To the leaders of the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese Nationalist Party,
We have took notice of the alliance between the Chinese Communist and Nationalist parties, this alliance created for the purpose of what we see as the protection and defense of China against the Soviet and Japanese threats. It is a threat that we in France fear as well and one that we will take measures against and hope will not spread. New York TimesPresident Roosevelt Announces 'Third New Deal'
President Franklin D. Roosevelt announced a 'Third New Deal' program, to built up on the successes of his First and Second New Deal programs. In his press conference, the President outlined the agenda he would seek to implement. "America is the land of opportunities. America is the greatest republic on Earth. We cannot accept poverty and unemployment. With a comprehensive, reformist agenda my administration shall continue our efforts to eradicate poverty, end unemployment and take our country out of the Great Depression. We shall not rest until every American can have the chance to find a job and earn a decent living."
"The Third New Deal," the President stated, "will enact a series of necessary reforms to support the American people and fight against poverty and employers' abuses. We shall use the full might of the American government to implement this ambitious agenda. We shall regulate the workplace, so that the rights of the American labor are protected. I pledge to outlaw child labor, establish a federal minimum hourly wage of $0.40, and require overtime pay for employees who work in excess of forty-hours per week. Those reforms are long overdue, will raise the standards of living of the American workers and boost economic growth."
"My administration," the President continued, "shall work towards eradicating slums and providing safe, sanitary and decent housing to all Americans. I will work with Congress to legislate substantial subsidies, to be paid from the federal government to local public housing agencies, to improve living conditions for low-income families. We will not tolerate slums and unhealthy dwellings in America. That's a promise."
The President announced that this 'Third New Deal' would also include a major healthcare reform. "I shall work with our Democratic majority in Congress to amend the Social Security Act of 1935 - one of the key achievements of our administration - to include mandatory federal health insurance to those aged sixty-five and older. It is an outrage that our country, the richest country on earth, does not provide health coverage to all our elderly citizens. How can we let our fathers and grandfathers be denied of healthcare? In this country no one above the age of sixty-five should be denied healthcare coverage."Governor Alf Landon Criticizes 'Third New Deal', Attacks 'Concentration of Power'
The presumptive Republican nominee for the Presidency for the 1936 elections, Governor of Kansas Alf Landon, criticized President Roosevelt's announcement of a 'Third New Deal'. In a press conference held a few hours after the President's own press conference, he attacked the announced programs as 'government overreach'. "I supported part of the President's New Deal agenda," Governor Landon stated, "because the emergency circumstances of the Great Depression made necessary a temporary intervention of the government in our economy. However, now the crisis has ended, yet the President, instead of ending those extraordinary measures, seeks to implement more of them."
"We must oppose this government overreach," the Governor said. "Concentration of power at the hands of the federal government is dangerous to our liberty. Political liberty and economic liberty are closely tied together. If you give up your economic liberties, if the government becomes your employer, then how independent are you really? You end up becoming reliant on the whims of federal bureaucrats in DC. In essence, you become a servant of the state. This is dangerous. I pledge to fight back against this radical liberal agenda."
The Governor also criticized the proposed healthcare reform. "There is a reason why last year, when the Social Security Act passed through Congress, this healthcare reform was dropped by the President. That socialistic program invades every area of freedom in this country. It grants the federal government control over our healthcare. Now the President, having not learned his lesson, seeks once more to push through this dangerous idea. We shall make sure that it will be rejected once more."
On his own agenda, the Governor said; "Under my administration, we would restore freedom of enterprise and end many of the emergency New Deal programs pushed through by this President. I have to clarify that I do not oppose all government programs legislated by the current administration. I do believe that some of them are necessary and were long overdue. We do need a measure of social welfare. But a lot of those programs hinder economic growth and limit the liberties of the American people. I shall also legislate extensive tax cuts, especially for lower and middle class Americans, to boost consumption and drive economic growth. Only a free market can produce the wealth and prosperity that America needs and deserves."

"Esteemed Fuhrer Adolf Hitler
Good day to you from the Kingdom of the Netherlands. I am Prime Minister Hendrik Colijn, and I am sure that we both understand the tumultuous positions that both of our nations are in currently. This year may prove to be one of the most impactful years that we have seen since 1914, or further.
I shall skip any more pleasantries, I am sure that you are a busy man. I, and all of the Netherlands notice that, whilst the current German Ideology is perhaps unique and rather different from our own, that successes within your nation have been seen, in recovering from the Great Depression where the Netherlands have failed.
I would propose that our nations may benefit from mutual cooperation. For instance, should we provide access for proud German companies and industries to establish themselves within the Dutch Kingdom, a deal such as that could benefit us both. You may understand that the Netherlands is still suffering rather harshly from the depression, unemployment is still a huge issue within my nation. As such, more business, especially foreign businesses which would not rely on our government and it's subsidies and the like would bring needed wealth to the Dutch, and employment.
As for Germany, we see that such a plan would increase the production of your various companies, such as in arms manufacturing. With a foreign base of which unemployed citizens are plentiful, German companies would gain a greatly increased workforce...
Should such a proposition be of interest to the Third Reich, I will always be waiting for a response. In addition, if there's any other business you wish to pursue with our country, you need but ask.
Best wishes to you..."

