The years is 2091. The Third World War (2061 - 2063) saw humanity unified under a single government for the first time in its long history. The United Nations were a reality, not a dream. Democracy and liberty were safeguarded by the Revised UN Charter, imposed on all member states. Humanity could expand abroad. Colonies were established in Luna, Mars and the Asteroid Belt.

The Luna Colony would house a population of fifty thousand while the various Mars colonies would house a combined population of three hundred thousand. Arts, entertainment and commerce flourished. The colonies of the Asteroid Belt - established by private corporations - were far smaller in size, being mining outposts meant to power up the UNs economy.

It was in one of these asteroid outposts that an ancient artifact was discovered during a mining operation. It pinpointed the location of a dormant Wormhole Gate at the edges of Solar System, which could theoretically allow a starship to travel at faster than light distance. An expedition sent by the United Nations Space Command found the Gate and, using the artifact, activated it.

With no means of knowing where that Gate led, it was sealed off from any starships for two years. But now, despite concerns, the United Nations Space Command has given the green light to Operation Starlight. A joint military-scientific venture, it will see a team of military and scientific personnel take a starship into the Gate. What lies ahead, is unknown to everyone…








Introduction

Operation Starlight is a character-focused, sci-fi RP whose aim is to tell an epic space adventure influenced by the classics of science fiction. A dynamic RP, the fate of the crew and the shape of the world will be shaped by the actions of the players.

*There is no predetermined plot. The world is shaped by the players. Whether alien cultures encountered are friendly or hostile shall be determined by the crew. Whether the ship manages to escape destruction or suffers considerable damage is determined by the crew. Actions matter. Not only the actions of commanding officers, but also of those of lower rank whose actions may save the ship or jeopardize its fate.

*The OP will provide storylines, with the pace of each storyline determined by the players. While the first storylines will understandably be determined by the OP, later storylines will be determined by the actions of the players and the consequences of those actions.

*Collaboration between players is encouraged - and indeed essential - to tell a good sci-fi story. This meant to be a collaborative storytelling effort.

*Players are expected to make at least one post every week (minimum). Posts must also be at least two - three paragraphs long, excluding dialogues between players or actions during combat. It is understandable, however, that from time to time a player may not be able to make a post: in that case, contact the OP through telegram to mention the absence and how long it will last.


Starlight

The ‘Starlight’ is the vessel used by the namesake operation. It uses a constant acceleration drive. Usual procedure is for the ‘Starlight’ to accelerate halfway the distance at a rate of 1g, and deaccelerate for the rest of the travel in order to avoid flying past the target.

However, ‘Starlight’ can travel at a constant acceleration of up to 10g if the crew is drugged, in order to counteract the effects of the g-load. While the crew is dragged, operations are conducted by AI, but this procedure is not recommended due to the limitations of AI technology as well as due to the possibility of the crew stumbling into a dangerous situations while unconscious. It can however prove useful if there is no discernable danger ahead.

‘Starlight’ is equipped with an experimental laser cannon that theoretically allows it to cut through the hulk of any enemy vessel. Aside from the laser cannon, ‘Starlight’ is equipped with turrets firing 40mm, armor piercing projectiles. As the laser cannon draws a lot of energy and can lead to partial shipwide loss of power, turrets are the recommended weapon.


Technology

Soldiers in 2091 still use good, old-fashioned bullets. However, Power Armors have made troopers far more deadly than in the past. Power armors allow soldiers to withstand high-gravity environments and to have enhanced physical power, while also providing adequate protection against most weapons. Helmets allow for night vision, X-ray vision, thermal vision and VI assistance to pinpoint targets and analyze artifacts.

Modifications (Mods, for short) have flourished in the past two decades. Through cybernetic implants, humans can acquire several advantages, including; greater hearing, greater physical prowess, replacing lost limbs, greater stamina. While Mods provide advantages, their high cost and the health risks involved - both during their installation process and in maintaining them - means that not everyone has them.

AI has advanced, but has not yet reached the sophistications human hoped it would reach. It can be trusted with navigating ‘Starlight’ when the crew is unconscious and dealing with simple problems, but its ability to think its way out of more complex problems is questionable at best.


