase our efforts here. Our orders remain the same." Dumas' chief of staff was a by the book officer, with a strong inclination for realism and pragmatism. He looked to Dumas, as the latter digested the information given.

"I expect that Egypt's forces will come to us soon, it is our duty to deny Cairo for a sufficient time so as to allow a complete consolidation of our positions in the north of the country, occupying Alexandria, Damietta, Tanta, and Bahmaniyeh. This will be a rearguard action, as most of the Armie d'Orient is already positioned elsewhere than Cairo, we are the southern end. When Egypt comes, we shall conduct a fighting withdrawal, with my own intent to withdraw to Shubra Keit. By tomorrow, the final main contingents of the scientific expedition should have left the city, as well as several wagons containing wealth and artefacts from Cairo. You know the rest. Make sure our own troops are well-rested, and continue to gather what irregular local forces you can before Ibrahim comes. Carry on."

That was likely the last of the weekly situation overviews Dumas would give from Cairo for some time, and his mind was focused on the conduct of the coming campaign more so than the various matters discussed for the rest of the meeting. The withdrawal from Cairo would have to be soon, as Ibrahim's forces grew in number every time reports came back. If only Napoleon had left more of the experienced infantry and the dragoons with himself and Kléber.

March 1799

The Royal Palace, Madrid

The city of Madrid was a beautiful and prosperous city with a busy, flourishing population, with newspapers flying throughout the city and the Empire as a whole announcing that a Second Coalition might be formed against the Napoleonic Empire. Meanwhile, things don't look so pink outside the Empire, with American Natives trying to rise up, break free and shatter the Empire who despite losing, still dominates most of the American Continent. We lost Louisiana to the French, Mexico, and the North to the USM (United States of Mexico), clinging to hold on to the Caribbean, Central America, and the South. The Empire is slowly declining unless we do a radical change to the ways of Spain itself. King Charles IV was sitting in his throne room trying to hold what remained of the Empire together, at least in semblance. As for Spain's position in the world, we are still an Empire, a second-rate Empire, despite being still large and powerful. The British are hostile to us, although both have our skepticism about Napoleon's ambitions, especially if they have such in Spain, however, we won't forget them as rivals. For now, His Majesty hasn't taken any position yet and stays neutral on the matter. As for the Colonial matter, the Colonial Army is fully mobilized and deployed throughout our American Dominion to try and suppress the unrest and revolt. The Empire is overstretched as it is and decentralization wasn't an option. A diplomat arrived in the throne room.

"Your Majesty! The Second Coalition against Napoleon might be formed. Probably by Austria, Prussia, and Great Britain."

"So what? We are neutral on this whole war. Our Empire is falling and we need to maintain it, not risk our resources in other wars."

"Yes. Maintaining our Colonial Empire is important, but soon we might need to pick a side. Maybe each might try and persuade us with either diplomacy or war to do so."

"I hope not through the latter. We shall wait for what. How is Naples doing?"

"They are preparing to invade the Roman Republic, which is good friends with France. If they will push forward with this we will have to confront with either protecting Naples or abandon it. Both of these are really bad for us. On the other hand, the Austrians might side with us, or at least with Naples."

"Ah ffs. We should kick some sense in those idiots soon. If we refuse to help them, the Austrians might spread their influence there, in Bourbon land."

"That's why we will need to pick a side soon."

Konigsberg, Prussia.
March 19th

"Are all of the arrangements in order?" Friedrich WIlhelm III asked. His aid, Hermann Mueller nodded.

"Yes your Majesty, all of necessary parts are ready." The King nodded.

"Outstanding. The guests should be arriving in two days time." He said. Mueller nodded.

"Excellent your Majesty, all will be ready." Friedrich nodded a final time as he left the hall where the meeting was to take place.

Outside he met with Colonel Steienmeier, commander of the Grenadier Guards Regiment.

"Your Majesty." He said with a salute.

"How goes the Guard?" Freidrich asked.

"Well my King. They are well drilled for the oncoming ceremony. The musicians have been practicing hard for the past 4 days."

"Excellent, I don't want to appear as weak or untrustworthy before our allies."

"We will not disappoint you your Majesty."

Vienna, Austrian Empire

Charles von Istria, the Kaiser's Minister of Foreign Affairs, sat in his office in Vienna. His desk was cluttered as much as the war room in the palace, with papers detailing messages from the other Coaliton members. However, none of the various bits of clutter on his desk mattered, not in this moment. Charles grabbed a small satchel with papers detailing Austrian war strategy as well as other important information for the Second Coalition. He wrote a small letter to Prussia informing them of his departure, and left for Konigsberg.

Friedrich Wilhelm III, King of Prussia,
I am writing to inform you that I, the Austrian representative to the conference in Konigsberg, am currently en route to Konigsberg, and shall arrive in a couple of days. I wish that this conference will be beneficial for all of us.
Sincerely,
Charles von Istria, Foreign Minister of the Austrian Empire.

To His Excellency Christian Gunther Bernstorff,

His Imperial Majesty, the Great Khan Boroghul, views with great displeasure the demonic atheistic forces in France who toppled their rightful ruler. His Imperial Majesty believes every God-fearing monarch should oppose the forces of chaos and revolution. His Imperial Majesty would be willing to enter into a broad coalition against the forces of chaos, but His Imperial Majesty would need certain assurances. His Imperial Majesty, by providing the largest number of troops, should have the right to choose a Generalissimo to coordinate the coalition's war efforts.

With Respect,