"Honourable Joseph Stalin.
Allow me to introduce myself. I am Hendrik Colijn, Prime minister of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. I had received a rather interesting dispatch that was sent to our nation from yours, detailing that, and I quote: 'Some of your colonies are unhappy with rule by the Netherlands' and 'if you turn communist, your will see the Red Army coming into your colonies to crush every revolt and every invasion'.
Whilst having an ally in which would support the Netherlands' colonial endeavors without question is a rather tempting offer, I am sorry to say that your request is rather... Well, farfetched.
Whilst I am not against social reform as it stands, I must say, with all due respect, the Netherlands could never see a proletariat revolution and a Communist government. And that is not I saying this because I am against the concept, but simply because both Internal, and External factors prevent your request from taking place.
We do not see complete evil in your nation like many of the Western nations do, for instance the United Kingdom of the French Third Republic. As such, we could always be interested in dealing with the Soviets, in whatever capacity.
I, for one hope that our ideological differences would not force us to abandon cordial relationships between both of our proud nations.
Take care, sir Stalin."

"Your honour President Gaston Domergue
I am Hendrik Colijn, the current Prime Minister of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Firstly, I would like to give my, and all of the Netherland's congratulations to the French Republic on their swift recovery from the Great Depression, a fact that we ourselves unfortunately do not share.
I send this message in the light of the tensions that are slowly, but surely rising all across Europe. We understand that the Ideology of Germany makes the Third Republic restless, as it does us... I believe that they are making moves to void the demilitarization of the Rhineland that you and your ally in the United Kingdom had established per the Treaty of Versailles, and I would assume that a sharp, wary mind like yours, sir Domergue has seen this already.
In addition, I believe that both of our proud nations have reason to be quite wary indeed of the power in East Asia, that being the Empire of Japan. Though they have yet to officially threaten our interests in South East Asia currently, their actions and future actions against the Chinese would perhaps show us that they are not to be trusted. I propose that we open up discussions between our nations on how to approach the Japanese situation. Our colonies, Indochina for your country and the East Indies for us prove to be valuable breadbaskets and boons for our home countries, and it would be quite the disaster should our colonies be wrenched from our hands.
Please reply to us at your earliest convenience. Best wishes to you, and France."

"Good day to you, sir Colijn.
This is General-Governer Bonifacius Cornelis de Jonge speaking. We would like to update you and the home country on the situation we are facing in the Colony, and in addition a request.
The people of the East Indies are starting to develop a united culture together, as you may already be aware of. I fear that you may not know the extent of the situation, however. There have been many a violent protest, rebellion and strike over the years here within the colony, and I can assure you that these problems are not getting any less frequent... By all means, they may be getting even more frequent, as the local's cries continue to be ignored.
There is only so much I can do to keep the peace and stability of the Dutch East Indies with what minimal power, supplies and clout I have, Hendrik. I can assure you that if something is not done soon, as in within ten years time, something catastrophic may happen to the crown jewel of the Dutch Empire. Do we have confirmation to reallocate some of the supplies we are sending away to the Home Country in order to help with the local situation? In addition, I suggest that subsidies are sent to the colony soon, in order to improve the economic situation of the East Indies, and thus help with suppressing some of these local revolts and strikes.
I understand the situation within the home country, and I do not expect to be sent much help in terms of supply anytime soon. Perhaps I, and the Colonial Government I run can be given the autonomy to begin discussions with other nations around us for potential help with the situation?
Once more, I reiterate. If something is not done here in a reasonable amount of time, something could very well begin, of which we would all have no power to stop... Whatever the home country can promise to us would be appreciated..."

Statement from the Department of State of the United States of America
The United States of America is not the overlord of the Republic of Estonia nor can it negotiate in place of its lawful government. If there are to be negotiations, they must be between the government of the Republic of Estonia and the government of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Those negotiations must be in accordance to international law, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics must cease attempts to change the internationally recognized borders through violence.
The United States government encourages the Estonian and Soviet governments to both refrain from military aggression and to solve their disputes through diplomacy. The United States government hopes that peace will prevail.