Fighters

The 'Starlight' is able to carry in its hangar deck ten 'DS Fighters'. 29 feet (8.7m) in length, they are equipped with two forward-firing turrets firing 30mm, armor piercing projectiles. Their small number means that they are used mainly for reconnaissance operations, and only secondarily in dogfights, with the 'Starlight' itself being used primarily in space combat. However, during space battle, the fighters can take on a supporting role if need be.

It should be noted that while the RP is open to everyone, in order to get accepted you must provide a decent app: good formatting and a biography at least three paragraphs long are requirements. Those who wish to apply for high-ranking officers will need to put an extra effort in their applications.

Storyline So Far:


The starship 'Starlight' approaches the outer reaches of the Solar System and heads towards the mysterious Wormhole Gate...

The Starlight has successfully travelled through the Wormhole Gate and has reached a solar system with a yellow dwarf start and single planet; a rock planet with expansive frozen oceans.

Biography: Luke Bell was born on May 4th, 2056 to a mother who was a prominent physician, and a father who served as a Naval officer. His parents ensured he received an excellent education, and Luke excelled in his studies, graduating near the top of his class in both high school and college before following in his mother's footsteps and attending medical school. Not to ignore his father's legacy, while in medical school he signed on with the Navy and went on to do a GMO tour in Flight Medicine before completing a military residency in General Surgery.

Near the end of his residency, he first learned of the discovery of the Wormhole Gate and became extremely fascinated at the prospect of exploring space far beyond what previous would've been thought imaginable in his lifetime. After the gate was first activated and sealed, Luke put in a request to transfer to one of the teams researching the anomaly, and when Operation Starlight was in its early planning phases, he was assigned to help develop the future expedition's medical protocols.

After two years of hard work, Luke gladly volunteered to serve as the Chief Medical Officer aboard the Starlight once the operation was finally given the go-ahead, and with his in-depth knowledge of the operation's medical protocols was quickly selected for the position. Now he waits aboard the Starlight helping with the final preparations before the ship sets off on a voyage unlike any mankind has ever faced...
Psychological Profile: Dr. Bell is a dedicated and honorable physician who cares greatly about the men and women aboard the Starlight and patients under his care. He is an introvert, and though he often enjoys spending time with others, he can equally enjoy a quiet night alone pouring through the latest medical journals in his quarters.

Appearance: Dark brown skin, 5' 4" in height, slightly overweight, short manageable hair. Always dressed in a shiny white lab coat made of a material that reflects all contamination. Has a cybernetic eye that's visible.

Origins: Born in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, moved to the Luna Colony with her family when she was 16.

Role: Merilla is a scientist, and her field is in xenobiology, or the study of aliens. Her field is just theoretical now, but soon it won't be...

Biography: Merilla Katherine Johnson was born on September 13, 2054. Her parents were Marie Dieudonné-Johnson, an African-French lawyer and science enthusiast, and Story Johnson, an African-American law professor. Merilla had three sisters, two older sisters and one younger sister. Both of her parents, despite having children late in life, are still alive, but one of Merilla's older sisters died in the Third World War.

The Third World War was so bad that the terrible destruction reached inland areas of one of the most powerful countries in the world. Kansas City, Missouri was the subject of several drone attacks and bombing strikes. Merilla had the unfortunate time of trying to grow up during this terrible war. After the war, America disappeared, only to be replaced by a special UN protectorate due to the US's... unusual history. Merilla's parents hated that, but when Merilla became a teenager and grew a political consciousness, she thought it was just dandy.

The year Merilla turned 16 was momentous. First her family moved to Luna Colony. Merilla loved it on the moon. Next, Merilla discovered her gender identity: demigirl. Not completely female, but not agender either. Her father was supportive, but her mother could simply not wrap her head around that concept. Finally, Merilla got her first Mod, a cybernetic eye to help with her severe astigmatism. It was one of the first Mods ever, and thus looks quite outdated now, as well as taking a lot of time and hassle. Merilla can't replace it due to a quirk in the insertion process.

In college, Merilla studied law for a while, but then switched her major to xenobiology after seeing a movie with an evil lawyer. Merilla faced discrimination (still!) in the sciences, mainly due to the fact that very few people could figure out her gender. Merilla graduated with a PhD, but doesn't go by Doctor or add PhD to her name for personal reasons. Merilla Johnson wrote several speculative papers, one non-fiction book, and many children's sci fi novels about her chosen field of study. By 2090, Merilla had become one of the top scientists in Luna Colony in the field of xenobiology, a feat made more impressive by her young age, 35. When she was informed about Operation Starlight, she volunteered to go at once.

Psychological Profile: Merilla is a complicated character, at once excited over the possibilities of science and worrying about whether her workplace is clean. Surprisingly, Merilla is an ambivert, working well both with people and alone. Merilla is idealistic about her goals and practical about the means to obtain them. "Shoot for the moon, because if you miss you will be among the stars" is her favorite quote. Merilla is a bit narcissistic, oftentimes extolling her own abilities, but most of the time she lives up to her bragging. This all goes out the window when she has a war flashback. Then Merilla has to sit on the floor crying until the offending whatever that has caused her flashback is taken out of the room.

Other Information: Likes science fiction movies and TV shows. Her idol is Lt. Uhura.

Created a Captain character, since it is an important role and we lack one. If someone was already preparing a Captain app, worry not. I have a backup plan for the guy to assume another (still high ranking) position. :)

Without giving spoilers away, I can also divulge that circumstances in our first storyline will allow for other officers to play a far greater role in decision-making than it would initially appear. :)

Wartime experience – His service in World War Three and in the UN anti-insurgency operations in Afghanistan and Libya means he has valuable experience on how to lead a military operations.

Intelligent

Respected Officer – He is respected for his wartime service.

Weaknesses:

Slow to action – Takeshi always thinks before doing something. While this usually is considered a strength, in the field of battle it can a terrible weakness as the inability to take risks and try new tactics can lead to defeats.

Disliked by crew – While Takeshi has the respect of his crew, he is disliked because of the strict military discipline he imposes.

Leg injury – An injury from World War Three means Takeshi is slightly limping on his left leg, which slows him down in combat.

Biography:

Takeshi Shinaro was born to a military family in Tokyo, in 2036. His father was a General (and Chief of Staff for four years) while his mother was the daughter of another prominent General. He was a diligent student at school, especially when it came to mathematics and history. While at high school, he and a couple of friends joined a far-right activist group called ‘Defenders of the Emperor’s Dignity’, calling for an end to democracy and return to imperial rule. The group would regularly engage in street fights with left-wing students and publish articles attacking democracy. While after graduation Takeshi would become more discreet in his political leanings, he remains to this day a committed nationalist and monarchist.

Takeshi became a student at the National Defense Academy of Japan, proceeding to get a Master’s and then a Doctoral degree on Military and Strategic Studies, graduating in 2060. After graduation, he joined the Air Self-Defense Force. In that position, he saw action during the Third World War in the Pacific Theater (2061 – 2063). He became an ace, shooting down 85 aircraft. During Operation Hellstorm, the air field in which he was stationed came under a surprise attack. Takeshi was injured on his left leg, causing him to limp ever since.

With the war’s end, he had been promoted to Captain and, six years later, to Colonel. As Colonel, for three years he was stationed in Afghanistan as part of the United Nation Command fighting against Jihadist insurgents. In 2072, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the United Nations Command in Libya, with the aim of stabilizing the country and defeating the Jihadist insurgency. Takeshi directed air strikes against terrorist targets which were widely praised as highly efficient but also criticized for high civilian casualty rates. His tenure in Libya lasted for seven years.

In 2079, he returned back to Japan with the rank of Major General. With the UN seeking to create a professionalized Space Command, he was asked to join due to his long wartime experience. After two years of specialized training to adapt to the realities – and peculiarities – of space, in 2081 he joined officially the Space Command with the rank of Vice Admiral. He saw active duty in 2082, putting down a violent strike in one of the mining outposts in the Asteroid Field.

In 2083, he was tasked with heading the San Francisco Space Military Academy. He remained at that role until 2088, when he was chosen to become a member of the United Nations Military Security Council, an advisory body staffed by high-ranking military officers responsible for advising the UN General Secretary on military issues.