Tsarstvo Alyaski wrote:The current Prime Minister of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Hendrik Colijn and the party that he leads has done little to improve and help the country out of the financial troubles it has been facing for many a year now. Mr Colijn has kept with a strict fiscal policy, which whilst his government's actions have managed to keep the country relatively stable, especially compared to the Netherland's neighbors such as the German Third Reich, or the French Third Republic, the troubles have only stagnated, rather than in the process of recovering. This is because only little effort has been put into improving the economy of the Dutch Kingdom, with the concepts of subsidised workplaces, and labor funds only having been experimented on during the year of 1934 and onwards, and unlike the similar New Deal in the United States of America, these actions have, unfortunately not helped the Netherlands pull itself out of the Depression in a meaningful way. In fact, the Gold Standard still exists in the Netherlands, one of the only few countries left in the world to continue with the policy. This only ever weakens potential recovery...
Protests and strikes are instead discouraged by harsh punishments. The Dutch Military and Police Forces are ruthless in their resolutions to instability, deaths of protestors and strikers have, and will most likely still happen.
It is the sands of time which are causing the Netherlands to improve it's economy, more so than internal resolutions... As other nations start, or have pulled themselves out of the Depression, and have begun trading worldwide again, the Netherlands, a nation of which relies on international trade in many ways sees the benefits as well.
The Government is planning to drop the Gold Standard, finally. However it may not be until '37 when it is officially made extinct.Whilst the Home Nation, the Kingdom of the Netherlands has suffered greatly from the impact of Black Tuesday, and the ensuing Great Depression, many of it's colonial holdings have seen less of an effect... There are some good reasons for that. For the Dutch East Indies, it has always been rather separated from the international world, much more so than it's rulers in Europe. The colony is meant to act as a 'Breadbasket' of which to help maintain the Economic and Governmental stability of it's home country more than it could have ever been involved with the rest of the world, and as such does not deal with other nations of the world as a sovereign entity much, if at all.
In addition, and this is more so unfortunate news rather than anything positive, the East Indies does not suffer as much from the depression as the Netherlands itself as... Well, it has less to suffer from. Though the Dutch East Indies has around eight times, perhaps even more the population of it's overlords in Europe, it suffers from a worse economy, meaning that the average person of the colony sufferers from a wage eight times, perhaps even lower than the average Dutch in Europe. This means that, though the depression has less to affect, it would not be able to make lives in the East Indies much more worse anyhow...
Indeed, the Netherland's jewel is suffering from a multitude of problems, and the people who lead the colony, including Governer-General Bonifacius Cornelis de Jonge for instance would find themselves way over their heads due to it...
Ignoring the pitiful economy the Dutch East Indies have, there are two other, major problems that the colony suffer from. One internal, and one external.
To begin with, External. The Japanese Giant to the north only continues to stir awake. Driven by a lust for Black Gold, the Empire of the Rising Sun sees itself gearing up for immense colonial expansion, eyeing up China's entirety and the territories of the Pacific Ocean. If the Japanese would wish to cause trouble for the East Indies, the result could be catastrophic.
And in the colony itself, a unified Indonesian spirit only continues to grow, and as such foster much resentment for their Dutch overlords. The colony has done little to support the sufferings of it's local populations, and may have in fact made their situations worse compared to pre - colonial times, on many occasions. Only now, as the world roars around the isles of the Indies do the population wake up to see the injustices being wrought upon them.
The colony is in a tumultuous position. As tensions brew between overlord, and subject, it may only be a matter of time before the Dutch Kingdom loses it's crown jewel... The people of the Dutch East Indies have their work cut out for them, should stability, and perhaps even eventually prosperity come to the colony...Encrypted message: Amsterdam, the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Berlin, the German Third Reich

New York TimesPresident Roosevelt Signs Housing Act
President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the United States Housing Act into law. The purpose of the law is, “To provide financial assistance to state and local governments for the elimination of unsafe and unsanitary housing conditions, for the eradication of slums, for the provision of decent, safe, and sanitary dwellings for families of low income, and for the reduction of unemployment and the stimulation of business activity, to create a United States Housing Authority, and for other purposes”.
More specifically, this act requires that for each new public housing unit created, a unit of substandard quality must be removed. This policy will ensure an increase in the quality of housing. While the federal government will provide funding, the ownership and operation of the housing will be the responsibility of the local public housing authorities, appointed by local elected officials. The sponsoring legislators of the bill were Representative Henry B. Steagall, Democrat of Alabama, and Senator Robert F. Wagner, Democrat of New York.
"This act," President Roosevelt said as he signed it into law, "shall ensure that no American will have to live in slums. No longer will American citizens have to live in unsanitary and unsafe conditions. It is a matter of human dignity and human decency. America is a land of dignity and decency. That's why we had to act and that's why I'll do everything in my powers to ensure that every American can live in humane conditions. God Bless America."Governor Alf Landon Campaigns in Massachusetts
The presumptive Republican nominee for the Presidency for the 1936 elections, Governor of Kansas Alf Landon, campaigned in Massachusetts. He held a rally in Boston in which he blasted the President and his policies. "This President endangers the liberties of the American people. We are seeing a dangerous expansion of governmental powers. We are seeing the government interfering in every aspect of our lives. This must end now!"
Governor Landon also outlined his own agenda. "Instead of more government agencies and more regulations, a Landon presidency will cut taxes for all Americans, cut red tape and unleash American entrepreneurship. I believe that the hard-working people of this country know better how to manage their own money that the bureaucrats in DC! I believe that, after tax, Americans should have the choice of how to spend their money. I want to extend that choice. President Roosevelt trusts the bureaucrats, I trust the people."
Governor Landon also talked about foreign policy. "The Democrats want to entangle America into the affairs of Europe. I believe we must focus on America and the American people. We shouldn't waste our dollars or the blood of our young men for the old and corrupt empires of Europe. We should instead seek to create prosperity here. As President, I will implement an America First policy. I will put America and Americans first, instead of placing foreigners first as the President does."