With the discovery of the Wormhole Ring, he was tasked with leading Operation Starlight, acting as Captain (despite his rank as Vice-Admiral). The reasoning behind this decision was that such an important undertaking had to be led by someone experienced. There were rumors however that Takeshi’s political enemies pushed for this assignment, to get him out of the way.

Psychological Profile:

Cold and calculating, he cares purely about getting results. A strict disciplinarian, he demands the strictest of obedience by everyone. A nationalist and conservative, he holds prejudices against non-Japanese and has a traditionalist view on gender. Nevertheless, being a strict professional, he does not expresses his private views to the crew.

Is there any available hangar space for some kind of ship-launched fighter on the Starlight? Or are all mobile military assets ground-based? Just asking because I kinda want to play as a pilot. If not, I'll still apply as a ground troop.

I've added a new section in first post as a clarification with regards to fighters. Yes, there are ten fighters (ship isn't big enough to carry tens of fighters), but they are used primarily for reconnaissance operations and only secondarily in combat, mainly in a supporting role though in certain cases they could engage in dogfights.

Feel free to app as a pilot or a ground troopers. :)

I've added a new section in first post as a clarification with regards to fighters. Yes, there are ten fighters (ship isn't big enough to carry tens of fighters), but they are used primarily for reconnaissance operations and only secondarily in combat, mainly in a supporting role though in certain cases they could engage in dogfights.

Feel free to app as a pilot or a ground troopers. :)

Biography: born in the city of sombor in Serbia, Tihomir was born to a modest family, with a a father being a entrepreneur in aerodynamics, and her mother being a Architect, he was 2 when the Third world war erupted.
After the fighting reached Sombor,a clueless Tihomir and his family fled the City for the Croatian border, trudging through the Serbian countryside and avoiding urban centers to ensure that they wouldnt be caught in the crossfire. The family eventually reached the city of Batina, but after discovering a city in ruins, the family quietly moved west, dragging a confused Tihomir, along with them. Every week, His father would de0rat from the Temporary lean-to the family has built for the night, and Went off to the nearest town to gather whatever food and supplies he can, and return home.
Several weeks later, He and his family, along with a stolen car arrived the port city of Zadar, And began their Journey through the crossfire, And that journey ended with a mother who was pulverized by a Sniper's round through the cranium. And a stolen motor boat, with (hopefully) enough fuel to reach the itallian coastline, where they will seek respite from war.

SCREECH! the boat crashed agianst the rocks on the beach, and father was forced to travel to the beach, 3 year old child in hand, and after he reached the beach, he put down the child, walked to the shoreline, and saw yellow flashes in the distance.
The war has spread to Italy.

In the years after the war, Tihomir's father and him relocated to the United states, where father restarted his aerodynamics business in order to make a decent living in the now UN-controlled states, Although more of a nationalist than the average politically correct UN citizen, his father will grow to tolerate the New goverment, but has been thought to value individualism and Freedom of expression, and the same goes to Tihomir.
After graduating from high school, Thimoir developed a more american accent and decided to enlist in the millitary academy as a trpoper, and Graduating as a part of the class of 2091 with honors in marksmanship and CQB tactics,
Tihomir Volunteered for project starlight for the role of master of arms, as well as a part of away teams, after all, all he has to do is to babaysut a couple of scientists in their lab coats, that's easy!

Tex received a large monetary deposit as an advance payment before he was to board the Starlight. He was also given permission to make whatever modifications he wanted to his fighter craft so long as he purchased the mods with his own funds. The mods are listed here:
- A new paint job in the colors of his former squadron, the recently reestablished VF-103 Jolly Rogers. In keeping with the traditions of each previous Jolly Rogers squadron, the base color is gunmetal grey, the secondary color is black, the tertiary/decorative color is gold-yellow, and the Jolly Roger skull decal is present on the tail.
- Gimballed gun mounts for the twin 30mm cannons in the nose, meaning they can move and aim within a certain field-of-view outside of what the ship is directly facing. They are guided via Tex's helmet-mounted display (HMD) system, which moves the guns in accordance with the movements of his head so long as a target has been locked on to. This allows for off-boresight shots to be taken, greatly increasing the variety of maneuvers that can be done while firing.
- Missile hardpoints on the underside of the wings, two per wing, to be exact. These can be used to mount a variety of ship-to-ship, ship-to-ground, or electronic warfare ordnance in accordance with the mission. Each hardpoint can carry two short-range ship-to-ship guided missiles, one long-range ship-to-ship guided missile, one short-to-medium range guided anti-radiation or EMP missile, or one high-explosive ship-to-ground guided bomb (can also be used against large spacecraft). For typical recon duties, Tex will fly equipped with four short-range guided missiles and two long-range guided missiles.
- Improved RCS package utilizing plasma jets fueled by microwave-ionized gas rather than normal gas ejecta, providing more thrust, which equates to a faster and tighter maneuvering pattern. In-atmosphere, these can use the air present around the ship as fuel for the ionization process, thereby granting Tex more leeway in his fuel usage for in-atmosphere combat.
- Thrust Vectoring-Capable engines, meaning that the engines can be canted in any backward direction to provide more thrust at a certain angle. This enables Tex's ship to have a very tight linear turn radius, especially when complemented by the RCS package, and when in space they expedite or refine maneuvers made possible by the six degrees of freedom. The emphasis on maneuverability and multi-directional firepower in Tex's ship allows it to fly circles around enemy craft whilst simultaneously firing at it, enabling quicker kills and confusing enemy pilots.

Biography: Tex Wilson was born on May 8th, 2055 in the Sheppard Air and Space Force Base (previously only Air Force) hospital, near Wichita Falls, Texas. His mother and father were both in the US military. His mother was a medical officer stationed at Sheppard, and his father was a fighter pilot operating from said base. For many generations prior, his family has been military. His ancestors have fought in nearly every American war from the Revolution to the Civil War to World War 2 and beyond, the military was an unquestioned and honored tradition in the Wilson family. From the very earliest age where he understood his surroundings, he attended the local United States Military School to learn discipline, cooperation, and leadership alongside basic studies like math and history.

When World War III broke out, Tex was caught right in the middle of it. He was under constant stress and fear, as joint Russian-Chinese bomber flyovers left his surroundings decimated. Nonetheless, he pressed on with his goal of becoming a fighter pilot just like his father. However, during the course of the war, his father was shot down and killed after his squadron was scrambled to intercept a Russian deep-strike battle group. With his idol and role model dead, Tex found himself enraged and unsure of what to do next. At the war's close, his widowed mother and him found themselves surrounded by the rubble that Sheppard ASFB had been reduced to, homeless and without a strong man in the house. Being so young at the time, Tex was scarred forever by the third world war.

Later in life, Tex and his mother had a somewhat stable life living near the repurposed Cape Canaveral launch center, which had been converted from a civilian installation to a military base. In 2073, Tex was shipped off to the Lackland Naval Space Force Academy in his home state of Texas, where he was to train to become a fighter pilot. His superb leadership and top scores in the simulators made him highly favored among Academy Alumni, and he graduated as an exo-atmospheric combat-qualified pilot in 2077. Due to his incredible reputation and high scores, different squadrons practically slit each other's throats over who would get him. However, ultimately it was up to the UN Naval Space branch of the United Nations Space Command where he would go, and that would be the newly reestablished VF-103 Jolly Rogers fighter squadron. The famed squadron previously flew the F-14 and the F/A-18 fighter jets, and were known for their distinctive paint scheme and skull decals on their tails. The craft Tex would be flying into battle was a new forward-swept-wing design intended for missions taking place beyond Earth's atmosphere.

Even though WW3 was over, the new UN still had enemies to take care of, albeit on a much smaller scale. Among these were Russian and Chinese nationalist remnant factions, still pissed off about the forced subjugation of their nations under a unified world order. While Tex wasn't fond of the UN either, he relished the opportunity to get revenge on those that had caused so much trauma in his life. Throughout his career, Tex proved to be an excellent pilot, scoring 23 ship-to-ship kills against the nationalist remnants, and he quickly ascended the ranks until he was in command of the Jolly Rogers squadron. With the discovery of the wormhole at the edge of the Solar System, Tex was approached by the United Nations Space Command with a good-paying offer to join the crew of the Starlight on their mission. Without many questions, he agreed, anticipating excitement and adventure with the possibility of encountering a new, more alien enemy to do battle with.

Application below; not the kind of character I usually play, but for some reason I can't let go of this idea.



Name: Rikissa Strand

Gender: Female

Age: 23~24 years (born 01 May 2067)

Appearance: Standing at just over 1.7 metres in height and a little over 50kg in mass, Rikissa presents a small, androgynous figure almost totally at odds with her reputation and personality. Crimson, neck-length hair frames a light-skinned face characterised by emerald-green eyes and a discoloured reddish scar stretching diagonally across her right cheek from her nose down to her jaw. In the Starlight Rikissa can usually be found in her yellow-on-red recreational uniform.

Origins: Rikissa is a Scottish national, born Aberdeen and raised in Edinburgh.

Role: Senior Ensign, Scout-Ranger specialty

Strengths: Rikissa possesses a cybernetics-augmented cardiovascular and respiratory systems and a reinforced cranium, which makes her less vulnerable to damage against critical organs and more able to shrug off exhaustion. She's experienced in navigating in the darkness through urban terrain. She also has some limited experience with knife fighting alongside her regular military training.

Weaknesses: Rikissa has always had and still does have difficulties adapting herself to military discipline. She also has difficulties empathising with people and often has social difficulties.

Equipment: These days Rikissa fights with her standard UN-issued power armour, rifle, and ranger's kit, although she still keeps her long dagger from her vigilante days around.

Biography: Although Rikissa was born after the end of the Third World War, her childhood was marred by its ghosts. Rikissa was born to Anders Strand, a migrant from Bergen, Norway, and Claire Scott, who fought as a partisan in the war. The first of three children, she grew up in the impoverished and poorly-serviced slums of Edinburgh populated mostly by wartime refugees from England or the Continent, raised solely by her mother after the divorce of her parents in 2073. Living between petty criminals on the streets and bullies at school, she quickly learned to take care of herself from a very early age. Records from her education show the image of a shy and conscientious young woman increasingly turning brutish and impulsive over the years, and eventually she was expelled from school in 2082 after a violent retaliation against her bullies.

Between her need to support herself and her younger siblings in an increasingly dysfunctional family environment and her passionate hatred of what she saw as parasites on society, she turned to vigilantism to make a living, clearing out a space for herself and her tentative friends by ambushing criminal gangs in the city's slums. While in her early days she was seen more as a neutral element, with Police Scotland badly overextended and unwilling to pick a fight with yet another enemy, as the 2080s passed and Reconstruction proceeded in earnest, the city's living standards rose sharply, its criminal elements shrank quickly, and Police Scotland's patience for people outside the law dried up. By the late 2080s, her circle of vigilantes had collapsed, and the police began making a serious effort to clear up the slums.

A badly botched barfight in June 2088 finally saw her arrested again and the authorities willing to press serious charges. Given a choice between a years-long prison sentence and military service, she entered the United Nations Peacekeepers on a court-mandated 6-year term of service, being deployed on a counterinsurgency operation in the Balkans that saw her establish a reputation among her squad as an effective, if also troublesome and irritating, recon scout. While she is barely qualified for a scientific mission such as the Starlight, she volunteered for the mission with the hopes that the frontier in space will give her greater freedom. Her commanding officer signed a letter of recommendation, mostly just hoping to get this trouble case out of his unit.

So she stands, now, aboard a vessel destined to frontiers unknown.

Psychological Profile: Rikissa considers herself honest, decisive, selfless, and bold. However, the people around her generally consider her to be hot-tempered, callous bordering on sadistic, impatient, and single-minded.

Other Information: Rikissa respects diligence, ambition, and individuality. She tends to be more open towards go-getters, as long as they don't challenge her and hers, while despising those who let others do their work and looking down on people with little drive.

I have an idea for a character that might be interesting but I'm not sure if it would fit with the story. An engineer picked for the mission who is secretly working for one of the major corporations or other factions who see the wormhole and potential contact with alien species as a threat to either profits or humanity. So their mission would be to work to sabotage the mission so that it results in a failure and push back exploration.
